5-0 out of 5 stars Great Video
THe Piano is A Grand Instrument and their have Been Many Grand Musicians in Jazz that Have Played it.this Video Reflects that&More.Chick Corea is a Musical Genius Period. His Fusion is Incredible. From His Days WithMiles Davis,Return To Forever&His Other Projects He is Incredible.IReally Enjoyed this.Fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great insight into some of the greatest piano jazz
This video is very well made, and Chick's hosting and narrative in well thought out and conveys a deep knowledge of the medium. (After all, he IS Chick Corea) Sound quality on most of the clips is accurate for the mostpart, but it's the content that really makes it shine. You don't have to bea musician to enjoy this video. It contains a lot of information about thehistory of piano jazz, and there is a surprising treat at the end. Chick, one of the most underrated and understated musicians of our time, plays apiano solo version of his composition "The Yellow Nimbus" that isnothing less than spectacular. I actually heard this version before I heardthe one on his "Touchstone" CD, with Paco De Lucia. That one isawesome too. (As you can tell, I'm a big Chick fan). GET THIS VIDEO. It's agreat value at twice the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chick Corea at his best
Chick Corea is probably the most underated pianist in the industry.Often misunderstood because of his ecclectic sound and provocative themes, Chick Corea's other works in the classical realm are unfortunately overlooked. Piano Legends gives us a Chick Corea we rarely see.It shows us that knowhim even more of what he does and gives many an insight on who Chick Coreareally is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Four volumes of historic archival footage of the greats of the Age of Swing.
Though the "Swing Era" evolved between 1935 and 1945, the influence of swing continued well into the fifties and sixties, and in this collection of black and white film clips from the Universal Studios archives, many of the great names associated with swing are shown in undated concerts, probably (judging from their appearance) between 1945 and 1955.No narration interrupts the flow of music and film, just brief still photographs of the performers to introduce the various groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Piece of Jazz History
I really love the way Count Basie played piano and one didn't get to hear much of it in the big band setting. This VCR/DVD gives one a chance to let the Count stretch out and also gives the viewer an opportunity to watch him and his group play and listen to the Count talk.Recommended for the jazz fan and any piano student.I play it often and learn something every time.It features the Count, Sonny Payne, Freddie Greene and Norman Keenan on bass.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have, for any jazz buff
this is an incredible movie. I was so moved by this documentary that I buy them now to give to loved ones, and any one that I feel will appreciate it's grandeur. A must have for any jazz buff.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a classic!
The Director, Bruce Ricker, may not be a household name in film, but some impressive credits in recent Clint Eastwood films are telltale and their collaboration is the result of the excellent way in which he put this filmtogether.Read more

Editorial Review

With traditions that variously intersect and parallel those of jazz, the blues has likewise emerged as a uniquely American musical dialect that has powerfully influenced music from the early 20th century forward.Whether tuned to the stark individuality of country blues, with its often-harrowing,adult themes of sex, death, and violence, or keyed to the livelier cadences and more boisterous moods of the urban strains that would later evolve into R&B, the blues have become uniquely pervasive. 1-0 out of 5 stars This DVD sucks. Buy somethign else.
More stock footage woven between three old guys too busy talking about, to actually live the blues. The rare footage of Bessie smith, Billie Holiday, etc., etc. (almost all the greats are listed as having footage on here) is non-existent and pretty much adds up to a couple of promotional photos. Lame. To top it all off, it's even incfredibly short, but I didn't even notice that much. Poor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start "The Year of The Blues" by Watching This!
The first five minutes tells it all with fine editing of a diddely bow, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Miles Davis into a mosaic of images and music that define blues and blues-based jazz for all time. You will find some new insight at which to marvel everytime you revisit this classic. One of the very finest blues documentaries ever made. You don't have to be a blues historian of even a fan to enjoy this fine DVD and gain new insights into the history not only of bluesmen or Blacks but America. The diaspora, the great migration from the deep South to the North was, at the time, the greatest peacetime migration in human history and its story is told in Bluesland. Toby Byron and his associates are to be celebrated for this excellent work of art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Hour of Brilliance
This video is simply fantastic on all counts. Two time Grammy Award winner Diane Schuur joins the Count Basie Orchestra in a wonderful concert recorded at the Rainbow Room in New York in 1987. The legendary Jazz vocalist whose lovely and pristine voice ehoes that of Ella Fitzgerald sings 14 wonderful tunes from the Jazz era of the 1940's and sings each song with the expertise and finess of the seasoned professional that she is. The lady with the sultry and crystal clear voice has been blind since birth and overcame her handicap to become one of the leading voices in Jazz. This performance is excellent and is one that you will enjoy tremendously. I only wish the video was longer yet the selections that she performed were brilliant. The Count Basie Orchestra did an outstanding job in backing her up they're really a terrific orchestra. This is Diane Schuur at her finest and if you're a fan of this Jazz legend you cannot miss this incredible live performance. Just like the title of this review this performance from Ms.Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra is a captivating hour of brilliance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY IMPORTANT
THis is a Great Documentry on The Genius that is Count Basie. He was One Of The Greatest Musicians Ever. His Bands Were always Tight. He was Such A Down Too Earth MAN.Very Essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Nice Guy
Don't expect a music video--it's a documentary, and an excellent one, much of it in Basie's own words and those of some of his best sidemen. No serious Basie fan should miss it.

2-0 out of 5 stars More narration than music.
Thisis anarration ofBasie's life. Too much narration throughout thevideo and not enoughmusic.Thereis not one song played from beginning to end completely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Coltrane's Performance

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts slow, and builds intensity
It seems as though this disc polarizes the reviewers; either they love it or hate it.Though it has its flaws, I'd have to say it's very worthwhile.I agree with the ones who didn't like Ralph J. Gleason's style.Yes, he's irritating, but he takes up very little time on the Gillespie and Coltrane segments.See the "Jazz Scene USA" series with Oscar Brown, Jr. for a late 50s/early 60s era jazz program with a first rate host and better production values. At first viewing I thought the Basie segment was disappointing, but it's grown on me.Diz was the main reason I bought this disc, and he didn't disappoint. He was even a good sport for the interview. His segment cooks at a consistent simmer.Very nice, but Coltrane cuts Diz for the highlight of the program. He's at one of his peaks, with a killer band, and they just keep ratcheting the intensity up higher and higher until the end.I'm not sure about the guy who gave this one star... he talks as if the picture and sound are worse than they actually are (reasonable but not stellar for their era) and like Gleason was on between every song (he was for Basie's and The Count seemed annoyed).I'd like to see more of these 3-on-1 Jazz Casual compilations.A single disc of 30 minutes with no bonus material is a waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it if you're listening.
I'm a working jazz pianist in the Seattle area and always looking to get closer to Basie's perspective. If you've got ears and want to see these guys in action, get this disk.Granted, there are some short interviews, but it's a small price to pay to see a slice of the minimal good footage available from these long gone times in jazz history.A player's textbook in black and white! ...
