5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Off Yet?
If you are delighted by the dazzling, relentless visual creativity of directors like Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, and David Cronenberg - then sit back and surrender to the magic of Tommy - director Ken Russell's finest hour.Ann-Margret's showcase performance leads the way for an all-star review including Arthur Brown (Fire!), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, and various incarnations of The Who, easily among the best rock bands of all time.(Elton John also appears, outperformed by his glasses.)
5-0 out of 5 stars WHO Fans are WAY Too Hard on this Fim!
If You look over the people who gave this Film a bad review, it's most likely from a "WHO" Fan and they're basing their review on what THEY wanted the Film to be or Think it should have been... they're comparing it to the Original Concept album from 1969, which I believe is Totally Unfair. It You were like Me, and saw this Movie without the prejudice of being a WHO Fan, than You would Judge the Film on it's Own Merits.I Think this is one of the Best Films I've ever Seen.I've watched it More times than I care to admit, because I see something different in it every signal time. That's just one of the things that makes this such a Great Film... it keeps You Thinking. If You're a WHO Fan, than go back and Listen to the 69 Version.. You KNOW that it was Purposely Left Open for Interpretation.... So give Ken Russell a Break.

2-0 out of 5 stars ken russell is the antichrist!
The main problem of this film is that it fell into the hands of Ken Russell, England's bad boy of cinema. He had a chance to make The Who's amazing rock opera into a visual treat--and totally let his penchant for garish imagry and bad taste ruin it!Perhaps if the project fell into the hands of a better director (Alan Parker, Stanley Kubrick, Norman Jewison, anyone!) then this would be a better film.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A flashy, mostly bad experience...
A lot of people seem to describe this as one of those movies that are "so bad, it's good."I cannot agree.
5-0 out of 5 stars My #1 favorite movie, EVAH!
There, I admitted it!And it feels good!
3-0 out of 5 stars Some parts good, most parts bad
The good: Jeff Lynne (ELO), Gene Kelly's performance at 68!, A few songs and dance numbers. The bad: poor writing, poor acting, sorry, but ONJ sings about every song to the point of irritation. Considering when it was made- disco dying, roller rinks popping up around the nation, neon special effects, Tina Turner's tiger girls (does anybody remember them?) and leg warmers, it's a wonder this movie is still in circulation. The story is weak, the screenplay is fragmented and comes off as plan stupid -sorry but it's pretty much covered in other reviews, it's like a rock in the dryer - the characters just bang along. It may be worth a watch if you're interested in seeing a time capsule view of the 70s-80s this movie has it all, including a Don Bluth animation piece with ONJ's character-as a bird- wearing leg warmers. There is a feel that this was slapped together with everyone adding a new idea at the last minute. Thank goodness Jeff Lynne wasn't having other artists changing his songs. If you do decide to watch it, you'll have to suffer through the ONJ/Beck scenes to get to some good songs and big dance scenes - this is the only movie I've ever seen where a contemporary band, the tubes, merge with a 40's big band and they don't miss a beat, btw, the 8 muses always looked great when they popped up. Sadly, this was Kelly's last dancing part, he probably deserved better but I'm sure it was better than Plan 9 from outer space, the musical. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Animator-director-screenwriter Ralph Bakshi audaciously tries to chronicle the history of 20th-century American popular music, while also placing each period into historical and social context--all in 97 minutes! Its animated, episodic narrative follows four generations of Jewish-American musicians as each painfully seeks fame through changing musical eras. Starting at the turn of the century with a piano-playing immigrant in New York, the film moves swiftly, following his offspring through such movements as Gershwin-era pop, jazz, folk music, '60s psychedelia, and punk--and only pauses for elaborate, energized musical numbers designed to showcase the work of Benny Goodman, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Lou Reed, the Jefferson Airplane, and numerous others. However, these electric set pieces provide brief dynamism in a relatively bleak film filled with hard-luck protagonists suffering through clichéd drug addiction, death, and alienation. While the film's scope is admirably ambitious, and Bakshi's stylized use of rotoscoping (tracing animation from live action) makes for fluid and often eye-popping visuals, his treatment also feels heavy handed and cuts numerous corners. And, when Baskshi ends his epic by mocking punk, and celebrating the future of rock & roll through the music of Bob Seger, one wonders whether or not he a knowledgeable grasp of his topic at all. The DVD version presents the film in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars American Pop
This is a great accomplishment in animation and used to be a rare film to find in print.I'm glad to add it to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best and most underrated rock n roll dvds!
I have seen so many rock magazines out there with its best rock movies list or reviews and for reasons I will never know,American Pop is rarely mentioned. Hello!!! Wake up critics! This is one of the best out there! It is the masterpiece from the artist who brought you The Lord of the rings and Fritz the cat. This is the story of 4 generations of young men trying to make it in the music industry. Taking place in New York during the early 1900's and ending in the late 1970's,each of the first 3 generations don't succeed for one reason or another with the last generation getting his big break giving this classic its happy ending. From the days of Vaudeville to the big band era to the summer of love to the punk era, this movie has it all. But to me,it is not just a rock n roll movie,it is a history book on dvd as well with such historic moments as the mobsters era, both world wars, the beatnik movement, and the drug problems of America, just to name a few. With music from legendary big band, jazz, and rock n roll legends, this dvd is for all age levels, though there might be a scene or two not recommended for the very young music lovers. This dvd may not be around long enough due to slow sales and lack of advertising so I recommend you buy this legendary and underrated animated rock dvd a.s.a.p.! Rock on!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "It's just a jump to the left...,"
It was a cold and rainy night Brad and Janet, had a flat and needed to find shelter and a phone. There was a light. Unknown to them was the particular caste was a meeting place of a unique other worldly crowd. Soon they will have realized their mistake; but will it bee too late?
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but only in the right context
Many people who see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" do so in a large-group, interactive setting (e.g., theaters at midnight, filled with hundreds of devotees, re-enacting or mimicking, karaoke-style, what's up on the screen). I've never done that, and it's just not something I'd be interested in doing. Whenever I've seen this film, it's been at home, either on network television or videotape, and not during a "Rocky Horror" party. In that setting, this movie is silly, bizarre, and moderately amusing, like a lesser Monty Python film. However, if you are thinking of buying a movie like this, to watch at home and not in a party setting, I'd recommend "Young Frankenstein" or "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", both of which are funnier and more memorable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 15th Anniversary
I recently found a used copy of the 15th Anniversary VHS of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.I must say that I absolutely love it.The prologue and music video are very interesting and entertaining. As for the film itself, well, it's a classic. No video collection can be without this film. The 25th Anniversary two-disc DVD is, without a doubt, the best DVD I have ever seen. The quality of it and the features on it are amazing."Don't dream it, be it." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who noticed....?
I loved this when it first came out. Watched every year for the next 2-3 years (hey, I was a tween, lol). Then, as an adult, I got nostalgic, and found it in Tower Records. I thought, hey, why not? Yeah, it'd probably be cheesy, but that's half the fun, right? Well, yeah, it was cheesy, but it was still fun, until my favorite Beatles song came on, "When I'm 64". Now, when I watched it originally, I was caught up in the plight of poor Strawberry, running from that silly pervert, Mr. Mustard. It came to that part, and it was just as funny as it was back then. But, then, wham!! Halfway thru the song, they cut it out and went right into the next scene!! I thought, hey, this is a commercial DVD, what the?? It was like, someone had actually video taped it, and stopped it for the commercial too soon!!

Editorial Review

"You know," she says at the outset, looking straight into the camera," I have one of those hard to believe faces." Whether she's playing herself or any number of other outspoken characters in the film version of her Off-Broadway show, Sandra Bernhard's hard to believe face remains the one constant. First, she's a jazz vocalist, then a stand-up comedian, then a soul singer. Yet she is always Sandra--even if the MC repeatedly introduces her as Sarah--and the stories she tells come mostly from her own life. Other riffs concern such image-obsessed celebrities as Barbra Streisand and Andy Warhol. The musical performances and monologues take place in front of a black nightclub audience that feigns boredom the entire time. Songs include "Me and Mrs. Jones," "Little Red Corvette," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with John Doe in full-on "Rhinestone Cowboy" regalia. The stage bits are intercut with commentary about Bernhard from her manager (Lu Leonard) and actor Steve Antin (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing So Hard We Couldn't Breathe!
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out.My best friend and I went to an arthouse movie theatre in New York City.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I have been a Sandra Bernhard fan for a long long time and this is a great DVD. There's a few celebrity mentions, but mostly they are just funny stories, and outrageous performances. I can watch it over and over and laugh every time. She is a one of the best! I loved her "sermon" on feeling the funk. Overall a very entertaining DVD! Lots of dark humor!

2-0 out of 5 stars Odd Duck
This movie is an odd duck.If you watched it in 1990 when it came out then you'd probably think it was funny (like I did) but after buying it in 2006 and watching it again - I could barely sit through it!Sandra's humor is very "New York" and in some ways very sophisticated so if you don't know the name of designer furniture and clothing many of her jokes will go over your head as could many of the jewish and ethnic jokes. If you're into that type of humor then you might find it hysterical. It's a musical in case you didn't know but some of the songs are VERY SLOW (and, um, sorry to say... boring.) At the end of the movie she does strip down to a stars & stripes bikini and dances away to Prince (formerly known as) - which could be worth the price of admission for some. ... Read more

My friend asked me if this movie was good. I replied, "It's funny and the music is good". But I didn't say the actual FILM was good. The acting is so-so, even by a young Susan Sarandon! It really doesn't have much of a plot either. The music has a really good beat and this movie has it's funny moments. I think this movie's so popular because it mixes rock and roll, transvestites, and monsters. It's fun to watch, but really has no depth or meaning. It didn't win any awards, nor was it nominated. But it's just pure fun. Give it a chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice!
Let me ask this question- do you consider yourself to be normal?Conventional?Conformist? If so, unless you're on drugs, you probably won't like this. But if you aren't any of these things, you'll love this movie! It lets out the wild side of you, lets you open up your mind to a world that you might not have known exists. It's probably especially fun to see live- I still haven't had the chance- but if you're like me and you can't get to it live, the tape works just as well.Watch it to have a fun time, and if you're watching it with friends, you'll have a greater time! ...

It's a musical in case you didn't know but some of the songs are VERY SLOW (and, um, sorry to say... boring.) At the end of the movie she does strip down to a stars & stripes bikini and dances away to Prince (formerly known as) - which could be worth the price of admission for some. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful
This is just awful. And I mean spine-tingingly bad. The songs are so terrible and so insistent that it makes you feel like kicking the TV in. The idea of the film is certainly interesting....certainly if it weren't played out as a musical. But it is and you can just see some of the actors baffled as to the sheer stupidity of what their doing. Some such as Tim Curry revel in the sheer nonsense this film provides. But seriously, those songs are beyond awful. My hatred for them rivals having to listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and that's intense. But Kate Bush has made some great songs so that's OK. This however, is the movie equivalent of getting an axe through your spinal cord. How it's achieved cult status is something that will have to go down on the peculiar habits of humans.
5-0 out of 5 stars aaaaaaaaaaaa I likey:-))))))))))
This is the perfect celebration of B- and horror-movies of the 30s and 40s...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
A classic! A Must See! Although not really intended for kids my daughter at 4 used to love the music and dance along...now at 14 she still loves the songs but she thinks the movie is kinda corny. Us adults however, love the movie and of course the soundtrack too. Can't help but catch yourself singing along. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the music but 1 for the movie
I've had the soundtrack to this movie for years, the double album no less.It is an absolute masterpiece. The movie is a bit of a let down after finally seeing it.If you think of this movie as a series of interconnecting vignettes it works much better as the plot is very convoluted and meandering.3-0 out of 5 stars The first music video musical
Julien Temple had lots of experience making music video's before he made this film, and it shows. Basically, it is many music video's strung together to formulate a film, which is not such a good idea. The story needed much more dialogue and character definition. You'll watch the film and think it looks really neat, but you won't care for the characters. A few months after this film was released, Spike Lee had a hit with something called "Do the right thing". Spike's film is almost a copy of this, same plotline, same issues, but no music. Both films cover a hot summer heatwave where peoples tempers are on edge, race riots occur, etc etc. Why Spike got more attention, I'm not quite sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Film
There's a movie musical somewhere in David Bowie's talent, but I'm not sure this is it.Don't be deceived by the cover, David's only a minor bit in this.Read more
