5-0 out of 5 stars Stupendous!!!
This miniseries is by far the best movie I have ever seen--and I've seen thousands! The acting, writing, directing, music, and design are all perfect. It touched meso deeply--because I could relate to many aspects of the story--that I thought about it for days. It never lost its believability and drew me deeper and deeper into its vortex of romantic suspense. Megee's self-sacrifice--placing Ralph's career above her own needs and desires--was so admirable. And her unfliching faithfulness to him despite her lonliness, if not emptiness, was even more divine than the faithfulness Ralph professed to God. She becomes a true heroine but in a different way, an inner way, than we usually think of heroines.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
This miniseries was one of the formative memories of my adolescence--I remember watching it at 14, absorbed in the story and entranced by Meggie and Ralph. I watched it again as a 34th-birthday present to myself, and it was as moving a story as I remembered. Beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This movie was a truly great one. I have read the book and I feel that it was great also. I believe one of the reasons why it doesn't go into detail about Justine and Dane's relationship as much as a few people of liked or that there wasn't anything that showed the relationship between Patsy and Jims is because the movie is so long without it. It's around 10 hours long. I think it showed the closeness between Justine and Dane quite well just some people didn't pay attention! Probably just thinking about something to complain about. I for one think that the actors did a great job and sound not too much like they were American. Give them a break. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself to see this movie
The deal with Somewhere in Time is simple: if you have ever been in love, or have a romantic bone in your body, and if you can put aside for 90 minutes the cynicism we all seem to need to survive this modern world, then you will love this film. 5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Reeve as an "actor"
This movie is absolutly beautiful! Make sure you have kleenex available...if the movie does not get to you, the music will....I can just picture Christopher holding out his hand to his wife.....somewhere in time...............

5-0 out of 5 stars See This One on DVD or VHS---It's Lovely!
I haven't seen this film for quite a few years but "The Lake House" out now reminded me of it because there is a "time lapse" in the love stories of both films. And remembering Christopher Reeve-----Why did that blasted accident falling off his horse have to happen to such a nice guy? But, Chris still "lives" in this and his other movies.I recommend you see this one.Email:Boland7214@aol.com ... 5-0 out of 5 stars High emotional Movie
Patricia Arquetteis magnificent. This entire movie
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece! Why no DVD?
This is one of those very rare films where everything is just perfect. The cast. The music. The filming. The script. Magical. The country is so beautiful it is painful. The film is so permeated with grief it will melt your heart. Watch it and weep.
5-0 out of 5 stars A River of Grief
Patricia Arquette is excellent as a young woman numb with grief who slowly comes to terms with being left behind after her husband and young son are murdered in their home during a robbery. When she travels to Burma to vacation with her sister, Andy (Frances McDormand), she finds a country in as much pain as she is and slowly finds the purpose she so desparately needs. Based on actual events, John Boorman deftly weaves on a large loom the fine thread of Laura Bowman's intimate story with the thicker yarn of a country fighting for democracy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Corny, predictable, contrived, and deceptive (in portraying New York.) I love it!
First, let me say that by quality film standards this is a terrible movie, in many respects. I live to walk on videos of this type with football cleats. But, this movie falls into the "I hated this movie so much, I couldn't help but watch it whenever it was on" category. And now I love it. I don't know what it is about this movie. I tried to put my finger on it many times. I always have and always will hate "Sleepless in Seattle," which is a totally contrived load of crap. But "You've Got Mail" has an undefinable charm to it that forces you to look past it's simplified portrayal of a happy go lucky, skip around the neighborhoods of New York atmosphere. It makes you question why you buy into such sappy dialogue and situations. It's not just because of the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks chemistry, because I hated the despicable "Sleepless in Seattle" and always thought the entire premis of "Joe Versus the Volcanoe" was a joke. But in this movie, contrived as it may be, that interplay between the two works. Though their acting is also hammy at best, I also love the contributions of Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Stephen Zahn and Jean Stapleton. This is one of my guiltiest pleasures. I'll only watch it with the remote on toggle to some type of sports programming in case my friends walk in on me while I'm watching it so I can jump inmmediately to the "Binford Lumberjack Finals," or something like that. But were they to walk in at the end of this movie and find me glossy eyed with a lump in my throat, I'd never hear the end of it. I love this movie. There! I admit it.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I absolutely love this movie. Hanks and Ryan have so much chemistry together and the story is so adorable. I have watched this movie so many times and love it more every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful intellectual and ethical exercise...
This is one of my favorite films from the '60's, and I saw a superb stage production of it as well, two years before the film version. Sir Thomas More, chancellor of England, is asked to choose between his King and his Catholic Church. He refuses to take a side, publicly, but everyone in the nation knows he opposes King Henry's decision to break with the Pope so that he can marry another wife. How More (Paul Schofield) tries to stay alive via a silence that shouts a rebuke makes for compelling drama. A young Robert Shaw does a flamboyant and wonderful job as King Henry, but then, the entire supporting cast, as is common in British productions, is great. Faith and greed, power and the loss of it, survival and sacrifice...all are elements of this fine film.
5-0 out of 5 stars A courageous and moral man - Thomas More
A 1966 period movie with a true story about a man who stands up against powerful King Henry VIII and many others for his moral beliefs in regard to divorce. The king wanted a male heir and wanted to divorce his wife and take another one to achieve that.He was trying to get the church's permission to get out of this marriage with their approval. The stand Thomas More takes complicates his life in many ways, including his family and friends.More is an influential man of some means who was high in the leadership of England at that time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Would St. Thomas More really be any more popular today?
The technical excellence of this film on every level has already been sufficiently and deservedly documented many times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why not release this in DVD???
I have seen the DVD release for region 4 dvd players... why in the world didnt they release it for all regions? That was very stupid marketing.Fortunately I got very lucky and bought a VHS original that I found in the sale bin from a Rental video store as a prev rental. This movie is powerful and everytime I watch it gets an emotional response from me.The cast is wonderful and the horse... very well trained and just a magnificent animal! If you have an opportunity to see this I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phar Lap ~ An Olympian Tragedy
Throw together the modern real life drama's of Smarty Jones and Barbaro, then add Seabiscuit to the mix along with a measure of life-threatening intrigue, and you have something close to the tale of the magnificent Phar Lap, a real-life equine Olympian.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Racehorse - Is DVD Coming Soon?
A good horse racing story - especially if it's based on real life - usually gets my attention and this is no exception. Phar Lap was a famous Australian race horse. This was another Seabiscuit-type horse who overcame big odds to achieve greatness. He just never got much press outside of Australia, I guess.

This movie takes all the clamation classics I remember as a kid and turns them upside down like only Tim Burton can.A twisted tale of the characters of Halloween town taking over Christmas after kidnapping Santa Claus.Though some of the characters are a little frightening for the young ones, the tone is mostly upbeat and funny. This is a charming, though very short movie. The dvd itself is loaded with great extras and worth the price two times over. ... Made in 1964, but set in 12th-century England, this is the fact-based story of Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dear friend, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Richard Burton). When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Becket cries out for DVD release
I just don't understand why this gem of a movie hasn't yet been released on DVD. I am a teacher of English Literature in a college in Bangalore, India, and when I talk to my students about the European Middle Ages, I strongly recommend this film. 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent movie, great performance by Cliff Robertson
The principal strength of this movie is the acting by Cliff Robertson. This was an exceptionally challenging role, that required a real breadth of acting style to portray the changes that the protagonist went through. The oscar was well deserved. The story moves along well and you feel the pathos of the two main characters. Some of the minor characters are very one-dimensional and not well acted to boot. The movie shows some of the influences of the late sixties when it was produced, but many of the underlying issues such as treatment of the mentally challenged and medical experimentation are still quite current.

Editorial Review

Albert Finney (George) and Diane Keaton (Faith) play well against each other in this rather bleak and (for director Alan Parker) subdued story about a middle-class California couple trying and failing to be "grown-up" about divorce. George is a successful writer who has found another woman. After he walks out, Faith takes up with the handsome working-class stud who is building their tennis court (played by Peter Weller). Her new relationship is just something to ease the pain; George's might be more, except that he is drawn back again and again to his own house, his own wife, and his three daughters--especially the eldest (Dana Hill), who angrily refuses to forgive his dereliction.Increasingly unbalanced, and finally violent, he tries to bully his way back into their lives while maintaining his new life. The movie is too slow, and the surprisingly clichéd emotional atmospherics (a lingering shot of Finney in a boat on alake, clutching his head in grief) sometimes make you feel you have stumbled into a bad made-for-TV event. But the story's the thing--that and the two fine leading performances. 5-0 out of 5 stars A superb movie which deserves more acclaim
The acting performances and directing, the writing, the structure of the film, are all Oscar quality. There are several vignettes in this film, like Diane Keaton in the bathtub smoking a joint singing the Beatles in French, that rank with the great moments in film.As others have said, Finney and Keaton, and I'd say the oldest daughter too, give super performances. It is incomprehensible that this movie is not available on DVD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars JONES BRINGS THIS KELTON WESTERN TO LIFE
Tommy Lee Jones brings the Elmer Kelton western classic to life with THE GOOD OLD BOYS. Like Monte Walsh, the story follows a tried and true cowboy's nostalgic efforts to hold on to the only life he knows. Even being roped down in order to help his brother keep his homestead and an appealing lady friend aren't enough to make Huey Calloway (Jones) settle down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this movie on DVD?
I must agree with one of the previous reviewers. I think it's ridiculous that this great classic version of A Midsummer Night's Dream isn't available on DVD.I own only a VHS tape that I recorded from television and would much prefer the movie on DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Occassionally, a rare and beautiful film becomes avavailable for those with discrimnating taste! I agree that this film is more than worthy of being published on dvd. Taking into account the age of the movie, the effects are amazing! Mickey Rooney is gorgeous as "Puck". Even James Cagney as "Bottom" is outstanding. I can't rave on enough about this film and encourage anyone to see a simply delightful and glorious feast for the eyes. Cocteau's beauty and the beast was filmed about the same era and is an inspiration to directors such as Ridley Scott (Legend, Aliens) As an artist, myself, I pull inspiration and beauty from older movies that today's directors have to fool around with because of the lack of vision and no original ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Review, a Rant
There's something absolutely imbecilic about this not being available on DVD. I mean, Criterion, Kino, those jerks that supply Wal Mart with crappy dollar DVDs, anybody! Bad enough we had to wait years for the Brando Julius Caesar (apparently coming out soon, finally!). What are they waiting for?

You've probably seen comedies that won't make you laugh as hard as this deadly serious soap opera, drawn from the overheated oeuvre of literary shlockmeister Sidney Sheldon. Marie-France Pisier plays a poor little French girl who is seduced and abandoned and seduced and abandoned during World War II--until she finally figures out that she can profit from her body. She sleeps her way to stardom on the silver screen, then reinvolves herself with an American cad (John Beck) and gets him to kill his lovably obtuse rich wife (Susan Sarandon). You'll be howling. 2-0 out of 5 stars This remake is only good if you haven't seen the original.
George C. Scott made my girlfriend cry she was so moved by this version of the film. Then I showed her the classic version with Peter Fonda et.al.And she said that "Every kid in America or anyone who applies for U.S. citizenship should have to watch it."
1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT waste your time!..See the original 1957 version instead!
With all due respect to those of you who gave this a thumbs up, this 1997 version of "12 Angry Men" is at best a "passionless, passionate" remake of the 1957 original with Henry Fonda and Lee Cobb.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Inside Look
12 Angry Men is a movie about a jury made up of 12 very different men that have just listened to a murder case and must come to a conclusion that will determine a young mans future. It is very interesting to see the twelve different men's intents, interests and personalities. What seems to be an easy guilty vote in the beginning boils down into a long and heated argument between the men as some people just want to go home and some people want to serve justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Overlooked 80's movie
This movie is a fantastic must see from the 80's. Especially for anyone that loves the music of INXS, the soundtrack is great and the dance scene at the gym still makes me wonder where Adian Quinn learned to dance like that.If you have missed this one please try to get a copy, it is a must see and should be on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underated, Overlooked Classic!
Alot of people have never seen or even heard about this 1984 movie. Reckless is a underated, overlooked classic. The movie stars Adain Quinn as Johnny in his break out role & Daryl Hannah early in her career plays Tracey. Movie takes place in a gray, smoggy, depressing looking steel town somewhere in Pennsylvania. Johnny is a troubled smart {...} rebel with a alcholic father, no friends & years before his mother abandoned the family for reasons that are not clear. Tracey is a pretty & popular cheerleader with a loving upper middle class family preparing for college in the fall. But something is missing for Tracey - her boyfriend & friends bore her & she feels she is missing out on something. She desparately wants to live on the edge instead of her predictable, safe, day-to-day, ho-hum exsistance. Tracey wants excitement. She exchanges glances in class with Johnny. A charity dance pairs her with him by chance. They play cat & mouse games. He challenges her. She takes dares. So she takes up with the mysterious, sexy & dangerous Johnny & starts really living & feeling for the first time in her life. Their chemistry & sexual attraction is instant & all consuming. They fall quickly in love & lust. Film contains more than one scene of the sexiest, most graphic, explicit & passionate sex scenes allowed in a R rated film. Full frontal nudity. A steamy pool scene. A love scene in a boiler room of their empty school. Her parents bed. You can almost feel Johnny's obsession with Tracey. A excellent soundtrack with Bob Segar's songs & new wave music of the 1980's really adds to the film. The ending really leaves it up to your imagination as to what might happen next. Do they really ride off into the sunset forever? I would really recommend you track this film down -it won't dissappoint. This is one of my favorite films of all time. Really brings you back to your high school days & the excitement of first love.

4-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
Although i thought Darryl Hannah's performance was especially wooden, i absolutely loved it. I remember it was the first time i ever laid eyes on Aidan Quinn. I especially love the dance scene in that film. One of the great 80s flicks! I'm in the process of collecting my fav 80's flicks and was very disappointed to see this one has'nt made it to dvd yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How many ways are there to say "excellent?"
I love this movie! I was knocked out by director Pakula's interpretation of the book. He (and Tad Mosel, the screenwriter) fleshed it out considerably and added dimension and depth to the characters without once bypassing any of the book's tone and purpose. There is much to be lauded about this movie. First, of course, is Sandy Dennis's flawless portrayal of Sylvia Barrett. Dennis imparted considerable pathos and emotion to the young, idealistic teacher. The other parts were perfectly cast, right down to Jose Rodriguez (which is his name in the book, his name in the movie, and his real name, to boot!). There is no sex, no bad language, no nudity-- nothing that current films are so rife with. This was back when movie makers had to rely on their imagination, education, and sensitivity to put together an excellent movie. Not like today, where things tawdry and gruesome and depressing are featured and sensibility is empty and meaningless. See this movie-- you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis, And Only Dennis
It's hard to believe this role wasn't written for Sandy Dennis.Of course, the film is derived from the classic book about an idealistic young teacher on her first job, confronted with street-wise students in her first year.5-0 out of 5 stars Sandy Dennis at her best...
Sandy Dennis in her role as high school teacher Sylvia Barrett is truly magnificent!!! She outshines every other actor or actress in the movie. She does not overact - instead, she strikes one by her flawless presentation of an initially overtaxed teacher who develops towards an inspiring person, not only for her pupils, but also for those who watch the film with the intention to become a teacher her- or himself, as I do. What I appreciate especially about Up the down staircase is that with a minimum of special effects or dramatic events, a realistic portrayal of school life is achieved - from the teacher's as well as from the pupil's point of view. Dennis herself ranks among the most underrated Hollywood actresses, but like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the film Up the down staircase stands as one of her masterpieces and prove that back in 1992, when she died of ovarian cancer, America lost one of its most gifted and unique actresses. ...
