Editorial Review

Terrence McNally adapted his Broadway farce for this wild, headlong comedy set in one of the gay bathhouses that were once a staple of New York culture. Jack Weston plays a guy who makes the mistake of crossing his gangster brother-in-law. Fearing for his life, he hides in the gay baths and the door-slamming chaos begins. Directed by Richard Lester, the comedy is adept and well handled, with Weston watching his back while trying to pass as a regular customer. It's hard to tell which is funnier: Treat Williams as an undercover cop with a falsetto voice or Rita Moreno as the baths' supremely untalented--and even more supremely self-confident--singer, Googie Gomez. Her performances alone make this movie worth watching. Read more

This movie holds great memories for me,but trying to get a version on DVD seems nigh impossible ! A great blast from the past Rita Moreno steals the show for me a huge giggle !!! PS please distributors how soon for this on DVD ???

5-0 out of 5 stars Camp on! Camp on!
Not at all politically correct, but absolutely hysterical.Sometimes gross and over the top humor as in the original version of the Producers.I watch this comedy at least once a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, funny
This and the original M.A.S.H film had me rolling on the floor with laughter. It has a lot in common with classic theater farces (Goldsmith, Wilde, et al.) but takes the genre right over the top.How Rita Moreno didn't win another Oscar for this one, I don't know.Everyone I've shown it to--the girl friend, Mom, the neighbors--loved it.Not a mean-spirited moment in the whole show. An all-star cast, perfectly cast. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Talk about dated: This limp 1976 comedy, based on a flop Broadway play, deals with a pair of middle-aged African-American parents (Redd Foxx and Pearl Bailey), who are aghast to discover that their window-dresser son (Michael Warren) is gay and are ready to disown him for it. Though it's still a viable subject, it's treated here with a smirky sense that homosexuality is some kind of dirty joke. What's interesting is that, years later, the most sympathetic character is the son's stereotypically swishy boyfriend (Dennis Dugan). Shot on video and transferred to film, the movie is most noteworthy for the opportunity to see the late Pearl Bailey (if only in the final 20 minutes) and to watch the late Redd Foxx (in reality a hilariously filthy stand-up) in a sterilized PG setting. Foxx, at the height of his Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great movie for the time period
I enjoyed so much Norman, is that you? The culture of 1976 - clothes, home furnishings, language, it brought back so many memories. I was delighted to see that even though the movie was made in 1976 the lingo they used and subject matter is totally relevant today. I was amazed. It was a movie ahead of its time, no doubt. It was tongue and cheek and great one liners. It was great to see the great Pearl Bailey with Redd Foxx. It was a cute movie that i show quite often now to friends who haven't seen it or even heard of it. I really wish it would come out on DVD. I don't know how much longer my VHS tape will hold out. I really do recommend it.

Nowhere is, director/screenwriter, Gregg Araki's 1997 conclusion to his nicknamed "Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy". Araki, himself, has asserted that the feature is, "a Beverly Hills 90210 episode on acid." Alas, critics and moviegoers weren't that keen on seeing Araki's extremely frank representation of urban teenagers; critics wrote it off as vile as well as lackluster and the audience just wasn't there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie !!!
A very tender movie full of wonderful images and good performances...it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I highly recommend it . Besides, it deals with a controversial issue successfully without falling into stereotypes or predictive situations. It is a real "must see".

One of the best movies I have seen!!! The subject itself forces you to look at your own limitations on anything that is out of your 'normal' boundaries. After watching this movie, you have a better insight on how limited most of us are and how this causes a lot more harm than we think it does.

Never heard of this movie. Some of my favorites never got any press. Silly, not preachy, low budget, but good production quality. Everyone but the Religious Right should like this film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Certainly is a 'hoot'
The first word that comes to mind after watching this movie is 'bizarre', but in a realistic way. The characters are not that far fetched, especially where I live. I laughed until I cried! Also, there hasn't been a transvestite played so well since Tootsie, and I think this surpassed Dustin Hoffman's cross dressing character. The actors and actresses took their roles in this film and ran with them! Bravo!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Touching Comedy . . .
The murder of a male model in a gay, beachfront enclave of L.A. warrants an undercover investigation, so police officer Benson (Ryan O'Neal), a straight, macho, law-and-order type, is assigned to partner with file clerk Kerwin (John Hurt), a mild-mannered homosexual. Benson and Kerwin are to pose as a gay couple who have just moved to the area. At first, Benson's slovenly ways drive the fussy Kerwin to distraction, while Kerwin's sexual orientation and prissy manners are a source of constant frustration for straight arrow Benson. However, the two eventually become friendly roommates, if not exactly friends, and Benson even begins to see the world through Kerwin's eyes. Although he carries a badge, the fussy Kerwin is essentially a civilian, but as he and Benson close in on the murderer, Kerwin reveals himself to be a far more capable cop than Benson assumes him to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comedy
I originally rented the movie in the 1980s.I tried purchasing it recently, but was only able to find it used in a few places on-line, and only in a VHS format.I wish that it would be available in DVD format.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very dated for this day and age...
The movie handled this touchy topic well enough for it's time period, but now it feels very dated. There are some nice moments, such as when the straight cop finds out what it's like to be on the other end of the prejudice spectrum, from the inside. However, it really annoyed me that all the gay charactes were portrayed as complete stereotypes: drama queen or leather daddy. There seems to be nothing in between. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars At least Divine wasn't a scientologist
I saw this movies the other night on one of the cable channels. I was very suprised since I'd seen "Pink Flamingos" years ago so I know why you don't see the early works of John Waters on T.V. too often. Divine gave a great performance. Watching I got the feeling he really thought he was a hot young woman. Also the bizzare seen of Female Divine having sex with the sleazy guy also played by Divine. You have to remember this movie was made in 1974 long before cross-dressing and the Queer lifestyle were hip--this was a very dangerous occupation! John Waters without a doubt gave cinema something very original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't you see?!Don't you ENVY me?!
Divine's star rises to exagerrated proportions in this one! While Pink Flamingos shocks and awes by it's incredibly anal scenes (in more ways than one), this one shocks by it's incredibly bizarre storyline and script that Divine vainly utters all the time!
4-0 out of 5 stars Simply Divine
It's Divine at her best. One is left wondering where they come up with the actors to play the parts, yet frightening to give it too much thought. No one else could pull-off the role of Dawn Davenport, crime model and loving mother, like Divine. And it is simply Divine right up to the execution. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Trip ...............................................to Hell
I was majorly disappointed in this mega award winning film. I give it a generous 2 stars because the actors were good and portrayed their characters very well. Photography was also good as was sound quality. None of this means a thing to me as the whole movie was stupid. This COULD HAVE BEEN a great film but the story was majorly lacking. The love story was good but you see very little of it in the whole film. Most of it revolves AROUND the story at what took place when the two were broken up. "The Trip" sequence was the best part of the whole thing, but very short and by this time, the two characters were doomed to never be together except for only a couple days when all was lost. If you're looking for something with a happy ending, this is not even close! In fact if you're looking for something with a happy middle, you will be disappointed with this one. The only real accomplishment to this film is the fact that a plant survived all the way through the 11 years spanned by this meaningless, very poorly written tale. (most likely to die in the deserts of Mexico). It is a chaotic, weird tale of the 70's radical gay demonstration era which praises drug addiction, hippies, yuppies and irresponsible sexual endulgence. It is a flaming queen kind of production and if you are anywhere near mainstream, I suspect you will, as I did, find it repulsive and just way too far out there! It is such portrayals of the gay lifestyle as this, which makes society in general hate all gays. I think there are a WHOLE LOT BETTER avenues for gay film making than this film could ever dream of. Perhaps if you have a widescreen television you will be able to see the whole picture or even read half the credits which are cut off on both sides of the screen for some unexplained reason. Very poor film making. I couldn't have been more disappointed. My recommendation is to pass on this one. There are plenty of good films out there to spend your money on. This isn't it. I had high hopes all thoughout "THE TRIP", that things would finally warm up and start going somewhere. It didn't. If you watch this one, I hope you get more out of it than I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must see movie
Thought it was a fantastic, fun and very emotional movie. The best movie I have seen since Brokeback. It will grab you in the first 2 minutes and you are in for the ride then. A side note I loved the fact that the AIDS epidemic was there in subtext but not slapping you in the face every scene.

4-0 out of 5 stars Endlesss Love
I really enjoyed this movie. You knew what was gong to happen, no real surprises but kept my attention. It was a sad drama but had some funny parts as well, fitted into the movie at just the right times.

Australia has no shortage of he-man actors. Tops on anybody's list would be Russell Crowe and bluff, burly Jack Thompson, neither of whom looks completely at ease without a pint of lager in his hand. Thus it's a brilliant touch to cast them together in a gay comedy--Crowe as an uncloseted young man looking for love, Thompson as his open-minded straight father, who's so eager to help his son find Mr. Right, he's actually a bit of an annoyance. The 1995 movie betrays its stage origins, especially when the characters turn to the camera to deliver conversational asides. And the one-joke premise of Thompson's unflagging enthusiasm for his son's sex life becomes almost as tiresome for the viewer as it does for the son. But it's an innocuous enough little movie, and the two actors bring their gruff likability into every scene. In retrospect, Crowe's future stardom looks blindingly obvious. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, funny feel-good gay romantic comedy
Other have correctly sung the praises of this delightful comedy that is both well-directed and well-written and has two adorable leads (Christian Campbell as Gabe and J.P. Pitoc as Mark). So, I'll focus on the absolutely powerhouse supporting actors. Clinton Leupp (aka Coco Peru) is sensational and literally steals the film with her two appearances (first lip syncing to a danced-up I AM WOMAN remix and then delivering a 7-minute monologue with only one cut in the scene--its a virtuoso comedic riff, perfectly delivered and ending with one of the film's best lines: "It burns!"). Leupp later got a larger role (again as Coco) in the funniest movie of 2003--GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS). Tori Spelling is also a revelation as Gabe's neurotic galpal; she's wonderful in a hilariously bad musical number early on and she tops that with her diner meltdown later in the film.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and cheerful
Love this movie, everytime I watch it it puts me in a better mood. Sure it's not the best of movies, but it's still entertaing to watch as the characters interact.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful, horrible, ridiculous.
i cannot get thru this one.i started fast-forwarding but there didn't appear to have any good spots.when i saw that christian cammpbell was in this, i thought, this has to be good.i had just finished a movie where he starred.can't remember the name of it.i guess a person should never buy a movie because of who stars in it.tori spelling is well known, but not to me.someone should have put her out of her misery right from the start.she does not play a flake very well, and i don't know what to call her except a flake.i stopped this dvd in about the first 1/2 hour and will go back and give it another shot, but with tori spelling as one of the leads, i already know this one does not have a prayer.i would say; save your money on this one unless you are under 13.i have a ton of straight and gay movies that tell a story and a couple or few that don't.this one falls into this category. one that came with this one was "the broken hearts club" and while not my cup of tea it was far superior to this piece of garbage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth is Too SAD to acknowledge.. This movie Shows it with Humor
I have seen the other reviews and agree with them in the main. This movie is absolutely worth the cost. When you have read and know the incredible pain visited on children by institutions like this, it is good to be told in a humorous way of the pain visited upon these children. It is definitely worth seeing especially after reading about these torture camps. If it evens open the eyes of one parent or caregiver, it will have been worth it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, fun, Hilariously crazy!
This movie, I have seen back when it came out, and I loved it! I watched in alomost everyday, and vnever got tired of it! I saw it again and loved it like the first time I watched it. Light, and cute! Keeps my mind happy, and entertained! I definetly suggest anyone to watch this movie. Especially if you feel misunderstood or out of place, this movie will pick you up, and show you that you are not alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars An underrated gem
This underrated, highly entertaining satire boasts memorable performances, clever camera angles and a spirited production design. Look for a red-headed, scene-stealing Douglas Spain (Walkout, Band of Brothers, Resurrection Blvd) as one of gone-with-the-gays True Directions' "misfits." His climactic tearful speech is both touching and hilarious. Pop the corn, kick back and treat yourself to this delightful romp. ... Read more

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. Nearly every scene is perfect. The performances are fantastic, and the movie manages to be both moving and hilarious. It's sort of an updated version of Death in Venice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, overlooked, fresh
This movie probably deserves more like 4.5 stars. I really like it a lot. It is the story of an old English man played by John Hurt - described best by amazon as an "author of laborious text" - who develops a huge (homosexual) crush on Jason Priestly's character, "Johnny Bostock" an aspiring actor. Stuck in b-movie roles, Bostock's participation in cheesy 80's-style teeny bopper movies introduces a side-theme to the movie that I for one found totally hilarious. Many of Bostock's cinematic appearances are shown in the film, and to see Jason Priestly playing an actor who is himself in turn playing some absolutely ridiculous 80s studmuffin is really one of the highlights of the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, Unusual, Brilliant Acting
John Hurt shines in this obscure 1998 film that should have received more attention than it did.

Not for all tastes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Daniel Day Lewis Gets Discovered
Before My Beautiful Launderette, Daniel Day Lewis was a nobody.Afterwards, he was a force to contend with (four years later he would be an Oscar winner).
5-0 out of 5 stars Following the traces of Werner Fassbinder!
Stephen Frears paid a felt tribute in Fassbinder' s memory through this picture. This launderette is an authentic micro cosmos that allowed to join two well opposite personalities so different in attitudes and particular ambitions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun but not very deep
"Get Real" is really the standard 'gay boy in high school' movie in all respects. The storyline follows Steven Carter, a rather shy boy, as he falls in love with jock superstar John Dixon. Through a series of happy coincidences, they get together and become boyfriends, against all odds. But while Steven, supported by female schoolfriends, is increasingly seeking to come out of the closet, John simply doesn't dare to lose his reputation and constantly reneges on his relationship with Steven. Meanwhile, Steven is constantly pestered by the school bully, who has an inkling that he might be queer. The tension and secrecy finally come to an end in a somewhat climactical ending when Steven wins an essay award and decides to come out right there.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for Gay "coming of age" films
Simply put, you can't go wrong with this film. I first seen it several years ago and was absolutely bowled over by it's message and the outstanding acting of Ben Silverstone. Steve, (Silverstone) is writing for his school newspaper and decides to share his secret life, anonymously through the paper, to try and show his peers a little of what his life is like as a gay teen. This is where the message in this movie takes off. Meanwhile, he goes to a toilet where he passes a note through a hole in the stall and hooks up with a guy for sex. The guy is Johnnie, a jock on campus whom he has been afraid of. The meeting is very awkward and uncomfortable for both, and nothing happens at that moment, but a seed of desire is planted. These two characters are attracted to each other and can't just walk away. In a series of events, they get together, form a friendship, and share a beautiful relationship together in private. The editor for the school newspaper refuses to print the anonymous article Steve has written but word gets out about it's existence, while ears and eyes begin to investigate whom it might be. When the truth comes out to a group of jocks about Steve's undying love for Johnnie, Johnnie's reputation is put on the line, and his love for Steve is put t
