3-0 out of 5 stars Fred Astaire as sexual predator.
Overall as musicals go, this is ok, but I was very uncomfortable with Fred Astaire acting like a sexual predator. The way he aggressively approached and man handled Audrey was atrocious.

4-0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore!
If you've only heard about FUNNY FACE, you really owe yourself to SEE it with your own eyes for the first time - and now that you can buy the DVD at Target for like $5 clams, why not? There are many great old-school "Golden Age" musical numbers on display here, from THINK PINK to BONJOURS PARIS (filmed in various locales around the City of Lights, sorta like a fashion-magazine inversion of ON THE TOWN), and especially the cool-cat beatnik dance number Hepburn does in the bohemian bar - *you'll note that THE GAP recently used clips from this celebrated sequence in their "Skinny Black Pant" ads set to, of all things, Back in Black by AC/DC! - but here is the original, and it's sublime - you are amazed how expertly Audrey hoofs it up in gay Paris! The direction is flawless, especially several auteur touches, like the stop-motion photographer during the Givenchy outdoor photoshoot, and the one dance sequence in Astair-cum-Avedon's photo darkroom only lit by one tiny red bulb...now that's TECHNICOLOR! While the films' gender politics have dated, this was filmed in a different era and much more conversative sensibility, so cut the movie some slack. This is a gorgeous, timeless musical that could use a contemporary update by a major studio - hello?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Face
Audrey Hepburn is perfect for this movie and I enjoyed it very much.

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dumpling Gang is aDisney live-action classic
The Apple Dumpling Gang is a movie Disney made when for whatever reason they were straying temporarily away from animation and making more live action movies. And truthfully a lot of good(not great, but good)live action family films came out of the 1970's.
5-0 out of 5 stars great family fun
I had forgotten about this movie and my son who is now 25 asked me if I remembered watching it when my children where small.I did not.He thought it would be worth finding. So was very happy to find it on amazon.com along with some other oldies that both kids remembered. My kids were thrilled when they watched these oldies again. 4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?
Add me to the long list of Andy Griffith fans who would love to see this on DVD.Considering all the terribly unfunny comedies that have been released on DVD over the years, why not release one that actually works?
5-0 out of 5 stars Certainly dated but very good fun just the same
Andy Griffith an underrated actor (as another poster says)? Griffith is a total legend in his own time! This movie has some hilarious moments with Griffith largely responsible for it all though Murray Hamilton, Nick Adams, and Myron Mccormick are all good support. The scene where the latrine is rigged so the toilets salute (!) was too riske for 1958 but they got it pass censors somehow (a mystery). Lastly, a splendid bit of thanks to the now late Don Knotts for his splendid cameo as the high strung enlisted man in this film. RIP Don! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Preston Sturges crew is aboard for social comentary,
satire & farce. John Sullivan is played by Joel McCrea, a light, very sucessful comedy director. In this movie about making a movie, Sullivan is determined to make a serious movie for which he is ill-equipted. He wants to explore poverty in America, get in touch with the poor, the down-trodden & the homeless accross the country. However, he has never experienced a day of need in his life. He has not & probably never will pay his dues.

I saw this at the movies years ago and fell in love with it. I particularly loved the use of classical music throughout: at the time I wasn't "into" classical music, but I think it sparked an interest that I followed up when I got older.

This smash musical that won the Oscar for best dance direction was headlined by leggy Eleanor Powell abetted by a cast of superb dancers who danced, well.. spectacularly.

So far this is my favorite Broadway Melody movie from the series. Anyway the movie stars Robert Taylor, Eleanor Powell, Jack Benny, Una Merkel and Buddy Ebsen.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cliche, But Lots of mid-1930s Musical Charm
The plot of BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938 is a classic of its kind.Bob Gordon (popular matinee idol Robert Taylor) is producing a Broadway musical--but he runs afoul of actress and financial backer Lilly Brent (June Knight), who sees herself not only as the star of the show but Bob's ladylove as well. When their "romance" is played up by gossip columnist Bert Keeler (Jack Benny) fireworks ensue, and matters are further complicated by the arrival of Bob's old flame Irene Foster (Eleanor Powell) who has come to make her fortune as a dancer on the Great White Way.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great family film
As with all the Wishbone series Wishbone: Dog Days of the West is a great family video. My children always ask to check it out at the library. We've seen this movie several times and it doesn't get old.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
Though my family loved the PBS series, I was a little dubious about the quality, content and pace of this "feature length" movie, but it's actually funnier and more engaging than any of it's30 minute counterparts. This sustained the interest of 2 adults, my 9yr old son and both of his toddler sisters better than most Disney features! Though I believe the film may star a new Wishbone, the doggy acting was still quite charming, and the usual gang are all back in fine form, with the additional fun of seeing a much more grown up David. What really makes this movie fabulous are the perfectly acted western sequences. Calliope, the town drunk, is nothing short of hilarious, but in addition to some really good laughs, the story also offers a very warm and meaningful moral highlight. Even my critical husband was impressed....This is great family fun your kids will enjoy watching over and over again!

Editorial Review

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Go To Funerals.
Harold and Maude is Hal Ashby's 1971 cult hit. Dividing critics, the film nevertheless collected a massive following, spawned a play on Broadway, and has also given birth to new phrases, "Harolding" and "Maudism".
5-0 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST films to help you face living
Prior to VHS or DVD - back in 1971-75 - when movie theaters (remember those, the ones where it was only $1 for two films and a short and the films were shown in BIG theaters - so what if the sound wasn't Dolby or DTS - films were still films not; just 1 of 10 stock plots enhanced by computer special effects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still Quirky and Funny Black Comedy Tells the Ultimate Opposites-Attracts Love Story
This 1971 black comedy is still a stitch, even if it doesn't feel as audacious as I'm sure it once did. Directed by the maverick Hal Ashby, it is the epitome of all opposites-attract love stories as a twenty-year old depressive connects with a 79-year old life-loving woman. They actually bond over their mutual interest in death, as they keep showing up at the same funerals. However, the root of their respective interests couldn't be more different - Maude shows up to reconfirm how lucky she feels to be alive, while the hearse-driving Harold simply likes the morbidity of it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best movie I've seen since Aliens
Amazon is overrun by 16-year old kids who blast anything that their 17-year old peers deem uncool or lame. Some of the "reviews" here for Shrek 2 are almost as funny as the movie. What did you people expect? Think for yourself for once and rate something depending on how you liked it or not, don't go and call it "an insult to cinema" just because that gothic freak thinks its lame. Shrek 2's the funniest, best movie I've seen in 20 years.

There are some lovely and funny moments in this movie (many of which have already been mentioned by other reviewers) but it doesn't all come together into an interesting or emotionally-satisfying story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Poetic dream
I saw this movie few years back and wanted to see it again and finally found it on Region 2 DVD, in its full length version. The movie is dressed in Goran Bregovic's beautiful music, while the acting of Depp, Danaway and Lewis is captivating. It's not a movie for everyone, nor will all viewers understand what lies beneath the skin. Samantha and her fellow witches are bedeviled by Halloween in thesetwo black-and-white 25-minute episodes specially packaged for the occasion. In "The Witches Are Out," Darrin (Dick York in both episodes) is fired afterrefusing to use a stereotyped old crone witch in an ad. I saw this movie when I was in elementary school. We went on a field trip. We went to a park after the movie. I was waiting in line to use the restroom and I shouted at one of the teachers for not letting me use it before before we left the park. My teacher did not like my behavior and she told me to owe the person an apology and I refused. As result I was not allowed to go on their field trip with them. Universal Pictures made a great deal of money from its monster movies in the 1930s. In the early '40s, the burlesque team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello kept the studio's coffers full. This is one of those movies that works for all the wrong reasons--disgusting, lowbrow, base humor that we are all far too sophisticated to find amusing. So, just don't tell anyone you still think it's a riot to watch John Belushi as the brutish Bluto slurp Jell-O or terrorize his less-aggressive fellow students. This crude parody of college life in the '60s spawned many imitations, but none could match the fresh-faced talent or bad taste of this huge box office success. How I wish this film had come out in 2006, when it would have been seen as the political commentary it is not but could have been looked at as anyway. You can see what I mean. Anyway, I treasure Ishtar, particularly its leads Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty and the supremely ridiculous Charles Grodin for having the courage to be so stunningly idiotic. And, as others have written, what glorious songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfairly maligned Ishtar is a comic masterpiece!
Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman are brilliant and charismatic in this side-splitting buddy farce about the fantastic misadventures of two passionate, sincere, severely deluded songwriters attempting to become the next Simon and Garfunkel. Recognizing the duo's complete lack of talent, their agent books them a gig in the only place he can: Morocco. Through a series of absurd mishaps, they become embroiled in revolutionary espionage. The CIA is playing high stakes chess with communist revolutionaries as Beatty and Hoffman wander lost through the desert on a blind camel.
