5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Charlie Chan Entry
This Charlie Chan entry starring Sidney Toler has our favorite detective from Honolulu dealing with sabatoge and murder at a convention for detectives. Chan's enthusiastic offspring, Jimmy (Sen Yung), arrives in New York just in time to help pop. Chan's comment about young Jimmy's involvement in previous cases to a fellow detective is a scream!
4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Entry in the Chan Series
Charlie Chan films are frequently accused of pandering to racial stereotypes. There is a certain truth to this, but Charlie Chan and company were neither more nor less stereotypical than such other popular series as the "Blondie" or "Dr. Kildare" series, and--while we may occasionally roll our eyes at a few 1930s sensibilities--its stereotypes are never mean-spirited and Charlie (along with his various sons) is always presented in a positive light.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Movie
This is one of the best Charlie Chan movies. Though I found the beginning to be slightly confusing, it is a very compelling and interesting story. I would recommend this film to any Chan fan. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BAD MOVIE BUT DVD IS WORTH IT
Batman and robin is the most dissapointing of all.It reminded me of the TV series. JOEL SCHUMACHER makes Batman and Robin funny characters than dark and mysterioso. The DVD is worth it because it has the ultimate bounus features but,the movie sucks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than first with Micheal Keaton, but it would have great to see Jack instead of goofy Robin
Very good talent is somewhat wasted in here.
2-0 out of 5 stars Holy guano
(1.5/5 stars)I like George Clooney because he has many talents: he's a very good actor, a gifted director and an informed political activist. Being Batman is not one of these talents. However, that is but one of the many problems with this film. Even the gorgeous Elle Macpherson cannot generate enough interest to salvage it. Joel Schumacher continues with his irritating use of neon colors and increases the cornball humor, Arnold Schwarzenegger brings his action hero one-liner shtick to his role as Mr. Freeze and Bane looks like he is straight off the island of lost wrestlers. This film more resembles the campy 1960's TV series than it does Tim Burton's landmark 1989 film and the worst part is that this appears to be intentional. The writing is bad and the actors look as though they might begin to burst out laughing at any moment. The exception to this is Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, who is believable when braces Bruce for his departure. This is one of the highlights of the series and, as such, provides some redeeming value to this film. Unfortunately, that is almost the only one. I give another ½ star for the radiant Alicia Silverstone; even though her performance is less than stellar as Batgirl, seeing her in that costume is a wonder. Too bad she didn't have a Batgirl movie of her own on the heels of this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating!!!!!!
Way ahead of its time.I wish I could see this on the stage as it was originally done. Anyone has an interest in the seedy underworld of prison life will love it. Brilliant!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must see for prison movie fans
I have only seen this movie once because it is hard to watch, but well worth watching.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
Interesting but significantly watered-down version of the claustrophobic, searing stage play concerning the sexual liaisons between young men in a juvenile prison. While the film is essentially explotative in tone, andcomes no where near depicting the brutality of the prison system, it raisesa number of legitimate issues and questions re homosexuality in prison andsexual role-playing in gay society. No laurels for the script, but theperformers are strong and the film itself well-made.Not wildly memorable, but worth a watch. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Say something once, why say it again?
This is one of those films that preys on the fears and emotions of its viewers, but does it rather well. It purposely contrives situations in order to gain our sympathies for the characters it wants. "Lethal Weapon 2" did this by having the evil South African government offical proclaim, "Diplomatic immunity!" after committing a heinous crime. In "Dirty Harry," the Scorpio Killer claims police brutality after receiving a well-deserved beating. Makes for a nice story and usually achieves its goal, though it simultaneously insults us as viewers. Nonetheless, I have a weakness for serial killer movies, especially when written well. This one is particularly memorable because it features Clint Eastwood in the title role, though Andy Robinson is at least as remarkable as the Scorpio Killer. Harry Callahan is dubbed "Dirty" because he refuses to play by the rules. He represents the biggest challenge to the killer, so the cat and mouse game ensues. Can Harry stop him before he kills again? Long a fantasy for upstanding citizens, this film is increasingly on its way toward becoming a reality (courtesy the NRA), due to laws permitting concealed handguns and to shoot now, ask questions later. Fed-up citizens with firearms are exactly what America needs to be great once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, violent, and shattering....and funny, too....
The film critic Pauline Kael referred to this film as a "fascist" film, implying that simply because a cop who was disgusted by idiotic paperwork and having to obey bureaucrats and politicians who understand nothing about the world we live in decided to take an unconventional approach to fighting crime.Believe me, liberals like police, too. They're not going to care about certain people's rights when it comes to having a safe neighborhood. But then on the flip side, conservatives have never really liked civil liberties, unless they're arrested, then they want as many liberties as they can get.I personally hate when people with political axes to grind drag a film into their idiotic little world, because they're out to prove their point, and they'll distort the meaning of the film. It'll leave a bad taste in your mouth after you've seen it, because you've heard the verbose intellectuals talk and talk and talk and talk about it ad nauseum. This is a great film, one of Clint's best and the best film in the Dirty Harry series. It's intelligent, exciting, and funny as hell. It's politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing.Life is politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing also. There are many great setpieces, such as the opening bank robbery, the speech on why they call him Dirty Harry, the scene where they shoot Scorpio, and the final scene.A masterpiece....

5-0 out of 5 stars GO for it, Harry!
I'm awaiting my copy of "Dirty Harry" - then I'll have all five of the...well, "Dirty Harry" movies.Let the snivling liberals whine about "police brutality," "read him his rights," ad nauseum - you can just BET that there are a LOT MORE of us that condone everything Harry does and stands for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great crappy movie
this movie is far far far away from being a masterpiece, but i've loved it since i was a kid. the only problem is, it's almost impossible to find, anywhere. they really need a dvd version!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Stewart fans, suspensful, but not outstanding.
Masterminds is a hostage suspense story similar to Toy Soldiers. In this case Patrick Stewart is the culprit, ostensibly setting up security for a private grade school.Vincent Kartheiser is a teenage computer wiz who dropped off his little sister at the school, then stayed behind to pull a prank with the school's new computer system, getting trapped inside - hidden. There's plenty of action & suspense, but the plot's slightly confusing - it's not clear what Stewart's team is really up to, and some of it seems far-fetched even for this type of movie. In other words, it will keep you interested, but is hard to follow.Fans of Patrick Stewart probably won't be disappointed, except for the fact he's the bad guy.Brenda Fricker is good as the principal, the rest of the cast competent but not outstanding.

2-0 out of 5 stars UGGH
I might say that it was not that a great movie, nor even a good movie at that. First we have antagonists who are most likely mercks, but lack the skills to prove that they are. Even their leader, considering his role, is not appropriate to be a British SAS. Also, they are very "soft", to consider that they are equipped with dartguns. I got irritated also that there were many times that the protagonist will surely be caught but the criminals were so stupid. The film also lacks of realism, not much crowds outside the gate, considering that these are children held hostages. Mines exploding very near policemen, but they were not much affected by the blasts, etc. Well I need not go on. For me, don't waste your money buying this movie. If you want, just rent it. ... Editorial Review

Richard Donner's 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane--played by Margot Kidder--through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman's sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Superman Myth
The Donner/Puzo version of Superman is a tough nut to crack. On the one hand, it revitalized a pulp action character that had been floundering for some time, by a big budget and some highly competent film-making. On the other hand, it did so by giving him a gravitas that could best be described as undeserved. During the mid-70s, comic book writer Elliot Maggin slowly formed Superman into a kind of sci-fi, cosmic Christ figure, with all sorts of "salvific" undertones. When Mario Puzo was assigned to write the script to Superman: The Movie, he talked at length with Maggin and apparently got many of his ideas from the comic writer--including, we can surmise, the messianic ideas that appear in this film. In many ways, this was a stroke of brilliance. The frequent occurrence of Superman "saving" people from dangerous situations was merged with a Christic atmosphere to produce one of the most popular superhero movies of all time.
5-0 out of 5 stars superman forever
this is the verson that the so called x-men producer brain singer or director whatever tried to remake. this verson tells the story of superman coming to earth and growing up in smallville in this verson the lex luthor villian works great in the new movie it does not. superman needs super villians in the first movie he does not fight super villians in the next movie he fights not one but three super powered villians.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Violent But Entertaining Film!
This is a film for required tastes only. It will probably not appeal to the vast audience out there. First of all, the film is very violent. And when I say violent, well, I think half the towns Antonio Banderas visited in the film were depleted of the entire male population. However, it's also very funny at the same time. Not comedy funny, but dark-comedy. A guitar playing, gun wielding Mariachi player on the hunt for the man who wronged him is not a film you see everyday. OK, I know the film is bloody and violent, but that is the nature of this film. I found it entertaining and amusing at the same time. Especially the character of Steve Buscemi: the sometime confidant and messenger to Antonio Banderas.

Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A LACKLUSTER BEGINNING TO THE "BATMAN" SERIES!
After seeing the Man of Steel finally fall in 1987's box-office flop "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," Warner Bros. turned their attentions to DC Comics' other popular superhero: the Dark Knight. Two years after "Superman IV," "Batman" leapt to the big screen, with Tim Burton at the helm.
5-0 out of 5 stars ". . . what I say to my victims before I kill them.Ilike the sound of it . . ."
Jack Nicholson's Joker is a performance for the ages - and one to which perhaps more of us should take heed.Egoistic misanthropy and callous disregard for life have exponentially exploded among our species since the great actor's wild parody of the sins of the "Me Generation".To me, the speeches of our nation's political and corporate leaders at times hauntingly echo Nicholson's Joker's now classic harangues - and private corporate armies? Is there really much difference between Blackwater and the "Joker's men"?
5-0 out of 5 stars Still cool
(4.5/5 stars)Exceptional envisioning of the Batman comic book by Tim Burton. Michael Keaton brings an understated disaffection in the role of the billionaire with a disturbed soul and dual personality. Contrast this with the unbridled mania of the character in "Batman Begins;" both are equally effective, though one style over the other will likely appeal to you. Is there any topping Jack Nicholson in his role as Jack Napier / The Joker? Only he can pull off such an exaggerated performance and have it be so fun without ruining a movie. Even though his role is suitably funny, there is a little too much humor overall in the movie. Robert Wuhl's character is especially unnecessarily comical. Also, while Danny Elfman's score is duly heroic and compelling, the music by Prince just doesn't mesh well and is probably not the best choice. Nonetheless, the visuals are stunning, the action is taut and the film vastly entertaining. It is a testament to the film's influence that numerous comic book movies have subsequently used Danny Elman scores (including rival Marvel's "Spider-Man") and molded black rubber suits, though this film also owes much to 1978's "Superman" with its realistic approach and A-list villains. Great stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive movie sequel.
That the sequel was made at all was no certainty although the original left an obvious opportunity to chart the conclusion to Doyles mission in bringing Frog One (Fernando Rey) to justice.
2-0 out of 5 stars NOW, THIS IS WHERE MORE ACTION COULD'VE DEFINITELY HELPED
POPEYE DOYLE [GENE HACKMAN] IS BACK ONCE AGAIN IN AN ATTEMPT TO CATCH A DRUG RUNNER IN FRANCE, SINCE HE FAILED TO CATCH HIM BEFORE IN NEW YORK. SUB-PAR STORY AND WHERE THE SLOW PACE AND THE BUILDING TO THE FINALE ACTUALLY HELPED THE ORIGINAL, IT NEARLY RUINS THE SEQUEL! OF COURSE, THE FIRST FILM DIDN'T REALLY HAVE TOO MUCH ACTION, BUT, I BELIEVE THAT IF THIS SEQUEL HAD MORE ACTION, THIS COULD'VE BEEN SAVED FROM BEING MEDIOCRE. ONLY THING BENEFITTING THIS ONE IS GENE HACKMAN. OTHER THAN HIM, THERE'S REALLY NOT TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING TO SEE IN THIS SEQUEL TO THE ALL-TIME CLASSIC ORIGINAL. STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL FOR MUCH BETTER RESULTS.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best That Could Be Matched With the Original
Considering the enigmatic ending of the Oscar-winning "The French Connection," a sequel seemed obligatory. But four years later, it's likely that no one was expecting the harrowing twist that came with the follow-up's plot.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I like it, yet it's very overrated
Well let me start by saying that I liked El Mariachi, It had a good likeable cast (Carlos Gallardo was good as El Mariachi), good script, and it knows how to keep the viewer interested. Like Roger Ebert once said, "A good movie doesn't rely on how much money is spent on it" and I totally agree with that. So many would say that El Mariachi is the total package right? Wrong! As a John Woo and Quentin Tarantino lover I expected this to be somewhat more action packed and was left somewhat empty handed. It suprised me how so many people said the action was beautifully done, and I thought I was going to agree with them since I saw Desperado before this. Yet the action is a let down, heck the budget was so low in this movie we don't even see any type of bullets flying or even explosives going off in the actors chests. For the man who has been called the Hispanic John Woo I would think that his action sequences would be more stylized (I have seen really cheesy Mexican shoot-out movies that had an even lower budget yet managed to show better action sequences than this.) But I guess I realize that Robert Rodriguez intention wasn't to make a great action film rather to make a good movie. And a good movie it's. If you are an action fan that can accept this drawback, then go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Action Movie!
Even though this movie was made on 7,000 it is just as entertaining as these million dollar movies out there! This movie to me was more entertaining than Titanic ever could be! And the action sequences a great! Anyway if you are looking for a good action movie this is your movie!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Action
The first film by Robert Rodrguez, who went on to do Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, among other, if you can get past de spanish languaje it is still a great low budget action film, even comparable with some big time movies, the action scenes are some of the best, specialy because of budget contraints. 3-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't feeling this one baby.
If I had to describe `Sheba Baby,' the best I can come up with is Pam Grier Light with some really bad mellow drama. I really tried, but this movie just didn't work for me. The action scenes were dull, the acting was surprisingly poor, and some of these characters were TOO stereotypical to even be funny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pam Grier, Forever!
This is the first of Pam Grier's efforts that I would not lump wholly in the exploitation category.Sure, there's lots of gunplay and a redundant catfight. That said, the dialogue here avoids the tongue-and-cheek quality that was evident in "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown" and the villains here are more realistic and not as cartoonish. The underlying theme here are the underworld elements that threaten legitimate black entrepreneurs.Because the film deals with the threat more seriously the message becomes more potent.Even in this low-budget effort Grier just commands the screen like any of her contemporaries and would give a run for the money for today's top actresses. She was definitely ahead of her time.I can't recall if Halle Berry thanked her in her Oscar speech. She does not appear nude here but she looks so fabulous clothed that your imagination will do somersaults.Timeless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it just to see Pam in a wetsuit
This may not be Pam Grier's best film, but I give it high marks, because there's a long stretch towards the end of the film where we see her in a sexy blue beavertail wetsuit. She keeps the jacket unzipped about half way through most of it, so you can get a good, alluring view of her chest. Sure, she has a swimsuit on under the wetsuit, but I find that more interesting anyway. Lets one use one's imagination, I say. You can't ask for more than a beautiful woman in a beavertail wetsuit (and if you ARE asking for things like character development, fine acting, etc you're really looking in the wrong place). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Sucks.
Where to start? The villian Two Face is wasted in a characterization that has virtually NOTHING to do with the comic equivalent (he's not supposed to be colorful and over the top, cracking stupid one-liners--never has, never will be).Jim Carrey is irritatingly manic as the Riddler, almost as if he was trying to out-Joker Nicholson. But Carrey's role is one of the high points of the film!! (if they hadn't made him a stupid mad scientist and Carrey had taken it down just ONE notch, it could've been great). Kilmer is neither good nor bad as Batman/Bruce Wayne, he's just there (incidentally I remember reading somewhere that Kilmer's turn was called the best casting of Bruce Wayne ever seen on screen by Batman creator Bob Kane).
4-0 out of 5 stars Chicks dig the car
(3.5/5 stars)Val Kilmer gives it a go as the Dark Knight, this time with Joel Schumacher at the helm. Both of those decisions turn out to be poor, with Kilmer seriously miscast and Schumacher bringing corny humor and neon lights to the party. "It's the car, right? Chicks dig the car." Come on, neither Bruce Wayne nor Batman would utter these inane lines! And what is the deal with Schumacher's obsession with Batman's body parts (nipples, butt, etc.)?! No! No! No! There are some good aspects of the movie, however, especially the roots of Robin's origin and Jim Carrey's energetic performance as the Riddler. Neon aside, the film features some decent visuals and action. Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore are always pleasant to watch, though this is worth watching for Jom Carrey's performance alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Movie in Batman Series
This Movie is tied with begins as best in the series! Jim Carrey makes an excellent Joker, and the Batman Robin tandum is played out to perfection. It is also more true to the actual story than Batman Begins. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!," "Thud!," and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm), the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith), and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HOLY CHEESE, BATMAN!
Whoever thought of making a spoof of the Darkknight character was absolutely brilliant. I mean, you gotta admit, Bruce Wayne takes himself just a little too seriously, don'tcha think. Okay, yeah, his parents were murdered right in front of his eyes at such a young age and I guess that could make anyone go a little batty. However, this is not even discussed in the Adam West portrayal of the caped crusader. He's just some guy in a bat costume who has a young "friend" who also likes to wear tights and a cape. The two of them go around Gotham City fighting the crazies that are in and out of Arkham Asylum on a rotating basis. "Thank God you caught the Penguin, Batman, but, uhhh...we're gonna release the Riddler now so you have somethin' to do..."
4-0 out of 5 stars looks a bit dated, but still an unpretentious & fun classic
Comic books, including Batman titles, are NOT literature and are meant for CHILDREN and not adults. What I love about this movie and the old 60s TV series is that it is intentionally designed to be a fun ride for Saturday morning television. When the comic book culture in North America started in recent decades to become "serious", pretentious and filled with the type of moral ambiguity that one normally finds in adult fiction, comic book aficionados (being mostly overgrown children in their 20s and 30s with too much disposable income) started lambasting this fun and goofy classic as an insult to Batman and comic books in general. In effect, they are criticizing the main essence and purpose of comic books (FUN AND DISTRACTION) in order to defend their misguided understanding of comic books as serious drama, if not high literature itself. For the rest of humanity, who are more socially mature than these pathetic hardcore comic book readers, this camp classic will bring out the innocent laughter and fun that all comic books should have. However, like classic Star Trek and Star Wars: A New Hope, the look of this Batman movie has not aged too well and marks it clearly at an earlier era when good guys still wore bright colours and spouted moral lessons for the children watching the show.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Catwoman
I guess it all started with the Selina Kyle comic book character, and on to Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt in the TV series. I think Lee Meriwether is #1. She's incredibly sleek and sexy in black lurex, plus a Miss USA. ... Read more

They stole his money, turned his woman against him, and left him for dead. Now tough-guy poster child Porter (the appropriately world-weary Mel Gibson) is back, bad to the bone, and a mite ticked off at the Organization that done him wrong. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding In The Film Noir Genre!
It's not usual, or everyday, that one roots for the bad guy. This film is different however. I don't think any other actor could have pulled this film off, other than Mel Gibson in the role of Porter. Come to think of it, this is the only Mel Gibson film I own. But it's a great one. Before I digress any further, I have to explain my opening remark. Porter (Mel Gibson) is not a good guy. However, he is in the company of characters that are even more rotten than he is. For instance, he is a criminal too: Let's not forget that. However, the old adage 'Honor among thieves' seems to be a motto that Porter lives by. Especially when it is his wife and friend who nearly kill him and take off with the 70 thousand dollars of his hard earned income: Earned by robbing other criminals no less. 70 thousand dollars does not seem like a lot considering what Porter is about to do. But we'll get back to that in a moment.
