4-0 out of 5 stars Lets Get together!!
Annie and Haley are identical twins. Only they don't know it. They both meet at a summer camp and at first they do not get along. Then they are forced top live together and that is when they find out that they are twins.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the original
A charming film score coupled with a refreshing re-write of the timeless story turn this one into a classic in its own right.Lindsay Lohan outshines Hayley Mills in the role(s) of the twins, which puts this one a notch above the 1961 version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable!
This was the first movie I had seen with Lindsay Lohan and her performance has made me quite a fan of hers.Throw in an absolutely charming performance from Dennis Quaid, an ideal mom played by the lovely and talented Natasha Richardson, and a smart and warm housekeeper played by...er, I forget..and you'll see why this film gets so many rave reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Marx Brothers take Gypsy culture! - Put this on DVD!!
There is no way to summarize the plot of this film, except to say it's what you'd get if you dropped the Marx Brothers into Gypsy culture and stirred it all up. It's wild, crazy, and filled with music and dancing and unforgettable characters (played by real actors and actresses, not Hollywood ken-and-barbie dolls). You either like this kind of thing, or you don't. Astoundingly, some don't. Go figure! For me, it's a joy to watch.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies Ever
This is without a doubt one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.It is so intricate, human, and lovingly bizarre that I don't see how anyone could not absolutely love this movie. You have to bear with it for a bit in the beginning because there are so many characters and the plot is so complex that it takes a few scenes for you to get your bearings.Even during this time, though, the movie is absolutely hilarious. It's even more funny, though, once you realize what's going on.After that, just sit back and enjoy.Without equal. ... Editorial Review

Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY is this film NOT on DVD!!!???
I'm very pleased to see a flurry of 'new'/er reviews of this film.I only hope the DVD gods take notice!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A film no fan of comedy should miss
This touching, sly, hilarious comedy with understated performances should be on DVD. Walter Matthau's transformation from a vain, self-absorbed product of inherited wealth into a caring human being is brilliantly written and played. Elaine May's klutzy, endearing, naive Henrietta is one of the loveliest of screen portrayals. This film is a true classic, under-seen and under-appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exemplary undertaking
My predecessors in reviewing this movie have done a great job of detailing it's highlights... I cannot advance their descriptions and their accolades any farther than they have done.I will, however, add that this is one of those movies that when you see it on cable at 3 am, you will not be able to turn it off. After you watched it and failed to find the title you will canvas your friends to try to find out the name of the movie... when noone knows what you're talking about, go to your secretary who will google the actor and the story line and come up with the name of the movie and you try to find the dvd and it won't exist...then you vainly try to find the title anywhere and it comes up on vhs. BUY IT because if you don't you will certainly wish you had. I have a brand new vhs player sitting in my attic in the box so that in the future, when the vhs player is no longer available and the studio wonks refuse to put classics on dvd, I will still be able to play these movies like "New Leaf" that aren't on DVD. ... The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still An Enriching Experience
They may have cut the overture and intermission, etc., but what was restored in the directors cut lengthens the original. And I don't really feel the previously edited songs enhance the experience. Just like my dislike of "Apocalypse Now Redux." A poor addition of far inferior scenes in my opinion. Fortunately, "1776" stills remains a patriotic and historical delight. Almost like watching a stage production, another example of how film adaptations done right, can add to the limitations of stage scenery. Should be required viewing for school children of all ages.

2-0 out of 5 stars They should call it 1775
What a disappointment, and one for which the DVD manufacturer is stupidly responsible. Despite discovering the original negative and beautifully restoring the original version of this vastly entertaining film (after years of us fans settling for a battered workprint of the deleted footage on the laserdisc), Sony cut off the overture, intermission, and recessional music. While, on one hand, they brought director Peter H. Hunt and screenwriter Peter Stone (now, alas, deceased) into the booth to record a commentary track in which Hunt admits to removing some of the music, the overall effect is still to cheapen the viewing experience. So, yes, buy this puppy for its quality and educational value, but get prepared for a shortfall in showmanship. Next, class, we shall discuss the fact that there is still a scene missing from the restored "Lawrence of Arabia"...

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have been a clunker but turned out a gem
I think this is one of Goldie Hawn's/Kurt Russell's best performances. You really notice how thin/contrived the plot is but you put up with that just to see these characters. Also, Roddy McDowell, her mom, the doctor, the kids, bad Billy, and the coast guard guy (lewis??).Not to mention the workers at the sanitariam, trying to get rid of her, high fiving when someone finally comes to claim her.
4-0 out of 5 stars A golden Goldie treat!
No matter how many times I watch this movie (and believe me, I've watched it many, many, many times) it's always enjoyable. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, an incrediblly rich, incredibly bored and incredibly bitchy woman with nothing left to do while her yacht is docked at a small coastal Oregon town called Elk's Cove but to hire a carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell, gotta love him) to remodel her closet. But when the job isn't done to her satisfaction, he winds up overboard along with all his tools. He vows to get revenge on her and the opportunity presents itself when Joanne falls overboard in the middle of the night and is later discovered by a crew of Portuguese men on a garbage barge. But Joanna has amnesia and can't remember who she is. And her husband Grant is all to happy to pretend he doesn't know her and leave her in the hospital. But when Dean sees the "amnesia lady" on the news, he recognizes Joanna and hatches a plan to get revenge and get the money she owes him. But neither one expects to fall in love with the other. Overboard is a fun and funny movie that also teaches us the lesson that money doesn't buy us complete happiness. It can for you though if you buy Overboard because it's worth watching hundreds of times over. I love it! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny!!!
It's a zany mix-up in this dazzling comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This is a riches-to-rags story for anyone who loves practical jokes. Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered and self-centered wife of a presumptous yacht owner. With theirboat stuck in port for repairs, Joanna hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell)to redo her closet space. But after the job is complete and Dean asks to be paid, Joanna flat out refuses to him. When Joanna falls overboard and gets a case of amnesia, Dean jumps on the opportunity for a little payback. He tell Joanna that she is his wife and the mother of four wild and unruly boys! So check out this hilarious movie, and be prepared to laugh all the way through it! ... Read more

All the reviews here, correctly, state what a terrific movie this is. But for me...just having turned 60...I confirm the absolute veracity of an early line of the movie, a voice-over by the great William Powell: "Ah, fifty. The old age of youth, and the youth of old age.."That, my friends, is the truth. Now, however, I am one lucky boomer to be able to confirm also that "sixty is the new forty." So, there it is. This quintessential Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musical has all the kinetic energy and beaming goofiness that made their films together (nine in all) so popular--and so easy to lampoon. The son of a vaudeville performer (Charles Winninger), Rooney decides to put on his own show (in a barn!) to save his family's fortune, his town, his peers, and, gosh darn it, even the American way of life. The star luster generated by Garland matches the explosive energy of Rooney's performance. Director Busby Berkeley's big production numbers are a sight to behold, from a march through town for the title number to an embarrassingly dated minstrel show routine. The movie was made the same year as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes in Arms
Great old movie, good watching for the times we live in. A lot of good music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mickey and Judy!
This classic film stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland as teenagers living in Seaport, Long Island, NY just before the Great Depression struck. Vaudeville is dying; thus Rooney's family business as show biz perfomers is very much at stake. When the older folks leave Seaport to put on a show and prove to the world that Vaudeville is not dead yet; they leave the younger folks behind. What to do? Put on a show! Rooney's character trys to woo some fading child star so she can put up the money for the show and bumps Garland from the lead. She inevitably retakes the lead in the show and everything ends happily ever after when out of nowhere some hot-shot producer likes what he saw in the barn show scene. (By the way, one cautionary note: the barn show scene includes a minstrel show; although typical of that era it is not only dated but potentially ofensive to some viewers.) The viewer also gets an extra treat: Margaret Hamilton has a small role as the nasty old lady who runs welfare in the town and wants to send the kids off to a vocational school. All in all, this really is a very goood movie and great fun to watch. I would add that this is an obvious must-have for any Garland or Rooney fan. A BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Essential for Rooney-Garland Fans
In the 1939 Mickey Rooney was among the top box office draws in the world.Judy Garland had appeared as a supporting player in two Rooney films, and the two had significant chemistry--more over, Garland had just completed photography for THE WIZARD OF OZ--a film that MGM rightly expected would launch her to international stardom. The time was right to costar the two, and MGM did it with BABES IN ARMS.Read more

Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars too expensive
yes, waaaay too expensive
4-0 out of 5 stars "She Came Home and Vibrated for an Hour!"
The above is the only risque line you will hear in this classic family comedy starring the one and only Don Knotts.I just watched this movie for the first time in over 30 years and this movie brought back so many memories. If you were born between 1955 and 1965, this film was probably a big part of your childhood.I was a little too young to see it when it released to theaters, but it played on local television at least once a year in the late 1960's andearly 1970's. It doesn't have much of a reputation in "film" circles but for kids of that era it's one of the period's essential films.
5-0 out of 5 stars KNOTT'S BEST FILM!
The Ghost & Mr. Chicken has always been my favorite Don Knotts movie and probably my favorite role of the recently passed comedian. The film was made in 1966, just one year after he had left the Andy Griffith Show. The film not only works as a wonderful comedy but also an effective horror. This used to scare the heck out of me when I watched it as a kid.Knotts plays his usual, nervous twitchy self, this time as Luther Heggs a copywriter for a small-town newspaper who dreams of becoming a reporter. He gets his chance by getting to spend the night in the old, reputedly haunted, Simmons house where Mrs. Simmons was murdered and Mr. Simmons committed suicide 20 years earlier. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Sullivan's Oscar Moment
I don't know why Ed Sullivan didn't get more movie roles after his performance in The Singing Nun.Astonishing, simply astonishing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, fine cast.
Based on a true story, The Singing Nun tells of a nun, Debbie Reynolds, who walks a fine line between joyous praise through music and vain self-glorification as her popular songs become commercially successful. The story's pretty simple as she rises to fame, with a profound twist that gives her a wake-up call. There's a terrific supporting cast, but the main appeal is the music, my favorite being the song "Dominique," which she performs on the Ed Sullivan show (apparently based on a true-life event, with Ed Sullivan appearing in the movie to recreate it).Fortunately this melody is used extensively in the films score making for very pleasant viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Movie....
This movie is sweet and fun. That's all. It's not complicated, it's not a biography. It's a fictionalized account of a "Singing Nun". Debbie Reynolds has a beautiful voice.I loved this moviewhen I was little and still enjoy it! ... Read more

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC FAMILY FILM THAT HOLDS EVERYBODYS' INTEREST
FIRST IMPRESSIONS -- If one were to imagine a happy ending where 'Belle' from 'BEAUTY & THE BEAST' became a beast in the end rather than the beast becoming a Prince, one can get an idea of what Shrek is all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charming fun from an unexpected hero
Whereas Pixar always focused on good, clean family fun in its pictures, Shrek came into the spotlight because Dreamworks decided to skew the jokes a little more towards the older audience, while maintaing the basic family-friendly atmosphere. It worked, and Shrek was the film that proved it didn't take Disney/Pixar to create animated box-office gold.

4-0 out of 5 stars MEN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Another bizarre entry in the Coen Brothers arsenal, O BROTHER is a thoroughly entertaining if somewhat unusual film. The story focuses on three prison escapees who are going to Mississippi to collect the 1.2 million dollars supposedly hidden there.Based on Homer's ODYSSEY, the film involves our three heroes/stooges in some unusual adventures, all leading to a lot of twists in its looney conclusion. What makes it work is the spirited performances of George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as the escapees; the charming bluegrass music including the surprise smash hit I AM A MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW and some nice bits from supporting players John Goodman and Holly Hunter. It has some Three Stooges touches, and is filmed quite beautifully. All in all, a weird but enjoyable comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Cow !
About two years ago I was in a thrift store checking out the good stuff, as I was heading out I walked past a TV set that was playing "O Brother, Where Art Thou".I was stopped in my tracks and stood there for half an hour just mesmerized while watching the video. Talk about totally different and totally enjoyable, I couldn't belive it, it reminded me of a time in the 1940s while living in South Carolina. I returned the next day and bought the video. Now I have the concert "Down From the Mountain"

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney does its magic!
Another Disney classic just like Pocahondas, Shrek, Snow white, Alandin and Lion King. These are cartoon figures and films that are never forgoten.

2-0 out of 5 stars The legend reworked...
To be fair, the legends of Herakles, as they were originally written, have little to do with this movie, but maybe that's for the best.Having grown up on Superman, Batman and the Justice League, I have a hard time calling a person like Herakles a hero.In the original legends, he was a warrior, but also a brute who eventually wound up killing his wife and children in a fit of rage.He also wasn't, as far as I can tell, as strong as in this version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun - the Kids and I Liked It
This is a great show and very entertaining. The story isn't the Greek classic, but it's a fine riff on it.The songs are good, and they grow on you as you watch.I take issue with the reviewer who thought there was gratuitous sexuality in the Meg character - it's just a cartoon, for pete's sake.

5-0 out of 5 stars That mythical place where everyone gets what he/she deserves
Other reviewers have given plenty of information regarding the general shape of this film--stars, cast, vignettes.A wonderful collaboration of ten different writers who together with a cast of stars, character actors, the Hall Johnson Choir (one of the gems of the Harlem Renaissance), and probably every extra then available in Southern California trace the path of a tailcoat cursed by it's tailor. This film was released in September 1942, the same month the German 6th Army began it's advance on Stalingrad; it was, and should be, considered light entertainment. Not Frank Capra-ish, each vignette weaves into the next with the final feeling of the film leading the viewer tobelieve that people, good and bad, somehow get what they deserve.A gentle gem with a particularly wonderful performance by Edward G. Robinson.Watch it with an open mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of 20th Century Fox stars
"Tales of Manhattan" was an essentially pointless series of vignettes starring a plethora of stars under contract to 20th Century Fox studios. The pretext for the story surrounded a finely tailored formal tailcoat which was purported to be cursed. The tailcoat represented a talisman of both good and evil as it was passed from character to character.

I loved this movie. It is a very classic story set to wonderful music. The interactions between Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison make this a real gem worth seeing over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
My Fair Lady is wonderful. (A bit chauvanistic for our time though). Eliza is a spitfire. The music is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Sex and the City = More Shoes!!!
Sex and the City is back again. This time there is more sex, more relationships and of course more drama. It's so good though, and addictive. Just by watching it, you are already a part of it, like their fifth girlfriend, with the same problems. It's funny and it's great all the way around!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved it one of the best series ever!!
I love sex and the city for it's great humor to realness that no other show has done before. I have to say I enjoyed season 3 better but I liked this season better then season 1 and 2. The season started off slow but picked up fast. This season deals with more maturing story lines. Carrie gets engaged, Smatha learns what love is, Charlette delas with a not so perfet marriage and Miranda gets pregnet. It's weird to see how the charactors have matured through out the first 4 seasons. I cant waut to watch season's 5 and 6.

4-0 out of 5 stars more sass, more sex and more drama from our favourite New York foursome
The fourth season of SEX AND THE CITY opens a new chapter of love, drama and, well...sex, for our favourite New York galsCarrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristen Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall).

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa Claus is real
Tim Allen really puts the heart into this movie to make anyone young or old truly believe. The movie is even entertaining for young children with nothing to frighten them and there is no swearing which is another plus. One of my favorite Christmas movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tim Allen is a talentless moron!
The Santa Clause is just another stupid movie starring that no talent lowlife Tim Allen.Bottom Line: this movie isn't funny, Tim Allen isn't funny (never has been), and by spending money on this movie you will not only be as stupid as Tim Allen, you'll be throwing your dollar bills right out the window. It's a shame that a drunk driving, drug peddling, zero like Tim Allen can become so popular amoung children by using family films as his bread and butter.I tried on a pair of shoes yesterday that were funnier than Tim Allen! What a lame excuse for an actor.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
This DVD skips quite a bit, making it hard to relax for what should be an enjoyable movie. Also, the plastic covering on the DVD casewas torn a little bit when the security sticker was taken off.I've never had a movie do that before.I would think twice in the future before buying movies from Amazon.com. ...
