5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults and kids alike
This video covers all types of cats.It tells you what makes them all similar, and what makes them different. It provides loads of facts and enhances that content with excellent production value.I always value a video I can watch with my children and we enjoy it together -- this fits the bill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Roar!
We got this tape as a promotional freebie, and I probably wouldn't have thought of buying one of the DK videos otherwise, even though I and my family are great fans of the DK books. However, having seen the Cat video, I am inclined to purchase some more. While in some respects it is a lot like any animal program you might see on TV, the DK "white background" technique and computer animation makes it unique. A lot of information is crammed into the slightly over half-hour video. If you like the DK Eyewitness books you should check out the Eyewitness videos.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A documentary that doesn't seem like one.
Does the obligatory marvelling at the vastness of the pyramids but also shows the drama of Howard Carter's finding of Tut's tomb, the looting done by Western powers interested in building up their museums and the work done in modern Egypt to preserve their own past.

Editorial Review

George, Dave, Ray, and Rodney. Not a singing group, but four real-life individuals dedicated to controlling the entities that don't take kindly to their efforts. George Mendonca is a topiary gardener who spends his time taming tendrils of plant life into animal shapes. Why? Because he can, and apparently it's no easy job. One slip of the clipper and a green and leafy body part can go bye-bye for years. Dave Hoover takes on big cats under the big top. An admirer of the famous lion tamer, Clyde Beatty, Dave comes out of the lion ring covered with sweat. Not from working hard, but from hand-trembling fear. Ray Mendez, a mole-rat expert, waxes eloquently about the social structure of these sightless, hairless natural wonders who wear their teeth on the outside of their lips. But if you want to see a real wacko at work, watch Rodney Brooks, a robotics expert who is convinced our extinction will be the first step in a takeover of tin men.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The mark we leave on the world.
In the guise of a movie about four eccentrics with strange jobs, Errol Morris has made a very moving picture about the mark we leave on the world. Each of these four people have four very will have different legacies. It's about why we do what we do, how we came to be doing it and who -- if anyone -- will do it after us? Of course, Morris, by making the movie, is leaving a permanent record, not only of himself, but of these four.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
Fast, Cheap & Out of Control is a thoughtfully composed look at the work of four men and how their lives are poured into what they do.In the begining, the audience would be hard pressed to imagine how these men and what they do could have anything to do with one another. We start seeing the passion that directs them and the discipline that maintains them. Each man begins speaking, in specific terms, about his interests and how those interests relate to what he does professionally.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best documentaries ever
This would make a perfect companion doc to Grizzly Man, as every one of these men have a similar control/unintentional subject relationship to their particular obsessions - especially with the lion tamer who never forgets what he's dealing with and serves as an interesting contrast to the protagonist of Grizzly Man who allowed his delusions about his relationship to the bears to kill him.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I thought that this video would contain information about the actual town, the people who live there, the interests they have, the isolation they muct experience, what the town looked like.Instead it's focus was primarily on the Aboriginal people and the drought. While this was all important and basic to Alice Springs, I don't think that it should have encompased the entire video--there was nothing about the normal, average people living there, nothing about the town--no tourist stuff in other words. While not, perhaps, meant to be a tourist video, I do think that showing some highlights (surely there must be some) of this unique city might have been shown.I did not need to learn about the aboriginal drinking problems or quite so much about the one major station owner.

Come meet Mark Twain. OK, true, the humorist has been dead for more years than we care to remember, and not many of us around today were alive to hear what he sounded like. But Hal Holbrook is so spectacular in his one-man performance that you could swear you were listening to Twain himself. The gravelly voice, the lined face, the slow shuffle, and cigar-induced throat clearings seem so natural that you'll have difficulty recognizing Holbrook beneath the white suit, the gray hair, and the handlebar mustache. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best material, but still a great performance...
Those of us old enough to have seen Holbrook do his one-man Twain show in the 1960's, and to have owned the original cast recordings "Mark Twain Tonight" and "Encore: More Mark Twain Tonight" know that this 1967 television version featured second-rate material. Yet second-rate Twain is still better than most comic/philosophical writing. (There was also an original cast recording of this show released.) Now there is a CD on Columbia Legacy called "Mark Twain Tonight" which combines some producer's idea of the best of each of the three older records. I would have picked some different bits if I had the task, but overall that is pretty good and well worth the money. Since this DVD is the only thing available showing Holbrook as Twain when Hal was still young, playing Mark at the age of 70, it will have to do. If you are a real Twain fan, or a real fan of one-person stage offerings, this should be in your collection...but get that CD also, before it goes out of print, for some even better material. In the TV show, the one mistake was spending too many of the 90 minutes on the more "serious" side of Twain---the anti-war social criticism aspect of his works. Don't sit down to watch this and expect it to be all laughs, all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hal Holbrookmesmerizes as Mark Twain
Much as Mark Twain had to do in his life, Hal Holbrook mesmerizes audiences with his portrayal of Mark Twain, the first stand-up comic this nation has ever known.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning achievement; *outstanding* nature video
This video looks at Denali wildlife through four seasons, primarily focusing on how the animals struggle to adapt to extraordinarily difficult weather conditions, seasonally limited food supply, predators, and anannual brief period of voracious insect life at Denali National Park inAlaska. It illustrates the balance of nature vividly.I cannot imaginehow the videographers themselves endured these severe conditions to obtainsome of the incredible footage found in this tape.I have visited Denaliin the summer and found this tape, which also looks at the other threeseasons when Denali is largely devoid of human visitors, fascinating.Bewarned that there is some animal-death footage (a moose calf is stalked andkilled by wolves); I mention that only because some people don't want tosee that kind of thing.Animal death occupies a very small part of thetape, however, and to omit it altogether would not do justice to a storyabout a place where animal lifespans are naturally short. There are veryfew "signs of man" in this video (no narrators strolling throughthe bush on camera). You get the feeling that you are there observingnature, alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great nature film!

5-0 out of 5 stars The making of Estranged
I was able to locate 1 copy of video IV in the trilogy.I must say that though I purchased this video over seas and had to have it transfered to DVD so that I could watch the video (the entire lot came out to about $110) I would do it agian. Without this video, there is no understanding the band, the songs, the albums or, and for me most importantly, Axl. With his description of what this song means to him and why exactly it is not the "ending" of Del James short story "Without You" I came to realize that it is part IV of a trilogy because though it is the third video in a set of three, it actually is part IV...Del James short story "Without you" is part III. The word fan does not do justice to the person who propelled by something else locate this video and watch it to understand the entire picture, then go one step further and begin looking for the book "The Language of Fear" by Del James (which is no longer in print) to read the story of Mayne and Elizabeth which inspired Axl Rose to write November Rain and Estranged...as well as inspired his soul to be who he is now. In short, money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the absolute greatest GnR video
This is a great, great video. For the most awesome song.I searched for this video when it first came out, asking the record/video store every week of they got it in.I practically wore it out the first week or two.Had to get another! The making of doc. is very cool. Gives you some insight into what Axl was thinking, etc...There is only one problem I have with this video - the title. Can anyone tell me why noone at Geffen, or GnR or heck, anyone who put this thing together, didn't realize that IV (as in part IV) means 4?And how can there be part 4 of a TRILOGY?Trilogy is three, count them, three parts.Sorry, I just don't understand. If it was a mistake, you'd think someone, somewhere would have caught it. And if it is part 4, where the heck is part 3??? Or am I missing something?Anyway get this video.Get all three of the trilogy: Don't Cry-part 1, November Rain-part 2, and Estranged-part 4 (actually part 3).Greatest set of videos ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent video about a superb song
This is the crown jewel for anyone who has set aside some time and tried to understand what GnR and Illusion are about. This video is a documentary about the third song in the Trilogy (Don't Cry, November Rain & Estranged) and is certainly the most emotional song I can think of.If you're out to buy your first GnR-video, then I'd probably go for a different one. "The Makings of Estranged" puts it all into context and you may probably understand why "Illusion I & II" differs quite a bit from Appetite and GnR Lies.Axl breakdown is exposed in this video, but without his breakdown GnR would probably just have been "any other slammin' rock-band". Somehow this band were doomed from the beginning. This is the crown-jewel. For any serious fans: Buy it!!You won't regret it!(I paid more than 120$ for my copy and I'd do it again!) ... Read more

I enjoyed Eyewitness desert. But it was perhaps a fraction less interesting than the other Eyewitness videos and this is why I rated it down one star. In EW-Desert, several pertinent facts about deserts are discussed: where they are, how people (and animals) live in them, and the historical significance of deserts.5-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness - Desert (VHS)
Eyewitness videos are one of the best series we have found so far, and Desert is our alltime favorite video of the series. These videos are based on the Dorling-Kindersley books of the same titles. Each episode combines educational information and vivid imagery for all ages. Our toddler has become fascinated by the "ships of the desert", camels. Martin Sheen narrates this series and does an excellent job. At the end of each video, there is a small segment which explains some of the trick shots and difficulties in filming. Charles Kuralt was the poet of small town America the way Vin Scully is the poet of Dodger Stadium.Relaxed, warm, folksy and deceptively insightful. He had a way of setting you at ease and somehow convincing you that the entire cosmos could be found in the minutia of this one fleeting moment. His beloved little program, 'ON THE ROAD' (1967-80) in which he traveled the backroads of America in a motorhome to show us the real heart of the country was eagerly anticipated by countless people every weekend - myself included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tigers of the Snow!
Ever since I first heard about this documentary off of a preview for further National Geographic programs in January, my brother and I have wanted to buy it. Finally, at the tail-end of July, we bought it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well-made and interesting documentary
Superb footage of these very elusive, nearly extinct cats in the Siberian wilds. Typical National Geographic production, which is to say: well made movie, nice and clear narration, clear photography. For those of you who are into watching live chases of prey by predators, there isn't much here. But you won't be bored by the documentary at all. There are many riveting moments when you are holding your breath to see what's going to happen next. This is certainly a DVD to buy and keep.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT UP TO THE STANDARD OF DOWNFALL BUT PRODUCED 30 YEARS EARLIER

1-0 out of 5 stars The Most RIDICULOUS Portrayal of Hiter Ever
Having watched the four "bunker" movies (Inside the Third Reich, The Bunker, Downfall and Hitler: The Last Ten Days) I can say beyond a doubt that this is not only the briefest, but the worst of the lot. If Hitler with a British accent doesn't turn you off the lame performances from the rest of the cast will. The script is 90% fiction with Hitler saying one moronic thing after another that he never actually uttered or doing things that never really happened, such as Eva committing suicide after she and Adolf have an argument. Pure fiction. About 10% of this film is old archival footage which serves only to slow down the story and waste valuable time when it is already in very short supply and needed to explain a quite complicated story. Without having read any of the books about the last days of Hitler ("The Bunker" being the best) the average viewer will learn very little about the final days of Hitler from this film and will probably just end up being quite confused. Among many things it was almost impossible to pick out who the characters were among the many actors running about in two hours of general confusion. If you really want to understand what the final days of Hitler were like and need to do so in a film I'd check out "Downfall" or "The Bunker". "Downfall" is probably the best but requires patience as it is only available in German language. For those of you with less patience go with "The Bunker". "Inside the Third Reich" is also a great film although it covers the complete life of Albert Speer, not just the bunker and Hitler. Whatever you do, do NOT pay some preposterous price for this garbage movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Death Rattle of an Empire
'Hitler: The Last Ten Days' is the oldest of the three best known films of Hitler's final days, spent in an underground bunker as the Soviet army deals the final death blow to the Third Reich in late April and early May of 1945.The three films beg comparrison as many contain almost the exact same scenes since in one way or another they all take advantage of the same eyewitness accounts.

5-0 out of 5 stars the ferocity of nature
Anyone who thought chimps were vegetarians will be aghast to see a pack of them hunting down a cute black and white colobus monkey in a very systematic manner, and tearing it to pieces as it screams; it is disturbing to watch this "mob violence and blood lust" as writer and host David Attenborough puts it, but fascinating in its truth of the natural world, which juxtaposes the most cruel violence with beauty; in no scene is this more evident than with a whale off the coast of Argentina, mercilessly playing with its catch, and doing so with such grace, flipping the seal in the air with its tail in a dance of death.
