4-0 out of 5 stars The Story As Real Depth
A brilliant film, wonderfully directed by Jim McBride, it breaks all the cheesy corny conventions of the TV movie, the story moves and lives just as vibrantly as the characters do.The acting is amazing, the story has real depth. If look close, you'll notice that also the characters of the Mexican policemen have been drawn nicely. A movie for those who like to watch better movies only.
4-0 out of 5 stars grand escapism
This movie is great viewing.Just the ticket for people trapped in a mundane existence. It starts out in seedy Vera Cruz sailors bars and takes you on a wild ride with desperate characters in a romp through beautifully shot southern Mexico. One of those great adventures in a foreign land movies.A boozy, brawling, sexy, and somewhat vulgar movie, and very entertaining!

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a DVD (and might I suggest a Re-make?)
First of all, I have no idea why this film is not available on DVD yet. You might be looking at my rating right now and thinking "He only gave it 3 stars? Who cares if it comes out on DVD!" Let me explain.
5-0 out of 5 stars DVD, PLEASE!!
When, when, when is this terrific movie going to come out on DVD?The mystery is great, the acting terrific and I defy anyone who sees it for the first time to figure it out!

3-0 out of 5 stars Huston In A Minor Key
While not necessarily one of the shining stars of director John Huston's career, "The List of Adrian Messenger" is a fairly engrossing mystery. George C. Scott stars as a retired MI-5 inspector who is given a list of 11 men by his good friend Adrian Messenger (John Merivale). When the men on the list--and Messenger himself--all end up dead, Scott must discover what links them together, and who is eliminating them one by one. The excellent supporting cast includes Herbert Marshall, Jacques Roux, and Dana Wynter, but the central gimmick of the film is spotting the cameo appearances by Tony Curtis, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, and Robert Mitchum. It's not hard to spot the heavy makeup; it's tougher figuring out who is behind it. Huston himself also makes a cameo toward the end, but without makeup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tower of Terror
I thought it was a very entertaining movie. It had an interesting story and some very good special effects. Some of the action sequences at the end were done well as well.I would recommend this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SISTERS JELOUSY TURNS TO WITCHCRAFT!
This movie is pretty interesting, the story isn't transparent and the characters are well rounded. Basically the story is about this crazy old bitch named Abigale Gregory (love the name!) who is envious of her child star sister Sally Shine (like Shirley Temple) played by Cory Matthews sister in the later episodes of "Boy Meets World". Sally and a couple of other stars are lost in an elevator crash many years ago. Loser Buzzy who is a writer for trashy magazines is contacted by Abigale who tells Buzzy the whole story. Buzzy gets interesed and his niece (Dunst) snoop around. Anyway if you want to see a crazy old witch do an evil laugh, perform voodoo, have a sick box of Sally Shine dolls with no heads in her room then this movie is for you. I laughed so hard at it!!! It was a good time, even at the end there is a cool song called "My Dreams" sung by one of the star ghost. This movie is filled with lots of laughs and great fun for the light hearted.

Editorial Review

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite film-noir!
LAURA starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, amd Clifton Webb, directed by Otto Preminger, shines as a dusky jewel among les films-noirs. Tierney is never so beautiful and unattainable as in this movie, especially to the men who love her. She is an appealing and wholesome girl with a quick mind, exquisite taste, and a glamorous lifestyle. Unfortunately, Laura is not a wise judge of character, which explains why she has so many "characters" in her life. The screenplay is clever, witty and flowing and all the performances are superb. This is a film worth having since it needs to be watched more than once to absorb the naunces.

Otto Preminger directs this 1944 noir thriller starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews.Dana Andrews plays McPherson, the hard-boiled detective investigating the shocking murder of a society woman, Laura, in New York.McPherson focuses on Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), a sardonic sophisticate who writes a newspaper column and has a radio talk show.Lydecker was a good friend of Laura's but despised her playboy fiancee Shelby (Vincent Price). Inprocess of the investigation McPherson falls in love with Laura's portrait.Fortunately for McPherson, Laura returns--apparently the body of the girl found in the apartment was not Laura!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Thriller
The Glass Key is a murder mystery thriller starring two staples of the film noir genre. Alan Ladd stars as a man looking for the truth and using his wits to twists information in his favor. Veronica Lake plays the beautiful daughter of a potential Senator, the sister of a man who has been murdered. The victim's girlfriend is played by the beautiful Bonita Granville.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, mesmerizing mystery
I saw this several years ago and noticed it was on a late movie recently. This time I was more struck by the quality of the work than the first time.It seems that almost every aspect of this film reeks with elegance and subtlety. First of all, Meryl Streep is great. This is before she became so affecting as she was wont to do in her later films. Then Roy Schneider as the psychiatrist turns in a brilliant understated performance. The villianess was incredible in her chameleon-like personality and actions. (The scene at her apartment where the camera slowly slides to reveal the mutilated detective will stay with you for a long time.)5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few movies that still sends chills down my spine
I remember I saw this movie when I was a kid, and it gave me nightmares.Robert Benton was a genius when he directed this movie. The way he builds up the suspense in certain scenes gives you that creepy feeling.Although the ending is very quiet and somewhat contrived, it has a certain originality to it.5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable movie
I saw this movie years ago, forgot the name, and have been looking for it ever since. If you like a good old scary suspense movie with characters you care about this is for you.It is a movie that is better than the sum ofit's parts and they are darned good. As usualk the Charlie Chan series is great and I will be ordering more in the future.
4-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD CHAN OUTING
I Really resent the fact that Turner Classic stopped showing the Charlie Chan films due to protests by Asian Americans. Were the films racist and stereotyping Orientals? Yeah...Sure they were. But how many movies of the 30's and 40's were not stereotypical in some way? Whether it was of any race or creed. Hiding them away doesn't mean they never happened. And although the actors who portrayed Charlie Chan may not have been Asian, they always portrayed him in a favorable light as being much smarter than the crooks he helped to capture. And of course many co-starred Keye Luke as #1 son who was an Asian-American.

Editorial Review

Neil Simon wrote this 1976 spoof in which virtually every famous fictional detective of the 1930s and 1940s congregate at the home of a mysterious fellow (Truman Capote) to try and solve the mystery of who's trying to kill them all. Simon's jokes are mostly obvious, and the film's real appeal is the clever concept matched with fine--sometimes legendary--actors. Peter Falk plays a very Bogart-like Sam Spade equivalent, James Coco is a Hercule Poirot wannabe, Peter Sellers does a Charlie Chan bit, David Niven and Maggie Smith are reflections of Nick and Nora.... You get the picture. Lighthearted and silly, this is cotton-candy comedy for the cast as well as viewers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets better with every viewing!
With it seems less and less worth watching on television, my wife and I can always count on many a good laugh when watching this outstanding classic.Funny without having to be vulgar, this movie should be in everyones collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe anything you see or hear
"Murder by Death" is a delightful and loving tribute/criticism about murder mysteries in the mid-20th century. Bringing together the characters from many famous series--Sam Spade, the Charleses, Miss Marple, Charlie Chan, etc.--and having them played by some of the great actors of the period--Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, David Niven, Elsa Lancaster, etc.--produced an enjoyable story. The twist after twist after twist amuses right to the end. My only concern is that, once one realizes that nothing is as it seems, a bit of the "suspense" is lost and replaced by waiting for the next layer to be peeled off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Neil Simon!!!!
I have loved this movie from the very first moment I saw it for a number of reasons.Firsta very well-written spoof of murder mysteries with some top-notch jokes and some not so top-notch jokes. But when you look at the whole you are very pleasantly surprised and you will enjoy this project over and over again.

3-0 out of 5 stars 2.5, maybe...
Raymond Chandler's wisecracking, star-crossed private eye Philip Marlowe is transplanted into the swinging '60s where hopheads, strippers and psychiatrists join the usual compliment of thugs and goons that make his life miserable.James Garner gets a nice dry run for the "Rockford Files" TV show, while Rita Moreno bares all in her climactic stripping scene.Honestly, the script is not that great -- for the life of me I couldn't actually figure out who did what, or why... But it's still a fun film, in a campy kinda way.The film's one truly great moment is a scene is with Caroll O'Connor as a police detective who, having wearied of playing Marlowe's schnook, bursts into a violent tirade about how lousy his job is, and nearly beats the handcuffed private eye to death. It's a scene that could stand tasteful recycling elsewhere and, I suspect, was only in the film because O'Connor improv-ed it and made *something* good happen in this otherwise somewhat addled production...

5-0 out of 5 stars Garner as Private Eye as Tenatious as a Bobo Doll
Garner wins our sympathy as a battered P.I. who's client doesn't like him and neither do the thugs who cross his path. This movie will make you feel like laughing and crying at the some time. But you know that Marlowe is tough enough to come out on top at the end of the day.Sort of corny in a Seventies kind of way, Marlowe is definitely comforting mind candy so curl up with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars "Rockford Files"+ "Shaft" = "Marlowe" A terrible combonation

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Charlie Chan Entry
This Charlie Chan entry starring Sidney Toler has our favorite detective from Honolulu dealing with sabatoge and murder at a convention for detectives. Chan's enthusiastic offspring, Jimmy (Sen Yung), arrives in New York just in time to help pop. Chan's comment about young Jimmy's involvement in previous cases to a fellow detective is a scream!
4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Entry in the Chan Series
Charlie Chan films are frequently accused of pandering to racial stereotypes. There is a certain truth to this, but Charlie Chan and company were neither more nor less stereotypical than such other popular series as the "Blondie" or "Dr. Kildare" series, and--while we may occasionally roll our eyes at a few 1930s sensibilities--its stereotypes are never mean-spirited and Charlie (along with his various sons) is always presented in a positive light.

Firsthand, as a movie in itself, this is [...]. The original novel by Anne Rice titled "Exit to Eden" plunged fearlessly into the depths of an alternate sexual lifestyle, bringing S&M from a shady dungeon into the light of an island paradise where people were given the chance to explore and understand their sexual fantasies in a safe and open environment. The journey toward sexual understanding (and understanding of the self) that Lisa the dominatrix, and Elliot, her slave, find themselves on, is at the forefront.

1-0 out of 5 stars Execrable Eden
I remember this as one of the most unpleasant viewing experiences of my life. Gary Marshall takes that sugar-frosted sleaze thing that underlied 'Pretty Woman' to the nth degree here, and the results are excruciating. Not sexy. Not funny. Not fit for human consumption. Sort of the Disney version of Pasolini's 'Salo' - only way way worse. I could never have imagined how bad this movie would be. Worth a look maybe for the slack-jawed what-were-they-smoking cinematic-train-wreck horror it inspires.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this movie available on DVD?
I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in the late 1980s and love all the Peter Ustinov Hercule Poirot films. Why isn't this on DVD?I don't buy VHS tapes anymore, but if this was released on DVD I would buy it immediately for my Poirot collection. If anyone from the movie studio/distributor reads these reviews, please release this movie on DVD!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars entertaining - star studded - romp
APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH is on the whole a very enjoyable big-screen outing for Agatha Christie's portly super-sleuth, played wonderfully by Peter Ustinov. The cast assembled for this production reads like a page ripped from Who's Who, and the entire movie is a joy even on repeat screenings.
3-0 out of 5 stars Winner loses the plot
This is the third in the series of big screen adaptations to star Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. Unfortunately for him, the director for this movie was the abomination of a British director, Michael Winner. Despite this handicap, 'Appointment With Death' does prove to be a reasonably entertaining outing for the famous Belgian detective, thanks in part to the great Christie source material and a couple of outstanding performances in the cast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Killer!
A very good murder mystery. However, this is not the funniest performance Abbott & Costello put on.One of the better stories for an Abbott & Costello movie. This movie reminds me much of "Clue" and has it's similarities to the Pink Panther's "Shot In The Dark".Overall this is a fine movie for murder mystery fans but if you're looking for laughs there aren't as many in this one.Try "Rio Rita", "In The Navy" or "Time Of Their Lives".

2-0 out of 5 stars A great Warner Olan film
An excellent chan film. lots of mystery. a little soft ed on quinine which was indeed used for various ailments back in the olden days. I agree with another reader about Warner Olan on DVD.I have purchased budget dvd's with 2,3 or 4 programs on one DVD and I would suspect the right medium could do the same with some of the chan films.

AS much as the Chan movies are filled with ridiculous stereotypes it's sad that Turner Classic Movies stopped showing these films due to protests from Asian Americans.Stereotypes aside these films always showed Chan in a positive light and above all provided great entertainment.I used to love staying up with my dad as a kid and watching these on the late show. Those were the days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Movie
I love this movie. It's a quirky mix of hard-boiled detective and occult fantasy. It's funny and clever. I wore out my old VHS copy years ago and would love to have it on DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this movie on DVD?
This deserves a DVD, whether on it's on own, or with a few of similiar, lower-profile films. Why don't the production companies look to see what films people actually *want* to buy, instead of what they think people want to buy? If it's a 'cult' film, they can put a few together; most people tend to like the same type of films, the same actors; it's not brain surgery people! We'd probably have a lot fewer bargain bins at Walmart if they did this! Please, move into the modern world, give us a DVD. :)

This is definitely a parody of both the paranormal genre and classic hardboiled detectives, but it is done with tremendous style and grace. From the landlady who puts a spell on the cards she gives Fred Ward so they always come up first when he reaches for one of his own to the casual assumption that everyone in Hollywood uses magic, this an entertaining film worth seeing if you catch it on TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
The whole series has some great movies and some awful movies...this one is just fantastic.Boris Karloff is great and the movie is a must have.I cant wair for the DVD!

1-0 out of 5 stars You cant be serious?
Ok so Ive never seen a whole charlie chan movie and probably never will so I cant judge the quality of an entire film. Its not surprising that all the reviews here trying to justify racism are written by caucasians. So since all movies in the 30's were racist, it makes them ok....what a crock! So people shouldnt complain about this movie because they were generous enough to allow an Asian to star in a film instead of using makeup to make non-Asians into a what a stereotypical Asian is supposed to look like.Oh brother, do you guys know what the definition of racism is?Yes people have a right to watch this film if they are so inclined. But people also have the right to say films like this belong in the garbage.Would caucasians complain if Native Americans made a film that depicted the genocidal acts of caucasians which include racial overtones?Come on its 2006, get real people, and get out of the trailer park please.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST IN THE SERIES
I Really resent the fact that Turner Classic stopped showing the Charlie Chan films due to protests by Asian Americans. Were the films racist and stereotyping Orientals? Yeah...Sure they were. But how many movies of the 30's and 40's were not stereotypical in some way?Whether it was of any race or creed.Hiding them away doesn't mean they never happened. And although the actors who portrayed Charlie Chan may not have been Asian, they always portrayed him in a favorable light as being much smarter than the crooks he helped to capture. And of course many co-starred Keye Luke as #1 son who was an Asian-American.

Editorial Review

Jeff Bridges stars as Matthew Scudder, the flawed hero of Lawrence Block's novel. He's anex-cop, now a private eye, who constantly battles his own alcoholism. His struggle isn't helped when he becomes involved with a hooker and, in trying to aid her, winds up at the center of a struggle involving pimps and drug dealers. 4-0 out of 5 stars Well told tale of decadent lifestyles in the 80s. One of my faves from that decade.
In spite of poor reviews of "character development" and things of that nature, I think this is a well told story that uses typecasting in building its characters. And while maybe that's not done as effectively as, say "The Godfather", it is done well. Rosanna Arquette plays a snobbish high priced call girl is in her most fetching role, one up from "Desperately Seeking Susan". Andy Garcia makes a name for himself as an arrogant, smug coke dealer, and Jeff Bridges plays an alcoholic cop quite well. The story culminates in the only way it could given the nature of the lead characters, who define the decadence of the 80s. I never understood the panning of this movie, though many of the critics I respect the most have done just that. This is one of my favorites, certainly from the 80s, which was full of sleepers that garnered more followings after being released on cable. The surrounding character actors accentuate the flavor of the 80s this story takes place in- the rolled up sleeves on the sport coats, the early generation car phones, the fashions, the jargon. Garcia, Arquette and Bridges are all fabulous and alone are reasons worth watching this movie, despite any poor reviews. Maybe i don't know any better, but I loved this movie. Correct me if I'm wrong, even movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" were received poorly upon initial release, not to put the 2 flicks in the same league. I say leave it to yourself to find out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worthy of a DVD release
This movie (which I think was Hal Ashby's last) is under-rated and under-viewed.It has excellent performances by Jeff Bridges and Andy Garcia, a director with a good handle on the material and how best to approach it for the screen, and a good screenplay by Oliver Stone. This movie is as "hard-boiled" as it gets.THIS FILM SHOULD BE RELEASED ON DVD.
4-0 out of 5 stars buy this movie or ill have mundo here sneeze!
the 1st time i same this i was truely disappointed.then my friend rented it and i was listening to it in another room.....talk about great lines!i went in with the wrong attitude.i was thinking this was gonna have a high body count(how gullible)!anyway,i ran into the room, made him rewind to the beginning and then realized the mistake i made.its not an action movie though it has its fleeting moments.its more of a drama.but its all about the lines.theres also great back and forth tention between jeff and andy.i highly recommend this with this bit of advise;dont think action, listen to the lines!on a different note, why are there so many great movies NOT available on DVD format! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Watchable but not top tier thriller
This is a 1980's updating of the classic 50's pulp novel by the great Mickey Spillaneand it has its fair share ofviolence and sex -and is not recommended for those who find such elements unacceptable .
4-0 out of 5 stars Armand Assante as "Mike Hammer".
For Mature Adults Only!Contains male nudity and full frontal female nudity.Scenes of orgy and sexual situations.Rated "R".
3-0 out of 5 stars Spillane, pain, and no work for your brain
This is pretty much a 1982 by-the-numbers rehash of both the Mickey Spillane 1947 novel and the 1953 film of the same name. Here, though, Mike Hammer's secretary Velda not only carries a gun but can use it as well as her boss. And here as well, unlike the 1953 Hollywood Code restrictions that kept film directors from showing all the naughty bits, director Richard Heffron can display Armand Assante's Hammer and Barbara Carrera's sexy Caroline Bennett going at it with wild abandon.Read more
