4-0 out of 5 stars Good One
I'd have bought this video just for the solos Wynton plays on it.They're more than worth the cost of the tape. The history of the development of early jazz is good stuff, too, though. It's all done through musicalexamples and is just as good for kids as it is for practicing musicians. Worth your dollar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for train enthusiasts!
This video is a must for train buffs! It has everything a trainenthusiast wants in a video:solid information coupled with stunningfootage of some of the most interesting train runs in the world, as well asclips from "the good old days" of railroading. The videoprovides a good historical perspective of railroading and the advent ofsteam engines, moving along briskly to bring the viewer up to modern times.Because it was produced in the early 80's, some of the material may be alittle dated, but a true rail fan won't be bothered by this aspect.Thevideo is produced in the classic informative and easy-to-watch style whichis the hallmark of National Geographic Videos. If you love trains, youwon't be disappointed. ... Editorial Review

"Vesuvius slumbers, but his heart is still awake," wrote one scientist about southern Italy's Mount Vesuvius. Active for more than 17,000 years, Vesuvius wiped out two nearby towns in A.D. 79, with a blast 10 times greater than Mount St. Helens's 1980 eruption. Pompeii and Herculaneum were lost beneath gravel and ash until relatively recently. Now archaeologists consider Pompeii the largest preserved site of the ancient world. In this hour-long program, originally released in 1987, much is methodically explored. In Herculaneum a baby's cradle, delicate hand-blown glass, and a lunchtime meal are all intact. How did ancient Romans live and how did Vesuvius kill them? Viewers will learn all this and more about the last moments of life near Europe's most active volcano. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and Informative
Actor Robert Foxworth narrates this National Geographic film on Mount Vesuvius which has erupted some 50 times since it's major eruption in 79 AD that destroyed two Roman cities and also threatens modern people who live around the volcano today, despite modern science efforts to study and learn how the volcano erupts and the warning signs to look for when a major eruption is near.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great video for entire family
This is one of my family's favorite videos. Kids as young as 5 are engrossed in the footage of Vesuvius and the remains of the city of Pompeii. My son's first grade teacher has requested this video to sharewith all the first graders in their study of Ancieng Greece & Rome

4-0 out of 5 stars Great educational film for potential tourists/history buffs
I'm in the US Navy, currently stationed in Naples, Italy. This video is one of the many high quality National Geographic films. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great tape for Beginners
This is a great tape for beginners. It shows you all the basic steps needed to start dancing socially. The steps are timeless even though the tape is a little dated. If you practice each segment on the tape you should feel comfortable enough to get started dancing in public- and that's the key to enjoying dancing. The first time you get on a dance floor you will want to show off your new talents. Buy the tape and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instruction vs. Inspiration
Clear instructions, but with a very "1950's feel".Everything appears very dated, not making one anxious to learn the steps and get out there and have fun.But the movements are well explained and shown clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to-dance tape
Margot Scholz clearly tells us how to dance. She shows the steps slowly at first and then faster with a partner. She covers the basics of form, posture, and leading in addition to the foot movements. She picks good rhythms that are easy to dance to.It is the best tape we found and my partner and I tried a good half dozen.Margot is the best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Nye the Science Guy series should be on DVD!
I homeschool my 10 yr old, 8 yr old, 6 yr old, 5 yr old, and 4 yr old; all sit attentively and soak up the Bill Nye the Science Guy shows. I highly recommend all Bill Nye shows to supplement teaching science. My only disappointment with the series is that it isn't on DVD! not even on Blockbuster or Netflix.
5-0 out of 5 stars No interest in science is required!
Momentum... Who knew?! I finally get it! My son gets it! We all got it and it was fun. Bill Nye delivers science using a series of vignettes that illustrate, demonstrate, reenact, spoof, and reinforce without hitting those boring notes we've come to expect from science. I've never been disappointed by a Bill Nye show or video, and this video is no exception.

My family loves this tape so much, it was actually worn out. The picture kept getting worse, so I felt it was time to buy a new one. We've bought several of the "Really Wild Animals" videos and found them to be very educational (and Dudley Moore is always funny to listen to), but the "Deep Sea Dive" is definitely a hit in my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tesla likes Airplanes
My little bro ther tesla loves planes and always watchs this and sometimes i do!

4-0 out of 5 stars 90 percent good
Except for the scary parts, like when Dave has to fly the biplane, or the screaming when he loses control over the jet...! my 3-year old loves it, as well as bulldozer and above all helicopter (5 stars). He hates the train video, can't stand when Dave wears the conductor uniform or spills food all over the passengers. There are a few seconds of scary parts in each video: in garbage truck Dave is seen head stuck down in the garbage; in tow truck he smashes up a car trying to get it attached to the tow. It's neccessary to be around when the video is on. Why he likes the explosions in bulldozer is beyond me! But overall, a positive series. I buy them as cheaply as possible though...

4-0 out of 5 stars goofy fun for kids (and adults) interested in airplanes
Dave Hood's series "There Goes a .... " are informative and entertaining.Personally I think this is the weakest of the ones we've seen, but our three-year old loves it.I think too much time is wasted on trivia and it'spainful to watch the airline attendant tell us how she greets passengers and shows us where the stirring sticks are located, but try to tell that to your kid!Pilot Dave rides in a stunt plane, a passenger jet, an aircraft carrier and a jumbo UPS carrier, among others, and lots of fun is had by all. ... Engineer Dave shows us around old and new trains, takes control of a freight train going top speed, and introduces us to steam engines, locomotives, and an old caboose. Plenty to see, lots of location shooting, big action for tykes interested in moving machines. Dave's banter might go over the heads of some of the target audience, but you can ignore that. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
This is great. My train lover three year old loves it. It is funny and yet it is educational. They even throw in the train safety comments about staying off of tracks and so on. I particularly like that they show women and men and people of all ethnicities doing a good job. These are normal people who are proud of their work. The humor is slapstick that young kids can relate to and enjoy. This video appeals to a wide range of ages and is something that parents can enjoy.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Train
Our daughter likes the truck one better...so far we are pleased with this series. Dave is always silly and a good educator for kids...his silliness is probably why they learn!!!

Who hasn't had the dream of being a tap dancer? Bonnie Franklin, formerly with Donald O'Connor and a tap dancer since the age of 9, makes your dream come true--at least in your living room. Franklin is a warm, motivating and skillful teacher, and she obviously loves tap dancing. The former TV sitcom star leads you through your first steps, appropriate for the two-left-feet among us. Later sections get progressively more complex. Learn a basic tap step, then another, practice and practice, and put them together. Before long, you're dancing complete routines. The video runs 86 minutes, but Franklin suggests you stop and practice a section until you're proficient rather than trying to get through it all at once.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love to Dance!Great DVD!
I have been taking tap for a few years. This is perfect for beginners if you need the basics, she will teach you starting with the most basic steps. If you know how to tap dance move ahead to the routines. There are three great routines. You can do one or all three. She breaks each part down and explains it well.I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to dance.A great way to practice at home!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!
This video is EVERYTHING I expected and MORE!Bonnie really is clear with her instructions and does a great job of helping you understand what you are doing.Through the routines, you enjoy yourself, you learn, you sweat and you pant, because she really does give you a good, healthy, cardio workout.I would suggest that anyone just starting out go at a slower pace.Don't try to do the video all at once, especially if you have health issues.Learn where your limits are and go further as you develop your stamina. This video is definitely worth the money! You would pay many times the price to learn the same thing in a studio.Plus, you have the ability to practice at home, every day.No gasoline prices, weather extremes, heavy traffic, or schedules to deal with.Practice when your lifestyle permits.Taking classes along with this video would be beneficial, but during spells when no studio classes are available, this video will definitely get you through the season! If your goal is to lose weight, stick with a regular routine of this workout and watch your diet (just because you want to eat healthier) and you *should* be able to lose weight and have fun at the same time!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Dance How-To Out There
I wish she would put out more like this, it is superior.I have dozens of dance/exercise videos (bellydance, tap, hip-hop, etc.)The instructional format and Bonnie's teaching are exceptional - better than any other.First she shows you what each of three routines look like.Next she teaches each routine. Her instructions are clear and perfectly paced. Then she runs through the routine with you at a moderate tempo (this is the tempo I usually use to practice).Last, she performs each routine again up to speed. You come away with three great and basic tap dance routines that I am still practicing years after I learned them.I can't say this about any other tape/dvd I have. The routines progress in difficulty; the time step is exhausting and a great workout, even for dancers with some experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
Our kid'a love it! Mr Wynton Marsalis is the bomb! Our middle school just isn't teaching this, and as the only really original music from the USA I feel jazz is pretty important! You won't be sorry! In fact the whole family will enjoy this fine box set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis On Music is an instant classic.
Marsalis on Music is the young people's series for our time, hosted by Wynton Marsalis, the most popular and acclaimed jazz musician of his generation anddistinguished classical performer as well.Withhelp from his jazz band and students from the Tanglewood Music Center, led by Seiji Ozawa, Wynton puts a fresh spin on music appreciation. His inspired instruction, backed by superb performances and exciting animated graphics, not only teaches the fundamentals of music, but makes learning fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis on Music, from a music teacher's perspective
This video series is certainly not a substitute for a sound music education, and does not promote itself as such.It focuses on the elementsof jazz and jazz theory, a component that is lacking or inadequate in mostof the popular music curriculums for the elementary and junior high school. I like this particular series for several reasons. First, it is somethingI would leave a substitute teacher because the students can watch it andthere is plenty of room for discussion and practice later on.Second,as asuccessful African-American musician, he is a good role model for youngmusicians. I work with at-risk students, and have found that it isimportant to present them with some positive, successful role models thatare culturally diverse. Finally, the presentation is attention grabbing.Marsalis has a way of communicating clearly in this series. He explainsmusical concepts from the simplest to some that are fairly complex in a waythat is direct. There is a lot of basic music theory embedded in thisseries. Plus, it's more fun than lecturing, and kids seem to enjoy it as achange of pace. It's not a substitute for good teaching, but it cansupplement and round out a good music education program. ... Upon the African continent lies Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, themiddle of an extinct volcano with conditions so optimal for animal life that there are 20,000 beasts crowded into it. But the very conditions that allow the animal population in general to thrive also make it difficult for theindividual to survive. This drama is played out time and again in this55-minute video, as viewers watch a nervy lioness enter a hippo enclave tomake a meal of one of their dead or as hyenas attack and kill a cub from arival family. Newborn wildebeest are up on their feet within minutes ofbirth, running within the half-hour, and yet one in four will perish.Photographers capture images of the Masai who (legally) bring their herdsinto the protected area for water with apparently little effect. Juxtaposed are images of picnicking tourists on the canyon rim laughing as aggressivebirds steal their sandwiches. The documentarians don't hesitate to indict the visitors and the 100 vehicles a day they bring to the canyon rim forthreatening the isolation of this unusual place and its wild way oflife. Read more

This one hour video provides a good overview of the inhabitants of the African plains ecology by focusing on a relatively small region with a fairly dense wildlife population, the Ngorongoro crater. As explained in the video, this crater, ten miles across, supports permanent populations of many species by virtue of its year round water supply.3-0 out of 5 stars Not out of the ordinary

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful trip from home
Tasha Tudor claims that her "whole life has been a vacation". Watching this video is like taking a trip with her to a different place and time and coming back with a renewed spirit. While I also enjoy "Take Peace" - especially during the Christmas holiday season -"Take Joy" is a wonder for it's aesthetic qualities and insight into the private life of a noted illlustrator as well as a valuable reference tool for the gardener. It mirrors the same tone set in the three "coffee table" books about Tasha Tudor done by Tovah Martin, Richard W. Brown, and Tasha Tudor. This short video is artistically crafted, giving the viewer a glimpse into her private life: her kitchen, her gardens, her dollhouse and marionettes, her books and illustrations, her family history through photographs and some vintage film clips, her sense of humor, her steadfastness and her self-sufficiency.5-0 out of 5 stars Tasha - True Artist, True Child
If you need to be refreshed, this is the video for you.Tasha Tudor is child inside artist and she succeeds in introducing a charming world to the viewer. Her garden, her art, her life philosophy is fresh and reminds us all what life is made of.It really refreshs the spirit.Oh that we all were as young and new as Ms.Tudor.If you want to give a really great gift, give this video.Itis true gold.

Basic Dance was one of my first introductory videos into the art of Belly Dance. It was the most helpful and continues to be. First I used it to learn bellydance. Then I still used it to practice, and now I'm using the choreography for my school's diversity night! The rich Egyptian style music never gets boring and gives you a taste of the MiddleEast. Veena and Neena have an easy and sensual approach to teaching the bellydance moves that'll transform you into the Goddess that you are! It's fun, low-impact but effective, sensual, liberating, and a true artform! If you're interested in Bellydane than trust me this video is the BEST start you could find. All their other videos are also fantastic too! Also, this video's great if you're an instructor looking for a choreography to teach your beginner students! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary on Coastal Killer Whale Behavior
This video is an excellent documentary that covers a variety of killer whale populations in various coastal environs around the world. Here you'll see killer whales who individually chase salmon off the coast of the Pacific northwest, and others who join into larger groups to use cooperative techniques for catching herring off the coast of Norway; in the southern hemisphere, you'll see groups that hunt for elephant seal on island beaches in the southern Indian ocean, and others that use similar techniques to catch sea lions on the beaches of Argentina. In between the hunting scenes, there is footage of these whales enjoying social interaction or pebble massages, along with brief discussions from various scientists that study these intriguing creatures.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary
This is a brilliant documentary capturing the breath-taking killer whales in all its glory. The whale's hunt for salmon and seals around the world is captured by awesome cinematography. Furthermore, the film goes into detail discussing thw whale's social grouping and its intelligence. In short, this is a must-have for killer whale lovers and anyone else interested in nature.

Editorial Review

For all of us who get discouraged from time to time (and who hasn't?)--especially feeling out of control and frustrated with yo-yo dieting--America's No. 1 inspirational speaker, Oprah Winfrey, provides real hope. Winfrey, so adept at making emotional connections with others on her talk show, turns that spotlight squarely on herself in an emotional and revealing hour. Despite her incredible success, she says, for years she was deeply unhappy. But in May of 1992 she finally reached the decision that helped her move forward in clarity. As she says, "I've learned that time is the one thing you cannot waste.... I hope that somebody will see this and connect in a way that will save them time." Oprah's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures The True Spirit of Bellydance
A friend recommended this to me as the best instructional video to really learn bellydance and she was right.Atea's Magical Motion is unique compared to other bellydance videos I own and have tried. The video starts with a brief, informative history of bellydance, which reveals a few facts that I know I wasn't aware of, including its health benefits.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction, not workout video...
I really got into belly dance workouts about 6 years ago and purchased this video at that time.I remember hating it and thinking that it was the most worthless video I'd seen. After falling off the belly dance wagon, I now lead a group of women who are learning to belly dance using instructional videos. In going through my collection I revisted this video and realised that it would have made a great introduction to the world of belly dance.I plan on teaching a new group next year and will use this video the first night for those who are interested in the history and basic moves.I am so glad that I gave this video another chance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bellydance! Magical Motion
This video was pretty good! She is a bit stiff and is constantly looking at the cue cards, not the camera, but she's there to teach the moves not act! For beginners I would say it's good except you can't see the legs or feet to well. But overall it is a pretty good video and I would reccommend it solely for the knowledge of the basic moves in Bellydance! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I watched it several times in the few days since it arrived. This video gives a real picture of what life in the Alaskan bush can be like.Although there's not an abundance of formal teaching, it's very informative seeing how these bush families live, eat, hunt, get supplies, and get along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going beyond the movie...
This movie so touched my life that I was often left wondering what became of these people. Well, now I know. There is a book called "The Final Frontiersman" by James Campbell. He is a cousin of Heimo Korth and wrote the book in 2002 and had it published in 2004. This book is a must for anyone who loved this movie and wondered what ever happed to these people. You would be surprised to hear what they are up to now.
5-0 out of 5 stars BravingAlaska
Braving Alaska is a must for anyone who loves the great out doors; my wife and I loved this movie so much that we watched it over a dozen times if not more.My wife and I fish, Hunt, Camp, Explore and more and this movie was great to watch. It shows how people can survive in the wilderness and live off the land and not abuse it.If you are an out doors person or just love the great out doors I highly recommend this great adventure video.I wish they would make a second part to this video. God Bless America. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Baby Einstein started its "video board books" in 1997, the company was virtually alone in the field of baby development. By its sixth video, the field has become crowded with similar-sounding titles. Now scientists might be able to analyze what a baby will get out of a video like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars our little girl's new favorite
Last month we bought Baby Einstein - Baby MacDonald - A Day on the Farm. It became our daughters favorite, passing Baby Mozart. Our girl seems to like the puppets most of all, but she also likes the video of the real animals. Neighborhood Animals has an abundance of puppets and animal footage. If your child likes the puppets, then this is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO REGRETS
I wrote a review when my daughter (who is now almost 17 months old) was 6 months old explaing how Baby Mozart DVD was the best and her favorite. . .that has since changed. Now, her favorite is Neighborhood Animals. She was given as a gift, the book by baby einstein neighborhood animals and she enjoyed it so much, I think because she recognized so many of the creatures in the book, that I decided to buy the dvd.I had already seen success with Baby Mozart and Beethoven so I did it.She LOVES it and it is the only once she has watched since I purchased it.Whenever I turn the DVD player on she gets excited and squeals and runs to her chair. While watching it, I can hear her saying, "dog", "kitty", "bunny", "duck", "bird", etc. . . I'll admit that the images on some of the Baby Einstein videos are a bit odd and random to say the least but this one is one of the better ones in that area.I highly recommend this. . i have NO REGRETS

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully done
Yes, I agree with the "not just jaws" reviewer. This is a very engaging and informative documentary. I can't believe I just said"engaging" concerning the subject of sharks, but that was whatcame for me from the patience and care of the film maker as he tried toshow us a much more multi-dimensional view of these animals in theirnatural environment, simply going about their lives. They really arebeautiful and complex animals, some of which are formidable hunters to besure, but, of course, as he helps to remind us, none of which are monstersto be unduly feared or pigeon-holed. (Another nice companion piece beyondthe NG "Sharks" video the other reviewer mentioned is the onereleased this year (2000) on great whites, which includes Peter Benchleyresearching a new take on the animal now that 25 years has passed since*Jaws* was first released, as well as the trevails of a long-time oceanphotographer trying to gain new and truly defining shots of the animal, this film also a National Geographic piece.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just Jaws
A very entertaining look at a wide range of sharks, showing how varied in size, shape and habit they can be.While not discounting the fact that some sharks can be dangerous in some circumstances, this is a much moreinteresting presentation than the usual "eating machine" viewusually presented in most documentaries. Lots of beautiful footage, narrated by the film maker, who has a marine biology background. Anexcellent companion to the earlier (also National Geo) "TheSharks" -- get both if you can find them. ...
