5-0 out of 5 stars I bought a DVD player because of this release...
I am really sorry that this version of Yellow Submarine has gone out of print. When it came out in 1999, I had not yet purchased a DVD player, but I did immediately buy the VHS version. It was so wonderful, SO wonderful, and I read so many great reviews about the DVD, that I went out and bought the DVD, before I had a DVD player. Then not only did I buy a DVD player but also a new Kenwood receiver so I could get all the benefits of the surround sound. That's how crazy I was.The really crazy thing is, it was worth every penny.Plus it spoiled me.I expected every DVD release to show the same care and quality that Yellow Submarine did.The care that they lavished upon all aspects of this release, the video quality, the INCREDIBLE AUDIO QUALITY and the wonderful extras, are amplified by the horrible job that Miramax did on A Hard Day's Night. It's a shame that Apple could not was not able to get control of that. What a disgrace Miramax made of a classic.Makes me wonder what is happening with HELP!, Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be.I pray daily that Miramax isn't able to get their grubby little hands on anymore Beatle product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once upon a time... far-far away... behind the iron curtain...,
...there lived a girl in a big city. She loved to read, watch the movies and listen to the music. Her favorite group for many years had been the Fab Four from Liverpool, "The Beatles". Her wish was to collect one day all their Albums on LPs (yes, guys, it was that long ago). She had a dream to see her idols on the concert or in the movies but it was impossible. Their movies were not shown behind the iron curtain; as for the concert, they would love to come to her country but were not allowed. Then, one day, her mom told her that in the cinema close to their house, the retrospective of the British Animated Movies would be shown and she mentioned one of the titles, "Yellow Submarine". The girl could not believe her ears. Could that be true? Did the yellow submarine traveled many seas and made it to her city? Ringo, John, George, and Paul did not stuck in the sea of time; they emerged from a "Vacuum Flask to Nowhere and with the little help of a "Nowhere Man", Jeremy, they walked through the sea of holes "that stopped their minds from wondering"... The girl had to find out if it was true.

This fun and stylish Rene Clair comedy gave two big Hollywood names--Fredric March and Veronica Lake--a chance to break away from their stereotypically serious roles (as intense leading man and film noir vamp, respectively) and exercise their funny bones. The sultry Lake stars as a Salem witch burned at the stake who returns to haunt the descendants of the Puritans who let her smolder, namely aspiring politician March. Lake concocts a love potion for her victim that will get him to fall in love with her, rather than his snooty fiancée (Susan Hayward in one of her early roles). Things get a wee bit complicated when said potion works its spell on Lake instead and she falls head over broomstick for March. Blissfully hilarious and romantic, this Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bewitching Comedy With Sexy Witch Veronica Lake
It's rare nowadays when you can say that you have seen a totally delightful comedy in the cinemas. That rare marriage of charming scenerio, ideally cast players, and romantic setting seems to be sadly a thing of the past which is why I always find "I Married a Witch", such enjoyable viewing. Here we have two very famous performers in dramatic veteran Fredric March, and Film Noir siren Veronica Lake playing against their usual "type" and having a field day cutting loose with this romantic screwball tale that combines sexy humour with elements of the supernatural. Based on the unfinished novel by "Topper", author Thorne Smith, "I Married a Witch", gave us a whole new image of what witches were like minus the warts and crooked nose and in much the same vein as the later legendary series "Bewitched", showed us witches who were playful and extremely sexy. Veronica Lake had I feel her most appealing role here and proved herself adept at frothy comedy and capable of far more than just looking slinky hiding behind her famous peek a boo hairstyle. Her chemistry with Fredric March is magical here (no pun intended!), and goes a long way towards making "I Married a Witch", the great success it is.4-0 out of 5 stars A comedy fantasy

I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old...yeah, I know...I was probably too young to see this movie but I really didn't get the "racy" parts until I was much older...like 10 1/2...
5-0 out of 5 stars This version is the one to buy....
If you have a widescreen TV, this is the version you must purchase. Unlike the previous "Special Edition" version, this new release is ANAMORPHIC widescreen, finally for the first time and it looks great on my new 32 inch Sony HDTV. The only downside is no sound upgrade, just MONO. The extras are the same as the previous edition. Anyway it is cheap and worth every penny for the new anamorphic transfer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie but...
I love Young Frankenstein. However, I was very disappointed when I realized that this re-release of it only had "mono" audio tracks. This is very disappointing because I would have loved to hear it in Dolby Surround. I am actually rather confused as to why they re-released it, because it has the exact same content as the previous DVD release... possibly a marketing ploy, I dunno.Let me also make clear that THE MOVIE IS A 5 STAR MOVIE BUT THE RE-RELEASE WAS THE REASON FOR THE 4 STAR RATING. Basicly, if you already have the "Special Edition" (earlier DVD release) you may as well save your money; they're exactly the same. However, if you have never seen this movie, I suggest you do yourself a favor and buy this movie. Definately won't disappoint fans of comedy. ... Read more

With all the deadly serious movies about the grail out there these days it's good to once again watch a movie that treats the subject with a sense of humor.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A Newt?
One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have been a clunker but turned out a gem
I think this is one of Goldie Hawn's/Kurt Russell's best performances. You really notice how thin/contrived the plot is but you put up with that just to see these characters. Also, Roddy McDowell, her mom, the doctor, the kids, bad Billy, and the coast guard guy (lewis??).Not to mention the workers at the sanitariam, trying to get rid of her, high fiving when someone finally comes to claim her.
4-0 out of 5 stars A golden Goldie treat!
No matter how many times I watch this movie (and believe me, I've watched it many, many, many times) it's always enjoyable. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, an incrediblly rich, incredibly bored and incredibly bitchy woman with nothing left to do while her yacht is docked at a small coastal Oregon town called Elk's Cove but to hire a carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell, gotta love him) to remodel her closet. But when the job isn't done to her satisfaction, he winds up overboard along with all his tools. He vows to get revenge on her and the opportunity presents itself when Joanne falls overboard in the middle of the night and is later discovered by a crew of Portuguese men on a garbage barge. But Joanna has amnesia and can't remember who she is. And her husband Grant is all to happy to pretend he doesn't know her and leave her in the hospital. But when Dean sees the "amnesia lady" on the news, he recognizes Joanna and hatches a plan to get revenge and get the money she owes him. But neither one expects to fall in love with the other. Overboard is a fun and funny movie that also teaches us the lesson that money doesn't buy us complete happiness. It can for you though if you buy Overboard because it's worth watching hundreds of times over. I love it! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny!!!
It's a zany mix-up in this dazzling comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This is a riches-to-rags story for anyone who loves practical jokes. Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered and self-centered wife of a presumptous yacht owner. With theirboat stuck in port for repairs, Joanna hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell)to redo her closet space. But after the job is complete and Dean asks to be paid, Joanna flat out refuses to him. When Joanna falls overboard and gets a case of amnesia, Dean jumps on the opportunity for a little payback. He tell Joanna that she is his wife and the mother of four wild and unruly boys! So check out this hilarious movie, and be prepared to laugh all the way through it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MEN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Another bizarre entry in the Coen Brothers arsenal, O BROTHER is a thoroughly entertaining if somewhat unusual film. The story focuses on three prison escapees who are going to Mississippi to collect the 1.2 million dollars supposedly hidden there.Based on Homer's ODYSSEY, the film involves our three heroes/stooges in some unusual adventures, all leading to a lot of twists in its looney conclusion. What makes it work is the spirited performances of George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as the escapees; the charming bluegrass music including the surprise smash hit I AM A MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW and some nice bits from supporting players John Goodman and Holly Hunter. It has some Three Stooges touches, and is filmed quite beautifully. All in all, a weird but enjoyable comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Cow !
About two years ago I was in a thrift store checking out the good stuff, as I was heading out I walked past a TV set that was playing "O Brother, Where Art Thou".I was stopped in my tracks and stood there for half an hour just mesmerized while watching the video. Talk about totally different and totally enjoyable, I couldn't belive it, it reminded me of a time in the 1940s while living in South Carolina. I returned the next day and bought the video. No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Taking liberties with Capote's bittersweet story, director Blake Edwards and screenwriter George Axelrod turn New York into a city of lovers and create a poignant portrait of Holly, a frustrated romantic with a secret past and a hidden vulnerability. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. The only sour note in the whole film is Mickey Rooney's demeaning performance as the apartment's Japanese manager, an offensively overdone stereotype even in 1961. The rest of the film has weathered the decades well. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic. 5-0 out of 5 stars As Charming as A Classic Can get!
Breakfast at Tiffany's... If you haven't seen it, then you must have heard of it in some way. You have heard the title somewhere, you read about it at someplace or maybe you have heard the famous musical theme by Henry Mancini? Yes, it's hard not to have heard of this classic masterpiece in some sort of way.
5-0 out of 5 stars delicious
Blake Edward's masterpiece isbright, funny, intelligent, and thoroughly winning, thanks to his deft direction and the singular presence of its stars.Stunningly gowned by Givenchy, Audrey Hepburn makes the part of Holly Golightly completely her own, and is so captivating, one couldn't care less how greatly the film differs from Truman Capote's much darker novella.George Peppard is her praiseworthy partner in his most memorable role.To better complement his spirited co-star, he plays Paul Varjak quietly, radiating a natural humor, pride, warmth, and grace. With astonishing blue eyes, perfect hair, cardigans, tweed jackets, and penny loafers, Paul is achingly handsome and infinitely desirable.
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly beautiful, sad film
The sight of Audrey Hepburn, dressed immaculately in a black dress, wearing large black goggles, holding a danish pastry in one of her hands and a coffee in the other, looking wishfully, enchantedly into the window of Tiffany, joins forces with the extremely beautiful yet melancholy background score by Henri Mancini to set the tone of the movie. Quirky, witty, modern, fashionable, yet flowing over an undercurrent of unexplainable sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars All these years later, still a fabulous film
Julia Roberts and Richard Gere magnetize the entire film and pull you into a fantasy land where dreams do come true.I understand the naysayers, but this film is not about Julia Roberts being a hooker.Obviously, some people find that horribly offensive. This movie is about love, gaining self-respect and believing in yourself (Kit . . . "take care of YOU").It's a feel good film about pursuing your dreams.Obviously, if some 14 year old decides she wants to be a hooker when she grows up so she can meet her prince charming, she needs some serious guidance.Yet I highly doubt even most 14 year old's are that stupidly literal about a film such as this.I'm 50 years old and, you know what?A LOT of my dreams HAVE come true in ways I never would have expected, including romatically. So there;0).

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie about Being a Whore
This is the worst movie I have seen in many, many years.I only gave it one star because there isn't a rating for negative stars. Does anyone who likes this movie not realize that its about a prostitute? A hooker?Julia Roberts can't act first of all.Secondly, the plot is so ridiculous. A rich successful businessman picks up a streetwalker for a night paid sex, and this is romantic? What a crock of crap!!! The most ridicuous, unbelievable scene in the whole movie is the scene where jason alexander's character makes a pass at Julia Robert's character.(Who, lets not forget, walks the street to have sex with whichever person will pay her money). During this scene, the hooker character actually acts like her dignity and virtue has been assaulted. She's a HOOKER!!! What the hell is wrong with you people???!!!
3-0 out of 5 stars The extras are 'pretty', but parts of the character development are unrealistic
The studio took a lot of time with anniversary extras for this self-described modern day 'Cinderella' film. I'm impressed with the number and quality of extras which are included inside this one release.Even with all of the technology we now have, very few movies get such extensive anniversary releases.

2-0 out of 5 stars Corny, predictable, contrived, and deceptive (in portraying New York.) I love it!
First, let me say that by quality film standards this is a terrible movie, in many respects. I live to walk on videos of this type with football cleats. But, this movie falls into the "I hated this movie so much, I couldn't help but watch it whenever it was on" category. And now I love it. I don't know what it is about this movie. I tried to put my finger on it many times. I always have and always will hate "Sleepless in Seattle," which is a totally contrived load of crap. But "You've Got Mail" has an undefinable charm to it that forces you to look past it's simplified portrayal of a happy go lucky, skip around the neighborhoods of New York atmosphere. It makes you question why you buy into such sappy dialogue and situations. It's not just because of the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks chemistry, because I hated the despicable "Sleepless in Seattle" and always thought the entire premis of "Joe Versus the Volcanoe" was a joke. But in this movie, contrived as it may be, that interplay between the two works. Though their acting is also hammy at best, I also love the contributions of Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Stephen Zahn and Jean Stapleton. This is one of my guiltiest pleasures. I'll only watch it with the remote on toggle to some type of sports programming in case my friends walk in on me while I'm watching it so I can jump inmmediately to the "Binford Lumberjack Finals," or something like that. But were they to walk in at the end of this movie and find me glossy eyed with a lump in my throat, I'd never hear the end of it. I love this movie. There! I admit it.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I absolutely love this movie. Hanks and Ryan have so much chemistry together and the story is so adorable. I have watched this movie so many times and love it more every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars ageless
I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. I laugh as hard at this in my 40s as I did in my 20s, it's just a hysterically funny flick!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply an enjoyable show
This isn't the type of movie that will make you reflect and question your life's ambitions, it's designed to make you laugh. I think it succeeds admirably. Molly Ringwald is perfect as the budding teenager ready to have life meet her full-force. She is surrounded by a quirky, forgetful family (complete with a jerk for a younger brother), nerdy boys desperate for her attention, good friends with whom she can be herself, and (naturally) a love interest. Anthony Michael Hall's character is as funny a dorky kid as I've ever seen...his dance moves are legendary! He has several monologues that still bring out genuine laughs from me, even after all these years of watching this classic.

A reporter and his psychopathic lawyer go to Las Vegas in order to report on motorcycle race...on just about every drug imaginable under the sun.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
I was one of the few that actually saw "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Not because of any affinity for Hunter S. Thompson(who I had never heard of before; forgive me I was fourteen), but after seeing this movie, which is best described as a "flawed masterpiece", I immediatley became a fan of the man, as I am still a fan of this movie.
2-0 out of 5 stars Long and Boring
Long on loathing. Boring, I fear. This trip was at somewhere I've never been, and I don't want to go there. A place beyond the event horizon. Who could care less about these people? Great title for a book, or a film, though. For some reason I've given it an extra star. I don't know why. Perhaps because it definitely belongs in anybody's collection of bizarre movies. ... I think this movie is a real hoot!Marilyn Monroe is a genius at playing dumb!Jack Lemmon is hilarious in drag and often steals the show and Tony Curtis is...um...well, beautiful! The movie is funny, entertaining, witty and charming. When Jack Lemmon is torn between being a man, AND a woman too, he becomes confused and its extremely funny; his delivery is perfect! Lemmon's performance is comic brilliance!

Some Like it Hot is #1 on The American Film Institute's Top 100 Comedies. This should be a good thing, to be on the list I mean, but to be #1 is almost a curse. It will subject the film to endless comparison and bashing, which the film may or may not deserve. Let me just start by clarifying this. Is this the funniest film ever made? No. Is it the most entertaining comedy ever made?
5-0 out of 5 stars A Whole Different Sex!
What a true film classic this movie is. Recently voted the funniest American film ever in AFI's poll of the 100 Funniest Movies, it never fails to disappoint. The paring of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon is pure magic. Each may not have been Billy Wilder's first choice for their respective roles, but one cannot imagine anybody else playing them now. As for Marilyn Monroe, she is the fragile, beautiful heart of the entire film. Her Sugar Kane is tragic, funny, sexy, and adorable all at the same time. I read how some of her lines had to be written out and displayed for her to read out while filming, and somehow this doesn't take away at all from her performance. She WAS Sugar Kane, always reaching for but not quite getting the sweet end of the lollipop. Jack Lemmon almost takes the entire movie as Daphne, his female alter-ego. How subversive this movie must have seemed in 1959, when a top male star could be seen reveling in his feminine side! As with "Sunset Boulevard" and "A Foreign Affair", the true strength of the film is the cast. Each person was letter perfect in their role. All of Billy Wilder's films should be essential viewing for any film buff. What he had was a true eye for talent in his acting roles, demontrated again and again in all his films, the knack for knowing who to put in what role. How many potentially great films have been hampered by questionable casting? It is a true gift, and not many really have it. This truly set Billy Wilder apart, and helped him turn this outrageous story into the classic it is now. Get this film for your collection, you won't regret it. ... Read more
