5-0 out of 5 stars Good Collection.
For those who don't want to go through the trouble of sitting through "Dance On Fire," "Live At The Hollywood Bowl," or "The Soft Parade," here's "The Best Of The Doors." It is basically a collage of videos featured in all three programs with a few new additions and editing changes. Of course, there's the double-edge fact that both sets have videos you can onlyfind in one or the other. The first video here, "Strange Days," is not in any of the other three, it is a surreal, Fellinisque sideshow to one of the band's darkest, most evocative songs. Doors fans will have a blast with the video's opening, which is the illusion that the cover to the "Strange Days" album has sprung to life. Ray Manzarek, the band's organist, makes a few appearances, most notably as a priest. This is followed by the video for "Break On Through," a publicity clip done for the band's debut album. It's still fun and exhilarating, a few months ago I saw it air on MTV. It is Jim Morrison's first appearance in the video and he makes his presence known. Next comes an interview clip from 1969 where an older-looking, beard-sporting Morrison is talking about poetry and how it is woven into the band's music. The video borrows clips also from "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" and we get footage of Morrison reciting "The Celebration Of The Lizard" and following it with a part of "Spanish Caravan," this is said to be one of The Doors' calmest, least-visceral concerts and aside from the great music, it shows. There is a well-assembled music video for "The Unknown Soldier" which skillfully mixes war footage with Doors concert sequences showing Morrison faking an execution and vomitting blood. "The Changeling" follows, showing the band in super-star mode as they walk through air-ports, perform concerts and talk to fans. One of the more interesting pieces is footage of the band recording "Wild Child" in the studio, it's interesting to watch them put together the song and sometimes disagree on certain parts (drummer John Densmore calls the song's ending "the stupidest thing I've ever heard"). It's also fun to watch Robby Krieger play his trademark slide guitar for this song. Doors fans will especially want this video for the "Gloria" piece which was banned by MTV when first released but not anymore considering on the 30th anniversary of Morrison's death VH1 aired it. It's a fun, dirty video showing Morrison acting erotic on stage and clips of him with whom I suspect is Pamlera Courson getting intimate in a room. The video is never "pornographic" and it's a fun song. The medley of "Whiskey Bar," "Backdoor Man" and "Five To One" is one of the interesting concert moments, showing the band's ability for some good hard rock. I have never been a big fan of the "L.A. Woman" video Ray Manzarek directed, I love the song, but the video doesn't go much with it and it never amounts to anything as interesting as the other videos assembled. "Wishful Sinful" could have been left out, it's not exactly timeless, visceral Doors. However, the Ed Sullivan performance of "Light My Fire" is featured and truly evokes the Doors spirit, showing Morrison all in black leather defying the Sullivan people and saying "higher" on network TV. Morrison's last known interview is featured which was done when he was getting ready to go to trial for supposedly exposing himself at a 1969 Miami concert. This is followed by an atmospheric, stylish and very recent music video done for a cut from "An American Prayer" titled "The Ghost Song." The band members, in their present aged form, perform the song to images of Morrison and dancing Indians. The ending is a fun rendition of "Hello I Love You" showing the band performing in London and a hot babe dancing to the tune (the chick in black was obviously not filmed in 1968 mind you). Over-all, it's a good fix for Doors fans. I recommend "The Doors Collection" DVD of course, but for those who want a simple cut of the good stuff, here it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY THE BEST OF THE DOORS
Maybe I'm just biased, as The Doors are my favourite band of all time, andI worship the man that was (and in my heart, still is) Jim Morrison.Ihang on every word ever spoken by him. This is definitely the video youshould get if you want to get to know the Doors a bit better. If like meyou weren't around to witness the phenomenon surrounding them, and theunique singing abilities of Jim, then this is definitely the video for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best Doors video
This video is very cool, lots of rare clips (the recording of Wild Child in the studio is my favorite), but there is some random clips from early music videos which are not very good. I was expecting better than somecheesy make-out scenes for the song Gloria. Anyway, if you're looking forrarities, buy this video, but Live at the Hollywood bowl is a much betterchoice if you want a raw Doors performance. ... Read more

I grabbed this on vhs (thank god) what a joke all the "interviews" are over the phone the footage is simply pitiful!! i have boots that would knock this crap out of the parkthe so called "concert" footage is so sickingly beyond believe that it makes one wonder if Winter himself ever had a hand in this, one part is, at best 4-5th gen bootleg footage, where is the Musikladen footage? where is Winters consideration for his fans???Go to your nearest record show find some quality footage and leave this trash to the landfill

3-0 out of 5 stars HIGH-TECH
First of all I would like to say that I like JW very much! but this DVD is terrible! It's like a pirated VCD. When we speak of DVD, it comes to our mind of high-tech. In this DVD there's nothing high-tech. The songs which he performed by the way are all excellent, the quality of sound is fair and the quality of the picture is the worst I've ever seen.1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry Johnny !!!

Editorial Review

Given the often inextricable relationship between art and suffering,it's no coincidence that Billie Holiday, popularly acclaimed as jazz's greatest (if not technically best) female singer, was also one of its most tragic figures. While both triumph and tragedy are covered in this hourlong documentary, we are mercifully spared excessive details about the more sordid aspects of Holiday's life (her drug and alcohol addictions, her disastrous relationships with abusive men) in favor of careful consideration of her music. Testimonials are offered by those who played with her (pianist Mal Waldron and trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison), were influenced or inspired by her (singers Carmen McRae and Annie Ross), or worked with her (producer Milt Gabler). Together, they paint a portrait of a woman who was both tough and vulnerable, sad and defiant, an unschooled musician who became a supreme innovator. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Kultur, this time you missed it!
If you are interested in the (ever fashionable) approach to Jazz, via the contemporary interpretation of the social environment in which the Jazz artists created, then there is a good chance you may like this DVD.5-0 out of 5 stars SO INFLUENTIAL!!!!
This Billie Holiday album was like a ray of light to me when I first listened to it!It's so inspiring! You can see why so many artists of today are influenced by it!The music really took me to the borderline.I thank my lucky star that this album came along.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Your A Fan......
Billie Holiday is a figure of her time and this movie just about justifies that statment. Although the footage isent anything out of the ordinary...including 'Strange Fruit', the infamous 'Fine annd Mellow' and a personal favorite 'Please Don't Talk About me When I'm gone'. She shows no real emotion during these short performances, but you can tell what she is thinking and feeling, during them. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful film about two of America's important artists.
This review comes a little late but...better late than never. It is a marvellous film, VERY John Cage and Merce Cunningham whose collaboration led to some inspirational work among the American avant garde. It covers most of their collaborative lives and introduces some superb archival footage. We see John Cage of his "Lectures on Indeterminacy in Modern Music" days and many extracts from Merce Cunningham's productions going way back.Read more

Editorial Review

One of jazz music's most entertaining and eccentric figures is profiledin Robert Mugge's hourlong, 1980 profile of the late bandleader-keyboardist-composer Sun Ra. "I don't consider myself one of the humans," he once said. "I'ma spiritual being," who was reputed to eschew the usual jazzman's indulgences ofdrugs and sex and who, despite the weird trappings (he and his big band, theIntergalactic Omniverse Arkestra, usually performed in glittery costumes thatcombined African, alien, and thrift-shop styles), infused his music with astrong sense of discipline and precision. Here we see Ra and the band rehearsingand performing; their "joyful noise" is free, sometimes chaotic, but alsoclearly blues-based, somewhat reminiscent of Monk or Mingus (there's even arendition of "'Round Midnight"). Ra is also interviewed surrounded by theEgyptian artifacts and antiquities that were an important element of his"mythocracy." He clearly loves having an audience--and how can you not enjoylistening to a guy who also chooses the White House as a backdrop for solemnpronouncements like "I'm not a part of history--I'm more a part of mystery, which is my story"? 5-0 out of 5 stars classic sun ra
if you are a sun ra fan then this is a must. if you want an introduction to sun ra you couldnt ask for much better. great live performances and classic quotes from the master of the one liner. " with all the school and hospitals you got, your supposed to have a better world than this" and" you cant have a whitehouse if you dont have a blackhouse, in fact you cant have anything without its opposite" and the timeless " space is the place." some of the music on this dvd is simply awesome. horns echoing ancient egypt, synthesizers making modern musicians look pathetic, an ancient infinity drum and a moog synthesizer. sun ra, tho he would deny he is of our species, is the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Documentary of a Fascinating Musician
Robert Mugge's "A Joyful Noise" is a great film that anyone who is interested in Sun Ra should buy immediately. It captures the Arkestra in a variety of environments, including at their communal home in Philadelphia, in concert at various locations, and even on a rooftop. The film also features excellent interviews with many members of the group, including the legendary John Gilmore, Danny Thompson, and, of course, the genius Mr. Ra himself. What is particularly wonderful about this film is that it provides various examples of their music and the philosophical context in which the group operated. This video is absolutely essential. This is also a good film to show to the small children in your family, because it will allow their ears to become accustomed to the puissant possibilities of sound. 3-0 out of 5 stars it's so hard to make anything out of this dvd
i gave this dvd 3 stars for its eccentricity--which in some circles may be viewed as creativity. otherwise i think the whole thing swings between charlatanry and a few artistic sparks.

4-0 out of 5 stars KISS at their best!
By the time it was 1987, the hair metal era had been big for about four or five years, and even though Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were gone from KISS and they(KISS)had taken their makeup off, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had managed to keep the band together, even though it meant having lineup changes and taking their makeup off.It was sad to see Ace Frehley and Peter Criss leave the band-but this made up for it.
5-0 out of 5 stars All for the ClassicMaterial
At least this release has a semblance of production to it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection but they should put full retrospective out
If you've seen Motley Crue's "Uncensored", it's somewhat similar to this one. "Konfidential", "Unplugged" and "Kiss My A**" should also be picked up. So far the footage alone makes this one worth getting over the others. If you loved the 80s era KISS along with seeing some vintage clips, this one's the one you want to pick up.

When Karen Carpenter died on February 4, 1983 at the age of 32, more than one generation mourned. Karen and her brother, Richard, had achieved monumental success as purveyors of soft-rock soulfulness, aided by their wholesome, wistful looks. After all, these were the hard-rocking, disco-throbbing '70s, yet with classics like "Close to You," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "We've Only Just Begun," the pair blurred the lines of musical class. But no one knew--or at least talked about--Karen's debilitating bouts of bulimia and ongoing battle against the ravaging effects of anorexia. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering the Carpenters
I received exactly the product I expected. I looked around for a long time to find the right DVD, and now I got it. A happy man is writing theese words. Lots of good memories from a long past time, came baack to me. Good to know, that I can find products in Amazon, that usually are difficult to become.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Richard and Karen Carpenter
"Close To You - Remembering the Carpenters", is a touching DVD that recalls the career of the Carpenters and the life of Karen Carpenter.Richard Carpenter is the primary "host", although there are many others who contribute stories and information about the Carpenters, such as Petula Clark, Joe Osborne, Les Paul, Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach, and members of the Carpenter band.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
First I will say that I am only 24 so I obviously did not grow up hearing the Carpenters on the radio. That is why this DVD was helpful for me.I was very curious to learn about the Carpenters and try to get a glimpse of what their lives were like.I really appreciated the fact that Richard had a lot to do with this and personally talked throughout the whole DVD.I absolutely love the Carpenters music and watching this made me love them even more. It is filled with Richard's comments, video "snippets," stories from people that were involved in their lives, radio jingles, commericials and even has their White House concert. An absolute must for your Carpenters collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Bob Marley Story
I can honestly say that this documentary is one of the best I have ever seen. Before I saw it, I would listen to Bob before my soccer games to calm my nerves. But after I saw this video, I have shared my view about it to all my friends. I wish I could get it in DVD soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.Hypnotic and touching.
I've shown this video to friends who were not previously Marley fans. They are now.Marley's charisma is boundless, and the depth of his soul shines through in this video. The video itself is put together very well, mixing numerous interviews with Bob with some live concert and recording scenes, interviews with friends and family, and fantastic footage of the significant places and events of Bob's life. The narrator's beautiful voice and British/Jamaican accent are hypnotic, and lend significantly to the video's charm.Read more

Editorial Review

This hip look at the Seattle music scene of the past decade treats thehype with bemused humor but treats the music with respect. Packedwith witty interviews with band members, record execs, and Seattle music aficionados, much of the film places a welcome spotlight on the bands that didn't become part of the national "grunge" phenomenon and scores of live clips and rare recordings show that "the Seattle Sound" didn't begin with Nirvana or end with Soundgarden. You don't have to be a fan to enjoy this ebullient rockumentary, and if you're not careful, director Doug Pray's infectious love of the music may even make you one. This video features performances byBlood Circus, Coffin Break, Crackerbash, Dead Moon, Fastbacks, Flop, Gas Huffer, The Gits, Hammerbox, Love Battery, The Melvins, The Mono Men, Mudhoney, Nirvana, The Posies, Seaweed, 7 Year Bitch, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Soundgarden, Supersuckers, Young Fresh Fellows, and Zipgun, and includes Nirvana's first live performance of the grunge anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit." 4-0 out of 5 stars A very important documentary
This film is very important to understand the Seattle Sound and the musical movement in the last decade. PEARL JAM sounds very good playing "Not For you". There a a lot of great performances of Mudhoney, Fastbacks, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. Also There are interviews with Eddie Vedder, Charles Peterson (ex subpop photographer), Mark Arm, etc.

Have not read the book yet but am shocked at such an angry review by Frederick A Cooper. Why did he even watch the documentary? He obviously does not like grunge or most of the people involved with it.When someone is happy that people have died a tragic death it just shows he has some internal issues he needs to work on.Next time don't bother buying the DVD much less reviewing it in all your negativity, we don't want to hear it!I would also recomend uping your prozac a little bit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BS Over Broadway
Everyone who's reading this already knows the premise of this documentary about the backstage machinations of Broadway show biz: One of America's best loved television stars agrees to make her Broadway comeback in a half-assed dinner theatre-calibre comedy, ultimately rising above her third-rate material and the fourth-rate "creative" team (playwright, director, producers)who attempt to thwart her at every turn. Fascinating stuff! The behind-the-scenes honchos (and playwright Ken Ludwig, in particular, whose comic "masterpiece" borrows a central plot device right out of an old "I Love Lucy" episode!)--are so wrapped up in their self-importance that don't seem to know--or care--how ludicrous they sound dissing their star on camera. Still, one big question goes unasked--or answered: What was Burnett thinking when she signed on for this turkey??? From all available evidence, there were more laughs in her weakest TV sketch than in this entire overblown production. Ironically, one of Burnett's most crowd-pleasing on-stage moments in the documentary comes when a backstage technical snafu forces her to break character and simply chat with the audience until the glitch is fixed. What a pro! (This review is based on VHS version.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A well documentary and someone should be embarrassed...
The film went into unexpected details about the whole Broadway process. What is most interesting is the arrogance of the playwright: a man who seemed obsessed with the thought ofbeing embarrassed by actors who apparently were not treating his masterpiece properly. Well he need not have worried; the man's own gross behavior was an embarrassment and actually difficult to watch. Unfortunately I did not have access to DVD version; I look forward to seeing the commentary.

Robert Johnson was one of the most enigmatic bluesmen of the 20th century and his life is still a mystery today.Fans only have two grainy pictures of Johnson and various accounts of the mans' life by those who knew him and those who purport to have known him.Having died at the age of 27 by poisoning only adds to the legacy.Johnson, like many of his contemporaries in that early century era, liked women and whiskey and that became his undoing...a jealous husband poisoned his drink and sent Johnson off into the history books forever. In this documentary, other bluesmen will tell you what Johnson was all about, right up to those final hours but some of their testimony is questionable, as was Johnsons' entire life. But the music is there and it lives up to the Johnson image. Many songs are haunting (Hellhound on My Trail, Come On In My Kitchen) and many are sad (Drunkenhearted Man,From Four Til Late)but they all carry Johnsons'unique stamp on the blues. One listen and you'll hear it.Danny Glover's narration is compassionate and blues musician Keb Mos' silhouetted figure makes you feel that you are watching actual footage of Johnson himself. Good stuff...

3-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, a little cheesy?
6-7 years after John Hammond provided us with a decent (if somewhat slight) documentary on Robert Johnson in 'The Search for Robert Johnson', 'Can You Hear the Wind Howl' attempted a far more ambitious interpretation of Johnson's life which, whilst offering little new information (and rehashing stories from interviewees [Johnny Shines, David Edwards] that have long circulated in 'blues' circles), nevertheless provided a good deal of (musical) context missing from the Hammond outing.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite long enough...
This DVD is a decent documentary of Johnson's life. I found the interviews with those who knew Johnson to be the best part. Johnny Shines and Honeyboy Edwards were both the best part. If your a fan of the Blues and Robert Johnson this is worth the money. However, my only complaints are that it wasn't very long and Danny Glover wasn't the best narrator for the documentary. The interviews and the music make the DVD worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS EVER ! ! !
I own the VHS tape and I will buy the DVD version when it realeses which I think will be on January 25th. I think this is one of the best KISS concerts I've ever seen. They have the best live guitar work I've ever heard. The best drums and voices not to mention the sound effect and performance including the scenario of the KISS concert. This concert is the KISS ALIVE III concert, which I think the KISS ALIVE III C.D. is the best live album from KISS. I suggest you buy the DVD version which will come out in two days and part of the DVD will be KISS X-TREME CLOSE UP ! !
2-0 out of 5 stars Konfidential
My biggest beef is that this video has dubbed the music from Alive III.The video performances are not necessarily the ones that were recorded for the album.5-0 out of 5 stars The best Kiss video I have ever seen
This is the best Kiss video that I have ever seen. The only downside to this video is that it only shows 4 videos of Kiss when they still wore make-up but the other songs more than well make up for that. This video takes you backstage and the members talk about life on the road and in the studio. And there is a great scene with a real powerful type woman, if you have seen the scene, you know what I'm talking about. The only other bad part is it leaves out a great song: Rock 'N' Roll All Nite which in my opinion is one of their best if not their best songs. Other than that, this video is great for both newcomers and older fans alike. ... Read more

This video is a staple for every juggalos collection. Any juggalo that is new to the scene, watch this video and you will be pretty much caught up with the way things are. I have watched this video at least 50 times. No joking. I love it. Some parts of it are alittle boring but it definetly all works out. Buy it...

classic!!!!! i've loved this band since i was a little kid there cd cerial killer[based off this tape] was the first cd i ever bought 4-0 out of 5 stars GREEN JELLY WHERE ARE YOU?
Cereal Killer is very likeable from the very first viewing. It has everything the demented "Metal Head" would like to see and hear. The videos are creative, funny and at times a little sick! Backed by "Hard Rockin" music, Green Jelly (formerly Green Jello;Sued for using the "JELLO" name)Outdid themselves and would like to say to the band You are a talented bunch, Come Back!!!5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy!
I gave this five stars because it's one of the nuttiest band video compilations ever made. Inspired by Gwar, Green Jelly (formerly Green Jello) came into mainstream America with the Mtv release of the popular Three Little Pigs video. They capitolized on the fact that musically speaking, they had no talent. Instead they focused their attention on the cheaply made paper mache and latex-covered couch cushion costumes that made up their silly videos, often parodying other bands or name brand products. It was this blatant copyright infringement that saw them on the defendant stand for many lawsuits, most notably, Kraft, who sued over the Jello name. They were also sued for the use of various cereal mascots (who are comically killed).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fab Fun For Guys & Dolls Fans
This recording is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has not seen the Broadway cast perform this fun show! This is how I was introduced to Faith Prince, whose performance is ASTONISHING and FAR surpasses the relatively lame one from the movie. It's not a full reproduction of the show, but all of the big numbers are done completely and you can >>> SEE <<< the fun that the cast is having with the music and the roles.
5-0 out of 5 stars It shows the less attractive sides of some of the actors
The documentary is a thrilling piece of how the 1992 revival CD of Guys and Dolls was made. My only regret is that they never mention the name of the show. I never knew that Faith Prince was a dirty mouth and 40 years old. I didn't know that Peter Gallagher had rotten teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. It is a good documentary nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars One heck of a documentary
I watched a bit of this when I got the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson at the Company Theatre in Norwell. I enjoyed the bits of footage at the beginning and the bit where, "Adelaide doesn't say [expletive deleted]. That was the dirtiest bit of the documentary. I didn't realize that the director was such a good singer. I also didn't know that Peter Gallagher had such ugly teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. I like looking at them in the pictures of the inlay card. All in all, it is a very nice documentary. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, not outstanding
While this DVD is interesting and well-produced, it doesn't measure up to other releases in the "Classic Album" series. The great bulk of screen time is spent on talking head interviews. That in itself would be okay, but they focus more on praising Jimi than discussing the music and the nuts and bolts of its creation. There is a lot of material that didn't make it onto this DVD - extensive alternate takes and outtakes - that has been broadcast on the radio. That material would have provided a fascinating supplement and insight into the Electric Ladyland creation process, and the brilliance behind the compositions of the songs. But instead this disc shows too much reminiscing about Jimi and mourning of his early death.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recounting The Journey
Classic Albums recounters the journey of the legendary music recordings.Classic Albums takes you a behind the scences look at one of jimi hendrix's most succesful albums. The story is told in rare archival film footage, music, and from a diary kept by a hendrix employee. Their are many great interviews from the members themself Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding as well as keyboard virtuoso Steve Windwood. I think the best part of the film is Eddie Kramer who engineered the electric ladyland sessions. This film is loaded with fascinating footage of Jimi Hendrix in the studio. I think from one perspective we can all appreciate how great Electric Ladyland really was.
