Editorial Review

Victor Borge was a master at combining two seemingly disparate elements: comedy and classical music. While the Dane's dapper dignity fit the image of "longhair" music, Borge undercut it with broad physical comedy, clever spoofs, and off-the-cuff wit. A pioneer in the field of live comedy recordings, Borge is nevertheless best appreciated on video, and Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great routines, but truncated recording disappointing
Victor Borge is as funny as ever in this 90-minute live performance. He is thoroughly engaged, very lively, and manages to deliver even his most common routines with such energy and humor that you feel as if you're seeing them for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Humor At It's Very Best
Always wanted to see Victor Borge perform in person but never had the chance. His timing and ability to communicate with the audience is remarkable. The real musical talent of Mr. Borge on the piano is woven into his performance for all to enjoy. He simply was one of the very best entertainers of his time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Movie
At her husband's funeral, a Jewish woman (Shirley MacLaine) is approached by an Italian man (Marcello Mastroianni). After offering his condolences he asks her on a date. She accepts just to shock her sister and mother-in-law who are watching over her with their instructions of what she can and cannot do. On their first date, for coffee, she learns that 25 years ago her husband was going to leave her but was talked out of it by the man who sits before her. He's waited all this time for her to be free. She doesn't know how to deal with information so she deserts him. He's not easily discouraged and positions himself in her life affecting both her and the members of her family.

When is this title comming out on DVD? With all the junk out there comming out 2 days after it's final movie runs, why can't they release this future classic on DVD. So well written, funny, sad, heart warming all at the same time. There are very few movies that can make you feel this many emotions all in one movie. I have the VHS version but would LOVE the DVD if it ever comes out. If you liked this movie, please rally for it's release on DVD by indicating it in your review. Thanks ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Flick
Just watched it last night for the first time in years and it's aged very well.Fun movie with lots of laughs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome 80's gem!
I love Can't Buy Me Love! This was one DVD I had to own, simply because I'd worn out our old VHS of it years and years ago. Years before "McDreamy," Patrick Dempsey plays Ronald, who like most guys in town, has a thing for Cindy Mancini, the captain of the cheerleaders the prettiest girl in Tucson. The nerdy Ronald is constantly picked on and is tired of being considered a nerd. Wanting his senior year to be more than "cards with the tards" as his brother Chucky calls it (played wonderfully by Seth Green when he was just a kid), Ronald finds himself in a position to help Cindy out of a predicament. She needs money to replace a suede outfit she borrowed from her mother and ruined, and he needs to be popular. Cindy doesn't think Ronald's plan will work, but she has little choice. She agrees to pretend to be his girlfriend for one month, but not even Ronald expects his plan to go over with such initial success. But soon, things unravel as they tend to do, and Ronald and Cindy both learn a lot from their mistakes. It's a great 80's movie with a wonderful message about being yourself entwined in it. If you grew up in the 80's and you missed Can't Buy Me Love, for shame! Go get it now. It rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars like an old friend
one of my favorite movies of all time and definately the best teen movie of the 80s.i am on bedrest for my pregnancy and this dvd (along with the veronica mars dvd and a book i just finished reading, both of which i just reviewed on amazon) has helped make the last few weeks bearable.really brings back what it was like to be a teen in the late 80s and i can personally tell you that it stands up to repeated watching over and over again.i must have watched this movie five times over the last few weeks and it never gets old.

Editorial Review

Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful peice of classic cinema
What a wonderful movie!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sense and Sensibility
Jane Austen was so wonderful at creating reality on the printed page. She sent up society by spot-on accurate portrayals of it. I feel like stressing this point. It sends up pretension by accurately portraying it. It is humour and realism at the same time. I can think of nobody better at doing this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine adaptation that will please most viewers, sans Grant
This film looks beautiful with that particular fresh and green loveliness that typifies the gentlefolk's 18th / 19th century England. It's a delight to watch, and the screenplay itself is wonderfully done, combining the sensible and likeable characters with the truly absurd characters, not to mention those whose characters are morally enfeebled. Jane Austen's depiction of human frailty as well as goodness has always impressed me as being true and very apt, striking home not merely with insightful viewing of human beings but also the very particular aspects that define a person of English gentility in the 1800s.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Popular And Enjoyable Film
Even though this film was released in 1985, now, more than 20 years later, it is still highly entertaining. You get at least a few moments with each character, develop a feel for them, and come to like them all.You really want to see them succeed, and the suspense of whether they will or not is constant. This movie is good for all ages, and is rated PG.The Cyndi Lauper "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" song was a nice touch.Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg created a magical movie that will be enjoyed for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
As an old fan of Glenn Miller & Sonja Henie, I too am waiting for the DVD release of this movie, as it will hopefully have the option of subtitles.I don't want to miss a word of the dialog! As a young adult I spent many an hour dancing to that fantastic Miller band, and am a nut when it comes to ice skating performances.Put the 2 together, and WOW!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sun Valley Serenade
This is a light hearted 1940s movie that showed life at an easier pace than today. It was fun to view the older styles and earlier ski equipment. An all around fun movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S THE MUSIC
This movie has been on my mind, essentially for the music, since I first saw it as a teenager about 1949.Now I can enjoy those great songs again and drive the family bananas. My only disappointment is that "At Last" has disappeared and is only heard through the credits.

Editorial Review

This 1991 comedy by Gabriele Salvatores was knocked for notbeing deep enough, but it is what it is, and it's actually an easygoing, sunnymovie about eight Italian soldiers who manage to strand themselves on a tiny Greek island paradise during World War II. The sort of mutts who would shoota donkey for not knowing the proper password, these clumsy warriorsbecome a comic variation on the Lotus Eaters of myth, their fighting spirit evaporated in the midst of so much beauty and sexual availability among the local women. There are also sundry opportunities for the men to find another purposefor their lives (one particularly artistic fellow works on the restorationof a church, for example). Amid the sometimes coarse jokes and gratuitous nudity, there are subtle themes about the contrast between what men are truly like in their natural state versus what they are like as killers. 5-0 out of 5 stars Time Out from War
"Mediterraneo" is a FUN movie. It's a very likeable story of a group of Italian marines who follow an assignment to occupy an obscure Greek Aegean island during the early period of WWII.Due to a series of escapades, they lose their contact with the outside world.Instead, they get caught up in their own little world for the next three years. That may sound like a boring movie but things happen from time to time and the excerpts we see are generally pretty funny. The different personalities emerge and their variety allows the writer and the actors plenty of room for development. In the end, the marines are "rescued" by their new allies; the British.Initially, all of the soldiers were focussed on getting out of this forsaken island. In the end, the island had become their home and their "rescue" was a mixed blessing.A post script ending brings the feeling together in a poignant way.

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter is Addicted to this movie.
Bedknobs gets 5 stars because it's one of my daughter's favorites. It gets played over and over again. It's a simple magical story with silly songs. I don't quite understand why this movie is so special to daughter. She is autistic and one thing I know about her tastes is that she gets bored very easily with contrived, canned entertainment. If it comes from the heart, she really takes it to her heart. Maybe the ensemble that put together this movie had a lot of fun doing it and she picks up on that. She prefers it over Mary Poppins and much prefers it over Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang

This movie is one of those family charmers that has something for everyone. There is an exciting animated portion for the children. There is a love story for the ladies. And there is a battle with World War II Germans for guys of all ages.Tying all these different aspects together is a wonderful concept; Angela Lansbury is a mail-order witch!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Family Fun!
This warm and funny account of a newly married couple trying to make a go of it on a backwoods chicken farm, based on Betty MacDonald's popular best seller, was a big hit with audiences during the 1940's and has lost none of its appeal today. This is a great film the entire family can watch together.Chester Erskine produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Fred F. Finklehoffe in this hilarious and heartwarming film all will enjoy.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Funny Movie Based on a Hilarious Book
"The Egg & I", a movie based on the book of the same title, is entertaining, clean( you can let the kids watch this one), and funny. It's not quite as funny as the book, though. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good clean fun... recommended!
A genuinely funny, old-school comedy, featuring Fred MacMurray as a city slicker gone country boy, a white collar executive who decides to chuck it all in and become a chicken farmer, somewhere deep in the boonies, and Claudette Colbert as his long-suffering, stand-by-her-man, newlywed wife. Both actors have superb comic timing, and theirchemistry together-- he blithely missing her every disatisfaction, she gulping back her exasperation -- is quite good. This was also the first movie to feature the iconic "hick" couple, Ma & Pa Kettle, a Lil Abner-ish pair who went on to make several films together after this debut.I suspect this film, however, is the best of the lot.Recommended! ... I really enjoy this movie. In fact, I've watched it more than once.It not only is a comedy, it also has some romance and sweetness in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sweet homophobic Alabama
Hesitation over the title of this review was purely for consideration of people who might have taken offense at the use of homosexuality in the traditional role as a comedic device for dehumanizing people. In this Fantasy Fashion Designer Barbie role play kit, we are presented with two suspect homosexuals, the flamboyantBlack assistant fashion designer, and the quarry closethomosexual who has to have his disorder pointed out to him, preferably in an embarrassing public denunciation.Barbiehas tolearntheneed for her toscriptandtypecast sexuality aroundher because she is the sensation (fem fatal) for persuasion predominant in the sphere of people around her.A Countrified Fantasy Fashion Designer Barbie Killer Instinct--role play kit. And it is perhaps an interesting microcosm of analysis to vaguely note the teddy bear appeal assigned to the openly gay Black character, artistic, talented and unflinching. It is the idea that for women, gay men make the best friends, that I won't quote yet I seem to have heard it somewhere in the cultural media stream at some time in the past. Thus a possible depolarizing of "sexual prowess" is covertly used to adjust traditional racial stereotypes, (and that term is taken straight from multicultural theory). Further complicating the plight of the Black male character in the film, is the Civil War reinactment-buffooning in the presumably lingering prejudicial South, where no doubt the image of African Americans as sexually iconoclastic, bandages woundedWhite male libido traditionally injured by jibes of phallic innuendo.Surely considerate people everywhere are tired of this dredging up of unpleasant or bawdy associations; circumcision is perhaps the original anthrospecific-insult (precursor to sexual dysfunction then marital dysfunction and the whole syndrom of social ills that erode social fabric from its core) but anthropologically the film is enriched elsewhere.
3-0 out of 5 stars A simple country girl.
Sweet Home Alabama tries to be a cute and funny romantic comedy but just ends up falling a few centimeters short of brilliant. Reese Witherspoon plays Melanie, a fashion designer who resides in New York but now she must go back to the state she was born and raised, Alabama and must find her husband to get a divorce as soon as possible since her new boyfriend has proposed marriage to her, but unknown to him he doesn't know about Melanie's marriage to a good ole country boy back in sweet home Alabama. Her husband is played by the very hunky Josh Lucas and the soon to be finacee is played by Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey. This film has some sweet and tender moments and I think the orginal ending to the film was better but the director, Andy Tennant was told to change it because the ending was considered too depressing, Tennant explains in further detail in the special features section. Witherspoon can make any mediocre film seem better than it actually is, a so-so film, decide for yourself on this one.

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is quite simply a most magical filmmaking experience. It's a film that is truly brilliant in every way imaginable. From its plot, a brilliant homage to the great film noir thrillers of the 1940s', to the fantastic visuals, still impressive even today, to its smart, funny, fast paced script, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is a truly timeless piece of cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars Four Oscars!
Well-deserved Oscars for Editing, Visual Effects, Sound Effects Editing, and Special Achievement (animation direction) recommend this delightful film, which combines live action and animation before CGI came into regular use.Watch for the beautifully realized details throughout. For example, the Toons have shadows, and when one is thrown against a venetian blind, it bends and makes the sound of somebody actually hitting a venetian blind. The interaction between live action and animation is so good, you quickly forget they're not really together at all -- and much of the credit for such realistic "interaction" must go to live actor Bob Hoskins. There are a load of extras in this 2-disc package, including both fullscreen and widescreen versions, audio commentary, a deleted scene, and a very interesting "before and after" split-screen comparison with and without animation. This is a technical masterpiece and well worth seeing again and again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest
In our house, this is one of the all-time favourite movies. *Everyone* is perfectly cast, the style constantly changes (on-stage, off-stage, fantasy projections of how numbers could be staged...) and it manages to be convincing as a small-time theatre production while at the same time being colourful and imaginative. Covent Garden could learn a thing or two about staging from this movie. This is Ken Russell's greatest movie. We want a DVD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy, silly, ridiculous, and I love it!
I have one copy of this tape and I guess I'd better get a backup -- doesn't look like it's coming out on DVD anytime soon and I'm gonna wear the poor thing out! It is a perfect portrayal of a bunch of wannabes who definitely will never-be... OK, except Tommy Tune who's probably just too good to perform as barely adequate. Christopher Gable likewise performs like a pro. (Is that perhaps a failing in this particular flick, which is all about a bunch of folks who aren't really that great?) Twiggy is perfectly cast. She's delightfully amateur as a singer; she's so likable, such an underdog, so frightened, how can she not be a sympathetic character? Even the awkward edits, which would be unforgivable in a more serious film, are perfect amateur glitches here (watch the jumpy splices in the "Perfect Young Ladies" number--really horrible, but just exactly the right thing to leave in on this movie). My favorite over-the-top silly bit is Polly's extended Grecian nymph fantasy. Tommy Tune leading the chorus of nymphs off to save the day is hysterical. And the whole thing takes place in the space of time it takes for Polly to make quick eye contact with Tony offstage... and ends when he winks back at her. Two seconds of real time. What girl hasn't had an extended fantasy compressed into a few seconds? It's all so cheerfully, delightfully cheesy. Not a guy's film. It's a chick flick. Perfect for the end of a really yucky day: curl up with your Teddy bear and something chocolate, plug this movie in, and enjoy the ride. It asks nothing of you, just happily delivers a series of giggles and a Yay! at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Comedy
I was barely 3 when this movie came out. But all my friends with families told me I absolutely must watch it. This is something every parent can relate too. You can watch with any crowd, even 20-somethings without kids are doubled over laughing.

My god. I swear that I'm amazed that so many other people who were kids back in the '80s memorized "The Dentist" routine. I had that one down PAT back in the
