3-0 out of 5 stars Barnabas Collins Has Risen

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
I used to watch the soap opera, then I saw this film.I loved them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darker than "Dark"
"House of Dark Shadows" is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and I've always been a fan of the TV series. The movie, though, is fairly gory and much darker than the series had ever been. It was made 35 years ago, but it still scares me when I watch it!Some of the best scenes include Willie Loomis releasing Barnabas from his coffin, and the film's climax involving Barnabas, Maggie Evans, Jeff Clark and Willie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Interpretation of Irving's Tale
Ahh - the perfect Halloween film!Better than many of the old classics. This is Tim Burton at his best.As a child, I loved the gothic tale of the Headless Horseman - and this rendition never fails to ring the bell.Johnny Depp is well cast as the somewhat nervous, eccentric, but always ernest Ichabod Crane.Christina Ricci is beautiful and Christopher Walken is perfect as the Horseman. While the film is gory - after all there are lots of heads being lopped off - it's not really scary.I wouldn't recommend it for children under the age of 12 however - especially those with overactive imaginations. The old animated Disney version is better suited for the little ones.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining... a real Halloween delight !
"Sleepy Hollow" Has just the right amount of everything to make it quite a memorable movie. The atmosphere that Sleepy Hollow portrays makes this movie
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spooky Flick for the Fall Season!
Let me state right off that, although I respect Burton as a great filmmaker, I'm not a fan of his films; they usually strike me as eminent examples of style over substance (which, in a sense, isn't his fault since he's not usually the writer). Plus the films he usually picks to direct simply aren't my cup of java (for instance, I have no plans to catch "Edward Scissorhands" anytime soon). But who can deny his great visual talants? This guy knows how to make a film LOOK good, that's for sure.

"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" 5-0 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Is Alive!
Caveat: This is the TCM 75th anniversary edition of one film -- Frankenstein. This is NOT the legacy box set! That said -- this is a spectacular presentation of James Whale's Frankenstein remastered, fully restored and with a stereo soundtrack. And yes -- the scene where the monster drowns the little girl is back. Also back is the line where Dr. Frankenstein proclaims, "Now I know what it feels like to be God." Karloff is stunning. Colin Clive is edgy and frighteningly intense. The accompanying documentaries and trailers are fascinating, particularly the almost 2-hour feature on disc two, "Universal Horror", a retrospective of the horror films released by Universal Studios. A must for any DVD library as this is one of the greatest horror films of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Universal Horror Masterpiece
After Bela Lugosi became a movie star playing Dracula, he was offered the role of the Frankenstein monster, but turned it down & so a other horror movie star emerged, Boris Karloff as the manufactured mistunderstood monster, truly one of the greatest horror films of all time, Karloff brings terrifying perfection to the role. A great non dialogue performance. A masterpiece of how science can be misused. If you like classic universal horror see Mary Shelley's shocking novel story in the motion picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Well, we've warned you!"
All movies are dated. Some are more dated than others, of course.A film's dated quality can be its strength as well as its weakness.Much film criticism has surrounded the primitive techniques used in 1931's "Dracula" and "Frankenstein".Lack of musical score, obvious use of studio sets, theatrical acting, pedestrian use of the camera, etc.Yet I would argue that these qualities are what make these films unique and give them a dream-like, nightmarish quality, which the later, slicker and more polished sequels lacked. The sound of the Frankenstein monster's footsteps coming down the hall before his entrance, the thumping of the dirt being thrown atop the coffin in the opening sequence, all would be lost had they been interpolated in a musical score. The same goes for "Dracula"'s scattering rats, bats and night creatures among the clacking bones in the coffins.Granted, the later "Bride of Frankenstein" brilliantly used music and a far more sophisticated film technique to unfold its story, yet it was a completely different piece of art.It was much more operatic and complex and full of irony and satire as well as horror.Whereas "Bride" gave us thrills, "Frankenstein" gave us chills.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you liked SCARY MOVIE ....
I saw this movie 20 years ago and thought it was hilarious. It drags in parts and gets a little wierd at the end but if you've watched the older horror classics, e.g. Halloween, Carrie, you'll appreciate the jokes and humor. This movie was the prequel to movies like Scream and Scary movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars over the top cheesy, bizarre
this one is actually a guilty pleasure of mine and certainly not for everyone. you really have to be into 80s horror comedy cheese to even slightly appreciate what this film offers. its kinda a horror spoof intended to scare children a bit while being a bizarre comedy for adults. you realize right from the beginning that this movie is not intended to rival The exorcist or win academy awards. just a fun movie for fans of 80s cheese. I find the fathers sarcastic wit and negligence hysterical. The scene at the end when van helsig goes against the vampires for the bookof evil is classic horror comedy. totally over the top, cheesy , and nonsensical all the through. The daughters bath scene is mandatory and she looks quite nice semi nude as well. Nice shots of her legs and cute feet hanging out of bath tub. good movie for hardcore cheese lovers only.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute!
Okay Saturday the 14th is not the funniest comedy movie ever made but I still liked it. It's just a cute enjoyable movie with some cute humor that satires horror movies and it has a good cast, Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss play a husband and wife and are married in real life and they were good in the movie as was Kari Michaelsen who is probaly best known as playing Katie, the eldest daughter in the sitcom Give Me A Break and underrated character actor Jeffrey Tambor was good too. 5-0 out of 5 stars Black humor abounds!
Based on Poe's classic, this is a most amusing film about two warring Sorcerers, Dr. Scarabus {Karloff} and Dr. Erasmuc Craven (Vincent Price) who eventually meet up and duel it out one stormy night using their various imaginative Magical talents to out-notch eachother.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I'm always fascinated by your utter lack of scruples."
Roger Corman directed many films based on works by Edgar Allan Poe. These films include: "Masque of the Red Death", "The Haunted Palace", "Tales of Terror", "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Conqueror Worm", "The Tomb of Ligeia", & "The Fall of the House of Usher." "The Raven" is based on a poem from Poe. As the film begins, sorcerer, Erasmus Craven (Vincent Price) is amusing himself with magic when he receives a strange visitor--a pesky raven. The raven, it turns out, is fellow magician, Dr. Bedlo (Peter Lorre). Bedlo has been stripped of his magical tools and turned into a raven by the evil Dr Scarabus (Boris Karloff). Craven turns Bedlo back into his human form and then learns that his wife--Lenore--who has supposedly been dead for two years--is alive and well and living with Dr Scarabus. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Horror Classic Fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars "I belong here."
Nell Lance is not well. She has spent most of her adult life caring for her invalid mother and she is having difficulty coping now that mother has passed on. She sees her big opportunity to live a little when she is invited to the Hill House for a brief stay. This is her time to socialize, to break out of her cocoon and to prove to everyone else that she belongs in their group. Seems she has somehow gotten the wrong idea. The well known Dr. Markway (Richard Johnson) sees the recently vacated Hill House as an opportunity to prove the existence of ghosts, ghouls and/or goblins. He has invited Theo (the beautiful Claire Bloom) for her psychic ability and the skeptical Luke (Russ Tamblyn) for use of his inherited house. Nell was asked to come because of her propensity for communicating with the dead, a claim she vehemently denies. What the group finds at Hill House is worth investigating for viewers. Julie Harris is terrific as the disturbed Nell and the others turn in good performances as well. I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a scary movie, but Robert Wise's direction makes this a fairly gripping movie. I am slightly surprised by its G rating, given the intense moments and a couple of swear words. This really should be PG. You can't really go wrong if you are looking for a good haunted house movie.

This old 1963 scarefest works for those of you (myself included) who are not into the screaming gorefest of so many others' preference and prefer a more sophisticated way to get a chill or two sliding up your spine.

Vincent Price brings a theatrical flourish to the role of Roderick Usher, a brooding nobleman haunted by the dry rot of madness in his family tree. This being Poe, there's a history of family madness and melancholia, a premature burial, and a sense of doom hanging over this gloomy, crumbling mansion. Roger Corman sold stingy AIP pictures on the concept by claiming "The house is the monster," or so goes the oft-told story. True or not, Corman (with the help of his brilliant art director Daniel Haller and legendary cinematographer Floyd Crosby) creates an exaggerated sense of isolation and claustrophobia with the sunless forest and funereal fog that holds the house and its inhabitants prisoner in a land of the dead. It doesn't quite look real (some of the effects are downright phony, notably the apocalyptic climax), and none of the costars can hold a candle to Price's elegant, haunted performance (often speaking in no more than a stage whisper), but it's a triumph of expressionism on a budget. Shot in rich, vivid color and CinemaScope, from a literate script by genre master Richard Matheson, this is stylish gothic horror in a melancholy key. It was such a success that Corman reunited his core group of collaborators for the follow-up Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A rather boring movie/adaptation despite Vincent Price's brilliance.
I simply thought that "The Fall of the House of Usher" was rather boring and I found myself dozing off.I thought that "The Pit and the Pendulum" was a much better flick and a much more interesting adaptation. In fact, I was quite disappointed with this adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's brilliant short story "Fall of the House of Usher".While the movie provides a grim atmosphere in accordance with the Poe's story, the movie drags and never really picks up enough steam to keep one's interest...however, I found the actual story written by Poe to be quite interesting and very entertaining...perhaps that is my problem with the movie as it is not nearly as good as the story itself. This movie "The Fall of the House of Usher" could have been much better.Notwithstanding the poor adaptation of Poe's classic story of despair, Vincent Price, as always, was terrific in his role...still, this is not enough to make this a good adaptation.I recommend watching the clearly superior "The Pit and the Pendulum" instead of this flick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Home Improvement...
Roderick Usher (Vincent Price) has a serious medical condition. He is stricken with a severe heightening of the senses which turns the slightest touch, sound, sight, taste, or smell into sheer agony. Roderick also believes that both he and his sister Madeline (Myrna Fahey) are doomed to impending insanity and death (it's a family curse). So, the Usher house is not a happy place! Enter Mark Damon as Madeline's fiance, bent on getting her out of this dreary atmosphere and you've got big trouble. Roderick insists on her staying put, to the point of burying her alive! Can her betrothed save her from this hideous fate? Well, not if old Rod can help it! Meanwhile, the very house itself is crumbling around them. THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is a solid Roger Corman / Poe movie with lots of ghastly charm. One of Vincent's best performances...

5-0 out of 5 stars Corman, Poe, Price and the American Drive In
After all the years that have passed since the Corman/Price "Poe" series first ran, it is hard to explain just how breathtaking these films were, especially in the heartland. When they were new, those of us in the large patch in the middle of America, and were raised on drive-in movies, saturday kiddie shows, and afternoon TV "matinees" were frankly surprised by how good these films really were. The Corman/Pricemovies provided a welcome switch from summer films with plots built around sex-crazed cheerleaders, pulchritudinous stewardesses, over-heated summer school teachers, and hormonally-crazed student nurses. This is an interesting observation in the face of the reality that Corman was also notorious for making movies about those self-same nymphomaniacal cheerleaders, stewardesses, summer school teachers, etc, etc, etc,

5-0 out of 5 stars Distinquished gothic thriller.
Those who tiresomely belabor the inadequacy of the snakes on the Gorgon's head at the film's conclusion entirely miss the point. It is not surprising in our cretinous era that some would lament the unavailability of computer generated special effects in 1964. That they persist in doing so, however, only serves to illustrate how very far these modernists are in both sensibility and aesthetic principles from the 19th century Gothic tradition that this film so faithfully seeks to reproduce. The point isn't the snakes but the psychological force behind the baleful facial expression!
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful Work From Hammer
"The Gorgon," to my mind, is one of the greatest Hammer films ever -- in fact, I'd say it's a great film of any kind, and through it, I can appreciate what makes Hammer horror films so enduringly popular.
4-0 out of 5 stars The House of Horror does it again
Hammer's 1964 The Gorgon is crying out for a DVD widescreen release on both sides of the Atlantic. This underrated film is a mesmerizing fantasy that brings together ancient mythology and Hammer's best gothic style under the expert direction of stalwart Terence Fisher.

3-0 out of 5 stars Video censored? What about the upcoming DVD?
There is a scene in the film where Tracy (played by Kate Jackson) and Quentin (played by David Selby) are lying in bed. The Quentin character has been taken over by Charles Collins. I remember when I first saw the movie that Charles Collins places his hand over Tracy's covered breast and rubs it quite harshly. I thought at the time this was pushing the envelope for a GP film. I guess I was right. This action is truncated from the video release. Now we simply have the line from Tracy "Quentin, don't touch me like that." Not only was NODS cut for initial theatrical release, it suffered yet another cut for video release. There is word that a double feature HODS/NODS release is in the works (see tvshowsondvd.com). Will we at least get the original theatrical version?

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back To Creepy Collinwood!
'Night of Dark Shadows' is the second of the two Dark Shadows motion pictures. At the time of it's release, this one didn't do quite as well as the first, but over the years, it has developed a strong cult following, and looks very good on repeated viewings.5-0 out of 5 stars angelique indeeds does come back to collinwood to claim what
in this 1971 sequel to "house of dark shadows'" night of dark shadows" is a creepy film about the ghost of angelique who comes back to claim charleswell actually quentin collins who is the reincarnation of charles collins who was a painter like quentin is in the present time. the reason i gave "night " a 5 stars even though there was a lot of the film butchered out by a creep from mgm studio how dare he do that to grayson hall. but grayson was great in it and the 3 cast that was most memorable were kate jackson, david selby.and lara parker,as the bewitching angelique collins. when this film gets a restoration it will make sense and the most awaited scence is the seance according to nancy barrett who plays claire jenkins said it was her best scene maybe it will be the scenes that will be shown at the festival this summer if so i will be there. "night" isnt a bad movie at all . it is just missing some things to read about it get the dark shadows movie book the scripts to both films are in it hopefully "night of dark shadows" will come out on dvd with the missing scenes intact we need to fight cenorship because if we dont jerks like abery from mgm could ruin a great film i personally loved this movie even though the first film "house of dark shadows" was a better film but hopefully the missing scenes will allow the fans to love "night' a little more lara paker is the perfect angelique rather in the flesh or sprit. if you havent read her book about angelique read its a great read a s well.john karlen was great as well as nancy barrett, they made a good husband and wife team. david selby looks very haunting and plays the part of evil well and i cant say enough about the debut motion picture of kate jackson, she was spellbinding in it a great actress,no wonder i can say she was the best angel of charlie's but hey what about a sequel to this movie ? im pretty sure tracy collins figured a way to get away from angelique and quentinor amybe she ran into another room and it changed to another parrell time room like in the series and got away. "night" does have the ability to be pretty creepy. if you are a d s lover rent both films you'll get a kick outta hearing the original music from the series. ... Read more

I have this DVD, which I obtained from the U.K., and recommend it to all viewers. If you can, try and get a copy of this film on either DVD, or VHS, it is well worth the time and money. This excellent BBC film, first aired in 1992. [In the USA]. The entire film is outstanding! Maurice Allington (Albert Finney) is a womanizingalcoholic, and the owner of the "Green Man Inn."When his father dies, he begins to see someone no one else can. Everyone shrugs it off as too much drink. However, there is something amiss at the Green Man Inn. Only Lucy, his young daughter believes that he is seeing something from another spiritual plane. His wife and friends believe that the alcohol is finally affecting his mind. Including his Doctor. And more importantly, a clergyman too!

Maurice Allington (Albert Finney) is the womanizing, boozing, hedonistic owner of the historic, and reputedly haunted Green Man Inn. To Maurice, life is spent juggling and avoiding the competing demands of his wife, his mistress and his children. In varying states of semi-inebriation, he flits between relationships, and the only people satisfied with his performance are the guests--to them, he is a genial, witty, entertaining host.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful
This is just awful. And I mean spine-tingingly bad. The songs are so terrible and so insistent that it makes you feel like kicking the TV in. The idea of the film is certainly interesting....certainly if it weren't played out as a musical. But it is and you can just see some of the actors baffled as to the sheer stupidity of what their doing. Some such as Tim Curry revel in the sheer nonsense this film provides. But seriously, those songs are beyond awful. My hatred for them rivals having to listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and that's intense. But Kate Bush has made some great songs so that's OK. This however, is the movie equivalent of getting an axe through your spinal cord. How it's achieved cult status is something that will have to go down on the peculiar habits of humans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
A classic! A Must See! Although not really intended for kids my daughter at 4 used to love the music and dance along...now at 14 she still loves the songs but she thinks the movie is kinda corny. Us adults however, love the movie and of course the soundtrack too. Can't help but catch yourself singing along. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes: Definitive
This is a film which is of the type that is beyond criticism. Ideal viewing for Friday the 13th October. If you wanted to be picky, you could say that it creaks a little. Nevertheless, it also flows. Straightforward in style, it is extremely effective: much more so than the later attempts with their contorted struggles to extract extra sensation. Lee and Cushing are what they are: definitive Dracula and van Helsing. Perfect casting. The atmosphere is spot on. Victorian Gothic, where the slowness of some sections merely increases the dramatic power when Dracula gets into his stride, all glowing eyes and dripping fangs. The female victims are somehow aptly overripe, just ready for a depraved roll in the bedclothes with a smouldering sex-fiend and blood-sucker. Perfect candidates for addiction. Although Harker and the Holmwoods have English names, none of this takes place in England: note that, Sean! The innkeeper sells Gordon's Gin, but otherwise he's sort of Sussex Ruritanian. And so is the undertaker/mortician; dear old Miles Malleson. Well, we mustn't be too precise about exactly where this is happening --- it's all in the mind. Once I was out shopping with my young son, when suddenly I saw Christopher Lee, stalking head and shoulders above the other shoppers. Look! I said to my boy, there's Dracula! A terrific frisson shot through the crowd. This was in Harrods, London.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Great Adaptation--blood & fangs
I'm a bit disappointed with Universal adaptations. Hammer seems to "hit home." [Horror of] Dracula is a great movie. Christopher Lee plays a pracitcally silent, blood-thirsty monster. I'd like to see other Dracula films w/ Christopher Lee. This screen adaptation is half-and-half true to Bram Stoker's novel. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Lee could replace his predecessor Bela Lugosi as Count
Christopher Lee could balance and continue his charismatic predecessor Bela Lugosi(1882 - 1956) in the 60's Hammer british Dracula series.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Guess There's Something "Wrong" With Me
I guess there must be something profoundly wrong with me, because I rather liked "Maniac".Sure, I'll concede that its definately not for everyone, but what is?As the old cliche goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure. So, what did I like about Maniac?
1-0 out of 5 stars there is something wrong with you if you enjoy this!
This is a horrible movie with no redeeming value. I realize that such a knock will actually drive people to purchase this. Let me bring something to you attention.
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Hidden Treasure
Wow! I watched it for my first time today and I have to say that this movie was really something to see. It really has the power to make you feel sorry for the "Maniac" in the film. His childhood was very similar to Norman Bates' life. Great acting by the actor who played Frank. As I said before, by the end of the film, you really have feelings for the killer. Tom Savini has come through once again with some really cool special effects. He truly is the master of horror gore. But that's the thing about this movie, there wasn't really that much gore. None was needed to tell this really surprisingly terrific story. And no nudity, they didn't take the cheap way out by having a lot of nudes. Overall, this mpvie is really worth seeing by every horror fan. Great work and deserves all the praise it gets! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A VENGEFUL GHOST STORY WITH A HORRIBLE LEGACY
This British, made for Television Ghost story, is highly recommended. If you like the type of slow and methodically paced stories from Masterpiece Theatre [where I first saw this many years ago] you will like this film. The eerie feeling one gets from the film still holds up after so many years. Great for a night viewing on one of those rainy nights. I have never read the book, so I cannot comment on its comparison. However, the film does not disappoint.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Can't look
I've never read the novel, so can't judge how well this production comes up to the standard of the author's performance. However, when I first saw it on television several years back, I felt as if I were being drawn deeper and deeper into a black abyss. It is the most frightening fictional movie I've ever seen.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Stuck With the Book
I love the book, read the online reviews, and was in a fever to buy the DVD, figuring it was a safe bet.

With dizzying cinematic tricks and astonishing performances, Francis Coppola's 1992 version of the oft-filmed Dracula story is one of the most exuberant, extravagant films of the 1990s. Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, as the Count and Mina Murray, are quite a pair of star-crossed lovers. She's betrothed to another man; he can't kick the habit of feeding off the living. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek. Tom Waits is great fun as Renfield, the hapless slave of Dracula who craves the blood of insects and cats. Sadie Frost is a sexy Lucy Westenra. And poor Keanu Reeves, as Jonathan Harker, has the m
