5-0 out of 5 stars A must for train enthusiasts!
This video is a must for train buffs! It has everything a trainenthusiast wants in a video:solid information coupled with stunningfootage of some of the most interesting train runs in the world, as well asclips from "the good old days" of railroading. The videoprovides a good historical perspective of railroading and the advent ofsteam engines, moving along briskly to bring the viewer up to modern times.Because it was produced in the early 80's, some of the material may be alittle dated, but a true rail fan won't be bothered by this aspect.Thevideo is produced in the classic informative and easy-to-watch style whichis the hallmark of National Geographic Videos. If you love trains, youwon't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Documentary Ever Created!
This documentary is one of the best making-of documentaries ever produced. The voice re-enactments helped give the documentary details that I heard in only one other documentary but these details were far more interesting. The re-enactment of the first preview of the film was the most stunning. There was even great detail about how the parts of Rhett and Scarlett got cast. The screen tests of Linda Watkins, Frances Dee, Susan Hayward, Joan Bennett, Jean Arthur, Mary Ray, Lana Turner, Vivian Leigh, Paulette Goddard, Margaret Tallichet, and Anita Louisealso made the details about the casting more interesting than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
This documentary is both cleverly done and very entertaining. We all know how GWTW turned out but the story of how it was made is fascinating. David O. Selznick was nuts--- mad scientist nuts mixed with Motzart nuts and he just about drove everyone involved mad as well but he made a great movie. Can you imagine Erol Flynn as Rhett or Paulette Godard as Scarlet? Although Flynn was only in the running for the role for the blink of an eye Paulette almost got the role but luckily she lacked ambition and something in Selznick just made him keep on looking for a Scarlet until Vivian Leigh came to America.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great piece of film
This documentary was liking watching a newsreel of the time and the place where the stars were working and promoting this wonderful piece of work. It's historical and quite memorable of the achievement in the film itself which behind the scenes also had its dramatic twist and turns. ... Read more

"Vesuvius slumbers, but his heart is still awake," wrote one scientist about southern Italy's Mount Vesuvius. Active for more than 17,000 years, Vesuvius wiped out two nearby towns in A.D. 79, with a blast 10 times greater than Mount St. Helens's 1980 eruption. Pompeii and Herculaneum were lost beneath gravel and ash until relatively recently. Now archaeologists consider Pompeii the largest preserved site of the ancient world. In this hour-long program, originally released in 1987, much is methodically explored. In Herculaneum a baby's cradle, delicate hand-blown glass, and a lunchtime meal are all intact. How did ancient Romans live and how did Vesuvius kill them? Viewers will learn all this and more about the last moments of life near Europe's most active volcano. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and Informative
Actor Robert Foxworth narrates this National Geographic film on Mount Vesuvius which has erupted some 50 times since it's major eruption in 79 AD that destroyed two Roman cities and also threatens modern people who live around the volcano today, despite modern science efforts to study and learn how the volcano erupts and the warning signs to look for when a major eruption is near.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great video for entire family
This is one of my family's favorite videos. Kids as young as 5 are engrossed in the footage of Vesuvius and the remains of the city of Pompeii. My son's first grade teacher has requested this video to sharewith all the first graders in their study of Ancieng Greece & Rome

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tape for Beginners
This is a great tape for beginners. It shows you all the basic steps needed to start dancing socially. The steps are timeless even though the tape is a little dated. If you practice each segment on the tape you should feel comfortable enough to get started dancing in public- and that's the key to enjoying dancing. The first time you get on a dance floor you will want to show off your new talents. Buy the tape and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instruction vs. Inspiration
Clear instructions, but with a very "1950's feel".Everything appears very dated, not making one anxious to learn the steps and get out there and have fun.But the movements are well explained and shown clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to-dance tape
Margot Scholz clearly tells us how to dance. She shows the steps slowly at first and then faster with a partner. She covers the basics of form, posture, and leading in addition to the foot movements. She picks good rhythms that are easy to dance to.It is the best tape we found and my partner and I tried a good half dozen.Margot is the best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Insight .....
In Orlando, FL. back in 1996, I was so fortunate to first meet Larry Williams teaching at an investment conference (Bob comments briefly on Larry's success in His particular investment specialty in the movie) . Unfortunately I ignored Larry's too brief and humble comment about a Mt. Sinai book he additionally had on his website. I was shocked on a particular Friday one year later when Larry's new book on investment charting I had ordered arrived at the door- the EXACT NIGHT the 700 CLUB was having a telethon. I woke-up just in time to see Bob Cornuke (and a video trailer with Larry by his side; both off in world explorers mode) talking with Lisa the co-host of the CLUB making this INCREDIBLE VIDEO, along with Its companion- The Mystery of the Ark of the Covenant, available to the viewers.
4-0 out of 5 stars almost....
I loved this video, but i implore everyone who's seen it to watch 'The Exodus revealed'to see where the real red sea crossing took place. Both videos agree on the true location of Mt Sinai but the latter shows another land bridge north of this one surrounded by submerged chariot wheels-incredible!So if you put both videos together you will get the complete truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Favorite Biblical Documentary!
How do you get your elementary school kids to sit through a documentary about how we can believe the Bible? This show is more like a detective story with a middle-eastern flair! You may need to discuss with your kids that the explorers did use deception to get into the country (not very easy). But except for that blemish, the documentary is a very high quailty production, and interesting. My kids were so excited about the video that they 1) Begged Grandma to watch it, 2)Wrote a letter to Cornuke & Williams, and 3) Love playing the board game, "THE LOST MOUNTAIN OF GOD" based on this video.Watch after reviewing the story of Moses and the Exodus.Keep a globe or world map handy for some geographical references.Family education/entertainment with a message that God is awesome and the Bible is true! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Skeleton...Looking for a little more meat!
Purchased video to use as supplement for History Of Medicine class (4th grade). Was unhappy with the way things of a "mystical" nature were included in the material.I don'tunderstand how the Producers could justify including information on Tarot Cards in the video. After all, we were looking for information on Skeleton's, not an introduction into foretunetelling. Also,I didn't care for the many references to man's "evolutionary" process from beast to man.Again, wasn't looking for a intro. into the Theory of Evolution.5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old's favorite video!Very educational!

5-0 out of 5 stars Las Hurdes is absolutely shocking
I just watched Land Without Bread, or Las Hurdes, the only documentary directed by Luis Bunuel. The film is short, only 27 minutes, but it is long enough to portray enough human suffering to disgust. Images include a girl who lies in a road for two days and then dies. No one helps. The local schoolteacher instructs rows upon rows of malnourished children to respect the property of others. The schoolteacher feeds them bread, and makes them eat it immediately to keep their starving parents from taking it from them. They dip it into the only nearby source of water, a trickle running through a ditch where the pigs wallow. Bunuel illustrates with these sorts of images how these people are unbelievably pathetic, yet he clearly goes beyond this when he shows images of the developmentally challenged somehow teetering on the edge of life in a world where even the fittest can rarely overcome. "Morons and dwarves are plentiful..." says the narrator, but in some degree or other, all the people of the community are tragically moronic at every turn. They drink water from the ditch, yet somewhere within a reasonable distance is a river. They try to plant a crop, but the crop is washed away because they plant too near that river. They cook over an open fire indoors, but they don't make windows for themselves to let smoke out of their homes. They have no food for two months of the year, and yet mothers carry babies around in almost every shot. The viewer is left with the distinct impression that these people can't survive much longer, and there is certainly no optimism in sight when the film ends. How in the world can these people not plan a little better? The answer, I think, must lie in the intellectually suffocating nature of their hopelessness, the horrendous condition they feel swept away again and again along with every one of even the slightest currents of misfortune. Perhaps they've simply quit trying, it would seem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, but no masterpiece
Recently, I purchased and viewed my first Luis Bunuel film, Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned). The film is very good, including some incredibly poignant and unforgettable images. I then decided to purchase and view one of his earlier works, likewise considered a masterpiece of film, Un Chien Andalou/Land Without Bread. This is awful. A mish-mash of mush! Its only redeeming quality is its brevity. Once again, here we have a film that is given much more credit than it deserves, and I'm starting to think that the reason this often happens is that: a) the movies are old and therefore deserve respect for being "groundbreaking" b) they are "enigmatic," which is the critically vogue term for "confusing," which is often the polite term for "stupid," which when inserted into the VCRs of sheltered and myopic film critics can be enigmatically transformed into "intellectual." What's more appalling than this film is the praise that is heaped upon it. So the eyeball scene is groundbreaking. So what? It's not all that! I suppose lifting up the blanket--twice--to view the dead baby was likewise groundbreaking. Try disgraceful. Un Chien Andalou/Land Without Bread is a mongrelization of meaningless movie-making that belongs on some dusty shelf in some vault catalogued for historical reference only. You've been warned.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'Land Without Bread' might be Bunuel's masterpiece
'Un chien andalou' (1928) is the best-known film on this video and is a fascinating work in its own right, but the real masterpiece here is undoubtedly 'Land Without Bread' ('Las Hurdes'). As great as most of Bunuel's subsequent films would be, this 27-minute 1932 work arguably towers above them all. Calling it a documentary would not do justice to its unrivaled breadth: among other things, this film asks the questions 'what is a documentary?' and 'what is the role of the documentarist?', and this prevents us from using definitive, short-circuiting labels. In fact, no label could conceivably express this film's power. The controversy surrounding this work has three main sources: 1) some of the sequences have apparently been staged by Bunuel; 2) the impersonal narration seems in direct contrast to the pain and tragedy that unfolds on the screen; 3) so is Bunuel's choice of using Brahms's Fourth symphony as background music. For these reasons, cinephiles have been disagreeing for over 70 years about Bunuel's treatment of human and animal misery in this film. For me, his audacious technique creates a space - a window - between the viewer and the plight of the Hurdanos; it is this space that somehow transfigures their misery, rather than merely exploit it (as some have suggested). The film becomes a true initiation for the viewer: it provides a difficult, troubling but potentially life-changing experience. In the end, Bunuel's intentions do not matter as much as the impact his film can have on those who see it; and for this viewer, he has carved a moving, mysterious and ineffable work. ... Read more

Rupert Everett narrates this sensitive documentary about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals during World War II. "Paragraph 175" refers to the old German penal code concerning homosexuality, which was used to justify the prosecution of gay men during the war (the code ignored lesbians, still considered viable baby-making vessels). As mere rumor became enough to justify imprisonment, over 100,000 were arrested and between 10,000 and 15,000 were sent to concentration camps. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!!!
Now I own the (old) record, the CD, and the video. This is the greatest ethnic musical ever. I saw it first in New York in the 70's. Even though there were threats of violence, no one left the theater during the performance, and everyone left at the end - singing!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ipi Ntombi review
I had the wonderful opportunity to see the show Ipi Ntombi, and let me tell you that I was just mesmerized by all the dancing and singing, I would recommend it for anyone to see it, it was just awesome.I would love to see it again.A wonderful performance. Congratulations to the cast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does anyone see the cultural ramifications???????
I was amazed to see only positive reviews of this musical here. From a cultural/anthropological perspective this movie is horrific. It promotes the superiority of urban life and Christianity, and treats tribal life as silly, ignorant, and superstitious. The whole musical was created by a white mother/daughter duo, and one can only wonder about their acceptability to portray modern tribal life in South Africa and also their willingness to share the profits from such an expoitation of a culture with the members of that culture. Also, one cannot forget the date this musical was made--1974--before the crumbling of apartheid. Thus, this a skewed view of traditional African life coming from a racist perspective. It can only be compared to minstrel shows in the US in that it is viewed as fun and exciting, but really has some dark cultural ramifications. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource!
This 1991 documentary is a fascinating, 54-minute look inside the world of the Amish. Lovingly directed by Mennonite John Ruth, this film is a sympathetic look at the Amish, and succeeds in giving the viewer a more in-depth look at Amish life than most other films (and even books!). It looks at such parts of Amish life as farming, childhood, worship, recreation, courtship, barn raising, and even the impact of tourism.5-0 out of 5 stars Well done documentary
This was a very informative documentary.Although it was mainly about the Amish, there was also some information about the Mennonite community. As my ancestors were Hugeunots from the same area of ALsace-Lorraine as these two groups, with similar views, I found this very informative as well as refreshing. This was a very positive review of the community, so that any previous misconceptions someone may have had that may have ridiculed this group could be replaced with the reasons why they have endured for so long.We could learn from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful and very informative.
For learning about Amish culture this video is a must.Beautiful pictures of the lancaster county countryside take a step back in time and learn about why the Amish live the way they do.A young man who left the community at the age of 19 for the university guides you through this presentation and tells you about why they dress this way, why they do church at home and the video further explains why they use horse and buggy and forsake modern electricity. The people of preservation further explains about their swiss anabaptist beginnings and why they came to America in the first place.A wonderful view of the plain and simple life which is truly refreshing in our modern fast paced world. ... Editorial Review

Even as a child in the horse world, Monty Roberts was uncomfortablewith the conventional method of breaking, or training, a horse. He competed in rodeos for 22 years, all the while searching for a better way. Eventually, he learned it from the horses themselves. By watching wild mustangs, Roberts was able to identify some of their body language and apply it himself. A good portion of this 48-minute video is devoted to Roberts demonstrating his "whispering" technique on a mustang separated from the herd. His mission: to get the wild horse to accept a saddle and rider within the space of a few days--without force. Of course, he is successful. But knowing the outcome doesn't diminish the exhilaration of watching the dance between wild animal and gentleconqueror. Roberts used some of the same principles in raising his 3children and more than 40 foster children and now teaches his method tocorporate management groups. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He trained the Queen of England's Royal Horse Trainers
Monty Roberts trained the Queen of England's Stable Hands, at her behest. She ask Monty Roberts to come to England to demonstrate is techniques to Her Majesty and her Royal Stable Hands. The Queen went to the Royal Stables to watch him demonstrate his technique, on the horses her staff had selected. Her Majesty was so impressed with Monty Roberts and his techniques, she hired him to train several of her most senior stable hands.
1-0 out of 5 stars Only kids and novices are impressed.
Round penning is useful for some horses but is contraindicated for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the love of horses, Carry onPlease
I saw the vidio some time ago ( 4 years?)and was totaly impressed. As a young girl some 45 years ago I used to be very involved with horses and used a lot of Mont Roberts techniques although I never new it at the time. Many people commented on how horses trusted me and I could get them to do things that other people couln't.I just thought that they liked me and felt comfortable around me and just did what was expected of them untill my father told me that I had a special gift with them and to just go with the flow.I never realized until I read the book and watched the vidio just how special my connection was with the horses.Unfortunately I do not have any horses now, But my grand daughter has inherited my love for horses and wants to learn more about the training and handling of them, which I am really happy about.I want to get the vidio and book for her and I'm sure she will be wonderful.I saw how Monty Roberts spent so much time and patience to earn the respect and trust of the horses and have done the same as a young girl and nothing else mattered just as long as you could spend time with the horses and win thier trust and just be able to pet them and talk to them, never mind to be able to ride them eventually.I saw how they would respond to different tones of voice and body language and would act accordingly. It was wonderful, how I wish I could go back to those wonderful carefree days.Maybe my grandaughter will do it for both of us.I strongly recommend both the book and the vidio to anyone who really wants to learn about horses and to train them the right way with love and understanding.I am glad that Monty Roberts wrote the book an did the vidio so as to pass on the knowledge he has so young people like my grand daughter can get the benifit of his experiences and the tradition can carry on.Thank You Monty Roberts! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable and adorable Polar Bear Cubs
I first saw this show on TV when it came out and it made an unforgettable impression on me. It was touching, and if it were fiction could not have been plotted better. To watch these tiny cubs being rescued and reared by these incredible loving people, was an experience I haven't been able to forget. They are so adorable with distinct personalities you just fall in love with them.To realize after a while that you now also understand the sounds Klondike and Snow make and know what they are asking for is amazing. I have been searching for a copy of this since it first aired and am overjoyed to find I can now get a copy for my 5 year old granddaughter who loves animals so much. I highly recommend it for adults and children alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!
I first saw this documentary by chance on PBS, and I was so amazed with the twin polar bear cubs' story of survival as well as taken by how adorable the cubs were that I became a local PBS member expressly so I could obtain a videotape of it.And, unlike most of my videotape collection, I've actually rewatched this program (about 5 or 6 times). Now, I'm on Amazon to find second and third (and fourth and fifth...) copies as gifts for my animal-loving friends as well as friends with children.I highly recommend this documentary!

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving Two Wonderful Lives
Klondike and Snow - A Tale of Twin Polar Bears. This is an excellent, heart-warming story which is best shared with your family and best friends. The dedication of the staff of the Denver Zoo to these wonderful lives can be witnessed by the overwhelmingly powerful response shown by the citizens of Denver and the World in response to their being saved. It's a story of courage, dedication, and commitment by the entire community. Your only disappointment will be the tape doesn't last for five or six more hours! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A burning love in a burning war.
There are many questions without answers.Romanov's family was a family like others..Nicholas and his wife had a lifetime sticky relationship followed by romantic love letters. They lived in the era of 'noblesse oblige'(whatever they do,they are right), they enjoyed comforts, but out there...people were miserably starving and exterminated!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Nicholas and Alexandra
This is a very informational and educational presentation of the last Imperial Tsar of Russia and his family. I would recommend it to anyone who desires more knowledge of this extrodinary family.

5-0 out of 5 stars a grand sweep of modern Russian history in one volume
I could not put this book down.It gives the big picture.....the end of Russian imperialism and the beginning of communism...and then brings it down to the personal tragedy of the imperial family.I found myself grieving for them and wishing that they could have somehow survived.A thousand "what ifs" crossed my mind as I read this book. What if the Tsarevich had not been hemophilic....what if another country could have offered the imperial family assylum and had provided them with a way of getting out of the country before they were murdered...what if the Tsar would have been more in touch with the common Russian people...what if the Empress could have been more rational about her son's illness and about the insanity of Rasputin's interference in her husband's government. This book touches all the bases and has made a confirmed Romanov fan out of me. ...
