Editorial Review

The legendary distance runner Steve Prefontaine blazed across tracks and into America's consciousness before meeting a tragic death in an auto accident at the age of 24.In this tribute to "Pre," narrated by writer Ken Kesey, a number of his contemporaries speak movingly of him as an athlete and a person. After setting high school running records in his native Oregon, Prefontaine went on to the University of Oregon, where as a freshman he began to dominate the American track scene and appeared on the cover of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This was my favorite of the (I believe?) three Prefontaine movies out there. "Without Limits" and "Prefontaine" are both good Hollywood/drame type movies, and while all three stay true to Pre's story, "Fire on the Track" is much more moving. It tells the story documentary-style with real footage and interviews with those who knew Pre best, tied together with strong narration and driven ultimately by the raw story of Prefontaine. If you're a runner and looking for motivation, or a runner/non-runner looking to learn about one of the greatest American athletes of all time, look no further than to "Fire on the Track."

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I highly recommend this movie to ANYONE who needs inspiration or motivation. Perhaps you are in sales and need a little extra drive to get over the rejection of a lost sale, etc. This movie will tell you to never quit no matter what your odds.
2-0 out of 5 stars A very long run for a short slide....
Very little actual running here. Mostly a Nike commercial. Lots of silly interviews that don't add anything. Watch one of the movies, instead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Memories
Worthwhile memories of skating from top-notched performers.A must have for figure skating fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Performances/Bad Audio
This is a great collection of performances by some of history's greatist skaters. If you can get past thebeginning,I'm sure you'll enjoy this video. An awful, loud and annoying announcer is heard during the first couple of performances with the music being very low.Afterwards, things pick up.Former skater,Jo Jo Starbuck does a very nice job commenting.Video quality is very good, especially for the age of some of the footage. All performances are firt rate.A nice surprise for me was a routine by Rosalyn Sumners, who was not listed on the video package. She is one of my all-time favorites. This is a must have for all long time figure skating fans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad audio track
The performances included are good, BUT one CAN NOT HEAR THE MUSIC that the performers are skating to.The music is at a very low volume with some female talking very loudly over it telling that they just did a "triple something".That amateur commentary was not necessary and is very distrubing. The audio "engineer" (if you can call him that) and the producer of this video should go back to high school and enroll in freshman audio-visual! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars REAL DREAMS OFBASKETBALL HOPEFULS
I love this movie. It's a true look at what is really going on for two young kids trying to do something with a talent God has given them.A up and down look at a journey thats isn't always as easy as some NBA players make it seem to be.A real look at how it takes more than just good stats to make it in a Big Man's Game.
3-0 out of 5 stars Criterion Collection - Missing Something!!!
My family has ownd the Hoops Dreams VHS for quite sometime and we were thrilled to hear that it would be coming out on DVD. We purchased the Criterion collection and watched the story as attentively as we did the first time. We are heavily involved in youth sports, including AAU basketball. We have even give the VHS to several kids as gifts. This movie has a message that allows kids to learn by example. Those hoop dreams are fun to have but in reality, there are so few who ever make it to the NBA. This documentary shows kids that working hard on the court can guarantee a free private high school education and then a college education. It's not always about getting to the NBA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great documentary
very inspiring documentary not only for aspiring basketball players but for anyone with a dream. Besides being so real and powerful, I think this is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Beautifully shot in the projects of chicago, the feel and look of the film was what I though made Hoop Dreams so real. The film was shot in analog video and then transfered to 35mm, and the editing they did is really amazing. They had years worth of footage and could have made this a 30 hour film, but they put it together nicely. Anyway shots like a man playing ball with his son and then walking away to go buy drugs make this a great documentary ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An All Time Great Movie
Before the glut of Chopper Shows on cable TV reduced the world of motorcycling to a pinhole of grouchy, sleeveless, bad-boy "Bikers" packing an attitude, there was a movie about true Motorcyclists.
5-0 out of 5 stars In any motorcycle lovers collection
A dated documentary of motorcyle racing in America. You cant call yourself a motorcycle enthusist without this in your collection. If you know where each of these genre's of bike racing are today then you can see we've come a long way and that while NASCAR may be America's motorsport we have as rich a tradition in the motorcycle racing as any country even though Harley cant hang much to my dismay.
5-0 out of 5 stars On Any Sunday

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Reel" Arnold
Bodybuilding used to be a beautiful sport. There were a few guys that maybe weighed close to 250lbs but they still had lines, proportions, and symmetry. Nowadays the sport is filled with guys who weigh 300+ and they're only 5'11". In a word, they look absolutely ridiculous. Now I wouldn't go down to Venice Beach and tell them that unless I really wanted to know what my butt smelled like, but there really is no sense of style about the sport anymore. In fact, I think the last time bodybuilding was a thing of real beauty and art was probably in 1983. I think as soon as Frank Zane walked off the stage for the last time, bodybuilding just became a freak show.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is worth the 10 bucks,
I saw this when it first came out in video. It is pretty cool seeing again after many years. It is worth the money. Also, if you can find an old copy of his "Education of a Bodybuilder" that is an interesting read as well.

The definitive surf movie, this 1966 documentary by Bruce Brown is beautifully shot and thrilling to see in its portrait of youthful freedom on the world's shores. Brown followed two surfers around the globe in their quest for the perfect wave, finding it eventually on a remote beach far from home. The narration by "Big Kahuna Brown" cuts through the reverence a bit, being cheeky in tone. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
This is a very enjoyable documentary. Ordinarily, I don't watch movies a second time. But this one is so good, I purchased it. This film follows two surfers from 1960s America as they travel around the world in search of the perfect wave. They are gentlemen. It is interesting to see the world welcome them -- Americans from a kinder, much less-vulgar era. Even though it is now forty years old, the production value is high. The soundtrack, commentary, and beautiful scenery all contribute to a very well-made film. Forty years later, people continue to buy this movie.

Bruce Brown's 1966 somewhat dated documentary follows the exploits of two California surfers Mike and Robert as they travel round the globe following the summer and searching for surfing nirvana.

4-0 out of 5 stars surfing history
This review gets 4 stars for the surfing enthusiast.A documentary about the history and birth of surfing.Focusing much of the film on the older days of surfing & the evolution of the surfboard.Does include some contemporary surfing but not enough for 5 stars.I found that the history told in this film is enlightening.Only a surfer or surfing enthusiast would give this film 4 stars otherwise the rating is about 2 or 3 stars.Don't expect to see a lot of contempoary footage because there isn't much of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get for loved ones
This is a really great movie.I suggest you buy it for loved ones, just anybody that missed it on PBS.I happened to see it on PBS and am sure it will play again as a re-run but if you want an all around complete history of surfing, this is the best you will find.Nothing better to do than watch a surf video about the history of surfing. If you love old school surfing (Longboarding) or have been swept into the summer lul use this video to get you amped before a session.Cause we all know to surf often you have to longboard most of the summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for young kids that want to play better hockey
I purchased this video for my son who is 10. As Wayne is his favorite player it was not a problem to get him to watch a normally boring subject, "training". The step by step insruction by Wayne and the playersand Dr Wenger was easy for my son to follow and kept his intrest level highthroughout the video. This is a great tool to get your kids in shape toplay at thier peak level. The additional footage added at the end of thetape showing Waynes career highlites from his youth to his last game was aplesant surprise and really brings home just how great he was,a CLASS ACT. ... You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by thishourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: theUnited States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs.Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kidsmolded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympicgolds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, includingBrooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (whouttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Story of "Miracle of Ice"
For those of you who saw the movie, Miracle, this is a great follow up with the real players and coaches. It covers every game the USA hockey played to win the gold medal. As Al Michals says in the film, "Everyone forgets that the US team had to win one more game after beating the Russians."With interviews with the players from both teams, you really get a sense of how much impact there was from a hockey game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Documentary, but I need the whole game
This was probably the greatest sports upset ever (at least American). No need to rehash what others have said, except for I want this game, the gold medal final, and medal ceremony on DVD.Every anniversary I check to see if it came out. The 20th and 25th anniversaries have past, and I'm not sure it's ever going to come out. This game brings a tear to my eye, because it was so amazing. It shows the true passion of sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Believe In Miracles? Yes!
Greetings, hockey fans across the United States, Canada and the outside countries of all the world. If anyone had been there or remember the time and place when the moment effect everone in site. I'm referring to the moment when Team U.S.A. defeat Team Soviet Union on February 22, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York (13th Winter Olympic Games). Now, I never saw the game when the "moment" happened, because I was only 3 months old. But, as I've grown up during my teen-age years I've seen the clip of when Team U.S.A. scored the go-ahead goal and the famous broadcast call by Al Michaels saying "Do You Believe In Miracles? Yes!" line on television. Now, as an adult that's probably the only hockey moment that I always enjoyed remembering. Who knew that these 20 American college kids with different backgrounds would bond so well as a team. Not only to beat team Soviet Union, but taking home the gold medal and revitalize the hope of the United States in general. I liked the documentry and I'm glad to have it for a DVD collector's item. My final thought would be a token of gratitude for the late head coach Herb Brooks, assistant coach Craig Patrick and the 20 American players to show that anything is possible. That's a true inspiration for me and for everyone else who remember the "Mircle On Ice". Take care and have a nice day. Bye! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Recapp of Olympic glories!
This was a good recapp of famous scenes from the Olympics. The video highlights how a lot of the Olympic traditions began and how the modern Olympics were restarted. It takes you through three hours of the greatest Olympic moments.I was a little dissappointed that we didn't hear the orginal commentary from the games, along with Bud Greenspan. It also didn't show enough of some of the more famous Olympians - there was not much on Greg Louganis or Jesse Owins, or Nadia Comaneci. Overall I liked this video but I was a little dissappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who screwed who?
Just one comment, as far as the comment 'Bret screwed Bret' goes, many people are connecting that with his move to WCW. It wasn't a move that helped him, even he says WCW had no direction but lest we forget, Bret was TOLD by Vince to get the contract from them, as he couldn't honour the contract he was offered by the WWE. See that, he was TOLD by the man to do so. 5-0 out of 5 stars bret hart did get screwed
This was a great documentary. i bought before it had even gotten a distribution deal in this country and long before the 18 months after segment was added.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Controversial Story, But Is It Being Honest
I do not believe that Vince Mcmahon and Bret Hart are being totally honest in this, it gives you a backstage look at the WWF (WWE now), Vince Mcmahon i respect, no matter what he does, especially now, because he has kept wrestling with us. I think the Ironic part about this, is that this was made during the time that WCW was threating to put WWF out of business and yet 4 years later, Vince Mcmahon bought WCW, and a few months after this released in 1998, Raw began beating Nitro.

Once upon a time, a boy named Michael Jordan lived in Wilmington, North Carolina. Young Michael dreamt of becoming a professional basketball player. He began by participating in drop-in games with his brother, although at first he could not beat the older, heavier, more experienced sibling. As time went on, though, something grew inside of this child, a will and determination to beat anyone and anything that stood in the way of his success on the court. Playing basketball for his high school team, Jordan won a scholarship to the University of North Carolina. It was there that he first gave the world a glimpse of his greatness. Read more

I watched this movie during my first year of doing graduate study. It really moved me. Not only it tells us the story of how Michael achieve his greatness, but also how we can come back to achieve even more great accomplishments.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!
Being the MJ fan that I am, I have seen quiet a lot of movies about Jordan, and really I must say that this is one of the best, it has all those moves that just make MJ the great player that he is, I mean the way he moves with the ball, its just amazing, and unlike some other movies, this one doesnt waste long time on people talking, but shows what MJ is all about BASKETBALL.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid homage to a trailblazing ballplayer
This film doesn't back even a quarter inch from being a documentary of a great Jewish ballplayer. The opening theme song is "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in Yiddish. It sets the tone for the whole film in perfect fashion.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional documentary
I think this is a truly exceptional documentary on many different levels.First, it tells the story of one of the best baseball players in history, who often goes unrecognized for his skills.I consider myself a big baseball fan, especially in the history of baseball and stars of the past.Yet before this movie, I knew very little about Hank Greenberg.Despite being one of the best hitters at that time, Greenberg isn't talked about very often. This DVD gets his story out, and shows how dominant of a ball player he was.3-0 out of 5 stars Important Ballplayer for many reasons.
Hank Greenberg seemed like a pretty decent fellow and a whale of a ballplayer.Like many, he lost his prime years fighting those jerks in the Pacific. No telling how good his career number would have been if he could have been back in the states poking at the pill.Even with that handicap he still played in three World Series and won 2 MVP awards. This move does a pretty good job of documenting his life, but it seems to define him too much by his religion.Greenberg wasn't even a religious person, but the film continues to go back to the subject.I'm sure that he found discrimination along the way, but when you see the actual footage of him interviewed in 1983, you get the impression that he would be very uncomfortable with his life being told through that lens.He seems too no nonsense for that. It's interesting when he collides with rookie Jackie Robinson in 1947, and offers him encouragement. It's really a poetic moment in baseball history.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I ONLY WISH THIS HAD BEEN ON THE DVD SET!!!
It's too bad that this program IS NOT part of the DVD package either by itself or on the BONUS disc. Such a shame!!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE STUNTS & THE MAKING OF "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK"
This video was amazing! The stunts were top draw, and the behind the scenes footage was class! I would recomend this vid to everyone as its entertaining, funny and more to the point educational! May I please make a point to George Lucas & Steven Spielberg. If you both have similar footage of the other two indy films could you please produce the same kind of videos? Or perhaps make a stunts and behind the scenes video of Indy 4!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
A behind the scenes double feature. Two looks at the blockbuster film Raiders of the Lost Ark.The first concentrates on the history of movie stunts as well as the stunts of Raiders. The parallels are interesting and give a perspective on the movie's place in action filmmaking history.I doubt, for instance, that most moviegoers recognized Indy's escape under the moving truck as an homage to John Ford's Stagecoach. This first feature is narrated by Harrison Ford. The second feature is a well made and in-depth look at the making of Raiders.Good interviews with cast and crew including Ford, Lucas, and Spielberg.Plenty of coverage of Spielberg's manner behind the camera. We watch an energetic and childlike Spielberg create a massive blockbuster. We're allowed peaks at the making of almost all scenes in the film.As Raiders required great technical skill the behind the scenes moments are always fascinating.Great fun for Indy fans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for boxing fans
I gifted this to my dad, who is a boxing fan.He absolutely loved it. 6 hours of great boxing.I would recommend this to anyone who like boxing or ALI or both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
This three-disc documentary about the career of Muhammad Ali is amazing, worth more than 100 miscast biopics put together. It tells the whole story, from his youth to his gold medal to his ascension to the championship to his exile from the sport and right through to the end of his fighting days and his later-life bout with Parkinson's. It works for fans of Ali, obviously, but it also works if you want a general primer on boxing history or even an overview of the social, cultural, and political tumult of the 60's. Love him or hate him, the man is an icon, and this has all the footage and all the interviews with all the people who know and were there. An absolute must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest documentary about Muhammad Ali of all time
When you pose with Muhammad Ali for photographs what he likes to do is have you make a fist and put it up against the side of the face while he assumes a boxing pose, so you look like you are landing a heavy blow against the only man ever to win the heavyweight boxing title three times. However, when it was my turn to pose there was no way on earth I was going to pretend I was beating up on the Champ, so I just wanted to shake hands. This gave Ali a chance to give me bunny ears.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best movie on basketball ever
if you are basketball fan, this is a great film for you.Its the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars what a dream team?
this video highlights some of the Greatest Basketball Talent ever on one team.Magic,Jordan&Bird were the Main Headliners but Charles Barkley stole the show overall.nevertheless what a Great Cast of Talent? you will remember this for a very long time if you are a fan of Basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magic, Larry, Michael and the 1992 Olympic Dream Team
Eight months after the U.S. Mens Basketball team lost to the Soviet Union in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, the rules were changed and NBA players became eligible for international competition. However, this was not done because the United States applied pressure after its team of college players lost to the "amateur" Soviet Union players, but rather because around the world the best basketball players from every nation were turning professional (look how many Europeans were at this year's NBA All-Star game). What anybody remembers from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona (after they used an archer to light the torch) is the performance of "The Dream Team."The games and the gold medal were a forgone conclusion, so the real pleasure was simply watching the best basketball players in the world play together on a team; a team, that actually practiced, unlike for the All-Star Game. For fans seeing Magic Johnson and Larry Bird play together on the same team was good enough and then you throw Michael Jordan into the mix.Given what we have seen at the Olympics since then, this remains the greatest basketball team ever assembled and most of us will probably not be around long enough to see a better one.Quibbling over how the team could have been better is a minor debate, once you get past the fact Christian Laettner was picked as the long college player instead of Shaquille O'Neal; dollars to donuts the other 11 will all make the Hall of Fame. This 73-minute documentary covers the entire experience and there is really nothing special (except maybe Charles Barkley's bad boy exploits) here because the idea of the Dream Team was always better than the actual experience. Now every four years we see lesser "Dream Teams" take the court for the United States, while the gap lessens between them and the rest of the world.Probably not until the U.S. loses another game will we see the best American players from the N.B.A. answer the call again like they did that first time in Barcelona. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As addictive as mahjong itself.
I love this documentary.I play it whenever I need a laugh. It is short -- the cinematography is terrible, but the editing is brilliant. The participants are hilarious and their stories are universally touching. This is one for the Smithsonian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
It is great as I am in it and know the director personally! I let my first copy to someone who kept it so I needed another copy to save.

Editorial Review

We all know it hurts when an outfielder runs through the back wall, or when a downhill skier takes a huge tumble, or when a soccer player gets a knee to the crotch. We know it hurts... and we laugh anyway. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars On Parade
I like this. It was a riot, I've heard so many good things about it. I have a question. And maybe you can answer it. I don't have the video right now. And I have been asked, does it have Parade Bloopers on it? I haven't memorized the video, and since I haven't seen it for a while, I figure I should ask someone else.

4-0 out of 5 stars .....too funny!!!
This Blooper video lives up to its name. Definately worth the money. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. If you like non-stop sports bloopers and fun-this tape is for you. ... Read more
