Editorial Review

Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's inhis early 20s, has a cool car, splendid '70s hair, leather jacket, playsguitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, inparticular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to goastray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend afuneral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; inthe course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into theback of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe hislittle brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severedfinger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until thesequel-ripe twist ending.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a horror classic
I think that Phantasm was a big surprise hit back in '79 for different reasons than why it has endured as a cult movie to this day.
5-0 out of 5 stars TALL MAN CLEANIN' HOUSE!!!!!
Classic, 'nuff said (Thanks, Stan Lee)!
5-0 out of 5 stars DRIPS WITH SURREALISM AND ATMOSPHERE
Phasntasm, a little-known (outside of fans) horror fasntasy from 1979 is, simply stated, one of the most effective, atmospheric and genuinely scary movies to come out in a long long time.Even after 27 years, it still holds up as a truly unsettling and thoughtful horror movie and, believe me, it WILL scare the bejesus out of you.The thing I remember most about Phantasm was the normal, suburban culdesac surroundings where the film takes place.I swear, it will remind you of the neighborhood you grew up in.If you thought Spielberg's Americana neighborhoods seem real, wait til you check out the settings here. The fact that the 2 boys live alone in this big Brady Bunch-type house makes the whole thing kind of dreamlike.(Their parents died recently with little explanation). The acting is spot-on.The guy that plays the little brother is completely realistic. You will swear you know this kid!Likewise his cool brother and Reggie the ice cream man. These 3 genuinely seem like they have been friends for years. The acting seems very spontaneous and natural. You totally buy into these characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars yup, you know the movie by heart (even if you've never seen it)
Friday the 13th is probably the main reason we have so many horror flicks today. It's not really that scary watching the very first one 26 years later, but you have to understand the influence, and realize that back in the day the movie was truly something phenomenal in the world of horror movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs Voorhes : the best maniac killer ever............
The first time i saw "friday the 13th" was at the age of 15 years old and i remember that that film liked me a lot! This film was the reason that i began watching horror films. Anyway "Friday the 13th" is my best film ever and in my top 10 of the bests films took the 1st place! The other 9 places are : "Halloween", "Jaws" , "the shining" , "misery" , "The texas chainsaw massacre", "sleepaway camp" , "the howling", "psycho" and "zero boys" from Nikos Mastorakis!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ghost train of a movie
Fair enough this movie is now 26 years old, but I have no idea how it could of spawned so many sequels to be perfectly honest. I watched this for the very first time last week and I was painfully disapointed because I love a good old horror flick. You dont really get to see alot of gore in this movie, everyone just mysteriously vanishes and then turns up dead in a "ghost train" type manner, the type of ghost train that's in the lamest amusement park one could imagine. By ghost train I mean, dead bodies just pop out from nowhere in the most random of fashions. *Spoiler to follow* One problem I had is that the Mother was incapable of taking down a small fumbling blonde girl towards the end but had no problem killing the larger males of the group. The arrow thru the eye was a cool touch, but it would of been good to actually see it!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not THAT scary but it was enjoyable
Awhile ago I was having a conversation with someone about musical tastes where we vastly disagreed on what was simply awesome bands and which ones were purely based around taste, such as people who love R&B and Rap to people who prefer Dance. In a way, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as the Exorcist and the Shining are like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin of horror movies: you must love them and say anything different and you're going to get lynched. So I will agree that the film is definately refreshing considering the latest crop of so-called "horror movies", yet at the same time I wonder why it didn't hit me that much.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
PLOT: Five friends (Pam, Kirk, Sally, Franklin, and Jerry) are travelling across the open, isolated roads of Southern Texas, checking on a family grave in light of recent graverobbing in the area. The good news is, the grave is unharmed. The bad news is, the kids are tortured and slaughtered by a group of inbred hicks who dwell withing the woods.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Funny
When I watch MST3K, I'm always struck by how much I would rather be watching ANY of the movies it ridicules, than watching it ridicule them. There's nothing I find more pathetic than people (generally those incapable of creating any significant works of their own) sneering at the creations of others... often simply because those creations are perhaps not of the first rank in some technical way. Green Slime, despite the jeers of the jaded, is really a decent movie on its own terms, that displays a courage that rises far above its obviously limited budget, and which deserves a far more respectful reception. Sure, this is "merely" space opera... but space opera gleefully reduced to the archetypal essentials: the square-jawed hero, the beautiful (but capable) heroine, the melodramatic conflict between former buddies... and, of course, the hideous (and, yes, rubbery) green monster to stir it all up. Turn off your superior, hyper-critical faculties for a few minutes, and you'll find nothing here that isn't given great reverence in productions like Star Trek (especially TOS). Yes, the production values are on the "cheesy" side... but the film overcomes that trivial limitation by its sheer gusto. (Wonderfully exemplified by the effervescent title song.) This is a movie that isn't afraid to do what it does, and it's enormously enjoyable because of that. Don't be fooled into missing the fun by those who simply don't get it, and would rather scoff at something they don't understand. I give it a well-earned 3 stars: a fine effort in a genre that clearly won't appeal to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars "the green slime" is just what the doctor ordered for cheesey sci-fi fun
this is the story of a comit about to strike the earth. to save mankind the space force sends wax figure robert horton(star of t.v,'s wagon train, and looking just like a wax figure ,not one hair out of place and a face that looks like it would crack if he smiled to much) into space to gamma 3 space station to command a group to blow up the comit. of corse the station is commanded by old best friend now enemy richard jeckel. after they blow up the comit and get back to gamma 3 the monster of the title comes into play.
5-0 out of 5 stars green slime your time away
this movie isn't as bad as somepeople would have you belive!! Sure the effects are bad, sure the acting is "uggg", and sure the leading man looks like a wax figure, but if you let it this movie is a blast to watch. The theme song is priceless and worth the price alone. turn off your mind and let it "slime" you!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The true Devils
I saw this masterpiece when it first came out, 1971. I have not stoped thinking and talking about it since. The devil you think of are not the devils you will see. It will leave a mark on you. This is not a light film. You won't forget it. Expect a wide range of emotional reponses, widest range of any film I have seen with the possible exception being the Kind Of Hearts with Allan Bates.

5-0 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video"

1-0 out of 5 stars Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?
This is the soundtrack to "The Worst Film of All Time".The CD features the audio track to the entire movie on one disc.Music, dialogue, sound effects, etc.Yes, the sound to the whole darn movie. And it's all on one 70 minute track, which is very annoying. You can't skip ahead to various scenes if you want to.Aside from that, why would you want to just listen to the movie on your CD player, when you could watch it on your TV?It loses a great deal of it's effect without the visual aspect.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was in the theaters?
I picked up "Plan 9" purely for its reputed schlock value. Any movie described on its own cover as one of the 50 worst films of all time has to be worth a look!

3-0 out of 5 stars Joan Crawford Analyzes the Missing Link; Plus Cutie Kim Braden
This 1970 British flick mingles elements of "Planet of the Apes," "Frankenstein" and various Sasquatch tales: The scenes where Joan studies Trog are like a flipped around version of the scenes in "Planet of the Apes" where the female doctor chimp analyzes Charlton Heston. "Frankenstein" comes to mind because of the fairly sympathetic portrayal of the half-man/half-ape and his gentle treatment of a little girl.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful
This is just awful. And I mean spine-tingingly bad. The songs are so terrible and so insistent that it makes you feel like kicking the TV in. The idea of the film is certainly interesting....certainly if it weren't played out as a musical. But it is and you can just see some of the actors baffled as to the sheer stupidity of what their doing. Some such as Tim Curry revel in the sheer nonsense this film provides. But seriously, those songs are beyond awful. My hatred for them rivals having to listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and that's intense. But Kate Bush has made some great songs so that's OK. This however, is the movie equivalent of getting an axe through your spinal cord. How it's achieved cult status is something that will have to go down on the peculiar habits of humans.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Cult-Classic
Just what is it that makes a film a `cult-classic'? Why is it that a film such as "Frankenstein" can be declared a `classic,' while at the same time its, admittedly dissimilar, sequel "The Bride of Frankenstein" will forever be relegated to `cult-classic' status? The term `cult' suggests a limited but devoted fan base, but I believe that the term goes beyond this definition, if only for the reason that many cult-classics are decidedly more popular than several films decreed as classics (see Frankenstein example). Ultimately, the categorization of `cult-classic' is one of genre, dictating less the popularity of a film than certain aesthetic and narrative characteristics. Classic films are typically perceived as highly polished, rigidly acted studio affairs, whereas the cult film could be described as the slightly disturbed, often rough and unruly, step-sibling of the `classic' film. Cult-classics are usually strikingly amateur in quality, often poorly filmed on bad stock, hosting a cast of unknown actors, and driven by unusual plots and campy humour. It is often the amateurish quality of the film that is, whether intended or not, ultimately the appeal. Often the `cult-classic' is a film we enjoy at, rather than with, if you get my meaning.
5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC HORROR FILM!!
WHAT MAKES THIS FILM ORIGINAL IS THE CAST OF PERFROMERS WHICH STAR IN THE FILM! The story is quite simple and the cast is a cast of humans, all with disabilities! This movie, just like circus side-shows, were a way of making a living for these people!!

4-0 out of 5 stars SLAPSTICK HORROR: A FUN WATCH
For those who have never seen the film, it is a b-grade horror flick that deviates from many in the horror genre. First of all, it is not meant to be taken seriously, as Sam Raimi puts a lot of comical twists into this film. Also, while the film is listed as "EVIL DEAD II," it is in fact a remake and much better upgrade of the first "Evil Dead" film. There is a lot of gore in this film to be sure [b-grade style] however, there are plenty of gags and laughter also.
4-0 out of 5 stars Evil Dead Rocks

2-0 out of 5 stars Children, lend me your ears
"Children of the Corn" had some potential: a "corn" cult for children with a charismatic adolescent as its leader takes over a rural town in Nebraska. Based on a short story by Stephen King, this is a fairly interesting and unusual concept. Unfortunately, some very weak execution is what mars the movie. Its director, Fritz Kiersch, sometimes works as "Alan Smithee," the pseudonym for directors who don't want to attach their real names to movies they know are turkeys. This movie doesn't quite warrant that, though it isn't very good either. There is scarcely anything more pathetic than a movie that claims to be frightening, yet simply is not. Most egregious is the use of hokey, faux sacred music. Aside from Linda Hamilton, John Franklin and Robbie Kiger, the performances are pretty weak. It doesn't help that some of the dialogue is laughably bad and that some of the special effects are cheap and look awful. Isaac Chroner (Franklin) instructs the children of the town to murder all but one adult, who is apparently needed to warn potential visitors against entering the town. His advice nearly prevents Vicky and Burt Stanton from seeking medical help there, but darker forces prevail and the couple finds itself fending off attacks from the kids. If the excessively dramatic acting and cheesy effects at the climax do not make you laugh, the incredibly lame final scene certainly will. That is not to say this movie is all bad, however. Though never scary, there are a few effective moments throughout. (I don't want to reveal any of them because they would be the only reasons for watching the movie)Die hard horror fans might want to check out this 1984 release, though fans of good movies will probably want to steer clear. This Anchor Bay DVD is anamorphic widescreen with good picture and sound, though this is not the director's cut.

3-0 out of 5 stars "You're not going through the corn are you?"
I just bought this film around last Halloween. I'd never seen 1984's "Children Of The Corn," and as a lover of Old School horror, I was anxious to watch it. I've seen horror films much, much gorier than this, but you really don't need a lot of it to have yourself a good horror flick. Sometimes just the power of suggestion is enough to scare the heck out of you. This film shows you just the right amount of both and it is an enjoyable movie for the 80's horror fans. It may be a bit too tame for the hardcore horror fans, but it's a pretty good film based on Stephen King's novel.
1-0 out of 5 stars once again a king story is ruined on film
in the short story collection night shift, mr.king gave us some of his best short stories and spawned at least 6 movies that i know of(this mess, trucks( twice once by king as "maximam overdrive" and once as a t.v. movie),night surf, the boogyman(not the new one),graveyard shift, the mangler, and maybe more and not one has been done right! this one misses by a mile as it tells of the cult of kids who kill all the adults in a town and serve "he who walks behind the rows"

5-0 out of 5 stars Chilling and creepy!
Even by today's horror movie standards, this first black and white film version of H.G. Wells' "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" can be considered a worthy frightfest!Charles Laughton's portrayal of Dr. Moreau is devilishly evil and far superior to Burt Lancaster's in 1977 (that was a good version, though) and Marlon Brando's in 1996 (Oh, man, that version really sucked!).

4-0 out of 5 stars From The Mind Of David Cronenberg
Most people I know either like Cronenberg's film's, or vehemently detest his work. I fall in between. Some of his work I enjoy, others I really don't wish to watch again. This film, "Videodrome," is one I initially really liked when I first viewed it. Then, years later I really didn't care for it that much. Viewing it again a few years later I liked it. Maybe it's because what Cronenberg is showing the viewers in this film is a bit of a reflection of our times. When I see many of the films, and especially reality shows that are on the air, it reminds me of this film.
4-0 out of 5 stars Television is reality, and reality is less than television
They say you either love or hate this rather bizarre offering from 1983, but I found myself somewhat indifferent as Videodrome approached its conclusion. To my mind, the final third of the story is ultimately too haphazard, esoteric, and too consciously horror-driven to clearly express the themes worked into the heart of the film. It's easy to read a lot into this film, but that's as much of a credit to the viewer as it is to the filmmakers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Come to Nikkie......become the new flesh!
I would have to say that VIDEODROME is one of David Cronenbergs best movies ever made.Coming from a director that already has an amazing history of films under his best (THE FLY, SCANNERS, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) it's nothing short of amazing to add VIDEODROME to the already high brow collection.VIDEODROME in short is basically about this television producer (James Woods) who is looking for a new and interesting show to put on his already sleazy network.Soon he stumbles across a strange program called "Videodrome" that has no plot and not story. It's just basically women being whipped or beaten over and over again.Something about the show proves to be addictive and soon the television producer finds himself thrown into a world of psychotic sexuality and even more strange body transformation. Some of the plot details become lost near the end of the movie and when it's over, you might be a little confused or lost. Not to worry.VIDEODROME has enough dark and twisted hidden messages and amped up gore to make this an enjoyable, "smart" Horror film.Wonderful special effects, above average acting and well written story make VIDEODROME a must have for any Horror fans collection. ...
