Burt Kennedy wrote several of the finest Westerns ever for director BuddBoetticher in the late '50s--marvels of austere, subtle storytelling. Yet on hisown, writer-director Kennedy tended to very broad comedy-Westerns. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So where's the DVD?
This great comedy is about two modern-day hard-luck cowboys who are always getting into a bind, and when they do, their boss is always there to bail them out of their trouble ... and into his debt (hence the name "Rounders"). As a result, they always owe him money, and to pay him back, they have to do the jobs no one else will. Paticularly funny are the scenes with the two air-head women they encounter toward the end. A great movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars THE ROUNDERS-THE ORIGINAL
I'n not talking of Matt Damon's "The rounders"..I'm taking about two great Hollywood ALL STARS...GLENN FORD & HENRY FONDA...with CHILL WILLS..their bossman!!This is a mordern day western with pure crayiness..about two cowpokes breaking in horses to live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Two Step
Once a year, for 16 years, the richest men in the territory gather for the biggest event of the year. It's 2 fisted action in Laredo, but no guns are needed as the big event is the annual poker game. They gather behind closed doors in the town's hotel/saloon that caters to rowdy cattlemen. There's nothing more important and a 12:30PM sharp the game will start.
4-0 out of 5 stars An ace in the hole, suitable for most any audience
Superior acting from an all-star cast would alone make this one a winner.Add a novel story line with continual twists and turns, nonstop action, and glimpses into human nature elicited through a big stakes poker game, and you end up with one of the best westerns ever filmed. The only negative surprise is how few people -- even movie buffs -- know about this one.The industry should make it available in DVD, but the VHS sound and picture quality are as close to DVD as anything I've seen.

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Video's I ordered
I order video's from Amazon quite frequently and am always satisfied with their quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dumpling Gang is aDisney live-action classic
The Apple Dumpling Gang is a movie Disney made when for whatever reason they were straying temporarily away from animation and making more live action movies. And truthfully a lot of good(not great, but good)live action family films came out of the 1970's.
5-0 out of 5 stars great family fun
I had forgotten about this movie and my son who is now 25 asked me if I remembered watching it when my children where small.I did not.He thought it would be worth finding. So was very happy to find it on amazon.com along with some other oldies that both kids remembered. My kids were thrilled when they watched these oldies again. 5-0 out of 5 stars Long on Atmosphere, Short on Action - one of the best Westerns ever made
From the opening credits until the climactic confrontation at the end, this movie has the `feel' of a great Western. The tale is simple and relatively small in scope.A small town sheriff (played by John Wayne) and his ragtag groups of deputies and assistants (including Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and Walter Brennan) must hold a man (Claude Akins) arrested for murder in the town jail until the US Marshal arrives.Akins' brother, played admirably by John Russell, and his gang of ruffians will stop at nothing to break him out.Ward Bond, another longtime filmmate of Wayne's, also has a minor role.Angie Dickinson plays the love interest. This is a film about atmosphere and the interaction between the characters, not action, and is filled with multiple subplots. This film has the `feel' of the Old West, perhaps not as it really was, but as it should have been. The main line of the story progresses slowly, so if you are ADHD and can only keep interested with lots of gunfights and explosions, this film is probably not for you.Dean Martin's character is a recovering alcoholic and trying to become the man he once was.Wayne's character, while trying to hold his prisoner, is becoming entangled in a relationship with Angie Dickinson. It is really the development of these subplots and the relationships between the characters that make this film so memorable. One of the other reviewers states that this film is easy to watch, and I would agree.I can watch this movie over and over, and if you like Westerns with atmosphere, I think you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars We want more of J.T.
Back when entertainment entertained, there was Rio Bravo, the Gesamtkunstwerk of the Old West, what with the Tiomkin score, Big Duke in front of the camera, Walter Brennan complaining from off screen, and Howard Hawks behind the camera. BTW, I understand that scenes containing Harry Carey, Jr., were left on the cutting room floor. How about restoring them?

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry don't get it done, dude!

Editorial Review

This 1970 film teams director Gene Kelly with two veteran Hollywood actors in a light romp about two over-the-hill cowboys who inherit a bordello. Henry Fonda and James Stewart dusted off their spurs to team up in this appealing if formulaic western comedy. The two Hollywood legends play aging cowpokes who seem to do nothing but get on each other's nerves as they travel aimlessly through the West. They finally hang their hats at a new home--Stewart's newly acquired bordello, presided over by Shirley Jones. Theirs is an uneasy alliance, as they set up shop and have to deal with the women and their needs. There are some light comic moments as director Gene Kelly keeps everything breezy, so that even the obligatory gunfight at the film's end isn't what one would expect. This is not a classic on the order of other Westerns featuring Stewart and Fonda, but a chance to see two old pros spoofing their own legendary careers and having some fun in the process. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The CSC is the place to be
Well, the other reviewers pretty much hit the nail on the head. Not the greatest Western of all time, but really good. One of my favorite Stewart/Fonda films. And it is FINALLY coming out on DVD later on this year. Can't wait.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pimpin' IS Easy...Circa 1867
This is not a good film. The term "classic" need not be applied to this film, no matter those involved. All-Star pairings have never been a guarenteed winner. All it has going for it is it's leads, and even they don't seem that into it.
4-0 out of 5 stars THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB
Why this comedy/drama western..directed by the great song & dance man himself..Mr.Gene Kelly..was not on DVD..blows my mind.It was release by National General Cinema which is no longer around..some studio should pick up on it..like Paramount did for Warner Bros..John Wayne's Classics..HONDO..ISLAND IN THE SKY..ETC.Fonda & Stewart right from the GO..were GREAT..going from state to state while Fonda kept on talking away at poor Stewart.Their SUPER with each..they play off of each other just as they are..LEGENDS!!Yes..they were just like Robert Duvall & Tommy Lee Jones..from..'LONESOME DOVE..for sure. And also in WIDESCREEN.Somebody please pick up the ball on this LOVEABLE WESTERN.Thankyou---Jack ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rootin',tootin' Grable legs it in Western farce
First time around this Preston Sturges (writer, producer, director)movie was given the thumbs down by most of the critics. However, today it is hailed asclassic comedy, with a classy leading lady - Betty Grable! Shethe cutest li'l ole gunslinging saloon girl who shoots a judge (where itdon't show) and legs it with her pal, Olga San Juan, to the next town alongthe line where she poses as a schoolmarm. Betty only has two numbers inthis one, but her comedy performance is first-class, especially aided byMargaret Hamilton, Sterling Holloway, and a whole host of oldtimers. Greatfun- if you don't take it too seriously! A very underrated PrestonSturges production. And it's a pity Grable wasn't allowed to do more wackycomedies like this. She's a natural. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever......
I watched this back in the 70's as a child and hadn't realized until watching it again recently that it had influenced some of the things I say today.. "you look like one of those funny boys". Absolutely love this movie, and anyone who doesn't needs to have their diaper stuffed w/ cactus....

5-0 out of 5 stars Evil Roy Slade
I saw this movie many moons ago.I consider it to be the greatest film since The Ten Commandments.I've wanted a copy for years.John Astin is brilliant in this fine true-life story of a lad in the old west who was raised by wild animals after his wagon train was ambushed. Even the animals shine in this production.Evil Roy Slade would make the ASPCA proud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very dated......
but still brings a laugh. I still remember the patented Bud Spencer thunk on the head. The surgery scene was priceless where the knife was heat disinfected and then wiped across Bud's never washed shirt, or the patient becoming an alcholic, or Terence Hill pulling his dirty clothes back on after the soak. Just introduced this to the latest generation of our family. Tanks for the memories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Longing for DVD
This movie has to rank as one of the funniest under-rated movies in the whole spoof western genre. The incident with the witch doctor, the duel with the chief's son, the flaming arrows, no, I'm not going to tell you what happened. The nude swim in the water hole, and how that girl can fill a wet blanket, (brings a whole new meaning to the phrase}.

3-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for snakes!

5-0 out of 5 stars wayne makes this movie work
this is the movie that won john wayne his oscar and while he is very good i think he has had better roles than this but not as colorful. something happens here as wayne goes away and "fat" rouster cogburn shows up. wayne makes you feel every sore, pain and even every drink he takes. the action of helping a girl hunt down her fathers killer is really just a jumping off point so that wayne can work his magic and turn an ok western into a great one!! ... Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh the camptown lady sing this song dooda dooda!
so hilariously funny. bart (clevon little) plays one of the slaves and becomes the first black sherriff that offends the white town of rockridge and his first white friend jim (gene wilder) who is reffered to as the waco kid. No one would except the new sherriff and the bad guys would try to kill him buy sending mongo or lili von shtup. So funny that melbrooks should keep doing more and more funniest movies. another old movie of the late 70s but very good I give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work of art
(4.5/5 stars) This film is so good because we all know people who are racist or who harbor prejudices against an ethnic or religious group. Brooks lays all of this bare and then confronts this bigotry directly by making a black man and his Jewish partner the heroes of the movie. True, the Gentiles don't fair very well in the movie because it seems every one of them winds up being portrayed as racist, mindless or both. As a Gentile, this does not bother me because I believe the point Brooks was trying to make is that during the period in which this film takes place, the 19th century, the white majority largely viewed the non-white minority as second class. Certainly there were enlightened people who earnestly believed all races and classes should share the same privileges, but this was after the Civil War and long before the era of Civil Rights. Blacks were free, but were very far from being accepted in business or as part of white society as a whole. It is within this setting that Brooks devises an astute commentary on the topic of race relations. When the Governor (Brooks) makes Bart (Cleavon Little) sheriff (as part of a self-serving plan, incidentally), no one takes it seriously because the town sheriff is a person the townsfolk respect and upon whom they rely (or at least hoped) for safety. How will these whites come to terms with having a sheriff they do not respect, and whom they view as being naturally inferior and therefore incapable of protecting them? This is not one of those condescending, guilt-ridden movies that white people make wherein the black man with a heart of gold is redeemed at the end only because a sympathetic white character shows him some pity. (See: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Green Mile, etc.)No, in this movie, the black characters are seen as being clever, intelligent and talented enough to redeem themselves based on their own terms. Yes, there are racial epithets and stereotypes that are offensive and politically incorrect; however, these are used to illustrate the ignorance and intolerance of the offender rather than as a valid way of inciting the offended. Much of the humor is sophomoric and scatological, so one's appreciation of the film will likely be in direct proportion to one's proclivity for such humor. Listen for Frankie Laine singing the title song and watch for a cameo by Count Basie. The finale is rather weak and I wish Brooks would have ended it before it spilled over the set, which is why I stop short of giving it five stars. The anniversary DVD is presented in anamorphic widescreen and looks great.

Three Western stars (Martin Short, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase) from Hollywood silent films go to Mexico for what they assume will be a publicity appearance, and find they've actually been summoned to fight a local bandit. John Landis directed this 1986 comedy with self-conscious artifice, and it's hard to get into his self-congratulatory joke. Even the three main stars, brilliant comics all, can't sustain anything funny in it. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Wherever liberty is threatened, you will find... The Three Amigos!"
Directed by John Landis and written by Steve Martin and Lorne Michaels, THREE AMIGOS stars Steve Martin as Lucky Day, Chevy Chase as Dusty Bottoms, and Martin Short as Ned Nederlander. The trio is a group of sub-par actors in the hey-day of silent movies.Their films have been a landmine for Goldsmith Studios. However, their last picture bombed and the studio wants the trio to return to their usual format for their next picture. The Three Amigos request a few demands from the studio chief Harry Flugleman (Joe Mantegna) and are promptly fired and kicked out of the studio.Looking for work, the trio receives a telegram from a small Mexican village seeking the assistance of The Three Amigos. The village is being terrorized by a fierce bandit gang that imports their guns from Germany and the villagers seek defenders. One of the villagers sees a Three Amigos picture at a church and mistakenly believes it to be a documentary and sends the telegraph.Desperate for employment the trio answers the call and arrive for a show. They just weren't expecting real bandits with real bullets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, clean slapstick comedy
I remember seeing "The Three Amigos" in the movie theatre way yonder in my days of youth. At the time, I thought it was the funniest film I had ever seen. Three of my favorite SNL stars Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short in one film. How much funnier can a movie be? Not much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstood 70's Classic
Sure, the dialogue doesn't always make sense to the plot, but that's because the plot is so slight that the characters have time to talk. A lot of the dialogue is in non sequitar form, and for some reason a lot of people just can't get over that fact, mainly because they need their stories spoonfed to them. There are a lot of hilarious bits. For instance, Paul Newman's character has an anger problem, but he doesn't really want to hurt anybody and he always feels guilty for everything he does. At one point, as he's losing an argument with Strother Martin over some money he just walks over to a TV set and drops it out of a hotel window. He's not doing it to scare anybody, he's just frustrated. I bet more people feel like Newman's character than most of the ones you have ever seen in film. At another point, he kicks over a tiny trash can in a park, again frustrated in an argument over money. But, as he tries to walk away he gets an exasperated look on his face and walks back and puts the trashcan back in place. He simply felt too guilty. Now, maybe I just have a more finely tuned sense of humor than most people, but that cracked me up. I have felt, and done, that many, many times.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't know why I like it, but I do.....
Maybe I like this because it seems so dated in the 70's. Maybe I like it because of the awkward dialog that sometimes is painful to watch.Despite being filled with stars and featuring a really good song by Carole King, it comes off as low-budget. The characters are great - Newman plays an honest simpleton and Marvin's character seems suspiously like Kramer from Seinfeld (seriously, watch this and tell me Kramer didn't steal his act from him!) If nothing else, I like it because it reminds me of a simpler time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Low Expectations Pay Off
If you were sitting in the theater about thirty minutes into this film, you gotta start wondering: where the heck is this going? If you continue to watch for the pay-off (figuratively and literally) you'll wind up just like Newman and Marvin's characters--amused but unsatisfied. Pocket Money made pocket money on its release, but that's not because it isn't good. In its way, it is a real gem, especially for Newman and Marvin fans. It just requires the viewer to appreciate the journey and not the destination. If you like "slice of life" character studies, you'll rate this 5 stars; if you want action, resolution, and easy to follow plots, you'll rate this 1 star, so I figure it averages a 3.

5-0 out of 5 stars The elusive dreams !
Cable Hogue is the most poetic film of an epic filmmaker as Peckinpah was. This is the portrait of human being who will make the best he can in order to achieve his personal bliss, far from the madding crowd. Intense, lyric and heartfelt rendition of the most representative North American genre: The Western considered as a mythic universe.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
The ballad of Cable Houge was an excellent movie. At times it is funny, heartwarming, and sometimes sad. Aside from it's entertaining value, there are other elements that make it somewhat of an epic. So if inclined, you could value this film as an entertaining movie, or also appreciate it for it's symbolism. Also of mention are the memorable performances by the actors, and (as the the special features reveal) the dedication put forth by the director, photographers, writers, and crew. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before State Farm, AFLAC andPrudential, there was Milford Farnsworth!
There's just something so inherently likable about Bob Hope. Maybe it's the quick wit and comedic timing. Maybe it's the self-effacing "just one of the guys" mannerisms. Maybe it's the basic decency of the man shining thru. I don't know, but he's my favorite film comedian, bar none. Alias Jesse James is just another fine example of Bob exercising his immense comedic talents to their fullest.
4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Western Spoof With Bob Hope In Fine "Cowardly", Form
Greatly enjoying Bob Hope's "lovable coward", characterizations that he played so well in many films in different settings I found the very funny "Alias Jesse James", set in America's old West one of the comic's best. Having already used a western setting to great effect in his earlier comedy classics "The Paleface", and especially "Son of Paleface", it was the ideal setting for Bob Hope's brand of comedy where his nervous non heroic characters always contrasted superbly with the hard drinkin', hard shootin' rugged men out on the frontier. In "Alias Jesse James", Hope has one of his most memorable characters to play in bumbling, inept insurance salesman Milford Farnsworth who through an unlikely set of circumstances finds himself up close and personal with notorious outlaw Jesse James to who he unknowingly sells an insurance policy which ultimately will involve more than just signing on the dotted line. The crazy situations that Bob Hope gets into make for a most amusing film which is rich in the expected sly references to current events which became an expected and much anticipated feature of all the Hope vehicles.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother With this One
The acting in this movie appears forced and is not very good.--It is not a good western.Looks like one that was made to fufill an obligation on an contract or something.Dean is at his lowest in this one.Western fans--Avoid this one!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars "Angels With Dirty Faces" out west
Boyhood pals Rock Hudson and Dean Martin grow up to live on opposite sides of the law in this entertaining Western that is a sort of variation on thetheme of 1938's "Angels With Dirty Faces" with Martin taking overfor James Cagney and Hudson stepping in for Pat O' Brien.Although, like alot of Universal "product" at the time, it has TV stamped allover it (and both of the stars were headlining NBC shows during thisperiod), and it was probably intended as nothing more than a fulfillment ofa feature film clause in Hudson's "McMillan and Wife" contractwith the studio, it somehow reaches beyond its modest beginnings to becomesomething a little deeper and of higher quality than was perhaps intended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The one you have been waiting for as Lou gets the upper hand
Abbott & Costello make a rather unusual western with "The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap."In this 1947 comedy Bud is Duke Egan and Lou is Chester Wooley, a pair of traveling salesmen who stop in the wild town of Wagon Gap, Montana on their way to California. When Fred Hawkins is shot and killed the boys get charged with the murder. This is where this film comes up with the unusual twist.Someone finds a Montana law that says the winner of a gun duel has to assume the debts and dependents of the dead man. This means that the Widow Hawkins (Marjorie Main) and her seven children are now the responsibility of Chester (it would not be as funny if it were Duke, trust me).So while the Wistful Widow works Chester from sunrise to sunset to take care of the dependents, the saloonkeeper works Chester at night to pay off the dead man's debts. Then Chester makes a remarkable discovery: no one dares to shoot him because that would mean they would inherit the Hawkins clan.Suddenly Chester is the Sheriff of Wagon Gap and starts cleaning up the town!5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE TEAM'S BEST FILMS
