From the moment the young Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is stolen from his life and ancestral home in 18th-century Africa and brought under inhumane conditions to be auctioned as a slave in America, a line is begun that leads from this most shameful chapter in U.S. history to the 20th-century author Alex Haley, a Kinte descendant. The late Haley's acclaimed book Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Picture Is Worth A Million Words!
Words alone cannot describe the effect this made for tv movie had on me when I watched the original showing on tv (1977).I was taken aback at how realistically they were allowed to portray this man's (Haley) story, which in effect was the story of the entire Black race and, to a large degree, the White race in this country! For Blacks it was like reliving their history. For Whites it was a serious enlightenment (and in some cases a rude awakening). It managed to open the door for dialogue between the races, and inspired a whole nation to get involved with genealogy too. Most importantly, it inspired most of this nation to say "never again."I have to agree with D. Hammork though in that I'm shocked and appalled at Amazon for leaving LeVar Burton and John Amos (who both played the MAIN character)off of their list of people who STARRED in this movie! This movie launched Burton's career; and John Amos had already been a star in his own right! Please get your act together!

5-0 out of 5 stars 45 Times and Counting
It is not a mistake: I have seen this movie so many times that I can only estimate the number of times I have seen it. One may ask if it has even started to lose some of its charm. Short answer: no. It is still a great and moving story now, even after 45-odd viewings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Moving performances
Neither Mr. Broderick nor Mr. Washington have been favorites of mine in the past but I must give them their due in their performances in Glory. Both gave stunning and moving performances. The visuals that made you feel like you were there were astounding as well.Mr. Broderick does a wonderful job of portraying a character who is sometimes self-righteous and self-seeking and at other times inspiring and self-abasing. Mr. Washington provides the angry man to bring out the more sedate and clear-thinking Morgan Freeman character. All come together in common bond that builds in fighting together for a common cause. It is a somewhat one-sided and shallow portrayal of the war's causes that may not go over well with the lovers of history. But, the coming-of-age band-of-brothers mood of the film is moving and enjoyable all the same. No matter which side you may favor in that conflict (if either), you will still find yourself cheering with the rest, "Give-em Hell 54th!"

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL MASTERPIECE
Flawless movie making at its best! Patriotic and powerful telling of the true beginning-of-the-end for the Confederacy. Ex-slaves and free blacks alike, finally aloud to defend their dignity, were the final blow to the Southern bondage of an entire race of human beings history tells us. The Truth based story of the Massachusetts 54th. Only the beginning of black heroics during the Civil War.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Just Aren't Enough!
There aren't many films from any era that come close to being "perfect" (though that's not really the right word) in just about every way--probably you could count them on your fingers and have some left over.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Way (we might like to wish)We Were
Friendly Persuasion (1956) is my favorite 1950s movie. It always reminds me of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) as both films have analogous existentialist values; questions of faith, meaning and test of personal resolve. Tevye the Milkman must face the challenge to his sense of self and traditional way of doing things, by the increasingly independent ways his three daughters go about selecting a husband. Jess Birdwell (Gary Cooper) and his family must face the challenge to their pacifist Quaker values by the personal demands of the American Civil War.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I Will Not Harm Thee"~Can Family, Faith And Passivism Endure In Time Of War?
`Friendly Persuasion released in '56 is a life affirming tale of faith, family and passivism against the heartbreaking backdrop of the bloody American Civil War. Directed by William Wyler the film focuses on a small Quaker community in the South, more specially on one particular family in that community, the Birdwell's.

Editorial Review

This sumptuous 1949 film adaptation of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel isn't as good as the 1933 Katharine Hepburn version, or even the 1994 remake starring an Oscar-nominated Winona Ryder, but it does offer its own pleasures, especially in seeing an all-star cast put through its paces. Erstwhile tomboy June Allyson stars as Alcott's famed heroine Jo, the budding writer in Civil War New England who pines for adventure, independence, and her own career. With Father off to war, it's up to Jo, practical older sister Meg (Janet Leigh), frail sister Beth (Margaret O'Brien), and vain sister Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) to help Marmee (a saintly Mary Astor) keep the home fires warm while dealing with the rigors of adolescence. It's all poured on with a generous amount of syrup, including lavish sets, hoop skirts, and petticoats, but anyone who's ever read Alcott's book will take comfort in its familiar story line. The dialogue is clunky but earnest, but you'd have to have a heart of stone not to get caught up in Jo's plight. And rarely do you get to see such stars go at it with such gusto: Allyson and Peter Lawford (as neighbor and rich boy Laurie) are a match made in B-movie heaven, Taylor is spunky and hilarious in an early comic performance, and Leigh does the matronly thing with aplomb. And nobody, but Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars noble try, but those mgm colors are too damn rich
june allyson tries so hard here to establish herself as a serious actress, but taking on a role where you are going to be compared to katharine hepburn is never wise. that being said, i found this mgm color gala to be not as bad as i had been led to believe, much as i found the 1933 cukor version to be not as good as it is supposed to be; i like both movies, but neither is a classic -- maybe its just the inherent thinness of the source.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Cast
Little Women is the story of four daughters and their mother (Mary Astor) during the Civil War. Their father is away at war and the family, although rich before, have fallen on hard times. However, their vitality and kindness bring them all they need. Meg (Janet Leigh) is the oldest and the quietest of all the girls. She finds love in a friend of her father's. Jo (June Allyson) is the second oldest and the star of the film. She's a real tomboy whose ambition in life is to be a writer though she loves the theater as well. Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) is beautiful and spoiled but well-meaning. Beth (Margaret O'Brien) is the youngest, a fragile, shy girl with a strong love for music. Laurie (Peter Lawford) is a rich boy nearby who befriends the girls and integrates himself into the family.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best versions
I own 3 movie versions of "Little Women", 1933, 1949, 1994.I know of at least 2 other versions. There was a British version, and also a "made for TV" mini series version with Susan Day, made in the late 70's or early 80's.I never saw the British version. From what I can remember I liked the Susan Day version. But I have a hard time with the good reviews I've seen on the Ryder version, you can't even tell it's the same story, and I think it is by far the worst.I'm not trashing Ryder, I just think it was poorly directed. But I love the June Allyson version. She, to me really depicts the "Tom Boy" spirit that Jo seems to have had, and O'Brian is great, You can't help but love her, and I also like this mother best of all the versions.Like several have said, I think the first version with Hepburn was the best overall, but I like a lot of the characters(actors) in this second one also.I like the fact that both this, and the first movie give a good idea of what was expected in etiquette of women during that cival war period.IfI have any criticism of this movie version, it is that it labors, or drags a little towards the end.But still I like Allyson's spirit, and the movie has continuity, which there is no such thing in the Ryder version. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Youthful dreams blaze and die....
Perhaps the sign of a classic film is if it means one thing to you when you are young but takes on a whole different meaning in later years. "Raintree County" is one such movie. I saw this movie as a young person and loved the romance, the clothes, the rivalries, all very torrid and exciting. Now I see the tragedy of a young man lose his dreams and his great love through one moment of misspent passion, a passion that would beget many sad repercussions for many people. Montgomery Clift captures the idealistic and brilliant John and his quest for redemption in the form of the elusive raintree. Elizabeth Taylor is great as his mad Southern belle seductress, struggling with demons brought on by slavery and family dysfunction. Eva Marie Saint is sweet and virginal as John's true and lost love, although you totally understand how he falls for Taylor. As usual, there is great chemistry between Taylor and Clift. The supporting actors are in top form. This is one film that is pretty faithful to the book, which was much more tragic. A great film, they don't make movies like this anymore.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Short Review of a Long Movie
MGM evidently envisioned this three-hour 1957 would-be Civil War epic as a next-generation Gone With the Wind, but its hopes were misplaced:it's a grave disappointment.Taylor hams it up as a tempestuous, manipulative, neurotic Southern belle (a kind of overwrought parody of Scarlett O'Hara).Clift is stuck in the thankless role of bland straight man to whom things happen---whom other characters play off of.Saint is the true-blue hometown gal who loves Clift, gets jilted, but perseveres to land her man in the end.Marvin is a hard-drinking, two-fisted hellraiser.British old pro Nigel Patrick steals his scenes as a flamboyant, lecherous schoolmaster and provides welcome diversion. But he can't save this silly, ponderous, badly dated melodrama:the sophomoric dialogue hamstrings the actors and falls flat (some of it is laughable); none of the characters or situations carries any real conviction; the lumbering film just can't get off the ground. It has been aptly called "an elephantine bore," and does scant justice to Ross Lockridge's estimable 1948 historical novel on which it is based.(Lockridge committed suicide shortly after publishing this his only book; thus he was spared the indignity of witnessing the travesty Hollywood made of it.)

4-0 out of 5 stars In search of the bliss!

Editorial Review

Here's the alpha point of Elvis Presley's film career, the introduction of the raw-boned Mississippi boy into Hollywood pictures. E.P. takes a supporting role, and his entrance is delayed for nearly 20 minutes: kid brother to returning Civil War soldier Richard Egan, his character marries Egan's sweetheart Debra Paget when Egan is presumed dead. It's a chance for Elvis, his face still trembling with baby fat, to emote dramatically and finish tragically, both of which he does passably well. A serviceable Western, the film shamelessly shoehorns four Presley tunes into two sequences: E.P. crooning on mama's porch, and performing at a country fair (where starchy locals don't seem disturbed at the boy's gyrating hips and happy feet). All in all, a shrewd way to put a foot in Hollywood's doorway, and, of course, one of the last Presley movies to feel like a real film and not a vehicle for the King. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Here'sa raw Presley appearing in his film debut
For anyone who enjoys Elvis Presley's earlier films, Love Me Tender is a must buy.Presley was not even the top star of this film, but by now, the other actors are long forgotten, and Elvis Presley is a household name. This post Civil war bittersweet romance does not offer an overwhelming plot, but I enjoyed the rough edges in the characterization of the caring, but short-tempered, young Texas farmer that Presley portrays, The film does not contain a host of Elvis' songs as do his later musicals, but his sensitive rendition of "Love Me Tender" is unforgettable. ... John Wayne, that pillar of machismo, was well aware that costar Rock Hudson was gay, yet he prized him as a boon companion, a fellow professional, and one hell of a bridge player. Each plays a Civil War commander who, after the ceasefire, leads a community of home folks into Mexico to make a fresh start. Hudson is a Southern gentleman; Wayne commanded the Yankee cavalry at Shiloh, where Hudson's brother died.Nevertheless, Rock, with his extended family, and Duke, with his troop of cowboys and 3,000 horses to sell to Emperor Maximilian, soon join forces to outgun banditos and beam paternally over the budding romance between their respective daughter and son (an adopted Indian played by footballer Roman Gabriel with Crystal Gayle hair).Lingering North-South animosities are celebrated in an obligatory communal fistfight in the Andrew V. McLaglen manner, and the showdown with both Maximilian's lancers and the rebel Juaristas is disconcertingly perfunctory.Read more

As an African American parent and teacher, this movie is a MUST for our children. Each generation is further removed from the real-life experiences of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the deceased generation of slavery. The word"nigger" is now used thoughtlessly as a joke. Our children don't realize the significance the word had and still has for some generations. Too many believe they can refuse or fight their way out of an unwanted situation. Theirs is a different reality. ROOTS can bring them in touch with the past of those who havedied in a struggle to maintain dignity for our people. This legacy is alive in the movie ROOTS. Share the legacy with our children---see the movie with a young person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mangled but not totally destroyed
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars We's all from Tennessee....
This movie is a real gem and John Huston does a remarkable job in creating a fairly realistic looking Civil War environment. You won't find any overweight re-enactors aiming their rifles at the sky and not showing any signs of fear. No this movie provides actors and men like Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin, who knew well what real war was all about. The battle scenes are quite good for the period in which they were filmed and certainly have a more realistic feel than some of the battle scenes depicted in more recent Civil War "epics".

3-0 out of 5 stars Josey wales
The movie I liked very much, one of the best he ever made.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Eastwoods Best Action Packed Westerns
At the time of its release, this was the best western that Eastwood had ever done with the exception of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". Eastwood skillfully plays a sympathetic character whose wife and child are killed during the Civil War near Kansas by the Union "Redlegs" who are virtually roguing military. Seeking revenge for his loss, he joins a Bloody Bill Anderson's guerrilla unit that strikes unmercifully against the union forces. As the war ends, the majority of the unit comes in to surrender except for Josey and they are slaughtered by the Redlegs who seek retaliation. And there is your story; Josey becomes the hunted as he and one escaping companion are hunted virtually to eternity. Eastwood plays the character perfectly as he carries multiple pistols and weapons as Confederate cavalry did to even fire power, even with loaded cylinders that he can interchange with his pistols. Comical at times, as Eastwood seems to pick up lost souls from Indian Dan George (Little Bigman), to an abused female Indian, a cranky granny and her attractive yet pensive daughter (Locke) and even a red boned cur dog who suffers the indignity of Josey's spiteful but accurate tobacco spit (but the dog follows anyways). George has several lines that work as commentary onthe plight of the 'Civilized Tribes' and the Cherokees choice of backing the south. He also invokes great humor with lines like, "I didn't surrender, but they took my horse. He surrendered". The movie is a thrill a minute as Josey frequently has to shoot his way out of traps, accidental discoveries, the rescue of one of his lost souls and the climatic ending where he finally finds a peaceful place until he is found again not only by his old enemies but the Indians in his adopted home. In each circumstance where he finds himself confronted with danger and as always outnumbered, he always seeks an edge to give him some advantage, and when he spits, there is going to be some shooting. And there is a sub-climatic moment where Josey meets with his Indian counterpoint, recognizing that they have recently lived parallel lives, each being hunted and perhaps abused, making a statement that each deserves a better life. Not as sensitive as his best film the "Unforgiven" or perhaps as realistic, but action packed and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Contrary, Great Eastwood
There is something about Clint Eastwood that allows him the luxury of delivering a cheesey macho line without looking like an ass. In a movie full of such lines, Eastwood really shines in this epic western. I have always wondered why the critics never gave this western its due, while normal every day joes continue to give it the thumbs up. I believe the answer lies in the sympathic portrayal of the Confederate outlaw who is Josey Wales. How dare anyone cast anything wearing a Confederate uniform in anything less than an evil light? Moreover, How dare anyone portray Union Soldiers as a bunch of marauding murderers who looted and pillaged their way through a defeated South? These are the type of thoughts likely dancing through the heads of liberal wine drinking cheese eating newspaper types while sitting down to disparage what is Eastwood's best movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Doubt It's Great
There is no questioning this film is done very well. That said, it should be pointed out that it may not be for everyone. If you are not a fan of cliches, stay away from this. There are TONS of monologues that go on for long periods of time with epic music in the background, and maybe not everyone can handle that. Most of the performances are incredible, my favorite happens to be Jeff Daniels. One performance that doesn't do it for me is Martin Sheen. He shares a lot of scenes with Tom Berenger and it seems like Berenger is the one keeping those scenes afloat. C. Thomas Howell has a steady part but you won't recognize him as the kid from the Outsiders. Great battle scenes, especially the big one in the open field at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars We do what we must do.
After the heart-rending nobility of Abraham Lincoln's verbal tribute to Gettysburg's fallen, there is not much else that could do those men justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Before I give my review I would like to say that everyone who says that Martin Sheen is a bad R.E Lee, or that the movie is inaccurate, or that the movie is too accurate and gives to many stupid details, or that the movie moves to slowly, is a dumb idiot who cares more about hollywood depictions of the Civil War than true depictions. The movie is positivly lovely to watch.

I'm not white nor black but this film has completely captivated me.A very inspiring film about slavery...I have not really understood the subject until I've viewed this film.Wish I could have rated this one morethan five stars though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roots: by Alex Haley
Although I struggle to journey back in time to find my family roots, I am always sidewined by unpublished or no documentation for exsistance of my family name. I am like a woman lost in the great melting pot of Americansociety with no real since of who I am or where I'm originated.Nevertheless, I had one aunt that lived till she was 114 years old. Shetold me our family name was Jefferson from Tennessee. My famly moved fromthis state to Texas with a white slave owning family. After my aunt died in1992 I could always remember her telling me to go down the road. It took meseven years before I went down the road and the day I did - I found theplantation where my family worked and sharecrop. The plantation is ahistorical site and the Jefferson name is mentioned in the plaque. However, they have no record of the slaves they brought in from Tennessee. Thegreat-great-grand daughter said she remembered my aunt the year I first setout down the road and inquired. The woman said my aunt use to be her mammy. The next year she could not remember if my family was slaves at her familyplantation. Again I say, unpublished or no documentation of my familyexsistence. I beleive America has melted the black society into a goop ofundocumented mess. If some are like me, I would like to know about myfamily history, heritage and how they obtain their freedom. CelebratingBlack history, the movie Roots, by Alex Haley have a deep meaning to me. Itry, and I try to understand why it had to happen. Slavery put an emitybetween blacks and whites. No good became of it. Most people inherited thehate that rings on both sides. Is their a common ground to bring peacebetween us? I believe so. It starts with Roots. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This elephantine tale set on Easter Island gets points for trying to explain the reasons behind the gigantic structures found there, but it unfortunately surrounds itself with a preposterous love story. Director Kevin Reynolds (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Easter" Egg Race
This movie arouses violent controversy...you either like it or hate it.4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and cinematically rich
I don't think this is a historically accurate account of Easter Island, which has perplexed historians for a long time, but I still think it's worth seeing as a thought exercise. The Moai raise lots of questions and this film gives a possible explanation.5-0 out of 5 stars Easter Island
I spent a year on Easter Island (Rapa Nui)in service to the United States. The people were very friendly and willing to talk about their island. The movie was relatively accurate concerning their past, including the cannibalism. If you lived on an island that is roughly 9 by 16 miles and that island had been deciminated by ecological ignorance, cannibalism might seem like a good idea at some point. It was not a continuing thing. The movie was Hollywoodized for entertainment purposes but was well done and the scenery was very familiar. There were two distinct races and they were the long ears and the short ears.Generally archeologist feel that one race was Polynesian and the other was South American indian. The long ears were generally exterminated in the civil war.Places were accurately named. The statues were carved on the sides of Rana Raraku(S?) and the bird men spent much of their time on the larger volcano called Rana Kao(S?) Once a year the stalwarts of the island did race to "Bird Man's Island" to bring back an egg. I believe it was for the glory and special treatment the winner recieved for the following year.I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.-----PJ ... Read more
