4-0 out of 5 stars Yeaaa! I found it!
On a June evening in 1968 I was awakened by my dad, a Marine Raider and one of the Chosen Few, at ten o'clock PM, that's 2200, to watch The DI... five hours before I was to report to the Armed Forces Induction Center, Oakland, Calif. I won't ever forget that movie session with my dad, and as one other person commented, ya never forget your DIs, mine were SSgt Gonzales, SSgt Rogers, and Cpl Sexton.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding work, semper fI
All I can say is amen to the rest of the reviews on this great movie!! and Agree wholeheartly to the question raised by almost everyone, "Why hasn't this movie as well as a few others been released on DVD" I am also a marine VET, the attention to detail to this movie made so long ago "1957 I believe" is superb for the time it was released. I have a vhs copy and only wish I could get it on DVD also.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST MILITARY MOVIE OF ALL TIME
I just like to say this is the best marine movie of all time i cant believe its not on dvd if someone knows how to get it on a dvd it would be a top seller i would buy five of them in case they stoped producing this movie again lol ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This movie is a joke!
I enjoyed reaching all of the books in this series, but I'm sorry to say I can't say the same for the movies."Love Comes Softly" wasn't an exact duplicate of the corresponding book but at least the basic storyline was right for the most part."Love's Enduring Promise" concentrated on about 5 pages' worth of the entire book, and even screwed that up."Nathan Willie LaHaye"???Hello.....Nathan was Willie's OLDER brother, and he did NOT have a little brother named Mattie who froze to death - his OLDER SISTER died in childbirth after marrying the schoolteacher (BEFORE Missie was old enough to teach school in the first place)! In the book, Grant Thomas was only "present" in the story when he asked Missie's mother if he could take her for a drive, and was never heard from again except when Missie asked her mother how she could tell him she only wanted to be friends.Furthermore, Grant was the son of a local businessman, NOT a railroad heir.I realize that all moviemakers use poetic license, but ruining a perfectly good story to create an unbelieveable one is STUPID!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, within what it is supposed to be
Come on folks, this is a, "Little House on the Prairie," Michael Landon-ish, light-weight story meant for little girls to enjoy.Within what it was meant to be, that is, being what it was created to be, at that level and with the goals of production, acting and directing being what they were, within that overallrealm of expectation, meant to appeal to unsophisticated 13 year old girls who thought they might be experiencing something they could relate to, with which they could identify, being that much only, then this little production was, in reality a huge success. The parameters of what a show is attempting to be must be considered in any evaluation. Most grownups would have a difficult time sitting through this piece of work. That, in and of itself, demonstrates that the end result didn't do for non-targeted audience demographic groups exactly what it was not meant to do, that is it did not entertain the wrong group for which it was targeted. Anytime any type, or genre of any movie that is being reviewed is evaluated, the reviewer that simply says that they didn't like it, without realizing he or she was not supposed to be enthralled with it, then they have not shown any understanding of how movies are objectively reviewed. An example:I, personally, could not take, "The Exorcist."But, but..., if reviewed as a piece of work within its category, the category within which it was intended, I must come to the conclusion that it was very well made and did a great job of doing what was intended for the exact group for which it was marketed and targeted. My not liking that particular type of movie is irrelevant.I have heard Roger Ebert give many movies the benefit of a review that was other-than-self oriented. You may not care for, say,Westerns, but there are some Westerns that are, for Westerns, being what they were supposed to be, are amazing films.Any film "boring" any one of us cannot be a valid platform from which a movie reviewcan be proffered then expected to be respected by others.I have done it myself. The film, "The Right Stuff,"was harder for me to watch than almost any other film I have ever seen. But, it was very well done, in almost every aspect.Evaluating the quality of filmmaking, and the personal rating of how one liked or did not like any film, well made or not, they are two very different types of approaches.
2-0 out of 5 stars Yawn...
I was a huge fan of the books growing up, and a lover of the period and Jannette Oke's books. I had greatly enjoyed the first movie and was eagerly looking forward to watching the next in the series. Well, I just finished -- and could hardly stop from yawning while I watched!

2-0 out of 5 stars almost as exciting as watching golf on tv
ok, i have an admission to make: i have always said this is one of the most boring movies ever made, but i never actually saw it til now. not that i didnt pay my way into the theater because i did. but i fell asleep after 20 minutes or so and never actually SAW the movie. now i have. worse movies have won the oscar: "gandhi", "kramer vs kramer", "the english patient", maybe a few more. but i dont think theres ever been a duller movie. that said, i gave it 2 stars instead of one to honor the all-too-brief shots of dennis christopher who was dreamycreamy back then, but is only on screen about 5 minutes. frankly, i found the two "heroes" to be a pair of self-centered religious zealots, and prigs to boot. and god, i loathe that vangelis music that played constantly for the decade after the movies release. my gawd, this thing beat "reds" for a best picture oscar?!?!? maybe i shall go back and take away the second star ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide-Screen Finally!
Before this wide-screen edition of CHARIOTS OF FIRE was released, I was extremely reluctant to recommend buying this DVD. Now that it is out, and that the sound has been made crisper, there is nothing that should prevent anyone from buying this product.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chariots of Fire
What an amazing film! This is the story of a real olympics and the participants who represented Great Britain in track. The main characters are really well developed and include Abraham who is attending Cambridge University and besides being a stellar student of law has been graced with the ability to sprint. He is Hebrew in a Christian world son to a financier. He enrolls a coach named Mr. Masanbini who admits he can't put in what god left out but none the less agrees to train the young Ben.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent And Gritty Crime Drama!
With so many reviews already posted here on amazon, I really don't think there is any more that I could add, other than to say this is an amazing crime-thriller. From the very beginning, to the very end this is the quintessential mob film of all time. The story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) has already been discussed, I would just like to add that if there is anyone who has not seen this classic, do so. More importantly, it belongs in your DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars These are working guys, living it up and "Earning" at all costs.
Scorcese & Pileggi's masterpiece on the life of Henry Hill as a Brooklyn NY mob wise-guy is great film. While not my favorite Martin Scorsese movie it is a stunning achievement, and one of his very best movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best film of the 90's
GoodFellas is Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, following the life of a gangster named Henry Hill. It charts his way up from working at a mob-controlled cabstand to becoming a member of the gang, and eventually turning to the witness protection program to save his life. The movie is full of unforgettable moments, particularly the famous "Do you think I'm funny" scene. Joe Pesci steals every scene he's in as the murderous psycopath Tommy, and rightfully won the best supporting actor Oscar. This movie contains what may be the best movie sequence ever made: Henry, while high on cocaine, driving around town running a mixture of normal and mob errands (e.g. In narration, he says: I had to stop by Sandy's place to mix the cocaine then get home and check the tommato sauce for dinner...) while being followed by a helicopter. The scene is shot extremely haphazardly, making you feel as though your'e in Henry's place. This movie's greatness cannot be expressed in words; you have to see it for yourself. Also recommended: Miller's Crossing, Casino, Taxi Driver, and The Godfather. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gritty Police Procedural Starring New York City
"There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them." That's the end of the movie, and it's a famous line. The start of the movie shows people going about their lives in New York City. Waking up, catching the subways, working, going home. And, for one young woman late at night shown in her dark apartment through window blinds, being murdered.
4-0 out of 5 stars "There are eight million stories in the naked city"
"The Naked City" was released in 1948, and Barry Fitzgerald stars as Irishman, Det. Lt. Dan Muldoon.New York City is the scene, and a young woman has been murdered in the bathtub, creating sensational headlines for every newspaper and scandal sheet in the city.Muldoon and his detectives scour the mean streets of the city searching for the murderer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent noir police crime drama
Jules Dassin's meritorious 1948 flick "The Naked City" was beautifully and ambitiously filmed in the streets of New York by respected cinematographer William Daniels. The movie was based on an investigation conducted by the NY police department surrounding the murder of an attractive blonde model Jean Dexter. She was discovered by her housekeeper drowned in her bathtub after being rendered unconscious by chloroform. The housekeeper revealed that Ms. Dexter had been involved with a middle aged gentleman named Mr. Henderson.

4-0 out of 5 stars "jaws" on the western plains
this is another of charles bronson's 70's westerns that tried to do something different, and it works if you let it. blasted by everyone when it came out it really is a good take on "jaws" and "moby dick" in the west. bronson is wild bill hickock, slowly being eatten away by the clap, and having visions of the white buffalo of the title and it's coming for him so he starts looking for it. will sampson is crazy horse who must kill the beast to help his daughter(killed by the anamial)to get to heaven. this has some great scenery and some fine action scenes,so if you like bronson or westerns that have a little food for thought check this one out.

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) 4-0 out of 5 stars Erratic Sound Problem
This is a wonderful movie which is why I replaced my VCR tape copied from TV by buying it as a DVD.Unfortunately, the sound is a major problem. Every time the scenes changed from dialogue to music or action such as thundering horses, calamitous weather, etc. the volume rose to a shreiking crescendo. It required constant volume adjustment to be able to watch the film comfortably.I don't recall this being such a glaring problem on the VCR copy. Perhaps sound is now mixed for the younger people who suffer hearing loss from the music (I use that term loosely) of their times, but if so, I don't see how they can make out the dialogue. This problem is not limited to just this DVD of course, but it spoiled an otherwise beautiful film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, the battle scene!
This is one instance where both the original film in the thirties and the modern one are excellent - especially, in both the battle scene. It is easy to critique these movies for historical inaccuracies, but the gist is right on the money. This was a major and a meaningful victory for the United States and January 8th was a national holiday until the time of the Civil War. This last victory confirmed the US as a truly independent nation -our "Second War of Independence" - whereas beforehand the Europeans had ignored international law in dealings with us. See Robin Reilly's The British at the Gates - although the battle was fought after the signing of the peace treaty, the treaty was deliberated worded so the Brits could keep N.O. for a naval station, if they had won. They hesitated after landing because of an audacious (i.e., courageous) assault by the citizens of the city; their artillery, before the main attack, was blown to pieces by American guns; and their own assault - by Wellington's Heroes - was stopped cold by a collection of militiamen, Indians, civilians - and pirates. (Aside: one British author on the subject was miffed because an American had described Pakenham's wife, on board ship, being horrified on seeing his body returned in a barrel of rum - "Pakenham was not married!"Yes.... but it was his mistress who was horrified!) Watch the movie and be proud again to be an American!

About 1959, I would have been 8 years old, my great aunt Louise saw "The Buccaneer" and had a stroke. She had a stroke each time she saw it.She saw it 5 more times and died.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big, Lavish Hollywood Epic
I used to love these types of big, bold, colorful costume epics as a kid and I still like them today. It's been a number of years since I've seen The Buccaneer but it was always one of my favorites.Directed by Anthony Quinn the film stars Charlton Heston as General Andrew Jackson and Yul Brynner as pirate Jean LaFitte and is sent against the backdrop of the war of 1812.Lafitte and his pirates control a local and strategically placed Island near New Orleans. While he refrains from attacking American vessels he's still not in the good graces of Jackson.Jackson is faced with a dire dilemma...the British are massing a large force and planning to attack New Orleans and the American forces are vastly outnumbered. They turn to ally with LaFitte.Lafitte's men want them to side with England as they think they will certainly win, but LaFitte gets assurances from Jackson that his men will be pardoned if they aid the Americans. This deal is complicated when one of the Pirates under LaFittes command attacks an American ship and kills everyone except a boy who escapes.Even though LaFitte new nothing about the attack he accepts responsibility.

I bought this movie, because a family member had seen it years ago and liked it.I watched it once and it was very funny there were several sexual referances in the movie coming from Ann-Margret but you can tell that by the cover.Funny as is was, at timesyou felt like you were watching the same things over and over again.I wouldn't watch it with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Villain 1979

Ride along with a horse named Whisky and an allstar cast featuring Paul Lynde (1926-1982) as THE VILLAIN plots to outsmart handsome with slapstick determination . A raucous western spoof that proves you cant judge a cowboy by the color of his hat . High Quality Transfer . Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars You would enjoy this movie if. . .
If you like good clean humor, you will love this movie. It is so funny and also entertaining. It's about a cowboy and his horse, and the horse almost talks. It's also about a seven shot, six-shooter (can you believe it). It comes in handy at just the right time. It's also about a naive cowboy, who does dumb things and doesn't even know they're dumb. So, for an entertaining time, purchase this dvd. It's well worth the money, and the time spent watching it. I'm sure you'll love it as much as we did. Happpy watching!!!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Time.
Even though most high schools in the country have very little resemblance to the high school in TEACHERS, there is a savage inequality that exists in how our schools in the United States are funded. This realization didn't take place until the early 1980s and TEACHERS was made and released just as the debate over unequal education was starting to rage.
4-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD?!?!?!?!?!?!
They do not even show this movie on cable...I have been waiting patiently for this to come out. Especially since I and pretty my whole graduation class (Franklin Heights High School) is in this movie. The movie was filmed at the old Central High School in Columbus, Ohio. A casting call went out to all seniors, 17 years and older in the early fall of 1983. We went there four hours a day, three days a week, for about six weeks, it was awesome.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's closer to being a good film than a bad one . . .
Most of the other comments, pro and con, have their points.I agree with many of them, pro and con; it's a matter of degree in most cases. And that in turn is a matter of taste or opinion; "beauty in the eye of the beholder" and so on.

The hard work of hours and hours during school, after school, weekends. But in the end it was well worth it. I can watch this movie for years and years to come and just remember..I miss my highschool years and the best part of my highschool years was SING. When this movie was filmed they filmed some of it in my school in New Utrect High School. Before the movie was out, they invited us to a special screening where I met Peter Dobson and some of the writers and Lorraine Bracco. I have autographs and they autographed my soundtrack too. 5-0 out of 5 stars "You're not Myrna Loy!"
I LOVE this movie. What I want to know is, do people still buy VHS tapes?? Why in the world this film is not on DVD is beyond me. My favorite part is the promotional short Daisy did for Swan studios where she dances and sings in outer space; beautiful cinematography here. That black and white sequence gets to me every time I see it and is in stark contrast to the brilliant color footage in the rest of the film. The musical score is haunting and subtle but the Daisy numbers are all up-beat and Hollywood glam at it's best. Any Natalie Wood fan should see this film. Christopher Plummer is outstanding and gives one of the best performances of his career, IMO. Though I highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves show-biz "rise-to-stardom" stories, I suggest you wait for the DVD to come out. I have stopped buying tapes; they're antique technology and simply do not last. We can only hope Amazon passes along the word that there is a buying public chomping at the bit to buy the DVD of Inside Daisy Clover.

5-0 out of 5 stars so bad it's good
Despite being uneven and overdramatic in some spots, thismovie is absolutely intriguing. The first fifteen minutes are basically pointless, but the rest is fabulous. The characters are so complex that at the end you're still wondering who was the bad guy and who was the good guy.Natalie Wood as Daisy Clover managaes to look beautiful even though she looks like a frumpy teenager.Roddy McDowall is the producer's snippy assistant.Katherine Bard plays Mrs. Swan, who tells Daisy "your husband never could resist a charming boy."Robert Redford looks extremely handsome as bisexual actor Wade Lewis (my favorite scene is when he talks to Daisy in the beautiful white bedroom). But the piece de resistance is Christopher Plummer as the ambiguous studio producer Raymond Swan. That guy is truly an amazing actor. The scenes he has with Daisy are my favorite (the swimming pool and beach house). The memorable script, the main actors, and the gorgeous, glamorous 1930s Hollywood setting make this movie worth seeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, But Charming
I watched this last night. Stayed up waayyy too late. What a movie. Natalie Wood is amazing. Flopping around on the boardwalk . . . an awkward, strong and oddly attractive waif-like character, barefoot, in dirty clothes with crazy hair, that at one point she cuts, instead of combing. Ruth Gordon is lovely. Robert Redford is convincing. And you always wonder what the heck is going on in Christopher Plummer's mind. Creepy. Generally, things end up on a sad note, this ain't Singing In The Rain, and I did get sick of hearing the song, Wood's character kept singing over and over, and not very well, about how she's gonna be a big star. But everything else is wonderful. A great movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Film Adaptation of the Classic Novel
This 1945 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novella is more that likely the best adaptation one will ever see. This may seem to be a big statement, but Albert Lewin's direction along with Harry Stradling Sr.'s Oscar winning Cinematography for 1946, appears almost flawless when comparing the classic novel with the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars "5" for the movie, "1" for no DVD
This is one the best films of all time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Lost Meaning of Evil and Terror.
With the exception of the fact that Sybil Vane is reduced from a stage actress to a club singer, this movie actually holds to the book quite well. In an age where horror movies revolve around the absurd overuse of blood and effects, and evil is portrayed as someone who just carries the label and dresses in black, this movie carries the true meaning of evil and terror. (Notably lost in modern times!) As in the book, we meet Lord Henry (played most convincingly by George Sanders). While he does have some redeeming points, he basically represents the devil. He is more of an observer, and he considers the common behavior of people beneath him. And as comically vicious as he gets, like the devil he never really tells outright falsehoods. One perfect example is when he expresses that women represent morality over mind and men represent mind over morals. Well, we then meet the young Dorian who is having his portrait painted. Lord Henry plays the devil and tells Dorian youth is only temporary and even if unintentionally tempts and leads Dorian into making a pact with evil. (He'll remain young while the picture ages.) Dorian then falls in love with Sybil Vane. And they plan to marry. But Lord Henry again plays the devil and gives Dorian advice that SOUNDS good, but will lead to Sybil's death when carried through. (Like the devil, Lord Henry can tempt, but NOT FORCE Dorian to do anything!) After Sybil's death, Lord Henry shows a redeeming moment when he is concerned over Dorian. But the harm is done. Dorian is now on his way to degeneration. It is not the pact itself that leads to Dorian's degeneration, but his vanity that leads him to a cold indifference to the needs of others. (While this behavior was comical in Lord Henry, it appears quite disturbing in Dorian.) Without blood or effects, this movie is really scarey as we gradually see Dorian degenerate into evil. Despite what action movies tell us, the true meaning of evil is when we become a prisoner of our own vanity and we desire to satisfy ourselves no matter what the cost to others. Dorian makes this clear when he says: "I enjoy scandals about others, but scandals about me do not interest me. I find them boring." In a moment of disturbing terror, Dorian murders the uncle of the Gladys (whom he now loves). And in his arguably most evil moment, he becomes the tempter. While he asks for Alan Campbell's help in disposing of the body, he tempts but again doesn't force. (And this will lead to Campbell's suicide. The tempted has become the tempter!) But Sybil's brother is still out there and he wants revenge for the death of his sister. We heard of Adrian Singleton earlier when Basil expressed his fear over the degeneration of Dorian's friends, and we see him as a disturbing eccentric who interestingly carries reason. Jim's death is creepily ambiguous. Did Dorian set up the hunting party in hopes that Jim would walk into a bullet, or did Jim's desire for revenge lead to his downfall? We don't know, but we DO know that for this evil to have fallen on Jim, Jim had to consent at least in part to it when he persued the evils of revenge. (Something the utterly stupid 'Time to Kill' couldn't figure out.) Moving on, Dorian has defeated all his enemies, but he just can't live with himself anymore. (An ending above and beyond action movies that have a hero kill his enemies, fall in love, and live happily ever after!) Well, Dorian breaks his pact with evil and pays a HIGH price. Not only is this movie a phenomenal remake of the book itself, but it also reminds us of the REAL meaning of evil and terror. And as a bonus, it shows the shortcomings of modern movies that just don't get it. If you liked the book, you'll love the movie! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie has a lot of heart
This is one of those movies that never gets old.
5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN OSCAR MET COOPER....A TIMELESS TRIUMPH!
For those who wonder why it took so long for SERGEANT YORK to make his journey to DVD, all you have to be familiar with is how AWFUL this movie looked when TCM ran it on TV. Like so many older Warner pictures, it needed to be restored, and over and over again, the grand old studio founded by the brothers Warner is restoring is glittering gems for DVD to look and sound terrific.
5-0 out of 5 stars Took them long enough!!!

Editorial Review

Michael Radford's adaption of George Orwell's foreboding literary premonition casts John Hurt and Suzanna Hamilton as lovers who must keep their courtship secret.Aside from criminalizing sex and interpersonal relationships, the ruling party in their country Oceania both fabricates reality and reconstructs history for the sake of oppressing the masses. They brainwash their citizens via large, propaganda-spewing TV monitors installed in their living rooms, which also inspect everyone's activities. Hurt and Hamilton are among the few we see desperately trying to fight the system by keeping control of their thoughts and beliefs. While the atmosphere becomes a bit too stifling at times, the images are quite striking with their muted colors and dilapidated sets. In an interesting bit of casting, Richard Burton costars (in his final role) as a government agent who surreptitiously exposes Hurt to the ideas of resistance. Unlike many like-minded films, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Humm it did not happen in 1984, but how about now???
Look at current events an our culture of fear. Look at them. This movie is great, but read the book 1st if you can.If not at least watch this movie and think about it.It is really scarry when you think about it and how did the author know ahead so far. While you are at it read brave new world. It is great too and will make you think too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good production, but absolutely pointless
I should say first that this should be a good movie, at least on paper.John Hurt and Richard Burton turn in solid performances, and everything about the production -- set design, costumes, etc. -- looks just as it should. But there is something lacking in this adaptation that makes it pale compared to the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome movie, but...

Editorial Review

Writer-director Robert Rossen and character actors Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge (in her film debut) took home Oscars (for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) for this excellent adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Crawford stars as Willie Stark, a charismatic populist Southern politician (inspired by the real Louisiana Governor Huey Long) who belies his "man of the people" roots as he ruthlessly maneuvers, lies, and deals his way into the halls of power. John Ireland is his right-hand man, Jack Burden, a newsman turned political flack who hangs on to Stark'
