3-0 out of 5 stars OK
My daughter is 16 months old and loves Elmo.I purchased this DVD thinking she would love it but she doesn't love it, she likes it.She loses interest in it b/c the songs aren't familiar. All in all the DVD is OK.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST DVD for Toddlers by FAR!!
My 20 month old daughter absolutely LOVES this DVD. This is the ONLY DVD that she will watch for the entire length of it!I have even restarted it with her still in her "Elmo trance" and she still didn't budge! This has been her best Easter present! She has since received three Elmo's World DVDs that she likes, but they still do not compare to how much she LOVES this one. With the Elmo's World DVDs, she gets bored when they show Mr. Noodle and the other "real people" clips.Maybe those are more interesting for older kids, but for my daughter, she just isn't interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 little thumbs up!
A great addition to the Elmo collection. We liked this so much we bought the cd to listen to in her room for play time. Excellent video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very moving film
This movie is very inspiring."The Dawn Patrol," is very war related, as it takes place during the war and the patrol's of the flying aces dropping bombs and fighting the Germans.Errol Flynn is the very heroic flyer and loves his country and honors his duty in the service. It's really inspiring, especially his relationship between his good friend in the movie and in real life David Nivan they are true friends, their friendship is broken up for awhile by something Errol has to do it being his job and duty. It's a real moving film at the same time, inspiring, patriotic , truthful and sad.It shows what being in the air patrol during the war really was like a very true and relastic account of it. A very moving film.I think it was really well done, especially the flying scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grim WW1 based anti-war flick
Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone and David Niven star in the sobering 1938 film "The Dawn Patrol" which undoubtedly served as the model for the WW2 classic "Twelve O'Clock High".They are all members of the 59th fighter squadron of the Royal Flying Corps based in France in 1915.A somber Basil Rathbone playing Major Brand is the squadron leader.Day after day he depressingly orders his pilots on dangerous missions which create a high mortality rate.Ace pilot Capt. Courtney played by Flynn and his able wingman Lt. Scott played by Niven continously marshal replacement pilots with little combat experience into the skies to face almost certain death.Flynn despises Rathbone for the missions of death he orders them on.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Film Adaptation of the Classic Novel
This 1945 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novella is more that likely the best adaptation one will ever see. This may seem to be a big statement, but Albert Lewin's direction along with Harry Stradling Sr.'s Oscar winning Cinematography for 1946, appears almost flawless when comparing the classic novel with the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars "5" for the movie, "1" for no DVD
This is one the best films of all time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Lost Meaning of Evil and Terror.
With the exception of the fact that Sybil Vane is reduced from a stage actress to a club singer, this movie actually holds to the book quite well. In an age where horror movies revolve around the absurd overuse of blood and effects, and evil is portrayed as someone who just carries the label and dresses in black, this movie carries the true meaning of evil and terror. (Notably lost in modern times!) As in the book, we meet Lord Henry (played most convincingly by George Sanders). While he does have some redeeming points, he basically represents the devil. He is more of an observer, and he considers the common behavior of people beneath him. And as comically vicious as he gets, like the devil he never really tells outright falsehoods. One perfect example is when he expresses that women represent morality over mind and men represent mind over morals. Well, we then meet the young Dorian who is having his portrait painted. Lord Henry plays the devil and tells Dorian youth is only temporary and even if unintentionally tempts and leads Dorian into making a pact with evil. (He'll remain young while the picture ages.) Dorian then falls in love with Sybil Vane. And they plan to marry. But Lord Henry again plays the devil and gives Dorian advice that SOUNDS good, but will lead to Sybil's death when carried through. (Like the devil, Lord Henry can tempt, but NOT FORCE Dorian to do anything!) After Sybil's death, Lord Henry shows a redeeming moment when he is concerned over Dorian. But the harm is done. Dorian is now on his way to degeneration. It is not the pact itself that leads to Dorian's degeneration, but his vanity that leads him to a cold indifference to the needs of others. (While this behavior was comical in Lord Henry, it appears quite disturbing in Dorian.) Without blood or effects, this movie is really scarey as we gradually see Dorian degenerate into evil. Despite what action movies tell us, the true meaning of evil is when we become a prisoner of our own vanity and we desire to satisfy ourselves no matter what the cost to others. Dorian makes this clear when he says: "I enjoy scandals about others, but scandals about me do not interest me. I find them boring." In a moment of disturbing terror, Dorian murders the uncle of the Gladys (whom he now loves). And in his arguably most evil moment, he becomes the tempter. While he asks for Alan Campbell's help in disposing of the body, he tempts but again doesn't force. (And this will lead to Campbell's suicide. The tempted has become the tempter!) But Sybil's brother is still out there and he wants revenge for the death of his sister. We heard of Adrian Singleton earlier when Basil expressed his fear over the degeneration of Dorian's friends, and we see him as a disturbing eccentric who interestingly carries reason. Jim's death is creepily ambiguous. Did Dorian set up the hunting party in hopes that Jim would walk into a bullet, or did Jim's desire for revenge lead to his downfall? We don't know, but we DO know that for this evil to have fallen on Jim, Jim had to consent at least in part to it when he persued the evils of revenge. (Something the utterly stupid 'Time to Kill' couldn't figure out.) Moving on, Dorian has defeated all his enemies, but he just can't live with himself anymore. (An ending above and beyond action movies that have a hero kill his enemies, fall in love, and live happily ever after!) Well, Dorian breaks his pact with evil and pays a HIGH price. Not only is this movie a phenomenal remake of the book itself, but it also reminds us of the REAL meaning of evil and terror. And as a bonus, it shows the shortcomings of modern movies that just don't get it. If you liked the book, you'll love the movie! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate this movie 10 stars!
Naughty Marietta, winning the Oscar for Best Sound Recording in 1935, is the crown jewel of the Eddy/MacDonald films, holding a special place in anyone's heart that has ever had the pleasure of seeing it. It is esteemed as one of the best-loved operettas of all time, and that's saying a lot about this film. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Movie!
This was my first 'old' movie and I thought that it was certianly one of the best ones I have seen. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy make the perfect team in this film as they combine their superb talent of singing and comedy. The music in 'Naughty Marietta' is beautiful. Also, the plot is interesting and even a little bit funny.I would definatley reccomend this to anyone, either young or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect
One of the two greatest "operetta" films (MAYTIME being THE greatest) ever made.Jeanette - and the entire production - is radiant and, of course, the singing is both fun and magnificent at the same time, culminating in that most glorious moment at the Governor's ball.Simply perfect. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somehow, I can never resist watching a broadcast of this one
I shall confess that this film is a 'guilty pleasure' for me as well. The story is unrealistic and melodramatic. Lana Turner's outdated, 'plastic' leading lady ways show that her acting abilities are on the lowest level of anyone except the 'cute and perky' Sandra Dee. Dialogue is dreadful, from the photographer's saying he'll have a 'love affair with Lora's bones' to Lora's telling Annie, whom she had known and shared a residence with for over a decade, that she never thought she had any friends.

This movie is a classic.Although, I can barely stand to watch it.It takes me on an emotional rollercoaster ride.I bought it for my mother on Mother's Day.Growing up, she and I would watch it everytime it came on television.I wanted her to be able to see this tear-evoking memorable movie any time she pleases.Great Mother's Day gift.

All the reviews here, correctly, state what a terrific movie this is. But for me...just having turned 60...I confirm the absolute veracity of an early line of the movie, a voice-over by the great William Powell: "Ah, fifty. The old age of youth, and the youth of old age.."That, my friends, is the truth. Now, however, I am one lucky boomer to be able to confirm also that "sixty is the new forty." So, there it is. Editorial Review

This quintessential Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musical has all the kinetic energy and beaming goofiness that made their films together (nine in all) so popular--and so easy to lampoon. The son of a vaudeville performer (Charles Winninger), Rooney decides to put on his own show (in a barn!) to save his family's fortune, his town, his peers, and, gosh darn it, even the American way of life. The star luster generated by Garland matches the explosive energy of Rooney's performance. Director Busby Berkeley's big production numbers are a sight to behold, from a march through town for the title number to an embarrassingly dated minstrel show routine. The movie was made the same year as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes in Arms
Great old movie, good watching for the times we live in. A lot of good music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mickey and Judy!
This classic film stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland as teenagers living in Seaport, Long Island, NY just before the Great Depression struck. Vaudeville is dying; thus Rooney's family business as show biz perfomers is very much at stake. When the older folks leave Seaport to put on a show and prove to the world that Vaudeville is not dead yet; they leave the younger folks behind. What to do? Put on a show! Rooney's character trys to woo some fading child star so she can put up the money for the show and bumps Garland from the lead. She inevitably retakes the lead in the show and everything ends happily ever after when out of nowhere some hot-shot producer likes what he saw in the barn show scene. (By the way, one cautionary note: the barn show scene includes a minstrel show; although typical of that era it is not only dated but potentially ofensive to some viewers.) The viewer also gets an extra treat: Margaret Hamilton has a small role as the nasty old lady who runs welfare in the town and wants to send the kids off to a vocational school. All in all, this really is a very goood movie and great fun to watch. I would add that this is an obvious must-have for any Garland or Rooney fan. A BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Essential for Rooney-Garland Fans
In the 1939 Mickey Rooney was among the top box office draws in the world.Judy Garland had appeared as a supporting player in two Rooney films, and the two had significant chemistry--more over, Garland had just completed photography for THE WIZARD OF OZ--a film that MGM rightly expected would launch her to international stardom. The time was right to costar the two, and MGM did it with BABES IN ARMS.Read more

Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars too expensive
yes, waaaay too expensive
4-0 out of 5 stars "She Came Home and Vibrated for an Hour!"
The above is the only risque line you will hear in this classic family comedy starring the one and only Don Knotts.I just watched this movie for the first time in over 30 years and this movie brought back so many memories. If you were born between 1955 and 1965, this film was probably a big part of your childhood.I was a little too young to see it when it released to theaters, but it played on local television at least once a year in the late 1960's andearly 1970's. It doesn't have much of a reputation in "film" circles but for kids of that era it's one of the period's essential films.
5-0 out of 5 stars KNOTT'S BEST FILM!
The Ghost & Mr. Chicken has always been my favorite Don Knotts movie and probably my favorite role of the recently passed comedian. The film was made in 1966, just one year after he had left the Andy Griffith Show. The film not only works as a wonderful comedy but also an effective horror. This used to scare the heck out of me when I watched it as a kid.Knotts plays his usual, nervous twitchy self, this time as Luther Heggs a copywriter for a small-town newspaper who dreams of becoming a reporter. He gets his chance by getting to spend the night in the old, reputedly haunted, Simmons house where Mrs. Simmons was murdered and Mr. Simmons committed suicide 20 years earlier. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Sullivan's Oscar Moment
I don't know why Ed Sullivan didn't get more movie roles after his performance in The Singing Nun.Astonishing, simply astonishing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, fine cast.
Based on a true story, The Singing Nun tells of a nun, Debbie Reynolds, who walks a fine line between joyous praise through music and vain self-glorification as her popular songs become commercially successful. The story's pretty simple as she rises to fame, with a profound twist that gives her a wake-up call. There's a terrific supporting cast, but the main appeal is the music, my favorite being the song "Dominique," which she performs on the Ed Sullivan show (apparently based on a true-life event, with Ed Sullivan appearing in the movie to recreate it).Fortunately this melody is used extensively in the films score making for very pleasant viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Movie....
This movie is sweet and fun. That's all. It's not complicated, it's not a biography. It's a fictionalized account of a "Singing Nun". Debbie Reynolds has a beautiful voice.I loved this moviewhen I was little and still enjoy it! ... Read more

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a charming and playful Halloween story that adults and kids will love. Bing Crosby's smooth tones are the perfect accompaniment for this old-fashionied cartoon - perfect for snuggling under the covers on a dark, rainy night! 4-0 out of 5 stars Peter Lorre is indeed one of a kind!!
A superb and atmospheric early horror film with fine acting, super effects, tight script and haunting soundtrack. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the fantastic horror score by the great Max Steiner.Lorre is in top form and the severed hand effects(in most cases)easily stand up against 1991's Addams Family 'Thing' effects.
3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of silly, but entertaining
If not for Peter Lorre, this movie might be too silly to sit through. But Lorre turns in a grand performance, along with G. Carroll Nash as the detective.3-0 out of 5 stars Give Peter Lorre A Hand!!
This is a well-titled, but bizarre horror film from Warner Bros, a studio not known for producing horror films.Victor Francen stars as a renowned pianist living in one of those dark creepy movie mansions/castles.One hand is useless, so he uses his other hand to play.He relies heavily on his nurse, Andrea King, shuns his secretary, Peter Lorre, and sometimes seeks the company of Robert Alda who helped adapt the music for one-handed playing. When Francen dies (violently) and leaves his estate to his nurse, this sets off a series of strange events as everyone is terrorized by his disembodied hand!!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Werewolf Classic!
I can't praise this movie highly enough, it is not only the best of the universal monsters series and one of the greatest werewolf films ever made certainly the definitive treatment, but also one of my all time favourite movies. Lon Chaney turns in an outstanding credible performance worthy of his father the legendary man of a thousand faces, actually the entire cast is outstanding, Claude Rains, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Werewolf Movies!
Okay, so Universal Studios' 1941 classic, "The Wolf Man," wasn't the first werewolf film ever made. It is still, by far, the most widely known and loved. I mean, what werewolf is more iconic than the one Lon Chaney Jr. made famous?
5-0 out of 5 stars "The Way You Walked Was Thorny Through No Fault Of Your Own"
"Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers at night can become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is full and bright." Curt Siodmak penned that poem over 60 years ago as the centerpiece for a film that was to feature Boris Karloff. The film was to be called "Destiny" and provide Karloff with a less lumbering creature than his Frankenstein's monster. The project was put on hold and would eventually re-emerge as "The Wolf Man", this time starring the son of the man of a thousand faces, Lon Chaney, Jr. Chaney would later in life claim this as his favorite role because unlike the Monster or the Mummy it was "completely my own".

Other reviewers have given plenty of information regarding the general shape of this film--stars, cast, vignettes.A wonderful collaboration of ten different writers who together with a cast of stars, character actors, the Hall Johnson Choir (one of the gems of the Harlem Renaissance), and probably every extra then available in Southern California trace the path of a tailcoat cursed by it's tailor. This film was released in September 1942, the same month the German 6th Army began it's advance on Stalingrad; it was, and should be, considered light entertainment. Not Frank Capra-ish, each vignette weaves into the next with the final feeling of the film leading the viewer tobelieve that people, good and bad, somehow get what they deserve.A gentle gem with a particularly wonderful performance by Edward G. Robinson.Watch it with an open mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of 20th Century Fox stars
"Tales of Manhattan" was an essentially pointless series of vignettes starring a plethora of stars under contract to 20th Century Fox studios. The pretext for the story surrounded a finely tailored formal tailcoat which was purported to be cursed. The tailcoat represented a talisman of both good and evil as it was passed from character to character.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
My Fair Lady is wonderful. (A bit chauvanistic for our time though). Eliza is a spitfire. The music is wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good Account
The film is adaptation of the C.S. Foresters first novel in the Hornblower series "The Happy Return", in the USA this was titled "Beat To Quarters" with a little added plot from a "Ship of The Line" (not three novels as other reviewers have stated). The Happy Return was originally written as a stand alone book and C.S. forester conceived the idea whilst on a voyage home after a stint writing a film scripts in Hollywood. Although a very British subject Gregory Peck portrays the part of the stiff Hornblower very well. Forester himself wrote he was very happy with the results and in many ways this version is closer to the original idea than the later TV versions. Gregory Peck plays the man alone in charge of vessels a long way from home. Forester conceived the story not so much a story of ships, heroes and battles but of class barriers and the loneliness of command. The story is about throwing together of Hornblower a Captain of middle class background and Lady Barbara, sister of Duke of Wellington, well played by Virginia Mayo, I regret however that her accent does not bear up to scrutiny very well.He is already married so is not free and in any event he is too low a social class to jump the great social divide. In he close fines of a small vessel a long way form home passions and temptations are strong. The story does depart from the original novel in one important aspect by making Lady Barbara ill on the voyage home so Captain Hornblower can care for sick lady in the already confined circumstance. Apart from that I have very little to argue with. Forester went on to write ten Hornblower novels with this film sitting in the middle of the completed sequence. If you fond of the character then this is very good starting point and to my mind gets to the heart of what the writer originally conceived. I only hope that a good DVD version is put out soon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peck is Perfect...
Peck is the perfect Hornblower, when you read the books this is who you will see after watching this wonderful film,(I have seen it on TCM).C.S. Forester, the author of the books wrote the screenplay and it shows, very true to the character and he did a wonderful job in working in the best from the first three books, which I feel are the best ones he wrote.(If you have a teenage son, do him a favor and buy him the complete set, they are much better than anything on TV and are great reads for adults also.)The current TV movies on HH should do the same and put some teeth into the writing and stick closer to the books. This film should really be put on dvd and they should add a lot of extras concerning the author, how popular the books were around the world and also include a doc. about the time period of "iron men and wooden ships"...
