4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting, Though Flawed Document
The primary attraction of this video is that it provides a visual document of some of the greatest German conductors of the century. For those interested in how a conductor "looked" when leading an orchestra, this is an interesting documentary (particuarly for Furtwangler, whose style is the definition of idiosyncratic). The performances are uniformly superb, and provide a captivating contrast with the orchestral style heard(and seen) today in most major symphonies. Therefore, as a muscial document, this video is highly recommended.1-0 out of 5 stars Ill-considered.
With all the copious information provided in recent years, it is ill-considered to portray Karajan as a musician in the service of theThird Reich. For those who insist on believing this man was a wicked Nazi I would beseech you to investigate the facts for yourselves.Karajan never once performed with Hitler in attendence, and he never once displayed any activity that could be interpreted as "a political sympathizer".Truth is, Karajan was rather disliked by the Third Reich---he was, in fact, married to a woman with Jewish blood at that time and was stunted in his musical ambitions by Furtwangler and his governmental supporters.Karajan's files from the Third Reich are extremely thin and contain nothing to support the sensationalism that follows him to this day---and who kept more detailed files than the Nazis? In short: the inaccuracies, the misrepresentations, and the incorrect gathering of facts are defamatory to a man whose talents remain largely unequalled.Read more

This 1965 Canadian documentary captures Leonard Cohen just as he was poised to translate his notoriety as a novelist and poet into a parallel identity as a singer-songwriter. If the latter role would bring him his broadest and most enduring audience, these glimpses of a still youthful Cohen underscore the Montreal native's prevailing literary sensibilities--even when his poetry readings verge on standup routines, both for his impish wit and the adulation it inspires among his listeners, Cohen's serious craft shines through.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done movie
I enjoyed this movie. Nice to watch after seeing the I'm Your Man movie in the theatre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leonard Cohen as a young man.
When the new movie on Mr. Cohen came out in June "I'm Your Man" I wanted to see this CBC Documentary. It is a fantastic look at Leonard when he was an up and coming poet. You will never again get a look at the man as a contemporary in the mid 1960's.Paired with the new movie at the end of his career in the 21st century you will have an amazingly true biography.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Documentary Form
Brilliant Don Owen film from the NFBC. This is a proper documentary explaining the reality of Cohen. I interpret the footage as unflinching, as the always reliable NFBC lens discovers a sensitive, transitional and often uncomfortable artist. As I saw the film I witnessed Cohen in often hilarious social settings and conversations. There is a humor to the voice-over, but not an aesthetic one, as one of the previous reviewers indicated, puzzlingly. On a related note, the voice-over is spare, as the film relies on SOT and B-roll to describe its subject.Read more

"It was like the world went from black & white to Technicolor," saysKeith Richards of the emergence of Elvis Presley in the mid-'50s, and this lookat the King's first officialalbum (the legendary Sun Sessions weren't issued in album form until wellafter the fact) backs up that claim. The one-hour program (plus 40 minutes ofbonus interview material on the DVD) combines performance footage (the early TVshows are not to be missed), photos, and more to limn Presley's early days, whenhe combined country, blues, and R&B to forge a unique, galvanizing style. Sunproducer Sam Phillips, author PeterGuralnick, Presley's musicians, and others are on hand to provide insightand background. But in the end, of course, it comes down to the music--and whenyou're talking about the likes of "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," "MoneyHoney," and "Heartbreak Hotel" (a single that actually wasn't on the album),"classic" hardly begins to cover it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Without this dvd you cannot understand contemporary white music
A smashing dvd with excellent material in the special features. It pays off having engaged respectable and sensitive connoisseurs of Presley's history, music interests and his way of working. The documentary gives us an idea of the artist and musician behind the image of the Vegas-ridden `myth Elvis' that has sustained until today. Not only that it helps to understand why and to what extend Presley was in charge of his first album. It also shows that it needs a shocker to create something new and a talent to keep it alive. The overall accent is perfectly placed: without this dvd you cannot understand contemporary white music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bopping hillbilly
This is a truly great dvd for those interested in how Presley recorded that classic early sound and more specifically his epic first R.C.A album (which The Clash later paid homage to by copying the lettering for their most revered masterpiece, London Calling)and the effect that these recordings had on so many.It also gives us a view of the hurricane that Elvis created when he exploded on the scene. What is refreshing are interviews from other famous musicians and music aficionadas like Keith Richards and Peter Guaralnick(author of Last train to Memphis) as opposed to "those who were close to him" which are often very subjective. There is also some rare footage of Elvis in concert in 1954.

5-0 out of 5 stars The history of this man in this classical dvd
The one-hour program (plus 40 minutes of bonus interview material on the DVD) combines performance footage (the early TV shows are not to be missed), photos, and more to limn Presley's early days, when he combined country, blues, and R&B to forge a unique, galvanizing style.1956 was the year of Elvis in my opinion, all the rockstar make history in rock and roll but "The King" is elevated the rules of rock in 50's.This dvd provides this ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Biography Of Shania Twain
This is the one hour biography of Shania Twain. It is very enjoyable with her great music mixed in. She started out with Country Classics and eventually moved over to pop. She's now one of the best-selling female artists of all time. This video explores the years of heartbreak and sacrifice that led to Shania Twain's breakthrough and crossover success. You will see rare footage of Shania's pre-teen years.

4-0 out of 5 stars A five-foot-four brown-eyed bombshell
"Behind the Music:Shania Twain" is a one hour episode of the VH-1 television series. It's definitely a made-for-TV show, complete with breaks where you would expect commercials to run - but of course, there are no commercials on this recording.5-0 out of 5 stars Just My Opinion, In a Nutshell.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Hello, Yellow Brock Road
The music of the 1970's has brought out some of the most dynamic and universal records ever. It was much harder though for double albums to be as univeral masterpieces than, as much as it is now. Although there are few that stand out like Pink Floyd's The Wall, Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Volumes I & II, and The Beatles White Album. For a living legend like Elton John, he has had so many different double albums from Blue Moves in 1976, and Here & There in 1975. Although those records have shined, his masterpiece Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is still the prime record of his career. Although he has made so many, this was the breakthrough one, that still remains his highest-selling one.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you like the record, you will love the DVD
At one point, this record was in the Guiness Book of World Records. Not for sales or revenue, etc.But because the entire record was **written, recorded and produced over a 2 week span**.When you put that in present-day context, that makes this a milestone, IMHO, not to mention even trying to contrast it with the stuff that comes out these days. This record gives me chills, and there is one thing I could never figure out about Ej and Bernie Taupin, and would love someone to explain it to me.How could two *very very* english guys write so effectively about such american topics as cowboys (Roy Rogers) gangsters (Danny Bailey), Wizard of Oz, Maralyn Monroe, etc.?I for one never thought for a minute that these guys were from another country.MOre credit to them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great series featuring great album!
This reviewer has just recently been made aware of this series, and I must say it certainly has made the advent of DVD's even more welcome. Such a genre serves many purposes: a way for music fans to get behind-the-scenes glances at how a great album gets made; a historical perspective that someone who was perhaps too young during the original release date can get from watching such a historical record; and an eye-opener on the inner workings of music studios, and how the choice of studio can actually help in the crafting of a particular album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aging Gracefully.
"Beautiful Girls". What a fantastic opportunity for lovers of Broadway musicals to see the behind the scenes creation and making of a successful musical in four days. This film is in part documentary combined with hi-lights of the finished performance at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. The story line of "Beautiful Women" attending a Follies Reunion so many years into retirement is powerful and awakens thoughts of aging. Mandy Patinkin, Carol Burnett, Barbara Cook and Lee Remick lead an all star cast in this Steven Sondheim Classic. You might want to view this film more than once.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAY UP THERE.........
LEE ..... Lee Remick, Barbara Cook, Mandy, George, Liliane, Carol ..... {A}licia ...Liz ...Betty ....Adolphe .... how quickly it fades .......SO????5-0 out of 5 stars I'LL TAKE ANY SCRAP I CAN GET!
True...this is not "the best" documentary film ever made, although it IS pretty darned good, and part of the criticism may come because most of us who would want to see this would be just as happy with just one long uncut take of the concert on film...but we do have that on CD (thank goodness!). And what a concert it was!!! This is as near a dream cast as one could hope for. Of course there will be be endless quibbling over that opinion, and endless comparisons to the OBC...that's the glory of theatre...many opinions. But the overall arc and energy of this concert is amazing and that cannot be disputed...the CD is a classic... and one of those rare few "I wish I were there" events captured on recording. That said, the documentary does offer delight in the backstage glimpses it gives, especiallly after several (hundred? thousand?) listenings to the CD. For instance...I went into this already worshipping and adoring Barbara Cook (for me there can be no other Sally Durant), but after watching, I was really hooked onto Lee Remick too. And there were lots of discovery moments like that because of the documentary...so it did indeed, bring me someplace that the concert CD alone did not, and for that I truly value this DVD. So, perfect? No. (And franky, what is?) But it is worth watching and re-watching, especially if you are a total Follies junky, or learning to become one. How many other backstage stories can you say that of? For me, darned few...this one's a keeper. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It was ok...
I wouldn't put this in my top 10 favorite Kiss productions, I have always been a fan of concert footage, and this movie has none whatsoever. This was a gamble for me, because there were no reviews when I looked at it. It has a lot of interesting stuff in it, a very long interview from the Alive III time period, and the induction of Ace and Peter into the Rockwalk of Fame, and just some other miscellaneous snippets from the years. It's good for a hardcore collector, but if you want concert stuff, don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought this tape being a true kiss fan and was very disappointed. It was something I could have lived without seeing. If you love their music, this tape IS NOT for you. They don't even play KISS music throughout the video. The only music you hear is a ridiculous guitar jam (on and on and on).I know that Kiss did not give permission for this tape and that is a good thing.I feel that they wouldn't ruin their magic with the fans by putting out this Piece Of Junk.My recomendation is to save your money, wish I did. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A scattered look at a scattered musical decade
This video is the eighth in a 10-video set documenting Rock `n' Roll in America. It's very entertaining and informative, although more on the entertainment side.I think it says a lot about rock that the first SEVEN videos are used to document rock BEFORE the `70s.
4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it.
Not what I expected (I'm not sure what I expected) but it was pretty good.It was a bit heavy on bashing and bad-mouthing one style or another that, in retrospect, were a lot of fun, but overall it's not bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulously entertaining look at the music of the 50's & 60's
If you're a fan of 50's & 60's music, you must own this DVD!Features segments on songwriters Lieber & Stoller, Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, Burt Bacharach & Hal David plus Bobby Darin. Also features clips of many artists performing, including Darin, Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, the Coasters et al.Also includes interviews with Shadow Morton, Jerry Wexler, Ahmet Ertegun, Ben E. King, the late Doc Pomus, and Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las, to name just a few.Five hours of a great look back at how the music of the late 50's and early 60's was made, this book is a perfect compliment to Ken Emerson's book "Always Magic In The Air".Get them both. It'll be the best $30 (at current prices) you ever spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good intro Bio for Bobby Darin - for fans or fans to be
One of the two great Bobby Darin bios (the other being PBS's Beyond the Song). This one is totally different, and features more comments from friends and family than Beyond the Song which focuses more on interviews with fellow celebrities.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition to Your Music Collection
My two favorite sections of the two DVD's include "The Hitmakers" which include sections on girl groups such as The Shirelles and The Ronettes, Tommy James and the Shondells, The Monkees, The Archies, Phil Spector, and others that will be familiar to you.My other favorite section is that of "Leiber and Stoller" and the songs that they wrote for such groups as The Drifters and The Coasters. The sections on Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, Burt Bacharach are also worthy additions. The section on the Brill Building songwriters entitled "The Hitmakers:The Teens Who Stole Pop Music" alone is worth the price of this set.I plan on using parts of these DVD's in my after-school music class with middle school students.I have also purchased extra copies to give for friends. ... Editorial Review

The poet, vocalist, and songwriter Gil Scott-Heron is both thedescendant of the African griots and the forefather of rap. In the early '70s,he boldly proclaimed that "the revolution will not be televised," and in the'80s he warned us of the "New World Order" with his prophetic and satiricalsingle, "B Movie." The gifted filmmaker Robert Mugge filmed the controversialartist in performance at the now-defunct Wax Museum in Washington, D.C., in1982. Mugge alternates between the electrifying soul/jazz/funk grooves of Scott- Heron's Midnight Band and his witty and deep monologues about racial politicswith a wax figure of Uncle Sam and his dead-on commentaries on urban life in thenation's capital. Included on this DVD is the bonus selection "Is That Jazz,"Heron's swinging shout-out to the jazz legends and a rebuke of those who try tolimit it. Nobody tells it like it is like Gil Scott-Heron, and nobody ever will.Read more

Gil Scott-Heron is a genius! This DVD is great because not only do you get to see him and his AMAZING band perform, but you get to see his personality as he shows you around Washington D.C. If you're a fan of Gil, you should own this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly
The cover blurb on this DVD says something like "No artist was ever better served by a documentary...", and that seems to me about right. I had heard a couple of GSH tunes before I saw this on PBS in about '83, and I was somewhat impressed, but what I'd heard was short radio-friendly stuff, and alas, this was of course in the days after the short exquisite life of Beautiful Radio was ended by brutal corporate murder, so radio-friendly meant short and easily accessible, whereas I was listening for audio with more protein than sugar, so I was only mildly tweaked. Then I saw this doc, and was an instant convert. I was quite buzzed by his articulate intelligence, but about when the long slow meandering spoken introduction to "Angeldust" slyly and seamlessly passed through poetry into song, I realized I was watching genius at work. I have been a fan ever since, and not regretted it an instant. It is wonderful to have this brilliant bit of filmmaking available. Now, if we could only please have the video (preferrably full length) of the performance captured on the double live CD "Tales of Gil Scott Heron and the Amnesia Express", which in CD form is criminally long out of print, while the video is currently only available in europe, and only 62 minutes long.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poetic Genius
The editorial review was just about dead on.Gil Scott Heron, in his poetic genius, brought to light stories of the people, stories of the streets, and an honest look at the role politics played with the people.Though "not for everybody" perhaps, his lyrics to "Whitey on the Moon" ring true once again, today.Powerful, powerful stuff from a man in a class all by himself.I only wish there were more videos of his other works.Read more

I bought both Vols. 1 and 2, and saw them one after the other, and I noticed to much jazz filler in both. I want blues. I love and respect the jazz ladies (Holliday, Leena Horn, et. al.) but I bought this for the blues. It could have contained more Delta guys, some Chicago artists, West Coast blues, Texas... come on! There's more out there to have made a beautiful video but the jazz filler just doesn't seem right on a blues video. And please don't tell me Billie Holliday is blues! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A fine documentary of the making of a great record.Good insight from all sides of the event with interviews throughout featuring both Robertson and Helm as well as the rest of The Band.Clapton and Harrison (among others) also weigh in.In my opinion, this is as good as the Classic Album efforts on Pink Floyd's DSoM and Dan's Aja.Like those, do NOT miss this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classy Document of a Classic Band
This is an illuminating glimpse into the music and song craft of The Band.Composed primarily of interviews with individual members of the group and producer John Simon in studio settings discussing the music on their timelessly classic second studio recording "The Band".
5-0 out of 5 stars Band Fans
If you are a Band Fan you will like this video - you get to hear Robbie Sing - if you want to call it that. Levon enjoys some songs, Danko plays a few, and I don't know what Garth was suppose to be doing but it is one for the collection and a great technical break down of their most popular songs. A great Buy! Do it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably HORRIBLE
We have begun to assemble quite an extensive collection of concert DVDs and this is, by far, the worst one we have purchased to date!!In fact, we will be returning the DVD and don't particularly care whether or not it can be returned for store credit or for a return of our money, we just want it out of our collection. We sat through this entire performance, just hoping that it would get better...what a WASTE of time.It is too bad that such a fantastic artist could produce and direct something that can be best described as complete and total garbage!DO NOT waste your money on this DVD!

2-0 out of 5 stars Garbage from a phenomenal artist
Alanis Morissette is one of this generations most talented musicians, and one of the best live rock performers I've ever seen and heard.I cannot believe this piece of trash of a DVD was released and approved by her.The quality and jump cutting to mini interviews and documentary's comes off like someone on drugs. This was a show that should've been captured on screen for everyone to see and how it got slaughtered like this is unreal to me.The documentary stuff should've been added to a special features link or a b-side.If this wasn't enough, she released years later, "Feast on Scraps", which I thought would be her full, untouched, untampered with concert, and was I wrong, it was the same botched up garbage that was done on this one.A quintessential artist such as this who has been around for over ten years and still has yet to produce and release a full length, perfectly visual and audio concert, and hasn't done so, it's just tragic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Great, Not All That Bad
As you've probably noticed from the other reviews, this is not your typical concert DVD.Had I read these reviews first, I never would have ordered this DVD.Am I happy I have it? Yes.But then, I'm a collector - I have over 60 music and concert DVDs.And down at number 60 in my collection is just about where I'd rank it.It's interesting, albeit perhaps a bit pretentious, with all the mixing of visual images and sound scrapes.Often I wish they would have just given us the concert with nice, high quality sound. But when they do give us the concert sound, often it's awesome and so great to hear it in 5.1 instead of the regular CD version. And then often, it's cool to hear all the different versions of her sound. The good news about this DVD is that you can rent it online and check it out for very little cost if you can get a fast turn-around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wanting More
This is a great DVD mainly featuring interviews with Monk's friends and family, providing fascinating info about the man. However on my wish-list is a comprehensive DVD of Monk's performances (there seems to be plenty of footage) WITHOUT any talking over his playing!. I am much more interested in Monk's music than in the art of the video-editor. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love Monk and this video
I've watched this three times and look forward to my next viewing again. Features interviews with many of his contemporaries including Billy Taylor, Marion White, Barry Harris and his son Thelonious Mon Jr., as well as lots of footage of the master himself playing. I'm a huge Monk fan, and I found this fascinating and very informative on what made this genius tick. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazingly inspiring
To SEE Monk playing the piano adds a whole new dimension to his music. This man was truly channelling.Thank God for Thelonious Monk. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much jazz filler.
I thought this series (both Vol. 1 and 2) were a good source of historic blues info. I especially like the way they corelate historic events such as the 1929 Market Crash and WWII with blues events and artists. The only criticism I have is that it mixes too much jazz with the blues. I know there's a bluesy side of jazz (Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, et. al.) but that's space in the video that could have been dedicated to blues people: more down home delta guys, Chicago 50 & 60s, Texas, New Orleans, West Coast, British, you name it, but no jazz filler, please! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Much more than music
This film has some touching moments. It's not so much a story about a chorus touring Eastern Europe as it is about people touching other people's lives.I think the Americans ended up learning as much from their hosts as they taught. The filmmakers covered a lot of ground in their 60 minutes, packing the film with talking heads, each relating their own particular stories. There is so much in there that you really have to pay attention! The photography and sound hit some technical bumps at times, but they manage to give you the feeling that nothing was going to stop these indie filmmakers from getting their story out there.Overall, the film did give me the feeling that I was on tour with the chorus, and I was sorry to see my trip end when the credits rolled. ... Editorial Review

In the late '60s, the notion that reggae would become more than just anovelty act would have been laughed at. To break into the mainstream, themovement needed a powerful voice of prophetic proportions. This voice emergedfrom the collective work of three pioneering friends from Jamaica, Peter Tosh,Bunny Wailer, and Robert Nesta Marley, who sought to bring about an ideologicalrevolution through deeply meditative, hypnotic, and spiritual music. 4-0 out of 5 stars RAW!!!!!!!!
It is an insite into an arist starting off and having to compromise slighty for the bigger good.In depth on how the tracks were recorded and edited.Video and audio of how mixing and great editing can change an average song into a great song. Good for music lovers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for true Marley/Wailers fans
I just finished watching this fine documentary. (Picked it up for only $4.99 in a bargain bin!) The content is priceless - interviews with Bob Marley, Rita Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer are quite rare. The interviews with Chris Blackwell, the recording engineers and studio musicians from Jamaica, England and U.S. who helped to produce the groundbreaking album "Catch A Fire" are enlightening. I've been a Marley fan for 30 years and I learned a lot from watching this DVD. It illustrates, in a somewhat disjointed fashion, the Jamaican culture that gave birth to reggae music and it's ambassadors to the world, The Wailers, while recording the development of "Catch A Fire" which brought reggae to mainstream British and American rock fans. Marley fans owe a great deal to Chris Blackwell and Island records. I attended Bob Marley's last concert in America in 1981. Every week, it seems, I see another young kid wearing a Bob Marley T-shirt. Whether you're an old Marley fan or a young one, there is plenty in this DVD for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight
This is a wonderful video for anyone interested in the technical aspects of the creation of a classic album, and the efforts of the production team to translate a "new" musical style to the masses. With a strong focus on the music-- especially the drum and bass-- and indispensible interviews with the original Wailers as well as the session musicians who contributed to the album.Bass Players will love the priceless interviews with "Family Man" Barrett and Robbie Shakespeare. This is not a concert video, but a great look behind the scenes at the making of a breakthrough record, including a track-by-track breakdown of some of the original studio tapes.Highly recommended for musicians.May bore the heck out of non-musicaians. ...
