5-0 out of 5 stars It's an endurance test; a contest of wills.
To the uninitiated, HANDS ON A HARDBODY may vaguely sound like it's a porn film or perhaps a film about a "fluffer" or someone involved in oiling up muscles in a body building contest. To those more familiar with vehicles, a "hardbody" is the term for a Nissan pickup truck. The "hands" fit into S. R. Bindler's documentary courtesy of the 1994 "Hands on a Hardbody" competition. This annual contest at a Longview, Texas Nissan dealership has contestants place a hand on a well-equipped truck. The last person to take their hand off the truck wins it.
5-0 out of 5 stars "It's a human drama thing"
This quote from one of the featured contestants sums up this documentary.I'm not one who often watches a film more than once. However, I've seen this at least 4 times and have been fascinated each time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Infinitely better than reality TV!
Okay, I admit...I'm a sucker for documentaries. Give me a documentary anyday over what passes for 'reality' on television. I love the raw quality of docs and the emotion of the people in them. "Hands on a Hard Body" is a little gem of a movie. Sure it was cheaply made and many of the camera shots are rough, but the people in this little film are amazing! And hilarious. I certainly don't mean to poke fun at them because I think their honest-to-goodness need and desire to win a truck is so real and touching. I love how some of them trained for the contest (by eating "energy" food like oranges and 'snickie' bars) and the side stories that transpire throughout the film. It's funny, it's touching, it's a little bit sad, but I loved it. "Hands on a Hard Body" is reality! Check it out at your local video store. I think you'll be glad you did. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars History or Hollywood?STALIN delivers an excellent balance
I agree with Leaming.Any time Hollywood depicts history, there are going to be issues of inaccuracy, artistic license, etc.In the case of the film STALIN, this is mostly due to the need to compress about thirty years into less than three hours. The portrayals of the primary characters are sometimes simplistic and inaccurate, but Bukharin and Kirov's characters (for example) are portrayed so as to accentuate the perception of Stalin as a monster (which is accurate). In other words, the truth is adapted somewhat to generate a dramatic foil.Films are never a substitute for reading the real history, but I find that they often whet an appetite when one did not previously exist. The mini-series PETER THE GREAT with Maximilian Schell in the title role is another great example of a film that generated popular interest in Tsarist Russia.SHOGUN, ROUGH RIDERS, LAST SAMURAI, GLADIATOR, GODS AND GENERALS, SHARPE'S RIFLES -- all are examples of films that prompted people to actually read history. So, take the films for what they are -- all in all, everyone who loves history should encourage this terrific trend in film-making!

4-0 out of 5 stars nevermind the "purist" reviews - this is an excellent film
This film is historically excellent. What most reviewers seem hung up on are accents, make-up and costumes. Most comment that it is historically inaccurate but give nothing very specific. The film is a broad overview of the life of Stalin and could never include every element of his life. All the important stuff is there:the Revolution, the power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin, Stalin's rise to power, The great famines, The Great Purges, WWII, etc.The film gives great insight into Stalin and the paranoia that he experienced and how that paranoia influenced the way he ruled over the Soviet Union.Sure, many of the other characters were somewhat glossed over, but the film is essentially about Stalin and what made him tick - not about the intricate backgrounds of other revolutionaries and supporters. If you don't come away from the film thinking what a bastard Stalin was, then you simply missed the point. The way that he treated his family, friends and so called counterrevolutionaries is illustrated correctly in this film.3-0 out of 5 stars Good Characterization of Stalin, Bad History
In the past, apologists for Stalin (including many of his victims) said that Stalin was good, but he was surrounded by bad people. This film turns this on its head saying that Stalin was bad, but he was surrounded by good people. Both of these are wrong--the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution and the leaders of the USSR in the period following the revolution were all up to their necks in blood. Robert Duvall gives an excellent portrayal of Stalin, emphasizing that he, unlike his ranting partner in mass murder Hitler, was soft-spoken and basically uncharismatic.Duvall correctly does not use a "Russian" accented English because Stalin spoke Russian with a heavy Georgian accent.Having said this, the historical aspects of the film are very poor.First of all, Maximilian Schell's portrayal of Lenin is way off base. The Old Bolsheviks like Trotsky, Kamenev, Zinoviev, Bukharin, Ordzhonikidze and Kirov are shown to be basically well-meaning people who got trapped in Stalin's web. This is untrue, they were all involved in mass terror, justifying it in the name of a "higher good".In Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago", he points out what a pathetic man Bukharin really was and how he so freely shed tears for the injustice committed to his person, and yet he had no pity on the millions of others who suffered. At the end of the film, Khruschev says that Stalin's crimes ("the millions" he liquidated) had to be accounted for, whereas,in reality,he himself took an active role in the Great Terror.Read more

Editorial Review

This Sundance Festival sensation has attracted attention because of its jarring images of Amish kids immersed in debauchery: plain-dressed girls in white bonnets slugging back beers and flicking ashes from their cigarettes, boys passing out in the back of pickups after all-night parties, even Amish teens in bed together. But like a good drama, it's the characters themselves and their heartbreaking dilemma that linger in the mind. In the Amish vernacular, "Devil's Playground" refers to the "English" or outside world. The protected teens are suddenly thrust into this world upon their 16th birthday as they begin "Rumspringa," a period during which they decide whether to join the church as adults. Crystallizing this predicament is the 73-minute documentary's most compelling figure, 18-year-old Faron, a preacher's son fighting drug addiction. His earnest intent to return to the church and astonishing articulateness makes his misadventures in the drug underworld and penal system undeniably poignant. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An important documentary of a seldom seen way of life.
I visited simular churches in Lancaster Co Pa,and Elkhart ,Indiana.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative Yet Disturbing
Sex, drugs, heavy metal/rap music, Nintendo. These are not things one would normally associate with the Amish, but there you go, it's time to learn about DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND
5-0 out of 5 stars Actually very interesting no matter what your religious affiliation
This documentary answers the question that most of us not raised in constrictive religious homes ask about the very (usually rightwing) religious - do these people ever misbehave without severe trauma? Apparently the Amish let their kids misbehave for a great length of time in order to show them how empty the secular world is. As one of the characters puts it towards the end "most Amish see Rumspringa as their inoculation against the secular lifestyle."

4-0 out of 5 stars Right Documentary, Wrong Host
A wonderful overview of Byzantine history, art and architecture. If only the host John Romer could have somehow managed to have kept his constantly waving, flailng hands in his pockets, it would have distracted considerably less from his presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BYZANTINE DOCUMENTARY
I've been looking for this documentary for some time.Amazon has it only in VHS.TheLearningChannel(the US cable channel that originally showcased this film) has it on its web site in DVD format as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great Introduction to an ignored people
If one is seeking for an excellent overview of an overlooked part of European History, then you have lucked out. For some reason the West has decided to ignore the Bulwark of Constantinople that protected the West from the forces of the East for over a 1000 years. Maybe because they stabbed the Greeks in the back in 1204. Anyway, Mr. Romer as usual did a wonderful job setting out the history of a great people. I can safely say that its a great film to behold. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, rejected five times by the USC film school, won the best director award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival for this alarmingly personal investigation into the health hazards wreaked by our fast food nation. Under extensive medical supervision, Spurlock subjects himself to a steady diet of McDonald's cuisine for 30 days just to see what happens. In less than a week, his ordinarily fit body and equilibrium undergo dark and ugly changes: Spurlock grows fat, his cholesterol rockets north, his organs take a beating, and he becomes subject to headaches, mood swings, symptoms of addiction, and lessened sexual energy. The gimmick is too obvious to sustain a feature documentary; Spurlock actually spends most of the film probing insidious ways that fast food companies worm their way into school lunchrooms and the hearts of young children who spend hours in McDonald's playrooms. French fries never looked more nauseating. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Supersized sickness
Spurlock decided to undertake an interesting experiment with his own health; eat nothing but McDonald's fast food for 30 days. The result; his health gets ruined.
5-0 out of 5 stars Underated masterpiece
Super Size Me has received some good reviews, but the film has not yet been generally recognized as the masterpiece that it most certainly is.This is one of fewfilms witha clear concept executed with perfection.Didactic objectives and esthetic valueshave notbeendiluted a committee whose final product is a compromise of conflicting views and objectives.Anyone who has seen the film should have recognizedthat making money couldnot have beena primary objective of the producer, otherwisehe would not have been so unsparing in exposing the truth aboutfood producers, among the most poweful power blocs in the country.
1-0 out of 5 stars Americans are fat because they lack discipline
Why are Americans so fat? According to these guys, it's because of fast food. Which is an easy way to shift the blame from ourselves, our laziness, and our lack of discipline and blame those mean corporations for offering us all sorts of alternatives that we can accept or decline. Gee, I wish Mommy Government would outlaw unhealthy foods and unhealthy portions! Then everything would be right with the world; after all, no government has ever consolidated power over its people and then abused them. Right? People shouldn't have to make decisions for themselves! It's not fair to ask us to use our brains and decide what's best for ourselves. Someone else should take responsibility so we can just sit around watching television shows and playing on the Internet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Older VHSvs new DVD
Buyer beware! The newer DVD set of this FABULOUS series is not up to the quality of this VHS edition. The DVDs are made by the History channel, and the sound quality is awful. This older VHS version, produced by New Line features (although on tape) has a much finer sound quality and even the video isn't that bad, compared to the lousey transfer of the DVDs.2-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Old Fashioned
Once considered one of the greatest TV documentaries ever made, no one under the age of fifty is going to be able to sit through this overblown, hoaky collection of war footage. The narration is so overdramatic it's almost laughable, like the propaganda films made during the war to increase morale.Roger's score is great music, but it's just too prominant and often completely inappropriate (like the cheerfull flute music as Hitler marches into Paris).5-0 out of 5 stars "Victory at Sea" -- A Victory to See
Probably the most extraordinary documentary of World War II ever produced for television, the original 26 episodes of "Victory at Sea" have been collated into six VHS tapes. To own the original 26 volumes on individual tapes is a collector's treasure indeed.Virtually impossible to find in that format and, if you can find it, good luck on the price!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Saint For All Times
A trully great and inspirational movie that trancsends most every culture and time.It is best know that the actress who played the character of St. Clare, Francis' great friend and admirer, was Dolores Hart who herself became a real life nun!
5-0 out of 5 stars True to the peaceful spirit of Saint Francis.
I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it for viewing and keeping. Though it is a simple movie by today's standards, it is very engaging and inspiring. Bradford Dillman (Francis) delivers a great performance, very believable. I liked that the movie leaves room for the imagination and for interpretation, ie. it does not take us into the saint's head and show us his deepest thoughts etc. which I find inappropriate in some other movies about saints whose thoughts were not reported/documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Movie
All the lives of the Saints are great, which is what makes it difficult to rate movies of their lives. You would think that the movie would naturally deserve five stars, but that isn't always the case. In rating a movie on the life of a Saint, what is really being rated is the presentation of their life. This presentation of the life of St. Francis of Assisi is deserving of five stars because it shows the viewer how St. Francis embodied true conversion, faith, hope, and love. Despite this, however, I do have this criticism: the heart of St. Francis' spiritual life was the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass. Shockingly, however, the movie does not portray this at all! This criticism also applies to the recent movie on the life of St. Anthony of Padua, which I would likewise give five stars. These two saints wold sometimes live only off of the "food which endures to eternal life" (Jn 6:27)! Yet one wold not at all get this from the movies. This is a major disappointment. Nevertheless, though, the movie still deserves five stars, for without the gifts of repentance, faith, hope, and love, the Eucharist would be received in vain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Make sure this is the info you're looking for!
Video was very well done, however much of the focus was on the act of conception.I was expecting more on the development of the fetus, which felt crammed into the last portion of the video. However, it was a good way to get my non-reading husband a little more interested in the entire process (aside from making the baby, that is).

4-0 out of 5 stars Still an awesome educational journey
I saw this 15 years ago in my biology class and now that I'm 6 months pregnant, I was curious to see it again.Absolutely fascinating and rich in detail.I do wish they'd spent more time showing the fetus at the various ages--it stops at 18 weeks--but overall a highly educational and captivating journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful experience for toddlers!
My 15-month-old loves Zoboomafoo. I bought this tape since my PBS channel does not come in very well since I do not have cable. It is excellent. Even better then the TV show since it combines the best parts of 5 seperate shows into one full hour of animal fun. There are over a dozen animals playing on this tape. It is really fun to watch and my girl just loves it. Those Kraft brothers have a lot of energy and seem very happy. Their enthusiasm rubs off on whoever watches them. This is a sure hit for any children who love animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful - a CAN'T MISS or MUST SEE movie for educational & historical purposes/values
Being a 5 years old boy living in Saigon (a peaceful but lively city even in war time) in 1972, I hardly noticed that the country was at war. If not for the facts that my father was an ARVN officer, news war footages on TV everyday, and once in a while seeing tanks & soldiers roaming & patrolling the countrysides, I wouldn't have thought or reminded of how much destructions the VN war brought to Vietnamese/US civilians, soldiers and their families.
5-0 out of 5 stars It touched me deep within my soul.
In 11th grade, my history teacher showed this to us in class. It is one of the most unforgettable documentaries I've seen in my life.If you are not touched by this movie, you must have no heart and soul.A dark chapter in this country's history.Have we as a nation learned any lessons or will we continue to fight one unnecessary war after the next? This tearjerker of a film can be seen for free on google video.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Depiction of Vietnam
In the mid-nineties, when I was a high school student, my A.P. English teacher showed us clips from this movie as part of a weeks-long unit entitled war.Simply hearing the emotionally-laden words and viewing the clips of these young soldiers moved many of my classmates, not excluding myself, to tears.Almost a decade later, with the feelings and images still in my mind, I came online to order the dvd.The second viewing was as equally moving as the first. The ending is especially potent. An excellent addition to anyone's personal collection of media related to war/Vietnam/war literature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Right to Choose
I see that some people seem to blame the creator of this video for suicides. Not just here, but everywhere. And in general, the creators of all suicide references.I say that whether or not someone read the book or watched the tape, they probably still would have done it.I believe that this contains a wealth of information that can be put to use for practical purposes. The terminally ill, and, in my most humble of opinions, every person alive should have the right to choose to end their own life, if they seriously beleive it necessary. That's why things like this are so useful. If someone I loved were to commit suicide, I'd rather it be done right, with a minimum of pain, than have it done painfully and slowly, without knowledge of other tachniques.Material like this should be more widespread. Then again, I may be biased here, as you are reading a review from someone to which Kevorkian is a hero.If anyone is in chronic pain, with no way out, this is the way to go.I recommend this very highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Final Exit
I am very dissappointed that a book like this can so easily be purchased. This book was found, and the video, at my sisters appartment, where she read, step by step, how to commit suicide. We as the family, would like books like this to be avilable to people that are terminally ill... not a 24 year old, beautiful young woman, that had her whole life ahead of her!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those needing advice on self-deliverance
In this video Derek Humphry presents his material in a tasteful, low-key manner entirely suitable for such a serious subject. The viewer benefits from his long experience in the field, both his firsthand experience and his wide-ranging research. He clearly presents the steps that can be taken by terminally-ill people in desperate need of a hastened death, and for this many will thank him. The benefits of disseminating this information widely must on balance outweigh the risks of it falling into the hands of those for whom it is not intended. It takes great courage and compassion to do what Mr Humphry has done, and this video is a vital contribution adding to his other pivotal works. Until enlightened euthanasia legislation is passed, many of us will rely on this information plus other new developments in the self-deliverance field, when we ourselves are faced with the misery of a terminal condition. ... Editorial Review

Are animals closer to humans on an emotional level than generally has been believed? The many scientists, researchers, wildlife photographers, andother animal experts interviewed in this Discovery Channel video answer witha resounding yes. They make their case in this 93-minute documentary, narrated by actress Sigourney Weaver, with stories of despondent dogs, grieving chimps, and lab rats who laugh when tickled. The first half focuseson happy bonds between mother and child, siblings, and animals and humans. The second half delves into the darker subjects of sadness and grief, offering astounding assertions such as elephants secrete a tearlikesubstance when upset and search dogs finding only corpses in theOklahoma City bombing case needed treatment for depression. While the focus is on mammals, mollusks get some air time in the form of octopuses that appear to change color according to their situation. Backing up observations withbrain imaging and genetic testing, the scientists--and this film--make acompelling view for any animal lover. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Documentary
This documentary is incredible. As a young, athletic guy, it's a testament to this film's integrity that I actually cried.. numerous times.I've seen it twice; one time on a two-part television series and once after renting it from the library.I cried not once but both times. This movie is an emotional rollercoaster.I'll be smiling and laughing at one moment, crying at the next, and intrigued just minutes later. What a wonderful movie.. that's why I'm now buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful film, even if the message is obvious.
Despite the fact that I think it's ridiculous to structure a film around the question of whether non-human beings experience emotions (only a species as arrogant and detached from nature as ours could even conceive of such a question), this film was extremely worthwhile. There were some interesting points, for instance: human anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications probably work on dogs because their brains are reasonably similar to ours; and fear is probably "the" universal emotion because it leads to survival-enhancing behavior. The footage on octopi, dogs, sea lions, rhesus monkeys, dolphins, elephants, and wolves, among other species, was beautiful to watch and often incredibly moving. While I'm glad that there is now a body of scientific work on this subject, many of us don't need science to understand that many species experience emotions as we do.Konrad Lorenz, though he was a fine scientist, was probably not relying on research when he said: "The fidelity of a dog is a precious gift demanding no less binding moral responsibilities than the friendship of a human being. The bond with a true dog is as lasting as the ties of this earth can ever be."

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming & Wonderful
I first saw this documentary on the Discovery Channel.I bought it thinking it would be good to have, being as though I'm preparing for veterinary school. As a student of veterinary science, I am proud to say this is one of the greatest pieces in my collection. The subject of animal behavior has always fascinated me, and this documentary was a delicious helping for my always eager appetite. If you love animals, you will love this.Once you watch it, you will see how closely related humans and animals really are, and you'll understand some of their behaviors better. This documentary has proven helpful in research reports and papers, and is an excellent resource for any project.Go get it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream
This sad but powerful video is a must-have for any English or History teacher dealing with the Holocaust.I *do* agree with many Holocaust survivors who urge teachers to NOT begin their units with such a film, but to use it as a tool that complements a balanced discussion of this horrific time period.I begin my unit with a study of poems from the book, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," recommended by another teacher, and then proceed to this video. Finally, we read the book, "Night," by Elie Wiesel.I feel all the first-hand accounts really hit home the reality of the time, as well as the need to be wary of recurrences in such hatred today.

5-0 out of 5 stars IF THIS TOPIC INTERESTS YOU....
This was an excellent movie...If you are interested in this topic, you should check out the critically acclaimed books of Dorit B. Whiteman(she is a Holocaust survivor herself as well as a pysychologist): "The Uprooted", a classic which insightfully examines how some Jews (including many Kindertransport members) managed to miraculously escape Nazi occupied countries and describes the emotional aftermaths of their ordeals, and the more recent "Escape Via Siberia", which tells the dramatic story of a Polish boy who surived exile in Siberia and joined the only Russian Kindertransport.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Point of View
I am a 6th grade teacher and I teach the Holocaust to my students. This video is one resource tool that I use.It is quite powerful and the students get so much out of it.Through accounts of survivors, drawings, paintings, and vivid footage, we are taken through step by step the horrorof the Holocaust and how it happened, from pre-occupation all the way until they day the war was over. The stories are fascinating, the visual images horrifying. This video is intense, but not on the "sickly" level of "Night and Fog." However, if you are interested in this subject, I strongly suggest getting your hands on this movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD???
I strongly agree with the other reviewers. This truly contains so many classic performances - Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Doobie Brothers, the list goes on. Why is it not yet on DVD??? People have been asking this question for so many years now. With so many other great concert performances being released recently surely "No Nukes" is deserving of being released on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD???
This is an amazing show - please remaster this one and put it out on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Nukes (should be on DVD as well on VHS issued in Holland
The few that wrote a five star comment at this site should be aware of the 3-record album (with booklet). That only part of the songs on the VHS are the same on the records, and vice versa, makes no difference. A pity they didn't make a double cd also, and issue all in Europe (Holland!!!) I keep looking for them. ... Read
