5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for children to music appreciation!
My 5 yo loves classical music, and I found these videos at my library. He loves them! I appreciate how Marsalis uses classical music to help us understand jazz, which I like but never really "appreciated." I'm sure we'll borrow them more as he ages and can comprehend more and more of the content!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music by one of its greatest lovers
Wynton Marsalis, one of the greatest musicians of his generation, has always been involved with teaching music. This video is a real must for those who love music - not only jazz, Marsalis' speciality, but all kindsof music. The fourth part, "Tackling the Monster" (in whichMarsalis shows his 12-step method of practicing music), is my favorite one.Inspiring. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Generally considered the first sound feature, this 1927 film is pretty much silent except for a few lines of dialogue and Al Jolson's songs. The story finds Jolson playing the son of a cantor who wants him to follow in his footsteps, but the singer prefers secular music. Except for its historical value, the film isn't all that interesting, though it is great to get a sense of why people considered Jolson to be a hugely exciting entertainer at the time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jolson will always be a star
The Jazz Singer gives us a look back into the past to a very different time; so different from today that some casually call it "corny".Well, the past was what it was and I, for one, find it quite remarkable that this particular film survived while there were so many lost forever.I love it and get a thrill seeing a "window" opened into the past. And to be able to SEE and HEAR the great Al Jolson sing and entertain always thrills me and I can understand the magnetism and appeal he had to the public and why he was so loved by them.Look at the Jazz Singer, not with jaded 2006 eyes, but with eyes eager to see and hear something and someone amazing and you will never forget it.You owe it to yourself to own this bit of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original "Talkie"
This is a grainy film, difficult to concentrate on, but film history buffs will be as riveted as I was. The almost operatic quality of the acting and makeup remind us of the miracle of the talking movie. A must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schmaltzy but still touching
The song numbers are heratwarming. The opening when the Cantor dad drags the kid home is poignant. I guess this film was just made in Hollywood even though much of it is set in New York. It is very touching though corny too. The 1920's is a rarely seen decade now as few talking films were made then. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Keith Richards of Jazz
In his younger years, Chet Baker was quite a good-looking man.In his final days however, he began to physically resemble Johnny Paycheck in the middle of a week-long bender. But the recordings ... the recordings!Fans will want to see this, and hopefully add it to their collections. And in the end, the music is all that matters.Until a better documentary is made, this intimate portrait - warts and all - remains a standout piece of filmmaking ... and probably won't be surpassed.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Dr. Alien is on DVD, anything can be on DVD
Silly that this documentary has not been put out on DVD.I have a VHS copy of this that I found at a thrift store. It is an amazing one, both content-wise and compositionally.Hurry up and release this on DVD...Thanks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this not out on DVD yet?
This is a great film, recapping the life (near it's end at the time the film was made) of trumpet great Chet Baker. If you are reading this you probably know the basics - rapid rise to jazz stardom in the early fifties, natural talent (self taught, did not read music) records landmark versions of "You Don't Know What Love Is," "The Thrill Is Gone" and "My Funny Valentine" (to name a few), develops a truly unique, somewhat androgenous vocal style (haunting does not do it justice) and then descends into a lifelong drug addiction (outliving virtually all of his cohorts who traveled the same road) which, over time, only adds to the legend. He never kicked dope and was fairly unapologetic about it.Moved all over the place in Europe(where he became something akin to a God in jazz fan circles - especially in Italy). In and out of jail - you name it, he did it.Of course, he had all the traits of a junkie - manipulative, selfish, focused on his habit to the exclusion of almost everything else....almost.He continued making great music, to one extent or other, up until the day he fell to his death from a hotel window. This film catches up with him near the end and contains great interviews with Baker himself, many of his former cronies, friends, lovers. It's shot in beautiful black and white and is really a stunning, unusual bio-pic of an amazingly interesting (but more to the point - talented) guy.Look close and you will see young Chris Isaak and Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Why this is not on DVD is beyond me.If you are interested enough in this subject to be reading this, go to ebay - occassionally it is available there on video.

In 1996, with his public image at a low ebb after a messy breakup with Mia Farrow, clarinetist and filmmaker Woody Allen set off on a tour of Europe with his New Orleans jazz band. Accompanying him were his sister, his soon-to-be wife Soon-Yi Previn, and Oscar-winning documentary maker Barbara Kopple. Like Allen says as the beginning of the tour, "Theoretically, this should be fun for us."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry yet Quirky...
In all honesty, I found this film only MILDLY amusing because of the "voyeuristic" pleasure of getting to see Woody Allen "off camera" - - but let's face it, a documentary crew was following the guy around... so when you see him and Soon Yi chatting away in their robes in the privacy of their hotel room, do you really believe they're alone and unwatched and not trying to ACT as they want to be perceived...? So the question is, who was doing the acting ?Based on the fact that both came across as rather dull and uninteresting and I'm sure like many viewers I spent most of the film sitting (unfairly) on the edge of my seat waiting for Woody Allen to say something funny or be more neurotic my answer would be either neither or both, and perhaps the film was merely made to simple counter the bad image of Woody Allen that were going around at the time.- - "Wild man, my tookus !" the viewer is expected to say.- - If the film were to be compared to CRUMB (which I found delightfully entertaining, if not dark and depressing beneath its hillarity at times), in terms of interest it would be like comparing SPEED to MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.
4-0 out of 5 stars Music, fun, and an interesting look at being a celebrity
If you like music and Woody Allen, you will love this endearing documentary by Barbara Kopple. Go behind the scenes as Woody, Soon-Yi, and his band go on a European tour.Allen's wit and quirky but charming personality expose him for the humble and intelligent man he is.But, oy...his mother!

2-0 out of 5 stars Un-Wild Man Blues
Barbara Kopple's "Wild Man Blues" is decidedly un-wild. That's its first fib. It is the un-intense and un-penetrating chronicle of Woody Allen's 1997 European tour with his New Orleans jazz band. Released in 1998, "Wild Man Blues" came hard on the heels of a period of public scandal for the notoriously private filmmaker, prompting critics to dub it a "public relations corrective". There is a whiff of mendacity about this film. Its motive is abstruse and its meaning convoluted. It carries an air of constructivism. It smells like propaganda. Lurking behind an obeisance to jazz music is a salve for moviegoers' indignation over Allen's romance with stepdaughter cum fianc, Soon-Yi Previn. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The story behind the music...
Ok it wasn't exactly what I expected, which teaches me to read the reviews :D, but its still worth the watch to get a feel of those times and how the music came together. I bought it as a gift, and though more music would have been appreciated...it was a good blend of documentary and the music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb music!
I rented this movie on DVD having little knowlege about the subject matter other than it was an award winning documentary. Essentially, for me, it was an introduction to a new type of music. Many years ago in junior high school in a small town in the Rockies my Spanish teacher was a newly arrived Cuban immigrant. He was an excellent teacher and that memory made me curious about this movie. This gathering of semi-retired musicians still has so much soul and if you don't get goose bumps at least once you are probably tone deaf. Unfortunately, I have seen only the Japanese edition here in Japan which has no English subtitles for my Spanish which has grown rusty. Although I can read Japanese subtitles I would prefer English ones for the lyrics.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It's the best band in the land!"
Irving Berlin started it all, though this story is not a biopic. The only part he plays is as an unseen friend to a lower-class girl named Stella (Alice Faye) who sends her "Alexander's Ragtime Band" which helps her get a job in a club and forces her together with two men that play a significant role in her life. "Alex" (Tyrone Power) is her mortal enemy, but the two become quite close after Charlie (Don Ameche), the man who loves her, brings them together. Pitfalls and love triangles make for an interesting story and the great music it is set to really keeps one's toes tapping.
1-0 out of 5 stars Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band
    Good job!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood's Ragpickin' Band
I was disappointed by this film. Tyrone Power, who is apparently devoid of musical talent, portrays a bandleader. Alice Faye, who can't carry a tune, is his Chantoozie. Ethel Merman, the one singer in the cast, never got to sing the title song! In later years she made it famous, probably to stick a finger in the eye of the producer. When "Alex" takes his band to Carnagie Hall in 1938, it is three times the size of the actual Benny Goodman orchestra that played the real gig the movie copies. Perhaps the saddest scenes of all are when Alex Haley, a decent hoofer, has to pretend to be a drummer. Good thing the beat was faster than his sticks! The one saving grace of the film is it was shot close to the period it portrays - so at least they got that right! ... Read more

This concert was wonderful.Grover gave his all in this concert.I love this man music so much when good talent go so young. We much keep his legacy going on. Many artist stepped up to the plate and some amazing tributes to him.I can watch this concert over and over. There is another concert of his on dvd it is a must have too stand room only.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT man, GREAT legend & awonderful entertainer
He's was always real. That's why he was 5 things 1. A prophet 2. A God-given spirit 3. A musical genius 4. An ambassador and 5. A pioneer of the jazz community. I miss him dearly and wish he was here. Could've seen more from the man but he lives right here on this DVD. This would pay tribute 2 him just b/c he was a wonderful artist and a tru pioneer of jazz-funk.

1-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CONCERT - PITY ABOUT THE DVD
It was with great excitement that I ordered this DVD as I am a huge fan of the artist and if anything, an even bigger fan of the backing musicians.I have literally 100's of albums [audio] on which they appear. It was with even greater excitement that I opened the the package when it arrived.I was counting the days till the mailman arrived like akid before Christmas, as the only other visuals I have of them is the "One Trick Pony" video by Paul Simon. When I put it in my DVD player my first reaction was that I had the bad luck to get a dud copy.I re-read the box with all the positive media reviews about the quality etc.and particularly the reference to digital remastering of picture and sound. This I dont believe at all.It looks and sounds like it was merely 'dumped' i.e. transferred from video to DVD as quickly and cheaply as possible without any additional work at all.I have to turn the volume up to max and it sounds like a small radio/ cassette player. My disbelief was so great that my second reaction was to order another copy and discard this one as I could not believe that this was the same product depicted on the box.Oh, I should mention that I am allowing for the time that it was recorded, technology etc. as in the same package I received Paul Simon's"Concert at the Tower theatre Phil." DVD which was recorded one year BEFORE the Grover Washington in 1980 and it HAS been digitally re-mastered and is obviously much, much better in sound and vision. After going back to the AMAZON customer reviews [which I must have overlooked in my initial haste to order this item] I can see that other people had similar opinions to mine.Slipping into my TV 'Columbo' or 'Monk' detective mode I deduce that the media reviews on the box date from previous releases of this concert on earlier formats eg the 80's laser disc that two other customers have referred to.Also there is that old movie review trick of quoting only the good bits and out of context eg that Grover W had never played better than on this occasion. Im sure that's possible but its a pity they didnt capture this performance better.I will keep this DVD just for the pictures [such as they are] and play it with the TV sound off with my album playing 'Winelight' on the stereo for sound.I tried to find the company website on the box to ask them what happened but either I can't locate them or they're in hiding. Now three post scripts which are 'OFF TOPIC' but I'm sure the Amazon staff will screen and edit PS ONE In researching the Amazon customer reviews I came accross the reviews of Mr. Anthony Accordino. What great musical taste this gentleman has! i.e. most similar to mine! I kept on reading his reviewa till late and he even reviews the other DVDs I own and mentions often Eric GALE /Cornell Dupree/Steve Gadd and the group 'Stuff'who are my faviourite artists. I tried to find an email for this obviously cultured gent but no avail .I just hope he reads or is otherwise told about this fellow great mind so we can further think alike.Feel free to pass on my email to him [however I have submitted my wrong address to you Ive learned {there should be a "1" after my name] I shall try to correct it later without confusing you kind people.Which brings me to my 2nd and 3rd PS's TWO Its really great that you guys AMAZON print even negative reviews of products that you are trying to sell! Too bad all media is not this unbiased.PS 3 This comes under the headings "Confession "or "Backhanded Compliment" or both. If you research you will see that I purchased these DVDs through one of your competitors.Never again. I've only posessed a computer for one month and this is all new to me. I did not notice that you have next to your retail price a second discount price which is far cheaper than any of your competition.I currently have an order with you guys and all my future orders will be through you.Further, I shall inform any other luddites that I come accross of my experience too and reccommend that they shop with you. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars For die-hard jazz fans
I appreciate the reviews in which it is suggested that viewers try to experience this film in a broader context--as a time capsule of an era. However, as an avid fan of Anita O'Day, I was deeply frustrated by the camera's focus on odd-looking (check out the chick eating the ice cream cone!), and apparently disinterested listeners in the audience, when the camera should have been focused on this amazing singer. Still, because O'Day--at the height of her sensuous form-- remains sadly undocumented on film, this is the best we've got.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jazz on a Summer's Day
My personal 50s sci-fi favorite, "Invasion" is an ingenious nightmare vision that reflects the paranoia of the time created by McCarthyism.Absent of the effects that characterize more recent entries in this genre, the film remains genuinely creepy strictly on the basis of story, direction and performances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marks the end of the reign of Jazz
Bert Stein captures the Newport Jazz festival of 1958 in vivid color and with clarity. While jazz is the primary focus of the film, Stein does meander to the America's Cup race that was being contested off Newport at the time, along with some diversionary local flavor, which gives us a sense of what it was like to actually be there. Continuing along this vein, during the festival itself, Stein spends much of his camera time observing the audience caught unaware reacting to jazz on a summer day; after all, live music does not exist in a vacuum. It's this footage along with the incredible jazz music that makes this documentary really special. As a viewer we get to react to the music, and react to the audience reacting to the music. That girl with the seductively cute smile in the yellow dress, and that gruff man hiding behind the shades with the nervous twitch are people that we can connect to from our own personal experiences at open air summer concerts. The feeling of community one gets as the music breaks down the barriers and the sun begins to set. Stein allows his moving compositions to develop and flesh out the character of his subjects, giving us a nostalgic feeling for a time gone by that may have occurred long before we were even born. It does not matter because we are there! But this particular slice of time has special significance, because jazz would soon be replaced in popularity by Rock & Roll. We watch it happen before our eyes as a young Chuck Berry takes the stage. Backed by some excellent jazz musicians, all looking "amused" but not taking very seriously the music that would knock them off the charts for good within a couple of years. As Berry's classic Rock & Roll riffs project across the audience, young people spontaneously jump to their feet and start moving to the rhythm while their parents watch, perplexed. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

And what a day it was: nearly 60 jazz musicians, gathered on a Harlem street one morning in 1958 for what photographer Art Kane rightly, if immodestly, calls "the greatest picture of that era of musicians ever taken" (incredibly, it was also Kane's first professional shoot). 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool in Harlem
I bought the VHS Tape years ago with the poster of the photograph and have used it to teach about Jazz in my music classes.I am purchasing the DVD for easier navigation for specific instruction. However, the best thing is using the internet to go to the photo at www.harlem.org.There the kids can click on any person in the photo and find all sorts of info about the artist, the instruments, the music, and CDs available. And thanks to Amazon.com, when you click on a CD or album, you can get to hear a sample of the music. The kids love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond wonderful
For just about everyone, but specifically jazz lovers, this account of the memorable photograph in Harlem in the late 1950's and is really a necessity, and also a wonderful record of the great jazz musicians of the 40's and 50's.This is like visiting the famous who you'd have loved to have been your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good.
yeah both these are good but its really all about thephoto. great to see some of milt hinton's cine footage from the day and other fotos too. the stories are all good from the musicians interviewed even if the photographer does come across a bit of a pratt sometimes. well worth it if you are a jazz fan or appreciate modern history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Final volume in the series introduces four acts in their only appearances.
This final volume of archival film treasures from Universal Studios continues the focus on the Big Bands with additional footage of the greatest names in Swing.Among the "new" performers to make their only appearances in this 4-volume set of tapes are two early do-wop groups--The Mills Brothers and The Skylarks, along with the great Louis Prima and Buddy Rich.
4-0 out of 5 stars I can eat my breakfast cereal watching this video.
This is the 4th volume only in a 4 volume collection. The big band music is really good.
5-0 out of 5 stars See how the "Sultans of Swing" did it
This is an amazing video - where else can you see Count Basie doing "One O'Clock Jump"? You know this wonderful stuff isn't shown on tv anywhere, all you see is little snippets of it on compilation type shows.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent jazz concert video
Although there is very little footage available of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, thankfully, his fiery performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival was magnificently captured on this superb video. The audio and video quality (in color) is surprisingly crisp and clear for a 1972 production and unlike Bert Stern's overly acclaimed video, "Jazz on a Summer's Day," the magnificent camera work stays focused were it should be:on the musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard
Frank with Ethel Merman is entertaining but the Frank and Dean video would be a bargain at ten times the price. It's really Frank and Dean and Bing Crosby and a now forgotten (but once rightly famous) Mitzi Gaynor.Put simply, in my view this is the gold standard of entertainment.Frank was on top form (obviously he had a new girlfriend) and the easy charm of all four performers simply carries you away. The songs are great: Day in, Day out, High Hopes plus two medleys from Frank, Dean and Bing and a light-hearted Cheek to Cheek with Dean, Bing and Mitzi (who holds her own perfectly with the others). The show is full of great touches and ad libs. There is no one around today who could come close to the quality of these performers.Listen to Frank's velvet voice in Talk to Me or Dean's literally supine performance of Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams or Bing in anything or Mitzi's dancing. These were the great entertainers and it's no exaggeration to say that as a piece of entertainment this video cannot be bettered.Plus Nelson Riddle arranged the music and (I almost forgot) there's an excellent section where Frank re-creates a nightclub atmosphere and sings The Lady is a Tramp, Just One of Those Things and others with a five piece band.I can honestly say that I have seen nothing better than this in any medium. ...
