5-0 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever Made!!!!!!!!!!
I am completly OPSESSED with this movie!! So far, I've seen Titanic 8 times, and I have never got tired of it!! This movie deserves 5 or more stars because it has perfect actors, perfect theme song, and the best effort on a movie in years. This movie is way better than those crapy movies that my little brother's opsessed with, like Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and all that garbage. I have a huge crush on Leonardo Di Caprio, and I always kiss him on my poster. I also have him on my desktop on my computer. Whoever hates this movie is a complete Retarded jerk, and needs to get a life. I am so excited because in my chorus class, were singing My Heart Will Go On, and I am so excited!! All I'm saying is, great job James Cameron, and cast, Your movie was a big hit!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Ship, Huge Impact
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Billy Zane star in this whopper of a movie. You get to see the personalities of each of them, Leo as the adventure seeking good guy, Billy as the pompous arrogant bad guy, and Kate as the uncertain but later passionate and fun loving lady. This film has realistic action sequences, an impactful storyline, and is heavy on the romance. The movie is rather long, but it is very involving and time will fly by.This is the top grossing film of all time, and has won 11 Oscars including Best Picture.A wonderful film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drown, damn you, drown!!
How could Mr. Cameron take a subject like this and a cast and brig out the worst in everybody?

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is well worth watching.
The vicious cycle of events had started in Motaba River Valley in Zaire. In July 1967, a deadly virus, which caused deaths of tens of people in the Mercenary Camp, was discovered by the army. The doctor of the camp wanted supplies to treat the patients. However, the army officials preferred bombing the camp in an attempt to erase the evidence of the virus's existence along with the potential carriers of the virus. Although, they developed the antiserum, "the E-1101," from a blood sample taken before the bombing, they kept it as a secret to be able to use the virus as a biological weapon.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great film
when this movie openned, back in 95; i remember there had been an ebola outbreak in africa, so there was this sense of paranoia about the possibility of it spreading to the U.S., so when i watched this film i was like 12 and it scared me to death, it made me wonder how, then; president Clinton, would've handled it. needless to say i feel much more concerned, today as to how our current president would handle a similar situation. but politics aside, this is a 4-star film with lots of action, suspense, and good acting.

Editorial Review

The great John Ford directed this rousing 1937 adventure with such invigorating physicality that the movie is never compromised by its cornball plot. It's an island adventure from the old school of tall tales, and the title says it all--the tropical romance between native girl Dorothy Lamour and suntanned hunk Jon Hall is established simply so it can be tested by a meddlesome island governor (Raymond Massey) and a tropical storm that provides one of the most physically impressive climaxes ever filmed. The storm remains as awesome as ever simply because it triumphantly captures the power of nature in the throes of a raging tempest. Massive waves, driving wind, and expert use of miniatures make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Exploration into Disaster Films
I have always been a fan of John Ford's movies. He has a unique style of movies that are wholesome without being irrelevant. He always seems to have a major social community event such as a wedding or a funeral that helps identify the unity of the society. He often has an individual that is or becomes an outsider to that same society and, through that antagonist, we gradually discover both the positive and negative traits of each. There is always a romantic aspect and a religious aspect to the movie as well.By the time the movie has ended, we have usually discovered how the individual has succeeded or failed as well as how the society has been affected by the events in the movie.Life goes on although often a bit sadder but wiser. We, in turn, are often a bit sadder but wiser as well.Happy endings occur in Ford's movies but usually at a price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your jaw will drop
Wow.Incredible special effects close out the last half hour of this film, in which a small Pacific island near Tahiti is obliterated by a collossal hurricane. The action scenes are amazing, as buildings, boats, people and trees are swept away by unstoppable nature. The plot revolves around the noble seafaring Terangi, a native who runs afoul of an unbending legal system, and has to go to great lengths to return to his family, and to prove his valor and nobility.Played by athlete-turned-actor John Hall, Terangi has a major "me Tarzan" quality to him, but is compelling nonetheless.Dorothy Lamour, in her trademark sarong, also plays a Polynesian. If you can get past the silliness of these white folks playing "ethnic" roles, this is a superior, and quite stunning film.As ever, a tightly crafted movie by director John Ford. ... The ultimate edition of this movie, lots of extras and the image and sound are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EXTRAS
** This is only for the Special Edition DVD**
4-0 out of 5 stars A disaster flick that's a far cry from a disaster!
I hadn't seen this film before watching the remake, and I gave the remake a generous 4 stars ( I say generous because it was undeserved) and after seeing this film and seeing what the remake had to work with I'm appalled the remake wasn't better. At least the ending to this film make sense. The acting here is decent, for a 70's film, and Hackman (who is always top notch) and Winters both did wonderfully. The action and adventure is this film is high intensity, and while the remake did copy a few of this films best scene's the brilliance was lost in the translation.Point being that the original, in this instance, is much better than the remake and should be enjoyed by all who haven't had the opportunity to see it yet.The story is similar in both, both involving a cruise liner flipping over due to a rogue wave, each set in their own time periods, but what makes the films differ is the people aboard. In this film you have a priest (Hackman) struggling to make his way right with god, and he is the one who ushers everyone to safety. He wants to help everyone. In the remake you have a professional gambler only concerned with his own safety. Not that that is the main reason this film is better, for this film also gets you involved with the cast of characters, understanding all of them, knowing all of them and so you thus can be concerned about all of them.I guess all that really needs to be said is that if you're like me and you've only seen the remake, please rent this movie and see the masterpiece that inspired the flop. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars True to the story
The movie portrays this true story in an entertaining way while still holding true to the actual events that occurred!

5-0 out of 5 stars "ALIVE" is the bible for understanding how to survive a catastrophe.
When I first watched the movie "Alive" in the early 1990's, I was horrified at how graphic and real the movie was shot. The director and producers, as well as the survivors went to great lengths to ensure that every detail was captured verbatim of the 1970's catastrophe. It's as if there was a documentarian on the plane with the rugby team at the time of the incident. Anyone who watches this movie will truly appreciate what it means to survive a disaster, and some may even be inspired to develop ways in which to prevent future tragedies of this magnitude ever happening again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Inspirational Movie that Touched Me Greatly
Unsurmountable odds, defying forces of nature, dying hope of the human spirit. This movie showcases the incredible power of the human mind that surpasses any odds it thinks it can. This one of those movies that I can watch over and over again. The story is great, acting is good, and seeing the jerks get it in the end is the best. The force of nature is just amazing to me and given the opportunity I would love to go on a Tornado hunt. The special effects in the movie are very well done and realistic and the ending is perfect for this movie.I would of given this one 5 stars but it has to be one heck of a movie for 5 stars. The loss of a star is for some of the actors average job at there parts.Rent it, buy it, watch it!It is well worth your time and money.

How long will truck tires last on top of molten lava? A surprising amount of time, apparently, according to this wild and wildly improbable disaster movie. Pierce Brosnan stars as a government geologist who shows up in a small Washington town to check out an active volcano, and in doing so gets in the way of the local-development agenda of the mayor (Linda Hamilton). Mother Nature soon levels the playing field, however, quite literally, as the pair and sundry kids and others try to keep ahead of the volcano's many spin-off problems. Roger Donaldson (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, well-made disaster movie
Dante's Peak is as about as good as disaster movies get.First, Brosnan is very good as the hunk expert with a hunch; he's certain that that volcano's gonna blow, but is not egotistic about it.He pairs up with Hamilton very well, and is extraordinarily good in the scenes with her children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ray Harryhausen lends his talents to the Jules Verne story
There was a woefully bad 15-part serial version of Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" released in 1951 that stupidly gave away the big surprise by listing Captain Nemo's name in the credits.Fortunately a decade later the release of this version of "Mysterious Island" replaced that one in the public's consciousness. The team that put together "Mysterious Island" consisted of producer Charles Schneer, special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen, and composer Bernard Herrmann, which is important because it puts the film more in the tradition of their earlier collaborations, "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "Jason and the Argonauts," than it does Verne's novels.Obviously the 1954 Disney film version of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" had an influence on this 1961 film by director Cy Endfield ("Zulu") as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good retro fun
Somehow, everything about this movie screams "Saturday afternoon". It has an improbable plot, effects from a simpler era, and the good winning out over the morally ambiguous.4-0 out of 5 stars great family entertainment
My kids love this movie and my wife and I like it, too. It's not a great movie, both because it has a rather creaky Jules Verne plot, and like most Harryhausen movies it sometimes becomes too enchanted by the "movie magic" to pay enough attention to the actors, but these are not things that your kids will mind, and you probably won't be bothered by them, either. What the movie does have is the same thing that is one of the strengths of Verne's books, which is its "larger than life" feel. I was always transported by his books into a world of high adventure, and this movie does that for my kids (and it takes me back there, too). Read more

i saw this film a long time ago on british television. for years i could not think of the name, but what i could remember was charlton heston starred, along with many other fine actors, and that i had to have the movie. for the last ten or so years i have searched movie books, video shops etc, to see if i could recognise the title, to no avail. then i went onto an actors website, punched in charlton hestons name, and hay presto, there it was. the plot was so unforgetable and i am so pleased i found it, although i have not managed to retrieve a copy of the movie yet. this movie shows that human beings can pull together in times of disaster, and how well firefighters, and medics can do their jobs. how lucky we are

4-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle In Sioux City
The 1992 TV film A THOUSAND HEROES (which first aired as CRASH LANDING: THE RESCUE OF FLIGHT 232) recounts the events of July 19, 1989, when United Airlines Flight 232, enroute from Denver to Chicago, suffered a catastrophic engine explosion in mid-flight, which totally disabled its ability to stay airborne.Captain Al Haynes was forced to bring United 232 in for a very hard landing at Sioux City Airport in Iowa. The plane blew up and came apart on impact. But in one of the most miraculous outcomes ever, of the 289 passengers and crew onboard, more than 180 managed to survive the horrific ordeal.Read more

Editorial Review

It may not be a disaster movie, per se, but this terminally silly thriller is certainly disastrous, and would be pointless without the novelty of its setting in a flooding Midwestern town during a torrential rainfall. Physically impressive but idiotic in every other respect, the movie pits an armored truck courier (Christian Slater) against a smart leader of thieves (Morgan Freeman) and a corruptible town sheriff (Randy Quaid) who are vying for possession of $3 million in cash. A waterlogged game of cat and mouse, the plot is so contrived that even the most impressive action sequences--such as a jet-ski chase through flooded high-school corridors--are robbed of their already tenuous credibility. Before long you'll be yawning as incompetent accomplices are systematically dispatched by their own stupidity, in the kind of movie where the use of power boats inevitably leads to at least one death by outboard motor. What's impressive here is the physical production itself--the effect of flooding was created by building a huge replica of downtown Huntington, Indiana, in a huge, watertight aircraft hangar in Palmdale, California! 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughful action movie with a likeable cast!Great Rental!
A great, action movie for a Friday night with a likeable cast!Christian Slater is actually a very good choice for this movies' lead.Mainly because he's kind of like an everyman, regular guy like Bruce Willis' character in "Die Hard" (ironic that Hard is in both titles), who's forced into incredible situations. He does the best he can using his wits and cunning along with above average physical strength, without having or using the advantages of huge, bulging biceps and pecs like Arnold or Sly's characters seem to have in equally similar movies.Minnie Driver is at her most beautiful in this one!!If you fell in love with her intelligence, combined with the refined beauty she displayed in "Good Will Hunting", then this is the movie for you!!You should rent it just to see her at her peak of perfection! Her relationship to Christian Slater is very believable and they play off of one another very well.Randy Quaid is a believable sheriff and Morgan Freeman is a decent bad guy but, it's the constant threat of rain and the Dam breaking that gives the movie its constant tension. The action is extremely good and it's just an all-around good flick to watch on a Friday or Saturday night!Highly recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Rain!
What a dandy of an action film! Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, Minnie Driver and especially Randy Quaid were all very good! Edward Asner, Ray Baker, and Betty White were good! Cool action! Beautiful rain and lighting! Great music by Christopher Young! Hard Rain is a must see.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lame, predictable movie
I saw this at Blockbuster for rent and saw Morgan Freeman's name on it so I decided to rent it. I thought it was going to be a solid thriller but boy was I wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wacko
Somehow this goofy movie seemed to invite a different kind of approach. So what follows is my highly subjective review of Madam Satan.3-0 out of 5 stars BIZARRE EARLY TALKIE.
This bizarre hodgepodge directed by Cecil B. DeMille has to been seen to be believed! A woman diguises herself as an exotic seductress in order to win her roving husband back, and the story takes place during an extravagant costume ball - aboard a dirigible....There are lots of songs and dances (even a ballet) in the dirigible scenes and Lillian Roth is memorable as the energetic, buxom and dimpled showgirl Trixie. Years later, she would stop boozing, repent and write I'LL CRY TOMORROW...Kay Johnson plays the elusively exotic title role, and Reginald Denny - her hubby - literally jumps to safety - in a parachute - into a Central Park Reservoir - after the blimp explodes!!... The famous climax -i.e. when the airship blows up - comes so late in the picture that you're too exhausted to enjoy the unique lunacy of it all. With Roland Young and the immortal (kidding) Martha Sleeper. Written for the screen by Jeanie MacPherson, this is a good example of DeMille's experimental insanity in the early talkie era. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TERRIFYING IN 1964, TERRIFYING TODAY
I've seen this film several times, and it NEVER ceases to scare me... it concentrates on the true power technology holds in the world, and the devastating results that can occur when technological problems arise. An error in our defense system sends an erroneous message to fighter pilots patrolling our airspace, who obey it and head off to bomb Moscow! The situation is handled, if not resolved, with a truly horrifying result.

A very interesting anti-war picture of the era, ONCE BEFORE I DIE stars Ursula Andress as the lone female amongst a group of soldiers.John Derek offers a fine performance as the main contender for her affections.Great location filming and top supporting performances from Ron Ely, Richard Jaeckel and Rod Lauren.Based on a story by Anthony March entitled "Quit For the Next".Probably Miss Andress' most accomplished acting role.

Although I'm sure he'll claim he's never seen it, this was actually Francis Ford Coppola's inspiration for Apocalypse Now.To John Derek's credit this was a story about the P.I filmed in P.I.Having seen Apocalypse Now first even though Once Before I Die preceeds by decades chronologically puts movie viewers at a distinct disadvantage in being able to identify this as an "homage".When you watch both consecutively you'll see incredible similarities. The panoramic views and camera angles could have been shot on the same island, right down to the psychedelic ending in Once before I Die's rogue G.I looking very reminiscent of Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.Up until now Coppala has been able to fool some of the people, however I feel time will bring out that Apocalypse Now owes infinitely more to Once Before I Die than to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness if it owes anything to the former at all.Yes Francis, a few of us have read it.You don't have to be a huge fan of Naval history to see what a disservice Coppola has done for the portrayal of Nam Vets.John Derek flirts with the boundaries as well but manages to keep well within bounds. In time film critics will make this connection as well and ultimately agree that given it's budget and chronology Once Before I Die is the better film.By the way when you're at the video store make sure you get the copy of Apocalypse Now (Redux) it even has the awkward love scene just like Once Before I Die complete with corny retro romance sound track that was cut from the original release.I guess Francis thought, "After all these years, who would remember"?

4-0 out of 5 stars Ursula Andress:Need I say More?
Once Before I Die is a film I saw on TV around 1980.The 1965 film directed by and co-starring John Derek is a great vehicle for Ursula Andress who portrays a beautiful sweet naiveRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars An astounding, realistic piece of cinema!
This is undoubtedly one of the best natural disaster movies ever produced--much, much better than the 1974 film "Earthquake".

Editorial Review

Robert Aldrich's tense, 1965 drama about a plane crash in the Sahara is a unique psychological study of men in desperate circumstances. In this somewhat revisionist view of classic heroism, every character within the mixed lot is stretched to his limit, and individual efforts to brave the elements and hostile nomads are duly punished. What is left is collective will and ingenuity. One could call this an allegory for transcending Cold War madness, perhaps, but Aldrich (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No women in this movie!
Okay before you tear me out a new one, my mildly misogynistic cousin says that the death knell of a good adventure film is the introduction of a woman into the plot. If you bothered to see the recent remake of this fantastic film, you would have to think that his hypothesis might be correct.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wilbert & Orville Would be highly Entertained!
I would like to glean upon three scenes to make a long story short (Pardon the Pun ): (1)The Scene where Frank and the navigator got into the philosophical debate and Frank repented. (2)The scene where the engineer was misunderstood about the difference between a "model" and a "toy" airplane. Then he recited some unknown history of the genesis of flight.(My 4 year old grandson watched me as I began laughing at the infamous laughing Finch as he went 'berserk' when he misunderstood that paradoxical difference. My grandson laughed along with us even though he did not understand it...lol. and last but not least: (3)Faith, and hard work and persistence got them delivered back to civilization. GREAT STUFF! The new version can never measure up to the original one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Allegory and A Perfect Film
Here is the secret to really appreciating Robert Aldrich's "Flight of the Phoenix". It has two levels. The surface level (which is the only one most of the comments and reviews address) is a tense "for men only" adventure story about the crash of an old company plane in the desert and the efforts of the survivors to rebuild the plane before their limited supply of water runs out. But what moves the film into cinema greatness is its hidden core, an allegorical story of the components of modern civilization and the way they mesh (and sometimes don't mesh) together in synergistic combinations.
