5-0 out of 5 stars A movie for this day, too
This is one of the greatest anti-war movies to come out of Hollywood, but it is great not only for that.It is blessed by brilliant acting, tight directing, outstanding production design, cinematography and score, all of which got it nominated for eight Academy Awards. In almost any other year The Sand Pebbles would have won several of those, but 1966 was a high water mark for Hollywood, and this gripping epic came away with none.Google 1966 for the Academy Awards and you will see why.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Dramatic film has it all.
A wide array of brilliant actors are like gems around the crowning performance of Steve McQueen. But the key hero in this story is a man who is at once tragic as well as heroic. To me, the film's theme is man's fight against our lesser urges; racism, greed, rabid nationalism, you name it.The battle is joined again and again. But unlike many Hollywood films, there is no certainty that right will prevail over might. And sometimes, in trying to do the right thing, characters are faced with tragic mistakes, or face terrible consequences.

Editorial Review

Roman Polanski's adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy remains one ofthe most infamous for a number of reasons: the copious amounts of bloody gore, its expert use of location settings (filmed in North Wales), and Lady Macbeth's nude sleepwalking scene. Despite its notoriety, though, this does remain one of the more compelling film adaptations of the Scottish tragedy, if one of the more pessimistic takes on the story of Macbeth and his overreaching ambition. If you think the play is normally a bit of a downer, you haven't seen Polanski's bleak version of it, made in reaction to the murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, by the Manson "family." 4-0 out of 5 stars ROMAN POLANSKI AND WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Bloody well good, and bloody! Roman Polanski's violent, location accurate version of Shakespeare's murderous Macbeth and his lady, seems a natural, insightful interpretation for the 20th Century. So true to Shakespeare's original work, and so indebted to fine cinema.

2-0 out of 5 stars Turned me off
I had to force myself to give this two stars intead of one because, to be fair, there IS a great cast, meaningful scenes, and gorgeous cinematography. However, there were many things that totally turned me off this movie. Let me confirm that I am an avid fan of Shakespeare and love many of his plays as well as certain movies that have been made of them. In this one, however, I rather felt that Polanski took Shakespeare's play and ran wild with it. Yes, Macbeth is disturbing and depressing, so the fact that these elements turned my stomach may be considered by some as a success on Polanski's part, but there are plenty of other things the play didn't include that the movie had unnecessarily. For example, the nudity. I'm no prude, but there was plenty of unnecessary nakedness in this film and some of it seemed to add to the idea of the characters taking advantage of each other (maybe this was Polanski's plan, but I doubt it). The scene with Lady Macbeth wandering naked and mad around her room wouldn't have bothered me so much if a male "doctor" hadn't been standing there oogling at her. I wanted to smack him as well as Lady Macbeth's maidservant who stood there letting her mistress walk around naked in front of a man; how many of the notoriously protective and prudish maidservants back then would have allowed such a thing? The inaccuracy of this scene made me think Polanski might've just wanted an opportunity to prove that Lady Macbeth was just as attractive without her clothes; I think the males in the audience guessed that much already. Most disturbing to me, though, was the disgusting scene showing a woman bathing her AT LEAST eleven or twelve year-old-son! He wasn't sitting in a tub, either, but standing and baring all in front of the camera. Thanks, Polanski; perversion wasn't supposed to be the main topic of the film, but who remembers these things? Some of the violence was a little too much, too; I did not need to seethe perspective from the eyes of a decapitated head or a man getting a sword in the groin. The movie altogether gave me afeeling of dirty depression. Shakespeare may be partly to blame for this, but it was definetly Polanski's additions to the story that decided me against a second viewing. This would have succeeded as a moving film without a great deal of the nastiness that it contained; substituting gratitious shock-value junk for quality always fails. Next time, try relying a little more on the pathos of the story, Polanski. And please, let's keep parents out of the room when their pre-teens are taking baths, shall we?

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bard According to Polanski
It is always refreshing to see new twists on Shakespeare as each generation of directors gives its take on the Master. While this adaptation drags near the ending and sometimes the dialogue is diffuclt to follow, for the most part this MACBETH works. Polanski has cast the Macbeths (Jon Finch and Francesca Annis) as younger than many directors do, has Lady Macbeth do her famous sleepwalking scene in the nude and portrays the coven of witches naked as well. Every critic has commented on the bloodiness of Polanski's version. There is blood everywhere; the death of Macbeth will make you gasp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas movie
I have worn out my VHS tape I copied off tv many years ago of this Christmas classic.I will be thrilled if they ever release it and the other Addie Mills specials on DVD. I always looked forward to seeing them when they aired. It was nice seeing the review from Lisa Lucas (Addie Mills).Nice to hear she enjoyed making these movies and knows how much pleasure she brought us all. She and Mildred Natwick and Jason Robards were so special together.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christmas Stories Ever
It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my all time favorite T.V. special!
I loved watching this T.V. special when I was a young--er.I was about the same age too as Addie, and I looked forward to watching it year after year after year, but then they stopped running the special and I was so disappointed.I just took a chance to see if I could find it for sale on the Internet and low and behold, I found it so I just placed my order! You have no idea how thrilled I was to see that it was available to buy.I can't wait to see it again, considering it's been about 30 years or more since I've seen it.I couldn't remember the name of the special but all I knew for certain was Jason Robards played Addie's dad, and Mildred Natwick played her grandmother. It was one of the best things I've ever seen on T.V., and now I can pass this on to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT!!!
Along with "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "King Lear," "Julius Caesar" remains one of my favorite tragedies of William Shakespeare. (With "Coriolanus" not so far behind.) This play of Shakespeare's and (this move for that matter) was what got me into Shakespeare in the first place, and later an English Major in college. Like I said, this is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and this movie in no way whatsoever falls short of the book. It was truly a blessing to get James Mason (Brutus), John Gielgud (Cassius) and Marlon Brando (Mark Antony) together. This movie (with virtually no special effects) shows that it takes good directing, good actors, and a good script to make things work. Some of you probably know that this was the first play of Shakespeare's to be performed at the Globe Theatre. Moving on to the material at hand, this play repesents moral ambiguity in a political setting. We meet Cassius and Brutus. Cassius is not happy with the fact that the ambitious Julius Caesar is to be crowned, and the flawed, but still virtuous Brutus reluctantly agrees to take part in the conspiracy to assasinate Caesar. Like in the play, we meet Mark Antony (Brando) and he seems insignificant. But he will later prove very significant. We only meet Calpurnia (Caesar's wife) and Portia (Brutus's wife) briefly. But they do make the most of their one scene. For that matter, even the Soothsayer who only has a minor part does well. (Perhaps good acting often means making the best of even a small part.) As most of you know, around the halfway point Julius Caesar meets his fate, and Louis Calhern portrays the famous line: "Et Tu Brute? Then fall Caesar" well. Marlon Brando is nothing short of phenomenal when he appears to make peace with the conspirators and then reveals his real feelings in the famous" "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war" passage. The naive (but still likable) Brutus delivers his convincing funeral passage well. Unfortunately for him, Mark Antony's counterspeech is nothing short of hypnotic. (One of the best things about this play is that rather than good guys and bad guys, we have 3 major characters with 2 opposing views, and we can be lead into sympathy and understanding with either of them.) Despite the limited resources of the time, Louis Calhern's ghost of Caesar is frightening and effective. This leads to the final confrontation between Brutus and Cassius versus Octavius and Mark Antony. (For the record, at this point in time, Brutus and Cassius DID hold the advantage.) The battle where Antony crushes Cassius is so well done in that (1) it shows Antony's stategy, (2) it is well done without excess blood or special effects, and (3) it DOES NOT glorify war. It DOES in fact show war as the ugly and repulsive thing it is. Despite Cassius's faults (possibly through the good acting of John Gielgud), we are moved into sympathy for him when he meets his fate. (For the record, Mike Ansara, the servant of Cassius who is with him to the end would play a sympathetic Klingon Captain in "Star Trek's" 'Day of the Dove' and would be the voice of Mr. Freeze in the animated Batman series.) And James Mason continues his phenomenal performance of Brutus right up to the end. As in the play, the crowning touch is the respectful eulogy Mark Antony gives to Brutus, and Marlon Brando more than delivers. While I fear that some movies like a recent and really garrish "Hamlet" would have had Shakespeare crying in his grave, this production of "Julius Caesar" would do William Shakespeare proud.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sic Semper Tyrannus
James Mason, John Gielgud and Edmond O'Brien carry the day here in this largely marvelous film adaptation of Julius Caesar; to my mind, Shakespeare's greatest play. All three put their vast stage experience to work, and in particular Gieulgud's reading of Casca's complaints about Caesar's ascension is hypnotically powerful. All three are far more eloquent than Marlon Brando, who looks a little uncomfortable as Marc Antony and doesn't quite capture the two-sidedness of the fighting voluptuary who sees no reason he shouldn't step into Caesar's shoes.Louis Calhern is miscast as JC but gave rise to one of Hollywood's great anecdotes.Calhern volunteered to lie-in as Caesar's corpse during Antony's funeral oration and said after one take, "Can we do that again?I wasn't very good."Hollywood's byzantine union rules for stage extras hampered the filming of the battle scenes so thoroughly that this was the last time such a scene was ever shot in California.

5-0 out of 5 stars I call him "The Beard" (see below)
Next time I review Midsummer Night's Dream remind me to instead rant a bit about people who call it Midsummer's Night Dream and completely ignore any other intelligent comment on that great play. Bard, shmard, who gives a rat's patoot? That whiny review wouldn't cut in in "scholarly circles" whatever the hell those are in this age. We're lucky anyone refers to him at all, even as "Billy."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Fan
I don't know how many times I have watched my video of this film, but I enjoy watching every time!!!It is the one video I Treasure.I love all the songs. When will it be put on DVD????

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a fairytale
I'd had this video for years and can't tell you how many times I watched. It's like watching a beautiful fairytale. The setting, the costumes, the music are all beautiful. The entire cast superb. The only disappointing thing about this movie is that Mario Lanza did not get to perform the part of the prince even though he had recorded all the songs for the movie--it's his voice you hear--and the screenplay was written especially for him.But because he had a problem controlling his weight, the studio replaced him with Edmund Purdom, whom I think did a superb job overall--you can not tell he's not the one really singing.I love Ann Blyth as the leading lady--so lovely and so is her voice. All the songs are beautiful, and Mario's voice is out of this world.I gave my video to Anthony Kearns(one of the Irish Tenors) at one of his concerts and told him they should do a remake of this movie using him as the prince (of course they would have to deal with the Irish accent). As it turns out, Anthony now sings two of the songs from this movie.I recently got another video of this movie from Amazon.com and can once again watch it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars ABeautiful Musical but Sad Love Story !!
I finally got the opportunity to purchase this movie, and it is the singing of Mario Lanza that blows me away . My favorites are "Beloved" , "Serenade" and "Summertime in Heidelberg", and "Deep in My Hear, Dear" , everytime I hear Mario sang those songs to Kathie , my heart just melts.Edmund Purdom does make a very handsome prince and very good lip synching too. Must of been a very tough job for him.Ann Blyth was perfect in her role as the barmaid, and what a lovely soprano voice she has!! Edmund and Ann make a great couple and they had very good chemistry working together, no wonder they did a movie together again the following year "The King's Thief" .A must watch for musical lover's fan.5 stars for singing and acting !!!! ... Editorial Review

The short life and passionate music of romantic composer Frédéric Chopin provide the foundations for this 1945 drama, which proved influential in its gaudy, undeniably watchable formula of historical exaggeration and shrewdly simplified motives for its principals. In an Oscar-nominated performance, Cornel Wilde presents the Polish native as a passionate nationalist driven by his love of his native country and his hatred of its czarist regime, a thematic focus that can be forgiven in light of the political backdrop at the time of the production.Already a prodigy in his native land, where he's mentored by a shamelessly scenery-chewing Paul Muni as Professor Elsner, Chopin flees to Paris where his flashing eyes, dark nimbus of curls, and florid technique earn him stardom, while his involvement with the writer George Sand (a beautiful Merle Oberon, even when draped in then-provocatively masculine garb) introduces a romantic crescendo.Still, the tortured pianist-composer pines for his homeland, frets about its political fate, and begins to wither under the rigors of his new career as ur-superstar; in a typically over-the-top but riveting image, we see drops of blood spatter across the keyboard as he thunders through a recital, gallantly ignoring his failing health to spread his music and, by extension, awareness of Poland's fate.Numerous subsequent musical dramas (including two more Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Several Moments to remember.
This is the earliest movie rendering of the Chopin/Sand affair I have seen to date. However, in this, Sand is more of an impediment to what Chopin must do--raise funds for his Polish rebel friends. This is something that has been neglected to a degree, in the other two movies I have seen on this subject (Impromptu, Desire for Love). Both acknowledge his Polish-ness and one does even show his rushed departure from his beloved homeland.
5-0 out of 5 stars A SONG THAT I'LL CERTAINLY ALWAYS REMEMBER
A few days ago, thanks to Amazon and a kind gentleman named Ernest who had one to sell, I FINALLY became the proud owner of A Song to Remember on VHS - a little more than 56 years after I saw the actual movie. They say if something's good enough to want, it's good enough to wait for, and this is certainly true where this sublime movie and most treasured memory of my childhood is concerned. In 1946, at the age of 9, my well meaning parents (back home in Wales, U.K.) took me to see this movie, without telling me that their main reason was 'the hope that it would encourage me to put more effort in to my piano lessons'.To their dismay, they soon discovered that, in that respect, they had failed miserably because - after seeing this movie and being introduced to the life and beautiful music of Frederic Chopin, through the incredible combination of Cornel Wilde's good looks (and excellent acting) and the superb performance of the music itself by Jose Iturbi, I promptly came to the conclusion that if I couldn't play that well, then I didn't want to play at all. Not long afterwards, my long suffering piano teacher was relieved (in every sense of the word) of her duties. But from the moment I sat enraptured through that movie, I fell in love with Chopin and his music and made the vow that 'when I grow up, I'm going to go to Poland and listen to a Chopin recital in the country where it all began'.More than forty years later (and having moved to Canada in the meantime) I achieved that ambition and what a joy it was to hear this wonderful music played by a leading exponent of Chopin's music from the Warsaw Conservatory. My other ambition was to somehow 'acquire' this memorable movie for myself. But I found that to be easier said than done, as all my enquiries came up with an 'out of print' response. Then just over a week ago, I saw that Amazon did indeed have one for sale - 'used'. I knew it was a risk to fork out money for a product that I couldn't even be sure was in great condition. But I wanted this movie so much, that I 'boughtit' immediately, before anyone else could pounce on it.My movie arrived a few days later, just in time for it to be 'a special birthday gift to myself'.Today was my birthday and one of the biggest treats of my day was to curl up in comfort and watch A Song to Remember in my own home at long last.Oh what memories watching it brought back, and what joy is gave me to finally have this wonderful movie in my possession to play and watch for ever more. I am also happy to say that this 'used' tape turned out to be in superb condition, with its picture and sound as good as new. This is one happy movie owner and my thanks to Amazon and Ernest for finally making it possible for me to fulfil a lifelong dream. It means more to me than you would ever imagine!A Song to Remember made it a Birthday to Remember too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ninety seven transpiration and three percent inspiration!
Tracy is simply unbeatable in this vivid and personal portrait about the most famous American inventor . Despite several shortcomings through the film and a set of vignettes with no importance , the movie sustains its force .

5-0 out of 5 stars All Children Should See this Movie
What a heart warming picture.Spencer Tracy did an excellent job in this movie.Loved it from start to finish.I love all these 20th century Fox bios.Young Tom Edison was also very good. This movie teaches the charactor quality of "perseverance". A very safe and enjoyable movie for the children to see.Very homeschool friendly. You will love it!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Spencer Tracy as Edison the Greatest Inventor
"Edison, The Man," directed in 1940 by Clarence Brown, remains one of the best bio-pics from MGM's Golden Years.Spencer Tracy stars as Thomas Alva Edison, who looks back on his legendary career as the reluctant guest of honor at the 1929 Golden Jubilee of Light.Told in flashbacks, the film traces Edison's career from the time he arrived penniless in New York to his triumph with the incandescent electric light in 1879 when he lit the city by electricity. The act of invention has never been more interesting, as when Edison comes up with the idea for a talking machine. The story is necessarily episodic in nature, but Tracy's performance and narration hold the entire thing together, reaffirming his place as our greatest film actor."Edison, The Man" features Rita Johnson as Edison's future wife Mary, Lynne Overman as "Bunt" Cavatt, Charles Coburn as General Powell, and Henry Travers as Ben Els.The montage at the end of the film, where Edison ages as his many inventions fly by on the screen, is a nice reminder of why Edison was widely considered the smartest American who ever lived. His list of inventions certainly quantifies him as the most prolific scientist. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
This movie was pretty good. I liked the witch. She is my favorite character because she is a pretty bad villain and I like villains. The parts of the movie that I liked best were the parts with the Wizard and the Munchkins.Once Dorothy and the scarecrow, lion and tin man reach Oz, it gets very interesting. You finally get to see the place they've been following the yellow brick road for. It's cool.I am six.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Version of the Wizard of Oz yet
Known to all, this is the story of Dorothy Gale and herjourney to the magical land of Oz. She meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a cowardly lion who desperately needs courage. The most popular film of all time , seen by over a billion people. It's timelessness is proof enough of its value . Certainly flawed when scrutinized and written about for 56 years, but still most beloved. In 1998 rereleased on the big screen: magic. And admittedly the most important film of my life: As a child I was obsessed with the film and only a little less now.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Never Gets Old
"The Wizard Of Oz" is a film truly worthy of the title timeless. No matter how many times, you can't help but be amazed by the sense of wonder and inspiration this film creates. Even after 67 years, it's still one of the most impressive and uplifiting moments in cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but do not ask for the impossible
I will try not to repeat what other reveiwers have said, so I will be short about all the qualities of this miniseries: excellent actors, engrossing storyline, excellent reconstruction of the siege as it happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Although I just viewed the abridged version, I found it highly suspenseful and riveting. Otool and Strauss were exceptional--that's what made the drama so compelling. Each man was intensely resolved to achieve his goal, and neither would surrender to the other. Also, each hero was extremely human--sensitive and thoughtful--despite the pluck and resolve each had.
5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Masada Mini-series Available on 4 VHS!!
I bought my copy of the miniseries, MASADA. I just looked and I saw one copy from there. When I bought mine, I got it, factory sealed, from a seller called buy.com. I went to buy.com website and the movie is on back order but, hey, you've waited this long, right? I also see that www.moviesunlimited.com has it for sale; you will need: (item # 072787).I am looking to get mine put on DVD to preserve the video. I, too, remember watching it as a child and the indelible etching it left on my memory. I have watched all 394 minutes again as an adult and it is as huge and glorious as I remember it. I didn't even know an expurgated version exists - I can not imagine cutting even a minute from this perfect epic. It would be like cutting The "10 Commandments" or Homer. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Robin Williams stars as an English teacher who doesn't fit into the conservative prep school where he teaches, but whose charisma and love of poetry inspires several boys to revive a secret society with a bohemian bent. The script is well meaning but a little trite, though director Peter Weir (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Sound My Barbaric YAWP Over The Roofs Of The World
I used to love this Peter Weir movie and now sadly it seems far too idealistic and implausible to me. I wish it didn't. I've probably seen Dead Poet's Society a dozen times and while I still think it is a beautiful motion picture in its message about how the power of the written word as a tool for free thought is a life-changing force, I can't seem to find it in me to think it's possible that a teacher could have reached teenaged boys in quite that way. Well, I guess that's why we have films, so we can see things we wouldn't in life. All this said, I do believe Dead Poet's Society is a classic. If you haven't seen it, you probably should. It is an uplifting, often gloriously beautiful, always embraceable film with a solid cast that includes Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and living theatrical legend, Norman Lloyd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raises interesting questions
This film is superlative by every standard.Robin Williams does a brilliant job in his role as a semi-bohemian poetry teacher with a passion for challenging orthodoxy. As mentioned so many times by past reviewers, Ethan Hawke's performance is similarly powerful, as are those of the other boys.Sets and cinematography deserve praise too, for capturing the "feel" not only of the school but the era in which it is set.The script is superb as well.It captures all the angst felt by the young men as they begin to question the world they have been thrust into and their places in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Captain, my captain..."
The influx of teacher/student movies will never cease. That said there are those that succeed on every level like `A Beautiful Mind' or `Mr. Holland's Opus' and even `Dangerous Minds' to an extent. Then you have those that fail miserably. But this film is neither. It failed to move me in ways never done before, but it also carried enough weight to make the experience worth the time spent viewing it.`Dead Poets Society' is a film about being who you are despite what the rest of society wants you to be.It's about expressing yourself in the face of adversity. The idea of a bunch of male college students secretly sneaking off campus to read poetry is pretty lame and far fetched, but it's the ferocity in their eyes while in the class room that makes up for the plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Colonial Warfare In America"
An excellent film! This takes place at Fort Pitt(when Pittsburgh was a frontier town)in 1763 during Pontiac's War(a by-product of The French & Indian War). With a budget of 5 million dollars,DeMille puts a very good story together that is based on Neil Swanson's book "The Judas Tree".It is also the first time that I've seen the subject of indentured servitude addressed on film. The viewer also gets to see an appearance of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment(BlackWatch)and how they saved Fort Pitt.I would have liked to have seen more action, but the fighting scenes are adequate enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars PAULETTE AND GARY
Abby Hale (Paulette Goddard), a pretty English convict girl, is ordered deported as a potential slave to the American Colonies.Captain Holden (Gary Cooper) saves her from being auctioned off into slavery, and when she's captured by Indians and subjected to a slow and tortuous death, Holden appears in a flash of gunpowder smoke convincing the Indians that he's a god, so they relinquish Abby to him................THE UNCONQUERED was DeMille's 5 million dollar Technicolored celebration of Cooper's virility and Goddard's femininity and the American Frontier Spirit.Spectacularly stirring and full of fine action scenes, DeMille again screen-vitalised a chapter out of American history. One may say that he supplied both a boistrous and sensational delineation of the frontiersman's era with the full complement of DeMille devices, even to the famed bath sequence, a dip into the serial thrillers when the hero and heroine shoot the rapids to the the edge of a waterfall, and the staging of the battle of Fort Pitt that far outdoes any conflict that was ever dreamt up for a World's Fair carnival!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this movie!
OK...so I've been in love with James Garner since I was five years old (Maverick days). And yes, I love older men. This movie is an absolute favorite of mine. The chemistry between James Garner and Sally Field is terrific and it winds up being an old-fashioned romance. It doesn't get any better than this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe wanted to play GRUSHENKA in this movie, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV
This was the movie for which Marilyn Monroe wanted desperately
5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated.
It practically goes without saying that this Hollywood production is inadequate as an adaptation of a monumental novel. On the other hand, even when judged as an adaptation, "Brothers Karamazov" strikes me as superior to efforts to film similar weighty Russian novels such as "War and Peace" and "Dr. Zhivago."The elder Karamazov (Lee J. Cobb) and his four sons, including Yul Brynner, Richard Basehart, and William Shattner, are so sharply realized they have remained vivid in my memory for over four decades. The same goes for Maria Schell (whose alluring, enigmatic magnetism must have had the same effect on me as Garbo's persona is said to have had on audiences in the '30's) and Claire Bloom, the two women vying for Brynner's affections. Finally, credit the evocative score of Bronislaw Kaper ("On Green Dolphin Street") and the efficient yet imaginative direction of Richard Brooks (responsible for the equally underrated "Looking for Mr. Goodbar").
5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Greed and Everthing You'd Want!
Yul Brynner was a great actor and this movie shows a more sensitive side of his charactor than his cowboy flicks. It also contemplates the issues of God, conscience, good and evil. I didn't read the book,I'm judging this movie on it's own merit. It is one of my favorite "old movies", you see multi-dimensional sides of the charactors as they deal with love, greed, family conflicts and jealousies. I think the actors play their parts well and you can relate to why the charactors respond in their ways to each other. I don't think Yul got as much acclaim as an actor and leading man as was deserved. He was the first man to make bald, sexy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
I love Miguel Cervantes Story telling of Don Quiotxe De la Mancha. This has great songs. Rent is another one of my favorite musical turned movies but they are hardly alike. Rent is about the bohemian village, man of la mancha is about early spanish inquisition, but i do beilive they have a small relation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Story was good, acting good, singing??? What singing?
Sorry, if one is casting for a MUSICAL movie, one should actually cast actors who can SING, not just actors who have big names. Sophia Loren couldn't carry a tune to save her life.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Heaven and Dulciena!
This movie does an excellent job of portraying both Don Quixote and his author Cervantes who wrote this masterpiece while in prison. On top of all that, its a musical/comedy of epic proportions. ... Read more
