4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable documentary for Bee Gees fans
Produced in Britain in 1997, this documentary seems to give the viewer a very deep, personal look into Barry, Robin and Maurice's lives. We see the place in Manchester where they grew up, the theatre where they first sang, even their school. We are also invited into the studio to witness how the guys craft a typical song. Numerous celebrities offer comments about their talents such as Sir George Martin. Some of their songs (interspersed throughout) have also been made into low-budget video clips (obviously just for the benefit of this production), some of them live, some lip-synced.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Piece as told by the brothers Gibb themselves!
This is a must have in your video library. It's their life story as can only be honestly told by Barry, Robin, and the late Maurice Gibb. It's astonishing, chilling, extraordinary, real.5-0 out of 5 stars ITS GREAT I LOVE IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robyn Hitchcock, one of the best pop musicians
Robyn Hitchcock is one of the best pop musicians, there's no doubt about it. This movie directed by the Oscar winner ("The silence of the lambs") Jonathan Demme, is simply the consecration of Hitchcock, playing before an audience that we never see but that fervor applauds it, in a window of New York. The people who passes behind sometimes appear incredulous, and those who are of the side of in enjoy the fantastic music and poetry of the great Robyn Hitchcock.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film just WAY too little of it.
I love Storefront Hitchcock. However the DVD was released in Standard format only (full screen) which is way lame.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have played this DVD more than any other
This is a totally amazing film and I also leave it in the DVD player as I would a CD.And I remember Delancey street at the time in NYC and this thing just captures the look of New York at the time in a largely ungentrified area. But the sound's the thing and I have played this more than any other DVD. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Religion of Dylan
If you belong to the Religion of Dylan, this is a five-star item. For the rest of us, this is a pretty good concert movie spliced with long episodes of hippie profound talk. The music makes it worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proof that Dylan is "the master"!
"The master" at acting like a conceited prat! A "master" at complicating a simple situation with self-righteous, snotty, santimonious drivel while making fun of people who he deems are intellectually inferior to his royal self by twisting their ideas and words around to suit his assault on them. He seems somewhat taken with Alan Price who was there to 'brown-tongue' .. or maybe Alan had nothing else better to do, because he had just been fired from The Animals. Price DID get drunk and throw a glass out onto the street much to the annoyance of Zimmerman... he also opened a bottle of beer on a piano keyboard taking a chip out of the instrument showing total lack of respect for other people's property. I guess obnoxious prats stick together, huh?
5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan vs. Donovan
This DVD was a fascinating view into the life of the greatest song and dance man of all time. The music video of Subterranean Homesick Blues is humorously primitive, but none the less, captivating and enthralling. After watching this movie I will never throw glass out of a window or wear a Dylan shirt to a Donovan concert again. If you like Bob you will love this DVD. It is a true necessity to any self-proclaimed Dylan fan. It's worth the money to see Bob and his manager make fun of Donovan. The tension is hysterical. I also recommend to any Dylan followers to buy his book "chronicles pt1". It's so well written I began to wonder if Bob missed his calling with that one. But then I remembered he released at least 10 albums worth seriously leaving your seat right now and buying, but none the less he is also an excellent writer. As for any Folk fans out there I also recommend buying The Newport Folk Festival DVD. Artists including but not limited to Bob Dylan, Donovan, Joan Baez, Odetta, Buffy Sainte Marie, Johnny Cash, Peter Paul and Mary and many more are shown performing at this infamous gathering. This, including comments and footage of the crowds, builds a feeling of unity that has quickly diminished in this overly unappreciative world. Buy it and you'll long to be there, I guarantee it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Is this DVD out of stock?
I'm not lucky enough to own this product, but I just did a search on it to compare its contents with those of the I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, which I do own, and realized that the DVD is currently only being sold by external users and sellers, and not by Amazon itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Document for Madonna's Times
16 years after this documentary was released, and Madonna is still with us.Has anything changed? She's had kids, maintained musical mastery of her work and kept on chugging.
3-0 out of 5 stars fun but dated

5-0 out of 5 stars John Lennon in His Own Words
"Imagine" is a feature length documentary about John Lennon's life, centred around the "Imagine" recording sessions, but also featuring footage from the Beatle era, his marriage with Yoko, his "lost weekend" period and a few home movies, all the way to the year of his death. It uses John's own voice as narration, taken from the hours of interviews he did throughout his life, and features alternate and remixed versions of his songs as a soundtrack of sorts, as well as interviews from all sorts of people, from Sean Lennon to George Martin. Though it's not as detailed (or as long) as say "The Beatles Anthology", I still think it is a really fine look at John Lennon's life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Essence of John Lennon's Life
"Imagine" is a warm beautiful celebration of John Lennon's life as told in his own words and the words of those who loved him and supported his mission. His idealism is prominent, but so is his charismatic personality and comedic interchange with the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Relationship of High Fidelity
This film is fascinating on several levels. First, the viewer gets an inside look at a highly creative, extremely disciplined, classical music string quartet in rehearsal, in performance, traveling together, and at home with their families.
4-0 out of 5 stars What It Means to be a Guarneri
Fans of the Guarneri Quartet will enjoy this chance to go behind the scenes for a glimpse into the world of this fine musical group. However, anyone who loves classical music and has even an inkling of the time, commitment and struggle involved in playing it well will appreciate this film as well.Rather than try to paint a cohesive and tidy picture of the Guarneri, director Allan Miller has wisely chosen to let them emerge as they are - four strong, highly opinionated individuals who are still in the process of evolving with the music they play.3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
The Guarneri's cellist has now retired - the quartet is in a new phase and I'm sure they'll continue to evolve, in spite of a recent savage review in Strad. They're one of our great quartets, and I recommend any of their recordings.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid addition to the collection, but with some drawbacks.
I've been a tremendous Police fan for years, so I was quite excited by this title when I first heard about it. In many ways it delivers, but I also feel it could have been stronger.
5-0 out of 5 stars Born too late.....
How I wish I could have seen these guys live!!!!I guess the closest thing to that is this video, although I would LOVE a DVD version. An extremely good effort considering there is not much video available for The Police. Will keep my fingers crossed for a reunion of these talented musicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sting - a staple of the minivan CD player.
The Police where a great group for a few years, and this video adequately captures that magic.More importantly, I think it shows that Sting's arrogance is the reason The Police no longer exist.Read more

Editorial Review

Produced as the title segment to a six-part series, this 90-minute documentary traces the evolution of jazz from its 19th-century origins in New Orleans's Congo Square, where slaves first introduced American listeners to the complex rhythms and earthy textures of African music. How that cultural diaspora combined with European and American folk, classical, and popular styles to become jazz, "America's classical music," is an oft-told tale, but it's handsomely served here by an intelligent script shaped by veteran jazz journalist Chris Albertson, and a well-chosen array of performances:Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Lunceford, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and Gil Evans all appear, representing as complete a pantheon of major innovators and influences as could be hoped for.Period footage, including both stills and rare film clips, and interviews with musicians and scholars round out a portrait equally appropriate for hard-core jazz fans and novice listeners looking for a point of entry. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Jazz
I teach a Music Appreciation course and this dvd was ideal for the introduction to jazz in this setting.I use more of the Ken Burns series in my American Popular Music course, but this dvd is an excellent overview. I ordered the dvd to have shown in class when I had to be away, and it was just right. If you are completely new to jazz, it's a good place to start. There is a good bit of attention given to bebop and basically ends there; I do wish that some had been given to jazz-rock and bossa nova. But in a dvd of this length, there is no way to cover everything. If you are fairly well versed in jazz already, you probably want something more comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for survey-of-music courses
I use select bits of this video in both my Jazz History and Music Appreciation classes.Having real musicians talk about (and play!) the music really draws the students in, much more so than just talking about the players and seeing them in the book. The video is well-planned, well-directed and exceptionally well thought-out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Overview of Jazz
The best 90-minute look at jazz you can imagine. I used this in my music class and the kids were engaged all the way. Interviews are to the point and fun, clips are great. Hard to imagine a better succint treatment of the history of jazz. Highest recommendation! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun! Drum along!
Congas, Djembes, Ashikos, Dumbeks, Council Drums, Cowbells, Shakeres and every other form of world percussion is presented here on tape in play along format. This video brings back memories of my happy hippie days and "zoning in the domes" at UC Davis. Everyone has a percussion instrument, and they are in a circle having a great time playing together. The infamous wild chickens of UCD are dancing around the circle. Geodesic Domes are the backdrop, an old university experiment in alternative housing. The rooster has too much competition for noise and is going nuts. This is an out of decade experience. However, if you can get past your 21st century biases and pick up an instrument, like I have seen many children do, it can be extremely fun. I teach world percussion and do school demonstrations. The children are eager to participate.Along with demonstrations of foods of the world, this is a great inroad to international understanding for school age children. Each peice on the video is broken down into four for four core players. On screen sheet music preceeds each peice. The group is comprised of 12 to 15 people, from novice to advanced. Everyone is contributing whatever they can offer.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars lip synched mac attack
i cannot imagine any Peter Green fan liking this. It should have been called "Why Peter Green quit the music biz". The performances aremostly lip-synched. A complete rip-off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rattlesnake Shaker
Peter Green looked oh so uncomfortable throughout this video of mostly Milli Vanilli Mac performances from early European TV shows. One wonderful exception is the band's appearance on Hugh Heffner's "Playboy At Night" TV show. Heff makes incredibly vacuous "conversation" with someone at the mansion while segueing into an intro of the band. The camera pans to the Mac surrounded by Bunnies, Peter Green in his "Jesus" attire, grinning from ear to ear as they launch into..."Rattlesnake Shake"! Early reality TV! Surreal!4-0 out of 5 stars Not much but good
This is the early fleetwood mac, so if you are a Peter Green fan this is a must. The only problem is that not all the songs that are advertised in the back of the video ara actually played, no black magic woman, stop messing round or green manalishi performances here, just collages. But there are also some very good live performances of oh well, world keep on turning, and like crying like dying. And some lip-synch as well in albatross and man of the world. But overall is great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Interesting, Absurd & Totally Rockin'!
This is a video documentary of the making of the Short Bus Album and the resulting 1 1/2 year tour around the world to promote Short Bus (Filter's hit debut album featuring "Hey Man Nice Shot). There are some hard to find music videos contained on this video (Hey Man Nice Shot, Dose, and Jurassitol) and a bunch of live concert performances, including "Hey Man Nice Shot", "Dose", and "Stuck in Here" (there are more but I can't remember all of them, but the live scenes comprehensively cover the album). There are also scenes from when Liesgang and Patrick recorded the album in an impromptu studio designed by Patrick and located in a rented Cleveland house. Some great interviews and behind the scenes footage of the making of Short Bus, the selection of the band (including Geno and Frank - they keep changing the drummers!), and highlights of the tour, including, Leisgang getting popped in the mouth with Geno's guitar handle on stage, the boys chucking beer cans out a hotel window in Portugal, and Patrick and Frank getting a tetanus shot (fans of Richie Patrick will particularly like this scene). Great interviews, funny scenes, insight into the band, awesome music, and great performances. Stuff for both diehard Filter fans (whose collection won't be complete without this video), and fans who like good rock music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lou Reed
I really enjoyed this DVD, I have always liked Lou Reed's music but did not have much of an understanding of his history. This is a good documentary style DVD that gives you a feel for the man, the times and what influenced his music. Interviews with friends, colleagues and other artists give you a good feel for what he is about. If you like his music and want to know more about the most difficult person to ever interview this is well worth while.

Lou Reed's Rock n' roll Heart documentary is a sensitive and revealing look into the prince of darkness.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lou the Artist

5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring and informative video about the Pre-Fab Four!
Let's just say this... if you've ever wanted to learn about The Monkees, or maybe you were interested in listening to thier music, then this video is the best incentive... PERIOD! I've watched this video many, many times, and I tell you, it's still as interesting to watch as the first time. Hearing Davy, Mike, Peter and Micky talk about Jimi Hendrix, the making of "Head", the many musical performances of "Daydream Believer", "No Time", "Randy Scouse Git", etc. make this a must for any Monkees fan or even potential Monkees fan. And just as the credits come to an end... the viewer is rewarded with an extra 20 minutes or so of interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Patient...and You'll Be Rewarded!!!!
A great documentary that relives the Monkees story until 1997. The video isn't narrated. Instead, bits and pieces of interviews from several key players are strung togeter to tell the Monkee story. These "key players" include ALL FOUR of the Monkees, Don Kirshner, Ward Sylvester, and many others. One interesting facet of presenting the Monkees story in this way is that each of the Monkees' interpretation of what the Monkees were is a little different from the other. Also, many videos and clips from the show are included.5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonders of Monkee Land
An amazing conglomeration of all things Monkee.A knock-me-to the floor live performance of Listen to the Band and Mike singing, all on his own. What more could any real Monkee fan ask for?A video worth owning if not for the information, at least for the music, in its entirety, throughout the course of the film. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD ?!?!?!?
I must say, this video provides some of the best vintage Buddy Rich footage I have seen in any production.I am interested to know when the DVD will be coming out with Part 1 & 2 together.I hope there will be additional footage, pictures, etc. that we Buddy Rich lovers will be able to check out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Too Fast
What I liked most was that it included a lot of video of Buddy in the mid-60s, just as he was moving into mainstream prominence.Like a lot of teenagers at that time, I was blown away by Buddy and his sensational band, and this video takes me back to those exciting years when the band wasfrequently on TV.A highlight is a performance of the band on the"Away We Go" show, which I watched religiously back in 1967. Wish we'd had video recorders back then!In an published review of thisvideo, the writer talks about Buddy playing a drum solo using two sticks ineach hand. After watching the clip, it was probably the case that Buddywas just too fast for the film, and each stick blurred into two.But it ishard to tell!God bless those people responsible for this series--only byseeing Buddy, can one appreciate his true genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultural evolution
This excellent documentary reveals the evolution of Chinese performance of Western music between the seventies & ninties. Stern is regarded as one of the greatest vioninists but this DVD shows his great humanity, ability to communicate and sense of humour. The first segment shows Western music being played in a mechanical, inhibited way. The second segment twenty years later shows an amazing transformation that confirms that music is a universal language. Stern's interaction with the children is particularly moving. I can wholeheartedly recomend this DVD to all lovers of beautiful music. It is a powerful celebration of the human spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming Experience
I saw this video on PBS years ago and the impressions have always stuck with me. The DVD adds material from 20 years later, as well. A musician should have this DVD and I also recommend the other Isaac Stern DVD that is a bio of his life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Connoisseur & The Indifferent Will Like It, East or West
Indeed, as he said, he used "music as his passport to go to China", and it's not a "concert tour", but a "how-do-you-do-trip". Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars inside look at E street band
This was a very good look at a band that clearly are friends. The dynamics in the studio are amazingly loose.Clearly Bruce had it worked out in his mind but let the band members bring their own creativity to the process.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful!
This DVD is exactly what I hoped it'd be.Intimate.
5-0 out of 5 stars A collectors dream...................
This a nice little edition to my collection of Bruce films. I bought this the day it came out, very good and very insightful on how the songs are created. Bruce just comes into the room and starts playing the songs while the other guys are taking notes, its like a classroom on how to build a song. Its like Bruce wants them to find a way to make the song sound good with there ideas.... hes very generous in that way...I thought it was cool the way he treated the gentlemen with the version of Secret Garden with the strings on it, he treated him decently even though that pompus idiot Bob Clearmountian didnt like it, glad he was outvoted...I personally liked the strings version myself...anyways buy this , you will like it.... ... When a jazz musician plays a solo that lasts for a full 15 minutes, notone of which is less than inspired, powerful, and entertaining; and when helater, in the midst of an inventive and witty unaccompanied solo, exuberantlyleaps from the stage, breaks his heel in the process, and continues to playRead more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough music
While this video starts with an amazing performance at a stone quarry in Saugerties, New York; there's just way too little music. In a video I don't need to hear critics drone on and on about what makes Sonny great. That ought to be self-evident from the musical content. There are also interviews with Sonny and his wife that could have been condensed and offered as a "special feature."The japanese orchestral performance was interesting but, really, I'd like to see the rest of the Saugerties concert.Overall, there's maybe thirty minutes of worthwhile footage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sonny's playing makes up for some poor cinematic technique.
This 101 minute performance and documentary is taken from material mostly from 1986 (although there is a short clip from Sonny's "Jazz Casuals" appearance in the early 1960s). It features two very different performances: Sonny's working quintet and a special performance with an orchestra in Japan, "Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra." I have not found the latter released on CD.
