Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY is this film NOT on DVD!!!???
I'm very pleased to see a flurry of 'new'/er reviews of this film.I only hope the DVD gods take notice!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A film no fan of comedy should miss
This touching, sly, hilarious comedy with understated performances should be on DVD. Walter Matthau's transformation from a vain, self-absorbed product of inherited wealth into a caring human being is brilliantly written and played. Elaine May's klutzy, endearing, naive Henrietta is one of the loveliest of screen portrayals. This film is a true classic, under-seen and under-appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exemplary undertaking
My predecessors in reviewing this movie have done a great job of detailing it's highlights... I cannot advance their descriptions and their accolades any farther than they have done.I will, however, add that this is one of those movies that when you see it on cable at 3 am, you will not be able to turn it off. After you watched it and failed to find the title you will canvas your friends to try to find out the name of the movie... when noone knows what you're talking about, go to your secretary who will google the actor and the story line and come up with the name of the movie and you try to find the dvd and it won't exist...then you vainly try to find the title anywhere and it comes up on vhs. BUY IT because if you don't you will certainly wish you had. I have a brand new vhs player sitting in my attic in the box so that in the future, when the vhs player is no longer available and the studio wonks refuse to put classics on dvd, I will still be able to play these movies like "New Leaf" that aren't on DVD. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars MEN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Another bizarre entry in the Coen Brothers arsenal, O BROTHER is a thoroughly entertaining if somewhat unusual film. The story focuses on three prison escapees who are going to Mississippi to collect the 1.2 million dollars supposedly hidden there.Based on Homer's ODYSSEY, the film involves our three heroes/stooges in some unusual adventures, all leading to a lot of twists in its looney conclusion. What makes it work is the spirited performances of George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as the escapees; the charming bluegrass music including the surprise smash hit I AM A MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW and some nice bits from supporting players John Goodman and Holly Hunter. It has some Three Stooges touches, and is filmed quite beautifully. All in all, a weird but enjoyable comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Cow !
About two years ago I was in a thrift store checking out the good stuff, as I was heading out I walked past a TV set that was playing "O Brother, Where Art Thou".I was stopped in my tracks and stood there for half an hour just mesmerized while watching the video. Talk about totally different and totally enjoyable, I couldn't belive it, it reminded me of a time in the 1940s while living in South Carolina. I returned the next day and bought the video. Now I have the concert "Down From the Mountain"

Editorial Review

During its release, this was the most popular film of all time in its native Italy. A typical Roberto Benigni comedy of mistaken identity, this 1991 work stars the actor-director in two roles, one a tough mafioso named Toothpick and the other a meek bus driver who is the gangster's look-alike. When the bad guy's girlfriend comes on to the clueless innocent--and she brings him along to her Sicilian villa--the slapstick madness rolls into high gear. Benigni really is a very funny and often remarkable clown, and he employs his usual physical gags in great and gratifying abundance. His script's inspiration reaches several peak moments when the mysteries between light and dark doppelgangers are suggested. One could reasonably call this sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde tale the closest Benigni has yet come to making his version of Jerry Lewis's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucy in Her Funniest Movie
Two years before I LOVE LUCY debuted on television, Lucille Ball starred in this hilarious movie opposite William Holden as a hopelessly incompetent secretary who is quite oblivious that the real estate office she works at is just a front for a bookie.Lucy was starring in the popular radio comedy MY FAVORITE HUSBAND at the time and she had made a number of successful comedy films, notably AFFAIRS OF ANNABEL and EASY TO WED, but she never had as good a showcase for her wacky innocence before like MISS GRANT.Alas, the video is now out of print and no DVD appears on the horizon but hopefully the movie will resurface. And let's hope Columbia uses a better print than they did for the video release, this one has several scratchy scenes of mediocre quality yet I am still satisfied for the chance at seeing this extraordinary comedienne in full bloom and on the eve of something really historic.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 maybe
Lucille Ball stars as an inept secretary who is hired to work as the receptionist at a crooked real estate company -- this gal's so dumb she couldn't possibly figure out what the real racket is, think the thugs. However, her character has hidden talents, not the least of which is the ability to win a man's heart. (The man in question being William Holden, who's running the bookie joint behind closed doors.)A slight, but enjoyable screwball comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wm. Holden in Lucille Ball's funniest pre-I Love Lucy movie
If you were wondering why big Hollywood star William Holden showed up on a classic episode of "I Love Lucy," the answer would be this 1949 film.Lucille Ball plays secretary Ellen Grant, who is hired by a bookie gang headed by Dick Richmond, played by Holden, with the Civil War serving to set up the cute title.Miss Grant is supposedly less than bright and so the idea is she will serve as an innocent front for their real-estate office, while the real business happens in the back. The problem is that Miss Grant is not as dumb as she looks and she becomes quite concerned about the homeless. The next thing Dick knows he is promoting a low-cost housing project.Of course Dick and his cronies play with the books and steal all the money, leaving Miss Grant to take the rap. This farce is a perfect vehicle for Lucy and Holden, who had been making mostly westerns, shows he can do light comedy.Directed by Lloyd Bacon, a lot of the credit for "Miss Grant Takes Richmond" belongs to the writers, Nat Perrin, Devery Freeman and Frank Tashman who keep everybody loaded with crisp dialogue and flip remarks.Lucy also has some physical comedy gags involving construction equipment and mud. This might not be a great comedy but I certainly do not see much wrong with it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie for kids 6 and above !! The cat and dog are great!
Great movie for kids; the cat (Mrs. Murphy) and the dog are great. My 6 1/2 year old daughter loved it!!! Good Disney Fun!

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and a Big Disappointment
I am a huge fan of Rita Mae Brown's "Mrs. Murphy" mysteries, so I was understandably excited to watch this movie.Unfortunately, the producers of the film changed many of the characters personalities. Some of the changes were minor (Blair Bainbridge was a doctor, not a model; and Susan Tucker now owns a cafe) but some were unforgivable in that they changed the character's basic nature and made them so shallow they were one-dimensional.Considering that Rita Mae Brown's greatest strength as a storyteller is her in-depth characters, this simplifying them was really quite insulting. For example, Cynthia Cooper was somehow morphed from a tall blonde to a short black woman whose main purpose in the film was to serve as a comic counterpoint to Rick Shaw -- who lost his moustache and was changed into a stereotype of a bumbling county sheriff. This was not the fault of the actor, who tried his level best with what the writers gave him and by sheer willpower rescues any dignity Rick had left after the writers were done with him.
1-0 out of 5 stars Why, oh why . . .
The fact that this movie has a nice cast just can't save it from the usual Hollywood stupidity. They started with a perfectly good story, written by Rita Mae Brown and as part of her Mrs. Murphy mystery series, and changed it almost beyond total recognition. These books are not great mysteries, but they are always charming, full of great character development, and quick to read. The changes made in translating the story from the book to the screen were totally unnecessary, and especially jolting when you consider how many people have actually read the books. Why the producers felt they had to change the story, change the characters and their backgrounds, and many other things is beyond comprehension. This sort of thing should not happen, but it does much too often. When will Hollywood learn to listen to people who watch their movies? ... Frank Capra made this film in 1941 before he went off to make films for America's war effort, but it wasn't released until 1944. Adapted from the hit play by Joseph Kesselring, this frantic black comedy shows Capra at his best as a master of mood and timing. Actresses Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprise their Broadway performances as two gentle old ladies who poison men with elderberry wine to put them out of their misery. Cary Grant plays one nephew, a normal guy who just gets wind of their little hobby and tries to get them to stop, while Raymond Massey plays another, a villain just escaped from jail. Capra encourages the cast, especially Grant, to give a somewhat more outsized performance than one might expect. But made during the war years as it was, this overstated comic approach to killing was probably cathartic. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE funniest movie of all time!!
No matter how many times I see this, I laugh as if it were the first!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Old-fashioned Bellylaugh
I just loved this movie. It was fun watching the usually suave Cary Grant become befuddled and half crazed when he discovers his two dear sweet old aunts have been very, very naughty. Between "Teddy Roosevelt" charging up the stairs blowing his bugle and digging the Panama Canal in the basement....his evil cousin (Raymond Massey) and his evil cousin's sidekick, Dr. Einstein (played by Peter Lorre) you almost overlook the elderberry wine - but take my word for it...you shouldn't. ;-)
5-0 out of 5 stars Capra's horror comedy
It was very unusual for famed director Frank Capra to adapt a hit Broadway play into a motion picture.Yet that's exactly what he did in 1941 with the long-running play "Arsenic and Old Lace."However, Warner Brothers had an agreement not to release the film until the play completed its very long run and that didn't happen until 1944, by which time Capra had left Hollywood for wartime service (making outstanding documentaries for the U.S. government).

Audrey Hepburn was never more sleek and glamorous than in this delightful romantic caper costarring Peter O'Toole and directed by William Wyler. She's the chic daughter of a renowned art collector and covert forger (the always eccentric Hugh Griffith) who's deposited his best work, a famous statue, in a Paris museum. Trouble is, technology can now detect such forgery, so Hepburn plots to steal the statue with the help of O'Toole, an amateur thief and covert inspector. Of course, neither of them knows the whole truth about the other. They make an utterly charming couple, with O'Toole stealing the show in an uncharacteristically lighthearted turn. Read more

Great movie with an interesting plot.Audrey again, is great...
5-0 out of 5 stars How To Steal A MIllion
I adore this film. It's so cute, and O'Toole and Hepburn gives hilarious performances. It's all about a young girl {Hepburn} who's father's best talent is forging art by the masters. He sells a forged statue for a million dollars to a museum in Paris, and Audrey decides to steal it back before her father is found out, with a little help from thief Peter O'Toole, not knowing that he's really a private eye in fake art! It's so funny, and you'll be laughing from beginning to end. It's directed very stylishly, but if you take the film seriously,it won't be any fun. You just have to sit back and think of nothing and watch it. The bio on the DVD about Audrey is a nice little film for Audrey collectors, and the ability to flip to scene to scene is really swell. I give this film 5 stars. You're sure to love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I think that this is the best Pink Panther film that I've seen. Although I've only seen this one, A Shot In The Dark, and The Pink Panther {2006}. This film has incredible slapstick comedy by Peter Sellers. Starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, David Niven as Sir Charles Lytton, Robert Wagner as George Lytton, Capucine as Simone Clouseau, Brenda De Banzie as Angela Dunning, Colin Gordon as Tucker,Claudia Cardinale as Princess Dala, and The Pink Panther as himself. I can't wait to see the other ones. Well, that was my review.

Blake Edwards' THE PINK PANTHER has held up well over the years. It is, of course, the start of one of the funniest and most popular comedy series of all time. However, while the subsequent films focus on the antics of bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers), Clouseau is almost a supporting character in this film. Most of the focus is placed on Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), an irresistible middle-aged bachelor who is secretly "The Phantom", a world-famous jewel thief. He decides to steal the Pink Panther diamond, the most valuable jewel in all the world.

Neil Simon wrote this 1976 spoof in which virtually every famous fictional detective of the 1930s and 1940s congregate at the home of a mysterious fellow (Truman Capote) to try and solve the mystery of who's trying to kill them all. Simon's jokes are mostly obvious, and the film's real appeal is the clever concept matched with fine--sometimes legendary--actors. Peter Falk plays a very Bogart-like Sam Spade equivalent, James Coco is a Hercule Poirot wannabe, Peter Sellers does a Charlie Chan bit, David Niven and Maggie Smith are reflections of Nick and Nora.... You get the picture. Lighthearted and silly, this is cotton-candy comedy for the cast as well as viewers. Read more

With it seems less and less worth watching on television, my wife and I can always count on many a good laugh when watching this outstanding classic.Funny without having to be vulgar, this movie should be in everyones collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe anything you see or hear
"Murder by Death" is a delightful and loving tribute/criticism about murder mysteries in the mid-20th century. Bringing together the characters from many famous series--Sam Spade, the Charleses, Miss Marple, Charlie Chan, etc.--and having them played by some of the great actors of the period--Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, David Niven, Elsa Lancaster, etc.--produced an enjoyable story. The twist after twist after twist amuses right to the end. My only concern is that, once one realizes that nothing is as it seems, a bit of the "suspense" is lost and replaced by waiting for the next layer to be peeled off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Neil Simon!!!!
I have loved this movie from the very first moment I saw it for a number of reasons.Firsta very well-written spoof of murder mysteries with some top-notch jokes and some not so top-notch jokes. But when you look at the whole you are very pleasantly surprised and you will enjoy this project over and over again.

This movie has it all, especially for baby boomers of the early 1970's. Blethyn, as a betrayed widow is priceless and Nigel Ferguson as her pot smoking gardener steals the movie with his characteristic good humor and good looks. The English scenery is charming and Blethyn's loyal village friends top off the movie's touching humor and happy ending. I have given this DVD as Christmas gifts and my friends have loved it too. This is a truly funny movie. The main character is so out of her element that it is totally belivable how ridiculous she is. This is one of those movies that you buy and come back to watch and invite your friends over for movie night. It's a good buy for your DVD collection

5-0 out of 5 stars A must see
This is a must see movie for lovers of British comedy. This movie had me in stitches. In short, the plot of the movie is about a widow trying to raise money to pay off the debt her husband left her. How does she go about the task? By growing pot. Lots of laughs to be had. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Where's the money. Lebowski?" - "It's uh... uh... it's down there somewhere, let me take another look. "
I won't add to the voluminous praise that already exists in abundance on Amazon that speaks so eloquently of this film.I agree totally with everything written here stemming from a positive vibe, man. This is one of my favorite movies.Certainly my favorite Coen Brothers movie in their comedic body of work, even bypassing "Raisng Arizona" (which I think is a masterpiece as well).
1-0 out of 5 stars The only good part of this movie is when...
...Tara Reid offers a certain favor for a thousand dollars. Other than that, it's a typical Coen Brothers "Look-we're-being-clever" affair. And yet the laughs are few and the "zaniness" rings hollow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
The main character, Lebowski, is a bum of a person living in Los Angeles who spends most of his time either doing nothing or bowling with characters played by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. Suddenly Lebowski's life is changed when he is mistaken for another Lebowski who is much wealthier than he and who as gotten involved with a group of unsavory characters.

Editorial Review

Joseph Mankiewicz's brightly stylized film of Frank Loesser's classic musical (based on the stories of Damon Runyon) casts the criminal underworld as a harmless fantasy in this whimsical vision of the Big Apple. Nonsingers Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons acquit themselves fine in the lead roles as high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson and Salvation Army missionary Sarah Brown. It's odd casting, to say the least. Frank Sinatra, who plays the good old reliable Nathan Detroit (who runs "the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York") is left with novelty tunes while husky Brando delivers the love songs and hits, including "Luck Be a Lady." But in the context of the colorful dialogue and comically affected speech patterns (a giddy gangster-speak straight out of Runyon's breezy stories) the song performances aren't the least out of place. Stubby Kaye, reprising his role as Nicely Nicely from the Broadway run, practically steals the show in his few scenes and his show-stopping solo "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." The film is overlong at two and a half hours and somewhat stagily confined in the stylized, studio-bound sets--perhaps the mark of a director who had never helmed a musical before--but a terrific cast of eccentrics and Michael Kidd's high-energy choreography gives the film a memorable and enchanting character. 5-0 out of 5 stars Shoud Be On DVD
A very funny movie for the whole family and I'm wondering when it will be available on DVD...also, The Fuller Brush Girl with Lucille Ball...it would be great to have that on DVD,too.Warning:VHS tapes eventually become noisy with static and are a big waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest movie I have ever seen!
My brother, sister, and I became big fans of Red Skelton when we found and bought some tapes at the store. My brother and I also remembered Red in some TV specials when we were kids during the 1980's. Someone told us about the movie "The Fuller Brush Man" and how funny it was.We found it here on Amazon. When we watched the movie, we were rolling on the floor. We were laughing so hard. What is really amazing is that the whole movie is clean!!Red Skelton is the best comedian there ever was and ever will be!!!Why don't they still produce this movie? We bought ours brand new not to long ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilariously funny
The Fuller Brush man is a hilarious slapstick comedy about Red Jones, Who just can't seem to keep a steady job. After several failed attempts which all end in comedic disaster, his girlfriend pulls him a plug to sell fuller brushes. The rest is history. Red gets caught up in a murder mystery, chased by police, and locked up in a warehouse, and all he wanted to do was sell fuller brushes. This movie is a gem, though sometimes the dialogue is slightly thin... slapstick, however, with all its grace and beauty, makes up for what the dialogue lacks. I highly recommend it. ... Read more
