2-0 out of 5 stars Irritating crackling noises throughout.
I bought this video new.The story line is excellent. The acting is excellent. The scene in the courtroom is clever and excellent. The depiction of American history is excellent. The costumes are stylized and overwrought, as was typical during the earlier days of Hollywood. The film is an excellent teaching device for kids. This film was one of the eternal favorites of our parents' generation and our grandparents' generation. But there is a slight problem. There are irritating crackling noises throughout. Why is this? The crackling noises make the movie almost unbearable. I was only able to watch this otherwise excellent movie only once. I own about 50 videotapes, many of them bought second hand. Crackling noises of the same type occur on only one of these, namely, Three Stooges in Orbit, which I bought new.Can any of the reviewers of this product provide insight as to the source of the noises? Can somebody please tell the manufacturer that they need to do something about the noises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Biography!!!
Fox made a bunch of these Bio classics and they are all superb. This one ranks right up there with the rest and is fairly accurate.Henry Fonda steels this picture though. He is very funny in the few scenes he is in.A very moving story that is factual as well as entertaining.Another homeschool friendly flick...with a tad bit more romance than Tom Edison, but nothing like movies of today. An ejoyable movie for the whole family that could breed some good discussion afterwards!

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance and drama come together in this beautiful story!
This movie is a favorite classic! All the actors do a superb job at bringing together everything a good movie needs... suspense, romance... drama... good versus the evil businessmen... and it makes you feel good to watch it. I'm an electronics teacher and show this to my high school students who love the movie! (It is not easy to inspire kids these days!!!) I've seen it over 20 times now showing it to all my students, and still love watching it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Jungle
This is a Classic Movie, with a great cast, Eleanor Parker plays her part so well,I just love her,as for Charlton Heston, his part as the arrogant plantation owner is stunning, you just have to hate him when he first meets his proxy bride, and then later you understand why,This is a real thriller,so nice to watch a movie where there is no swearing or blatant blood letting, and yet it keeps you on the edge of your seat till the climax

4-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Jungle (aka Lanigen's Ants)
Charleton Heston and Eleanor Parker star in this movie about love and army ants.I believe it was originally released as "Lanigen's Ants".Heston plays a wealthy land owner with very definite ideas of love and marriage.Eleanor Parker is his mail order bride who enlightens him to what love and marriage should really be.The army ants are there to wreak havoc with his hard earned dynasty and to threaten their blossoming relationship. As a Charleton Heston fan, I really enjoyed this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Forty square miles of agonising death!"
The Naked Jungle's reputation rests on its last couple of reels, when plantation owner Charlton Heston battles the Marabunta, the twenty-mile long, two-mile wide army of billions of soldier ants ("forty square miles of agonizing death!") heading straight for the empire he carved out of the jungle with his bare hands. Well, his and the local natives bare hands. Of course, you have to get through an hour of soap opera first as the arrogant and virginal Chuck ("They have a word for men who go to the native villages at night. No one ever used that word about me") is more than a tad miffed to discover that after shipping new furniture and a new piano out to the jungle that he's been sent a second-hand mail-order bride in Eleanor Parker, despite her admonitions that "If you knew anything about music, you'd know that a good piano always sounds better if it's been played!" But then you have to expect that sort of thing when you marry by proxy (we learn that William Conrad, who played the Heston role in the earlier radio version of the original story, stood in for Parker!). Still, at least Ranald Macdougal and blacklisted Ben Maddow have fun with the script with exchanges like "I've been trying not to irritate you." "I noticed that. I find it irritating." It would have been good to have less of the matrimonials and more of the Marabunta, but the picture is great fun for both the right and wrong reasons and I can't say I felt short-changed revisiting it.

Editorial Review

As the Nazi war machine marched across Europe and Jews were rounded upand killed, a small town in France became an unlikely haven for the persecuted. The small village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, which was inhabited mostly by Huguenots (devout Protestants whose own history involved being persecuted), became a place where families took in Jews and hid them in their houses and on their farms. The villagers risked their lives, and their bravery is evident in interviews with residents who recall the Nazis searching house to house for Jews in hiding.Produced by Pierre Sauvage, who was born in the village while his parents were being sheltered, this documentary is a moving look at ordinary people who performed extraordinary feats. What is perhaps most impressive is how the elderly villagers interviewed on camera seem to think what they did wasn't very heroic at all, but rather a simple expression of their religious faith. It is humbling to hear them describe how it was impossible for them to do anything other than protect their fellow humans from great evil. This edition of the documentary is introduced by Bill Moyers, and also features an interview Moyers conducted with filmmaker Sauvage.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most heartwarming, yet least unsentimental documentary
I've ever seen.I first saw it in 1993, and have wanted to own it ever since. It's easy to think we would do the right thing in horrendous circumstances, but it is impossible to know until we are faced with that decision. The people of Le Chambon neither blinked, nor bragged. We could all be incinerated tomorrow: on which side of the good/evil line do we want to be?If you buy no other film this year, this should be it.I paid $40 for VHS with a smile on my face -- AND plan to buy more for Christmas and birthday presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Witness to the Power of Nonviolent Resistance
I watched this video in an ethics class in graduate school, and was struck by the simple faith of those Christians who thought it nothing special to put their own lives on the line in order to help their neighbors, the Jews. There are so many lessons that can be learned from what happened there that this video has great educational potential. It will help people work out their own thoughts and the implications of how they would act in that situation. I highly recommend this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars great children's nature video
Zoboomafoo is entertaining, funny, and packed with information about animals. The Kratt brothers combine just the right amount of silly antics with real educational material and close-up encounters with all kinds of animals.See also my review of Zoboomafoo - Look Who's Home. This is quality educational programming that won't drive Mom or Dad crazy -- highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kid pleaser
My 18 month old granddaughter is constantly asking to see "foo-foo" which is her word for this. She also seems to think it is an exercise video the way she jumps up and down with the various animals and imitates what she sees.Between learning animal names and what they eat and where they live and doing the movements, I don't think you could find a more educational video for the young ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars .
This is a good video.Kinda boring. It shows a cobra spit at Steve without sunglasses.I say wait until this comes on TV again.

1-0 out of 5 stars No way to handle venomous snakes.
Teachers and parents should be advised that Steve Irwin is far more interested in Steve Irwin looking daring than in young peoples' welfare. If North American kids try handling any of our resident deadly snakes the way Irwin does, they'll end up very sick or possibly dead. Even non-venomous snakes should not be handled this way.Of course, the video does not >advocate< children handling snakes in this fashion, (So the distributors of this series could not be sued!) but that is not how a young audience works. There is a considerable risk that if something appears cool, it is worth "having a try" on one's own.

1-0 out of 5 stars I still hate Snakes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun & educational but recording is of poor quality
This is a lighthearted, fun and lively video showing the daily care of horses. My two toddlers adore horses, and I couldn't wait to pop this tape in to capture their attention with live action. Though the scenes are authentic and there is much to learn from the animal's characteristics to how to bathe and brush them, the picture quality is so poor that it makes watching it in its entirey a real chore. There is a graininess to the video that doesn't change on smaller screens, so basically you won't enjoy watching along with your kids. The actors in the film deliver their lines in a way that truly seems rehearsed from script, but this won't matter to kids since they speak clearly and in simple to understand language. The music is very sweet too. They also incorporate special needs children in the film, which is a refreshing change. It's just too bad the film company didn't record on a faster speed tape to ensure clarity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clip Clop the Horse
I got this video for my kids to learn more about Horses since I am allergic to them. Both my sons are on the autism spectrum with the non verbal son really enjoying the songs on the video and how they take care of the horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Keith Richards of Jazz
In his younger years, Chet Baker was quite a good-looking man.In his final days however, he began to physically resemble Johnny Paycheck in the middle of a week-long bender. But the recordings ... the recordings!Fans will want to see this, and hopefully add it to their collections. And in the end, the music is all that matters.Until a better documentary is made, this intimate portrait - warts and all - remains a standout piece of filmmaking ... and probably won't be surpassed.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Dr. Alien is on DVD, anything can be on DVD
Silly that this documentary has not been put out on DVD.I have a VHS copy of this that I found at a thrift store. It is an amazing one, both content-wise and compositionally.Hurry up and release this on DVD...Thanks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this not out on DVD yet?
This is a great film, recapping the life (near it's end at the time the film was made) of trumpet great Chet Baker. If you are reading this you probably know the basics - rapid rise to jazz stardom in the early fifties, natural talent (self taught, did not read music) records landmark versions of "You Don't Know What Love Is," "The Thrill Is Gone" and "My Funny Valentine" (to name a few), develops a truly unique, somewhat androgenous vocal style (haunting does not do it justice) and then descends into a lifelong drug addiction (outliving virtually all of his cohorts who traveled the same road) which, over time, only adds to the legend. He never kicked dope and was fairly unapologetic about it.Moved all over the place in Europe(where he became something akin to a God in jazz fan circles - especially in Italy). In and out of jail - you name it, he did it.Of course, he had all the traits of a junkie - manipulative, selfish, focused on his habit to the exclusion of almost everything else....almost.He continued making great music, to one extent or other, up until the day he fell to his death from a hotel window. This film catches up with him near the end and contains great interviews with Baker himself, many of his former cronies, friends, lovers. It's shot in beautiful black and white and is really a stunning, unusual bio-pic of an amazingly interesting (but more to the point - talented) guy.Look close and you will see young Chris Isaak and Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Why this is not on DVD is beyond me.If you are interested enough in this subject to be reading this, go to ebay - occassionally it is available there on video.

5-0 out of 5 stars The proper way to make a documentary....
This is the way a great documentary is supposed to be made. This film came at a time when documentaries were few and far between, it remains riveting for every minute of its 251 minute length. It succeeds by telling a coherent story as well as an enthralling one. Most documentaries these days throw everything at you (in a hasty, sloppy manner), and load up their films with endless "talking head" shots. Then when they're criticised for it, they come up with the usual adage "it's up to the viewer to decide.". While the ultimate judge is the viewer, this is not a reason for a "cut and paste" approach to the film. This approach removes the narrative flow from many recent documentaries. This film tells its story so well and brilliantly, like a grand novel, and illuminates you on the Vichy government, and how it was really like to live and how complicated it is to live under an occupation. There are some historians here and there, but the film deals mainly with those who lived and fought the Nazis, those with the most at stake. That's one of the reasons the film is so riveting. It comes across as human, something many documetaries miss entirely. It's a great film. Its length means nothing, because you're never bored.A must...
5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar History.
Never in my life have I seen a film dedicated to the subject of Vichy France. I had long read about it but knew very little about the official pronouncements of the collaborationist government. I assumed that The Sorrow and the Pity was strictly a documentary about the French resistance, but was pleasantly surprised by its depth. It describes the Vichy of Petain and Laval quite thoroughly. You may recognize some of Ophuls' interviewees from The World at War (such as Edward Spears), but the stand out individual here was the fellow who volunteered for the SS. I assume he served in the Charlemagne outfit. Frankly, I was surprised he was alive and actually showing his face. His point that the slaughter of 1,600 French sailors by the English was a motivating force for him to join the Germans was something I would have never considered. It seems inconceivable back then for the French to have even hesitated siding with anybody other than England--given the competition--but it is clear that Anglophobia was rampant after "the rout" of May 1940. The most sensational thing about this film is the footage of the collaborationists. It seems as if modern history has made great attempts to cover up just how much the citizenry backed Petain (at first) and looked sympathetically to the Nazis. The speeches, the newsreels, and the photos are incredibly valuable and terribly interesting- especially if you're a history buff. I'd rank this one right up there with Hotel Terminus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and penetrating
Let me say immediately that this movie requires some upfront investment: patience, attention, and sympathy. It's not easy to sit for four hours and view "news" that's sixty years old. But once you get past the initial impediments, what you get is a clear window into events that are themselves clear windows into human motivations and their consequences. Ophuls examines one city, and examines how collaborators and resistance fighters played lethal chess. He interviews and probes. What emerges after the four hours is a weird sensation that you were actually present at the interviews--you WERE the camera--and that's the highest praise anyone can give to a documentary.

Zoboomafoo (pronounced Zah-BOO-mah-foo) is a wildlife series produced specifically for preschoolers. The show features great puppetry, fun songs, guessing games, and amusing animated segments. Hosts Martin and Chris Kratt are two animal-loving brothers who have befriended a lovable Lemur (puppet) named Zoboo and make daily sojourns to visit him in a rustic cabin called Animal Junction. 5-0 out of 5 stars AVery Educational video for young kids.
Unlike today's tv shows that only has violence and things not good for small childen, Zaboomafoo is perfect for kids little or big!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's videos
This tape is excellent. We do not get cable so our PBS channel does not come in very good. I got this tape for my 15-month-old. It combines the action parts of 5 shows on baby animals, so it is non-stop fun! There are over a dozen baby animals, whereas a typical show shows only 3 or 4 animals. This tape looks fantastic and sounds great too. The Kraft brothers look younger then on TV, since I guess they used older shows. Still it is just as fun and entertaining. A wonderful fun animal treat for the whole family, but your toddler will enjoy it most as it was intended. Buy this one and you will not be disappointed.

In 1996, with his public image at a low ebb after a messy breakup with Mia Farrow, clarinetist and filmmaker Woody Allen set off on a tour of Europe with his New Orleans jazz band. Accompanying him were his sister, his soon-to-be wife Soon-Yi Previn, and Oscar-winning documentary maker Barbara Kopple. Like Allen says as the beginning of the tour, "Theoretically, this should be fun for us."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry yet Quirky...
In all honesty, I found this film only MILDLY amusing because of the "voyeuristic" pleasure of getting to see Woody Allen "off camera" - - but let's face it, a documentary crew was following the guy around... so when you see him and Soon Yi chatting away in their robes in the privacy of their hotel room, do you really believe they're alone and unwatched and not trying to ACT as they want to be perceived...? So the question is, who was doing the acting ?Based on the fact that both came across as rather dull and uninteresting and I'm sure like many viewers I spent most of the film sitting (unfairly) on the edge of my seat waiting for Woody Allen to say something funny or be more neurotic my answer would be either neither or both, and perhaps the film was merely made to simple counter the bad image of Woody Allen that were going around at the time.- - "Wild man, my tookus !" the viewer is expected to say.- - If the film were to be compared to CRUMB (which I found delightfully entertaining, if not dark and depressing beneath its hillarity at times), in terms of interest it would be like comparing SPEED to MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.
4-0 out of 5 stars Music, fun, and an interesting look at being a celebrity
If you like music and Woody Allen, you will love this endearing documentary by Barbara Kopple. Go behind the scenes as Woody, Soon-Yi, and his band go on a European tour.Allen's wit and quirky but charming personality expose him for the humble and intelligent man he is.But, oy...his mother!

2-0 out of 5 stars Un-Wild Man Blues
Barbara Kopple's "Wild Man Blues" is decidedly un-wild. That's its first fib. It is the un-intense and un-penetrating chronicle of Woody Allen's 1997 European tour with his New Orleans jazz band. Released in 1998, "Wild Man Blues" came hard on the heels of a period of public scandal for the notoriously private filmmaker, prompting critics to dub it a "public relations corrective". There is a whiff of mendacity about this film. Its motive is abstruse and its meaning convoluted. It carries an air of constructivism. It smells like propaganda. Lurking behind an obeisance to jazz music is a salve for moviegoers' indignation over Allen's romance with stepdaughter cum fianc, Soon-Yi Previn. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great children's nature video
Zoboomafoo is one of our family's favorite PBS kids shows. It teaches about animal behavior as well as responsible human behavior toward animals. It is absorbing entertainment for our daughter without being annoying to the parents. While Barney, Dragon Tales, Sesame Street, and others send me fleeing to my bedroom to escape the obnoxious noises and pseudo-music, I actually enjoy watching Zoboomafoo with my daughter.Watching together and talking about what we have seen enhances the educational experience for her as well.We were so disappointed when our PBS station stopped carrying this show, but we are pleased to own three videos of it.We would like to see more of them made available -- we would buy them in heartbeat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner
The Zoboomafoo video series are a big hit in our house - the opening music is enough to get both kids leaping like lemurs!Zoboo himself is like a furry 5 year old - curious and silly, with flashes of brilliant insight. The videos are well done, and are entertaining to adults as well as to kids, even on the "umpteenth" viewing. The information contained in the videos is accurate without being pedantic, and the enviro-friendly messages are not overbearing.Any/all of the videos should be a part of a kids collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mind Blower!
Fahrenheit 9/11 just blew my mind when I saw it. It gives a complete new perspective on the politics of the US and on Bush's administration. The film's objectivity is not to be questioned, cause Michael Moore gives clear evidence on everything. This movie really shows what America is like in this new era and how innocent people die for its welfare. I am amazed that this film was actually released for the open public and that the author wasn't hanged on the street. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Movie-Well put together-Convincing
Out of 5 stars, I give it a 10. If you haven't seen it, you're missing the past two decades.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important Information.I felt like the media had lied to me.
Film footage was really important.I did not know that Bush had his car egged when he was inagurated the 1st time.I did not know that he was the 1st president not able to walk his last leg to the inaguration because of protests.I did not know because the bush administation had the media supressed at that time.I thought this movie was really important because it got out info for the 1st time that we could not see before.I would take a look at it and you can see things you did not see and know some things that you did not know.See for yourself. It is a rental now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Working together for excellence
After seeing this video, I came to realize how important communication is. When you are flying within 36 inches of each other, it is a must. I also saw how much saying I was wrong and I will do better the next time iscritical to staying alive. These men are men of excellence and the flyingwas awesome and the oneness exhibited was awe inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for all ages
My 2 year-old and I have watched this together at least 100 times, and we love it.I'm a pilot; he loves airplanes. As a former coxswain on the US Rowing Team, I was struck how much the emphasis on teamwork and thetraining routines had in common with the rowing community.Watching thisvideo made me want to give it to friends training for the 2000 Olympics, itreminds me so much of them.I recommended it to coworkers. The video andits world tour captures the optimistic feeling of universal brotherhoodthat reigned immediately following the end of the Cold War.You'll tapyour feet to the music. The flying sequences are beautiful. You come awayfrom this with boundless admiration for the pilots, the maintenance crews, the families, the airplanes and the whole program. For anyone associatedwith naval aviation especially, this video would be an endless daydream ofheaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This video allows you to get a never-before seen inside look into the selection process and show-life of the "Blue Angels"flight demonstration team; and it makes me proud to have come from a"Navy" family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Trek
A long time ago, an older man covered his tattooed body with a grass cape and put on insulated footwear to trek through the Alps. The RETURN OF THE ICEMAN did not take place until some 5,300 years later when he was found by hikers. The Nova team covers carbon dating and CAT scanning, deciding whether Austria or Italy had the stronger claim to keeping the mummy, and preserving the artifacts and the body. With the closeups of the iceman's tools and weapons and with the impressive mountain scenery, the video is in good company with Cathy East Dubowski's ICE MUMMY: LOST...AND FOUND, David Getz's FROZEN MAN, Ron Knapp's MUMMIES, Don Lessem's THE ICEMAN, Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's SECRETS OF THE ICE MAN, and Charlotte Wilcox's MUMMIES & THEIR MYSTERIES. Some of the scientists in Austria went on to help Dr Johan Reinhard with his high-altitude find a couple of years later (DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not too detailed but accomplishes (fantastically) it primary goal...
and that is to whet the viewer's interest reminiscent of more detailed mini-series like Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" and Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Origins."The series is concise and, very early, provides an excellent point of reference (literally) for those without any background regarding the universal and atomic scale.
2-0 out of 5 stars This movie didn't quite make it, I'd recommand something else...
This movie does give viewers a general idea of the universe, in a very conservative sense. It only contains material and topics based on traditional big bang theory.Personally, I disagree with alot of ideas presented in the movie.I think since this movie is relatively new (2002) and not created back in the 70's or 80's, it should atleast contain new discoverys and new theories such as Super String Theory. Therefore, I do not recommand this movie if you are seeking to learn new knowledge, as far as I can tell, the movie is based on stuff we knew back in the 80's.However, I would definitely recommand the following: (1)The Elegant Universe (by NOVA,PBS) and (2)Origins (by NOVA,PBS) Both are very very good!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Lamott is an inspiration
I watched this film after reading "Bird by Bird" and "Hard Laughter" and found that Anne Lamott was just as I expected her to be...funny, sentimental, sometimes emotional, caring, loving, kind, passionate and considerate. She truly is a beautiful person who has grown through pain and talks very candidly about her faith and what it takes to get to a place in one's life where it feels good to be alive.I laughed and I cried when watching this video and really appreciated her honesty about the things she has struggled with. She has a lot of strength.5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Anne Lamott!!
I love this Video!I am a Lamott fan and first heard her on a radio show.I was attracted to her wit and humor BUT that humor and wit (as with so many comedians) was clearly grounded in deep personal pain and suffering. So, I started reading her books and was pleased when this short video became available! It is short! Only an hour long, but it follows Anne through some interesting vignettes in a one year period of her life. There is one scene where she presides over the gay marriage/wedding of two men in an outdoor wedding ceremony that may not be for all or appreciated by some.Other than that I liked her letting us in to her life to show us that one can lift themselves from rock bottom of addiction and suffering. There is a scene of Anne with a piece of paper, a bottle of white out, and her writing on the page looks like that of a school child's!!!Yes, she writes like all of us did, excrutiatingly trying to get something, ANYTHING!, down on paper.Read more
