5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for children to music appreciation!
My 5 yo loves classical music, and I found these videos at my library. He loves them! I appreciate how Marsalis uses classical music to help us understand jazz, which I like but never really "appreciated." I'm sure we'll borrow them more as he ages and can comprehend more and more of the content!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music by one of its greatest lovers
Wynton Marsalis, one of the greatest musicians of his generation, has always been involved with teaching music. This video is a real must for those who love music - not only jazz, Marsalis' speciality, but all kindsof music. The fourth part, "Tackling the Monster" (in whichMarsalis shows his 12-step method of practicing music), is my favorite one.Inspiring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SO much fun!
I love ALL the Neena and Veena videos, but this one is one of my favorites. The movements are easy to do and you don't think you've got a great workout going because it doesn't LOOK or feel like you're doing much, and then before you know if you're sweating and tired and it feels great. You do a lot of different moves so it doesn't even feel like you're spending 30 minutes working out.I love, as I said, these vidoes and this combined with the fat burning are better than anything for losing weight and toning up.I used to run five miles every day and I SWEAR these workouts are way better than that and WAY more fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice workout, not for beginner bellydancers
First of all, let me say that this is not for someone who has never experienced bellydancing. They don't explain the moves, I'm guessing that they expect that you've already done their Basic Moves tape. The voiceover says "Now well do this" and they go right into it.No slowing it down. This is a cardio oriented workout, and they don't slow down the pace at all.I also want to mention that while it is a decent arms and abs workout, the part of my body that got the most attention was my calves.Just let me say this.I am a dancer.I have been since I was about 6.I have fairly developed calf muscles. After this workout, honestly, if I didn't know better, I'd say I had never used those muscles before in my life.Wow.The set is amazing, and Neena and Veena are fairly easy to follow. If you're prepared for a serious lower leg workout, this tape is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to Workout but NOT for learning Belly Dancing
i got this tape from a friend and it doe makes you sweat and it works your arms a lot. The tummy too but i felt my arms more. Maybe cuz i already have abs. Anyway this is not for learning belly dancing whille working out, its for a workout only.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Today I REJOICE!I have been waiting for years to hear the news that "TAP" starring the GREATS Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines would be released on dvd.The date is August 29, 2006 so get ready! This movie is tap dance history! Great tap dancers old and young join forces to bring to the screen a celluloid history lesson for those who care to be educated. This is one of my favorite movies and while I haven't been able to watch it since Gregory's passing in August, 2003, I plan to celebrate on the release date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, TAP is coming on August 29, 2006!!
We can now rejoice!Gregory Hines in all his glory is finally being released and will be out on August 29, 2006.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to describe the brilliance of this movie :-)
Wow.Apart from the fact that the late great Gregory Hines was one of the best tap dancers in the universe, this is an amazing movie. It has great music and the dancing is out of this world.

"Belly dancing provides us with a way to stay healthy and fit, and a way to stay relaxed and open," say professional belly dancers Veena and Neena Bidasha. They start by teaching the isolations that they'll incorporate into dance movements later: moving the head from side to side on an imaginary line as if separated from the neck, "snake arms" that seem to float in the air, "shoulder punches" (as if your shoulders have fists) that turn into shimmies when speeded up, "rib slides" (using your torso muscles to push your ribs from side to side), and a variety of hip moves. Then you put it all together and voilà--you're belly dancing! After too short a dance, you get down on the floor for stretching. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bellydance Twins
"I liked this video and the way they instructed the moves. That way people working out to the video will be able to get the moves right and progress everyday as they continue working out to the video."

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS!
This video to me is more of an instruction video than a workout video. They offer the movements step by step, and wonderfully describe each movement being executed.A lot of fun, but probably won't give you the "workout" that you may seek. But definitely very relaxing, might be great if used as a cool down.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun introduction to bellydance moves
This is the first bellydance video I have ever tried, and I enjoyed it.At the start of the workout, the twins jump right into upper body and neck stretches--these days, it's considered a no-no to stretch cold muscles without warming up first, but this DID feel good in my shoulders and neck. They then move on to introducing simple moves such as shoulder and hip "punches," starting the moves slowly and then gradually increasing the pace.In this manner, you learn to go from isolated movements to "shimmies" in your shoulders and hips.I thought some of the hip movements were particularly fun, although it took me a few tries to catch on at times. At the end of the workout, there are a few brief moves on the floor to work your inner thighs and provide a stretch, and then it's back to standing for a final stretch, bringing the workout in at a total of about 28 minutes.Although I found this video to be fun, I felt that it provided only a very light workout, mostly through the toning work in the upper body and perhaps a bit of cardio work during the faster movements towards the end. Therefore, the video would probably be best suited to beginning exercisers who need a gentle, low-impact workout or more experienced exercisers who enjoy doing a lighter workout now and then. ... Learn some of the hottest dance moves you've seen in music videos, awardshows, and concerts from the likes of Britney Spears, 'N Sync, and Jordan Knightfrom this 55-minute video. Darrin Henson moves with limbs of taffy as he teachesthe energetic and innovative moves he choreographed for the biggest celebrities. He breaks down the patterns into individual moves, then quickly puts the movestogether, and then you perform the pattern with video clips from the stars forwhom it was choreographed. Great fun! Unless you're blessed with instant recall, though, you'll need to rewind segments of the tape frequently to learn themoves. And unfortunately, Henson cues his own "right" and "left" instead of theviewer's (the opposite, because you're facing him), so you have to continuallyreverse his directions in order to mirror his moves. Recommended for limber, experienced dancers--coordination required! Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Popping and Locking Routine
Most of the choreography on this DVD is lackluster and uninspiring. But there's a great--and very simple--popping/locking routine at the end. It's very different from everything else on this DVD. And there are some brief but helpful technique points at the end of the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars OMGOSH!!!!
This video was great if you're a beginner. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, and my friends were still amazed by the dance moves I got down! You only have to watch it like 10 times, and it is SO WORTH IT!!!! But I think it's only for Beginners-Advanced Dancers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
This is a fun video to watch and it has a good message. But its NOT as easy as "1,2,3". I teach some of these same moves to my students and we have to take a great deal of time with each element of the more complex steps. This video is great if you can already dance this style and just want to learn some new moves. But it will be very dissapointing for someone who has never tried this before. I have it in DVD and that allows me to review and slow down the action much easier than you could with VHS. Still, it is challenging. Worth having, but not as a first instructional. Also, it is a bit dated by todays standards. But still fun. ... Read more

Do you envy ballet dancers their long, lean bodies and graceful, elegant movements? This beautifully produced exercise video was developed by Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet with the New York Sports Club. First you watch the rippling muscles of four gorgeous ballet dancers (two men and two women) performing warm-up moves to classical ballet music. Martins uses ballet terminology in his cuing and no technique is taught, so it's look-and-follow if you have no previous ballet training. Next you get down on a mat for slow lower-body stretches. A difficult abdominal series is next, followed by "floor barre" exercises to tone the thighs and buttocks while still using the abdominals. After introducing moves to strengthen the back and upper body, Martins runs through a series of standing exercise segments using various ballet movements to strengthen the legs and postural muscles. The workout is divided into 17 short sections, which may give it a disjointed feeling if you're used to more continuity. At the end is a bonus sequence with profiles of the four performers, all dancers with the New York City Ballet. We get to watch them performing, practicing, and eating. One dancer makes the point that ballet is very athletic, but because it's supposed to look ethereal, the hard work stays hidden from the audience. If you love ballet (even just watching it), you'll enjoy this workout. (By the way, Sarah Jessica Parker introduces the video but does not have any other role in it.) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and artistic--definitely not your standard workout DVD!
The New York City Ballet Workout has more in common with a film playing at your local art house theatre than the average workout DVD.It is artistically masterful--a work of art in light and shadow and movement of the human body. But is it a good workout?
5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
I love this workout. It is so relaxing and has increased my flexibility. Even when I am tired, I can do this workout and feel energized and relaxed at the same time. At first I had a difficult time, because I had not done any ballet before. However, after about two weeks of doing the workout three times of week, my balance and flexibility were beginning to improve, and my legs became more familiar with the positions.
4-0 out of 5 stars NYC Ballet Video

    Editorial Review

Belly dancers are known for their ability to isolate and move one body part at a time. This video helps you tone arms and abs by learning isolations that target just those muscles. The arm routine uses smooth, flowing movements that complement the accompanying hip moves. Special motions of the wrists and fingers make the moves look dramatic and fluid, sometimes snakelike. Meanwhile, you're working your abdominals by lifting, shifting, and circling your ribcage. This video, more than the others in this series, makes you feel and look like a belly dancer. For example, you do "Egyptian arms" (picture yourself balancing a dinner tray on each hand, elbows at shoulder height, flexed wrists at ear height, fingertips away) while lifting and shifting your ribcage from side to side. The 30-minute workout includes some difficult abdominal moves done on the floor, body weight resting on feet and arms, torso lifted. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Unique upper body toning routine
Bellydance Fitness Arms and Abs is designed to tone your upper body using bellydance-inspired movements. In the first half of the workout, you will do a variety of arm movements, most of which require you to hold the arms at shoulder level or above. Although the voiceover instruction suggests that these moves will tone your biceps and triceps, I felt them mostly in my shoulders, which quickly became fatigued. Eventually, you move on to working the chest and ribs, mainly through isolation movements. The final ten minutes of this workout are performed on the floor. You'll start with several non-traditional abs exercises--eg, leg lifts while propped on your elbows--and then you'll work on more traditional crunches. The workout finishes with several yoga-inspired stretches, and the total time comes in at about 28 minutes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, my poor arms...
I barely made it through the warm-up, so I know this one is good.My arms and abs are probably the weakest parts of my body, so I was drawn to this video by its title.Veena and Neena aren't nearly as annoying as some exercise video instructors, and they make it all look so effortless.I'll definitely be working out to this video for a while, until I can make it through the whole thing.Fun and a great workout, which is what I've been looking for. After this I'll buy anything Veena and Neena put out.

This is a great series for begining bellydancing. It will help you work all the way up and you can go at your own pace. The Instructors are knowledgeable and I love the format of the video. Overall worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging but great instruction
I found this tape to be a great instruction for more difficult moves , that are not found in beginner tapes.I think the instructions in these tapes are the most complete and easy to understand than in most other belly dance instructional videos. Neena and Veena are always shown at full body view, and turn sideways to show further instruction to some movements. They show footwork , and one nice thing is that they do not wear overwhelming costumes so you are allowed to see the movements without obstruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for review and practice

It will also help you understand how bellydance moves can be combined to form a dance. I bought this dvd because I was out of shape, looking for some variety in my workout routine, and because it was so well rated.
4-0 out of 5 stars Spontaneous dance, great instruction, somewhat poor structure
I will warn everyone that this is workout is not typical aerobic-style workouts, where there is a strict structure and pattern of dance. Wyoma imparts the spontaneity of African dance into the class, and while she guides you on the dances, she does not give you counts or very many transitions. Wyoma is a dancer, and is not approaching this from an aerobic exercise perspective. This workout is going to be different from your Crunch or Tae-Bo workouts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good One
I'd have bought this video just for the solos Wynton plays on it.They're more than worth the cost of the tape. The history of the development of early jazz is good stuff, too, though. It's all done through musicalexamples and is just as good for kids as it is for practicing musicians. Worth your dollar. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tape for Beginners
This is a great tape for beginners. It shows you all the basic steps needed to start dancing socially. The steps are timeless even though the tape is a little dated. If you practice each segment on the tape you should feel comfortable enough to get started dancing in public- and that's the key to enjoying dancing. The first time you get on a dance floor you will want to show off your new talents. Buy the tape and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instruction vs. Inspiration
Clear instructions, but with a very "1950's feel".Everything appears very dated, not making one anxious to learn the steps and get out there and have fun.But the movements are well explained and shown clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to-dance tape
Margot Scholz clearly tells us how to dance. She shows the steps slowly at first and then faster with a partner. She covers the basics of form, posture, and leading in addition to the foot movements. She picks good rhythms that are easy to dance to.It is the best tape we found and my partner and I tried a good half dozen.Margot is the best. ... Editorial Review

Who hasn't had the dream of being a tap dancer? Bonnie Franklin, formerly with Donald O'Connor and a tap dancer since the age of 9, makes your dream come true--at least in your living room. Franklin is a warm, motivating and skillful teacher, and she obviously loves tap dancing. The former TV sitcom star leads you through your first steps, appropriate for the two-left-feet among us. Later sections get progressively more complex. Learn a basic tap step, then another, practice and practice, and put them together. Before long, you're dancing complete routines. The video runs 86 minutes, but Franklin suggests you stop and practice a section until you're proficient rather than trying to get through it all at once.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love to Dance!Great DVD!
I have been taking tap for a few years. This is perfect for beginners if you need the basics, she will teach you starting with the most basic steps. If you know how to tap dance move ahead to the routines. There are three great routines. You can do one or all three. She breaks each part down and explains it well.I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to dance.A great way to practice at home!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!
This video is EVERYTHING I expected and MORE!Bonnie really is clear with her instructions and does a great job of helping you understand what you are doing.Through the routines, you enjoy yourself, you learn, you sweat and you pant, because she really does give you a good, healthy, cardio workout.I would suggest that anyone just starting out go at a slower pace.Don't try to do the video all at once, especially if you have health issues.Learn where your limits are and go further as you develop your stamina. This video is definitely worth the money! You would pay many times the price to learn the same thing in a studio.Plus, you have the ability to practice at home, every day.No gasoline prices, weather extremes, heavy traffic, or schedules to deal with.Practice when your lifestyle permits.Taking classes along with this video would be beneficial, but during spells when no studio classes are available, this video will definitely get you through the season! If your goal is to lose weight, stick with a regular routine of this workout and watch your diet (just because you want to eat healthier) and you *should* be able to lose weight and have fun at the same time!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Dance How-To Out There
I wish she would put out more like this, it is superior.I have dozens of dance/exercise videos (bellydance, tap, hip-hop, etc.)The instructional format and Bonnie's teaching are exceptional - better than any other.First she shows you what each of three routines look like.Next she teaches each routine. Her instructions are clear and perfectly paced. Then she runs through the routine with you at a moderate tempo (this is the tempo I usually use to practice).Last, she performs each routine again up to speed. You come away with three great and basic tap dance routines that I am still practicing years after I learned them.I can't say this about any other tape/dvd I have. The routines progress in difficulty; the time step is exhausting and a great workout, even for dancers with some experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
Our kid'a love it! Mr Wynton Marsalis is the bomb! Our middle school just isn't teaching this, and as the only really original music from the USA I feel jazz is pretty important! You won't be sorry! In fact the whole family will enjoy this fine box set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis On Music is an instant classic.
Marsalis on Music is the young people's series for our time, hosted by Wynton Marsalis, the most popular and acclaimed jazz musician of his generation anddistinguished classical performer as well.Withhelp from his jazz band and students from the Tanglewood Music Center, led by Seiji Ozawa, Wynton puts a fresh spin on music appreciation. His inspired instruction, backed by superb performances and exciting animated graphics, not only teaches the fundamentals of music, but makes learning fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis on Music, from a music teacher's perspective
This video series is certainly not a substitute for a sound music education, and does not promote itself as such.It focuses on the elementsof jazz and jazz theory, a component that is lacking or inadequate in mostof the popular music curriculums for the elementary and junior high school. I like this particular series for several reasons. First, it is somethingI would leave a substitute teacher because the students can watch it andthere is plenty of room for discussion and practice later on.Second,as asuccessful African-American musician, he is a good role model for youngmusicians. I work with at-risk students, and have found that it isimportant to present them with some positive, successful role models thatare culturally diverse. Finally, the presentation is attention grabbing.Marsalis has a way of communicating clearly in this series. He explainsmusical concepts from the simplest to some that are fairly complex in a waythat is direct. There is a lot of basic music theory embedded in thisseries. Plus, it's more fun than lecturing, and kids seem to enjoy it as achange of pace. It's not a substitute for good teaching, but it cansupplement and round out a good music education program. ... Editorial Review

If you only had one Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers film to watch, this classic musical from 1936 would be your best bet. It was the dance duo's sixth film together, and director George Stevens handled the material with as much flair behind the camera as Fred and Ginger displayed in front of it. This time out, Fred plays a gambling hoofer who's engaged to marry a young socialite (Betty Furness), but when he's late for the wedding his prospective father-in-law sends him away, demanding that he earn $25,000 before he can earn his daughter's hand in marriage. When Fred meets Ginger in a local dance studio (where he pretends to be a klutz so she can be his instructor), he's instantly smitten and the $25,000 deal becomes a moot point. Featuring six songs by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields (including a splendid rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight") and some of the most elegant dance sequences ever filmed, this lightweight fluff epitomizes the jazz-age style of 1930s musicals, virtually defining the genre with graceful joie de vivre. 4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
This movie has some very funny parts and characters. There are also some great song and dance numbers.Of course to talent of Astaire and Rogers cannot be contested, but I was surprised at how funny it was.I think that people that didn't like musicals or old movies could find something to enjoy in this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swing Time
A memorable performance by the famous duo of Astaire and Rogers. They excel themselves in the classic number 'Pick Yourself Up'.Although Fred and Ginger made many memorable movies together, this is one you shouldn't miss.Funny and entertaining.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moronic
I'm watching the film right now, and it is perhaps the most moronic and stupidly annoying film I've ever seen. There's nothing amusing going on.It's all fluff and show.It is such garbage.I find it offensively stupid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
This tape was a great introduction to the art of bellydancing for the novice.I appreciate the other reviews that prompted me to purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars the tape that started it all...
my friend gave me this tape, she'd never tried it, was still unopened. i tried it once but didn't make it past the arms part because i was too impatient. four months later i threw it on and
4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
Basic Dance was one of my first introductory videos into the art of Belly Dance. It was the most helpful and continues to be. First I used it to learn bellydance. Then I still used it to practice, and now I'm using the choreography for my school's diversity night! The rich Egyptian style music never gets boring and gives you a taste of the MiddleEast. Veena and Neena have an easy and sensual approach to teaching the bellydance moves that'll transform you into the Goddess that you are! It's fun, low-impact but effective, sensual, liberating, and a true artform! If you're interested in Bellydane than trust me this video is the BEST start you could find. All their other videos are also fantastic too! Also, this video's great if you're an instructor looking for a choreography to teach your beginner students! ... Read more
