2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible movie, but the Kesey interview at the end is a jewel
This movie was a big disappointment. In some sense it shows the worst of the scene that followed the Dead in their latter days. It's noteworthy that there's _no_ music by The Grateful Dead in it - I understand they refused to allow any. However, the short extra at the end, " A Conversation with Ken Kesey" is one of the clearest and most concise expressions of what the Acid Trips, and the Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia at their best, were about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent countercultural documentary, with its flaws
I just saw this on ...TV and I was really surprised to see something like this on television to begin with. I am not a Deadhead (but do enjoy the lifestyle of many of them), but Tie-Died: Rock's Most Deadicated Fans is, for the most part, an excellent documentary that shows life at a parking lot before a Grateful Dead concert. Plus it plainly shows that the countercultural scene was still alive and well in the grunge and alternative rock dominated culture of the mid 1990s. But just be careful not to believe everything these people being interviewed are saying. On numerous occasions, I found what they were saying a bit insincere, but there were still quite a few people who not only sounded very sincere, but had very valid things to say. They seemed to put a large emphasis on the under 18 crowd, for some reason (although they interview enough people who were old enough to been there in the 1960s, to not be totally biased), perhaps because people are surprised that they'd chose this lifestyle, instead of the grunge/alternative rock lifestlye. The documentary also showed a few people who were becoming disillusioned with the lifestyle, which I don't blame them if they keep getting bad vibes, in fact that's the one thing that brought down the original countercultural movement by 1970 (like the Altamont riots in December 1969, and Kent State in 1970), and you could tell from watching Tie-Died, that that attitude could bring down the current generation of hippies (which it did come 1999 with the disgraceful, greed-driven event known as Woodstock '99). So basically you get a combination of good and bad vibes throughout the documentary. But there were some fundamentalist Christians as well in the film, three guys with beards, if I remember right, who were trying to convert some of the kids to Christianity. They liked to brag on the success they had, but there's no proof. Another disturbing thing was someone mentioned how much jail time you would serve for just a gram of LSD, and that multiplies for each gram you have. Makes you wonder if America is really a democracy, or a police state after you hear what was said on the documentary. Because of the increase of undercover police officers, people advised never to buy and sell LSD at a Dead concert. I have some objections to this film. They tended to make the hippies (particularly the young, under 18 crowd) as completely stoned and unbathed, but liked to show the older hippies (the ones who have been with the Dead since the beginning) as sober and clean. In other words, it would have been much nicer if they showed some of the younger people a little more with it. Basically this documentary won't give outsiders (non-hippies) any better opinions about hippies, although I'm glad to see that the cops you see were rather surprised how little trouble these people at the Dead concert created. Plus I'd like it better if they also included some footage of the Dead playing, and historical footage as well, to compare the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, with the 1990s. This documentary is also a sad reminder that these were some of the last Dead shows before the untimely death of Jerry Garcia. I took a star off just because of some of the flaws (and the occasional stereotyping of hippies), but it's still a great documentary on the counterculture movement, the way it was in the 1990s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Say No
If ever there was an anti-drug film, this is it, without even trying to be.The young women obviously strung out on ecstasy are complete dolts.Did the hippies have ecstasy? The sober people who also enjoyed the Grateful Dead concert were very clear headed and talked about how much better the experience was without drugs.Since drugs contributed to many Dead deaths over the years, it is amazing that some people think they must enjoy the music by getting high.Think about how much better life in general would be with all of your faculties on go.The video is very good, except for the tacked on "A Conversation with Ken Kesey," which just has him rambling into the camera. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bad Religion Riot Video
I heard about this cool video online so I purchased one. It was great. the show was from the CSUN Devonshire Downs. All oringinal line up with Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz,Jay Bentley, Pete Finestone, and Greg Hetson. Thecamera work, video quality and sound was great an A+ The riot footage wascool lots of broken glass the firemen hosed down the fans, helicoptersflyin all around. It was broadcast on ABC's World News Tonight in 1990. Ifyour a fan of Bad Religion get yourself a copy and take a ride back intime. You won't be sorry. Definately a collectors item .

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Religion the Riot of 1990
My friend and I just watched this video, it was one of the best raw punk videos I've seen in a long time. I remember seeing the riot footage on all the news channels. It was great to see this video. I remember onlyPennywise got to play, NOFX and Bad Religion were cancelled. The Firemenclosed the show down and hosed off all the kids. The concert footage of BadReligion in this video is from the singer Greg Graffins old school--CSUN,Devonshire Downs. I really enjoyed the performance, and the riot footagetoo! If you have not seen this video you better get them quick, I thinkit's hot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Religion Riot answer
Thought I would let everyone know more about the riot--in this video you 'll see a 35 minute show from 1988 at CSUN--then we cut to a 15 minute uncut raw riot that transpired from inside the El Portal Theater in NorthHollywood California when the L.A. Fire Dept., shut down the show, theninto the streets--lots of broken glass , a fan gets his arm sliced up realbloody, then carted off in the ambulance, and the L.A. Fire Department hosesdown all the kids, over 1000 fans --this footage was shown on ABC WorldNews Tonight on 12-31-90, and seen by over 100 million people worldwide--This year in 2000, marks this video's 10 year anniversary, and forhistorical value is a great purchase for all Bad Religion fans of all ages.I hope this helps--RW ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Free Tibet concert should have been literally FREE!
There is an aura of apathy with nearly everyone in attendance from the people to the bands that this is just another venue without any special purpose. This is just one of the few building blocks that crumble beneath director Sarah Pirozek on her feature documentary. She attempts to create this world where artists perform because they care about the immediate cause while, all the while in front of an audience that is ready to learn nearly everything they can.Free Tibet is to represent the joined hands of the music industry, a world full of terror, and the knowledge of the youth of our nation. It is to show that with the right message, anything can happen thanks to popularity and publicity.Well, I would hate to tell Pirozek this, but this was not the message conveyed in this documentary. What I witnessed was snippets of the bands performing their more popular song (to aquaint those for a brief moment with an artist that they may not know by name but by tune), massive amounts of audience members surfing through the audiences and banging their heads to the music (not so much learning about Tibet), and finally intermixed through all of this are random bits of unconnected information about Tibet and the horrors that they are facing. There is no wonder, at least in my mind, why one of the concert goers merely said, "I care, ya know, but short attention span."It was the same way that I felt about this film. There was no coherent structure to this film only visual proof that while a good cause may be the point of the concert, the overall effect is something completely different.
3-0 out of 5 stars Monks, music, and more...
Now, when I got this it was because I love concert videos of all types, but it also shows some information about Tibet and the Tibetan cause.Although this makes sense I did not think that the Tibetan cause would be so interwoven into the video of the concert. It was not dull and definitely put a different perspective into what would be thought of as just a good concert. For example, interviews with the monks about the concert, and interviews with the fans about the Tibetan cause diversified the concert video.Overall, it was just okay, with definitely a varied group of artists. From Bjork to the Foo Fighters to John Lee Hooker to Beck and more you will hear a wide range of styles. Most of them only sing one song, except for Beck who does two, so if you really want to hear a lot of songs from one artist sorry, that is not how they did it.So if you like seeing concert videos, and/or you are a free Tibet person than I recommend it, otherwise it's not the greatest, just average.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's So Sad
There is the potential for an important message to get across, however people are too selfish to realize it. The worlds most peaceful religion is threatened by a communist regime and people can only think about seeing some cool bands. Free Tibet now, and worry about the music later. It is cool that these peopls showed their support but it overshadowed the true cause. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars saying farewell to The Master Signifier
Mahler's Ninth Symphony is arguably the final resolution,a codicil to the finality of the Symphonie(Master Signifier) of Mozart of Beethoven, and Mahler,so Bernstein tells us, knew of this responsibility. The structure of the Ninth has a fascination, not so grandiose(ending in an Adagio, nothing triumphant here),simply a document on the state of life, in Vienna it seems, Was their any other reality worth contemplating in 1908=1909??, I think not. It is a Symphonie of the surface, the sensual pleasures,of contemplation, reflection for good and bad of Vienna, the metropolis obsessed with sex, naivity, entertainment, science,of the mind in love with itself, affectations, expressive afflatus of enormity, as Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Freize, introducing the hidden dark pages of the psych, primordial, primitive. Mahler loved the simplicity of childhood, of lifeworld purely untarnished still with the hope of resolution,of fulfillment, this is the citadel of the Romantic, obsessed with the uncontrol of time, of not knowing how to manipualte time's passage, orthe the future,of refusing it, Mahler's art was one of looking backwards. As Adorno had said Mahler's music saw no great innovations, although he had intuitions on the relevance of Schoenberg, but failed to understand it fully.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I watched this movie in History class last week, it was one of the best movies i have seen. And it's hard to get a high school class to all watch a movie without falling asleep, but this one is one that kept everyone awake,it was very educational learning how people were really treated and whatkind of life they lived. I would definately recommend this movie to anyone.

I watched this video some years ago, and even now, I remember how much I learned from it, and how much I enjoyed it, as well as how much I wept for the sorrows of the young cast members.Sarafina itself is a tale of theterrible history of apartheid, and this video, with interviews from thecast, all from South Africa (all of whom were first-hand witnesses to thehorrors perpetrated by the former government) is even more affecting thanthe musical or the movie.I can't think of any reason not tobuy or watchthis poignant, moving film.I can only say that you'll be very sorry ifyou don't. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
this tape wasnt at all what i expected.i expected to hear a lot of good punk bands.instead it is a lot of bad hardcore bands. i expected to hear a lot of ltj, mxpx, bad religion, etc.i didnt get that.it is a lot of talking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Film On Punk Rock
I don't agree with the TRL thing, i think the film did a pretty good job showing 30 or so bands in a hour. i'll admit that i bought the film to see blink-182, but finishing it i was turned on to some of the other bands. ifyou want a taste of some cool bands out there definitely check out thisfilm.

2-0 out of 5 stars A great student film, but an unsatisfying commercial one
I was really let down by this movie. The film maker seems tosuffer from what I call, "Total Request Live" (TRL)syndrome... he cannot seem to show a band performing for more than 30 seconds before he cuts to something else. Those of you who buy the video hoping to see some great performances by the Bouncing Souls, MxPx, H20, or any of the more than 30 other bands "featured" here will be seriously disappointed.I think the filmmaker simply spread himself too thin for a 1 hour and 5 minute movie. Also, the interview segements are pretty lame.I mean, how many times do we need to be told how great the punk/hardcore scene it because "there are no rock stars", or because "it provides such a great release"?Unfortunetly, that's about as in depth as most of the interviews with the bands get.Why don't you tell us something we haven't heard a million times before? I would have liked to have heard more about the stories behind each band, personally, sort of like what was done in "The Decline of Western Civilization" or "Another State of Mind", two far superior documentaries about the punk rock scene. The film picks up when it ventures beyond its superficial coverage of the bands and moves further into the behind the scenes aspects of the punk community. The segement about the 17 year old punk chick who works as a concert promoter is pretty cool, as is the part near the end about a (literally) underground punk club being run in the basement of a suburban New York home. Unfortunetly, these segements are too brief, and take a back seat to all the talking head soundbites and concert clips.Overall, "Release" is just too unsatisfying to recommend very highly. It just doesn't have enough depth to satisfy either the fans or those with a casual interest in learning more about the punk scene.END ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A total Bore
I just wasted $15 bucks on an absolute piece of trash video.I love Creed and its music.I consider myself a big fan, and foolishly bought this video dispite the warning on Creed's home page about the poor quality of this video.I watched 15 minutes and had to turn it off because it was SO incredibly boring. No concert footage and no Creed music. All they show is still shots of one of their concerts, and they use the same 10 pictures over and over and over and over again. Then there are interviews with bar owners, DJs, and their pre-fame sound guy, all saying how the band "was so incredibly special" and they all miraculously knew Creed was going to make it big.Yeah, right.Don't bother buying this video.

1-0 out of 5 stars Creed: Unauthorized
Even if you're a huge fan, do not buy this video. It's a cheap cash in on one of America's up and coming rock bands. No music, interviews from obscure angles and second rate djs voicing opinions will have you reachingfor the off button long before you reach the end.

When you are a young dancer-in-training, the dance world can be very cruel and confusing. It is easy to lose sight of your goals and the reasons why you are dancing in the first place. 5-0 out of 5 stars Again, Opera is Magic
This movie is so charming and captivating, I was spellbound until the end.You don't have to be an opera lover to be fascinated by the stories of these singers who would love to be in the spotlight, but for the most part are part of the musical background. Each vignette is unique, and the personalities are so varied. But each has the goal of glorious singing, and we can't help but care about their struggles to "make it".See this film!!And spread the news.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Sometimes One Grieves Forever"
We received an email from Allie Light at San Francisco Public Library several years ago. This is part of her message: "My late husband, Charles Hilder was an opera singer and music teacher. He dies of cancer at 33. This documentary is about his life and the lives of other singers. The film is a way of saying goodbye. Sometimes one grieves forever."5-0 out of 5 stars Get a Life, Opera Buffs!
One of the most painfully hilarious documentaries ever made. This is the real-world progenitor of Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman" and is one of those extraordinarily rare examples of life besting art. If you don't see the gut wrenching poinancy of these poor chorus schleps giving it their all, each with not inconsiderable talent undercut by a tragic flaw--epitomized by the one baritone's comment that God had played a cruel joke on him by making him loud, but unartistic--you just don't get what life's about. A great documentary that works on many levels; GET THIS MOVIE! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect companion to Straight Life autobiography
This work was made in 1982 which was the time of Mr Pepper's post smack post prison renaissance documented musically on the wonderful 16CD Galaxy Box Set issued c1990.Although the film is only 42 minutes plus credits there is nothing superfluous on it and for a music lover, the live performance of PATRICIA is worth the price of the DVD.But Mr Pepper is also an articulate, honest individual and the viewer is made privy to his bedroom, his dreams, origin and meaning of his tats, his eating habits, upbringing, and prison experience et al.I've never tired of his music and this DVD is a complementary and essential document for one of the most expressive, talented musicians of the last century. He says in the film: "I'm a genius. I don't know anyone who can play the alto better than I can at this moment." The amazing thing is, I didn't wince when he said this. He may have been right. He was also quite a funny guy with a self-deprecating wit.

4-0 out of 5 stars This DVD is a Great Document Of A Great Jazz Musician
I came to like Art Pepper later in my musical journey. I was always more of a trumpet fan, having only come to appreciate the saxophone after hearing John Coletrane or Cannonball Adderly play on Miles Davis records. Point is, I was never a huge fan of the sax. But in 2001 I stumbled upon a cd in a library, "Art Pepper Thursday Night At The Village Vanguard" and it sounded so real, so raw, and yet so polished that it actually PUTS you in the legendary club for the gig. You can almost smell the cigarette smoke, the booze, hear and feel the people around you, pressing in to take in the live jazz, done by a genius. I then purchased the rest of the cd series, "Friday Night", "Saturday Night" and "More For Les". These Art Pepper discs contain masterful playing, captured at a peak of sorts with a rhythm section that put the songs first, not the solos. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must See For All Jazz Fans
This is a wonderful memory of a battered genius that was able to come back one more time and make an unequaled contribution to the jazz world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous all-round
If you have the slightest interest in russian opera, you just can't miss this. In surprisingly good images and sound (the material being several decades old but carefully restored), in this two-part documentary you will be presented with gems from works all too little performed in western opera houses and from singers the tragic confluence of the Stalin terror and the second world war mostly prevented from travelling west; actually, most of the featured singers will be known in western countries solely from recordings licenced by western companies after the war.
4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
I received this video as a gift a while back and finally got around to seeing it.I did not have high expectations at first, but as I watched it, I found it to be pretty good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Footage and Brilliant Singing from Moscow
Not only is the vocalism of these exceptional glimpses of historic Bolshoi performances stunning, the video contains scenes from Glinka's operas "A Life for the Tsar" and "Ruslan and Lyudmila," as well as a scene from Dargomizhsky's "Rusalka." Tapes of these works cannot be found in the West; thus this video is also an important historical document. Other offerings are from the more-to-be-expected Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky operas. A remarkable bonus is a performance of Gremin's aria from "Eugene Onegin" by Marc Reizen at age 90 (!), still in tip-top vocal form. The overview of the other virtuoso singers is just as thrilling. For anyone who likes good singing, this tape is a MUST! ... Read more
