5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Today I REJOICE!I have been waiting for years to hear the news that "TAP" starring the GREATS Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines would be released on dvd.The date is August 29, 2006 so get ready! This movie is tap dance history! Great tap dancers old and young join forces to bring to the screen a celluloid history lesson for those who care to be educated. This is one of my favorite movies and while I haven't been able to watch it since Gregory's passing in August, 2003, I plan to celebrate on the release date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, TAP is coming on August 29, 2006!!
We can now rejoice!Gregory Hines in all his glory is finally being released and will be out on August 29, 2006.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to describe the brilliance of this movie :-)
Wow.Apart from the fact that the late great Gregory Hines was one of the best tap dancers in the universe, this is an amazing movie. It has great music and the dancing is out of this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of DVD To Kill a Mockingbird
The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Jeroen Krabbé, Christopher Lee, and Irene Papas. The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean, making for a lush, lovely visual experience. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Near Perfect Rendering of an Epic Tale
This particular film adaptation of Homer's epic poem, staring Armand Assante as Odysseus, and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, from the studios of Hallmark Entertainment, is more than likely the best film rendition of this grand story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, faithful adaptation
In the comentary, the director upfront admitts wishing to focus on the most entertaining parts of the Odyssey and this he does. I do not believe their is much to criticize (although there are some to be done) given the fact that even with scenes removed the runtime of the film is close to four hours. Therefore credit is due for fitting as much as they did.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Wasted Voyage
Although the book version of the Odyssey was capturing, the movie was rather disappointing because they left out quite a few scenes and changed the story a bit in some parts, which made it rather dull.

Editorial Review

This simple-minded account of the Black Panther Party is insulting to anybody who ever admired the positive qualities of the organization or at the very least took their militancy seriously. Melvin Van Peebles wrote the thin script, and son Mario directs it with little of the penetrating and expansive sensibility necessary to understand the subject in its broadest context. The presence of a big cast with a lot of familiar names and faces--including real-life Panther contemporaries Jerry Rubin and Dick Gregory--give the project a false air of importance. Read more

I first viewed this film when it was first released and now here it is 10 years later and I'm looking to purchase it so that my 12 year old son can see a movie with some historical content and give him some insight on how his ancestors and black people in a whole were treated by not only white america but the government as well.....Hoping that it will spark questions in him at a young age like it did me as a grown man.Excellent movie and teaching tool I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect screen adaption of a classic book
I saw this movie on cable many years ago and did not get it.
4-0 out of 5 stars More than Nicholson and Streep
Aside from Nicholson's and Streep's very good performances there is also an excellent cameo from Fred Gwynne where he sings in his deep smooth voice. I found it surprising that he sang so well. The rag man's part was some of the only humor in the movie. When he is yelling "rags" it seems he really has some to sell. I got the feeling of the Depression in the '30's. It's one of those sleeper classics that needs to be seen by a new generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The weight of the crudest loneliness!
If I should mention the best four and fundamentals artistic achievements of this beloved and talented actress, this would be one of them (Sophie' decision, The hours and Out of Africa would be the other two)

Elia Kazan made his directorial debut with this adaptation of Betty Smith's novel about a bright, young girl growing up in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn, trying to rise above her tenement existence. Sensitively filmed by Kazan, and graced with wonderful performances by James Dunn as the wistful, alcoholic father and Dorothy McGuire as a strong-willed mother. 5-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Period Piece About the Real Meaning of Thanksgiving
In this sequel to THE HOUSE WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE, it is 1947 and heroine Addie Mills, who is being raised by her widower father and his mother, befriends a horse while she is out collecting items for an autumn bouquet for her teacher. Unfortunately, the horse belongs to a crusty old codger named Walter Rhenquist, who hates Addie's dad because a pond James Mills dug for him leaked (James had warned him it was a bad place to put a pond, but he wouldn't listen). When Addie's teacher tells the class a story about the Pilgrims befriending the Indians, she decides to befriend her dad's enemy by bringing him Thanksgiving dinner. A new friendship is the surprising result.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Nostalgic Piece
I adore the Addie Mills specials and wish they would be shown on television again after all these years. These wholesome programs stand the test of time and are so warm, poignant, and worthwhile. The Holiday Treasure is one of the best Thanksgiving specials I've ever seen and am pleased to now own a copy, along with the other two Addie Mills television programs. The ensemble is phenomenal and the storyline very touching. It just doesn't get much better than this. Television programmers, are you reading this???

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thanksgiving Classic
Introduce this compelling classic to your loved ones this Thanksgiving and they'll never forget it.Broadway veteran Barnard Hughes adds another dimension to the already great ensemble of Jason Robards, Mildred Natwick, and Lisa Lucas.Hughes, only in his fifties at the time, made a specialty of playing "old codgers" with delightful results!Incidentally, the moustache worn by Jason Robards was to hide a scar on his upper lip after an auto accident. In the equally great previous production, "The House Without A Christmas Tree", he is clean-shaven. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Schmaltz Fest
Unfortunately, this 30's schmaltz-fest seems pretty dated by now.I guess the Depression-era audiences needed some fluff4-0 out of 5 stars A FANTASIA ON STRAUSS.
The highly fictionalized fantasia on the life of the great Johann Strauss. This 1938 film is a sacher torte of pleasure for anyone who loves his music and, in the lead, Fernand Gravet does a commendable job acting-wise. The very attractive - albeit large-boned - Polish soprano Miliza Korjus sings with a truly brilliant voice & she became the object of intense jealousy from M-G-M's reigning diva, Jeanette MacDonald! Because it was decided that there wasn't room for two Prima Donnas at the studio, the firmly established MacDonald was kept on the payroll while the European Korjus virtually went into American obscurity. Backgrounds for the film were shot in Chino, California. It is rumoured that portions of this underrated gem was indeed directed by Josef Von Sternberg.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood operetta at its best
Take the story of a man torn between two women, add the music of Johann Strauss and the scenery of 1840's Vienna and you have The Great Waltz, an irresistible cream puff of a movie.Miliza Korjus-rhymes with gorgeous and she is-portrays the fictional opera singer Carla Doner in a delicious performance that verges on May West camp, murmuring most of her lines through a perpetual full-toothed grin and waltzing herself giddy while singing absolutely impossible sounding obliggatoes to Strauss's walzes-never loosing a beat and never out of breath!Luise Rainer's innate sweetness and vulnerability are perfect for Poldi, Strauss's devoted wife.Watch her silent reaction when she realizes that the song she thought he wrote for her was actually intended for Madame Doner-incredible acting. On the other hand, Fernand Gravet, as Strauss, is unexceptional and a bit bland.Among the excellent supporting cast, Hugh Herbert as the befuddled music publisher and Curt Bois as the comic, but wise violinist are outstanding. The movie does require a temporary suspension of belief. It is full of improbabilities, including the all-female orchestra that performs Tales of the Vienna Woods in a biergarten--wearing evening gowns, Madam Doner's apparent ability to glance at a piece of music once and perform it word and note perfect (the citizens of Vienna take this one step further by singing along even though the waltzes in question have yet to be published!), and the most peculiar version of Die Fledermaus ever performed. If you are looking for historical accuracy or musical purity, this is not your movie, but if you want a delightful Hollywood operetta, you can't do much better than The Great Waltz. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all time great romantic comedies
As romantic comedies go,"The April Fools" is one of the undiscovered treasures of the 1960s, comparable to the vanguard of all New York romantic comedies "Breakfast At Tiffany's". This film is far more simplistic (too simplistic it seems for many reviewers in 1969) and perhaps because of this it will strike more of a chord with today's audiences weary of recent ponderous comedies.
5-0 out of 5 stars My All Time Favorite Movie

4-0 out of 5 stars Disperse Ye Rebels!Disperse!!
This is a decent film that deserves to be re-issued on DVD.While not a big budget opus like infamous Mel Gibson's THE PATRIOT, this is a much higher quality film overall. While a bit slow in the beginning with family relationships in Lexington, the film picks up when the British at last appear on the screen! There is a nice shot of the British columm deploying impressively into line to face Captain Parker's company. The only problem here is that the British force at this point consisited of six companies of Light Infantry who jogged into town at a fast clip before forming line opposite the militia. This would have been less impressive to show, plus i guess the available re-enactors could not all be shown in Light Infantry garb.So we get the usual mix of line companies, Grenadiers and Lights all in group together!Colorful, but not accurate!
4-0 out of 5 stars Lexington in April 1775
This film is set in 1775 Colonial Massachusetts. A peddler is stopped and searched, the British troops find a musket, powder, balls and confiscate them and the wagon (Gun Control!). The peddler stops at a local tavern to tell about this. The people have noticed an increase in British troop patrols. We then meet a family and see a portrayal of life in the 18th century as similar to today. There is a meeting among the men, they discuss the relative military strengths of the Colonial militia to the 5,000 British troops in Boston. [In fact the militia had a long military experience in colonial warfare, the British were less experienced.]

This is defintely the cutest movie ever made. I've loved it since I was a kid, I'm 26 now and am purchasing it for my 3 yr old. I recommend this movie to anyone with a child or who has the heart of a child! I was pretty bummed to hear that the actress "Bridgette Anderson" who played Savannah died an unfortunate death in 1997. After a government-spawned "superflu" wipes out more than 90 percent of the earth's population, the devastated survivors must decide whether to support or resist the advances of a mysterious stranger from way down South (heh-heh) who wishes to claim this new world order for himself. Although the six-hour length makes it nigh-impossible to digest in one sitting, this well-paced adaptation of Stephen King's apocalyptic magnum opus ranks among the best adaptations of the author's work, with strong performances from Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, and especially Jamey Sheridan as a good-old-boy version of Old Scratch. The opening scene, set to the strains of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper," is one of the most chilling things ever shot for television. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STEPHEN KING FILM!
First off, this is a great movie that is one of the best Stephen King adaptations out there. One thing, this is based on the first cut version of the novel that came out many years ago and that is why not all full story is in it. Anyway, if you like good Stephen King adaptations, then this is the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Return On Investment
Until this decade, "Executive Suite" was rarely shown on TV, for good reason. The building crescendo of human expectations would get side-railed and it would appear boring to the non-accountants. This is a wonderful send-up from Cameron Hawley, who also wrote "Cash McCall,"(scheduled for re-make), which tackled those leverage-buyout sharks in the 50's. Both were written at a time when business was rewarding for all ranks of life and a man could still spin an idealistic yarn, without targeting the lowest common denominator. Two cast members, Dean Jagger and Nina Foch appear in both movies playing minor, though important characters. I give this film high marks for answering two questions: Is a company the sum of its parts, or is it just the leadership? What is the purpose of a corporation? How prescient this film was, that the leaders today can not re-invent themselves without going overseas. Louis Calhern, Paul Douglas, Frederick March and Barbara Stanwyck must have realized they would be taking a stand on a way of life that should not vanish.Having worked in an accounting office and seen what one insignificant death in a company can launch within, I found this to be extremely fascinating for the human drives, conscious and unconscious, that corporate maneuvering drops on the corporate animal. When William Holden's character, very human and honest, testifies at the climax, the board meeting, by revealing his personal philosophy to win a concensus, there is tremendous release, because you feel he is speaking for humanity, if it cares about the future. Sadly, we know, that the nouveau ceo's have swung to epitimize the character of Frederick March, self-aggrandizing,low and soul-less.It succeeds without a music score, building upon its tight script, with room for another Shelly Winters cameo. Nina Foch, plays her role as the career executive secretary with great strength, decency and smarts. All the characters were nicely drawn, fleshed out. You could tell that by the way they all learned from one another and were grateful for it. If people work together, there's enough for all, even at the top. Isn't that a refreshing idea?

5-0 out of 5 stars Packs a Punch
Show the last ten minutes of this film to anyone who doesn't have genuine passion for their work. It's a blockbuster sequence. William Holden's character, imbued with rampant energy and idealism, is just the tonic his ailing company needs, and while the ending of this film is predictable, it is also exceptionally powerful and makes wonderful viewing. Paul Douglas gives a nicely nuanced performance that epitomizes the middling, cautious attitudes of some real-life senior managers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-portrayed power struggle in the business world

1-0 out of 5 stars So incredibly disappointed....
I have to echo the comments everyone else seems to have made about this movie. What a disappointment, both from the point of view of a fan of the movies and a fan of the books. I could ALMOST have gotten on board with the Anne/Gilbert in WWI thing IF they had just used some of the story from Rilla of Ingleside (let's remember that her CHILDREN were in WWI, NOT Gilbert!!!!)... but they didn't even do that. When L.M. Montgomery has given us so many fantastic stories, why invent your own? That's not what Anne is about at ALL!!!
