5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas movie
I have worn out my VHS tape I copied off tv many years ago of this Christmas classic.I will be thrilled if they ever release it and the other Addie Mills specials on DVD. I always looked forward to seeing them when they aired. It was nice seeing the review from Lisa Lucas (Addie Mills).Nice to hear she enjoyed making these movies and knows how much pleasure she brought us all. She and Mildred Natwick and Jason Robards were so special together.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christmas Stories Ever
It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my all time favorite T.V. special!
I loved watching this T.V. special when I was a young--er.I was about the same age too as Addie, and I looked forward to watching it year after year after year, but then they stopped running the special and I was so disappointed.I just took a chance to see if I could find it for sale on the Internet and low and behold, I found it so I just placed my order! You have no idea how thrilled I was to see that it was available to buy.I can't wait to see it again, considering it's been about 30 years or more since I've seen it.I couldn't remember the name of the special but all I knew for certain was Jason Robards played Addie's dad, and Mildred Natwick played her grandmother. It was one of the best things I've ever seen on T.V., and now I can pass this on to my children.

Editorial Review

This classic 1964 television special featuring Rudolph and his misfit buddies set the standard for stop-motion animation for an entire generation before Tim Burton darkly reinvented it in the early 1990s. Burl Ives narrates as Sam the Snowman, telling and singing the story of a rejected reindeer who overcomes prejudice and saves Christmas one particularly blustery year. Along the way, he meets an abundance of unforgettable characters: his dentallyobsessed elf pal Hermey; the affable miner Yukon Cornelius and his motley crew of puppies; the scary/adorable Abominable Snow Monster; a legion of abandoned, but still chatty, toys; and a rather grouchy Santa. In addition to the title song that inspired it, this 53-minute tape is crammed with catchy tunes such as"Silver and Gold" and "Holly Jolly Christmas." Those who grew up looking forward to watching Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious, Wondrous, theGreatest Rudolph of Them All!
Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer is indeed the most marvelous Christmas film ever! It is one of many superb animated films written by a great man named Romeo Muller. Rudolph is doubtless his best-loved work. I remember watching the film as a child, delighted and enraptured by the story that it told. Do you remember? Sam the Snowman as narrator (voiced and sung in the performance of a lifetime by Burl Ives); Rudolph the misfit and rejected reindeer; Rudolph's friend, Hermy the Elf, also a misfit because he doesn't like to make toys but wants to be a dentist; Yukon Cornelius, the prospector who befriends them both; the Abominable Snowmonster of the North (whom Yukon, in prospector slang, invariably calls a "bumble"); the Island of Misfit Toys, and its winged lion ruler, King Moonracer; and many other characters and story threads. The presentation, interweaving, and resolution of all of these elements is positively Shakespearean in deftness, wit, poetic beauty and brevity of expression, depth, pathos, joy, moral instruction, and the sense that all ends as indeed it should. Grounded in a deep and sparkling love of all creation, these qualities characterize all of Romeo Muller's films. If you will see it devotedly--indeed, if you will see any and all of Romeo's films--you will become a finer, more compassionate, and a more truly loving human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immortal Christmas Classic FeaturingThe Most Famous Reindeer Of All
A "true treasure", is really the only way to describe this legendary Christmas television special that originally premiered in 1964. Arthur Rankin's totally captivating stop motion animation was a bench mark for everything that has come since and even with all of our modern computer technology nothing could come close to the beauty of the creations here. The story of that most famous of reindeers, the one and only Rudolph who's initial drawback of having a shiny nose eventually becomes his chief asset, is beautifully told in a music filled special narrated by Burl Ives in a perfect piece of casting as Sam the snowman. This special has quite rightly become a Christmas instituation every year since its initial release and appeals equally to both children and adults with its timeless message of tolerance and acceptance of all who are different. It has happily now been given a deserving release onto DVD back in its original form complete with deleted songs and a superb restoration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than 34th Street
I love this movie. Every year there is a 24-hour marathon on the television of this film and my family and I watch it at least ten times. It truly never gets old with us as the characters are authentic and full of good humor. It is hysterically funny at times, especially when the father receives the leg lamp in the mail and pronounces the word stamped on the box "fragile" as "fra-gee-lay; huh, must be Italian". Ralphie and his family make my family's holiday a lot brighter and we all look forward to watching this movie every year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Darren McGavin's (and Pete Billingsley's!) best. A fine film that recaptures that period well!
"You'll shoot your eye out." How many
5-0 out of 5 stars I need to stop laughing, it hurts too much!
This movie is downright hilarious the whole way through. In this story, Ralphie, who is 9 years old, must convince his parents and teacher what the perfect gift for christmas is. At first, he hesitates, and when he asks, its always the same answer: "Oh, no. you'll shoot you're eye out!" Raphie stops at nothing to get what he wants. He would not even listen to the teacher when she gave him a C on his "what i want for christmas" paper and told him it's a bad idea. He didnt even listen to who he thought was the real santa.

I thought it was a very entertaining movie. It had an interesting story and some very good special effects. Some of the action sequences at the end were done well as well.I would recommend this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SISTERS JELOUSY TURNS TO WITCHCRAFT!
This movie is pretty interesting, the story isn't transparent and the characters are well rounded. Basically the story is about this crazy old bitch named Abigale Gregory (love the name!) who is envious of her child star sister Sally Shine (like Shirley Temple) played by Cory Matthews sister in the later episodes of "Boy Meets World". Sally and a couple of other stars are lost in an elevator crash many years ago. Loser Buzzy who is a writer for trashy magazines is contacted by Abigale who tells Buzzy the whole story. Buzzy gets interesed and his niece (Dunst) snoop around. Anyway if you want to see a crazy old witch do an evil laugh, perform voodoo, have a sick box of Sally Shine dolls with no heads in her room then this movie is for you. I laughed so hard at it!!! It was a good time, even at the end there is a cool song called "My Dreams" sung by one of the star ghost. This movie is filled with lots of laughs and great fun for the light hearted.

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
This movie was pretty good. I liked the witch. She is my favorite character because she is a pretty bad villain and I like villains. The parts of the movie that I liked best were the parts with the Wizard and the Munchkins.Once Dorothy and the scarecrow, lion and tin man reach Oz, it gets very interesting. You finally get to see the place they've been following the yellow brick road for. It's cool.I am six.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Version of the Wizard of Oz yet
Known to all, this is the story of Dorothy Gale and herjourney to the magical land of Oz. She meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a cowardly lion who desperately needs courage. The most popular film of all time , seen by over a billion people. It's timelessness is proof enough of its value . Certainly flawed when scrutinized and written about for 56 years, but still most beloved. In 1998 rereleased on the big screen: magic. And admittedly the most important film of my life: As a child I was obsessed with the film and only a little less now.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Never Gets Old
"The Wizard Of Oz" is a film truly worthy of the title timeless. No matter how many times, you can't help but be amazed by the sense of wonder and inspiration this film creates. Even after 67 years, it's still one of the most impressive and uplifiting moments in cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Sound My Barbaric YAWP Over The Roofs Of The World
I used to love this Peter Weir movie and now sadly it seems far too idealistic and implausible to me. I wish it didn't. I've probably seen Dead Poet's Society a dozen times and while I still think it is a beautiful motion picture in its message about how the power of the written word as a tool for free thought is a life-changing force, I can't seem to find it in me to think it's possible that a teacher could have reached teenaged boys in quite that way. Well, I guess that's why we have films, so we can see things we wouldn't in life. All this said, I do believe Dead Poet's Society is a classic. If you haven't seen it, you probably should. It is an uplifting, often gloriously beautiful, always embraceable film with a solid cast that includes Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and living theatrical legend, Norman Lloyd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raises interesting questions
This film is superlative by every standard.Robin Williams does a brilliant job in his role as a semi-bohemian poetry teacher with a passion for challenging orthodoxy. As mentioned so many times by past reviewers, Ethan Hawke's performance is similarly powerful, as are those of the other boys.Sets and cinematography deserve praise too, for capturing the "feel" not only of the school but the era in which it is set.The script is superb as well.It captures all the angst felt by the young men as they begin to question the world they have been thrust into and their places in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Captain, my captain..."
The influx of teacher/student movies will never cease. That said there are those that succeed on every level like `A Beautiful Mind' or `Mr. Holland's Opus' and even `Dangerous Minds' to an extent. Then you have those that fail miserably. But this film is neither. It failed to move me in ways never done before, but it also carried enough weight to make the experience worth the time spent viewing it.`Dead Poets Society' is a film about being who you are despite what the rest of society wants you to be.It's about expressing yourself in the face of adversity. The idea of a bunch of male college students secretly sneaking off campus to read poetry is pretty lame and far fetched, but it's the ferocity in their eyes while in the class room that makes up for the plot.

1-0 out of 5 stars For shame
These books are great and the movie made a joke out of them. Visser 3 looks like a blue hair ball and theirs NO ACTION!

1-0 out of 5 stars A shame to the name Animorph
This like its predeseres is an insult to the magical books. The books were great this wasn't. Gone is the intense action and fights the book described. Now we get garbage sneaking around. The andalites are very fake and are never showen all at once. No taxxons at all. The hork bajar just stand there. Gone is the witty smart acting of the books replaced by total garbage. Read the books and stay away from this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Legacy Survives
This is the best of the 4 movies! The 3 episodes are The Capture Parts 1 and 2 and Not My Problem. In the Capture Part 1 The animorphs discover the yeerks are in charge of a health clinic where the governor will receive a treatment and if the Yeerk's plan is successful he will be a human-controller.He is also running for president! Jake falls into the Yeerk Pool and becomes a controller. In the Capture Part 2 Ax figures out that Jake is a human-controller.Jake keeps reassuring the animorphs that he is not and they figure they must lock him up for 3 days to be sure.On the thrid day Jake waits for Rachel (who is guarding him) to fall asleep. He then morphs to dog and escapes the barn undetected (or so he thinks). He leads the animorphs to a new entrance to the Yeerk Pool.He finds out that his friends knew he escaped since Rachel had only been pretending. The Yeerk dies and the Animorphs meet at the mall where Jake calls tom disgusing his voice telling him not to give up.In Not My Problem Jake has had enough between fighting Yeerks and keeping up with his schoolwork. He wishes he never met the Elfangor and the Ellimist grants his wish. Then durind their new lives Tobias (who is the only animorph) tells Rachel about the Yeerk threat. At 1st she thinks he's nuts.Later they all go to a Sharing meeting where Tobias is caught sneeking around. It is then revealed that Jake is a controller. After school Tobias calls Rachel and asks her to meet him at the Spider Club (the place where the Sharing meeting was held).Jake follows her and a lion saves her from Jake. The lion turns out to be Tobias. He and Rachel tie Jake up and then Jake askshim about the "andalite" that attacks him.It turns out that Rachel has been a controller since the previous night and then she tells Jake everything.Tobias tries to escape but Tom, Cassie, Marco, and 2 punks cut off his escape. He is captured and Visser 3 comes in and promotes Jake to Visser 10.Jake tries to infest Tobias but fails when the real Jake fights back.Jake is then in his room back in a world where Tobias is still a hawk, the animorphs exist and none of them are controllers. Was it a dream or real? All in all this is a great movie. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I heart Ben and Me
Although I found Amos to be a little anthropomorphic, he functions as an excellent literary device to add comedy to an otherwise perhaps boring autobiography. While Amos probably did not write the first sentence of the Declaration, it seems quite likely, judging from recent historical findings, that he did indeed invent bifocals. Anyway this movie is da bomb!!! LOL!!11!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The movie was good.
Boy, it's astounding how many "11-year old viewers" on Amazon are so surprisingly literate and exacting in writing reviews. You'd think that maybe it was just an adult trying to pass themselves off for whatever reason, but no, certainly, it couldn't be that. Besides, we all know how much concern the average pre-teen has for accurate portrayals of historical figures in film.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment----
Though I was optimistic when I started the movie, I was soon appalled to see the way it portrayed Ben Franklin.Ben Franklin was a famous inventor, not a befuddled old man who can barely remember his own name! His 'Poor Richard's Almanac' was very popular, but this movie made it sound boring and unnecessary.Right from the point that Amos arrived in Ben Franklin's shop, he was helping him.Ben Franklin invented bifocals and the Franklin stove on his own, but here Amos is said to have come up with both! And in the incident where Ben Franklin flies the kite in the storm, the real scientific purpose is never even mentioned.Instead, Amos is again in the spotlight, put out at being a part of one of Ben's "silly experiments."The story suggests that Benjamin Franklin can't manage anything without the help of the mouse. And towards the end of the story, when AMOS is shown to have been the writer of the beginning of the Delcaration of Independence I couldn't believe my eyes!I couldn't and still can't believe how much they omitted or changed the real history, to show Amos as the hero in every situation.Educational and Historical? It might make a good animated film for kids just to watch for pleasure, but if you're looking for an educational video this is the wrong place to go! ... Two kids find themselves magically transported to the wonderful land of Sillyville, where they meet a pixie-ish character named Sillywhim. She asks their help in bringing together the various groups of this imaginative world. (Each group wears a different color and has a bias against any color that's different.) The kids' encounters with the Sillyvillians result in almost nonstop nonsense songs that will delight young viewers: there's everything from "I'm a Nut" to "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt." The message--that because someone looks different it doesn't mean he or she is bad--is a positive one. And the musical shenanigans will hold the attention of the 1- to 5-year-old audience for repeated viewings. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great movie
i had this movie as a kid. the first time i saw it i was 5 years old, and i was home sick from school with the stomach flu. i was bored and found this tape on the shelf. i watched it. i loved it up until the wump-that thing scared me half to death. well, not really, but i was very scared of that thing. i did not watch this movie again until i was 8. by then i had gotten over my fear of the wump. but i was OBSESSED with the jingleheimers. i used to run around pretending i was a jingleheimer, and insisting that my friends and i played leapfrog at recess. it was cute...until one of my friends got hurt. then this tape got sold in a yard sale when i was 12. i was in tears. now i'm 14 and i'm seeing a whole new meaning in this movie. teenagers can benefit from this movie as well, because the message in it is important in saying that prejudice and racism is wrong. i recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys silliness mixed with an important message.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Bunny Picnic
This wonderful Henson movie came out when my children were young; they are both grown and married. My oldest now has a newborn son and I would LOVE to be able to find this on DVD and/or VHS for him.Be-Bop-A-Loo-Wop-Bop was their favorite character... and the DAWWWG was just like our family dog, so he is forever our friend! If you have not seen this, you are missing the magic in your heart! It is simply the best.

When a special effect turns Tosha's bedroom closet into a stairwellof a pirate ship, the viewer knows this will be a different Barneyexperience. Tosha and Min and their lumbering dinosaur guide climb aboard tojoin Baby Bop, B.J., and the boys on a journey to the titular island. After ahearty land-ho, Barney and the kids explore the island, stopping along theway to turn tree branches, starfish, and clams into percussion instruments andbreak out in song. They stumble onto a thatched cottage, and its owner,Professor Tinkerputt, invites them in to look, but not touch, the beautifultoys he makes for himself. The gang turns the professor's life around byteaching him about sharing and he decides to join them on their journey homein order to give his toys to children. On the scale of adult irritation, thisfanciful Barney installment ranks surprisingly low. Older children who have outgrown some of the more lesson-oriented tapes in the series may even find themselves watching this one with their younger siblings. (Ages 1-8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
My toddler granddaughter loves this Barney video just like she does all the other Barney videos, but I even enjoy this one. If I were a little kid, this is the one that I would watch over and over....in fact, I have...but with my granddaughter, of course. The make-believe part where the kids and Barney journey by ship to Imagination Island is perfect! It reminds me of the old Storybook Land that used to sit where DFW airport is now. This is a very charming video that kids up to the age of 10 are sure to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars theme
It was truly amazing. It has all my favorite Barney Songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Barney video/movie
I just bought this on sale at Walmart on VHS for about $6, and the box said it was 29 minutes, but it ended up to be the full-length 50 minute show. It's not the same studio background as the TV show, so it has that movie feel, and it's PERFECT for my 3 1/2 year old daughter (and my 1 1/2 year old son even sits still to watch it!).And, though I normally don't enjoy Barney shows, I must admit I find this little movie so sweet! It starts off in a cozy girly bedroom with two friends for a sleepover, then Barney shows up and they venture off onto a pirate ship to meet the guys and other dinosaur characters. They land on an island, meet this great character played by a middle aged man who ends up sharing his toy inventions after the gang teaches him how great sharing can be.The man sings a great catchy song and is very entertaining. Then the gang travels home and the girls end up back in the cozy bedroom.Catchy songs are just minutes in between the whole video. This is great for girls and boys, such a sweet fun feel to the whole show.I have become a fan of Barney since my kids love him, and the shows teach such great examples, and I have to say of all we have, this is the best show! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars How Green Is Your Grinch?
I was quite disheartened when I purchased the previous DVD release of How the Grinch Stole Christmas to find a yellowish grinch in the video transfer. It is most certainly my intention to purchase the upcoming release in the hopes that this problem has been corrected but what exactly is the story on the contents of this release. Are we supposed to believe that this is a 26 minute running time release with no other contents on 2 DVDs? What exactly are we getting here and what is the growing problem among manufacturers who remain tight-lipped about product content prior to the release date?
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Grinch movie you want to see
This is the original animated film. Awesome. Loved every minute of it as if I were 8 again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Family Classic
I recently purchased the DVD of Dr. Seuss - How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is the third generation in my family to derive such enjoyment from the ORIGINAL Dr. Seuss classic. I watched and loved it as a child, my two daughters watched and felt the same way growing up. And now my Grandson, who loves most, but not all Dr. Seuss stories, LOVES watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It is not only a family classic, but a timeless classic. And it's truly enhanced that it teaches a very valuable lesson as to the true meaning of Christmas, as well. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The American Ballet Theater version of the Tchaikovsky classic, a 1977 studio rendition directed by Tony Charmoli, has become a holiday perennial on PBS stations and home video. It's a favorite of parents who want to give their kids the gift of culture--and with good reason. There's a loose fairy tale plot to keep dance neophytes interested, and Boris Aronson's eye-candy production design is a series of lavish dioramas. From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz), who prances on his stick-thin limbs like a Dickens illustration come to life. The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. An opening slow-motion montage diagrams his fabled smoothness of execution, elegant airborne trajectories that have a feather-light perfection.Music lovers who know only "The Nutcracker Suite" will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn. 4-0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Baryshnikov, Kirkland, Charmoli
Wonderful as all Baryshnikov performances are.The popular Christmas ballet at its best!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Adaptation
I was impressed that they actually performed this to be video taped and took advantage of the video options like zoom.No one jumps like Baryshnikov. It's magical.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nutcracker has a clear sexual theme to it
Rss22 is apparently disturbed by the sexual theme present in this version of the Nutcracker. However, it is essential to the ballet. In short, the Nutcracker is about a young girl becoming a woman and the sexual conflicts involved. Her dream is clearly sexual. She fights off the mice who represent her "dirty" sexual impulses and lascivious temptations including that of being "conquered" by the Mouse King. Finally, with the arrival of the Nutcracker Prince and his help, she is able to sublimate these impulses into a mature love for a protector who marries her (the Nutcracker prince) and who makes an "honest woman" of her. Proper versions of the ballet always have the Christmas tree swell and rise to gargantuan size, like the big phallis it represents. Ballets that fail to do this indicate a lack of understanding of what the ballet is all about. However, children can enjoy it without necessarily having the sexual meanings made explicit to them. Just don't point them out. Simple. ... Read more
