5-0 out of 5 stars Footage to be remembered.
Eyewitness Shark is one of a number of excellent videos made by this studio. The footage is absolutely breathtaking, even tranquil in some clips. As you would expect, the video is about the life history of the shark, and some myths along with it. It also explains that humans have always misunderstood these animals as cold- blooded killers. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Movie about Sharks

Upon the African continent lies Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, themiddle of an extinct volcano with conditions so optimal for animal life that there are 20,000 beasts crowded into it. But the very conditions that allow the animal population in general to thrive also make it difficult for theindividual to survive. This drama is played out time and again in this55-minute video, as viewers watch a nervy lioness enter a hippo enclave tomake a meal of one of their dead or as hyenas attack and kill a cub from arival family. Newborn wildebeest are up on their feet within minutes ofbirth, running within the half-hour, and yet one in four will perish.Photographers capture images of the Masai who (legally) bring their herdsinto the protected area for water with apparently little effect. Juxtaposed are images of picnicking tourists on the canyon rim laughing as aggressivebirds steal their sandwiches. The documentarians don't hesitate to indict the visitors and the 100 vehicles a day they bring to the canyon rim forthreatening the isolation of this unusual place and its wild way oflife. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of African Plains Wildlife
This one hour video provides a good overview of the inhabitants of the African plains ecology by focusing on a relatively small region with a fairly dense wildlife population, the Ngorongoro crater. As explained in the video, this crater, ten miles across, supports permanent populations of many species by virtue of its year round water supply.3-0 out of 5 stars Not out of the ordinary

Our girls started with eyewitness Planets and our collection has grown. They love this video. It shows insects up close and explains a lot of the"ickiness" about them in a format that is interesting to children. Our kids are less intimidated because the understand why spiders spin web. They are fascinated by them now, instead of afraid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beethoven Lives Upstairs
This Emmy-winning film is visually beautiful and moving, and also very accurate historically. Like the boy in the movie, a real-life young boy named Gerhard von Breuning enjoyed a special relationship with the composer while residing nearby. As an adult, von Breuning wrote about his experiences in a book titled after the name of Beethoven's building, Aus dem Schwarzspanierhaus. The talented actor who plays Beethoven (Neil Munro) looks remarkably like pictures of Beethoven from this period in his life. Much of the dialogue is drawn from Beethoven's own letters, conversation books, and other writings, and most of the action really took place. The musical score includes performances of Beethoven's masterpieces by some of the best international performers. This is one of my favorite DVDs, and very popular with friends to whom I have lent it. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay.
This movie was okayish.I would've rated it a four out of five if the same things didn't happen over and over again. Another thing is, those kids were wrong about Beethoven, he was a cool person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but could have been better.
I teach music to K-4 and we watched this in all of my classes. It was entertaining, but I could have done without all the violent outbursts by Beethoven toward the housekeeper. The kids really did seem to enjoy the music and asked if there are other movies we can watch. It's a great way to introduce young kids to classical music. They were very excited when they recognized a song written by Beethoven himself. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Is not the Cheryl Ladd movie!!!!!
Ok 1 star is because is not what i thinking will be!! Yes on you information about the video you wrote that this is a movie with Cheryl Ladd, but is not!!! This is an intimate portrait of the lovely and adorable Grace Kelly, (fot the documentary 5 stars), but is not what i would like to have!!!!!
3-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE GRACE KELLY, but not this film
i am a true GRACE KELLY fan.i have seen all her films and i almost have every biography so i feel confident enough to say that this film did not do justice to the life Grace lived. Now i didnt expect the film to tackle every element of her life or career but this movie still left out a lot.it is known, no matter what biography you read, that Grace was quite promiscuous in her early years in new york. And she had several affairs with her leading men(such as clark gable, one which the film shows, ray milland, william holden, and even bing crosby fell in love with her) but the film fails to even touch on these relationships.this movie tried to make her appear to be so innocent and angelic.i dont want to see her reputation dragged through the mud but i do want to see the truth.there is a way to tackle those moments in her life without resorting to trashy direction, but i guess that would require good direction and a good screenplay. the movie also failed to show how famous she became within the five year period in which she became a star(1952-56).the film 'fourteen hours' which was really her first film debut is never even mentioned.and the movie never payed any notice to the fixation that alfred hitchcock had for her, which i think would have been an interesting development to see. the academy award scene was just awful.there was no tension(everyone wanted judy garland to win the award), no excitement and no joy in her winning.when i read GRACE by robert lacey i actually felt excited for her and nervous and almost shed a tear when she won and thats just a book.the wedding to prince rainer was rushed and the ending was weak.i didnt like the film ending at the wedding.i was just really disappointed with this film.i expected so much more and i was let down a great deal.but cheryl ladd did an ok job as grace.THE THREE STARS ARE FOR GRACE, NOT THE FILM.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but formulaic
I caught this on TV the other night while suffering from a bout of insomnia. It didn't put me to sleep, which is a good thing, and made for a pleasant diversion.Cheryl Ladd is lovely and luminous as Grace Kelly, butis given little to chew on acting-wise.That's true of the movie as awhole: it looks great (costumes, make-up, and hair are marvelously done)but skates along the surface. We get the usual tough-as-nails butheart-of-gold dad, who is distant emotionally, and the string ofrelationships Ladd goes through before meeting Mr. Right. There's no meathere, but at least the picture doesn't dredge up the worst possible detailsabout Princess Grace and parade them about -- there's a degree of respectfor the subject. It seems to follow the standard TV bio-pic formula; it'salso shot with that gauzy filtered-lens look common to made-for-TV moviesof the early 1980's.Enjoyable if you're in the mood. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Series (and that's saying something!)
This is by far the most powerful of the well-done series. The Maya are explained so well in this short video that I've used this as the yardstick to measure all other Maya movies that I run across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Teaching Tool
I use the Lost Civilizations: Maya video with my high school students. The video uses reenactments, computer generated animation and contemporary site footage of several Maya city-states (Tikal, Palenque, Chichen Itza)to provide a solid general overview of Maya history and culture. A more detailed video chronicling the Maya would be very desirable, but, Time/Life does a more than adequate job in the scant 48 minutes of this video. As an introduction to the Maya the video is well suited. There is coverage of the ball game, blood-letting rituals, the Maya writing system and calendar as well as the central role of kingship to Maya society. The video does not make the mistake of stating that the Maya collapsed. It is accurately illustrated that althuogh there was perhaps a regional collapse (for various reasons: drought, famine, war, disease and loss of faith in the king)the Maya continued to thrive in other parts of their realm and in fact still exist today. Not for the advanced Mayanist, but a strong tool for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is known about the unknown
This 48 minute video is part of the Time-Life Lost Civlizations TV series, with Sam Waterson narrating. It uses video of acutal locations, some with reenactors depticting the scenes from Maya life, as well assome computer generations; all put together is a very professional, entertaining way. There may be a few inaccuracies, as many things about Mayan life and langauge are unknown and still debated, but is a great video for someone who wants and overview of what we know/think about who the Mayans were and what their lives were like, a people who developed a calander so accurate that today it is only 33 seconds off; a people who built massive, beautiful pyramids and buildings in the rainforest jungle without metal tools or the use of the wheel, whose langauage and history was wiped out almost totally by the Spanish conquistadors and their preists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD
this movie is a great show for kids
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed in this video. I bought it to use with a group of Cub Scouts (3rd grade) who are earning their Weather Belt Loop. I love weather, but this video is boring! The exciting things that kids want to watch -- tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, etc. -- are just barely touched on in short video clips. The video skims the surface of weather and doesn't linger on anything long enough to really entertain OR inform you. The recurring motif of the rotating rooster weather vane gets really annoying after a while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good video, for kids
This was a very good video, but I don't watch TV and was therefore unaware that its format is suited for young people: kids and young adults. 4-0 out of 5 stars A disturbing wake up call
The People Bomb is a set of 10-15 minutes CNN news reports about several dimensions of the global demographic explosion, mostly in the Third World (notably India). It provides very powerful images depicting basic butfundamental problems. Even if it was broadcasted in 1992, the problemsdiscussed are even more acute today and of high relevance. For instance, the global population reached 6 billion in 1999 (5.4 billion in 1992: Whois overpopulated?) and the issue of the missing female population (SonMania) has now reached 100 million, most of them in China and India, according to some sources. It is an excellent video to be presented inclasses covering population and development issues. I would howeverrecommend it to a more mature audience because of the sensitivity of somescenes: e.g. abortions and infant deaths. Particularly effective for abored, materialistic, selfish and careless student audience that plaguesmost colleges and universities today. 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful trip from home
Tasha Tudor claims that her "whole life has been a vacation". Watching this video is like taking a trip with her to a different place and time and coming back with a renewed spirit. While I also enjoy "Take Peace" - especially during the Christmas holiday season -"Take Joy" is a wonder for it's aesthetic qualities and insight into the private life of a noted illlustrator as well as a valuable reference tool for the gardener. It mirrors the same tone set in the three "coffee table" books about Tasha Tudor done by Tovah Martin, Richard W. Brown, and Tasha Tudor. This short video is artistically crafted, giving the viewer a glimpse into her private life: her kitchen, her gardens, her dollhouse and marionettes, her books and illustrations, her family history through photographs and some vintage film clips, her sense of humor, her steadfastness and her self-sufficiency.5-0 out of 5 stars Tasha - True Artist, True Child
If you need to be refreshed, this is the video for you.Tasha Tudor is child inside artist and she succeeds in introducing a charming world to the viewer. Her garden, her art, her life philosophy is fresh and reminds us all what life is made of.It really refreshs the spirit.Oh that we all were as young and new as Ms.Tudor.If you want to give a really great gift, give this video.Itis true gold.

Editorial Review

This brilliantly constructed documentary presents the story of Klaus Barbie--head of the Gestapo in Lyon, France, during the Nazi occupation--by amassing interviews with those who came into contact with the notorious war criminal. The many interviewees speak at length (accountingfor the documentary's total running time of more than four hours), and an image of Barbie as both a real person and a symbol of evil slowly emerges. Those who knew him as a student profess to be puzzled over his later reputation, but a woman who served in the French resistance and was beaten nearly to death by Barbie solemnly recounts the hideous tortures he inflicted on her. 5-0 out of 5 stars "The word 'Nazi' doesn't exist"
At almost 4 1/2 hours long, "Hotel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie" from director Max Ophuls thoroughly examines the career of the man who served as Gestapo Chief of Lyon during WWII and earned the name "The Butcher of Lyon" for his various crimes against humanity. The filmmaker painstakingly disassembles Barbie's life from his early boyhood, his Nazi career, through his post WWII activities, and the new life he established in S. America. While the film ostensibly concentrates on the life of one man, Ophuls subtly, and successfully makes larger statements regarding fascism--a phenomenon so widespread that Barbie managed to successfully convert his Nazi resume to further his career prospects with post WWII CIC activities and also leap into bigger and better things in rightwing Bolivia.
5-0 out of 5 stars There Are Documentaries: There ARE Documentaries
This film is a great masterpiece.Despite the nominal subject, Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyons" during the occupation of France by Germany during World War II, it delves deeply into a much broader subject.Master filmmaker Marcel Ophls, so unpretentiously and with a mastery of English, German, and French, takes us back in time to the days when the Gestapo Headquarters in Paris was at the train station--Hotel Terminus--still standing with its moniker in the 1980s.He follows through interviews with famed French Nazi-hunters the Klarsfelds, to Barbie's bodyguard in South America, to Germans associated with the Germanization of Bolivia...around the globe, the story of the lowly Barbie from childhood to trial as a War Criminal in France in the 1980s is told masterfully--even with an occasional note of sardonic humor.Could it be otherwise?

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary on Coastal Killer Whale Behavior
This video is an excellent documentary that covers a variety of killer whale populations in various coastal environs around the world. Here you'll see killer whales who individually chase salmon off the coast of the Pacific northwest, and others who join into larger groups to use cooperative techniques for catching herring off the coast of Norway; in the southern hemisphere, you'll see groups that hunt for elephant seal on island beaches in the southern Indian ocean, and others that use similar techniques to catch sea lions on the beaches of Argentina. In between the hunting scenes, there is footage of these whales enjoying social interaction or pebble massages, along with brief discussions from various scientists that study these intriguing creatures.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary
This is a brilliant documentary capturing the breath-taking killer whales in all its glory. The whale's hunt for salmon and seals around the world is captured by awesome cinematography. I have used this video in a humanities survey course for several years and have had great success with it.It illustrates ancient Mesopotamian culture fairly well and serves as a fine transition into a discussion of the epic "Gilgamesh" which we read immediately after the film viewing.Students seem truly to enjoy it as well; just yesterday a student asked if she could take it home to share withher family.I think it spends so much time on the comparison of Biblical text to Mesopotamian text because that is the major theme of the entire video, to illustrate the intersections and interactions of the ancient Israelites and the Mesopotamians through their archaeology, historical documents, and mythology.I have two objections to the video: 1) the opening and closing seem fairly corny to me and to my students and make very general speculations compared to the very specific evidence inside the content proper; 2) the use of old silent film footage of the flood or Babylonian cities detracts rather than adds to the quality of the film. This is an objection I have to videos in the entire series and not just this volume.

2-0 out of 5 stars By far the worst I've seen in the series.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the other videos in this series, but this one was unfocused and more than a little boring at times. Rather than focusing on the accomplishments and personalities of the Fertile Crescent, it looks at some of the archaeology that was done nearly 100 years ago and then makes spends an inordinate amount of time comparing Biblical texts to Mesopotamian records.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informal introduction to Jung and universal archetypes
"The World Within" is a sequel to an earlier documentary, "Matter of Heart: The Extraordinary Journy of C. G. Jung Into the Soul of Man."Unlike the first work, this one is intended to present a more personal look at Carl Gustav Jung and the people he trained, many of whom were still living and were interviewed for this work.Actually, "The World Within" comes in two points.First, there is "C.G. Jung: In His Own Words," which examines Jung's Red Book, one of the dream journals in which he recorded images from his unconscious.Director Suzanne Wagner matches up these striking images symbols drawn from nature and every religion, with Jung's own words. The result is a provocative presentation of what Jung called "universal archetypes," which served as the visual touchstones for his theory of human psychology. The striking footage of trees, crosses and everything else creates a synthesis that does away with individual philosophies in favor of something much more fundamental to the human condition.Even more memorable is the footage of Jung explaining his ideas in pleasant conversation (circa 1978).In "Remembering Jung" we have the remembrances of the man by his students along with the engaging stories of anthropologist Laurens van der Post, who recalls the personal side of Jung, who had an endearing sense of wit and a great feeling for the "rejected feminine" in both men and women. The result is a fascinating balance between the concepts and the personality of Jung, who emerges from this documentary as much a real human being as he does a brilliant thinker. In many ways, it would be better for anyone interested in the foundations of psychoanalytic thought to begin with this documentary rather than "Matter of Heart," which looks more at Jung's contributions and stresses their importance rather than articulating them in a clear and concise manner.A must see for those seriously interested in Jung and his life's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I watched it several times in the few days since it arrived. This video gives a real picture of what life in the Alaskan bush can be like.Although there's not an abundance of formal teaching, it's very informative seeing how these bush families live, eat, hunt, get supplies, and get along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going beyond the movie...
This movie so touched my life that I was often left wondering what became of these people. Well, now I know. There is a book called "The Final Frontiersman" by James Campbell. He is a cousin of Heimo Korth and wrote the book in 2002 and had it published in 2004. This book is a must for anyone who loved this movie and wondered what ever happed to these people. You would be surprised to hear what they are up to now.
5-0 out of 5 stars BravingAlaska
Braving Alaska is a must for anyone who loves the great out doors; my wife and I loved this movie so much that we watched it over a dozen times if not more.My wife and I fish, Hunt, Camp, Explore and more and this movie was great to watch. It shows how people can survive in the wilderness and live off the land and not abuse it.If you are an out doors person or just love the great out doors I highly recommend this great adventure video.I wish they would make a second part to this video. God Bless America. ... Read more
