Editorial Review

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest concert film ever
The Summer of 1969 seems a thousand years ago.I was eighteen years old, had just graduated from high school, was on vacation in Hawaii with my family, and terrified of the draft because the Vietnam War was at its height.
5-0 out of 5 stars woodstock - 3 days of peace & music (the director's cut)
Excellent - arrived on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
When reviews of music DVD's are all over the board regarding sound quality only one fair conclusion is possible: The problem is the end user, not the product. I was stunned by how good this DVD sounded. Consider the conditions under which Woodstock was recorded and the quality and calibration of your home system before jumping to negative conclusions about this "transfer". That the VHS version sounds better than the Dolby 5.1 mix on DVD is simply not possible. You can quibble about several aspects of this movie but sound quality should not be one of them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Crocodile Dundee he ain't....
I'm editing my review in light of Steve Irwin's tragic death, but not my opinion of him in general. I recall seeing a documentary on his life, and feeling respectful of his genuine enthusiasm and passion for Australian wildlife, but that doesn't change the fact that many of his antics with dangerous animals were highly irresponsible.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Crocodiles and Alligators..
If you can't get enough viewing pleasure of seeing these awesome reptiles on film, then this tape is for you. Steve and Terri Irwin recount the many adventures they've had while filming efforts to save the Austrailan Crocodiles both in the zoo and in the wild. They are really trying to safeguard these animales for future generations to enjoy, and this film (produced and directed by John Stainton) shows it all. Buy IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy!
I have seen only one video more crazy than this one. It was Steve Irwin' rattlesnake tour of the States. This guy is totally crazy! Would you try to catch a croc at night in a brown muddy waters with bare hands? Would you dive to free a croc trapped in a net? Would you provoke a 300 pound croc to attack you and then have fun with it? I doubt it. But Steve does all these things. OK, part of this is just a show, but still... See for yourself... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S IN LETTERBOX, and it's good
It's old, and so many of the people have died, but it's a great documentary.
5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY AND SAD DOCUMENTARY
This is a sub-culture with a minority that I was previously unaware of.The movie is a time capsule of a certain time in a certain place with a particular and peculiar group of gay men and their hangers-on who primped and pranced for their own ideas of glamour and class and who are sometimes outrageous and unreal in their comments on society and the straight AND gay world of NYC.
2-0 out of 5 stars rm
With all the five stars having been given this movie, I expected much more. The packaging of the DVD gives a false impression (looks nice on the outside but inside mostly repackaged old stuff.) While the historical context of gay life is worthy of perhaps four stars, the feature itself rates less. It is short at seventy-six minutes. The picture quality for this overpriced DVD is poor. The outtakes are very poor. They appear to be copied from an old worn out VHS tape with no remastering. Don't expect much from this DVD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction, but only as a starting point
This is a superb film, combining the emotion evoked from images and selected narratives (wonderfully read by great actors) as well as some analysis by prominent scholars or writers. So far as it goes, Burns has exploited the attributes of the film medium to what I believe is the maximum extent: you leave this experience with a good idea of what went on and how it changed the country. It is moving, horrible, and beautiful all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shelby Foote and Ken Burns Resurrect the Dead
I have seen the critical remarks regarding this film.True, not all material could be included...unless filmakers wanted to exceed the 11 hours that this documentary already comprises. This is a stirring masterwork which features master historians with the powers of captivating story -- Shelby Foote, Ed Bearss, and others.Giving renewed life and voice to those who have passed on, the drama of this timescape is carefully unfolded. It is filled with struggle, humanity, and grace. If I could afford the collector's box set, I'd own it...but it's a tad expensive. If you can afford it, buy it -- it will be a set that you often revisit. If you can *really* afford it, buy me a copy.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain; Seven Lessons to Enhance Creativity and Artistic Self-Confidence
The lessons in the video helps the drawing student break down the drawing of 3D visual objects to help them view it in a simplified shape to be transformed into a 2D drawing which appears to be 3D.This is a very hard concept for many drawing students to see and create, thus people stop trying to draw becasue they do not get the final product they wish to see. This video shows a variety of techniques to use to train the eye and the hand to create a more true to life drawing than the typical childlike drawng many people have as a final product of their efforts. If you are not happy with the final outcome you eventually stop trying. With the techniques in this video you learn ways to see and ways to draw what you see.Lessons are easy to follow and will give you the product you are trying to create.

5-0 out of 5 stars great video!
This is an outstanding and informative video of Betty Edwards teaching her methods and principals of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain."It is well-produced, easy to follow, and a must-have for anyone learning to draw or desiring to increase their drawing skills!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction.
I read the book - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - but it was this video that made it all gel.I had an "Ah-ha" moment with this video. All my life I loved art, but could never seem to quite figure out how to draw or transfer images I had to paper - and even with the few drawing lessons I did have - I found that the instructors expected me to already know how to draw - which seemed odd since I did not know how to draw and simply wanted to learn. This is a great video that cuts straight to the heart of the matter.I would recommend this to anyone who has sat and stared at a piece of paper, pencil in hand and sighed becuase they just could not get the image on the paper.I orginally got the video in the portfolio set that Betty Edwards uses at her workshops (which can be bought, without attending the workshop, from Betty Edwards' website)- and while you will need to get a few items to use with this - it will be worth it or purchase them prepackaged from the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain website. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "If (it) didn't happen exactly this way, it should have."
Another "made-for-Showtime" original movie that wildly exceeded expectatations (see also my review of the Patrick Stewart vehicle "Safe House"), "Elvis Meets Nixon" details the two days in December of 1970 when Elvis Presley, for reasons known but to himself, left his home in home in Memphis, Tennessee on his own for the first time in his adult life, criss-crossing the country to Washington, DC, then to Los Angeles, CA, and finally back to DC for a meeting with...President Richard Nixon.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Elvis lovers and nonlovers alike.
I just recently saw this movie with a group of friends, some die-hard fans like myself, and others who know very little about Elvis. This movie was great! Everyone enjoyed and laughed out loud at the absurdity of the reality these two men lived in. Both were so out of touch with everyday life... they were destined to find each other in this truly ironic way.
5-0 out of 5 stars "You can't make this up..."
Of course, most of it is an "artists impression", but based on what everyone knows about these two men with many eccentricities and very strong personalities. Bob Gunton does a great Dick Nixon and Rick Peters does a really good Elvis, minus the singing voice. The factuality which the story is based on is the letter Elvis sent to Nixon which is fantastic itself and the photo of Elvis in the purple cape suit with the President in the Oval Office - proof that the meeting did occur.

Fascinating and fun.I found the partner book in a used book store, and it, too, is excellent.Even though the program is not au courant, it's a terrific educator for everyone, little and big. But,jeez, where's the DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great show
I was recently reminded of seeing this series when it was on PBS... and I've got to say it was impressive. I was hoping it had been released on DVD, but since it hasn't I'll probably buy the VHS tapes. I'm not a teacher or professional linguist, but I found this miniseries to be really good. Its not only fascinatingly educational, but also entertaining. Just because most of the other reviews mention using it in class doesn't mean its not something worth watching at home for your own edutainment!

5-0 out of 5 stars SO GREAT!
A month or two ago, my AP English teacher played us one of the videos to this series.Considering the content and the fact that this is a somewhat old documentary, I had very low expectations...oh my god was I wrong.I have NEVER been so entertained by a documentary! There were all of these sayings and terms that I had completely forgotten about (or perhaps never heard) and it was so hilarious seeing the old fashions and technology. It was like opening a time capsule. The watcher can get a completely untainted opinion regarding all aspects of the culture of the late 80's / early 90's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Although this film centers on Deafness in France, the closely related language, culture and people appeals to American audiences."In the Land of the Deaf" is as moving and telling as any documentary on the Deaf World I have seen.Covering issues including: Deafness and the Arts, Oral Education, Total Communication, Cultural Divides, Abuse and Misunderstanding, Young Adult Life, and the Joys of Deaf Community and Successful Inter-cultural Relations...this film is a MUST SEE for members of every academic dicipline who claim some connection with humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than documentary, a must for any film buff
Deafness merely happens to be the subject of this extraordinary documentary. Sensitive and unobstrusive, good camera work, wonderful rhythm, great story telling, sense of humor, no axe to grind and thus allthe more moving. All the same adjectives apply to Philibert's "LaMoindre des choses" about patients at a clinic outside Parisrehearsing for a play.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting look into the Deaf culture.
I am a student of American Sign Language, and saw this movie in my class. I was surprised at my reaction to forcing the children to learn to speak. According to my instructor, who herself is deaf, this is very true to life.I recommend this movie to parents of children who are deaf or hard ofhearing before making any decision about forcing a child to speak just sothat they can be "normal". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a Beatles documentary!!
I LOVE this documentary! It was one of the first that I ever watched about The Beatles and it remains a treasure of my small VHS/DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best documentary at its time.
My mom introduced me to the Beatles at a ripe age of four, she was a big time Beatles fan, but I'm a bigger one, too bad I wasn't around in the 60's, I missed out on some good happenings. Anyways, we rented this video back in 1984 when it first came out, and I was hooked. Even before that, I loved the Beatles, and use to plug in the headphones and listen to their old records my mom had and this just added to my taste. You see my mom didn't have all their albums, but I ended up getting them all on vinyl before they discontinued them back in the mid 80's (the capitol albums). Anyways, what I'm getting at here, if you like the Beatles, and you don't know much about them, this will discribe it pretty good, considering it's narrarated, and it's before Anthology, and it's 1984, so they did a good recap on their lives without them really telling it themselves. It's got interesting things on their childhood, into getting interested in rock and roll, since it was born when they were teenagers, to the skiffle band John Lennon formed in 1956 called the Quarrymen, to their time in Hamburg with Stu and Pete, to kicking out Pete and getting Ringo. It's all here, from rags to riches, to fame and fortune, to calm to madness. People will remember the Beatles even hundreds years from now, and I'm not the only one who believes that. But anyways, young and old, prescious and delicate, if you like the Beatles, this should be in your collection, along with its big brother which came out about a decade later Anthology.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe This Isn't on DVD
Back in the middle 1980s, if you were a Beatles fan this was one of your few choices in full-length home video. The misleadingly titled 'Compleat Beatles' was one of the first direct-to-video rockumentaries to later be broadcast on PBS and cable TV, and it was accompanied by a two-volume set of books containing sheet music. (The books were available separately.)

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this video on technique
I am an artist/painter of 20 years and I got a lot out of this video. Sometimes a little technique can give you your own break through!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of technique possibilities
This is a great video. You'll notice on the cover there are 16 squares. This is the project that is demonstrated in the video. In each of the squares, a different technique is demonstrated as a sort of mini-project. What you end up getting is a sampler of various ways to handle acrylic paint, with techniques that can be combined. Find your favorite way(s) of working! These basic techniques offer quite a range of possibilities.

I don't know what that person from Miami(below) is talking about? NO credible sources that can validate the high death toll in Panama?? MY FAMILY IS FROM PANAMA and they were there, they lived it along with all of the other PANAMANIANS and you know what else?... There are dozens upon dozens of people in the neighborhood of Chorillo with missing limbs. They are not faking it!! But it seems some people just can't fathom that just because the US has not OFFICIALLY reported it, it doesn't mean it didn't happen! OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE! This is not "Anti-American propaganda" It is the truth plain and simple, and if seeking the truth makes us ANTI AMERICAN then we are a truely sad lot indeed!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars PRINCESS DIANA?!! RIDICULOUS! STRONG FINISH THOUGH...
Some of the choices on Biographiy's list do not belong. Princess Diana doesn't belong at all. She is rated #73--higher than Stalin, Peter the Great and the Beatles! I almost turned the video off, expecting Muhammad Ali or Marilyn Monroe to pop up ahead of Magellan or FDR. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the top 40 choices. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
I love Biography and the work they do.This is a great snapshot of the top 100 people in the last thousand year. While I disagree with some of the placings, Biography does back up their choices with solid reasoning. It is fun to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must See for All
In true Biography form, this series is an excellent review of some of the greatest individuals from the years 1000-2000. While I did not agree with all the choices, or the order of importance that they were ranked, I still highly recommend this for viewing by young and old alike. All walks of life are equally represented by the choices of the panel--writers, politicans, scientists, philosophers, activists, inventers, etc. Interwoven between the bios of the 100 are comments from current field leaders that lend an interesting flavor to the choices. The choice of the panel for the number one most influential person of the millennium was someone that I never would have guessed, but in retrospect it was a very logical choice. You'll have to watch it to see what I mean! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some technical data about this film
There is a very good reason for this film not living up to That the Way It Is.I am sure if you have seen this movie you have noticed that it is much more grainey and not as bright as TTWIS or other movies for that matter. This contributes a lot to the picture not being as well received. The fact of the matter is that MGM in it's infinite wisdom chose to shoot the movie in 16 mm not 35 mm as most all movies. This is a little known fact. But all you have to do is watch for many of the stage segments and you can see the photographers crawling around the various stages with a relatively small camera in hand. They may have done this for maneuverability sake but with significant loss in quality.16 mm is a long way from 35 mm in all measuring points. This may also be why they have not put it out on DVD as yet.The movie is very grainy and this adds a subconscious negativity to the movie.I was present at many of the concerts that were filmed for this movie. The live shows were not grainy at all and they were very sharp and well lit and came across much better than the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars This video rocks, entertains . . . and saddens
To start, I won't labor through listing all of the music on the concert video.Reviewer Alejandra Vernon did that nicely in her excellent Spotlight Review.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Documentary: A Bit of History, A Bit of Storytelling
When I was growing up in Oregon, the Lewis & Clark Expedition was raised up as one of the most important events in American History and we got to learn about it every year.Of course, the entire focus of the journey was on reaching the Oregon Country and the winter they spent at Fort Clatsop.I was always captivated by the journey and loved visiting some of the sites along the trail.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Filmed
If you are a Ken Burns Junkee, I don't have any idea why you would read a review, just buy it.However, if you find Ken Burns boring, sentimental, revisionist, and overbearing like me, you may be inclined to pass this one by.Unlike the soap box barrage that is Baseball, and the myopic epic that is the Civil War, this documentary is worth every penny for the score (which is superb) and the filming...yes, I can hear it now, another sunset studded Burns bloated documentary, but in this documentary the filmography is breath-taking.The story is well told albiet somewhat biased, but still worth it just to watch and take in.Read books for history, watch Burns for the light show...and this is a good one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners Only
This would have been great if I was doing a report in school and had no previous knowledge of the expedition. After reading Steven Ambrose's, "Undaunted Courage", the movie did not provide any new knowledge. The book is obviously way more detailed. It's the details that make the journey...not the highpoints. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge Is A Key
I have had 2 copies of this video. It is that good! I first bought this video only because it contained The Ronettes of whom I am a great fan. But this video contains so much more. Not only great and rare performances, but also insightful interviews and documentary. That is what sets this video apart from others. It is extremely well edited and perfectly balanced. Just the right amount of documentary that is paired with the performances. Often I've seen other videos with too much of one or the other. But this video strives for an even balance of the two.
4-0 out of 5 stars Please someone (MGM? SONY?) re-issue this gem on DVD!
This is the ultimate 60s girl group documentary. Excellent commentary by Ellie Greenwich, Ronnie Spector, Darlene Love.

Editorial Review

This first movie from the Discovery Channel favorite opens with a plot of international intrigue over a downed satellite, but within four minutes Steve Irwin is belly flopping after a baby croc on the outback floor. Steve and his nerves-of-steel sidekick wife, Terri, are asked to relocate a cattle-chomping crocodile before it's shot by a local rancher. This same reptile happened to swallow the intelligence-gathering device that fell to earth, and so begins the goofball premise of this lark of a movie. The feds believe the Irwins are appropriating their classified info, and the Irwins think they're running from poachers. Quibblers may object to Irwin's frequent interruptions to introduce a bird-eating spider or paw through croc dung, but Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Epitaph To The Life of the Crocodile Hunter
I only saw Steve Irwin's show a few times.I saw him a few times on the talk show circuit and found him an engaging personality.Unfortunately, I was drawn to this film by Steve's untimely passing.I was hesitant to view it for two reasons.I didn't want to dislike this film.I also didn't want to praise this film effusely because of Steve's death.Fortunately, this is a terrific family film. The best part of the film is that Steve is an engagingly energetic cheerleader for wildlife. Not only is Steve witty but he is incredibly knowledgable about the wild kingdom.I'm not a viewer of the Discovery Channel but I was on the edge of my seat as Steve relates the lifestyles of varied creatures.Steve's wife, Terri, makes for a fetching sidekick. The only drawback to the film are lesser stories about the CIA trying to intercept a missing black box in the Outback and a portly female rancher trying to bag a crocodile whose been devouring her livestock. These story threads, however, are ultimately woven into the story for a satisfying conclusion. If you have reservations about viewing this film because it may make you sad never fear.Ultimately, "Crocodile Hunter-Collision Course" is a celebration of a rich and full life and that will bring on a smile.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to remember the legendary Steve Irwin
If you were a fan of the late, great Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, then Collision Course is a must-have for your collection. The movie isn't bad...not the best movie ever, but it's certainly entertaining enough, and if you enjoyed watching Irwin's shows, you'll have fun with this movie. Perhaps the best part is all the special features on the disc. There are several documentaries and deleted scenes that are just terrific and yet another way to immortalize Steve Irwin forever. Kids will no doubt appreciate this film too, and I don't think a single profanity is ever uttered in it. The price Amazon lists it for is decent, but I found mine shockingly enough right after Steve Irwin died in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart. Definitely a steal at that price! With Collision Course, you have a wonderful memento of the Steve Irwin we all loved so much. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD version?
Apparently, a lucrative enough deal has not been made to bring Two Fat Ladies to DVD. If there is demand for any product, you can rest assured that it will be available sometime....... So when is it going to be time for the DVD? We TFL fans are probably not 12-24 year old boys, so it might be a while.... ... Read more
