5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Follows His Star
This is one of the finest 60's westerns dealing with man's struggle for independence, overshadowed by "Hud," though far more entertaining a film. An incredible lineup, a cast of stars and future stars if you watch closely:Bill Bixby(helo pilot), Walter Matthau, George Kennedy, Gena Rowlands and Bill Rausch. A year later you would know Rausch as the one-armed man Dr. Richard Kimble chased for 4 seasons on "The Fugitive." Adapted from,"Brave Cowboy," a simple story about a drifter-cowboy who didn't like fences, this is more fleshed out, with Kirk Douglas trying totalk sense into his friend, by breaking in jail with him, a plausible sub-plot to explain his visit. Douglas has some touching scenes with Gena Rowlands where, at times, he struggles with his conscience and allegiance to his friend. Nevertheless, Douglas escapes and the entire locals pursue. Douglas and his valiant horse outwit all armed forces aganst him as he ascends the mountains to freedom, leading to a terrifying, heart-wrenching climax on a rain-swept highway. The on-lccation scenes are sparingly shot, symbolically at times, never slowing the suspense. There are poetic moments and moments of stark violence, handled with deft assurance. One of those black and white movies that explores the grays as well, you sit in your seat it a daze. Then in a few moments you realize you were experiencing screen "realism." You just want to jump into the screen and run off with Douglas. A rarity. The classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story and a great film
One of Kirk Douglas' best roles, and a moving film in all respects, well-acted by the superb cast. Contrasts the remnants of the "old west" personified by Douglas, with the "new" west of social activism, progress and consumer products, property--and most symbolically, highways that cut up and limit the open range. When the Old resists the New, the New must deal with the Old on its own terms: humor and respect, but ultimately tragedy, are the results. This movie deserves to be released on DVD as soon as possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Underappreciated Minor Classic
This semi-forgotten 1962 film is a small, lost treasure featuring Kirk Douglas as a cowboy who can't quite come to terms with the modern world. The excellent cast includes Gena Rowlands as the wife of Douglas' best friend, a woman who has little use for the old-world notions of either man; Walter Matthau in an underrated portrayal of a sheriff torn between his admiration for Douglas and his duty to track him down; and Carroll O'Connor in his pre-Archie Bunker days as a truck driver whose path unexpectedly crosses with that of the fugitive cowboy. The film has some quaint morals and notions, and George Kennedy is a bit one-dimensional as a thuggish cop, but these are quibbles. Overall, it's a tightly told and well acted story that neatly crossed genres, featured one of Douglas' most charismatic leading performances, and tackled the theme of old Western individualism vs. the System a good seven years before "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" plowed similar ground. Keep an eye out for it on DVD, because its beautiful black-and-white vistas deserve a new digital rendering. ... Read more

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. 4-0 out of 5 stars Erratic Sound Problem
This is a wonderful movie which is why I replaced my VCR tape copied from TV by buying it as a DVD.Unfortunately, the sound is a major problem. Every time the scenes changed from dialogue to music or action such as thundering horses, calamitous weather, etc. the volume rose to a shreiking crescendo. It required constant volume adjustment to be able to watch the film comfortably.I don't recall this being such a glaring problem on the VCR copy. Perhaps sound is now mixed for the younger people who suffer hearing loss from the music (I use that term loosely) of their times, but if so, I don't see how they can make out the dialogue. This problem is not limited to just this DVD of course, but it spoiled an otherwise beautiful film.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tragically "Unknown" Gem
Now that Warner Brothers has recently given us "Fort Apache" and "Ballad of Cable Hogue" on dvd, we have only about 8 "necessary" westerns that beg to be released in the dvd format. These are "The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid", "The Gunfighter", "There Was a Crooked Man", "The Gray Fox", "Jesse James", "The Return of Frank James", "The Sundowners", and "The Culpepper Cattle Company".
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film
While not historically accurate, this is the most under-rated westwern I have seen. Robert Duval makes a convincing Jesse James with his evangelical outbursts and psychopathic behavior.Cliff Robertson plays the sly, yet introspective, charming ladies man as Cole Younger. The soundtrack and narrative couldn't be better. This is one very entertaining movie, with Duval and Robertson at their best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good film, bad history
Cliff Robertson is charming and charismatic as the outlaw Cole Younger and Robert Duval is menacing and more than a little scary as his comrade Jesse James in this film which purports to tell the story of the real-life attempted robbery of a bank in Northfield, Minnesota. The plot deviates sharply from some of the historical facts, but the greatest historical "sin" of the movie is the way in which it presents the townspeople of Minnesota, showing corruption, cowardice, and incompetence where, in fact, a group of ordinary people stood up to the most notorious outlaw gang in the West and basically shot them to pieces. This film in its strongly anti-Establishment thrust is certainly a product of its times, enoyable to watch but not history. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for trying so hard
I have returned to this mini-series after over a decade. I bought Lonesome Dove on DVD a while back and enjoyed it more than I did on my initial viewing. I was not as fond of "Return" when it first aired for a few reasons: The absence of Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrae, Tommy Lee Jones not returning, and a somewhat retreaded narrative. After watching "Return" again, these elements are still problematic but the movie tries so hard to re-capture the spirit of Lonesome Dove that it does manage to succeed on its own merit. One does wonder if, instead of replacing the missing cast members with new actors (or new characters in the case of William Petersen's McCrae like character for example) it had focused on what it did have, namely Rick Schroeder and the Hat Creek Outfit. There are some early appearances of some soon to be famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Dennis Haysbert. I might have liked this better if it had just been its own film instead of an over-reaching sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dove Sequel Review
Although not actually based on a McMurtry tale, this cracking good story continues the saga of the Lonesome Dove crew is a very entertaining style. For purists, it will be something of a dissappointment. For anyone who likes a good story, it is great. Some actors play the same roles as in the original "Dove", but some are new to their roles but do an amazing job, and even have an amazing resemblence, so that one soon no longer focuses on the difference (Capt Call, for example). A good story in its own right; six hours of fine entertainment. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It was the last roundup for Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, who gave their final performances in this melancholy modern Western. Arthur Miller wrote the script (some say overwrote) as a contemplation of his then-wife, Monroe, and set the piece in the half-world of Reno, Nevada. The dangers of this kind of meta-fictional approach are not entirely avoided, but the clean, clear-eyed direction of John Huston keeps the film grounded. And then there are the people: Gable a warrior past his time, Monroe overwhelmed by the world and its attentions, Montgomery Clift visibly broken in pieces, Eli Wallach a postwar neurotic. If the encroaching mortality of Gable, Monroe, and Clift weren't enough, the stark photography and Alex North's score confirm this as a film about loss. It may have its problems, but seen at a distance of many years, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Life at the End of the Trail
The film opens with a broken-down car (is the dead battery symbolism?). A young woman is rehearsing her testimony for her divorce in Reno. We see another woman leaving by train. A mechanic makes plans with an older man to go into the wild and capture horses. The invite the woman to go with them. [It is a slow starting film.] The dialogue brings out the personality of each character. The group starts out with a drink of whiskey (more symbolism?) "You can't change things" seems to be their working philosophy (see the title). So they have another drink of whiskey.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brutal but satisfying drama
Gable and Monroe save their best performances for last in this heartbreaking, often brutal drama expertly written by Arthur Miller and directed by John Huston.Thelma Ritter and Eli Wallach should be duly noted for their stunning supportive perfomances and Montgomery Clift delivers another pitch-perfect turn, this time as Percy the rodeo rider.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood's last Hurrah!
I love this movie. And I never say I love a movie or movie star or song, etc. you get the picture. The cast in this picture is gone forever. How the director ever got these stars together for one picture still amazes me. And it's not a great story, but, in a way it mirrors the actors real lives at that particular point in time. This cast, the likes of which you'll never see again, is what makes this movie unique.I don't know if future generations of movie goers will ever appreciate the specialness of these actors, I always wondered if Clark and Marilyn could feel that this was the last movie they would ever make? You'll never see the likes to them again.Enjoy! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Errol Flynn Film
Errol Flynn is one of a kind. He pulled this Western adventure off with style and little effort. The film looks at how position and power can change our best intentions. A good film in all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Morality and secular power
The previous opinions are similar to my own opinion , except I'll add that Ann Sheridan looks great in men's tight riding pants and tall boots. She has a fantastic alluring figure. Both Errol and Ann do strong confrontational roles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flynn's Disillusionment
Errol Flynn stars as an unfairly disgraced Union officer who decides to look out for number one in post-Civil War America. He quickly builds a financial empire, methodically taking over Silver City, a town dependant on its silver mines.Of course, a lot of people have to pay for his ambition and ruthlessness, and in the end, so must he.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Flick.
This is one of Rourkes lesser known movies that went straight to video, but dont let that fool you, as this is another great leading performance by Rourke. Micky does his job as an actor breathing life into his charater, and bringing the movie alive in a way that lesser actors would fail. The actress who plays his love interest does a fine job as well. Where the movie falls short is in the paint-by-numbers Hollywood type story line, and a terrible performance by an actor who plays the crazy redneck brother of Rourkes love interest, who plays the stupid, inbred, trailer park, white trash, bad guy the same way we've seen this type of character played a thousand different times in other movies... only worse. Thankfully, he is only in a few scenes. All in all, this is a well-acted, solid good little film.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD FILM
I like this film alot. The combination of the legendary Mickey Rourke and the all time favourite Lori Singer was well cast, I thought. I really enjoy this film. Frank T.Wells and Scarlett, are intreresting characters, you want them to stick together and end up well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Disturbing Film
This is a great, disturbing film about a former convict/rodeo rider (Mickey Rourke) who falls in love with a beautiful, emotionally disturbed young woman (Lori Singer) who, because she can't shake her life of crime, brings down the man who loves her. 5-0 out of 5 stars The real west, brought to life with a harsh, brutal beauty
C'mon now, fess up: did you ever really believe in John Wayne as a cowboy? Or any of the other actors from 30s, 40s and 50s westerns? With their clean shirts, their white hats, their crisp scarves and their middle-America ethics, they were about as convincing as Harrison Ford as the president of the United States. The westerns of times past were about what we wanted the west to be, not what it was. Because the real west wasn't pretty and it wasn't romantic. It stank!
5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful movie
mccabe & mrs. miller is often talked about as one in a list of director robert altman's seventies films that takes on a cinematic genre (namely the western) and subverts it to the point of making it seem like an attack on its cinematic precedents. the traditional western's gung-ho heroism is nowhere in evidence and, it seems, mccabe is a mere parody of a hero that director invites the audience to laugh at.

I just love Gwen Brister's 1950 book "Jubilee Trail," a vivid piece of historical fiction which travels from the rarified upper class world of Victorian New York City to the wild frontier of Mexican-ruled pre-statehood California. It is a great love/adventure story with two amazingly strong female protagonists, Garnet, the sheltered wife; and fallen woman Florinda who travel together with the Santa Fe traders via wagon train along the Jubilee Trail from Missouri to California.I had no idea it was ever a movie so imagine my excitement when I saw it was available for home viewing.

Audie Murphy stars in this cookie-cutter revenge Western as a squeaky-clean Boy Scout hunting the man who killed his family, but it only crackles to life when black hat Dan Duryea steps onscreen with his hyena laugh and troublemaking high spirits. A corrupt sheriff and a scheming lawyer send eager beaver Murphy to arrest Duryea, a wanted killer and a devious foe, and are astounded when Murphy delivers--he was never intended to survive the experience. But Duryea takes a liking to the kid who orders a glass of water in a tough bar ("To drink?" asks the bartender incredulously), and tags along on his quest as a grinning shadow sidekick, leading him through the underworld and stirring things up just to see the fireworks. The rest of the film is often plodding and predictable, and the second-rate cast never makes an impression. It's Susan Cabot's third turn as Murphy's love interest, but there's hardly a spark between them. A stiff Russell Johnson--theProfessor from Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Audie Murphy westerns.
Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier of World War II. After the war he made a career in movies, mostly westerns. Because some of Murphy's westerns were routine B movies, the good ones he made have often been overlooked or under appreciated. Ride Clear of Diablo was one of Murphy's best. In it Murphy plays a man out to find the gang of cattle rustlers who killed his father and brother. A crooked sheriff -- who is involved with the rustlers -- sends him to a seedy town called Diablo to seek out a dangerous killer (played by Dan Duryea) with the expectation that Murphy's character will not come back alive. To everyone's surprise Murphy survives his encounter with Duryea, who eventually takes a liking to him. After various twists and turns of plot Murphy finally learns that the sheriff and town lawyer are the leaders of the gang of rustlers and -- with some unexpected help from bad-guy Duryea -- gets his revenge. Admittedly, this is not a great movie, but it is an exciting, well-done western which should please most western fans. I hope that someday it will be released in DVD, but I wouldn't count on it. If you're a western fan, I suggest that you get this VHS while this little gem of a western is still available.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Audie's best westerns!
If you like Westerns, (and even if you don't) this is a throughly enjoyable little film featuring the underrated Audie Murphy.Directed by Jesse Hibbs (who also directed Audie in his biographic film "To Helland Back"), from the very beginning, the film never gets boring. Audie plays a young man out to search for the murderer of his brother andfather, and is led by the sheriff and local lawyer to search in a seedyplace called Diablo. There, he runs into 'bad guy' Dan Dureya, and this iswhere the film really takes off, as the screen team of Murphy and Dureyajust really 'click' which is more than you can say for the romance betweenMurphy and Susan Cabot -- but that does not spoil this movie one iota. There's lots of shooting, intrigue and fancy riding by Murphy (who did hisown stunts). Not to mention the supporting role of Russell Johnson asanother local 'bad guy' and a good number of Universal's film cowboys makeappearances as well. You can safely watch this film with thekids...hopefully, Universal will release Audie's 1955 film"Destry" soon! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Company - Good Story
Four Big Sheriff's Stars for this production!I love westerns, particualrly set in this time "when the west was young," the 1860's - loved the soundtrack, loved the stark natural locations, loved the wit and literacy of the dialogue. The story moves right along, the characters are interesting. The director and writer draw us in to a world transforming where silly harmless pranks evolve into deadly serious crimes.I am getting to be a bit of a "cinema geek" in spotting tiny details. The handguns, nearly every one I saw, were 1873 model Colts (or a similar configuration). The time setting was for the film was 1863 - full decade before such firearms were available to the public. That's my only beef.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Bad Company": The Definitive Anti-Western
"Bad Company" (1972) is an underrated gem of a then-novel genre:
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic quirky western a gem
If you search for the film title "Bad Company" you'll find four films with that title. Only one of them is worth your time and this is it. The Drew Dixon (late Barry Brown) is on the run from the draft during the Civil War. He runs into petty criminal Jake Rumsey (Jeff Bridges)who promptly robs him. Dixon becomes a reluctant criminal and is drawn into Rumsey's gang of theives. Featuring fine supporting roles from John Savage, Ed Lauter and Jim Davis "Bad Company" features witty dialogue and, for its time (1972-3) an authentic feel for the old west. Featuring gorgeous cinematography by Gordon Willis and terrific charismatic performances by Bridges and Brown "Bad Company" has aged remarkably well because of this and the deft writing (by Robert Benton and David Newman) and direction by Robert Benton ("Kramer vs. Kramer", "The Late Show", "Places in the Heart").

Editorial Review

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. This movie KNOCKED ME OUT!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
Man From Snowy River is a good romance with lots of action and shot in a beautiful location. Good all around story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars it's on DVD now too!
The Canadian DVD release of this movie is available at www.sullivanboutique.com and it also includes a vintage short documentary film on the making of this movie -- a real gem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story - Well-Directed - Wonderful Cast
In this movie, 12 year old Christopher works hard on the struggling family farm, but can't seem to do enough to satisfy his demanding father. Dad comes to get drunk (again) with a couple of his drinking buddies in town and picks a fight with an upright, decent feller named Frank Chase, who accidentally kills Chris' father in self defense. This leaves Mom, Christopher and his little sister in worse shape financially than they had been in already. The decent feller, Mr. Chase, offers the struggling family any assistance he could provide them, seeing that he was partly responsible for taking away their breadwinner. But he is taken aback sometime afterward when Christopher, his sister and their Mom, just about out of resources, show up at Mr. Chase's door, ready to take him up on his offer of assistance. Mom proposes that she and her kids move into his small house with him, in a marriage of convenience which would not only give her kids a decent male role model and a roof over their heads, but would allow Mr. Chase 3 hot meals a day in a tidy environment, that as a single guy, he has been obviously lacking. In time, we see how "The Wild Pony" is woven into the story, and how young Chris' dream of one day owning that pony corresponds to the boyhood dream once held by Mr. Chase, and how those dreams begin to materialize along with the hopes of Chris' mother to remain out west in a family that can support itself.4-0 out of 5 stars THE WILD PONY
