5-0 out of 5 stars just FINE!
Reviewer Hadrian12's spotlight review says perfectly everything to say about this film. Thanks for that.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Caped Prima Donna, but he Loved Music, and it Shows!
Using interviews with his son and daughters, his brother, the writers, choreographers, and conductors he worked with, and many of his friends, and clips of his rehearsals and performances, we see the life of a very talented, but troubled genius.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute BERNSTEIN!
It has been said many times that music is the universal language. While the truth of this statement is self-evident, occasionally even universal languages require translators. For that, great men such as Leonard Bernstein have stepped to the fore to assist the rest of us in understanding what is perhaps man's single greatest art form.

1-0 out of 5 stars I believe that the film is great but the vhs is terrible.
I ordered this film vhs hoping to enjoy it. I am very dissapointed as the film must be ruined. It made all sorts of noises that you could not either hear the arias or dialogue. I'm sorry that I received a damaged film.

3-0 out of 5 stars Schmaltz Fest
Unfortunately, this 30's schmaltz-fest seems pretty dated by now.I guess the Depression-era audiences needed some fluff4-0 out of 5 stars A FANTASIA ON STRAUSS.
The highly fictionalized fantasia on the life of the great Johann Strauss. This 1938 film is a sacher torte of pleasure for anyone who loves his music and, in the lead, Fernand Gravet does a commendable job acting-wise. The very attractive - albeit large-boned - Polish soprano Miliza Korjus sings with a truly brilliant voice & she became the object of intense jealousy from M-G-M's reigning diva, Jeanette MacDonald! Because it was decided that there wasn't room for two Prima Donnas at the studio, the firmly established MacDonald was kept on the payroll while the European Korjus virtually went into American obscurity. Backgrounds for the film were shot in Chino, California. It is rumoured that portions of this underrated gem was indeed directed by Josef Von Sternberg.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood operetta at its best
Take the story of a man torn between two women, add the music of Johann Strauss and the scenery of 1840's Vienna and you have The Great Waltz, an irresistible cream puff of a movie.Miliza Korjus-rhymes with gorgeous and she is-portrays the fictional opera singer Carla Doner in a delicious performance that verges on May West camp, murmuring most of her lines through a perpetual full-toothed grin and waltzing herself giddy while singing absolutely impossible sounding obliggatoes to Strauss's walzes-never loosing a beat and never out of breath!Luise Rainer's innate sweetness and vulnerability are perfect for Poldi, Strauss's devoted wife.Watch her silent reaction when she realizes that the song she thought he wrote for her was actually intended for Madame Doner-incredible acting. On the other hand, Fernand Gravet, as Strauss, is unexceptional and a bit bland.Among the excellent supporting cast, Hugh Herbert as the befuddled music publisher and Curt Bois as the comic, but wise violinist are outstanding. The movie does require a temporary suspension of belief. It is full of improbabilities, including the all-female orchestra that performs Tales of the Vienna Woods in a biergarten--wearing evening gowns, Madam Doner's apparent ability to glance at a piece of music once and perform it word and note perfect (the citizens of Vienna take this one step further by singing along even though the waltzes in question have yet to be published!), and the most peculiar version of Die Fledermaus ever performed. If you are looking for historical accuracy or musical purity, this is not your movie, but if you want a delightful Hollywood operetta, you can't do much better than The Great Waltz. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald
5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... Editorial Review

Victor Borge was a master at combining two seemingly disparate elements: comedy and classical music. While the Dane's dapper dignity fit the image of "longhair" music, Borge undercut it with broad physical comedy, clever spoofs, and off-the-cuff wit. A pioneer in the field of live comedy recordings, Borge is nevertheless best appreciated on video, and Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great routines, but truncated recording disappointing
Victor Borge is as funny as ever in this 90-minute live performance. He is thoroughly engaged, very lively, and manages to deliver even his most common routines with such energy and humor that you feel as if you're seeing them for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Humor At It's Very Best
Always wanted to see Victor Borge perform in person but never had the chance. His timing and ability to communicate with the audience is remarkable. The real musical talent of Mr. Borge on the piano is woven into his performance for all to enjoy. He simply was one of the very best entertainers of his time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suberb production poor transfer to tape
This production features the talents of some superb singers who can act well. The outdoor scenes were filmed in the Middle East and are very authentic. The indoor scenes look like a poor persons house. The kings are very resplendent and resemble a renaissance painting. The singing is excellent.Teresa Stratis shows emotion both vocally and visually.
3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT opera, so-so production
As a lifelong fan of Amahl and Menotti alike, I wish I could say that this is the greatest opera video on earth.Sadly, there are sound and visual quality issues that make this production a disappointment, despite the appearance of the lovely Teresa Stratas.
2-0 out of 5 stars Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors
I purchsed this video a few years ago and was also very disappointed. I have nothing more to add to the other reviews posted here; just to agree that the sound was poor and the viewing quite fuzzy. I remember watching not only the first broadcast on NBC but several broadcasts years after that, with different casts. It was and still is my favorite Christmas story. I will certainly purchase the Schippers CD and hope to see another video or DVD in the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best representation of Bizet's
opera ever! It's very raw and authenic interpretation of both Merimee's and Bizet's story.Filmed in Spain back in 1984, the movie holds a special place in my imagination. Real places such as the cigarette factory, the bullring in Ronda where Escamillo received accolades for his bullfighting prowess. What I really liked about the movie are the performances by Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes. They brought Jose and Carmen to life with their dialogue and acting.
5-0 out of 5 stars A moving Carmen - the movie of the opera
You cannot close your eyes, the film adds something so special to the music even if Migenes is not the best voice Carmen ever had ... More beautiful than any other Carmen movie (let alone the opera on stage) because it was shot in Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars innovative introduction to opera
I bought this years ago for nieces and nephews who loved it. Rebought it recently when my grandson was 9 months old. Now, at 15 months, when he stays with us, it's the on;y thing he wants to see(over and over). He now hums and dances to the music and jabbers at the screen. I wish there was a sequel! This is such an incredible, painless and pleasurable way to introduce children(and adults) to the incredible world of opers

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing I didn't like about it was. . .
that there wasn't more of it.Someone should do a sequel; there are so many wonderful arias and choruses that could be treated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Continuing source of great pleasure
We received this as a gift years ago and we've played it innumerable times to the delight of our now 8 year old granddaughter who has viewed it since she was 2. It is so creative, perhaps the most imaginative approach to opera for persons of all ages. There are some scenes of violent acts (murder and suicide)which are managed in a reasonably sensitive way. Even so, children over the age of 5-6 will recognize what has occured. ... Read more

Am a recent startup fan with Rieu and have enjoyed two other concert CD's.The only disappointment I have with this VHS tape is that it appears to have not recorded the entire concert.Otherwise it is as good as you can get with VHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars lighthearted and lovely
After a few minutes of introductory rehearsal footage and backstage warm-ups, this concert from Holland goes into full swing with one of the many Johann Strauss waltzes to grace "a whole evening of Viennese music". 5-0 out of 5 stars the most joyous music
I have always adored Strauss waltzes. This video has some songs in it that I had never heard before. They are all absolutely wonderful; a very happy, joyous musical treat. I saw Andre and the JSO in concert last month. The music was the most beautiful I have ever heard! 1-0 out of 5 stars Not short enough
Based on my back-of-the-envelope calculations, this has 37 more short films about Glenn Gould than I'm willing to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars The film won awards because it should've.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
"Gould's passion and charisma cross all boundaries plus reach out and grab one by the throat."That quote by a reviewer sums up the sublime emotion portrayed in this film. You can see the young Gould growing up and his passion for his music increasing exponentially throughout his relatively short life. The movie, disjointed, fragmented and disorganized like the genius Gould, is a wonderful artistic statement of the man and his marvelous gifts to all of us.I listen to his recording of "The French Suites" with awe and profound appreciation...and think what it may have been like to be this man, trying to live such an ideal life in such an imperfect and messy world.

As a former professional massage therapist, this is the tape I use every day whether I also workout or not.Much the same way I take a multi-vitamin every day to make sure my body's minimum daily needs are met, this is the minimum amount of movement everyone should get each day. It's not hard, doesn't take long, and will make you feel gently better. It's great by itself on a rest-day, or for an extended cool-down from aerobic or anaerobic exercise.(Also, since there is no talking (just music), you may turn the sound all the way off if you want to do it while someone is asleep in the next room.)

Editorial Review

This extraordinarily powerful 1983 production may be the best-sungperformance by Luciano Pavarotti on DVD, but when acting values are counted in,Ingvar Wixell manages to outshine the tenor star. Verdi gave the Duke two ofItalian opera's most brilliant arias ("Questa o quella" and "La donna emobile"), but he gave the deformed jester Rigoletto a depth and complexity of character that is reflected in music of great variety and enormous emotional impact: the cruel mockery of the opening scene, the self-doubts inspired by hisdialogue with Sparafucile, the paternal anxieties and final despair at hisdaughter's sad fate, and the burning, self-destructive thirst for revenge. Allthese motives work their way into music of great dramatic richness, variety, andintensity. Wixell rises to its challenges, not only in the title role but in acameo appearance as Rigoletto's nemesis Monterone. Location filming provides anatmosphere unavailable in staged productions. 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic version of Verdi's opera
Even a person who does not like opera will enjoy this movie version of Rigoletto. The principals are outstanding and Ponnelle's production is perfectly executed. A winner on all counts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Version
Every Pavarotti fan should own this marvelous film version of one of Verdi's greatest operas. In addition to the strong characterization, this opera provides several outstanding arias for each of the three leading characters, as well as touching duets, and one of opera's most famous quartets. Pavarotti's youthful voice sparkles with vitality, and his acting is more than satisfactory for the libertine Duke. This is a chance to enjoy the greatest tenor voice of our generation in its prime. (Yes, Domingo has greater versatility, especially in terms of roles and languages, but it's Pavarotti's golden voice that will mark him as one of greatest tenors of all time.) In this recording, his vocal trademarks are on display, including his sweet and bright tonal quality, lyric and classic legato, pure and smooth delivery, and wonderful upper extension. Edita Gruberova, the Czechoslovakian lyric soprano, gives a touching portrayal as the innocent Gilda. In the very difficult aria, "Caro nome," her coloratura trills express Gilda's ecstasy, her soft diminuendo suggests devotion, and her closing cadenza expresses her pure and radiant beauty. And she does it all while looking very relaxed. Ingvar Wixell, the Swedish baritone, sings with great strength and conviction, and his acting is outstanding. In this production, Gilda looks like she could actually be Rigoletto's daughter because they both have rather round faces. There are baritones that sing with greater warmth and sensitivity, but there are few baritones who could provide a more convincing acting performance. (If you want to hear a very warm and touching portrayal of an anxious father and devoted daughter, try the recently reissued 1950 CD recording with Leonard Warren and Erna Berger.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Povero Rigoletto, lucky us
Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's movie of Rigoletto was my first exposure to this wonderful opera...watching it again, years later, from the perspective of a seasoned Rigoletto(and Verdi) enthusiast, it still has the power to enchant, to revolt, to surprise, to overpower, to inform and to provoke thought on the strength of its dark interpretation, its psychological approach.

Editorial Review

Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the sleeper success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's album compilations and underscores his unique crossover appeal. In the U.S., Bocelli's critical response has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bulletproof superstar is better understood in the context of Europe's more established tradition of pop-classical fusions.Ironically, fans abroad are less prickly than stateside arbiters about the need for a discreet wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch, which Bocelli cheerfully ignores with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop, and traditional Italian songs.Read more

Andrea is a gift to the those of us who dare to dream and be happy when listening to the beautiful melodies he interprets in such a fantastic way, and regardless of the language!
5-0 out of 5 stars the best of bocelli's CD
Personally I like opera in general, but I also like this DVD. So first, to somebody who always say sth like: "oh he sucks, his voice is not even close to operatic, those who like him must have ear problem, come on...compare with real tenors like pavarotti this guy is only like a college level vocalist, since I am a vocal student myself I know there are so many vocalists who sings better him."
5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Romaza Concert
The Itallian Singing Sensation Andrea Bocelli returns to his hometown Pisa to Perform Popular Arias and songs from his albums Il Mare Calmo Della Sera and Romanza. This Concert was shown on PBS on a series called In The Spotlight. He performs with an Italian Orchestra conducted by Marcello Rota who conducted his Europe Sentimento Concert and has 3 Special Guests. The Best Part of this Concert is the Duet he sang withThe Phantom of the Opera Broadway and London Sarah Brightman which is Time to Say Goodbye. If you get this Concert on DVD you'll love this beautiful Duet. Also this Duet is on Sarah Brightman live at the Royal Albert Hall and Mr. Bocelli himself is on that DVD as a Special Guest. Also the Duet is in Andrea's Statue of Liberty Concert. So enjoy this Wonderful night of Romance in Tuscany with Andrea Bocelli. ... Read more

The little girl is idealistic to the point of being a pain in the behind. This kid sooooo lives in Fantasy Land!In her lollipop world, nobody does anything unpleasant, soldiers always come home, married people always adore each other . . . the little snip even presumes to wonder (out loud, to boot) if various couples she encounters on the street are married to each other. She's really annoying, and too full of her own sense of self worth.Excuse me for sounding prissy and old-fashioned, but you simply don't poke your head into an adult's private piano chamber, you don't interrogate your piano teacher about a personal project he's working on, if he's gracious enough to answer your barrage of questions then at least you don't interrupt him every 12 seconds, etc.You can't joke with her, you can't tell her the truth, you can't tell her a lie, she takes things too doggone seriously. She nags her mother endlessly about her father:Will father this, did father that, what would you do if father this or that, but what would you do, but mother, tell me, what would you do, etc.No matter what answer she gets, it's never quite satisfactory for the little pest. This kid just LOVES to pass judgment, especially negative judgment, especially upon people she barely knows.I was livid during the scene in which she first pays a visit to her piano teacher; while walking down the corridor leading to his room, she sweeps her gloved finger over a table to inspect it for dust!In her make-believe world of Pollyanna sweetness, there is no dust, no evil, no betrayal, no daddies who don't come home from the war, no bad ladies . . . just little girls who pass judgment and ask rude invasive questions because they have no sense of propriety.Furthermore, the pig-filth population of Paris, represented by the extremely unattractive women with their unhealthy pallor and streaks of rust-colored paint on their faces, made me wonder how the devil France could ever have wrongfully accused the great, noble, patient and suffering Marie Antoinette of being immoral.Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. What an altogether ugly movie.Pathetic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Definetly not for children plus it stinks!
We generally love the composer series but this one reeks. It is silly and stupid and teaches you next to nothing about Bizet.
4-0 out of 5 stars a musical fantasy
The series of films titled "The Composer's Specials", are in large part fiction, but are intended to introduce young people to classical music. In "Bizet's Dream", despite an inane script, and a few scenes that are so slow they seem to come to a standstill, there are some standout features: Marvelous cinematography by Barry Stone, on location in the Czech Republic, the magnificent music, played by the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and Yseult Lendvai. Ms. Lendvai is the Prima Ballerina of the Stuttgart Ballet, and her all too fleeting appearances are a joy. Had all 53 minutes of this film been of her dancing to Bizet's gorgeous Carmen score, this would have been a 5 star masterpiece, as it is, it narrowly fits into a 4 star category.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best thing you could ever see!!!
When I first saw this program, it was during a late-night fit of insomnia a year ago.I turned on the TV, flipped through a few channels, and stopped dead when I heard a tidbit of gorgeous, heartwrenching music playing to a program on PBS.It seemed to be a biography...on Gustav Mahler! Now, at the time, I was 18 years old and I had been a classical music fan for just a month or so.But I sat glued to this Mahler program.I learned all about the correlation between his sad, troubled life, and his stormy, tempestuous music.I couldn't have changed the channel if I tried. It was mesmerizing. At the end, when they announced that they would explore the life of Tchaikovsky the next week, I was thrilled.I made a mental note to catch the program, but they must have switched timeslots because I couldn't find the program the week after that.I was pretty let-down about that. But, to my immense joy and complete astonishment, I found the ENTIRE four-tape set at my local library!I took the set home and totally consumed it, hour after hour.It was the most fascinating thing I'd ever watched, and it inspired me beyond measure to soak up all the musical knowledge I could. What makes this set completely astounding is that it utilizes both the music of the composers, and the commentary of expert musicians/conductors/historians to actually put you in the composer's mind! The bits and pieces of music that they showcase are worth the entire price tag in and of themselves.Especially in the Bach program, where a young tenor delivers a STRIKING performance of "Erbarme Dich Mein Gott" from the St. Matthew Passion. It will literally bring tears to your eyes.I really hope that the BBC eventually brings this set to a DVD format.A treasure like this shouldn't be allowed to fade into dust.In closing I'd like to say, this set of tapes changed my life completely. If it can make an 18-year-old classical novice appreciate this music, imagine what it can do for you.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Production of The Best Composers of the Millenium
A very interesting and entertaining look into some of the greatest composers of our time.I just discovered the genius inherit in many of these men, and surprisingly through movies. The Arthurian movie Excalibur had a tremendous Wagner score, I believe the search for the Holy Grail piece, and this lead me to Bach--which lead me to this series through research.Of course I was already familiar with Beethoven and Mozart but more in depth information on their music and life was enjoyable.5-0 out of 5 stars Superb! The Best Video on Composers!
This has to be by far the best, most professionally produced video series on composers today.Kenneth Branaugh's voice-over is a delight and adds to the dramatic scope of the production.Kudos to the BBC!Read more
