5-0 out of 5 stars Get Thee To DVD At Once!
DVD please? I saw this movie when it aired on A&E, and it captivated me as a child, and still does as an adult. The theme song is great, and I still find myself listening to it!!! I became a fan of Sandra Dee's after I saw her in "Gidget" and "Imitation Of Life" and I thought her performance was so real and heart-wrenching. Constance Ford, as her bitchy, controlling mother Helen, gives a strong portrayal of a bitter, frigid, unhappy woman who takes her anguish out on everyone around her, even her daughter. (She really gives Mommie Dearest a run for her money). The scene where she forces Molly to submit to a pelvic exam after she and lover-boy Johnny (the late Troy Donahue) have an accident on the beach (the boat capsizes) is horrible and makes the viewer grimace. The fact that the doctor was old and gross looking, and began to unbutton Molly's blouse without her consent, as she screamed, "Oh please, no, I want my father! I've been a good girl! I haven't done anything wrong!!" makes it uncomfortable, but it also makes you despise Ford's character, as I'm sure that was the intention. Richard Egan as Molly's father Ken, is so handsome and gentle at times (he was equally effective in Walt Disney's "Pollyanna" as Dr. Chilton) is a man who is trapped in a loveless marriage who finds and falls in love again with Dorothy McGuire, as Sylvia, his first love, who also happens to be the mother of Molly's boyfriend, Johnny!!! One of Egan's best lines is as he and Helen are having an explosive argument. Ken finishes off his end by saying, "Why must you insist on making sex itself a filthy word!" Arthur Kennedy, as Johnny's drunken father Bart was one of the actor's best later performances. The conflict between the two couples and the predicament that follows (Molly becomes pregnant by Johnny) was considered racy for its day, but considering how little is shown, you have to wonder what all the fuss was about!!! (Although the "King Kong" reference could bear some debate on that subject). The argument between Molly and her mother at the beginning of the movie, sums up the times and also, in a way, the relationships between mothers and daughters. Molly: "Daddy, do I have to?" Ken: "Do you have to what?" Molly: "Wear this middy blouse to shore like a twelve-year-old! And she says I have to wear this armor-padded bra to flattenme out and a girdle! This thing even hurts, and I couldn't squeeze into this girdle with dynamite!"

C'mon when are these people going to wise up and release this fantastic movie on DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Angus: A great movie! Needs a DVD release!
"Angus" is a movie about a shy 14 year old who doesn't fit in. He is humiliated and picked on by others at school, and spends most of his time hanging out with his friend, another outsider named Troy, and his grandfather, and dreaming of being with the school's hottest cheerleader, Melissa Lefevre. One day, his dreams come true, somewhat, when he is chosen to dance with Melissa at the Winter Ball. However, the set up was planned by Melissa's boyfriend, and Angus' arch nemesis, Rick Sanford. Angus decides to finally stand up to Rick, and lets him know that he prefers to be different.

ok, so yeah. This movie is like.... awesome! I was in florida on vacation when my mother first saw it and she told me on the phone that I had to see it because all she thought while watching the movie was that it was my life. honestly, anyone who has ever been the pet whipping boy of their school should see this movie. hell, anyone wh ever bullied someone because they were different should see it, they may learn a lesson from it. from the beginning it grabs your attention and holds it all the way through the end. I really wish they would hurry up with the dvd release of it. the soundtrack is phenominal. I still get funny looks when people are looking through my cd case and find the CD with a blowup doll on it. lol. one song that I l;oved in the film, however is not one the soundtrack. for any of you looking for this song it's by peter gabriel and it's called the washing of the water. but aside from the soundtrack. 3-0 out of 5 stars Imitation of Laff
A lot of people love this movie and so do I--but probably not for the same reason. Not for nothing was this the last gasp of the Ross Hunter tearjerkers in the "Imitation of Life"/"Back Street" mode. By the mid-Sixties, this type of hokum was far more comic than melodramatic--just look at the ridiculous casting, which includes a 40-something Lana Turner (who'd just played Sandra Dee's mother/stepmother in her last few pictures) as a young bride. . . having her first child! Surrounding her with inappropriate actors like bland John Forstyhe (as her middle-aged ambitious "young" husband) and veteran Constance Bennett (who somehow looks more like Lana's younger sister than her mother-in-law) didn't help realism. Cheesy production values and anacronisms (all the women are dressed in the height of Sixties middlebrow fashions--in scenes taking place thirty years earlier!) just add to the fun. A real howl, especially when an Oscar-hungry Turner goes to pot in the final reels. You'll cry alright--with laughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greats!
If you're looking for a rainy afternoon or late night tearjerker, bursting at the seams with impeccable style, glamour and delicious disaster, this is your film. Only Lana Turner can deliver such wistful heartbreak in the finest gowns and jewels one instant, and next be the tragic victim of misfortune, suffering as only those who fall from on high can know.To call it melodrama would be an insult, this is classic cinema, with Hollywood royalty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of DVD To Kill a Mockingbird
The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Picture Is Worth A Million Words!
Words alone cannot describe the effect this made for tv movie had on me when I watched the original showing on tv (1977).I was taken aback at how realistically they were allowed to portray this man's (Haley) story, which in effect was the story of the entire Black race and, to a large degree, the White race in this country! For Blacks it was like reliving their history. For Whites it was a serious enlightenment (and in some cases a rude awakening). It managed to open the door for dialogue between the races, and inspired a whole nation to get involved with genealogy too. Most importantly, it inspired most of this nation to say "never again."I have to agree with D. Hammork though in that I'm shocked and appalled at Amazon for leaving LeVar Burton and John Amos (who both played the MAIN character)off of their list of people who STARRED in this movie! This movie launched Burton's career; and John Amos had already been a star in his own right! Please get your act together!

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie brings the novel Jane Austen wrote to life brilliantly!
I have read Jane Austen's novel called "Pride and Prejudice" many times, and when I saw that a movie version of it would be on television, I didn't have much hope that it would be a faithful rendering of the book. But when I watched the movie on television, it matched Jane Austen's novel, word for word. It was a masterful production, and the actors chosen to portray the characters were perfect in the roles they played. I knew I had to own a copy of this beautiful movie! (I had seen a shorter movie of "Pride and Prejudice" on television, and it bore very little resemblence to the novel written by Jane Austen.) I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves novels written by Jane Austen.

5-0 out of 5 stars closest to the book
I loved this version, it was the closest to the book of all the versions i have seen, including the 2005 one.Jennifer Ehle also to me is the most authentic Elizabeth of them all, and I would say overall the rest of the cast match the books characters more closely, with maybe Mr. Bennet being a little more humorous in this version than the book.I'm not sure about fashions in that time period, but I have a feeling it was the most authentic as far as fashion goes. For example, I think most women at that time period and of that class level and agewould never be seen in public with their hair down, it would always be up, but in the 2005 version Elizabeth goes to Meryton out in public with her hair down. Also, it was the most authentic as far as language goes, in the 2005 version phrases/passages were changed for a modern audience to understand it better, but I prefer it spoken as it is in the book.Jennifer Ehle and Susannah Harker meet the maturity aspect of the women in the book as opposed to other versions where they are portrayed as mentally much younger and naive, and sometimes even giddy.I would have to say colin Firth is my favorite Darcy too, even though I had no problem with the guy in the 2005 version. I've also seen a 1980's version, and I think something from the 1970's, as well as the old 1940's version, so I've seen a few.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Mr. Darcy
I have watched several versions of Pride and Prejudice, and loved them all.

    Editorial Review

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Soundtrack...
The musical score in the original version underlined the melodrama in an almost 1950's way.The new version is not only more true to S.E. Hinton's novel but the soundtrack is much more appropos, in time with the early/mid 1960's backdrop of the story. You can't get more timeless than bluesy surf garage rock mixed with Sun era/early RCA Elvis. The new sounds juxtaposed against the original 'Stay Gold' theme provide a relief which further accentuates the beauty of the original composition.

I disagree with the characterization of most of the reviews here.I didn't see the father as a heartless man, but as a father trying to protect his overly dull and reclusive daughter from a fortune hunter. At first meeting, he seems very happy that his daughter, Catherine, has found a suitor and welcomes him cordially, but after talking to him he discovers that he is a selfish fortune hunter, a mercenary, who cares only for himself, and nothing for his daughter or anyone else, even his own aunt who has several children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas movie
I have worn out my VHS tape I copied off tv many years ago of this Christmas classic.I will be thrilled if they ever release it and the other Addie Mills specials on DVD. I always looked forward to seeing them when they aired. It was nice seeing the review from Lisa Lucas (Addie Mills).Nice to hear she enjoyed making these movies and knows how much pleasure she brought us all. She and Mildred Natwick and Jason Robards were so special together.

It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...

I loved watching this T.V. special when I was a young--er.I was about the same age too as Addie, and I looked forward to watching it year after year after year, but then they stopped running the special and I was so disappointed.I just took a chance to see if I could find it for sale on the Internet and low and behold, I found it so I just placed my order! You have no idea how thrilled I was to see that it was available to buy.I can't wait to see it again, considering it's been about 30 years or more since I've seen it.I couldn't remember the name of the special but all I knew for certain was Jason Robards played Addie's dad, and Mildred Natwick played her grandmother. It was one of the best things I've ever seen on T.V., and now I can pass this on to my children.

I chose this film over Gibson's The Patriot for my son to view as part of his course on American history and literature, with no regrets.
3-0 out of 5 stars A bit clipped
This film leaves me a bit on the confused side. Costuming is first class and excellant. The Scenery and settings are first rank. Battle scenes are good and appear realistic. But the plot leaves me a bit confused. I would be inclined to ask if this was originally planned as a great mini-series except the best parts have been clipped out and the rest stitched back together to form something within a time limit.

I wrote a review for this film six years ago while I was a college history student. After one more degree, and six more years of study in the history field, I still consider this film the best treatment of the American Revolution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somehow, I can never resist watching a broadcast of this one
I shall confess that this film is a 'guilty pleasure' for me as well. The story is unrealistic and melodramatic. Lana Turner's outdated, 'plastic' leading lady ways show that her acting abilities are on the lowest level of anyone except the 'cute and perky' Sandra Dee. Dialogue is dreadful, from the photographer's saying he'll have a 'love affair with Lora's bones' to Lora's telling Annie, whom she had known and shared a residence with for over a decade, that she never thought she had any friends.

'Shadowlands' is a film you must be willing to sit through to appreciate, for the first twenty minutes are dreadfully boring. That said, once you get past the exterior and get to the meat of this tragic love story you'll be emotionally drawn into each frame. The true life story of C.S. Lewis (Hopkins) is a beautiful story of love, trust and the ability to allow suffering to appreciate that love and trust.Jack (as C.S. Lewis is reffered) has built a life of comfort for himself, a life around those who can't hurt him.He enjoys the fact that he hasn't felt the cold hand of suffering in his lifetime, but after meeting the beautiful and bold Joy Gresham (Debra Winger) all that is about to change.Joy is a divorced poet who brings her young son to see Jack (beings that he has written the succesfull Narnia franchise) and she immediatly becomes smitten with Jack, as he does her.Their relationship, strickly platonic, changes as Joy is diagnosed with cancer and given a short time to live. The remainder of the film is so heartbreaking for it shows Jack realizing how much he loves this woman, and his faith is tested as he wonders why God would allow this to happen. As Jack soon realizes, it's the suffering now that allowed us the love then...it's a package deal (that's not exactly the way he says it, but it's the general jist).Anyways, it's a truly wonderful film with brilliant acting on all parts, Winger and Hopkins taking the bulk of the praise.Just remember, stick it out and you'll appreciate why! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Really Bad
I have got to say that is is one of the worst books I have ever read. I picked it to read off a summer reading list when i was 10 just because i liked the title. All it is, is a girl tries to save her brother when everyone is leaving their island, and they get left behiend. Spoiler ahead.
4-0 out of 5 stars Island of the Blue Dolphins/Movie
I've always loved this movie; I guess the main reason is, I'm a big lover of dogs and when I first viewed Island of the Blue Dolphins, it was the dog (in it)which grabbed my interest. Maybe he reminded me of Walt Disney's Old Yeller; guitly as charged. Loved that mutt, too. At any rate..
4-0 out of 5 stars Journey through the Island of the Blue Dolphins
This book offers an insight to the world of an Indian girl left to fend for herself on a deserted Island off the coast of California. She learns how to survive by going against her cultural traditions such as making weapons. She also had to learn survival techniques to be able to eat and take shelter. This was an interesting book and I would recommend it to students and teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christmas Stories Ever
It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my all time favorite T.V. special!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe wanted to play GRUSHENKA in this movie, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV
This was the movie for which Marilyn Monroe wanted desperately
5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated.
It practically goes without saying that this Hollywood production is inadequate as an adaptation of a monumental novel. On the other hand, even when judged as an adaptation, "Brothers Karamazov" strikes me as superior to efforts to film similar weighty Russian novels such as "War and Peace" and "Dr. Zhivago."The elder Karamazov (Lee J. Cobb) and his four sons, including Yul Brynner, Richard Basehart, and William Shattner, are so sharply realized they have remained vivid in my memory for over four decades. The same goes for Maria Schell (whose alluring, enigmatic magnetism must have had the same effect on me as Garbo's persona is said to have had on audiences in the '30's) and Claire Bloom, the two women vying for Brynner's affections. Finally, credit the evocative score of Bronislaw Kaper ("On Green Dolphin Street") and the efficient yet imaginative direction of Richard Brooks (responsible for the equally underrated "Looking for Mr. Goodbar").
5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Greed and Everthing You'd Want!
Yul Brynner was a great actor and this movie shows a more sensitive side of his charactor than his cowboy flicks. It also contemplates the issues of God, conscience, good and evil. I didn't read the book,I'm judging this movie on it's own merit. It is one of my favorite "old movies", you see multi-dimensional sides of the charactors as they deal with love, greed, family conflicts and jealousies. I think the actors play their parts well and you can relate to why the charactors respond in their ways to each other. I don't think Yul got as much acclaim as an actor and leading man as was deserved. He was the first man to make bald, sexy! ... Read more
