    Editorial Review

One of the most ferociously iconoclastic and experimental films of the French New Wave, Alain Resnais's 1961 feature, winner of the grand prize at that year's Venice Film Festival, is based on a script by Alain Robbe-Grillet. At its center is what seems to be a simple but unanswerable puzzle: Did its protagonist (Giorgio Albertazzi) have an affair the year before with a woman (Delphine Seyrig) he just met (or possibly re-met) at his hotel? The inquiry becomes an unsettling experiment in flattening the dimensions of past, present, and future so that any difference between them becomes meaningless, while Resnais's coldly formal but oddly dreamlike geometric compositions make space itself seem a function of subjective memory. Add to that Resnais's trademark tracking shots--long, smooth, a visual correlative of a wordless feeling--and this is a film that truly gets under the skin in almost inexplicable ways. One of the most influential works of its time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unutterable elegance
Whatever this is about, once you've seen it, you'll know you've seen something. What I mean is, whatever else you've ever seen, this is something else. Setting aside the helpful and fascinating extra features that came with my disc, by someone called Ginette Vincendeau, and suspending any attempt at prosaic understanding while watching, soak up the incomparable sensation of atmosphere, the sonorous sounds, the stunning sights, the sublimely stylish manner in which the images unroll. It almost makes the effort of interpretation unnecessary. But then, watch it again, and listen to all the explanations offered on all sides: hardly anyone can help coming up with their own ideas. And they are almost all different, since every viewpoint will alter the perspective of any object. There's the viewer who tells us it's actually the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. That long, tall, thin fellow is Death, who could lose, but always wins. This place is Limbo: the Underworld, where memory is erased, and time and place have no meaning, make no sense.Couldbe. Why does Death say he could lose? Answer: Amor Vincit Omnia. There are slight hints of Cinderella and her slipper; or the awakening of the Sleeping Beauty. The Life Force defeating Death and escaping from his dreary clasp. This is partly what Ginette puts forward. But she admits, I think, that this is too mechanical a reading; like the marionette-like dance, and the empty pleasantries of the half-heard conversations. This is a game, within a play, within a film, within a theatre, or on an unanticipated dvd. These people exist at one of civilization's high points, the eighteenth century enlightenment, baroque at the point of rococo, where order is everything, yet giving way to distortion. Or else they are an image of everyday life, its forms and conventions: this is a dateless reality of actually unrealized desires. Watch it a third time, and it becomes erotic. It is the product of a totally European sensibility, a specifically Franco-Germanic sensibility: America is far too adolescent a society ever to have created anything to equal it, in spite of Ginette's instancing Hitchcock, and Kubrick's "The Shining" --- which is lamentably feeble in its supposed emulation. It is easy to recognize genius: you know that however hard you might try, you would never come up with anything to match it.

3-0 out of 5 stars sunk in time after 46 years
Surely the film was very brave experiment by Resnais (the director) in 1961 (French "new wave"), introducing to cinematography what Joyce and Proust pioneered in literature at beginning of 20th century. Thus, the film is a great contribution to what we call the FORM rather than the content. That's why I rated it with 3 stars, not just one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Memorably tragic
Sansho the Bailiff projects a bleak and depressing view of medieval Japan. The director Kenji Mizoguchi was masterful, providing an authentic and unforgettable immersion into feudal Japan. This Japanese folktale describes the kinds of sacrifices that may have been required to overcome some of humanity's basest instincts, and a sad and mesmerizing story it is.The acting is wonderful, and the music excellent. There are a number of scenes that would likely be startlingly beautiful if shot in color, but fit the starkly tragic mood in black and white.Hopefully this great movie will soon be restored and transferred to DVD.Highly recommended.

    Editorial Review

Marcel Camus's 1959 update of the Greek myth features an all-black cast and a story set in the frenetic energy of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Orpheus, a trolley car conductor and superb samba dancer, is engaged to Mira but in love with Eurydice. For his change of heart, Orpheus and his new doomed lover are pursued by a vengeful Mira and a determined Death through the feverish Carnival night. Camus at once demystifies and remystifies the old story, shifting not only its location but its tone and context, forcing a reevaluation of the legend as a more passionate, pulsing, sensual experience. The film is really one-of-a-kind, an absolute whirl that barely needs words. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Original
Greek mythology was something I've never paid much attention to. Having said that, I knew nothing about the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It wasn't until I got this from the library (after noticing it had won the Palme d'or at The Cannes Film Festival and had won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film) and read the little booklet included in The Criterion release that I found out about the whole story. Needless to say, I found the whole idea intriguing. The filmmakers took this Greek myth and transferred it to Rio de Janeiro in the middle of Carnival and, in doing so, created a colorful and beautiful movie. That's not to say Black Orpheus is a very entertaining film, but the lush scenery and music make it a masterpiece. The story is pretty simple; Eurydice has arrived in Rio to stay with her cousin Serafina. Eurydice is running from a masked man (Death) and is in a frequent state of fear. When she gets onto a streetcar, she meets Orpheus; Orpheus is a streetcar operator and a ladies man who has just become engaged to Mira. When they're getting a license, the man jokes to Mira..."Let me guess. You're Eurydice." Orpheus, is popular around his community for his musical talent. It's said that when he plays his guitar and sings, he makes the sun rise. Anyway, the story is a Greek "tragedy" so you can guess that the love between Orpheus and Eurydice doesn't quite go as planned. The film's tragic ending is quickly lifted by a beautifully photographed scene. This movie is, technically, a love story...But the Orpheus-Eurydice is merely the foundation of the story. It's the music and art direction and cinematography that makes this so good. The music, especially, plays a huge part in the film. The look of the movie gets even better when you realize how long ago it was made. Look at the film "Some Like it Hot" (released the same year, 1959) and then look at this film. This movie will not entertain the masses for years to come, but movie/Greek mythology buffs might want to check it out. Or just people who appreciate beauty in film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Poetically beautiful
This movie is worth buying and watching over and over, the passion is felt between the characters and the setting. I just love the movie and it takes you to another world, another era.
5-0 out of 5 stars Five star slop job!
I hated this movie because it had no nudity...and bossa nostra music annoys me. If you wanna see nekkid girls, don't watch this movie. Mind you, I only watched the first 3 minutes before I figured I needed something more substantial...a TRUE masterpiece like "Back To The Beach". Buy THAT movie instead of 'Black Orpheus' because at least you get Frankie Avalon and Annette FunnyChello and PeeWee Herman. I just flicked through "Black O" and watched the first 5 seconds of each chapter but that was enough to tell me that this movie stinks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb gem of the German filmography!

I have watched this movie in a class that I am taking now entitled German Film:Beyond Faschism.5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Love
The way the intense, loving relationship between the young schoolgirl and the teacher was portrayed and developed was very moving. However, I didn't get a sense of sexual love or tension between the two.Instead, I felt more like the movie showed me the different kinds of love possible between two people, regardless of gender. The girl loved her teacher almost like a mother, but not quite. There was definitely something more to it than that type of strong yet simple and easily understood love. There was a sense of longing and forbidden love mixed in with this maternal love.I saw this movie not as an illustration of lesbian love, but rather as a sort of wake-up call that made me question my previous notions regarding love and what it meant to me.And if you ask me, saying that a movie can make you question these types of things is the highest form of praise I can think of. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have finally seen this movie and it is excellent
I travel to Algiers many time a year for work. As a result, I visited the Algiers casbah many times and each time, as I passed in front of the house where Ali Lapointe was killed by the French, along with another man, a woman and a 10-year old boy, I was reminded I needed to see this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary film
I'm a good friend of Haskell Wexler, and edited his film, "Medium Cool," in 1968. This film came out the year before and was required viewing for all of us -- especially because of the way it made a scripted story look like a documentary. I loved the film back then but hadn't seen it again until last week. I admit I was a bit worried that it would appear dated and irrelevant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original and Superb!
One of the most realistic war movies ever made, Battle of Algiers is a must see for those that would like a deeper insight into revolutionary mentality and/or expert film making. From actual FLN rebels used in the film to the scenes being shot on location, Gillo Pontecorvo is able to combine a terrifying event into a cinematic masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BURMESE HARP
Director Kon Ichikawa made a truly great movie, especially considering that this anti-war movie was made not long after the end of the second world war. [1956 release] Having read quite a bit about the Pacific theatre of war as an undergraduate, I came to appreciate this movie about how the trauma of this horrible war affected one Japanese soldier. The soldier becomes spiritually obsessed with burying as many Japanese war dead that he comes across in his journey throughout the country of Burma. And he vows to remain in Burma until he has accomplished this task [a very formidabale task!] The fact that this Cinematic masterpiece is only available on VHS, not DVD, does not detract from the richness of the movie. I rank this movie right up there with "PATHS OF GLORY," as my two most favorite anti-war movies ever made. A must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting Japanese anti war film!
At the end of the WW2, a survivor of a Japanese Command, follows his bliss when he takes a decision: to disguise himself as a monk . He will make a reflexive tour, a powerful insight act, a soul searching journey soul searching backto those places where his fellow comrades met the death. This redemption fact once more completes the mythical cycle of the life: birth and innocence, maturity and experience and finally wisdom and redemption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Come Japan, come England, Burma is Buddha's country
At the beginning of this long film the audience sees a spectatcular view red dirt and red mountains of Burma, which is very significant because, if one is familiar with Buddhist tradition, the dust symbollizes the mortal world of suffering and it represents what one wants to brush off if one desires to follow the path of the Buddha. After seeing the bleak terrain, the audience is introduced to a small contigent of soldiers led by Captain Inoue a former music teacher. In order to keep his troops spirits up, the Captain teaches his men how to sing with varying degrees of success. His most gifted soldier is Mizushima, who has taught himself how to play a Burmese Harp which he has mastered quite skillfully.

I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Las Hurdes is absolutely shocking
I just watched Land Without Bread, or Las Hurdes, the only documentary directed by Luis Bunuel. The film is short, only 27 minutes, but it is long enough to portray enough human suffering to disgust. Images include a girl who lies in a road for two days and then dies. No one helps. The local schoolteacher instructs rows upon rows of malnourished children to respect the property of others. The schoolteacher feeds them bread, and makes them eat it immediately to keep their starving parents from taking it from them. They dip it into the only nearby source of water, a trickle running through a ditch where the pigs wallow. Bunuel illustrates with these sorts of images how these people are unbelievably pathetic, yet he clearly goes beyond this when he shows images of the developmentally challenged somehow teetering on the edge of life in a world where even the fittest can rarely overcome. "Morons and dwarves are plentiful..." says the narrator, but in some degree or other, all the people of the community are tragically moronic at every turn. They drink water from the ditch, yet somewhere within a reasonable distance is a river. They try to plant a crop, but the crop is washed away because they plant too near that river. They cook over an open fire indoors, but they don't make windows for themselves to let smoke out of their homes. They have no food for two months of the year, and yet mothers carry babies around in almost every shot. The viewer is left with the distinct impression that these people can't survive much longer, and there is certainly no optimism in sight when the film ends. How in the world can these people not plan a little better? The answer, I think, must lie in the intellectually suffocating nature of their hopelessness, the horrendous condition they feel swept away again and again along with every one of even the slightest currents of misfortune. Perhaps they've simply quit trying, it would seem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, but no masterpiece
Recently, I purchased and viewed my first Luis Bunuel film, Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned). The film is very good, including some incredibly poignant and unforgettable images. I then decided to purchase and view one of his earlier works, likewise considered a masterpiece of film, Un Chien Andalou/Land Without Bread. This is awful. A mish-mash of mush! Its only redeeming quality is its brevity. Once again, here we have a film that is given much more credit than it deserves, and I'm starting to think that the reason this often happens is that: a) the movies are old and therefore deserve respect for being "groundbreaking" b) they are "enigmatic," which is the critically vogue term for "confusing," which is often the polite term for "stupid," which when inserted into the VCRs of sheltered and myopic film critics can be enigmatically transformed into "intellectual." What's more appalling than this film is the praise that is heaped upon it. So the eyeball scene is groundbreaking. So what? It's not all that! I suppose lifting up the blanket--twice--to view the dead baby was likewise groundbreaking. Try disgraceful. Un Chien Andalou/Land Without Bread is a mongrelization of meaningless movie-making that belongs on some dusty shelf in some vault catalogued for historical reference only. You've been warned.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'Land Without Bread' might be Bunuel's masterpiece
'Un chien andalou' (1928) is the best-known film on this video and is a fascinating work in its own right, but the real masterpiece here is undoubtedly 'Land Without Bread' ('Las Hurdes'). As great as most of Bunuel's subsequent films would be, this 27-minute 1932 work arguably towers above them all. Calling it a documentary would not do justice to its unrivaled breadth: among other things, this film asks the questions 'what is a documentary?' and 'what is the role of the documentarist?', and this prevents us from using definitive, short-circuiting labels. In fact, no label could conceivably express this film's power. The controversy surrounding this work has three main sources: 1) some of the sequences have apparently been staged by Bunuel; 2) the impersonal narration seems in direct contrast to the pain and tragedy that unfolds on the screen; 3) so is Bunuel's choice of using Brahms's Fourth symphony as background music. For these reasons, cinephiles have been disagreeing for over 70 years about Bunuel's treatment of human and animal misery in this film. For me, his audacious technique creates a space - a window - between the viewer and the plight of the Hurdanos; it is this space that somehow transfigures their misery, rather than merely exploit it (as some have suggested). The film becomes a true initiation for the viewer: it provides a difficult, troubling but potentially life-changing experience. In the end, Bunuel's intentions do not matter as much as the impact his film can have on those who see it; and for this viewer, he has carved a moving, mysterious and ineffable work. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This 1931 film puts one of the musical theatre masterpieces of the 20th century--a slashing attack on greed, violence, and social pretension--in the visual and musical context of its origins. Musically, it omits some of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's numbers and gives to others a softer edge than the hard-hitting music took on in the last half of the century. The 1931 singers, including Weill's wife and definitive interpreter Lotte Lenya, tend to croon numbers that are snarled or barked in the definitive audio recording Lenya made and supervised in the 1950s. A comparison of the 1931 "Pirate Jenny" song, for example, with the recording a quarter-century later shows how performing styles toughened after World War II. Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Die 3groschenoper
This is an early adaptation from play to film; this is a different media and should be judged with that criterion in mind. Now you can pick on sound and picture quality. Yet again you need to keep the time of production and copy quality in mind.
2-0 out of 5 stars Certainly not Brecht
I've seen the movie version of this, one of the best scores and scripts created in the "musical theatre genre." While Lotte Lenya and the supporting cast are very good, this version is hardly true to Brecht or hisstyle. Apparently Brecht did not understand that by selling the screenrights to the script, he was also giving the producers liscence to dowhatever the wanted with it - and he had no power over it. The endind isnotably changed from any translation you are likely to find in print, andfew of the best songs remain - as a matter of fact, i recall only aboutfour or five songs in the film verison. Mr. And Mrs. Peachum, whilewonderfully portrayed, are far from the middle-class underlords we lovethem to be - they were a mismatched pair, Mrs. Peachum in a fabulous dress, and drop earings, and Peachum looking like one of his beggars. Ainteresting note, though: MacHeath's gang are adorable, fun and very willplayed!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what the title promises
This is a far cry from the stage version with not only several songs missing but what seems to be a rewrite of the script and book. The acting is pre-1931--as one history of cinema puts its, a style we will never seeagain--and the film techniques are from the silent days. But it has somepowerful moments, mostly when the Streetsinger is on screen. Among thevisual highlights are the confrontation of the Army of Poor with the Queen(who looks too old to be Victoria), the marriage of Polly and Mack amongthe purloined furniture and trappings, and the marvelous resolution of theex-police chief Brown, Mack, and Peachem becoming "respectable"bankers (i.e., thieves). So this is worth a good deal as a social documentis but is not worth much as a musical event. (Question: if all the signs ofthe shops are in English, why do the Poor carry signs in German?) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Masterpiece
A truly dark, mezmorising & compelling film,Overflowing with atmosphere & layered with thought provoking content. Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal"(1958) is the definition of masterful film making. An eerie unsettling dream-like or nightmarish crawl through a pitch black tunnel with only a single grain of light at the end. This one stays with you whether you like it or not. A must for the true lover of cinema!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Film
Ingmar Bergman's legendary film "The Seventh Seal" winds up on almost every critic's "Favorite Movies" list, is one of the first twenty movies to be put in The Criterion Collection (#11), and is, actually, a really good movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars try this without sound or sub-titles
Yes, I have seen Seventh Seal many times, and it is, indeed, stark.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best foreign film I've seen.
La Strada (The Road) is a heartbreaking and beautiful film. Anthony Quinn plays a heartless and cruel Circus performer, he treats his traveling campanion with absolute disgust, he bullies her, he treats her like a pawn, but the ending is so sad. You come to the conclusion that Zampano (Quinn) did care about this woman but of course it is too late to make amends and beg her for forgiveness. Great and timeless classic, you have to see this, just brilliant and real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Italian film from the Fifties
This is one of my favorite films of all time. This Criterion Collection release only made me appreciate it more by providing a view of Fellini's perspective (personal interview per Italian television documentary), and behind the scenes footage of Fellini's work (both in the special features section). Along with an interview with Martin Scorsese who is obviously indebted in some way to Fellini as a mentor and inspirational teacher/film-maker.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fellini's masterpiece about love and brutality

4-0 out of 5 stars funny!
it was my first time to watch a silent movie and i thought this movie was quite fun!this movie is based on the time frame that when Japan's economy grew and more people moved to a big city to work; emergence of white collar workers.the ordinal family decided to move outside the city in order to live closer to father's boss.the story tells us how kids encounter this change and society.5-0 out of 5 stars Silent Japanese Film??? I'm kidding, right?
No Kidding, if you have any sense of humour you'll love this film. Now I am an admitted Ozu film lover, which means I find his unique cinematography of a camera that isn't darting all over the place and shots at low levels that make you feel like you are standing (or sitting) there watching what is going on, a very enjoyable way of viewing a film.5-0 out of 5 stars One of Ozu's best films
It is a shame that the availability of Ozu films is not more widespread. 'I Was Born But...' exemplifies the concern for family relationships by one of the great masters of Japanese cinema. This film being silent should notbe seen as an obstacle (nor should any silent film). It echoes the charmingpathos and humour one might expect from a Charlie Chaplin classic. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bunuel's religious comedy

5-0 out of 5 stars The Buuelian irreverence!
Once more the prodigal son of Calanda makes a very intelligent and carefully satire, cynical and ironic gaze about the religion and its collateral implications when decides to make an extraordinary semblance about certain dogmatic incoherencies and insane behavior as the funny sequence in which Jesus decides to cut his hair but Maria avoids it as any fashion adviser, or the use of nut who assumes the role of a priest discussing about religion in a miserable bar through a true tour de force script. A road movie that will lead us to Santiago de Compostela and besides will interweave past and present where out of mind characters who will make you laugh and reflect. Not for squeamish tastes or sensible spirits.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Joyful Romp Through Heresies Of The Ages
I agree with everything the other reviewer wrote. However, he did neglect to mention how FUNNY "The Milky Way" is.Even, the title is a bit of a kick, evoking as it does for Americans our galaxy and a candy bar, and which in the movie refers to the road to Santiago (St. James) de Campostella, where St. James is not buried!Theology students would really appreciate some of this, especially the sword-fight/theological debate. Get it. See it. Love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is simply sublime poetry !
The script involves us in the XV Century when the devil forces will fight hardly to imposse its will .
5-0 out of 5 stars Marcel does the Middle Ages
As a huge fan of the works of Marcel Carne and Jacques Prevert, it is unfortunate to learn that other than 'Children of Paradise', none of their works are available on DVD. However, it is at least some consolation when you find that they are still in print on VHS. Considering that one of the finest films of all time, 'L'Atalante' by genius Jean Vigo has gone out of print on video, and that no one has bothered to put it back on the shelves, I must say that for such old French classics such as this one to still be around is a fact worth commending.
