5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for THIS??
OK, so it ISN'T "Citizen Kane"!
5-0 out of 5 stars When is the widescreen DVD coming?
I would love to see this film either on widescreen DVD or at a revival house screening somewhere.Anybody who knows this movie is probably familiar with its production background: George Pal wanted to make a larger scale movie about Atlantis but MGM didn't give him the budget he needed; leftover footage from "Quo Vadis" was used in the final scenes when Atlantis is destroyed; Anthony Hall (actually the Italian singer Sal Ponti) and Joyce Taylor apparently weren't strong enough actors to avoid being somewhat upstaged by Edward Platt and John Dall, whose campy arrogance as the corrupt warlord is a pleasure to behold; and finally, scenes of flying soldiers were not included in the final film when they tested poorly in test screenings.Still, this film holds some real treasures: Paul Frees' somber narration before the titles, the powerful Atlantis theme by Russell Garcia, the amazing fish-shaped submarine, that fantastic crystal death-ray weapon, and most of all, the striking depiction of an ancient, technologically advanced but corrupt civilization that was destroyed by a volcano.Perhaps the fact that this is still the most well-known Atlantis movie is an indication of its strengths.

4-0 out of 5 stars ATLANTIS: The Found Continent...
This second-string effort by sci-fi master George Pal(TIME MACHINE; WAR of the WORLDS)nevertheless deserves a pride-of-place on the pantheon of fantasy classics.Granted, acting by Anthony Hall and Joyce Taylor as Romeo & Juliet of Antediluvian Atlantean Empire is delectably and detectably bogus. But much of A,the Lost C,is B+ entertainment. The story is good. Without pretense,it evokes Platonic myth of Legendary Lost Continent;and Biblical causus Dei belli/wrath,detailed in Scripture concerning The Great Flood .The Mighty Men--the original Aryan Master Race--have gotten too big for their britches. But"before the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were opened and the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights(Genesis 7:11-12). George Pals'APOCALYPSE THEN treats uncritical viewers to a classy clash between World War mongering John Dall(Laurence Oliver's exiled-for-SPQR Legion Commander-incompetence homie in SPARTACUS);and Atlantis High priest,Edward Platt who sagely warns them to GET SMART.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed!
This movie is a gen from the golden age of moviemaking. Anthony Hope's story comes to life with strong performances by some of the greatest actors of the 30s. Madeleine Carroll is heart-breakingly beautiful as Princess Flavia and Douglas Fairbanks, jr. almost steals the show as the rascal/villain Rupert of Hentzau.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great forgotten Classic
I'm baffled as to why this hasn't been brought out on DVD yet, considering the amount of shoddy films from this and later periods that have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
I enjoyed this movie immensely. Ronald Colman did an excellent job in his dual role, and all the supporting actors were well chosen. I don't agree with other opinions that Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. stole the show. I do agree that the final duel was magnificently done! It had all the hallmarks of 30's swashbucklers, including witty dialogue and shots where the camera shows the shadows of the men fighting. This movie proves that a viewer can be entertained without the extraneous offensive elements they put in movies today. Over all, this is a great classic that I want to add to my library! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I heart Ben and Me
Although I found Amos to be a little anthropomorphic, he functions as an excellent literary device to add comedy to an otherwise perhaps boring autobiography. While Amos probably did not write the first sentence of the Declaration, it seems quite likely, judging from recent historical findings, that he did indeed invent bifocals. Anyway this movie is da bomb!!! LOL!!11!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The movie was good.
Boy, it's astounding how many "11-year old viewers" on Amazon are so surprisingly literate and exacting in writing reviews. You'd think that maybe it was just an adult trying to pass themselves off for whatever reason, but no, certainly, it couldn't be that. Besides, we all know how much concern the average pre-teen has for accurate portrayals of historical figures in film.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment----
Though I was optimistic when I started the movie, I was soon appalled to see the way it portrayed Ben Franklin.Ben Franklin was a famous inventor, not a befuddled old man who can barely remember his own name! His 'Poor Richard's Almanac' was very popular, but this movie made it sound boring and unnecessary.Right from the point that Amos arrived in Ben Franklin's shop, he was helping him.Ben Franklin invented bifocals and the Franklin stove on his own, but here Amos is said to have come up with both! And in the incident where Ben Franklin flies the kite in the storm, the real scientific purpose is never even mentioned.Instead, Amos is again in the spotlight, put out at being a part of one of Ben's "silly experiments."The story suggests that Benjamin Franklin can't manage anything without the help of the mouse. And towards the end of the story, when AMOS is shown to have been the writer of the beginning of the Delcaration of Independence I couldn't believe my eyes!I couldn't and still can't believe how much they omitted or changed the real history, to show Amos as the hero in every situation.Educational and Historical? It might make a good animated film for kids just to watch for pleasure, but if you're looking for an educational video this is the wrong place to go! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A cult silent epic movie!
This is an exciting silent drama, featuring one of the most emotive aerial sequences for those ages, with superb photography. A true homage to the brave pilots of the WW1. William Wellman' finest film, made with courageous and honor' s sense. The first awarded film makes for you an absolute must-see.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Great American Classic Film
If you were only to ever sit down to watch one silent film - Wings should be that film.I have a VHS copy and have taken to watching it judiciously just to preserve the tape. This needs to be out on DVD!The plot is elegant and well thought out.If anyone has convinced you that you can't tell a complex story without a lot of dialogue, just show them this masterpiece to shut them up.I'm sure that Lucas must have been a fan of Wings when I watch the X-wing fighter sequences in the Star Wars films.Even so, Lucas didn't do as good a job as these folks did back in the 1920's.The flying is brilliant, the actors do most of their own flying and stunt work, and the emotion is startling and powerful.Watch Wings, and then be prepared to reevaluate every film you've ever seen - this is a true masterwork.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit above average, I guess.
Well, here is exactly the type of silent film that most people do not watch nowadays; it's neither a comedy like the Charlie Chaplin movies, nor a horror film like Nosferatu. This, instead, is a typical American action/drama flick, with ample quantities of both.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So where's the DVD?
This great comedy is about two modern-day hard-luck cowboys who are always getting into a bind, and when they do, their boss is always there to bail them out of their trouble ... and into his debt (hence the name "Rounders"). As a result, they always owe him money, and to pay him back, they have to do the jobs no one else will. Paticularly funny are the scenes with the two air-head women they encounter toward the end. A great movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars THE ROUNDERS-THE ORIGINAL
I'n not talking of Matt Damon's "The rounders"..I'm taking about two great Hollywood ALL STARS...GLENN FORD & HENRY FONDA...with CHILL WILLS..their bossman!!This is a mordern day western with pure crayiness..about two cowpokes breaking in horses to live.

4-0 out of 5 stars Northwest Passage - The Movie's Version.
I first saw this picture when I was 10 or 11 years old (shortly after it was released). I thought it was great. I had not, at that time, read Kenneth Roberts' book, so I didn't realize how much they had changed it in order to make the movie. After reading the book (shortly after seeing the movie), I enjoyed the book even more. Re-seeing the movie at intervals through the years I have not felt that it was diminished by the changes made for the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great gritty movie!
This is a highly realistic, action packed film that delivers.Tracy is great, Walter Brennan is terricif and Robert Young was never better. The action is superb, the cinematography excellent and the story compelling.A must see gem!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Northwest Passage Is P.I. with a big however. We
must not judge this movie on our terms. It is what it is. It involves three distinct eras. The movie takes place, in the 1750's. It was made in 1940 & we are viewing it today more than 60 years after that. The colonists, Americans, were subservient toBritish rule of law.Colonist in turn, hated most Indians & treated them as less than human, a nuisance to be eliminated. It appears that the movie got Major Robert Rodger correct. He was a bloodthirsty butcher of Indians. Why? Because they fought back. What choice was there? Anyway, did Spencer Tracy ever make a bad movie? He is superb. Did Rodgers have a vision of Manifest Destiny, on his own, 50 years before the Founding Fathers, as the movie suggests? Probably not. His men, Rodger's Rangers, were cutthroat Indian killers, independent & not fit for polite society. They made money on the number of scalps, men, woman, children or French they could sell to the British. They were loyal to Rodgers & would die for him. Robert Young does a good job also. He is a bit of a cipher & he joins the Rangers as an outsider. Historically I'm not sure his character ever existed but he moves the story forward. Walter Brennon does his usual fine work as the sidekick.

3-0 out of 5 stars How Green Is Your Grinch?
I was quite disheartened when I purchased the previous DVD release of How the Grinch Stole Christmas to find a yellowish grinch in the video transfer. It is most certainly my intention to purchase the upcoming release in the hopes that this problem has been corrected but what exactly is the story on the contents of this release. Are we supposed to believe that this is a 26 minute running time release with no other contents on 2 DVDs? What exactly are we getting here and what is the growing problem among manufacturers who remain tight-lipped about product content prior to the release date?

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Family Classic
I recently purchased the DVD of Dr. Seuss - How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is the third generation in my family to derive such enjoyment from the ORIGINAL Dr. Seuss classic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of DVD To Kill a Mockingbird
The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all time great romantic comedies
As romantic comedies go,"The April Fools" is one of the undiscovered treasures of the 1960s, comparable to the vanguard of all New York romantic comedies "Breakfast At Tiffany's". This film is far more simplistic (too simplistic it seems for many reviewers in 1969) and perhaps because of this it will strike more of a chord with today's audiences weary of recent ponderous comedies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Return On Investment
Until this decade, "Executive Suite" was rarely shown on TV, for good reason. The building crescendo of human expectations would get side-railed and it would appear boring to the non-accountants. This is a wonderful send-up from Cameron Hawley, who also wrote "Cash McCall,"(scheduled for re-make), which tackled those leverage-buyout sharks in the 50's. Both were written at a time when business was rewarding for all ranks of life and a man could still spin an idealistic yarn, without targeting the lowest common denominator. Two cast members, Dean Jagger and Nina Foch appear in both movies playing minor, though important characters. I give this film high marks for answering two questions: Is a company the sum of its parts, or is it just the leadership? What is the purpose of a corporation? How prescient this film was, that the leaders today can not re-invent themselves without going overseas. Louis Calhern, Paul Douglas, Frederick March and Barbara Stanwyck must have realized they would be taking a stand on a way of life that should not vanish.Having worked in an accounting office and seen what one insignificant death in a company can launch within, I found this to be extremely fascinating for the human drives, conscious and unconscious, that corporate maneuvering drops on the corporate animal. When William Holden's character, very human and honest, testifies at the climax, the board meeting, by revealing his personal philosophy to win a concensus, there is tremendous release, because you feel he is speaking for humanity, if it cares about the future. Sadly, we know, that the nouveau ceo's have swung to epitimize the character of Frederick March, self-aggrandizing,low and soul-less.It succeeds without a music score, building upon its tight script, with room for another Shelly Winters cameo. Nina Foch, plays her role as the career executive secretary with great strength, decency and smarts. All the characters were nicely drawn, fleshed out. You could tell that by the way they all learned from one another and were grateful for it. If people work together, there's enough for all, even at the top. Isn't that a refreshing idea?

5-0 out of 5 stars Packs a Punch
Show the last ten minutes of this film to anyone who doesn't have genuine passion for their work. It's a blockbuster sequence. William Holden's character, imbued with rampant energy and idealism, is just the tonic his ailing company needs, and while the ending of this film is predictable, it is also exceptionally powerful and makes wonderful viewing. Paul Douglas gives a nicely nuanced performance that epitomizes the middling, cautious attitudes of some real-life senior managers.

3-0 out of 5 stars rural sprawl
edna ferber was never able to transfer very well from page to screen (see "ice palace", "so big", "cimarron", either "show boat"), but the movies all were entertaining.this george stevens production stars rock hudson, liz taylor, and james dean in the saga of competing texas billionaires.its a sprawling mess but individual moments (to be truthful, mostly from dean) are so good as to make it always worth a viewing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Giant acting, current issues.
The actors are all superb in this extraordinary film about the issue of bigotry with regard to Mexican-Americans, women and the poor. There is not even a hint of melodrama in the portrayals of either the villains or the heroes, making it a film that I never tire of watching. The issue of bigotry is just as relevant today as it was in 1956 when the movie was made and in 1952 when the book was published.James Dean reveals his true range of acting ability in his portrayal of Jett Rink from a poor and rebellious young kid to a middle-aged oil tycoon.Rock Hudson's portrayal of a rich Texas patriarch is quite realistic, despite the overly romantic roles he usually played.Elizabeth Taylor, too, is convincing as a young woman from a family of privilege in Maryland adjusting to life in the modern west without sacrificing any of the values she had acquired while growing up.Everyone in this film does not appear to be "acting." They all seem true-to-life, making this film a joy to see many times without tiring of the lessons about bigotry.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Stevens' Oscar winner
It's very easy to forget that this wonderful, entertaining, and nostalgic epic film won George Stevens an Oscar. As the special features included in the set indicate, Stevens was a very special director who enjoyed a long, productive, and rewarding career.Prior to World War II, Stevens directed mostly comedies and did quite well, particularly when he worked with Hepburn and Tracy on "Woman of the Year."Wartime service, where he produced a number of special films using Kodachrome film, changed Stevens greatly, especially when he saw the atrocities in the German concentration camps.

5-0 out of 5 stars houdini avec tony curtis
Superbe film avec cet acteur genial ,je l'est vue a la tl il y a une 15e d'anne en franais et j'aimerai telement l'acheter4-0 out of 5 stars George Pal's Magician Among the Spirits
This romanticized look at the career of Harry Houdini played with charm by Tony Curtis is full of the mysterious "other worldly " effects that George Pal made his reputation on in productions to come. In several scenes, Curtis taps into the Spirit world to...escape from a straight jacket, find the hole to get out of the frozen Detroit river, and seek out an experienced peer to solve the "Man in a Bottle" trick. He alsomanages in the process to stigmatize Halloween forever as a "bad omen" and gives new meaning to a Mother complex greater than Richard Burton's in "Alexander the Great". Still, the movie is a marvelous dose of "entertainment" and the sets are superb, there is a great veteran supporting cast and the screenplay is well written. This was a VERY popular movie and Tony Curtis does a great job in the role, even though there is a lot of deviation from the real Harry. It needs a DVD polish and presentation of extras with trailers and perhaps some interviews. It would be interesting to hear from Tony Curtis about this film after all these years. Good family fun!

2-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking???!!??
I like Flynn, Garson, and even Galsworthy as much as anyone, but what were they thinking when they put cast and wrote this movie?First of all we are to believe that Greer Garson is going to leave Errol Flynn for Robert Young? Who would prefer Marcus Welby to Captain Blood? We all know she is going to end up with Walter Pidgeon, anyway, but what woman in her right mind would choose Robert Young over Errol Flynn.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lavish MGM Period Drama With The Only Screen Teaming of Greer Garson And Errol Flynn
Almost everyone would be aware of the two equally famous television adaptations of John Galsworthy's respected literary work "The Forsyte Saga", however fewer people would know of this first much earlier film version released in 1949 that covered the period dealt with in Book One of Galsworthy's masterpiece. Despite MGM's increasing financial troubles as the 40's decade brought great changes to moviemaking in general here they really pulled out all their old magic to create a "typical prestige picture", the like of which would have warmed the heart of the studios by now long dead boy genius Irving Thalberg. The film boasts the only meeting on screen of legends Greer Garson, who was still the Queen of MGM despite some box office set backs, and o
