4-0 out of 5 stars Gives a good understanding of the tragedy and the events leading up to it.
The Jonestown tragedy had previously been made into the exploitation film "Guyana - Crime of the Century". However, this TV production, with a running time of about three hours gives a betterunderstanding of how it could happen. The story starts when Jim Jones is a child, being indoctrinated by a Christian fundamentalist friend. He starts the integrated People's Temple Church after discovering how racist the established churches in San Francisco are. He really wants to do something good for the community and he does, but power corrupts and the church turns into more of a money making cult and Jones turns into a cruel leader. His drug use and paranoia doesn't make things better. After moving to Guyana, Jones has complete control over his folloers, and with him as a leader, Jonestown is headed for destruction.
5-0 out of 5 stars Before Waco,Before Heaven's Gate.
Jim Jones,A crazy preacher brainwashes his People's Temple cult to move from Illinios,I think to Jonestown.Africa, where they are forced to drink a Kool-Aid laced with syinide. Jim Jones himself had jungle fever,so he was dying anyway. Some of the People's temple did get away. The People's Temple did call Jim Jones"DAD"

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but highly inaccurate
Powers Boothe, while obviously talented and provided a strong character, he did not capture the real Jim Jones in any sense. This movie is so full of inaccuracies that it is not worth viewing to obtain any true information regarding the Peoples Temple movement. I would recommend some of the documentaries such as Purple Haze or the A & E Biography of Jim Jones-Journey into Madness.I found this motion picture misleading and almost total fiction as I know many, many family members and survivors of Peoples Temple and have written/researched Peoples Temple extensively. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Imitation of Laff
A lot of people love this movie and so do I--but probably not for the same reason. Not for nothing was this the last gasp of the Ross Hunter tearjerkers in the "Imitation of Life"/"Back Street" mode. By the mid-Sixties, this type of hokum was far more comic than melodramatic--just look at the ridiculous casting, which includes a 40-something Lana Turner (who'd just played Sandra Dee's mother/stepmother in her last few pictures) as a young bride. . . having her first child! Surrounding her with inappropriate actors like bland John Forstyhe (as her middle-aged ambitious "young" husband) and veteran Constance Bennett (who somehow looks more like Lana's younger sister than her mother-in-law) didn't help realism. Cheesy production values and anacronisms (all the women are dressed in the height of Sixties middlebrow fashions--in scenes taking place thirty years earlier!) just add to the fun. A real howl, especially when an Oscar-hungry Turner goes to pot in the final reels. You'll cry alright--with laughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greats!
If you're looking for a rainy afternoon or late night tearjerker, bursting at the seams with impeccable style, glamour and delicious disaster, this is your film. Only Lana Turner can deliver such wistful heartbreak in the finest gowns and jewels one instant, and next be the tragic victim of misfortune, suffering as only those who fall from on high can know.To call it melodrama would be an insult, this is classic cinema, with Hollywood royalty.

5-0 out of 5 stars gary cole shines as custer in t.v. 's version of "dances with wolves"
gary cole as custer, rodney a grant as crazy horse, and roseanna arquette as libby custer make this t.v.mini series shine and one of the best tellings of the life of custer ever put on film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, but how much longer for the DVD?
Despite being a made for TV flick, this is my fav Little Big Horn movie.I don't know why it takes what feels like forever to reprint VHS versions to DVD whith all the high-tech out there, but like Zulu Dawn, another of my favorite war flicks, it seems that the conversion of celluloid to digital is as slow as molasses in January (that's January in Norther Virginia, and baby, it get's cold here!).I found the acting of all the characters excellent, the storyline, wonderful, the action super, and the perspective from both sides, the red man and the white man, excellent, and the atmosphere convincing, although there is not much grit to the era in the movie.Just stop farting around and get me a DVD version and make me a very happy fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars "son of the morning star" is a true epic
this is t.v.'s take at the boxoffic and oscar power of "dances with wolves" and it is really the best thing t.v. has done next to "lonesome dove". gary cole is just perfect as the bold, ego manic, loving husband, and a commanding officer no one would want. rodney grant of "dances with wolves" is also great as crazy horse and the battle is the center piece of this fine look at the little big horn from both sides and really brings home the sadness of what followed for both sides. this belongs on dvd, i hope it is soon. but if a tape is what it takes to see this movie then buy it you will love it ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Admirable Walk into the American Past
Actual research on the now-raised Hunley and its crew suggests some of the information in this historical drama may be incorrect, but its spirit is not flawed. It shows well the diverse personalities that would come together in one of the landmark projects of Naval warfare in one of the great desperate attempts to turn the tide of the American Civil War toward southern Independence.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well made film, but where can I get a DVD???
I've seen the film on German television recently - with german dubbed actors. Sounded a bit odd but otherwise the movie was very well made and quite authentic, I found. I browsed every Amazon in Europe and in the United States - but no DVD. US-NTSC Format VHS-Videos don't work in Europe. We've got 220 V/50 Hz, remember that, when selling to an important market in Europe - that is good ol' Deutschland!! When can I reckon with a european compatible Video or a DVD? (Not in years, please...)Thank you for your kind consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars "jaws" on the western plains
this is another of charles bronson's 70's westerns that tried to do something different, and it works if you let it. blasted by everyone when it came out it really is a good take on "jaws" and "moby dick" in the west. bronson is wild bill hickock, slowly being eatten away by the clap, and having visions of the white buffalo of the title and it's coming for him so he starts looking for it. will sampson is crazy horse who must kill the beast to help his daughter(killed by the anamial)to get to heaven. this has some great scenery and some fine action scenes,so if you like bronson or westerns that have a little food for thought check this one out.

Editorial Review

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Read more

My daughters have grown up watching this video, sometimes every day!Grandma said that if she never had to watch it again it would be fine with her...guess we overdid it.When I hear the music of the competitions I stop what I'm doing to watch that part again.Truly a classic and family favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disperse Ye Rebels!Disperse!!
This is a decent film that deserves to be re-issued on DVD.While not a big budget opus like infamous Mel Gibson's THE PATRIOT, this is a much higher quality film overall. While a bit slow in the beginning with family relationships in Lexington, the film picks up when the British at last appear on the screen! There is a nice shot of the British columm deploying impressively into line to face Captain Parker's company. The only problem here is that the British force at this point consisited of six companies of Light Infantry who jogged into town at a fast clip before forming line opposite the militia. This would have been less impressive to show, plus i guess the available re-enactors could not all be shown in Light Infantry garb.So we get the usual mix of line companies, Grenadiers and Lights all in group together!Colorful, but not accurate!
4-0 out of 5 stars Lexington in April 1775
This film is set in 1775 Colonial Massachusetts. A peddler is stopped and searched, the British troops find a musket, powder, balls and confiscate them and the wagon (Gun Control!). The peddler stops at a local tavern to tell about this. The people have noticed an increase in British troop patrols. We then meet a family and see a portrayal of life in the 18th century as similar to today. There is a meeting among the men, they discuss the relative military strengths of the Colonial militia to the 5,000 British troops in Boston. [In fact the militia had a long military experience in colonial warfare, the British were less experienced.]
3-0 out of 5 stars Not very impressed

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Television Event, but a slight notch down from Seasons 1 and 2
By the time "The Sopranos" entered its third season, it had solidified its standing as a "weekly event".There aren't many television shows in the 50+ years of television history that can be put into this category.A "weekly event" show basically has everyone talking about the episode the next day. In the 1980s, shows such as "Dallas" and "Dynasty" were "weekly events".In the 1990s, "Seinfeld" would take emerge as the show that would become a "weekly event".As Seinfeld wound up, another show would soon take that title into the 21st century - that show being HBO's "The Sopranos".The first two seasons of the show not only established a show of high entertainment value, but a show that also was of high quality.Season 3,"The Sopranos - The Complete Third Season" does have some very good episodes, it does take a slight notch down from the first two years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome series, awesome season!!
This is the season w/ the episode where Paulie & Christopher are lost in the wilderness!!!!Don't eat the berries!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sopranos: Season Three
The third season of "The Sopranos" continued on with its splendid storytelling, brilliant acting, and top-notch directing. Season three had at least one new challenge for writer/creator David Chase: dealing with the character of Tony's evil mother Livia. Chase originally had Livia written into the first several episodes of season three. Then Nancy Marchand, the actress who played Livia, died of lung cancer in June 2000. "The Sopranos" lost a dear member of the family, and Chase had to go back and re-write those episodes. In the second episode of season three (titled "Proshai, Livushka"), Marchand made a cameo appearence as Livia with the help of previous existing footage and special effects. Then she dies, and the entire Soprano clan come together for her funeral. This is a good episode, even though the scene where Livia comes in for one last moment looks awkward. But Chase wanted to give Marchand and her character a fitting tribute to one of their own. "The Sopranos" also lost another regular cast member: Vincent Pastore, who played Tony's dear friend Pussy (and got whacked at the end of season two). Season three introduced a couple of new characters. Joe Pantoliano came on to portray unstable mobster Ralph Cifaretto; Annabella Sciorra guest starred in the latter episodes of season three as Gloria Trillo, a car saleswoman who Tony starts having an affair with; and Jason Carbone as Jackie Aprile Jr., son of the late mob boss Jackie Aprile Sr., who was always getting in trouble, which constantly aggravated Tony. Season three of "The Sopranos" featured some very strong episodes, including the fourth episode ("Employee of the Month"). This is the episode in which Tony's shrink Dr. Melfi gets raped, and features the best acting that Lorraine Bracco has done on the show. But probably the most talked about episode from season three without a doubt has got to be the eleventh, "Pine Barrens". To this day I still keep hearing people talk about this episode, in which two of Tony's wiseguys (Christopher and Paulie) get lost in the woods after unsuccessfully trying to whack a Russian mobster. This is a great episode, and is worth seeing just to watch the great acting by Michael Imperioli (Christopher) and Tony Sirico (Paulie). The third season of "The Sopranos" received 22 Emmy nominations, and won James Gandolfini and Edie Falco their second Emmys for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. It also won an Emmy for the second time in the writing category for the episode "Employee of the Month".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Godfather...Goes To A Shrink...
The Sopranos is a great show, with a captivating storyline: mob boss Tony Sopranos has panic attacks so he starts going to a psychotherapist. As the show progresses, Tony rises in the ranks and manages to kill and FBI witness and try to kill his mother. Season one is a great but it only lays down the foundation for the following 6 seasons, If you like season one, then you'll love seasons 2-6. Just imaging the Godather going to a shrink... only better.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are Tony Soprano
If, like me, you are a male over thirty with kids and your own business that sometimes drags but puts food on the table, then you are Tony Soprano. OK you might not shoot dead those that cross you, nor own a strip club, but the essence is the same - "we are soldiers". We try to the right thing by our kids and spouses and employees and associates, but sometimes we are left holding a whisky glass at 1 in the morning thinking "what is this all for?". Just like Tony. Boom. That's why this series will hit you like no other.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sopranos- The Complete Second Season
The second season is my favorite season even though I kind of saw it out of order but not the first disc, the first disc was the first episodes I ever saw.second season dvd's have a cool menu. And the second season has the best stories.Lillo Brancato Jr. from A Bronx Tale is in the second season so thats good I was glad to see him in there. This is the only season I want to own.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump
Although it takes about half the season to really get going, the fans are right: The Sopranos' second year was a definite step forward for the series. In the transition from season one, a number of key changes took place, and nearly all of them bolstered the narrative appeal.First of all, with Junior behind bars, Tony is made de-facto capo, and we see not only the power but also the many pressures attached to his new position.Second, in the fallout from season one's climax, Tony places severe limits, understandably enough, on contact with his ailing mother Livia, whose presence many viewers were finding a shade too overbearing. Finally, the show probes deeper into social realism, examining the disintegrating codes and values of the contemporary mob in the season's main story arc, which hinges on uncovering the rat in Tony's crew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning...
Alan Rickman continues to amaze me with the diversity and depth he brings to every role he plays. His Rasputin just leapt out at you, even in moments when he was being serious & contemplative. He so richly deserved all the accolades that were awarded to him for his performance. He played so many facets, there were times you wanted to strangle him, and other times when you felt completely sympathetic to him, and wondered if he truly was a Holy Man who just became a pawn in the power struggle of the time. I also have to give kudos to both Greta Scacchi & Ian McKellen for their performances as the doomed Tsar & Tsarina, bursting with hope and happiness as Alexei is "cured", and falling into the pit of despair as their world crumbles around them. An amazing movie, period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Film
This film deservese 5 stars for someone daring to pick up where the 1991 discovery had left off.I see some people criticizing the film and they are entitled that right, but this film was beautifully done. The acting was superb, locations were grand, and the portrayal of life in Russia (such as the authentic Orthodox Priest) was extraordinary.5 Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Astonishing portrayal!
Though not the greatest film of all time, Rickman's astonishingly complex portrayal of the enchanted monk is among the great male roles of all cinema, comparable to Giannini's breathtaking "Seven Beauties". This is a must for any student of acting.(...) ... Read more

This well-conceived made-for-television Disney movie brings the pain and difficulty ofdesegregation to life for a generation of kids to whom the 1960s is ancient history. Young Chaz Monet plays Ruby, who in real life walked up thoseSouthern school steps with armed guards barely shielding her from thehate-filled epithets white adults hurled at her as she single-handedlydesegregated the institution. Penelope Ann Miller plays her Yankeeteacher--actually a tutor, since no white kids will share her classroom. KevinPollak plays the psychiatrist who donates his time to help her deal with thetrauma, but won't eat her mother's food. This 89-minute film offerssurprisingly complex portraits of many of the adult characters and anadmirably frank look at the less-than-positive reaction from her owncommunity. Even her father (Michael Beach) waivers in resolution, especiallywhen his white boss fires him. Superior acting, writing, and production mark this look at one of the uglier periods in American social history and the little girl who helped the country take a giant step in the right direction.Somewhat scary situations and use of racial slurs make parental guidanceadvisable for young children. This movie is such an important part of our multi-cultural history that must be shared! This brave little girl has a greater faith and more forgiving spirit than can be imagined. She is an example of how God's loves works. This is a movie that I will watch at least 2 or 3 times a year to remind me that no matter the circumstances are, faith and love can overcome anything!

Great Movie to show ages 8+. Strong topic was presented in a kid friendly format. Its Disney, so all dialogue was appropriate. Movie watchers get the harshness of segregation without the true hatred of segregation.

As a high school science teacher I deal with common myths and misconceptions involving evolution on a daily basis. This movie does a nice job of helping kids understand the passion of the issue.Evolution is the cornerstone of modern day biology and it is important kids understand why it needs to be taught. The amazing thing about science is that if evidence comes along to disprove a current school of thought, the discipline may change. When religion is questioned the only response is to lash out with hostility and anger. Why can't we question the way Man believes in God?

5-0 out of 5 stars Inherit the Wind (1999)
A truly excellent remake of an American classic.Once you get past any inital reservations you may (understandably) have about the film'smade-for-cable origins, you will find a work that is, in my opinion, justas engaging as the 1960 version. Two gripes: 1.As mentioned by anotherreviewer, the direction and camera work is a bit static and elementary. 2.As also mentioned by another reviewer, Beau Bridges at times is tooobnixious and over the top.On the other hand, Jack Lemmon and GeorgeC. Scott (in his final performace) are absolutely riveting.Piper Laurieis also very compelling as Scott's sympathetic and diplomatic wife. This incarnation of the film is extremely faithful to its predecessor, virtually a frame by frame re-shoot. Yet the dialouge, performaces andsubject matter are just as fresh and stirring as they were 40 years ago.Fans of the 1960 release should certainly enjoy, or at least appreciatethis latest adaption. ... Editorial Review

This dramatization of the tangled history of Apple Computer and Microsoft, based on a book by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, hits enough of the right notes to make its failures all the more frustrating. The script follows the entwined paths of Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates with a pointed sense of the cultural divide between the hip, self-absorbed Apple cofounder and the brilliant alpha geek behind Microsoft's eventual software empire, contrasting the Mac's countercultural underpinnings with the PC's more strait-laced origins. But Read more

XLNT background of the early years. I'm sure that people who are finally getting fed up with the PC world will have a lot of fun with any of the Apple's. The movie is a must see.

Several aspects catapulted me into this movie with a mesmerizing intensity which caused me to watch it several times, and to know I'll continue to do so periodically.
4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful little time capsule
I enjoyed this movie when it first aired on TNT, and only recently got around to buying it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Restrained Mary Lambert, but not too much so
This really is a gorgeous production and it's nice to note that the critics have been kinder to it than other Mary Lambert films ("Pet Semetary 1 and 2" and "Siesta", to name a few).Lambert is usually a flamboyant director and not afraid of wearing her influences on her sleeve (Ken Russell, Nic Roeg, etc.).But like her many mentors, Lambert is capable of showing restraint when needed and "Grand Isle" is a perfect example.Set in Louisiana at the turn of the century, "Grand Isle" is filled with excellent set design and costuming. The photography is drenched in sunlight and the sequences are framed by "fades to white".In other words, an atmospheric and ambient endeavor. The musical score is quite nice.Touches of classical piano with synthesizer washes.Other reviewers have mentioned the plot, so I won't go in to that other than mention that there are some fabulous fantasy/flash-back sequences that are lovely and thought provoking. Those looking for a classy period romance/drama will enjoy this as much as the Mary Lambert and art-house afficianados.
