5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I was there
This concert was wonderful.Grover gave his all in this concert.I love this man music so much when good talent go so young. We much keep his legacy going on. Many artist stepped up to the plate and some amazing tributes to him.I can watch this concert over and over. There is another concert of his on dvd it is a must have too stand room only.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT man, GREAT legend & awonderful entertainer
He's was always real. That's why he was 5 things 1. A prophet 2. A God-given spirit 3. A musical genius 4. An ambassador and 5. A pioneer of the jazz community. I miss him dearly and wish he was here. Could've seen more from the man but he lives right here on this DVD. This would pay tribute 2 him just b/c he was a wonderful artist and a tru pioneer of jazz-funk.

1-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CONCERT - PITY ABOUT THE DVD
It was with great excitement that I ordered this DVD as I am a huge fan of the artist and if anything, an even bigger fan of the backing musicians.I have literally 100's of albums [audio] on which they appear. It was with even greater excitement that I opened the the package when it arrived.I was counting the days till the mailman arrived like akid before Christmas, as the only other visuals I have of them is the "One Trick Pony" video by Paul Simon. When I put it in my DVD player my first reaction was that I had the bad luck to get a dud copy.I re-read the box with all the positive media reviews about the quality etc.and particularly the reference to digital remastering of picture and sound. This I dont believe at all.It looks and sounds like it was merely 'dumped' i.e. transferred from video to DVD as quickly and cheaply as possible without any additional work at all.I have to turn the volume up to max and it sounds like a small radio/ cassette player. My disbelief was so great that my second reaction was to order another copy and discard this one as I could not believe that this was the same product depicted on the box.Oh, I should mention that I am allowing for the time that it was recorded, technology etc. as in the same package I received Paul Simon's"Concert at the Tower theatre Phil." DVD which was recorded one year BEFORE the Grover Washington in 1980 and it HAS been digitally re-mastered and is obviously much, much better in sound and vision. After going back to the AMAZON customer reviews [which I must have overlooked in my initial haste to order this item] I can see that other people had similar opinions to mine.Slipping into my TV 'Columbo' or 'Monk' detective mode I deduce that the media reviews on the box date from previous releases of this concert on earlier formats eg the 80's laser disc that two other customers have referred to.Also there is that old movie review trick of quoting only the good bits and out of context eg that Grover W had never played better than on this occasion. Im sure that's possible but its a pity they didnt capture this performance better.I will keep this DVD just for the pictures [such as they are] and play it with the TV sound off with my album playing 'Winelight' on the stereo for sound.I tried to find the company website on the box to ask them what happened but either I can't locate them or they're in hiding. Now three post scripts which are 'OFF TOPIC' but I'm sure the Amazon staff will screen and edit PS ONE In researching the Amazon customer reviews I came accross the reviews of Mr. Anthony Accordino. What great musical taste this gentleman has! i.e. most similar to mine! I kept on reading his reviewa till late and he even reviews the other DVDs I own and mentions often Eric GALE /Cornell Dupree/Steve Gadd and the group 'Stuff'who are my faviourite artists. I tried to find an email for this obviously cultured gent but no avail .I just hope he reads or is otherwise told about this fellow great mind so we can further think alike.Feel free to pass on my email to him [however I have submitted my wrong address to you Ive learned {there should be a "1" after my name] I shall try to correct it later without confusing you kind people.Which brings me to my 2nd and 3rd PS's TWO Its really great that you guys AMAZON print even negative reviews of products that you are trying to sell! Too bad all media is not this unbiased.PS 3 This comes under the headings "Confession "or "Backhanded Compliment" or both. If you research you will see that I purchased these DVDs through one of your competitors.Never again. I've only posessed a computer for one month and this is all new to me. I did not notice that you have next to your retail price a second discount price which is far cheaper than any of your competition.I currently have an order with you guys and all my future orders will be through you.Further, I shall inform any other luddites that I come accross of my experience too and reccommend that they shop with you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great survey of some great drummers
I could dissect this DVD, but am going to resist the temptation and cite only the drummers who I admire the most and who held my attention.
3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag - aficionados only
I was personallymost excited by the drumming sequence featuring Sunny Murray who seems to exude music through his whole body as if his body was part of the drum kit or the drum kit was an extension of his body.Music has got to be the thing so I'm less taken with Buddy Rich who is the "fastest drummer alive with the greatest technique etc" but I find musically uninteresting.Elvin Jones I was also taken with. The sequence with Louis Bellson was definitely the most accomplished in terms of development, musical interest and structure whilst Joe Morello being described by narrator Peter Erskine as the "poet" of the drum kit, may well be right. For drummers and jazz lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars a history lesson
Thankyou Hudson Music for putting this out. It not only helps keep some great drummers music and contributions alive, but its great fun to watch and is very instructional-since you get to see some of the founding fathers of drumming. Every drummer should see these old clips because then you can understand where the great drummers of today come from.Read more

Superb audio, interesting video direction, three virtuoso playersinteracting for more than two hours: recorded jazz concerts don't get muchbetter than this performance by the Keith Jarrett Trio. Pianist Jarrett, drummerJack DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock play two complete sets of standards inthis 1993 Japanese concert. Watching them is fascinating--especially Jarrett, eyes scrunched in concentration, writhing intensely, coaxing and wrenching ideasfrom his keyboard, and punctuating his improvisations with weird, off-keyvocalisms. But listening to them is even better. This is a group in perfect syncwith one another; even a 26-minute version of Miles Davis's "Solar" andJarrett's own "Extension" doesn't have a boring moment. You won't get much of a"show," per se--typically, Jarrett doesn't say a word to the audience--butthat's hardly the point. With musicians this good, the playing's the thing. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Video of the wonderful Tokyo '96 CD
I saw this listed on AMG and wanted it but couldn't find it here under Keith Jarrett. Eventually I discovered it under Jarrett/Peacock/De Johnette. Hooray! Editorial Review

The bravura drumming of the indomitable Buddy Rich may not be the onlything to recommend about this video, but it's certainly the main attraction.Taped in February 1973 at a nightclub in Rochester, New York, the 65-minuteperformance reveals a virtuoso who was still at the top of his game at age 55.Rich's power, dynamics, and sheer musicianship leave little doubt that he wasthe leader of his big band in much more than name only. But while his young, mostly little-known musicians are all strong players (notwithstanding thosehorrible '70s haircuts), the arrangements are less than stellar. Their attemptsto turn the likes of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and Paul McCartney's "UncleAlbert/Admiral Halsey" into swinging jazz outings are downright cheesy. Betterto skip to the end, when Rich plays two superb solos on a Read more

THAT IS A QUOTE FROM GENE KRUPA HIMSELF! i GET TIRED OF PEOPLE WHO INSIST ON COMPARING BUDDY WITH GENE OR WORSE RINGO{COME ON MAN WHERE ARE YOUR EARS? IT'S POINTLESS AND IGNORANT TO COMPARE BUDDY WITH RINGO IN ANY DIMENSION, ONE IS A ROCK DRUMMER THE OTHER IS A BIG BAND DRUMMER! FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE LIKE THE POSTER WHO DID THE ORIGINAL COMPARISON - LET'S JUST SAY THEY ARE WORLDS APART!THE VERY IDEA TO SUGGEST BUDDY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM SHOULD TAKE A BACK SEAT TO EITHER JOE JONES KRUPA AND OF ALL THE DRUMMERS RINGO STAR IS SICK!i JUST DON'T GET A PERSON WHO MAKES IDIOTIC STATEMENTS LIKE THAT.. THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO i THINK THAT EVERY DRUMMER SHOULD OWN IT THE AUDIO COULD BE BETTER BUT IT'S NOT BAD FOR 1973! GROW UP PEOPLE, WHAT? DO YOU REALLY NEED EVERYTHING TO SOUND LIKE IT WAS MIXED BY THE GRP GROUP? USE YOUR BRAINS, IT WAS RECORDED IN 1973..GIMME A BREAK WITH THE "i NEED EVERYTHING PERFECT" JIVE

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Buddy fans
It's always a joy watching and listening to Buddy play, but most of the video clips of him are on various composite videos, such as "Classic Drum Solos and Drum Battles" (ASIN B00005RDSJ) and its companion Volume II (ASIN B00006EDPF).In those, and similar videos Buddy's pyrotechnic drumming is showcased, but his overall playing is lost in the dazzle.

Guitarist, composer, and bandleader Pat Metheny has done it all in thecourse of his career, and on his own terms. He's recorded in solo, duo, and trioformats and with groups of various sizes; he's composed film soundtracks, ledbands with the likes of Ornette Coleman, made a variety of guest appearances, and toured all over the world. Yet it's with his own Pat Metheny Group, anoutfit that he and keyboardist Lyle Mays began some 25 years ago, that he hasmade much of his arguably best and certainly most popular music. So it is, then, that any Metheny Group concert recording is a welcome addition to his catalog.Read more

How bad were the 1980s in music? Not even jazz great Miles Davis couldescape the black hole. The decade that saw synthesizers and slick approachesruin pop music somehow caught the master trumpet player's ear and resulted inone of Davis's poorest periods. Of course, Davis was lucky to even be aliveduring the '80s, surviving sickness and drug abuse, and this hour-longperformance, shot during the 1985 Montreal Jazz Festival, shows a performerlooking happy just to be playing. Appearing thin and sickly, Davis and his six-piece fusion outfit run through six tunes, none coming close to the trumpetplayer's past experimental achievements. Songs like "One Phone Call" are long, metallic funk jams that nonetheless give Davis plenty of room to maneuver inspirited solos, when the rhythm section and keyboards aren't drowning him out.Davis also reinvents pop hits of the era--ballads like Michael Jackson's "HumanNature" (from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my man!
this is the miles that i remember.i was a high school student when miles davis recorded "bitches brew".it was a hippie period still - drugs, psychedelia and rock & roll.black peoples's music in that scene was foremost represented - IMHO -by the father, james brown, jimi hendrix, sly stone, chambers bros, some funkadelic and, of course, motown's representatives ala stevie wonder, the jackson 5, marvin gaye, miss diana ross, of course. etcetera.there were still soul groups around and, of course, the blues (b.b. king reigned!! - playing the fillmores, etc.)jazz had been eclipsed by the british invasion and the subsequent white longhairs.then, again, came miles davis!out of the kingdom of jazz, a re-born pheonix bringing the sun! heat??why, of course!what was hot for some; uncomfortable and hard to accept was for others, the great nourishment of the sun itself, with-its-vitaminD-as-in-"Davis"!here is miles davis in montreal, at least a decade after his born-again period, still burning!!!thank you, miles davis...

in the summer of '85 , those who were lucky enough witnessed miles & co. transform the stage of the theatre st. denis into downtown manhattan , so electrifying was the vibe they created . yes , i was at this concert and it was one of the best montreal jazz fest shows that i've been to ; as usual , the good folks at spectel video captured the essence of that vibe in splendid fashion ; i've seen miles in concert four times and this is still my favorite performance of his ; i've seen john scofield live several times and , wow , was he " on " that evening ; well done ! ... For over five decades, trumpeter/bandleader Miles Davis (1926-91) was amajor innovator of cool, modal, avant-garde, and fusion jazz styles. Thisvideo captures Davis's last working band: alto saxophonist/flutist KennyGarrett, drummer Ricky Wellman, percussionist John Bingham, keyboardist Kei Akagi, bassist Benjamin Rietveld, and lead bassist Foley McCreary, live atthe 10th Annual Paris Jazz Festival on November 3, 1989. With thesemusicians' sympathetic and syncopated support, Davis's trademarkedHarmon-muted trumpet tones dance and trance over the combo's supple electric swing. The Michael Jackson hit "Human Nature" is reworked by Davis andcompany into an up-tempo workout, capped by Garrett's stirring solo; Davis'sslow and sexy "New Blues" harks back to the down-home music of hisyouth. 3-0 out of 5 stars DON'T get this UNTIL you get live in Munich & Montreal!
(This is - in part - an open letter to the makers of this DVD)4-0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories
Miles was my climax for years on the Nothe Sea Jazz festival. He was the only one who could get a perfect sound in the hall.(with two stages) The atmosphere on the DVD is the same as I saw him live. One minor on the DVD is the interruption of some fine tunes with short interviews with Miles. For the rest...buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Miles' Better Bands
I saw this band perform at Avery Fischer Hall and it was a very memorable performance. Some (like Wynton) like to dismiss Miles' work from this period, but I think some of the live work from Miles' latter period is very interesting to listen to. The improvision is there and the band members all have something to say. They fooled around w/ the song structure and certainly displayed quite a bit of chemistry. This video provides a nice document of one of Miles' better bands. ... Read more

Due for DVD treatment!!This is an incredibly funky set of cookin' numbers.Shot in black and white, this is a visual enhancement to the album, which holds up to repeated veiwing.McCann and the late, great Eddie Harris are in fine form in this extremely influential concert.5-0 out of 5 stars Swiss Movement
A visual documentation of perhaps one of the greatest festival jam sessions. After having every note of the album permanently etched into my brain, new insite was added being able to watch Les, Eddie, Benny, Donald, and Leroy play.Even though it is missing one song from the album, the extra footage of non album tracks definitely makes up for it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Zero stars for the horrible Joe Suddler
When I hear musicians this incapable, I wonder why they would bother.I have to wonder if they have considered suicide at any point of their apparently musically meaningless lives.Joe Sudler is a sad excuse for a musician, and the list of no-name musicians in his band should be executed for being such an odious melange of arrogance and sheer stupidity. These "musicians" should be beaten to death with their own instruments. It is a disgrace that a musician like Phil Woods would have to live with pictures and audio recordings of this horrible date.If I were rich, I'd buy the rights to this, and destroy the master tapes in the name of music.

1-0 out of 5 stars Phil is Great, this video isn't.
I have this video and it is a big disappointment. The leader of the band gets lost twice. It would be laughable, but one of the greatest sax players ever is standing there. The rhythm section nearly turns the time around half a dozen times in every song.A real nightmare, this band is really bad. These guys are amatures.I've never heard of any of them.Audio quality is not very good either.

I really enjoyed this video. Having viewed the VHS performance "Rich At The Top", I eagerly awaited to view this version of West Side Story & Time Check. I wasn't disappointed.5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy Rich- Live at the '82 Montreal Jazz Fest- WOW
The box say's "Buddy and his Band at the height of their popularity"This is a MUST see video for fans of Buddy and jazz. The sound on this is top notch and of course Buddy is at his best, he wouldn't allow any less. The highlight {if you can get any better than the best} has to be the extended solo in Buddy's signature piece "West Side Story " medly. Again the sound is right on, you can almost feel his intensity, and at the same time his grace.5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy at his best. Even at 65!
If you're a Buddy Rich fan, this video is a must-have.Not only do you get to witness his unbelieveable drumming, but there's a short episode of his temper as well.At the end of Bob Mintzer's "Good News", there is one short instant where the brass didn't quite play a note exactlytogether. Buddy smirks for a second, pauses before the last chord, andclearly says "what happened? ". He then cues the last chord, after which he continues to humiliate the trumpet section with more wordsand gestures.Aside from that distraction, the band is smokin' and thesoloists (including saxists Andy Fusco, Walt Weiskopf, Steve Marcus) areespecially strong. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Before watching this DVD I had never heard of Gal Costa. What a pleasant surprise to see her perform.Antonio himself appears in this one for Luiza and Wave: very nice.I couldn't appreciate John Henricks performance, too much scatting and not very good. That's just my opinion.Gonzalo Rubalcaba didn't impress me either. For me, the real standout performance was by Gal Costa. She does very cool A Felicidade with Herbie; and then an amazing So Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce. Also, Herbie is an amazing keyboard player. It is as though the instrument is part of him.Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!Brazilian Star-Studded Music w/the Master (A.C.Jobim)
It was a great honor to see this event on DVD.This event is a post-cardio-problem concert of Mr. Jobim. He still held his hands steadily and played beautifully while entertaining us for a short while during the tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. He played remarkably well and one could see that he was trying to maintain his haltar on his side rib/chest area.[I remembered in 1990 he had suffered a heart attack and his concert was in jeopardy of being cancelled; however, he tended to the all-star gala in 1991!I was preparing to see him.]4-0 out of 5 stars Not another All-Star Tribute?
If you're wary of the typical "all-star tribute"--the protracted, over-the-top, star-studded, greatest hits extravaganza that manages to leave you unable to watch another minute but somehow still hungry for more--you owe it to yourself to set aside your misgivings and experience this concert. Although you will hear some of Jobim's greatest hits, you'll also be treated to a few not-so-well-known songs that deserve to be better known, like "Olha Maria," performed solo by pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and "Luiza," performed by Tom Jobim himself, who takes the stage mid-concert with no introduction. In fact, his entrance pretty much sums up the unassuming, sophisticated style that made Jobim and his music so special--he simply walks out, greets the band and the audience, sits down at the piano, and plays and sings. Marred only by careless film editing that sometimes shows close-ups of musicians obviously playing something other than what you're hearing, this program is a beautiful, bittersweet "good-bye" to Jobim, who continues to leave us hungry for more. ... Editorial Review

Between 1965 and 1973, a year before his death, Duke Ellington created three concerts of sacred music, large-scale works that incorporated dancers, choruses, and gospel singers in addition to his own band. Describing these efforts as "the most important thing I have ever done," he said they allowed him to "say openly what I have been saying on my knees." As far as this 1998 version is concerned, well, since the subject is sacred music, perhaps some sacred language (i.e., Latin) is appropriate: Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The whole package BUT...
This DVD has the whole package going for it. The music was very well recorded. (I wont get into the technical aspects of it.) The picture looked great as well...but, and I hate to admit this being a music lover and an Ellington music lover, the Dukes music was good but the film was really boring to me. It wasnt just the religious aspect of the film either-I think I might have been bored to tears anyway. (Apologies to all those religious folks out there.) I found myself listening to the instrumentals and the introductions and moving on. 4-0 out of 5 stars music goes on a life of its own even after its creator(s)'s
people gripe about this release with(out) reason. and it's their right. however, it's unfair not only to the musicianship of all those associated with this performance but also to ellington himself to lower this work. indeed, isn't the dream of any music-maker to create music that lives forever, or at least beyond the confines of the creator's own life? no one has a problem with those cd's titled beethoven...
1-0 out of 5 stars No Duke Here
This Image Entertainment DVD is a fraud. No Duke Ellington. No Duke Ellington Orchestra. Not one of his great sidemen.Just a mediocre European big band, an embarrassing European choir and four American soloists--none of whom had any association with Duke.Don't believe any of the hype that comes with it. ... Editorial Review

The Japanese might not know exactly what "jump, jive, an' wail" means, but they know how to rock--and so does Brian Setzer, who does just thatthroughout this 20-song, 85-minute concert, filmed in Tokyo during his 2001tour. The former Stray Cat guitarist-singer and his 17-piece, horn-heavyorchestra's big band swing-meets-rockabilly sound is dynamic and exciting--justcheck out the audience, which goes absolutely bonkers from the first note. Wehear plenty of virtuoso soloing by Setzer (who also performs in trio and solosettings) on tunes ranging from standards like "In the Mood" to Stray Catsfavorites like "Rock This Town." But it's more than a one-man deal; the band'sonstage antics make this a fun show to both watch and listen to. DVD bonusfeatures include a brief tour documentary, while two songs ("Caravan" and"Sleepwalk") can be viewed from different angles using your DVD remote. Let'srock, y'all! Read more

Trumpeter-bandleader Miles Davis (1926-91) helped create the cool, modal, avant-garde, and fusion jazz styles of the modern era, and rarely lookedback. But on one fateful night at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 8, 1991, Davis did look back and performed the legendary music hemade in the '40s and '50s with his collaborator Gil Evans, who died in 1988. Backed by the combined Gil Evans and George Gruntz orchestras, and conducted by Grammy-winning producer Quincy Jones, Davis shares the spotlightwith alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett and trumpeter Wallace Roney, who backsup Davis on the tricky melodic passages. Playing with a sound made heartbreakingby the chronic ailments that would soon end his life, Davis breathes new life into "Boplicity," from the bop/classical-tinged Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A night of magic from two music masters
I've said it before and will say it again. There will never be anyone like Miles Davis. His sound. His style. His incredible trumpet playing. His enormous body of work spanning decades. And lets not forget his look. What an intense presence.4-0 out of 5 stars Miles' tribute to Gil: music that speaks louder than words!
For this concert, Quincy Jones somehow prodded a reluctant Miles Davis torevisit a selection of classic Gil Evans arrangements that Davis and Evansoriginally recorded in the 1950s (the classic albums MILES AHEAD, PORGY& BESS, and SKETCHES SPAIN), but hadn't touched at all since (or insome instances were last played at his May 19, 1961 Carnegie Hall concert).5-0 out of 5 stars a must have video
this is the kind of event that is a must.two musically pioneers together.and what's so great about it is that quincy jones is conducting older material that miles vowed not to do anymore.it was also atriumph.hearing the genius of miles is always a treat.i miss his genius buthis work will live on to the end of all time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive Krall
You could argue that Diana Krall is not a fantastic singer, but she does what she does oh so exceptionally well, which is why she has such a huge fan base. The voice is unique, instantly recognisable and possessed of that essential characteristic of the jazz vocalist - superb timing. This is particularly in evidence in this live performance. She has the delay technique down to perfection, and uses it in a hugely expressive way.Speaking as a professional musician, and a singer, I find her wonderful sultry, husky growl addictive, to say nothing of her stunning musicianship, playing and improvising skills. This DVD is magic - you couldn't find better in its genre than her inspired interpretation of Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You'. I'll listen to this performance for the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeeet!
A very special DVD of a very special Lady. The camera work and musicians, along with the scenes of Paris are excellent. If you like Jazz, you need this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Performances by All
I really bought this DVD to see Anthony Wilson play, even though I have heard Diana, I wasn't moved to buy any of her CD's.I am now.The swinging, up-tempo tunes swung hard and the ballads were...well, beautiful.Anthony and his blonde Byrdland just kills it with tone, taste, and hyper-swing.All the musicians are world class players and none disappointed, all can REALLY jam.Usually I'll buy a DVD and have my finger on the search or fast forward button, replaying the "good" parts.Almost all of this is the "good parts".Maybe just a little of it made me want to ride the elevator when the violins came in, but over all this is one of the best DVD's that I've ever bought. If you are a musician like I am, you need to own this one. ...
