5-0 out of 5 stars JONES BRINGS THIS KELTON WESTERN TO LIFE
Tommy Lee Jones brings the Elmer Kelton western classic to life with THE GOOD OLD BOYS. Like Monte Walsh, the story follows a tried and true cowboy's nostalgic efforts to hold on to the only life he knows. Even being roped down in order to help his brother keep his homestead and an appealing lady friend aren't enough to make Huey Calloway (Jones) settle down.

The screenplay as written by Mr. Jones must have been easy since it follows the book so closely. My wife and I just watched the VHS a moment ago and really enjoyed it, especially that it was so true to the book.I also wish that Mr. Kelton had been given more credit than he was but that didn't change our enjoyment of the film.Hope more of Kelton's books will be filmed! ... Editorial Review

Delmer Daves's movie about ex–army scout Tom Jeffords's one-man peace mission to the Apaches, and the diplomatic partnership he formed with Cochise, has a child's-storybook clarity to it. That applies to not only its lovely Technicolor compositions but also its scenario, characterizations, and still-arresting mix of violence and delicacy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie with a Message for Today
Wonderful stars - James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and a very beautiful Debra Paget - in one of the very best westerns that have ever been made with a true regard and understanding of the plite of the native American Indians. Not the first, in fact far from it, Tim McCoy's 1932's "End of the Trail" made a very bold attempt to depict the native American as being very human and very much wronged by the white man. That aside, this movie has a great deal more to recommend it; the superb techicolor, the sensitive direction (Delmer Daves)with the perfect mix of drama, action and suspence. Highly recommended to all serious collectors of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encounter between two worlds.
I've seen Broken Arrow when I was just a kid. The power of the images of this film remained in the back of my mind. In the near past a collection of the best Far West movies was edited in Argentina. This was the first title I run to buy. I wasn't disappointed with what I found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Horse, A Warrior I Honor !!
This is a really great movie and by far the truest of all movies that I've seen for the Custer battle. Crazy Horse is my hero and I still study a great deal of him and the Lakota/Sioux tribe.2-0 out of 5 stars Oh, Geez!
Didn't like this one. Glad to see Native actors/actresses, butthis portrayal of Crazy Horse way off the mark as far as I wasconcerned. Maybe not quite as bad as the first one--Chief Crazy Horse (from the 50s with Victor Mature), but not much better either. Too much Hollywood here--lots of paint horses and feathers. KL

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching
A wonderfull movie! Attention to detail, for example some of the statements made by Crazy Horse and Custer, period costume and battles. It is interesting to note that Custer had cut his hair before the battle of the Little Big Horn, which appears to be the only movie to portray this accurately. Custer dies somewhere during the battle and not in the 'classic' back to back end of the battle senario as is popularly portrayed in the 'hero' literature.Read more

Editorial Review

Jack Crabb is the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn and the centenarian shares his story in this picaresque fable of the Old West. In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel, Dustin Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in a bravura performance. And Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman, and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, with a strong statement to make about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonizing. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, and Richard Mulligan. But this show is all Hoffman's. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be listed in fiction & comedy
Not what I was expecting.A little too long also.It had funny parts and sad parts, but mostly was a little "low budget" and almost put me to sleep. It was in Dustin Hoffman's early years, so I give him a break there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Movie Magic!
This is pure movie magic. The kind where people sigh and exclaim, "They don't make them like this anymore!"Actually this movie was made after the time of "They don't make this anymore," which makes it even more special.Dustin Hoffman gives probably his best performance ever and all the actors stand out perfectly.Faye Dunaway is a riot and Chief Dan George is very memorable. My only regret is not having seen this movie in a theatre yet.It is warm, engaging and very funny.I highly recommend the film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Big Man
Dustin Hoffman gives one of his best performances (although, almost all of his performances are wonderful) in Little Big Man, a kind of western/comedy/road movie. You know those movies where you follow a character around from misadventure to misadventure while they meet a large share of quirky characters. Recent examples of those kind of films would be Jesus' Son and Breakfast on Pluto; Little Big Man is also one of those kinds of movies. When the film opens we meet 121-year old Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman), who looks like Grandpa from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. Jack is about to give an interview to a guy who wants to know about indians; Through flash-backs and voice-over Jack tells his story. As a boy, Jack and his family are ambushed by a group of indians but saved by another group (the Cheyenne). With only his sister and him, they go off to live with the indians but his sister escapes quickly leaving Jack all alone. As Jack proves his merit to the indians, he earns the nickname Little Big Man. After a battle where he is almost killed by a white man, he is brought into town and sent to live with two-overly religious people Mr. and Mrs. Pendrake. While Mr. Pendrake is an old religous man, Mrs. Pendrake (Faye Dunaway) is quite different. She appears to be a religious fanatic, but there's something else there as well. After catching her with another man, Jack ends up with a traveling "healer" named Mr. Meriweather who is prone to losing various body parts. After that debacle, he's reunited with his sister and becomes a gunslinger but after watching Will Bill Hickok (Jeff Corey) gun down a man, he quits that too. This is all in the first hour alone and this movie runs over two hours long. I'm not a big fan of movies involving cowboys and indians and such; But this movie is actually pretty good. It's very entertaining, all the characters are great, the performances are wonderful, the script is solid. Faye Dunaway isn't even in the movie that long, but she's a scene-stealer in this film for sure. This movie, which features Dustin Hoffman aging from 10 years old to 121 years old holds the world record for doing so. It's the longest anyone's lived on film apparently. It's an interesting film, it's funny and it's hard to not to enjoy.

Editorial Review

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't Shoot the Piano Player
I watched "The Wild Rovers" last night mainly because I have always enjoyed the acting of William Holden (as well as Karl Malden who also plays a major role in the movie).Holden has such a quick, yet (by American standards) articulate delivery that he sounds like an effusive Bob Hope in a dramatic role.He has made every movie I've seen him in better because of his presence in the cast.Sometimes, however, the structure of the movie fails to support the quality of the cast. For me, the problems with "The Wild Rovers" is not Holden or any of the actors; it's Blake Edwards.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best westerns ever
MY RATING- 7.65-0 out of 5 stars A Real Western
Much like "Unforgiven" , this western falls more in the reality of the wild west than the "typical western".The characters;such as Karl Malden as the hard rancher patriarch, William Holden's happygo lucky cowboy, Tom Skerrit and Joe Don Baker as the two sons who live intheir father's (Maldin) shadow are real character's that develop and grow. This movie stays away from thin stale western stereotypes.Very humorousbantering between Holden and O'neal adds a nice touch to the movie, but thehumor is never used to soften the violence or emotional impact of themovie. There are no "good guys" and "bad guys" either. Much like the real world everyone in this picture has an angle on thetruth and whats right. The director leaves it to the viewer to decidewhats right instead of spoon feeding it to you with"black-hat/white-hat" simplicity.Wonderful movie particularlyfor the western fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking outside of the Duke's
First of all, An Overture, Entr'Acte, and Exit music. Rare indeed for a movie in the 1970's not to mention indicative of an epic (And in this case, also intimate) story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Duke flick. Has you cheering and tearing.
While not great by Hollywood standards (how many Duke flicks actually were?), relative to other Duke flicks and westerns in general, "The Cowboys" is actually a great watch. You won't have the constant action of a "Wild Bunch", nor the drama of a "High Noon." But that hardly seems the poiint of this movie. John Wayne is at his avuncular best while still retaining the bravado we all grew to know and love. Unusual story of Wayne's hiring of school boys to help him on his cattle drive brings a different twist to the ending. But the Duke okays the gutsy plot twist that will forever leave "The Cowboys" as one of the most memorable Wayne flicks of all time. Bruce Dern has one of his more effective roles as Wayne's antagonist. Forget those who say this movie isn't for kids. Most westerns weren't designed necessarily to teach kids morals, nor lessons. This film is no exception. But like any great western, you'll cheer, you'll hate, and you just might choke up. Many like myself, wanted the story to continue but were betrayed by a sappy, ill-conceived TV series that went nowhere. This is a must see for John Wayne fans and those who like a different twist to their westerns. I'd even say this is a movie lots of kids would like, especially given the content in most movies that kids watch today,

5-0 out of 5 stars every now and then "the duke" reminded everyone of what a great actor he was
the cowboys stands along side the searchers, rio bravo, stagecoach, red river, and the shootest as proof that wayne was a very gifted actor. when his hands leave for a gold strike,mr.anderson(wayne) must take 11 school boys and turn them into cowboys to help him get his cattle to market. the trip is long, dangerous, and a learning time for all. wayne is very good as the rancher and he really shines whenever he is talking(yelling) at the boys. there is a feel here that he really thinks of the boys as sons and the boys hold there own with wayne which must have been tough to do. as for those who feel that the message of the movie is revenge, maybe they have missed the point,it's about pride ,honor, following through with your word, and most of all it's about learning that being a man of honor isn't easy but it is the only way to live your life.

This story gives me the chance to get back to nature the way it waswhen the free trappers still roamed the west.My whole familyloves watching it time and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars starkly beautiful
There is a poetry to this movie that has stayed with me - from the first time I ever saw it, when it first came out. From the haunting strains of Indian flutes as we first see the ferry bringing Jeremiah to the first stop in his new life - a trading post outfitting those intrepid or crazy enough to disappear into the wild - to the end, when he has weathered more than anyone today probably could survive, we are absorbed into a world that will never be possible again. Trappers routinely sleep in deep snow without tents and without freezing to death; a mountain man, mauled by a bear and incapacitated, calmly writes out his last will and testament, leaving his rifle to "whutever finds it - Lord hope it be a White man", and freezes to a tree; another mountain man shaves his head to prevent himself being scalped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broken Chain for your Eric Schewig collection is a must
I am a huge fan of Eric Schweig so I may be a little partial to any of his flicks.I did buy this movie from e-bay for my ERIC collection, (13 flicks total) AAH!! It wasn't bad for a TV flick. What can you really show viewers in just aone or two hour movie?I think it showed how supporting the backstabbing British did the 6 nations in. Eric did a great job in his role and he's not too bad to look at either. LUV YA, ERIC! I think more flicks like this need to be made to show the truth in what the white man did to the Native population. From starving them, paying for indian scalps, shipping them to Florida ,to infecting them with smallpox on blankets. You can get farther in this world with peace and compassion than fear and ignorance.PEACE:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Fine 3rd Calvary Movie
The third and last of the calvary is also the weakest. That's not to say its a bad film.Rio Grande explores the Army officer's conflicted devotions to his family and to his uniform. The first half is quite good with Wayne contending with having both his son and his estranged wife (who's house he burned down in the Civil War) underfoot as he tries to do his job fighting the Indian Wars. Unfortunately, the second half of the film is a bit of a letdown.Instead of further developing the fascinating character of Wayne as an excellent soldier and poor father and husband, Ford gives the viewer far too many singing cowboy interludes and an elaborate and unconvincing fight sequence and daring rescue mission. Can't help but feel Ford and Wayne ducked a great opportunity in favor of easy action entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yellow Stripes On Britches Blue
I am in total agreement with those who don't regard this piece of filmwork as something "lightweight" or "throwaway" when compared to "Fort Apache" or "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". Nor is it "just" a "sleepwalking" effort by John Ford to gain financing from Herbert Yates at Republic for a Technicolor production of "The Quiet Man" (which it DID succeed in doing).
4-0 out of 5 stars RIO GRANDE: WAYNE-O'HARA-FORD!
In order to be able to film "The Quite Man",director John Ford was forced by Republic Studio head Herbert Yates to make this John Wayne-Maureen O'Hara Western, which is the third and final calvary epic Ford filmed in a three (3) year period(1948-'50)the other two being "Fort Apache",my favorite all-time Western, and the technicolor classic,"She Wore A Yellow Ribbon",all three having John Wayne in the lead.Yates felt that an Irish romantic-comedy,as did other studios who refused to finance the project, which they felt would be a box office loser! Were they wrong!

4-0 out of 5 stars I Liked It...Just Not as Much as Everyone Else Does.
"The Searchers" is considered by many to be a masterpiece of both the Western genre and of movies in general. It's even on The American Film Institute's Top 100 (#96). I liked the film; It's got a lot of good things about it, but one thing I look for in a film to really call it "Great" is entertainment. The movie is entertaining, but a movie on that same list that's a few notches below it ('Unforgiven') was a much better movie; Both as a film and as entertainment. Anyway, I've seen over a thousand movies and have somehow never seen a John Wayne film. Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who shacks up with his brother and his family. After they're all killed and his two nieces are kidnapped, Ethan sets out on an obsessive quest to get them back. One of the nieces is found dead soon after and the rest of the film is about them trying to find the living one Debbie (Natalie Wood). Along with him is Martin Pauley (Jeffrey Hunter), a man Ethan doesn't really like. Ethan hates indians and Martin is 1/8 Comanche. Early in the film, you find out that Ethan actualyl saved Martin when his family was killed by indians and gave him to his brother and his brother's wife. Even though he seems disagreeable, it sounds like Ethan's quest in honorable enough. But, you'd be wrong. He's not out to save Debbie, but to kill her. When people are kidnapped by the indians, they pretty much become one...And Ethan can't have that. The movie takes place over a long time span and there were times that, I thought, the movie seemed longer than it was. The film has beautiful cinematography though, especially when you consider that the film was released in 1956. John Wayne's performance is very good and, you find later, multilayered. Having read about the film a little bit, I found that it inspired movies like Taxi Driver and even the Buddy Holly song
5-0 out of 5 stars A great reproduction of a great movie with a great set of Extras
I need to preface this review with the comment that I am not a John Wayne fan. However "The Searchers" is often said to be the Duke's best movie. And it is clear from here that he was no cardboard cut out actor and, if anything, his real talents were underused in his career. Still "The Searchers" is a classic and deserves to be better known.
5-0 out of 5 stars On the Edge of Perfection
Okay, let's get it said and out of the way: "The Searchers" is one of the greatest films ever made. There, it's done. We can move on now. It can be hard to view, and harder still to write about, a film with such reputation for greatness and such a deep background of commentary as John Ford's 1956 classic. The film holds great cultural weight and a completely objective approach to the film is, for most, impossible. It is the most quintessential film of the most quintessential American genre, and its themes and characters take on infinite meaning towards the country and people they represent. It is perhaps the richest western ever produced in both scale and content. And yet "The Searchers" is really two films in one, and while many like to conveniently ignore its failures, they still fall from the screen cold and lifeless whenever viewed. The film is great because of its challenge to the commonly held notions of history, both cinematic and actual, that have produced it, and yet it still gets caught up in the pitfalls it at other moments so brilliantly rejects. For as much as we would like it to not be, "The Searchers" is still a studio film of Old Hollywood, and a western to boot, and despite it undisputable greatness, at times in the film this is painfully evident.

This movie has to rank as one of the funniest under-rated movies in the whole spoof western genre. The incident with the witch doctor, the duel with the chief's son, the flaming arrows, no, I'm not going to tell you what happened. The nude swim in the water hole, and how that girl can fill a wet blanket, (brings a whole new meaning to the phrase}.
5-0 out of 5 stars a very funny send-up of the west dino style
with joey bishos an "indian" (you must see and hear to believe) dean martin rides threw this comedy wiyh his own style. just a great family movie that everyone will love.i hope it comes to dvd like every other movie ever made seems to be doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars To the rear - Har!
I've searched high and low to find this classic western comedy. It is one of my favorite Dean Martin vehicles. I felt that all the actors and actresses played their parts to perfection. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted romp through the west. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Western the way it should be
This is a well done, made-for-TV Western based on the Louis L'Amour novel of the same name. There is so much to like in this movie. This is not some grand epic like `Dances with Wolves', the scale and scope of the action are small, and the plot straightforward. The casting and acting are great.Sam Elliot was put on this Earth to play the role of L'Amour's quiet loners. He has such a great voice and presence.Katherine Ross, his love interest in this movie and his wife in real life, is also outstanding.Conagher has some great lines in this movie, as other reviews have alluded to.Ken Curtis (Festus!) also has an important role in this movie.Any Western with Festus can't be bad.The cinematography is terrific.Beautiful shots of the wilderness, the badlands, and the open sky. This movie is also full of atmosphere.Without trying to describe what atmosphere is in a Western, the best Westerns (such as John Wayne's Rio Bravo, and including this film) have it.There is also a certain gritty realism to this movie that is lacking in many Westerns made in the past twenty years. The characters get dirty and tired. One small point about this film that I really found compelling was that the shots and lever actions of the Winchesters sound as they really do.Most gunshots in movies don't sound like real gunshots. This is a small but important detail for realism, and it really adds to the experience of being part of the action, not just a distant observer. The only reason that I don't give this movie five stars is that the editing and transition between scenes are horrible.Perhaps this is an artifact of TV (commercial breaks) or perhaps it indicates that there were more scenes initially shot that were cut from the finished film, I don't know.Scenes just abruptly end, and there are discontinuous, seemingly random jumps, in time and space in the film.It makes the final product somewhat choppy in my opinion. This is a great (and underappreciated) Western in any case, and a worthy addition to any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie - caution to parents
I really think this is a great movie, Very little swearing, some fist-fights and gunslinging. Clean enough for my 8 and 11 year old boys to watch. However, be careful parents, because on the DVD, the preview to other movies contains frontal nudity.(accessible through the main menu)You might want to store it out of their reach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exciting western with impressive cast
Rio Conchos is a very good western with violence that is still a bit startling when you see it today, much less in 1964.A wagon train carrying 2,000 new repeating rifles has been stolen causing the army to worry where they went. Two soldiers team up with a drunken ex-Confederate officer and a bandit to track down the missing guns. While searching, they discover a Confederate officer, Colonel Theron Pardee, who is trying to start the Civil War all over again by giving Apache warriors the new repeating rifles. The small group must try and stop him as they battle Mexican bandits, Apache warriors, and even themselves.Rio Conchos is a grim western with a very realistic tone. The violence seems out of place for the time, but it is still very effective, most notably in the torture scene towards the end.Jerry Goldsmith turns in another excellent score, sometimes reminiscent of Bandolero. For an enjoyable yet dark western, check out Rio Conchos.5-0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Now south of the border
Rio Conchos is a very action filled outing very similar to 2 other films but good in its own right. It stars Richard Boone and Tony Franciosa as 2 renegades who team with 2 soldiers played by Stuart Whitman and Jim Brown in his debut to track down an ex-Rebel Colonel played by Edmond O'brien. He is trying to reestablish the confederacy in Mexico using stolen rifles and Apaches as his new troops. The Jerry Goldsmith score is superb and the action is constant. The film is much like Whitman's earlier effort The Comancheros with John Wayne, and has some noticeable parallels to 1979 Vietnam movie Apocalypse Now. The journey upriver, the renegade Colonel using native troops, etc. all predate Coppola's effort. After a recent viewing I speculated if screenwriter John Milius may have been influenced by this film. A definite favorite of mine and one of the most rugged westerns of the 1960's.
