So says a noted professor in the beginning of this film, and the stories that follow bear witness to that fact.Several endangered species are documented here. There is the Black-footed Ferret, the Manatee, the Golden Trout, the Red Wolf of the Southeast, and several more.

This video chronicles a day in the life of just a few of America's most endangered species. As an educator, I found the video very moving, and would recommend showing it to any class. It sheds new light on thedisastrous situation that is occurring in OUR backyards, giving aninteresting and informative autobiography of some of our nation's topendangered species and the folks who are trying to do something about theirplight.A great variety of species are included, from the Palisades bluebutterfly to the manatee.A must see! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Science Film for my class
My students who are a bloodthristy crew if ever there was one just loved this film. If you have a pack of Teen age students, then here you go when you want Mr. VCR to teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Informative - Strongly Recommended!
This video, focusing on a group of crocodiles living in the Grumeti river where it is crossed by an annual wildebeest migration, provides a wealth of information about how crocodiles live, while still being enjoyable and entertaining.5-0 out of 5 stars I have seen ALL the CROCODILE Videos; This One is the BEST!
I have seen ALL the Crocodile videos currently available and this one is by far the most comprehensive with regards to the Nile Crocs and how they live.By focusing on perhaps the most interesting group, the Gremeti RiverCrocs, this video delivers "the goods".From the edge of yourseat hunting strikes to the caring raising of baby crocs, this video doesnot disappoint. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Emergency Information!!!
When we first received this video as a baby shower gift, we thought that it was an instructional CPR video. We were so impressed with all of the other information it included on how to take care of infant emergency situations - and the infant care tips were great! We feel this video has helped us learn more as new parents and helped boost our confidence in caring for our newborn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it!
This video is presented well and I feel that the information is invaluable - especially for first time parents!. This was a wise investment for us!

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
The CPR section was well done, and I'm sure I'll watch it several times. But I expected more demonstrations about emergencies. After all, that is the power of video vs a book or magazine article.Instead, the information was delivered in a sit down interview format - very disappointing. It was also less detailed than a small book on home childproofing that I have. I didn't learn anything new.In my opinion, definitely not worth the cost. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars *Very* mediocre production
We bought this videotape for my daughter, who is now 20 months old.My wife and I are interested in having her learn German.5-0 out of 5 stars A good first video to introduce your baby to German.
My daughter really enjoys watching this video. She watches more than half the video (about a half an hour) before moving on to another activity. Considering she is only 13 months old, that is quite an accomplishment. She watches the video between 1 and three times a day.Whenever she hears the music for the video, she comes running to the TV.Read more

Editorial Review

Making algebra entertaining seems like a hopeless, if not downrightinsane, task, but that doesn't stop the Standard Deviants. A youthful cast of performers, who believe no joke, skit, or costume is too corny as long as it helps a student remember something important, throw themselves into "The Adventurous World of College Algebra" by beginning with a spoof of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Inside a cave, two Indiana Jones wannabes search for, you guessed it, x. Despite the lighthearted approach, this is a serious algebra review course, compiled under the direction of academic advisers. The lessons begin by answering, "What is algebra?" and quickly move into quadratic roots and factors and a section on linear equations. A wacky sense of humor stays a constant, with spoofs of pop culture programs as well as flashy computer graphics appearing to illustrate essential concepts. At the end of each lesson a quiz appears (which the student can take or skip), and the DVD also contains the "Algebra Adventure," a multiple choice test taken by using the DVD player's remote control.A "Quick Review" segment provides a fast overview of the contents. This is an innovative approach to what has often been a daunting and dry subject.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational. Not sure if education will dominate the entertainment.
This is the strangest educational video that I have ever seen. The creators use a character called Idaho Jones that is "modeled" on the screen adventurer Indiana Jones. It starts with a scene similar to the opening one of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Idaho is with a woman in a cave and has discovered a golden X. He replaces it with an algebra textbook, but it is too light, causing all the traps to be triggered. After he avoids the traps, a character modeled after the sadistic Nazi in the "Raiders" movie takes the X from him.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I recommend this to anyone having trouble in Algebra. It walks you through problems and gives you the terminology of the subject. Great for reviews.

4-0 out of 5 stars Savior
I found the tapes helped me a great deal, considering I have been out of school for 20 years and never learned algebra in high school. The animations are wonderful and most of the time very clear.Of course with anything, you have to do it over and over again until you retain the information, but I will definitely say "Do not start school with out the tapes."There's only one catch, Standard Deviants recorded the tapes so that they build upon one another and you'll need to buy the entire math collection if you want a totally clear understanding.I live by Standard Deviants.Good Luck... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTRO TO THE AMAZON
This video is a good intro into the life of the Amazon.I enjoyed how it balances the strangeness appeal of different creatures in the jungle with the scientific rigour to explain the terrain and the different environments animals and plants face throughout the year (rainy flooded season, dry season, etc.)5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
Wonderful images. I could watch this with the volume on mute and just enjoy the scenes. The commentary is great too, though. Very informative without being the least bit boring. A great addition to my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Flooded Forest
This video is one of the best of National Geographic's video series. It provides a lot of information about the Amazon basin wildlife and though I have seen it many times I still enjoy watching it.It contains information on a wide assortment of creatures as well as the continuous cycle of flooding and draining the Amazon forest goes through. It talks about all sorts of strange creatures that are very exotic and beautiful.I like the way the information is presented as well as the fact that it is very scientifically accurate (I am a scientist).I also like the fact that it closes by talking about how the forest is being changed through cutting the trees and building dams on the river. It provides lots of information in a short period of time and gives a good rounded view at a land that is strange and different. ... In another beautiful production from Living Arts, teacher Rodney Yee brings 18 years of experience to a workout designed specifically to stretch, strengthen, and energize the upper body. On a sunny hillside overlooking the ocean on Maui, Yee flows through poses designed to develop an open, supported chest, which in turn promotes healthy circulation, breathing, digestion, and posture. Comprised of sun salutations, back bends, and a cool down, this complete 20-minute routine offers lots of instruction to keep the poses dynamic. A folded blanket under the palms may help people with weak wrists and/or repetitive stress injuries who find it difficult to hold the poses as long as Yee does. A rolled blanket is necessary for some of the stretches, and a sticky mat is recommended. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Unwinding After Work!
This video has been a godsend to me for unwinding after work. The exercises target the places where we all feel tight after sitting at a desk all day: the neck, shoulders, and upper and lower back. Yee's videos always feel as much like meditation as yoga. His soothing voice and slow pace is so relaxing, along with the peaceful locations (this one is filmed on a grassy hill in Maui, overlooking the ocean). This video contains lots of "down dog" and "upward dog" moves, along with a few backbends and even some leg stretches to balance out all the upper body work. And don't be afraid of the backbends! He starts slow with moves that will prepare your back for this!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner?
I have mixed feelings about this and other tapes in the Living Arts/Gaiam series.I feel that they offer good workouts, but are NOT for beginners.5-0 out of 5 stars A short, challenging workout but doable for beginners.
First of all, several reviewers have mentioned that this tape is not for beginners, but it is important to remember that ALL of the videos in the Living Arts series recommend that you start with "Yoga Practice for Beginners" if you are not familiar with yoga poses. That being said, this is a relatively fast-paced tape that can be a little hard to follow at first, so I'd highly recommend watching the tape before attempting to follow along.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a book!
I was initially hesitant to spend $45.00 on this video...I thought the price was a little high.I justified it, however, after reading the other reviews, figuring if I could actually learn to crochet with the video I would save money by not having to take a class.Well, I am now a novice crocheter! The video was excellent....it offers step by step instructions on the different stitches and guidance on the patterns as well.Having a video is great, you can keep rewinding to watch the stitches you have trouble with...over and over and over if necessary! The patterns are a bit outdated, but great practice, and you can jazz them up with more modern yarns and bigger needles.I have successfully completed two scarves and three shawls and I haven't even viewed the 4th chapter yet.I think it's an excellent resource and highly recommend purchasing this video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crochet From Start to Finish*ing - Excellent How-to for Beginners on up
I have been researching "how to" crocheting books/tapes for several weeks, and most of the information I've found to date to be confusing and inadequate unless you had prior experience with crocheting. This video is very clear for a beginner with absolutely no experience.I have successfully crocheted a beautiful scarf within two weeks, and I'll start on a throw in the near future.I expect to be very proficient at this craft within months.I highly recommend this video to anyone interested in learning the art of crochet without frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Having Your Own Private Crocheting Lessons!
Although I was not thrilled about paying such a steep price for one video when I first dared to purchase thise tape. I was hopeful due to the rave reviews that it would be money well spent. I am THRILLED to tell all reading this that it was a wise investment afterall! This instructor on the video is soft spoken and study in her speech and the camera zooms in well and study for clear view of her finger movements, etc., so it is really like having private lessons in crocheting from your own home teacher! :) Hope the price will come down soon so I can afford to buy several more copies for family & friends as well. ... Childbirth educator Sherry Turney is a cheerful and knowledgeable guide to the complex--and sometimes intimidating--world of labor and birth. In this four-hour tape, she teaches her two-day course to an actual class, covering signs and stages of labor, exercise and breathing during labor, and hospital procedures for vaginal and cesarean deliveries. She uses a variety of helpful props--including charts, fetal and pelvic models, and often, herself--to demonstrate the various aspects of childbirth. As a Read more

This video was AWESOME!! Sherry Turney the instructor is so down to earth and real that you feel like you know her!I learned so much and I feel like she presented all of the material in a way that was really open and not intimidating or scary.I HIGHLY recommend this video.I wish Sherry lived close to me because I would love her to help my husband and I on our big day. This video is a must see for first time moms!

4-0 out of 5 stars After seeing all that's out there:
Due to timing problems I was unable to attend regular childbirth classes. I bought and watched every Childbirth class I could find. Labor of love, although not the most popular, was the most informative. This was esspecially true for my coach! The massage techniques were wonderful (Add some cocoa butter and make the touches -firm-) I would have never gotten through without them. Unlike alot of the films out their, Sherry (I admit she -does- have an annoying voice) gets down on the floor and shows you what shes talking about...she dosen't use those pelvis models alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars National Geo Really Wild Animals: Amazing North America
We own all of the tapes in this series and think that this and Swinging Safari are the two best. The photography is great, the music is wonderful, and Dudley Moore's narration is perfect.Great for kids of all ages and adults as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Amazing America
This film has amazing footage and is perfect for animal lovers. The best part is the "Meet the Beavers" where beavers prepare for winter. The songs are good, too. I have seen all the videos in the series and thought they were all great, but this is fantastic!

4-0 out of 5 stars North America is amazing!
I love animals. And I own all the "Really Wild Animals" videos! I own all of them (except "Totally Tropical Rainforest"). This is my third favorite out of the series. I love the idea of Spin scratching North America, when he needs to think, the idea of them switching seasons throughout the video is interesting, and the songs are very catchy, too. 1-0 out of 5 stars Hunt for a Better Video!
I am always a little suspicious when I pop a new video in the VCR and it doesn't track correctly.I was also wondering why it appeared there was only a few feet of tape wound in the cassette. The reason? This video is recorded in "extended play"! Yup, you pay good money and receive an extremely poor-quality tape. But that's just the physical side of things. The content is even worse. This production can be considered nothing less than a complete joke. Although some knowledge about hunting whitetail deer is provided (nothing beyond the very basics), the majority of the tape is a poorly-acted self-narrative of a couple guys out in the field supposedly hunting whitetail deer. There is one scene of an actual kill, but the script, photography, and hype of the entire tape are so cheesy as to be laughable. As a matter of fact, I would be laughing right now, except for the fact I paid $... plus shipping to receive this ridiculous piece of garbage. One example: the last ten minutes of the tape is wasted by a phony self-narrative of one of the hunters supposedly stalking a certain buck he says he has been trying to nail for years. After 10 minutes of plastic lip-service and fake stalking, the hunter finally gets the deer in his scope - and lets him go! That's right - no shot. Why? Probably because it is all fake.Except for the 10-second clip of a whitetail actually getting shot and beginning to fall, I believe all the video of deer is just that - video of deer out in the field (not being hunted). I believe all of the so-called "hunting" was fake play-acting for the benefit of the camera. My recommendation? Hunt for a better video. I would offer mine for sale, but I wouldn't feel right about collecting money for something that is a complete waste of time and energy. ... Read more

This is a favorite DVD in our house. It has stunning camera work, wonderful information and an excellent narrative. It portrays the glory of Ancient Egypt and the pride modern Egyptians still feel towards their heritage.
3-0 out of 5 stars Bit Disappointed - Hardly any "Mysteries of Egypt" to see
This was an excellent documentary on Egypt, with stunning footages and photography. But if you are looking for real Mysteries of Egypt and the investigative report on them, this surely is not the video you shall look for. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Japan!
Recently, I showed this video to my 6th grade world cultures students and they were really captivated by it.I wasn't sure how they would like it, but they loved seeing the crafts and various artists of Japan. The video is great, because it gives you short pictures of different important people and a real overview of all of Japan's amazing talent. My students particularly liked the fighting puppets.5-0 out of 5 stars This viedo is a beatifully filmed informative documentary.
I saw this beatifully filmed piece on PBS. It selects several artists, ranging from weavers to dancers to sword makers, who have been designated by the Japanese government as "Living Treasures." Thisdocumentary describes the artistic tradition each Treasure practices, showing the traditions of some of Japan's near-lost arts. The informationpresented includes how the art is practiced, the traditions behind it, andsome minutes of comment or interview from the Treasurers themselves. Iwould recommend this video to anyone who is interested in arts, history andtradition, or Japanese culture. There is actually a lot of information andinsipration in this program. This video has an overall quiet, peaceful andrelaxed feel, gently walking us through the lives and traditions of theTreasurers. I think it would be a wonderful generation-bridge for parentsand children to watch together. ... Read more
