5-0 out of 5 stars Dark Star Review
This film still made me laugh quite a bit, but it is something best watched while slightly intoxicated I think, at least it was for my friends. There is a fantastic elevator scene and the fact that it was made so long ago makes it a bit of a novelty for science fiction fans.I'd compare it only slightly to Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Satire
A classic if underbudgeted satire from the mid-70's.The humor and atmosphere is a cool reminder of the "What are we fighting for?" popular mentallity of the Vietnam Era

2-0 out of 5 stars Space Madness
Dark Star is as if the Ren and Stimpy episode, "Space Madness" were made into a live action film and extended into feature film length. Like George Lucas' debut THX-1138, it is a film that would be forgotten if the director had not gone onto bigger and better things. It might pass if you have a fetish for cheesy 70's sci-fi such as Soylent Green and Logan's Run. For the rest of us all I can say is give me a break. The talking voice is lifted straight from HAL in 2001. The effects are so terrible that its hard not to burst out laughing when one of the main characters have a dialogue and a fight with a beachball (!). Otherwise, it just seems as if everyone is stoned. I can forgive John Carpenter, because after all its just a student film and he went on to make Halloween, which is probably one of the best horror films of all times. I just wouldn't rush to watch this. You'll feel as if you're trapped in space with the characters the whole time. As one of them says, "I like it up here". ... Read more

Editorial Review

This low-budget crime thriller has the feel of a major blockbuster and owes its roots to the hard-edged crime movies of the 1930s. Christopher Walken stars as a drug kingpin who is released from prison and vows to use his position and influence--and criminal enterprise--for charitable means. But a core group of New York cops are all over him and his gang, determined to go to war, whatever the cost, to bring him down. Eventually his empire--headquartered at, of all places, Donald Trump's Plaza Hotel--crumbles under the weight of double-crossing and a body count of open warfare with the cops. This is one of the most stylish films of the last decade, with a strong supporting cast (including Lawrence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes, and David Caruso) and some truly enthralling set pieces, including a stunning car chase and gunfight across a rain-soaked Queensboro Bridge. The film's tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top style offsets its nihilism; and its riveting visuals will have audiences hooked from beginning to end. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Walken Is The Greatest Actor Ever
Christopher Walken and I are the same age and come from the same neighborhood in Astoria, Queens, NYC.His father owned Walken's Bakery in Astoria.Did we go to the same Public School, I don't remember back that far.But I have been a huge fan of his from the beginning when he played the nutty brother of Diane Keaton in Annie Hall.He didn't have much screen time in Annie Hall but you sure remembered him!
4-0 out of 5 stars Wicked
I'll just add that this movie has Wesley Snipes as an honorable cop and Larry Fishburne as a vicious gangster, which is a reversal of those two's usual roles.David Caruso is great, Walken is Walken.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's different...
I thought this was a strange movie. Yet I admit it was interesting to watch. Christopher Walken plays a drug kingpin who just gets out of prison. He gets his people together to assert control over the criminal world. Laurence Fishburne's character is one of the most interesting to watch. He's manic compared to Walken's cold demeanor. Yet they're very close.

Daring reporter John Lawrence (Robert Clarke) narrates this grippingtale of an alien's attempt to take over a tiny village in Scotland. As the story opens, Lawrence is visiting his old friend, Professor Elliot, who's made the startling discovery of a new planet that is approaching Earth at breakneck speed. Soon Elliot's lovely daughter, Enid, has spotted a mysterious craft in the middle of the moor. Lawrence and Elliot decide to investigate, inexplicably allowing the clearly evil Dr. Mears to assist. Lost the plot? Not to worry! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The hour is near and The Man from Planet X will be waiting
The story is mostly narrated by a newspaperman John Lawrence (Robert Clarke) that also takes part in an adventure that we now hear only as a rumor. It takes place in 1951 on an isolated Scottish island near the end of the world (in more ways than one). A planet (Planet X) is approaching ours and they seam to have sent a vanguard for what purpose we do not know.
3-0 out of 5 stars 1950's entertaining S-F
"The Man From Planet X" is a low-budget black and white 1950 science-fiction movie, one of the earliest of the genre that included "The Thing," "Them," etc.I believe this VHS edition was released in 2000 and it is a good quality transfer, full screen with no closed captioning. As for the quality of the movie itself, do you really have to ask?I first saw it when I was eleven and I thought it was very scary and atmospheric, with all that fog blowing across the Scottish moors late at night, and the grotesque alien peering out of the porthole of his tiny spacecraft. The production designer did a nice job with an obviously minimal budget, and the lighting, settings, and costumes do contribute to the suspenseful atmosphere. The movie has all the usual 1950's S-F cliches, including the strange object approaching the Earth, the wise old scientist and his beautiful daughter who falls in love with the courageous investigating reporter and who screams piercingly and predictably at the sight of the hideous visitor from space, and so forth. If you're in the mood, and if movies like this could draw you to the theater during your childhood, you'll enjoy it. And it's fun to be eleven again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scarey Alien
I haven't seen this one yet, but from what I understand, the Alien bears an uncanny resemblance to the Kid From Deliverance. Now THAT's worth watching! ... Read more

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. 5-0 out of 5 stars Barbarella's influence on pop-culture...!
OK, we all know that Duran Duran got their name from the evil doctor in Barbarella, but Barbarella's influence on pop-culture extends far beyond that!
2-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment...
Jane Fonda was not only an excellent actress but a beautiful, if opinonated (remember Hanoi Jane?), woman.I watched this as a teenager and despite the "striptease" this has to be one of her worst.Hormones be damned, watching this was a waste of time.If you like Fonda, try Klute. She was an excellent actress --- but no one could survive this mess.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Stupid and boring"
I purchased this movie because I always thought Jane Fonda was very sexy. I still believe that but this movie sucked. It was corny and everything from Barbarella's carpeted space ship to the costumes made me think "low budget".

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope this comes to DVD
I saw this movie a couple of times on HBO and was completely awed by it each time. The woman singing on the phone with a sax player and a jewish rabbi chiming in gave me goosebumps. I have been watching for the DVD to come out for years but it doesn't look like anyone is planning to release it.
4-0 out of 5 stars I've been searching!
This was really good from what I recall. I saw this when I was younger on HBO and I remember Taral Hicks singing on the phone. This has stuck in my mind for years and I would love to purchase, but it is on VHS. Like others, I don't want to buy it on VHS either. Hopefully, I can find a rental just to refresh my memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, A Must See!
This movie really is poignant and it flows well from story to story. Taral Hicks sings, which is one of the more moving stories in the set. Very pretty young lady and you can see her in another favorite of mine, A Bronx Tale - as Jane.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great And Funny Horror Classic: Belongs In Every Collection!
This is one the greatest horror classics of all time. Ash (Bruce Campbell) pulls it off as the bumbling hero in this third entry of the Evil Dead Trilogy. I have seen the film many times, and yet never tire of viewing it. I must say I was delighted and pleased when I watched the film in the theatres, and laughed at the entire film's concept of humor that was put into it. Being catapulted back into 14th-century and having to battle the evil forces of the dead are just great.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic.
The third installment of the "Evil Dead" series find hero Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) transported to the Middle Ages, where he is enlisted by the English Army to aid in a battle against The Deadites, a horrific group of zombies intent on destroying England. Ash agress to play along in return for a way to get home. What ensues is one of the greatest action / comedy movies ever made. Bruce Campbell plays Ash better than ever, delivering many a classic line and owning the screen. The special effects are awesome, and the film as a whole is timeless. A must have.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Version sucks if you saw the initial version
OK...this version is only good if you cannot get hold of the 2 disc version or the original release. It's had too much cut out and changed that made the film a classic! This is not as funny and has removed many of the "Cult" lines. Only buy this one if you don't wish to pay more...or can't find the 2 disc:)

2-0 out of 5 stars The nadir of Corman's shining collection
Peter Lorre's ,"The Black Cat",is charmingly done.Yet,the other two are stinkers.I'm a Corman fan,but this was boring and silly to watch.I think they had a good idea ,bringing the trilogy it to the big screen. But,this version and interpretation of Poe's masterpieces didn't translate well at all.So ,beware of the dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful horror anthology
Vincent Price leads an all-star cast in this horror film. Price appears in all three segments. In the first, he plays a man named "Locke" who blames the death of his wife on his daughter who's just came back after 26 years. This is great, verbal horror sort of like a throwback to "Night Gallery" or other dramatic anthology shows, where the horror is in the character's personality and not in the graphics. only the final minutes does the story turn into what AIP movie goers expect. The second story, as has been voted by mostly all on here, is the stand-out. Peter Lorre and Joyce Jameson team up with Vincent in a re-telling of "Cask of Amontillado" but re-titled "The Black Cat". If you've heard or read the story, you pretty much know what's going to happen...the wine tasting scene is hilarious. The final segment offers Basil Rathbone and Vincent although Rathbone has the most action as Price's character, Valdemar, is bed-ridden. Rathbone plays an evil mesmerist who mentally tortures Valdemar's wife and keeps Valdemar in suspended animation you could say in an effort to kill him and run off with the wife! The segment ends with a memorable scene that isn't really sick...but it's not for the squeamish, either! It's one of Rathbone's finest roles, aside from Sherlock Holmes and the hilarious nut-case character in "Comedy of Terrors". This film came along in 1962. At 85 minutes in length, it's short for a feature-length film...but the material and the first-rate acting by everyone make it seem even SHORTER!!

1-0 out of 5 stars GARBAGE
Don't waste your time or money with this DVD.The best part of the DVD is probably the Trailers and most of those are Garbage also.My DVD came loose in the package and scratched, too bad it didn't do any damage to ruin the Movie.I couldn't wait until the Movie was over, I would have stopped it earlier, but wanted to see if any damage was done. You'll be counting the minutes and seconds after watching the first half or even earlier. The last story was stupid and horrible and should have been left off.Don't waste your money, spend it on the cheap $5-6 horror DVD's, because at least those can be somewhat entertaining. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Aroused
Roger Vadim's twisted satire of Southern California and the American education program was a flop on first release, and it was a long time before he dared return to the USA to make another feature. But today PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW definitely has the hallmarks of a masterpiece, anchored by four brilliant performances.First off, Rock Hudson in perhaps his last important picture. He's a little fleshy and with his shirt off the camera seemes reluctant to travel past his navel for fear of exposing some extra weight on his hips. And Vadim's cameraman (Chuck Rosher, who later did A WEDDING and THREE WOMEN for Robert Altman) hones in on some penetrating closeups which really show up his crows feet--he's lived and that seasons his character. As usual, he's the men girls want and the man boys want to be, but here it's a deeper and considerably darker version of himself than he ever let people see on the screen. His ideal married life is something of a sham, or is it?A cryptic epilogue with Telly Savalas makes us wonder if "Tiger" hasn't really the perfect marriage after all.Vadim needed a larger-than-life star for "Tiger" and he certainly got one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodtimes
Stoners, music, girls. 80's High school times in Cali. It takes you back to when vans were cool and the girls had way to much hairspray. Everytime I watch this movie Im ready to hit the beach. Good movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie they would never make today!
This is a great film. But, sadly, it would never be made today. I mean, try to imagine a film in which a 15 or 16 year of character has an abortion and it is taken as just another plot point. (Compare this to Crowe's Singles which brought back the oh so convienent miscarriage, like something out of a 1940's movie.) Also, imagine a film begin made today which invests so much time in developing its characters. Yep, you can't. So enjoy it for what it is, a window on a lost world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Times indeed!
One of the classic high school movies, Fast Times spawned a slew of teenage talent on the big screen, but no one was more memorable in this movie than Sean Penn as Spicoli.Amy Heckerling cuts out a slice of Southern Californian life from a San Bernardino high school that shows both honor students and misfits alike. While the signature moments belonged to Spicoli, there were many other great scenes such as the ongoing burger war in which Judge Reinhold finds himself on the short end of the spatula.Meanwhile his little sis, a seemingly innocent Jennifer Jason Leigh, experiments with dating and sex with an amusing pair of misfits, Brian Backer and Robert Romanus.Phoebe Cates tries to set her young prodigy straight but to no avail.Forest Whitaker even has a significant moment in this movie as the bruising defensive lineman who takes out the destruction of his prized car on the opposing team.Little did he know that Spicoli had a hand in it.But, it is the hilarious relationship between Spicoli and Mr. Hand (Ray Walston) that steals the show.Fast Times may appear a bit dated, but it hasn't lost any of its humor.

there was a reason this film never made it to the theatres. now, i know why.
5-0 out of 5 stars Drama AND Action!
This movie is set in a period where emotions are banned due to them being unpredictable and often causing unfavorable results. What follows by banning emotions and all things that would lead to emotion is a very oppressive scenario indeed.People are ordered to take a drug to drown out their emotions, and all objects (including music and books) that could lead to emotion are destroyed. As I said, very oppressive. After missing a dose of his emotion-blocking drug, Christian Bale's character sees the light, both literally and figuratively. What follows is a suspenseful action-packed plot, and ultimately a good ending.Glad our government is not like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Furious force of action and suspense
When action leaped up in mid air and dance like fighting sequences splattered on my screen, the first question I asked myself was "How come I have never heard of this movie before?"It came and went into the movie theaters like a hushed shadow, yet hundreds of outstanding five star reviews prove it was well received and it did not slip by silently. Two cool guys head out on motorcycles in search of... well, America, but they'll settle for sex and drugs and rock & roll. There's plenty of each as Captain America (Peter Fonda) and paranoid Billy (Dennis Hopper) encounter a commune, convert a small-town drunk (Jack Nicholson) to the Grin Reefer, pick up two pretty lilies of the alley, Karen Black and Toni Basil (who hit the pop charts in the '80s--check out "Mickey"), and get shot for having long hair. Nicholson won an Oscar nomination and Best Supporting Actor nods from the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle, but his acting was better than they knew: he had to pretend to be straight and gradually get plastered in many, many takes using real weed. 1-0 out of 5 stars guess you have to be stoned...
I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. I did NOT enjoy this, and I ride, so I assumed I would like this. I guess you have to ride AND use drugs to appreciate this....

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy Rider
This is one of those movies that is on the AFI's "Top 100 films of all time" list. In my opinion that list is bogus. Only about a quarter of the films on that list deserve to be there. I don't think Easy Rider is anywhere close to one of the top 100 films of all time. Easy Rider seems fairly pointless. Billy(Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) drive around on their choppers, pick up a hippie, and drive around some more. That sums up the first half of the film. Don't get me wrong, it isn't exactly boring, but it isn't exactly a great story either. To be honest this movie doesn't really have a story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Unique when new but dull for today's audience
I was 11 years old when this came out. So of course I heard a lot about it but didn't see this movie. So when I had a chance to watch it I decided to see what the fuss was about. Well, considering the times it was made, it was a radical departure from the norm. Nudity, pot smoking and perhaps other no-nos of that period.

"One aspect of determinism is manifested in the fact that the unsaved don't recognize the sin in their lives; they're unconscious of it. They don't suffer pangs of conscience because they don't recognize evil exists. This is because they're all predestined to Hell and therefore never brought to the Light of metanoia{conversion}...so when considering the salvatory aspects of facing guilt, suffering is a good thing. We should all hope to feel guilty, to feel pain, so we can seek pardon and ultimately freedom. Not to be confused with this years Oscar winning sensation, you can't help but conclude that Crash 2005 must be referencing its older namesake with the opening dialogue... "We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much that we crash into each other just so we can feel something." Crash 2005 is a blockbuster on the controversial subject of racial tensions in Los Angeles.
1-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable.
I watch movies at the expense of most life sustaining activity. I'm truly obsessed. And this film is very certainly the worst film I have ever seen in my life. I don't mean it's bad as in "Plan 9 From Outer Space" bad -- it's not so bad it is good. It is just profoundly regrettable. I'm not an academic cinephile, and cannot deconstruct its badness in a discursive discourse on psychomorphological eroticism of the postmodern automobile and its inexorable sequelae of non sequitora and ontological teabaggery.Oh...whoops. Sorry for the SPOILER. Uh...all I can tell you is it just ain't no good. But hey! Watch "Crash" made in 2006(?). Now THAT is a brilliant film. Thanks for reading.-CC

Right from King Curtis over the opening credits I couldn't take my ears off this film and when Withnail told the farmer that they'd gone on holiday by mistake I almost choked on my own Camberwell Carrot. And hair really are our aerials, I know that now. All this and Jimi Hendrix too. Nice one Bruce. Magic book too, that Thomas Penman--I read it round about every Autumn and it hasn't failed yet to leave me in stitches. A bit like the movie really. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Believe?
Also known as "Night of the Eagle" this film is based on Fritz Leiber's novel "Conjure Wife".
4-0 out of 5 stars The beauty burns...
A most intriguing film about a witch who uses her talents and skills to help further their career of her ungracious husband, a Cultural Anthropology Professor teaching at a prestigious University - a handsome gentleman who is desired by both the student body and the staff, thus complicating matters in his personal life.
5-0 out of 5 stars BURNING LOVE
It's interesting to see the comparison of this 1962 gem with the 1957 "Curse of the Demon."While I favor "Curse" a little more, this tale of modern witchcraft still maintains it's eerie, if slowly paced, atmosphere of impending doom.Since the plot has been so expertly detailed in other reviews, I might add that the film works mainly from the intensely atmospheric camerawork and direction by Sidney Havers.Peter Wyngarde, a masculine though not particularly handsome fellow, oozes masculine domination in his well-balanced performance.Margaret Johnston as the limping professor and fellow witch, is reminiscent of young Angela Lansbury, and her delight in her evil is a joy to watch. And one can forgive Janet Blair if she did seem a little out of kilter for the leading role.Blair up to to this point had been known for more lightweight and romantic roles; her performance doesn't helm the film, but neither does it detract from it.The final scene involving the huge bird is still frightening.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't feeling this one baby.
If I had to describe `Sheba Baby,' the best I can come up with is Pam Grier Light with some really bad mellow drama. I really tried, but this movie just didn't work for me. The action scenes were dull, the acting was surprisingly poor, and some of these characters were TOO stereotypical to even be funny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pam Grier, Forever!
This is the first of Pam Grier's efforts that I would not lump wholly in the exploitation category.Sure, there's lots of gunplay and a redundant catfight. That said, the dialogue here avoids the tongue-and-cheek quality that was evident in "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown" and the villains here are more realistic and not as cartoonish. The underlying theme here are the underworld elements that threaten legitimate black entrepreneurs.Because the film deals with the threat more seriously the message becomes more potent.Even in this low-budget effort Grier just commands the screen like any of her contemporaries and would give a run for the money for today's top actresses. She was definitely ahead of her time.I can't recall if Halle Berry thanked her in her Oscar speech. She does not appear nude here but she looks so fabulous clothed that your imagination will do somersaults.Timeless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it just to see Pam in a wetsuit
This may not be Pam Grier's best film, but I give it high marks, because there's a long stretch towards th
