"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" 5-0 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Is Alive!
Caveat: This is the TCM 75th anniversary edition of one film -- Frankenstein. This is NOT the legacy box set! That said -- this is a spectacular presentation of James Whale's Frankenstein remastered, fully restored and with a stereo soundtrack. And yes -- the scene where the monster drowns the little girl is back. Also back is the line where Dr. Frankenstein proclaims, "Now I know what it feels like to be God." Karloff is stunning. Colin Clive is edgy and frighteningly intense. The accompanying documentaries and trailers are fascinating, particularly the almost 2-hour feature on disc two, "Universal Horror", a retrospective of the horror films released by Universal Studios. A must for any DVD library as this is one of the greatest horror films of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Universal Horror Masterpiece
After Bela Lugosi became a movie star playing Dracula, he was offered the role of the Frankenstein monster, but turned it down & so a other horror movie star emerged, Boris Karloff as the manufactured mistunderstood monster, truly one of the greatest horror films of all time, Karloff brings terrifying perfection to the role. A great non dialogue performance. A masterpiece of how science can be misused. If you like classic universal horror see Mary Shelley's shocking novel story in the motion picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Well, we've warned you!"
All movies are dated. Some are more dated than others, of course.A film's dated quality can be its strength as well as its weakness.Much film criticism has surrounded the primitive techniques used in 1931's "Dracula" and "Frankenstein".Lack of musical score, obvious use of studio sets, theatrical acting, pedestrian use of the camera, etc.Yet I would argue that these qualities are what make these films unique and give them a dream-like, nightmarish quality, which the later, slicker and more polished sequels lacked. The sound of the Frankenstein monster's footsteps coming down the hall before his entrance, the thumping of the dirt being thrown atop the coffin in the opening sequence, all would be lost had they been interpolated in a musical score. The same goes for "Dracula"'s scattering rats, bats and night creatures among the clacking bones in the coffins.Granted, the later "Bride of Frankenstein" brilliantly used music and a far more sophisticated film technique to unfold its story, yet it was a completely different piece of art.It was much more operatic and complex and full of irony and satire as well as horror.Whereas "Bride" gave us thrills, "Frankenstein" gave us chills.

Made in 1964, but set in 12th-century England, this is the fact-based story of Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dear friend, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Richard Burton). When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Becket cries out for DVD release
I just don't understand why this gem of a movie hasn't yet been released on DVD. I am a teacher of English Literature in a college in Bangalore, India, and when I talk to my students about the European Middle Ages, I strongly recommend this film. I tell them that they cannot get a better introduction to the great issues of that era than what this superb film gives them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting...waiting...waiting...for the DVD
I watched my VHS widescreen version of "Becket" last night and was as impressed as ever with the solid excellence of every aspect of the performance except for the obvious one that it is only available on VHS -- not DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars my God...
this movie seriously needs to be on DVD. i don't understand why it's not! the acting- superb. historical facts and settings presented in a very entertaining fashion. humor. deep love-hate psychology that takes masters to manifest perfectly. these people transcended their acting to another level. i could watch it over and over! This is an outstanding movie--probably one of the best of all time--and who CARES if that's because the screenplay was adapted from an even better book?Aren't movies usually disappointing compared to the book when it's a bookworm doing the review? The MOVIE is what's being reviewed here.IMHO, reviews based on "the book is better" should be automatically deleted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent movie, great performance by Cliff Robertson
The principal strength of this movie is the acting by Cliff Robertson. This was an exceptionally challenging role, that required a real breadth of acting style to portray the changes that the protagonist went through. The oscar was well deserved. The story moves along well and you feel the pathos of the two main characters. Some of the minor characters are very one-dimensional and not well acted to boot. The movie shows some of the influences of the late sixties when it was produced, but many of the underlying issues such as treatment of the mentally challenged and medical experimentation are still quite current.

Editorial Review

One of the most ferociously iconoclastic and experimental films of the French New Wave, Alain Resnais's 1961 feature, winner of the grand prize at that year's Venice Film Festival, is based on a script by Alain Robbe-Grillet. At its center is what seems to be a simple but unanswerable puzzle: Did its protagonist (Giorgio Albertazzi) have an affair the year before with a woman (Delphine Seyrig) he just met (or possibly re-met) at his hotel? The inquiry becomes an unsettling experiment in flattening the dimensions of past, present, and future so that any difference between them becomes meaningless, while Resnais's coldly formal but oddly dreamlike geometric compositions make space itself seem a function of subjective memory. Add to that Resnais's trademark tracking shots--long, smooth, a visual correlative of a wordless feeling--and this is a film that truly gets under the skin in almost inexplicable ways. One of the most influential works of its time. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look, the Emperor is naked!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unutterable elegance
Whatever this is about, once you've seen it, you'll know you've seen something. What I mean is, whatever else you've ever seen, this is something else. Setting aside the helpful and fascinating extra features that came with my disc, by someone called Ginette Vincendeau, and suspending any attempt at prosaic understanding while watching, soak up the incomparable sensation of atmosphere, the sonorous sounds, the stunning sights, the sublimely stylish manner in which the images unroll. It almost makes the effort of interpretation unnecessary. But then, watch it again, and listen to all the explanations offered on all sides: hardly anyone can help coming up with their own ideas. And they are almost all different, since every viewpoint will alter the perspective of any object. There's the viewer who tells us it's actually the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. That long, tall, thin fellow is Death, who could lose, but always wins. This place is Limbo: the Underworld, where memory is erased, and time and place have no meaning, make no sense.Couldbe. Why does Death say he could lose? Answer: Amor Vincit Omnia. There are slight hints of Cinderella and her slipper; or the awakening of the Sleeping Beauty. The Life Force defeating Death and escaping from his dreary clasp. This is partly what Ginette puts forward. But she admits, I think, that this is too mechanical a reading; like the marionette-like dance, and the empty pleasantries of the half-heard conversations. This is a game, within a play, within a film, within a theatre, or on an unanticipated dvd. These people exist at one of civilization's high points, the eighteenth century enlightenment, baroque at the point of rococo, where order is everything, yet giving way to distortion. Or else they are an image of everyday life, its forms and conventions: this is a dateless reality of actually unrealized desires. Watch it a third time, and it becomes erotic. It is the product of a totally European sensibility, a specifically Franco-Germanic sensibility: America is far too adolescent a society ever to have created anything to equal it, in spite of Ginette's instancing Hitchcock, and Kubrick's "The Shining" --- which is lamentably feeble in its supposed emulation. It is easy to recognize genius: you know that however hard you might try, you would never come up with anything to match it.

3-0 out of 5 stars sunk in time after 46 years
Surely the film was very brave experiment by Resnais (the director) in 1961 (French "new wave"), introducing to cinematography what Joyce and Proust pioneered in literature at beginning of 20th century. Thus, the film is a great contribution to what we call the FORM rather than the content. That's why I rated it with 3 stars, not just one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this movie on DVD?
I must agree with one of the previous reviewers. I think it's ridiculous that this great classic version of A Midsummer Night's Dream isn't available on DVD.I own only a VHS tape that I recorded from television and would much prefer the movie on DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Occassionally, a rare and beautiful film becomes avavailable for those with discrimnating taste! I agree that this film is more than worthy of being published on dvd. Taking into account the age of the movie, the effects are amazing! Mickey Rooney is gorgeous as "Puck". Even James Cagney as "Bottom" is outstanding. I can't rave on enough about this film and encourage anyone to see a simply delightful and glorious feast for the eyes. Cocteau's beauty and the beast was filmed about the same era and is an inspiration to directors such as Ridley Scott (Legend, Aliens) As an artist, myself, I pull inspiration and beauty from older movies that today's directors have to fool around with because of the lack of vision and no original ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Review, a Rant
There's something absolutely imbecilic about this not being available on DVD. I mean, Criterion, Kino, those jerks that supply Wal Mart with crappy dollar DVDs, anybody! Bad enough we had to wait years for the Brando Julius Caesar (apparently coming out soon, finally!). What are they waiting for?

5-0 out of 5 stars How many ways are there to say "excellent?"
I love this movie! I was knocked out by director Pakula's interpretation of the book. He (and Tad Mosel, the screenwriter) fleshed it out considerably and added dimension and depth to the characters without once bypassing any of the book's tone and purpose. There is much to be lauded about this movie. First, of course, is Sandy Dennis's flawless portrayal of Sylvia Barrett. Dennis imparted considerable pathos and emotion to the young, idealistic teacher. The other parts were perfectly cast, right down to Jose Rodriguez (which is his name in the book, his name in the movie, and his real name, to boot!). There is no sex, no bad language, no nudity-- nothing that current films are so rife with. This was back when movie makers had to rely on their imagination, education, and sensitivity to put together an excellent movie. Not like today, where things tawdry and gruesome and depressing are featured and sensibility is empty and meaningless. See this movie-- you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis, And Only Dennis
It's hard to believe this role wasn't written for Sandy Dennis.Of course, the film is derived from the classic book about an idealistic young teacher on her first job, confronted with street-wise students in her first year.5-0 out of 5 stars Sandy Dennis at her best...
Sandy Dennis in her role as high school teacher Sylvia Barrett is truly magnificent!!! She outshines every other actor or actress in the movie. She does not overact - instead, she strikes one by her flawless presentation of an initially overtaxed teacher who develops towards an inspiring person, not only for her pupils, but also for those who watch the film with the intention to become a teacher her- or himself, as I do. What I appreciate especially about Up the down staircase is that with a minimum of special effects or dramatic events, a realistic portrayal of school life is achieved - from the teacher's as well as from the pupil's point of view. Dennis herself ranks among the most underrated Hollywood actresses, but like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the film Up the down staircase stands as one of her masterpieces and prove that back in 1992, when she died of ovarian cancer, America lost one of its most gifted and unique actresses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best, but I'm Conservative
This is my favorite movie of all time. Why can't people get it in DVD? I've been waiting years!
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Through Life As A Stranger . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sweet but cynical, this Robert Mulligan film seems strangely modern despite its slightly dated plot (illegal, back-alley abortions, thank goodness that's something we no longer have to worry about). Natalie Wood, scoring her third and final Oscar nomination, and Steve McQueen, in their only on-screen pairing, shine in their realistic, touching portrayals as two working class Italian-Americans who find themselves in a dilemma after a one-night stand. Angie (Wood) is pregnant, and Rocky (McQueen), attempts to help her to pay for termination of the unwanted pregnancy. Things don't go as planned, and he finds himself in the middle of a conflict between Angie and her protective brother, Dominick (Hershal Bernardi), when Angie refuses to marry him. Although the viewer knows that they are right for each other, the pair maintain a defiance against the attraction, refusing to give into romanticism which could have turned the film into a forgettable, sappy love story. Their naturalistic and cynical views on love and marriage give this movie the bite and redeeming qualities that keeps it afloat. Strikingly photographed in black and white, against the gritty New York backdrop, with wonderful, elegant but simple costumes by Edith Head, Wood and McQueen both give perhaps the best performances of their careers. Bernardi, as Angie's overprotective brother, is a lovable annoyance, while Tom Bosley, as Angie's would-be suitor, Columbo, brings an endearing comic relief (clumsy!), and his sisters and that mother of his - classic Italian mama! The same can be said for Angie's occasionally hysterical, traditional, guilt-inducing mother - "Go and be a mother in America! Day and night you watch her, day and night! You take her here, you meet her there, you wait all day, afraid that some lunatic might grab her in the street!" Or, my personal favorite, "Yes, in my grave, I'm going to rest!" Edie Adams, billed third but in a rather small (but showy) role, is fantastic as the showgirl Barb, in her classic early 60s apartment and her little doggies - great reaction expression when she finds Angie using her shower!
5-0 out of 5 stars A DVD must
Both Wood and Mcqueen are at their absolute best in this love story that translates into any era. Why do we have to wait for movies of this calibre to appear on DVD, when the studies release so much rubbish that nobody wants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood 'wow' with a religious twist
The first reviewer, Mr. Burgraff, said it best: It's DeMille,
5-0 out of 5 stars Ma favourite
Unlike man's law, nearly 3,000 years ago, Moses was handed God's law -- the Ten Commandments. They are the expressions of the mind of God for his creations;they are the charter and guide of humanity, for there can be no humanity without the law. The Ten Commandments are as modern today as when they were first handed to Moses on Sinai since the struggle between the forces represented by Moses and those represented by Pharaoh is still being waged today. This movie questions whether man should be ruled by God's laws or whether man is to be ruled by the whims of man, Rameses. Is man the property of the State or is man a free soul under God? DeMille believed the message of The Ten Commandments had important personal, social, cultural, and political implications. But what is the real story behind The Ten Commandments? There are different, and sometimes contradictory, biblical accounts of Moses on the Mount. The historical context of these laws are: adultery, perjury, murder, theft, graven images, Sabbath laws, and coveting. What did they mean then? And do they mean anything today? Over the years, many laws, beliefs, and civilizations had rose and fell, but from ancient times to modern times, the definitions, the laws, and morality of the Ten Commandments have never changed. Which leads to my question. What would life be like if Moses never received these ten laws? Deville's final film as a director won the Oscar for best picture, best effects, best art direction, best cinematography, best costume design, best editing, and best sound. It is my favourite movie of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Katherine Orrison's DVD Commentary on the silent Ten Commandments
I wanted to just put this in for those who might be interested. In the DVD commentary on the silent Ten Commandments by Katherine Orrison, she says that the poem on which the female character (in the present day section)has written her "Goodbye" suicide note is probably important but she hasn't time to look it up. I did.It was relatively easy with a quick computer search. The poem that the note is written on is Helas by Oscar Wilde. She was quite correct that it had direct meaning for what was happening in the film at that moment. At this moment of greatest dispair and just before her return to religious belief, this is the poem used.

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it
I've watched this classic whenever I could find it on TV. I enjoyed the chemistry between Taylor and Darcel. And, ofcourse, the women...As the charactors go through the trials of the trip, you Know that you too, would've said "Not me!"

5-0 out of 5 stars another oldie but goodie
Here is another oldie but goodie from the early '50's. Good story, acting and great B/W photography. One could go on at length about the fine points of this film, but the main thing is, just get it!! This is a definite "classic" and deserves a place in any movie library! Robert Taylor is at the top of his form as usual, providing enough conflict to keep one interested. Hope Emerson and the Asian boy, "Ito," provide a balance of humor that gives one a light-hearted break. I just wish it was on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty
I know, maybe we are used to seeing "Robert Taylor" in a certian setting when it come to movies, but this one has a good story behind it and a good cast of women coming out of the norm to reach cross country to their awaited future husbnads and home, but it's what goes on on the way to their destination that makes it real good.

Editorial Review

This reverential, well-crafted 1951 biopic starring the hulky Burt Lancaster as Native American Olympian Thorpe is hardly the definitive word on one of our greatest track stars, but it does remind us how unfair and demeaning it once was for athletes of color. Concentrating on Thorpe's track and football victories (he also excelled at boxing, swimming, and golf), director Michael Curtiz and screenwriters Douglas Morrow and Everett Freeman (working from Thorpe's autobiography) chart their hero's rise from reservation poverty to Carlisle College track star to 1912 Olympic decathlon/pentathlon winner. Thorpe was stripped of his medals when it was learned that he had taken a few bucks as a football player. Lancaster is even better at playing Thorpe in the depths of drunkenness and despair than in his jock heyday.Charles Bickford is Pop Warner, the legendary coach who encouraged Thorpe to go for the gold, and Phyllis Thaxter appears as the athlete's supportive wife. Thorpe, who served as technical adviser, died two years after this film was released. Thirty years later, the International Olympic Committee overturned the earlier ruling and returned Thorpe's medals to his family. "What does it mean now?" a bitter Lancaster was quoted as saying at the time. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A True American
The title "All-American" was rarely applied to one who truly was an American and was one of the greatest athletes of all time.Jim Thorpe was a Native American, often called an Indian because of Columbus' original mistake that the natives he encountered in the New World were residents of India, not an entirely new and unknown land. This remarkable 1951 film was one of the rare looks at a Native American who not only earned the title "All-American" but built a reputation as an outstanding athlete. The film makes it clear, too, that he was successful in every sport he tried, often amazing those who thought they knew him.
5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/4 stars for a great slice of american history
This film certainly has limits: none of the performances are overwhelmingly good, there are too many white people playing natives, and the story sometimes borders on the formulaic. But with that said, do yourself a favor and see it.4-0 out of 5 stars Whats wrong with this picture?

"Whats wrong with this picture"?Jim Thorpe should have been named as the best as is appearent by his accomplishments in several sports.Did Ali win the decathalon or the Pentathalon...25 total events. Was Ali a champion football and baseball player? How can anyone who excels at only one sport be called the greatest of the century...whats wrong with this picture? 4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Adaptation of a Classic
This is an excellent adaptation of Fenimore Cooper's classic about the French and Indian War - superior, I think, to the much more violent Daniel Day Lewis version. The cast members give strong performances and there is a great deal of dramatic tension.I shall never forget the scene where Heather Angel leaps off a cliff to escape the murderous Magua. My only complaint is that the film is not available on a quality DVD.I hope that is soon remedied.Highly recommended for fans of the genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Economic and Entertaining
The excellent review by F.J. Harvey sums up what I intended to address regarding this film. For me, it is much more enjoyable than the 1993 Daniel Day Lewis film although that movie was by no means poorly done. I am always impressed by screenplays that successfully present a lot of information and are able to tell the story all in a relatively brief running time. Historical adventures of the 1930s, in American cinema, usually appear as novels come-to-life. The camera angles, costumes, lighting, black and white photography, etc. all come together in a way that suggests illustrations found in book editions of the late 19th and early 20th century. This 1936 version of "The Last of the Mohicans" is one of these movies, and I highly recommend it as viewing especially during the holiday season.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robust version of the classic tale
Many people -especially I suspect younger ones -will come to this movie after the lavish Michael Mann version of the book that came out in the early nineties and starred Daniel Day -Lewis .They may find this more modest 1936 black and white picture a bit quaint by contrast but for my money it is an exciting and crisply made movie in its own right.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Santa Vittoria
An excellent, excellent, excellent movie. Anthony Quinn should have won the Oscar. Anna Magnani is at her best. And Hardy Kruger underrated as always is the German officer who still has a humane aspect. A true delight of a film

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure
This is a must see movie that is a true Anthony Quinn classic. And all the actors are great in this movie that is both hilarious and dramatic since it takes place during the Second World War.I, and many of my friends and family, would love to see this movie come on DVD. I could see this movie over and over again and never get tired of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Santa Vittoria.
A very good movie, an excellent performance by Anthony Quinn! I also read the book and the movie compliments it. I really wish this movie would be available on DVD for European format. Is anybody out there to hear this? ... Read more

Editorial Review

John F. Kennedy lived long enough to see this Hollywood account of his Navy career and his heroism following a ruthless attack by a Japanese ship on his small patrol craft. Cliff Robertson is an amiable choice to play Kennedy, though one won't find a lot of the late president's mannerisms in his performance. The key battle sequence, which finds Kennedy and his crew bloodied and battered while trying to stay alive in shark-infested waters, makes a big impression on young viewers. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding movie about fine man, and very good future President!
The absolute best performance of actor
4-0 out of 5 stars Saved his crew and then the world
For those who have seen this film Barney Ross (Robert Culp) was a source of humor to the PT Men. While this is not played up in the film, the PT Boat brotherhood got Barney a part in the picture as a CPO whom the young jg Kennedy pours cleaning fluid on by mistake. Early in the film when the crew is renovating the boat the actual Barney Ross is the chief telling JFK about sea pearls.

Editorial Review

This minor 1955 work by Alfred Hitchcock, one of the lighter entries of his creative peak in the 1950s, is still imbued with the master's stock themes of shared guilt and romantic ambivalence. It is also hardly lacking in Hitchcockian cinematic inventiveness, such as a famous, often-imitated sequence in which some smooching between stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly is intercut with a fireworks show that just happens to be going on outside in a Riviera setting. Grant plays a reformed cat burglar who is suspected of reviving his trade, though he knows someone else is using his old methods. A very enjoyable experience, but don't get this confused with Hitchcock's other Cary Grant film of that decade, which was a masterpiece: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good edition of the movie.
Everybody knows the plot of this movie. So, I can't add anything in that respect. However, I can tell you that the quality of the DVD is very good. Clear picture and sound - great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hitchcock's Combo Platter: Style, Suspense and Comedy
This is Hitch's least "heady" film -- the sheer physical beauty of Grace Kelly in her prime, Cary Grant in his, and the French Mediterranean in its, they all conspire to confound intellectualization. The screen seems slick with the vapors of the stars' physical luminosity.
4-0 out of 5 stars To Catch a Thief
You don't get much better than Cary Grant, Grace Kelly and Alfred and Edith Head.Full of fun, danger, and suspence, this suspenceful thriller shows how Hollywood used to make a romantic movie. Alas, can one imagine how this movie would be made today? All guns, car chases and explicit sex and very little plot! Let us be glad we have means of saving these classics for our future entertainment!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sodom and Gommorrah
The movie was astounding, well put together and of awesome quality. I would treasure it for years to come

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Hollywood Version Of The Famous Biblical Story
Even for those people not familiar with the stories contained in the Old Testament, when the names Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned a vivid image will always spring to mind of a world full of vice, sexual depravity, and wickedness. The twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah embodied all these human failings and were a natural for the Hollywood film makers to latch on to as subject material once the "sword and sandal", movie craze gripped Hollywood in the late 1950's and early 60's. In fact this story was a natural for filmmakers of this period and contains everything that an epic movie lover like myself could ask for; lavish sets, court intrigue, well staged sword fights, unbridled passion and romance, all wrapped up in beautiful colour photography using actual locations to really enhance the unfolding story. By 1960's epic standards "Sodom and Gomorrah",is a relatively big budget international production that expands on the original story contained in the Bible but amazingly tends to tone down the sex and sin side of it while still being highly entertaining. I only viewed this film for the first time over Easter and I was surprised at how for the most part it avoided many of the more immoral elements of the story. Another production of 3 years later "The Bible: In The Beginning", directed by John Huston is much more explicit in showing the depravity and vice of the twin cities, which makes it an interesting companion piece to this lavish production.
