5-0 out of 5 stars If you liked the Play, you'll love the Concert!!
This was an all star performance of the first order. The settting in the Royal Theater, the scale and depth of the ensemble cast is simply mind blowing. With regard to the role of Eponine by Lea Salonga. Ms. Salonga is fantastic in the role of Eponine. Eponine is a tragic person, she is the virtuous one in a family of thieves, she is street smart yet vulnerable. And she should be angry since he father was going to marry her off to a member of his gang (A drunken thug). Eponine runs away from her family and is rescued by Marius with whom she falls in love only to have him fall in love with another. In Lea Salonga's Eponine I see all those elements brought together in a way that is touching and heartbreaking. Just listening to her and Michael Ball in "A little fall of rain" was the highlight of this concert to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than ever
I've had this musical on vhs (taped off public tv) for years and have always found it exhilarating. I decided to get the DVD because my tape was wearing out! :-)This musical cannot compare to anything else (except maybe seeing the musical in person). Among others, Colm Wilkinson and Michael Ball are excellent). It's an emotionally charged presentation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
If you have seen the musical, this is the perfect DVD to bring back the memory.Although no replacement for the stage show, it is far better than listening to a CD.The performers are in costume and very much in charater even though singing in concert. There are some video clips of the actual musical inserted during the concert that helps you keep your time frame. It goes without saying that the "dream cast" gives a great performance.Next best thing to being there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Liza At Her Very Best - Live Concert
Thank goodness this one is saved on video. This is Liza at her very best in 1992 singing and dancing. I have been discovering that the live concerts are so much more enjoyable to listen to than the similar audio CDs. The combination of the video and thehi-fi stereo can not be replaced with an audio CD. I especially liked the dancing on this one. A solid 5 stars with no hesitation. Also, there is very little of Liza's work available on VHS or DVD making this video priceless.

5-0 out of 5 stars An A+ For "Liza With A 'Z'"!
Liza Minnelli's recent vocal and physical problems seem to have made real skeptics out of some former admirers. It's good to have this video on hand to show doubters what Liza was (and maybe still is?) capable of at her best.Liza was still in top form in the early 90s as this concert footage shows.Sure her voice is getting a little huskier by this point, but she can put over a song--just about any song--like nobody's business. And as others have often pointed out, her overall stage presence, her polished "acting out" of the songs and the intros, and her elaborate choreography make for a whole package.Whether it's a sensitive quiet version of an Aznavour classic--on which she "signs" along with the music, to powerful effect--or a brassy "Some People" (ah, would that she had had the chance to play Mama Rose onstage or screen!), it's a great, well thought-out and balanced production. Her dance numbers--backed by her "demon divas," a group of talented women of all ages and sizes (what a concept! real people!)--are brilliantly choreographed and performed. This is, as they say, hugely entertaining.Liza Minelli has always been a talent to be reckoned with.It is unfortunate that she has been beset by troubles in recent years, but if people want an idea of what she's capable of and why she is so loved and respected, this video (which will hopefully be available on DVD soon as well) is a great place to start.

3-0 out of 5 stars the performance of a lifetime???
Well, maybe I have to watch this once again, because I couldn't wait for this to be over. I thought I would love everything Liza did, but maybe because I didn't know the songs I didn't enjoy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You thought this was good...
You should see it live. One reviewer earlier mentioned that the DVD is a teaser, it may be to those who have seen the show, but to the uninformed, the DVD makes a great prepper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy and Precision
This is simply the best DVD I have ever seen.I have seen the stage production, and the only thing missing from the DVD is the trumpet slide malfunction I witnessed (the tuning slide for the third valve flew off and landed on the side of the stage during some of the high speed movements. As a former trumpet player and drum major I may be slightly biased, but think about what they did...
5-0 out of 5 stars BLAST-THE MUSICAL
WHAT A SHOW. I'M AN OLD BRASS PLAYER FROM THE 70'S WHEN THE DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS WERE IN THEIR INFANCY. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPETITIONS AND EXHIBITIONS, BUT NONE COMPARE TO THIS. THESE GUYS AND GALS START WITH ONE INSTRUMENT, CHANGE TO ANOTHER, PICK UP A FLAG OR RIFLE-LIKE OBJECT (WHAT WAS THAT?) AND SO ON. THERE WAS NO LACK OF TALENT HERE. IF I HADN'T SEEN MAYNARD FERGUSON, I WOULD HAVE SWORN HE DIED AND WAS RE-INCARNATED IN ONE OF THE TRUMPETS. AND THE ENERGY...IT WAS NON STOP FROM ONE FORMATION TO ANOTHER. THEN THE DRUMS-THE DRUMS-ACTUALLY THE SNARE DRUMMER-HE ALONE WOULD DESTROY THE ENTIRE ENSEMBLE OF THE PERCUSSIONISTS IN THE MOVIE "DRUM LINE". I'M TALKING FROM ALL OF THE SCHOOLS REPRESENTED IN THAT FILM! THEN THEY SANG. IS THERE NO END TO THEIR TALENT? I FELT LIKE I WAS WATCHING RIVERDANCE, ONLY REPLACE THE DANCERS WITH DRUM CORPS MEMBERS. ACTUALLY, COMPARATIVELY RIVERDANCE IS A CADILLAC, BUT BLAST! IS THE BENTLEY. IT TAKES ALOT TO IMPRESS THIS OLD BAND GUY. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. ... Read more

In the wake of MTV, disco, and the rise of reality-based television and 24/7 gossip, the notion of the pop diva has become commonplace, the title conferred on an increasingly broad (and dubious) array of ladies who sing.Consider this brilliant 1994 concert special, originally aired on cable, both as a warning about the debasement of the term, and as a primer on how a true pop diva comports herself.Acting as producer and director, and weaving her considerable gifts as an actress through a sumptuous bouquet of wonderful songs, Barbra Streisand creates a beautifully structured two-act review that works on multiple levels.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Papa Can You Hear Me?
I'm going to make this short.
5-0 out of 5 stars STAR
I just re-watched this video after several years, and all the goosebumps are still there. It also re-confirms a fact: There is NO ONEalive on the planet today who is remotely as talented as Barbra Streisand. Though the days of her visibility and selling records in the big numbers might as well be considered pre-historic, she remains a true living legend, with any of the hype that surrounds celebrity today being totally unnecessary. I probably hadn't listened to her recordings or thought much about her in years, at the time of this concert. When I viewed it, it re-confirmed to me what true talent is, which you don't expect anymore, when the likes of Britney Spears are "superstars." Barbra in this concert is not only filled with humanity, charm, and humility, but "the voice" is as near perfect as any of her recordings....better, really. What might have been considered self-indulgence by anyone else, here, is only fascinating...she has the audience literally rising out of their seats at a mere gesture. There are many highlights, too many to mention. If you're a fan, this is truly the "ultimate event." If not, you should watch it anyway, to see first hand what is meant by "God given talent" There has never been anyone like Barbra Streisand, and there never will be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection....
It just doesn't get any Grander than this. This is Barbra at her finest! Her duet with Marlon Brando is nothing short of genius. Some of my favorite moments are "Rain On My Parade" and "On a Clear Day". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Performer!
I recently purchased this WONDERFUL video and after watching it, kicked myself for not having purchased it sooner. McDonald, a now 4-time Tony winner and Julliard grad, shows in this video why she is so celebrated. She has an incredible vocal technique and is a delight in both her meaty and solid lower notes and her jaw-dropping high notes. She is the perfect performer because she not only sings her songs but also acts then, rather inhabits them, letting them seep deep in every part of her to deliever to the audience. You believe that McDonald has a deep connection with these lyrics in her performances. She is able to tackle every style of song in this video. Her performance of Jason Robert Brown's "Stars and the Moon" made me fall in love with it all over again. She delievers "Beat my Dog" with every air of believabilty and sass. I actually began to love "A Sleepin Bee" which, although a great song, has never been one of my personal favorites. Her performance of Sondheim's " So Many People" was wonderful as was "The Man that Got Away", a song that can be difficult to perform considering the performer who made it famous ( Judy Garland for those who don't know)."Some Days" was added to my list of favorite songs due to her powerhouse performance.5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure in a box
Is there anything Audra McDonald cannot do in the world of musical theater? Four Broadway roles, three Tony awards, two magnificently different solo recordings, and now this video of her in solo concert format would seem to indicate not.5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
I saw parts of this show on the local PBS station during a recent pledge drive.(The video includes songs not shown on PBS.)I also saw Ms. McDonald perform this show here in DC in May.The video capturessplendidly all of Ms. McDonald's myriad charms -- her stunning voice, hermusical and interpretive intelligence, her elegant grace and herunderstated charisma. While Ms. McDonald's show encompassed many songsthat she has performed on her solo CDs and on others, it does include anumber of songs that she has never recorded (or at least released).Theonly "flaw" the video has is that it doesn't include (and perhapsshe didn't perform it then) her show-stopping performance of the"aria" she introduced on Broadway in "Ragtime" --"Your Daddy's Son" -- which was even more powerful in an intimatesetting with only piano accompaniment.(Maybe she did perform it in Londonand it will be on the DVD, if such a thing is ever released.)Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I REALLY hate to say this, but...
I AM Chinese, I live in China, so you can understand that I DO NOT want to say something bad about it, but the fact remains this piece of thing cannot be honestly given a score other than 1 star, since Amazon apparently does not have a 0-star or 0.5-star rating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great show!
After watching this DVD the first time I was not overly impressed by the performances. I got tired of seeing the same three faces again and again, especially when I did not exactly know who they were. Don't get me wrong, they all give incredible performances, but I wanted more. However, after watching the "Making Of" this production in the DVD's special features I was forced to watch it again and found a new appreciation for what I was seeing. I understood the hard work put into this production and was able to see why this concert was so important. If you are an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan I would highly recommend purchasing this DVD. Elain Paige is great and Tony Vincent will blow you away.

5-0 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE WITHOUT A DOUBT
Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

I have enjoyed the Wizard of Oz in Concert for years, and only recently discovered it online.I only regret that it is not on DVD, allowing for a slightly higher quality, and hopefully the ability to watch the concert straight through without the side bits dispersed throughout it. I definately recommend it for anyone who enjoys the Wizard of Oz.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Wizard has a heart
I was blown away by this video. When I heard that Roger Daltrey was in "The Wizard of Oz in Concert" as the Tin Man, I was anxious to see it, but a bit worried that it might not be as magical as the original.I was wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie!
I first saw this movie on TNT, and I loved it. The costumes were excellent! Jewel's acting will blow you away! She was perfect as Dorothy. Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Natalie Cole as Glinda the Good Witch, Debra Winger as the Wicked Witch, and Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man were excellent too. And Nathan Lane was HILARIOUS as the Cowardly Lion! I watch this movie everyday. This is a MUST SEE for Oz fans. In my opinion, I think "The Wizard of Oz in Concert" is better than the original 1939 movie. :) ... Read more

Bernadette Peters is a glorious anachronism, a tiny New Yorker with abig voice, coppery pre-Raphaelite curls, and the sort of ripe physicality that made it logical she should ignore PC and have legendary pinup artist Vargas capture her for an albumcover portrait. While most of her musical peers were getting funky, getting in touch with themselves, or getting high, Peters was honing her skills as a musical actress, setting her compass by Broadway with occasional detours to Hollywood. Now Peters is acknowledged as one of the Great White Way's natural wonders, a bona fide Tony-winning musical comedy star performing here in her first full-length video concert.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bernadette ~ The Broadway Babe
Had a great night with friends watching this concert. For anyone who loves the Broadway Musical ~ here is a tribute concert that shines. Her interpretation of Sondheim is magic and the diversity is awesome. We travel through torch songs like, "Not a Day goes by" or "Move On" to "You could drive a Person Crazy" and "Hello Little Girl". I especially enjoyed her slant on "Later".
5-0 out of 5 stars Born for Broadway...and Sondheim
Has there ever been a more natural artistic partnership than that between Bernadette Peters and Stephen Sondheim?Bernadette is one of the few performers I've seen who can handle a Sondheim song and deliver the depth and flavor it needs. It's only natural then that she would devote a good portion of this program to his works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Buy!!!
If you are looking for a night full of stars, humor, being touched, and are a Broadway fan, you should definitely buy this. Not all of the people you'd first consider stars are here, but there are some modern stars who just might become your new favorites. It was especially cool for me to see Audra McDonald after seeing her live in Anyone Can Whistle at Ravinia. Liza Minneli has changed the way most people sing "Some People", so though I didn't have a problem with it, some people might. Still, though you might not rate every song or singer an A+, they all worked very hard and the effect is nice. This is a wonderful add to any Broadway collection. Buy this-it's definitely worth it to watch a one or two million times!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Power!!!!!
I live in Los Angeles and am not very familiar with Broadway Musical Stars, however, I believe this DVD is a prime example of why these women are Broadway stars.Talk about star power!!!Yes, it is sad that Julie Andrews lost her voice and was unable to sing, but she lent a wonderful spirit to the whole show. What more can I say, even if you don't know Broadway, it's magic has been captured on this DVD. (The picture quality and sound are wonderful.)

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!

This is an excellent recording. The music is great if you love Broadway tunes this is a must to your collection. Donny has a voice that suits the songs he selected very well. The dancing, instrumentation is also very good.Vanessa Williams was also great. This album is also fun because Donny tries to make it very personal. He invites people onstage or is sitting on the steps eyel level with the audience. A first rate effort by Donny Osmond. This is a must own concert. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Sondheim!, but this DVD doesn't include everything.
I only give this DVD 4 stars (instead of the 5 I would normally give anything Sondheim) because I was gravely disappointed that they included only about half the show!!!I have had the CD of A Celebration at Carnegie Hall (which was taped live from the show, including audience reactions) for YEARS, listening and wishing I could see what the audience saw as well as being able to hear. When I discovered it was finally out on DVD, I was overjoyed.Next thing I know I got it for my birthday! What the DVD showed was great, but boy was it a let down that it didn't have everything in the show.If they can put all the songs in the CD version, surely they could have put the complete show of Sondheim-A Celebration at Carnegie Hall out for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lloyd-Webber!?!?!?!
Joseph...oh dear...Sondheim versus Lloyd-Webber?! The genius versus the money-maker, there is no competition. You may not like Sondheim, but he certainly doesn't deserve to attacked and brought down. He's breaking barriers which you clearly don't even know exist.....keep humming your Lloyd-Webber songs. To everyone else, all Sondheim work is worth a listen...it's not commercial, and not all of it is "catchy," but it's intricacy and subtle emotional potency hooked me, and is quite capable of doing the same to anyone, given the oppurtunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joseph Hart Doesnt Have A Clue
Sure, if you like composers who manage to plagerise their own work for every "new" "musical" they come up with.Sondheim is the greatest.Sure, so few of his songs have become "popular" music, but he composes good, no not good, OUTSTANDING music!ALW looks like a toddler banging on pans compared to Sondheim.Sweeney Todd is a brilliant piece of genius!Sondheim writes difficult pieces of music (an lyrics), that engage the audience, that stir their minds, send shivers down their spines and tears down their cheeks. He challenges the artist, he challenges what supposed "good music" is.Sondheim is a genius!

4-0 out of 5 stars Broadway Songs
I liked the DVD which I basically got for two reasons: Julie Andrews and Michael Crawford. I was introduced to new performers on Broadway, which I do not have the opportunity to visit at all. The quality of the CD is great.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love Songs?
This is one of those things where you have to have to aquire a taste for it. Sure there are some songs that are definitely a good add to any Broadway collection, but if you're a classical Broadway fan you might be a little...disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars By George, she's got it!
This DVD is a wonderful evening's entertainment. If you're anything like me then you'll applaud after the acts even if you do look like an idiot. Rebecca Luker, Bebe Neuwirth, Chita Rivera and so many others shine--such talent! My favourite numbers include "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" "I'm A Brass Band" "Every Single Day" and of course, the finale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aging Gracefully.
"Beautiful Girls". What a fantastic opportunity for lovers of Broadway musicals to see the behind the scenes creation and making of a successful musical in four days. This film is in part documentary combined with hi-lights of the finished performance at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. The story line of "Beautiful Women" attending a Follies Reunion so many years into retirement is powerful and awakens thoughts of aging. Mandy Patinkin, Carol Burnett, Barbara Cook and Lee Remick lead an all star cast in this Steven Sondheim Classic. You might want to view this film more than once.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAY UP THERE.........
LEE ..... Lee Remick, Barbara Cook, Mandy, George, Liliane, Carol ..... {A}licia ...Liz ...Betty ....Adolphe .... how quickly it fades .......SO????5-0 out of 5 stars I'LL TAKE ANY SCRAP I CAN GET!
True...this is not "the best" documentary film ever made, although it IS pretty darned good, and part of the criticism may come because most of us who would want to see this would be just as happy with just one long uncut take of the concert on film...but we do have that on CD (thank goodness!). And what a concert it was!!! This is as near a dream cast as one could hope for. Of course there will be be endless quibbling over that opinion, and endless comparisons to the OBC...that's the glory of theatre...many opinions. But the overall arc and energy of this concert is amazing and that cannot be disputed...the CD is a classic... and one of those rare few "I wish I were there" events captured on recording. That said, the documentary does offer delight in the backstage glimpses it gives, especiallly after several (hundred? thousand?) listenings to the CD. For instance...I went into this already worshipping and adoring Barbara Cook (for me there can be no other Sally Durant), but after watching, I was really hooked onto Lee Remick too. And there were lots of discovery moments like that because of the documentary...so it did indeed, bring me someplace that the concert CD alone did not, and for that I truly value this DVD. So, perfect? No. (And franky, what is?) But it is worth watching and re-watching, especially if you are a total Follies junky, or learning to become one. How many other backstage stories can you say that of? For me, darned few...this one's a keeper. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Culturally enriching
This dvd is a joy to watch. It was almost like being there in person. The music ranged from opera to the blues and other genres in between. The performances were emotionally stimulating and culturally enriching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable and Original
This doesn't get any better - unless you see and hear "Cook Dixon & Young Volume 1" - the 2nd album by these three unbelievable gentlemen! The original 3 mo' tenors are now singing and have been singing under their own names. Don't let any other advertisement throw you! If you see an album called "Three Mo Tenors" it is Cook Dixon & Young. If you see a concert featuring "3 Mo tenors" it is NOT Cook Dixon & Young. These men are incredible, versatile, and touch your soul like no other. A treasure!
