Symbolic, Hypnotic, Sense savory film on life as a literal book of art!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pillow Book
Very dramatic and intreging movie. Not your typical story it has a love triangle with a touch of Romeo & Juliet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ewan McGregor must have needed the money
I once thought that any movie with Ewan McGregor in it would be entertainment. I found 'The Pillow Book' more disturbing than entertaining. It was difficult to follow, and I had a hard time figuring out just what the plot really was. The only appeal being when Ewan's pride would make an appearance next. I praise him for having the confidence to show full-frontals, yet it didn't add to the movie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A delightfully mad piece of filmmaking, however not for young children.
Shadow of the Vampire is a delightfully "Mad" piece of film-making.I have never enjoyed Defoe more. The film's cinematography is excellent as is the cast.It is a nice excercise in suspense and a great movie to watch with those who enjoy the genre. As a student of film, I will treasure this classic for many years to come. -Joe Saint John

5-0 out of 5 stars Shadow of the Vampire
Putting two of America's great actors (Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich), with Nicolas Cage as a producer should wield a fantastic film...A movie that will live on in memory and stand the test of time. That's not quite what you get, however. You get a well made, entertaining, and semi-funny fictional back story to the making of Nosferatu. You get two amazing performances by Dafoe and Malkovich; You get some great makeup effects. You get an enjoyable movie. I've never seen Nosferatu. The only thing I knew about it before seeing this film was that it was a silent vampire film and starred Max Schreck. Max Schreck isn't your usual actor who stars in a classic film and is known round the world. Schreck is an actor who's life remains a mystery to a lot of people. That's why this film works well. If this was about the making of The Ten Commandments (everyone knows who Charlton Heston is), this would not work. Anyway, Malkovich plays F.W. Murnau; Murnau has tried and failed to get the rights to Bram Stoker's "Dracula" so he changes the name of the character from Count Dracula to Count Orlock, then changes the name of the film from Dracula to Nosferatu. Murnau introduces Max Schreck to his skeptical crew as the ultimate method actor. Schreck will appear in the film only at night and in full makeup and costume. Problem is, Murnau has also made a deal with Schreck. Complete the film and get the blood of the films lead actress. It's definitely interesting. I can't say I see what a lot of critics saw in it (a few critics called it one of the ten best films of the year), but I did like it and it provides an interesting perspective. The film wouldn't have worked quite as well without the talent of director E. Elias Merhige (who directed the Marilyn Manson music video Cryptorchild and directed a film I haven't seen called Begotten). As for the DVD edition of SOTV, this is exactly what Special Features on a DVD should be. The film has a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette, Interviews with Willem Dafoe, Nicolas Cage, and E. Elias Merhige, A before-and-after montage of Dafoe's makeup process, a theatrical trailer. It's truly great stuff. To switch gears again for a moment, I want to comment on the films performances. John Malkovich is a very interesting actor; If he appeared on screen sewing for 15 minutes with no dialogue, he could probably find some way to make it fascinating. Willem Dafoe is a chameleon, but most of the characters he plays are pretty shady guys. I'm not sure if Dafoe has ever been better.
3-0 out of 5 stars it doesnt suck (your blood) at least ...
akin to "confessions of a dangerous mind" in that the movie takes a mostly-forgotten slice of popular history (here, the filming of the 1922 classic "nosferatu"), and gives it a back story loaded down with the fantastic and bizarre. i think the filmmakers thought they were making a great movie, but its really just a frequently fun exercise in vanity, highlighted by the fun hamming of willem dafoe as pseudo-vampire max schreck. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dark Humor Nearly Undoes Gangster Flick
This is certainly an enthralling picture that's very handsome looking. Two things to me nearly scuttle the picture. An obtrusive narration that undoes the tension for those of us unfamiliar with the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.Secondly, the film contains a lot of broad humor that for the most part falls flat.It makes the hoods seem like a rogues gallery from a cartoon.George Segal's enforcer is too tongue-in-cheek to be truly menacing.Jason Robards, however, is chilling as Al Capone. Not a bad picture but certainly a missed opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Accurate
I always did like this movie but the director (Roger Cormen) decided to switch many of the facts around (which Roger Cormen admitted). This was rather discouraging to me since my favorite movies are based upon true stories. The general plot, however, is accurate. It has been awhile since I have seen the movie but when I do again (soon) I will update this review with what parts of the movie are inaccurate (there are several). However, the actual murders in the Chicago garage are all too true. Overall, I thought this was a very good movie overall. It is rather violent...just like the people that are portrayed,

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
It's 1963 in the Bronx. There are gangs of teenage boys that's either/and by turf or ethnic group. The Wanderers are Italian. They were not like today's gangs. They fought mostly among other gang and hung out for fun. But it did get nasty between the Italians and the Blacks (the Del Bombers). And the Ducky Boys are pretty frightening. The Fordham Baldies look scary but their antics gave me a lot of laughs. I recommend this film even if you don't remember the early '60s. It's fast paced in general. This movie is pretty good fun. Half comedy and half drama. It has a great soundtrack if you like music from this era.
5-0 out of 5 stars This movie has heart
I love this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wanderers Forever!
The Wanderers came out in 1979, which was actually an amazing year for movies.Among the movies I have for that year in my collection are, Alien, the In Laws, Ten, North Dallas Forty, Breaking Away and of course, the reason the Wanderers was overlooked, the Warriors.Like the Wanderers, the Warriors was a gang movie set in New York, and both movies had their share of gang violence, but although both the Wanderers and Warriors share similar colors, there's where the similarity ends.

Editorial Review

It's better than the 1994 remake starring Kim Basinger and husband Alec Baldwin, but this 1972 thriller relies too heavily on the low-key star power of Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, and the stylish violence of director Sam Peckinpah, reduced here to a mechanical echo of his former glory.McQueen plays a bank robber whose wife (MacGraw) makes a deal with a Texas politician to have her husband released from prison in return for a percentage from their next big heist. But when the plan goes sour, the couple must flee to Mexico as fast as they can, with a variety of gun-wielding thugs on their trail. MacGraw was duly skewered at the time for her dubious acting ability, but the film still has a raw, unglamorous quality that lends a timeless spin to the familiar crooks-on-the-lam scenario. As always, Peckinpah rises to the occasion with some audacious scenes of action and suspense, including a memorable chase on a train that still grabs the viewer's attention. Not a great film, but a must for McQueen and Peckinpah fans. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Peckinpah's best
Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) has been granted parole by a man named Beynon under the condition that he robs a bank! Thats story idea behind this Peckinpah film. It moves along fairly slowly, until about halfway through when there is a chase scene inside a train. That was far and away the best part of the movie. Then the pace slows down again and continues that way pretty much until the end of the picture.
3-0 out of 5 stars Who Sam really wanted to play the Carol Ainsley McCoy role.
Well, it wasn't Ali MacGraw for sure. Sam wanted and promissed the role to Stella Stevens. Stella was stunning in Sam's "The Balad Of Cable Hogue" and should have been nominated for an Oscar for it. Sam was also impressed, as it turned out to be her role of a lifetime. Sam couldn't sell it to the head of Paramount, Robert Evans though, and being married to Ali as Robert was at the time, Ali got the McCoy role for "The Getaway" instead of Stella. The movie is much poorer for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve McQueen, master ofcool kill, hot love and sexy as all getout
Steve was all these things, and is he ever sorely missed.Steve, you died too young.Even with all his dark moods, unpredictability and reckless behavior, he had such a presence on film anyone in Hollywood would would put up with it just to be near him. This movie was written just for him, I can't imagine anyone else, especially not prissy Alec Baldwin, in that part.Ally McGraw was having an affair with Steve at the time so that's probably why she's the female lead. She's attractive, but I never cared for her acting. Sally Struthers played the dumb bimbo girlfriend to the thug that was after Steve with well acted dumb bimboness. If you know Sam Peckinpaw's movies you know the level of violence is integeral to the story.Enjoy! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars VHS not that bad.
I'll add a "ditto" to the comments on the series itself, nothing new to add there.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Dale's Journey Continues...
The "Twin Peaks" saga captivates with dark intensity tinged with left-field humor. Special Agent Dale Cooper is my favorite Maclachlan role, even as I discover this series ten years later. You can't stop now; this tape only makes you anxious to see the rest of what happens! Beyond who killed Laura Palmer...WHERE IS BOB? To be continued up through episode 29!!! It'll freak you out, in that bizarre twisted way only Lynch's "Twin Peaks" and Dale Cooper can!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Series is Great--The VHS Tapes Are Unwatchable!
BEWARE!! I know that it's going to be hard to wait for the rest of the episodes to be released to DVD (especially if you've already purchased and watched the first seven episodes on DVD), but trust me, wait for DVD. You'll end up saving yourself a lot of time and energy. The VHS tapes are in deplorable condition--the sound goes in and out, the screen is fuzzy and jumps, and it's difficult to make out what is going on. Don't try to struggle through it--just wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it in good condition. You'll be glad you did, especially when you come across the more "shocking" and exciting scenes in episodes 10-14. ... Read more

Scientists discover that a pair of giant crabs mutated by atomic tests is responsible for the disappearance of researchers on a remote island. The crabs, which assimilate the voices and intellects of their victims, slowly destroy the island as they thin out the rescue party until a do-or-die plan is hatched. This early effort by Roger Corman has been labeled as schlock due to its pulpy title and atrocious monster effects, but the script by Charles B. Griffith, while stretched thin by the usual low-budget constraints, is more intriguing and gently self-deprecating than a movie about monster crustaceans should be (Griffith also wrote the blackly comic scripts for Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crab monster Classic.
This sci-fi movie is in black & white which adds to the forbidding mood of the plot. The cast of characters in this movie do a creditable job of heighting the suspense. While the notion of giant land crabs plotting the overthrow of humanity is a bit far fetched. The premise that these giant mutant crabs can gain knowledge by eating the brains of scientists and blowing up the Island bit by bit with stolen explosives thereby cornering the remaining survivors is entertaining. This movie is fun to watch, you'll get a kick out of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Intense occult wonder
This is no aberration in Romero's career, but a directorial highlight that puts his other work into question.Jan White is perfectly cast, just absolutely mesmerizing. The visual style couldn't be more appropriate to that period, the acting is superb, and the content is consistently dark, challenging, intelligent and perceptive. You don't have to be a feminist to think her husband's death is poetic.Nor do I see her shifting sense of reality and fantasy as something culminating in tragedy. Her derangement is complex and nuanced, a gift from the gods that doesn't destroy her as feared. It's a shocking mistake that empowers her--forces beyond her control that knew best, apparently. She emerges unscathed, energized, sexually aware, redefined, and several dimensions deeper.Apparently 'Season of the Witch' is a later 104 minute cut of 'Hungry Wives,' once running at 130 minutes, later trimmed to 89.I really don't care--I'll take it anyway I can get it.This is an intellectual and radical film, going in directions I never would have expected.Even better, this edition is loaded with extras.Awesome.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anchor Bay gets lazy
Generally, I enjoy Anchor Bay's dvd releases. They seem to actually put effort in their dvds in comparison to most major studio releases. However, with "Season of the Witch" it seems as if they just wanted to make a quick buck and release this during the fall season. The transfer was virtually the same as the VHS version of the film I saw.I only recommend this dvd to those that truly need to see the film now and are not willing to wait for a new version to come out(if it does).

5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding there's always vanilla
I haven't seen Season of the Witch or this DVD version of There's always Vanilla. I do have a VHS of TAV and it's one of my favorite movies. It's hard to say why I like it but it is a very interesting experience. No other movie I've seen sums up the late 60s early 70s like TAV. The bad picture quality really adds to the feeling of the times and its like opening up a time capsule. The story line is a very real example of what the sexual revolution did to people's relationships. Free sex, abortions, illegitimate children, it's all here. I actually empathize with the characters. The main character seems unable to decide what he wants to do with his life and is afraid to commit to anything. I feel sorry for our female lead who sort of gets used by the guy. Ultimately this is a story that is very common both yesterday and today, but the existentialist philosophy of the 60s/70s adds to the drama.

3-0 out of 5 stars Joan Crawford Analyzes the Missing Link; Plus Cutie Kim Braden
This 1970 British flick mingles elements of "Planet of the Apes," "Frankenstein" and various Sasquatch tales: The scenes where Joan studies Trog are like a flipped around version of the scenes in "Planet of the Apes" where the female doctor chimp analyzes Charlton Heston. "Frankenstein" comes to mind because of the fairly sympathetic portrayal of the half-man/half-ape and his gentle treatment of a little girl.

A quirky and sneakily funny delight from the mid-'70s, this oddball comedy stars Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston as a pair of modern cattle rustlers who have targeted a local rancher--and then steal his herd one cow at a time. The rancher (Clifton James) can't figure out who's stealing his cows, so he hires an elderly detective (Slim Pickens) to solve the mystery. Directed by Frank Perry from a deliciously dry script by Thomas McGuane, the film offers a startlingly varied cast that includes Elizabeth Ashley, Harry Dean Stanton, and Richard Bright, with an engaging soundtrack by Jimmy Buffett (who also shows up in the film). Rancho Deluxe (1975) is one of those films I had sitting on my Amazon wish list for quite some time before I got around to purchasing it, which I did, around November of 2005...then it proceeded to sit on my shelf for a good six months before I got around to watching it, which I did, last night...there just never seemed any urgency in purchasing or watching the film, but I'm glad I did, on both counts.Written by Thomas McGuane (92 in the Shade, Tom Horn) and directed by Frank Perry (David and Lisa, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Mommie Dearest), the film stars Jeff Bridges (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Tron, The Big Lebowski) and Sam Waterston (The Great Gatsby, Heaven's Gate, The Killing Fields) back before he became a fixture on the television series "Law & Order".Also appearing is Slim Pickens (One-Eyed Jacks, Dr. Strangelove), Clifton James (David and Lisa, Cool Hand Luke), Elizabeth Ashley (Vampire's Kiss), Charlene Dallas (The Great Bank Hoax), Harry Dean Stanton (Kelly's Heroes, Alien), Richard `Al Neri' Bright (The Godfather), Patti D'Arbanville (Time After Time), Bert Conway (Little Big Man), and Joe Spinell (The Godfather: Part II, Rocky, Maniac) in a small, but memorable bit part.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't respect anyone who doesn't like this film!
1. It's incredibly well written and very, very funny (Tom McGuane scripts); 2. It's got some of the best ensemble acting and best one-liners of its time; 3. Warren Oates is playing harmonica in Jimmy Buffett's band at The Wrangler bar; 5. A "Pong" machine is featured in the story; 6. Wonderfully photographed by William Fraker who really shows off the Livingston area of Montana's Big Sky; 7. Only film to feature breakfast and bathing at Chico Hot Springs. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I suppose I'm lucky I hadn't read this in book form prior to seeing it on HBO in the 70's. My daughter and I must have watched it 10 times. It is crazy-fun, whacky, so silly and charming, yet dark - Clockwork Orangeish mixed with Dr. Strangelove but not. Michael Moorcock is one of my favorite sci fi authors and this film (though I gather he hates) really captures how funny he is in the most unexpected of ways. If you love the odd, get it.

3-0 out of 5 stars ADVDZONELSD
Wow ! Look at these colours : green, blue, yellow all over the screen. And look at Mrs. Brunner's hair : deep red. We're in the beginning of the 70's for sure. With a zest of English humour, a little sex (we know now that Jenny Runacre and Sandy Ratcliffe are real red-headed women), with interesting guest stars as Patrick Magee, Sterling Hayden or Harry Andrews and a little gore (after all, director Robert FUEST was responsible for the Dr. Phibes movies), THE FINAL PROGRAMME, also known as "The Last Days of Man on Earth", is a curiosity that deserves at least a rental.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lightfun
It's better than nothing and it does give hints of the novel. It's mostly fun. I can't help feeling, however, that Moorcock deserved better. The cast too. Jon Finch, who plays Jerry, was an excellent Macbeth in Polanski's Macbeth. Jenny Runacre, who plays Miss Brunner, has ample presence.

3-0 out of 5 stars An original and intriguing film weighed down by a too often illogical plot
I had been dancing around this French film (with subtitles) for several months, unsure how I would react to it, but I finally took the plunge and booked my passage to The City of Lost Children (La Cité des enfants perdus). Now I could sit here and ooh and aah all over the place about how beautiful and original this film is, but I have to give it to you straight: the story is almost completely illogical. This is one of your "most of what I learned about the film came from reading the plot summary" kind of movie. It's fascinating in its dark, fantastical way, of course, but I would really have liked to have a plot I could follow. The setting is unworldly - it's like they put Tim Burton, a couple of anime directors, Charles Dickens, and scores of German expressionists in a locked room and forced them to collaborate on the design of this world.Fortunately, the film does have one saving grace - young Judith Vittet. Not only does she turn in a masterful performance, she's the only buoy of sanity I could find in this ocean of craziness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Some Images Made Me Gasp, but as to the Plot...Sheesh
This film looks just amazing, but the plot is a jumbled mess of ideas borrowed from other movies and stories and it does not follow through on its own premises. But was there ever a more hideous, striking film image than the one of Daniel Emilfork straight on while dreaming his nightmares? Stunning closeups.
2-0 out of 5 stars b-o-r-i-n-g... but i guess i'm in the minority
I'll preface this by saying that i enjoyed Amelie, have seen my share of French film, admired & loved Dark City, and am not the least bit concerned with the supposed "pedophilism" that certain American conservative kooks apparently project onto the film. However, not long after the movie began i was already checking my watch, which is never a good sign.As visually interesting as the story was, i don't believe there are any interesting nor sympathetic characters. Each role is sorta thrown at the viewer without much rhyme or reason, and none end up as being particularly interesting.Sure, the sets are both blaring and mysterious, simultaneously evoking a mid-century cartoon and a noirish caper flick. The problem is that the story around the interesting visuals is... well... not very interesting.Realizing this is fantasy, i won't mention a dozen plot-holes large enough to sail a mine through, nor will I kvetch about the empty lack of any meaningful purpose for the goings-on that contribute to the lack of identifying with any of the characters.Even with all of the logic stripped out, this film still managed to bore me.Believe me, i wanted to like it, but it just wasn't happening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Lynch Shows on DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!
For anyone interested in this or David's other short lived show called ON THE AIR, you can find them on DVD at WWW.REVOK.COM. Enjoy! I hope I helped someone out!

5-0 out of 5 stars david lynch on cable tv
for those lynch completists out there( and i must be one of them), this is a must have & is extremely difficult to find. i had actually caught hotel room on HBO many a moon ago but it took me awhile to find this on vhs. god willing, one day i will own the dvd of this. trust me, you should already know whether or not you like the work of david lynch & should need little persuasiopn on my end if you do. hotel room is actualyl three vignettes which really have nothing to do with one another other than the mere fact thye all take place in the same creepy hotel. as with most lynch films, there is a strange & surreal atmosphere which crawls underneath your skin. you might pinch yourself every once in awhile just to make sure you haven't actually slipped into the world of lynchian madness. there is betrayal, murder, & madness here as you would expect to find but all stories will keep you guessing & scratching your heads as we've come to expect through classics. think blue velvet, twin peaks, or his last great masterpiece mulholland drive. if you didn't appreciate or understand those films, i seriously doubt you will have much use for or enjoy hotel room. the performances here are nearly stellar & my favorite vignette was the last one with crispin glover & the underrated actress alicia witt. the first & the second vignette(both directed by david himself) are bound to give you the chills or make you feel atleast a lil' uneasy after viewing. it's really a shame that lynch's work is not all readily available on dvd but what's sadder is the high prices we would have to pay for import copies or cheap bootlegs for alll those completists out there. contrary to most people's belief, you cna actually get eraserhead on dvd but you have to purchase it through the david lynch.com website for right now or settle for those cheap bootlegs on ebay which really suck. if hotel room never sees the light of day on dvd, perhaps HBO would bve so kind as to let us all see hotel room again sometime for those who can't find the vhs copy of this little known masterpiece. long live david lynch !!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lynch in Obscurity
Originally an HBO production with three unseemingly related stories that all take place in the same Hotel Room. I would not reccomend this film to just anyone, but to die-hard David Lynch fans, they might eat this up. Asmuch as I love Lynch's work, this one was tough to swallow. Although thestories themselves were intriguing, I cant say they went beyond that, nordid I see any connection between them. This film remains a strange onewithout the mystery and suspense of classic Lynch film. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If you take is seriously then you're totally missing the point!
A Low Down Dirty Shame is really no more than all the most familiar Cop movie clichs arranged in an order that makes a barely cohesive story. But it's all the fun and silly action that occurs in between that really matters! It's a bit like The Last Boy Scout from a spoof-blaxploitation angle.
5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT MOVIE
This movie is perfect. It has Comedy, action, drama, lots of shooting, I guess I would recomend this for all action lovers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very funny at times
Very funny action-comedy. There are some huge plot holes and sometimes the movie gets kinda silly but the movie was overall very entertaining. Very funny and energetic performance from Jada. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A CLASSIC
This is a classic flick in every way!It has some not so great acting, and a little cheesyness here & there, but all in all it has several scary moments. The funniest thing to me, tho, is at the opening, the zombie that attacks then chases Barbara is moving pretty quickly, then when it shows him arrive at the house later, he slowly turns to look at the other zombies, THEN he starts swaying and moving really slowly & stiffly! It's like he probably thought, "oh yea, I'm a zombie, I guess I better stiffen up!"Try to notice that the next time you watch this classic.I bet when this came out in 1968, it was considered horrible & shocking!

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is a Cult Classic!
The first zombie movie of its kind.George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" is an instant cult classic.A simple, peaceful countryside is being terrorized by killer zombies with only one thing on their minds- destroy all humans.A small stronghold of survivors must hold the zombies at bay outside an old, abandoned house for any future hope of humanity.Filled with spine-tingling, edge of your seat suspense, "Night of the Living Dead" is a masterpiece of thrills and horror that will leave you afraid to turn out the lights. This is an excellent film.If you're a fan of zombie movies this is the movie for you.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not easy to be alive when Venus is radiating life into death
A classic that will have many babies. The situation is simple and we all know it : a few normal people attacked by recently not yet buried corpses that have been revived in the brain. Living dead in a word. But this classic goes beyond this simple anecdote. It tries to explain - a sign that we are before the horror wave that will come soon - the phenomenon with some kind of radiation from Venus. But the main interest is the study of the reactions of people in front of such a situation. Fear of course. Self-protection and survival even if you have to kill your next door neighbor. Absolute egotism. Among them a black man who has some natural authority but who will have to kill all his fellow survivors because either they turn against him out of fear or they turn into living dead after having been killed in a way or another. The second interest is the organization society puts up to solve the crisis : a general posse that can kill (but how can we kill living dead who are already dead ?) at will and to the finish. And the finish will be to kill a live man because there is little difference between a living dead and a live man when both are on the other side, in front of your gunbarrel, and irony of irony, ..., but you have to see it. The moral of the story is that humanity is not very brilliant when it is confronted with a crisis in their own midst, coming from inside their ring.Read more

Editorial Review

If you're looking for a movie that shocked the filmgoing public with its outspoken take on race relations in corporate America circa 1969, look no further than this Robert Downey debut effort. Made on a shoestring in black and white, this film begins with a wonderful moment of racial discomfort. The board of directors at a Madison Avenue ad agency must elect a new chairman, and, in the maneuvering to make sure that enemies don't get votes, all the board members accidentally cast their ballot for the board's token black man, Putney Swope (Arnold Johnson). Swope immediately cleans house and transforms the agency into New York's hippest shop with a Black Power mentality and a willingness to tell previously unspoken truths in advertising. Though it looks dated today, it is a fascinating time capsule of the period and still contains its share of outrageous laughs. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Take some aspirin before you watch this movie...
and you might be able to sit through it.I love satire - reading it, writing it, hearing it, watching it - and this movie definitely has its moments. The commercials, in fact, are so spot-on and well done that it's hard to imagine what happened to the direction in the segments between. The acting is laughable; the camera work appalling (poor lighting, unsteady shots, and completely arbitrary/gimmicky framing); the "plot" rambling and mostly absent. This is one of those movies that some fans might claim you "don't get" if you don't like it, but having viewed it among people with a passionate interest in film and satire and an appreciation for eclectic comedy, I can say with certainty that we got it.It's just not a very good film.
1-0 out of 5 stars Anti Black Semitic Garbage
If you are into thinly guised minstrels, this Bud's for you. Posing as equal opportunity race bashing, thisfilm would be better if some effort were made to make it humorous. This garbage is so bad, that the lead character has his voice dubbed to sound even more ignorant. After 100+ years of Black bashing in film, you begin to wonder who is behind these sorry depictions of Black people in America. No wonder why R Downey Jr. turned out to be such a fine dopehead, trickle down guilt.

4-0 out of 5 stars An old friend....
That NEVER shows on television!! Not even cable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex and gluttony!
A small group composed by well definitepersonages, (linked by their Epicurean approach)each one of them representing a symbol of power and notorious status in the society - a judge, a chef, a pilot, a TV producer and a female school teacher join for a gastronomic weekend in a Parisian home. This great plentiful repast will be complemented by an unexpected guest: The Death' s Angel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Flatulence Fantasique!
You will never forget seeing this movie. Like another reviewer I have carried images from this film in my mind for decades. It's not that it's a great movie, there have been better "food" movies - but nothing that has the black humor and the joyful vulgarity of this one. Philippe Noiret's infantile Judge is a wonderful performance and the entire cast holds nothing back. Philippe Sarde's haunting theme is superb - especially in the death by flatulence scene. Funny, farcical and oddly thoughtful beneath the somewhat contrived artiness that is French filmmaking of the 1970's.

4-0 out of 5 stars There can be only one.
Some movies sear an image into your brain for ever. Like the end of "The Wild Bunch" or the beginning of Leone's "Once Upon A Time In The West" - "Looks like we're shy one horse". "No, you brought two too many".Read more
