5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic
This has to be the most wonderful musical ever.My family has worn out so many tapes, we can't wait for it to finally come out in DVD.I would recommend this to anyone who loves music and comedy.Children absolutely are fascinated with all of the dancing and love to sing along.Everyone should experience this once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gilbert and Sullivan!!!
I first saw this version as a child when it originally came out and I really am dissappointed that I can't own it yet!!! It is one of my favorite operas and I think the version with Angela Lansbury is the best!!! You would think that with all of these known actors that this film would be on DVD. It has always been a favorite and really helped open the door to music as a child!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Favorite!
I love Gilbert & Sullivan and I love The Pirates of Penzance. I have the Broadway version (Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt) on DVD, however, this movie version will always be my favorite. I really wish they would produce a DVD. Please??????

This is a great pirate film. Based on a great novel. Though it lacks a love interest it is none the less a fine story. Superbly acted. Heston really did a great job. Superbly costumed. Excellent sets. Beutiful scenery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give Ted Turner the BLACK SPOT if he doesn't put this on DVD!
Okay....CLEARLY, there are many of us who have vehemently and emphatically stated how badly we want this movie to be RELEASED ON DVD!So, Mr. Turner....what's the deal?My wife and I saw this movie when it was first aired on TV, and INSTANTLY fell in love with it.It is, as others have mentioned, THE BEST PIRATE MOVIE EVER!As we all know, the TV and movie industries are all about $$$, and the bar silver surely awaits Turner Home Video should they release this AMAZING MASTERPIECE on DVD!We turned various family members on to this movie when it first aired, and we all agree that Charlton Heston IS LONG JOHN SILVER.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is great!
This movie is an excellent film! Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan, this film is superior to most action films in history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soft spot for this one
Amidst all the adventure, I consider this a sentimental favorite because it was one fo the first movies I can remember seeing with my future husband as a young girl. Nothing like a scary adventure movie for holding handsin a movie theatre. And it is a great movie. I think it is the best in the trilogy...but I hear another is coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ford really delivers..."
Steven Spielberg directs this action-adventure, which has something in it for everybody.Action, adventure, and even a tiny bit of romance. The plot is simple-Hitler's men have discovered Tanice (not sure how its spelled), "one of the possible resting places of the Lost Ark."Indiana Jones, also known to his peers as "Indy", is hired to recover the Ark.The only problem is that Indy has to duke it out with some very nasty Nazis in order to successfully recover the ancient artifact. The Nazis are assisted by a French archaeologist named Beloch (not sure how that's spelled either) who can be considered Indy's archrival. If Jones is to succeed, he must use all his strength and wit to thwart his adversaries, whether they be gun-toting Nazis, sword-wielding Arabs or deadly snakes.Throw in a great (and I mean GREAT) musical score by John Williams, a charismatic hero (Harrison Ford really delivers in the role of Indy) and some pretty darn good special effects, and the result is a movie for the ages! This is one movie I can watch over and over and over and...well, you get the idea. Its non-stop action really packs a punch that is all too often missed in movies today; there is always something interesting going on in this movie.I own this film in the "pan-and-scan" format, which is considered by many to be the "poor" standard of viewing movies.Fortunately, this movie is so good that watching it in ANY format is a real treat!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good Account
The film is adaptation of the C.S. Foresters first novel in the Hornblower series "The Happy Return", in the USA this was titled "Beat To Quarters" with a little added plot from a "Ship of The Line" (not three novels as other reviewers have stated). The Happy Return was originally written as a stand alone book and C.S. forester conceived the idea whilst on a voyage home after a stint writing a film scripts in Hollywood. Although a very British subject Gregory Peck portrays the part of the stiff Hornblower very well. Forester himself wrote he was very happy with the results and in many ways this version is closer to the original idea than the later TV versions. Gregory Peck plays the man alone in charge of vessels a long way from home. Forester conceived the story not so much a story of ships, heroes and battles but of class barriers and the loneliness of command. The story is about throwing together of Hornblower a Captain of middle class background and Lady Barbara, sister of Duke of Wellington, well played by Virginia Mayo, I regret however that her accent does not bear up to scrutiny very well.He is already married so is not free and in any event he is too low a social class to jump the great social divide. In he close fines of a small vessel a long way form home passions and temptations are strong. The story does depart from the original novel in one important aspect by making Lady Barbara ill on the voyage home so Captain Hornblower can care for sick lady in the already confined circumstance. Apart from that I have very little to argue with. Forester went on to write ten Hornblower novels with this film sitting in the middle of the completed sequence. If you fond of the character then this is very good starting point and to my mind gets to the heart of what the writer originally conceived. I only hope that a good DVD version is put out soon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peck is Perfect...
Peck is the perfect Hornblower, when you read the books this is who you will see after watching this wonderful film,(I have seen it on TCM).C.S. Forester, the author of the books wrote the screenplay and it shows, very true to the character and he did a wonderful job in working in the best from the first three books, which I feel are the best ones he wrote.(If you have a teenage son, do him a favor and buy him the complete set, they are much better than anything on TV and are great reads for adults also.)The current TV movies on HH should do the same and put some teeth into the writing and stick closer to the books. This film should really be put on dvd and they should add a lot of extras concerning the author, how popular the books were around the world and also include a doc. about the time period of "iron men and wooden ships"...

I bought this movie, because a family member had seen it years ago and liked it.I watched it once and it was very funny there were several sexual referances in the movie coming from Ann-Margret but you can tell that by the cover.Funny as is was, at timesyou felt like you were watching the same things over and over again.I wouldn't watch it with young children.

A raucous western spoof that proves you cant judge a cowboy by the color of his hat . High Quality Transfer . Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars You would enjoy this movie if. . .
If you like good clean humor, you will love this movie. It is so funny and also entertaining. It's about a cowboy and his horse, and the horse almost talks. It's also about a seven shot, six-shooter (can you believe it). It comes in handy at just the right time. It's also about a naive cowboy, who does dumb things and doesn't even know they're dumb. So, for an entertaining time, purchase this dvd. It's well worth the money, and the time spent watching it. I'm sure you'll love it as much as we did. Happpy watching!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed!
This movie is a gen from the golden age of moviemaking. Anthony Hope's story comes to life with strong performances by some of the greatest actors of the 30s. Madeleine Carroll is heart-breakingly beautiful as Princess Flavia and Douglas Fairbanks, jr. almost steals the show as the rascal/villain Rupert of Hentzau.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great forgotten Classic
I'm baffled as to why this hasn't been brought out on DVD yet, considering the amount of shoddy films from this and later periods that have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
I enjoyed this movie immensely. Ronald Colman did an excellent job in his dual role, and all the supporting actors were well chosen. I don't agree with other opinions that Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. stole the show. I do agree that the final duel was magnificently done! It had all the hallmarks of 30's swashbucklers, including witty dialogue and shots where the camera shows the shadows of the men fighting. This movie proves that a viewer can be entertained without the extraneous offensive elements they put in movies today. Over all, this is a great classic that I want to add to my library! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Adaptation of a Classic
This is an excellent adaptation of Fenimore Cooper's classic about the French and Indian War - superior, I think, to the much more violent Daniel Day Lewis version. The cast members give strong performances and there is a great deal of dramatic tension.I shall never forget the scene where Heather Angel leaps off a cliff to escape the murderous Magua. My only complaint is that the film is not available on a quality DVD.I hope that is soon remedied.Highly recommended for fans of the genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Economic and Entertaining
The excellent review by F.J. Harvey sums up what I intended to address regarding this film. For me, it is much more enjoyable than the 1993 Daniel Day Lewis film although that movie was by no means poorly done. I am always impressed by screenplays that successfully present a lot of information and are able to tell the story all in a relatively brief running time. Historical adventures of the 1930s, in American cinema, usually appear as novels come-to-life. The camera angles, costumes, lighting, black and white photography, etc. all come together in a way that suggests illustrations found in book editions of the late 19th and early 20th century. This 1936 version of "The Last of the Mohicans" is one of these movies, and I highly recommend it as viewing especially during the holiday season.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robust version of the classic tale
Many people -especially I suspect younger ones -will come to this movie after the lavish Michael Mann version of the book that came out in the early nineties and starred Daniel Day -Lewis .They may find this more modest 1936 black and white picture a bit quaint by contrast but for my money it is an exciting and crisply made movie in its own right.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Completely implausible plot
I fail to understand what the true story could have been that the film is supposedly based on. The plot is completely implausible. Leaving aside the basic premise of the film that Gallimard can sleep with a man without noticing this man was in fact a man and not a woman... just one example: does anybody really believe that the French police (perhaps with the exception of Luis de Funes) would transport two suspects together so that they can conveniently discuss a common strategy of hiding their former spying activiites? Preposterous if you ask me. Not to mention that there were absolutely no bumps on the road during the whole scene in the police van... (was that perhaps a hovercraft?) And there are also more improbabilities that the average European or American eyes fail to see but that left my Chinese wife totally flabbergasted... I wonder if David Cronenberg ever bothered to consult experts in the field as is the good practice with movies that involve distant regions, long-gone periods of history or special fields of human activity. Now back to the basic premise of the film, and I am not spoiling the final surprise for anyone because you figure out Butterfly is a man as soon as you have a look at the photographs on the box of the videocasette... my only explanation is that Gallimard was in fact bisexual and because of that decided to play the part of Butterfly himself in this weird relationship... be this a postscript to the dicusssion in the previous reviews as to whether John Lone was sufficiently female to be persuasive... All that having been said, the movie has its good moments and an intensive atmosphere, maybe too theatrical at times, but overall worth watching if you are a fan of things oriental or like to explore sexual ambiguities...

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
I don't think anyone could have done justice to writing the screenplay to M Butterfly (based on David Henry Hwang's stage play) than Hwang himself. While it is a bit of a departure from the 1988 play based on the true story of a French diplomat who falls in love with a Chinese opera singer and the disastrous outcome of their affair, as a film it could not have been done otherwise.5-0 out of 5 stars Who's French??
Yet another spectacular tale of love and maddness with a Freudian twist by the great David Cronenberg. There are some slight flaws with the film such as a cast portraying French people, none of which sporting French accents. But I suppose thats better than trying to do a French accent and it being inconsistant. All-in-all though, a really great, really strange (though not as strange as some of his other work) surprisingly poetic movie. Definately a must see for fans of Cronenberg and Jeremy Irons alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing tale without gunfight
I have just seen this movie and it was absolutly brilliant. The scenery, the actors the story which is pretty similar to the original Servantes book. John Lithgow is fabulous as the don, sometimes funny, sometimes very serious and sometimas extremely shy. You cannot help but listen to him and you belive him more than the family who tell that the don has only dreams. When the prince and his wife (the beautiful - just like her mother - Isabella) make fun of him, you can really hate them and want to help Quijote and Pansa. John Lithgow has played not just with his body but with his eyes too. His eyes. At the end he has pratically no lines he just look at us and it is perfect. It was a beautiful story with a talented, real actors. Don't miss is if you like films that touch you heart and soul. I give 5+1 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but...
Although I found this film to be light and enjoyable, I would have to disagree with anyone who claims that it is "quite true to the book."True, it follows an outline of the most basic plot, but do not buy into the idea that seeing this movie is anything like reading Cervantes' original work.A lot is left out, both in the extensive storyline and in the complexity of the characters. It is also set in a time period approximately two hundred years after the original book was written.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest movies that really stick to the book!
I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS GREAT! This movie is one of the few movies that actually stick to the book, with only a few minor changes! The movie is about Alonso Quixada, an old gentleman who loves reading about chivalry. The books of chivalry change his mind, so he escapes from his home to become a knight-errant, despite his niece and housekeeper's pleas to keep him at home. Alonso, who has renamed hisself Don Quixote de la Mancha, takes Sancho Panza, his neighbor, as a squire. Together, Don Quixote on his horse and Sancho Panza jauntily riding on his donkey, encounter many adventures. For example, once, Don Quixote mistakes windmills to be giants. When he rushes towards the "giant" and is about to strike "the giant," despite Sancho's saying that it is just a windmill, his breath is knocked out of him. When he sees that the giant is really a windmill, he blames and curses the "great magician 'Malfatto'" who is really made up in his mind. While this is happening, Quixote's friends, the curate and the barber, his niece, and his housekeeper seek for ways to make Quixote realize his foolishness. The curate enlists the help of his nephew, Sampson Currasco, to help him cure Don Quixote of his foolishness. Sampson sets out to find Don Quixote and bring him back to his senses. The first time, he pretends to be a knight and tries to win a joust with him. However, Sampson loses. After Don Quixote wins, he sets out for the palace of the Duke and Duchess. There, he is entertained by them. However, he is merely a joke to them. The Duke and Duchess play many jokes on them. One day, the "knight of the mirrors," Sampson Currasco, demands to have a joust with Don Quixote. The terms are that if Quixote loses, he will have to return to his hometown and have no more adventures. However, if Quixote wins, the "knight of the mirrors's" fate is in his hands. This time, Sampson wins, and Don Quixote returns to his hometown. There, he lives until he dies peacefully.

This 1982, 180-minute television remake of the original MGM feature, produced 30 years before, is the rare makeover of a classic that works quite well under its own steam. Anthony Andrews plays the disinherited knight who returns from the Third Crusades and is determined to raise the ransom to free a kidnapped King Richard (Julian Glover). With his bid rebuffed by his estranged father (Michael Hordern), and the affection of the latter's ward, Rowena (Lysette Anthony), compromised, Ivanhoe looks toward the generosity of the beautiful Rebecca (Olivia Hussey)--whose father (James Mason) he rescued from anti-Semitic Normans--for help. But a plot by faithless friends to discredit Ivanhoe, and his subsequent partnership with Robin Hood (David Robb) to save the day, keep this story from slowing down even for a minute. Originally a miniseries, this production has enough breadth to provide lots of breathing room for the script and cast to mine all the drama they can from Sir Walter Scott's novel. This is also a great-looking movie, with wall-to-wall pageantry, superb costumes--the works. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but it doesn't do justice to the book
I must admit that I loved the book.I was hoping that this would be an accurate movie or at least keeping with the spirit.I found that it was a bit flat and that it didn't have the flair and excitment that the book had.Well done for a tv series, but not likely to satisfy the die hard fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars "If I could only get my strength back!"
"Ivanhoe" is a curiosity of literature; a long adventure novel whose hero spends most of the plot unconscious, a medieval romance with a not-so-subtle rail against prejudice, and a tale that proves when all else fails, have Robin Hood show up. This made-for-TV adaptation follows the book fairly closely, and it stars the always welcome, decidedly delicious Anthony Andrews to boot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love Affairs and Pageantry
From what I remember of the 1952 version, it was all about Robert Taylor and whether or not he would wind up with Elizabeth Taylor or Joan Fontaine.Today it seems like a different world, of course, and even in 1952 Taylor was a bit long in the tooth to play Wilfred of Ivanhoe properly, while Liz Taylor was a good 20 years younger than him and way younger than Joan Fontaine (who plays her successful rival, a lesson that even the mature women can still get a man--a lesson we heard very seldom in the 1950s).

3-0 out of 5 stars thrilling, fun for kids, a hoot for adults
Keeping largely but not completely to the Robin Hood tales of yore, this Errol Flynn swashbuckler is a lot of fun but will strain credulity in ways that make for interesting father-son discussions.

Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a good watch if you dont take it as anything more than a glorified ramar of the jungle
as long as nobody tries to overlay this adventure tale with philosophical metaphors and such, im cool with this movie.sadly, it lends itself to that sorta tretment.i dont usually like val kilmer but he manages not to emote here, and though i think michael douglas is miscast as the great white hunter, he manages to turn in a professional job.suspenseful & exciting.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching Again To See What You Missed
This movie struck me on a couple of levels.Literally the story gives a beautiful but wild African setting. We see a skilled and highly favored engineer off to build a bridge but confronted by nature that he cannot control. There is another side to the movie though, because it is a reminder that every now and then the predictable become unpredictable and that includes animals as well as humans. Here, magnificent lions that we are led to believe only strike when hungry or threatened stop following the rules. So, what happens when the rules no longer apply? That's why the movie bears watching again.I already had this in VHS, but it is a movie that I periodically go back to, just to observe the behaviors of those afraid to the point of no return, afraid but willing to complete what was started and too afraid not to confront the source of their fear and the carelessness and complacency we can sometimes achieve, when we're too good at what we do.Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas served their characters well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ghost and The Darkness
Excellent portrayal of a true story.Douglas and Kilmer are perfect for their roles as big game hunter (Douglas) and construction engineer. The story in itself is magnificient.Great excitement and terrific scenery! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bikers Get A Break
I thought Running Cool was a great movie.Bikers are always being displayed as outlaws. This movie comes together to show how bikers stick together as a family. The language is a little foul, but if you can lookpast that you will find that not all bikers are bad. They are everydaypeople just like you and me. You also have an added humor along with aromantic love story in here as well.It goes back to the old saying"You can't judge a book by it's cover". ... Read more

I saw this flick the very first night it came out in theatres and have been a die hard fan of it ever since.I love Dolph Lundgren in this, and it is even better than Punisher(which is another one of his underrated movies of the late 80's.Where is the dvd and when it does come , do not make it bare-bones with no trailer, commentary, deleted scences and all that good stuff. ... Kevin Bacon stars in this quickie sports film that's really more a culture-clash comedy. He plays an assistant coach at the college-basketball level who's looking for that big, big recruiting score and finds it in a distant African village. But his quarry, a seven-footer (Charles Gitona Maina) he spots in an anthropology film, turns out to be the prince of his tribe who's in line for the crown and has no interest in becoming fodder for Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars no title
Except for the presence of Kevin Bacon, whom I like a lot, this would have been a real loser. There were so many things wrong.Directed by Paul Glaser with no surprises, no depth of character, a too heavy-handed Hollywood scenario. You knew what was coming a mile away. There was good cinematography and music, and Kevin Bacon is always appealing, but that's the best I can say.Oh, and the nun.She was pretty good too.The lead black man was also engaging; the problem was really the script.Too pat, and too many unbelievable things that screamed "Hollywood".Like when the village burned down. They were ready to just up and leave where they'd lived for generations. As if it takes generations to rebuild their houses. And there were no signs of the burned buildings during the basketball game. And Bacon was supposed to climb this incredible mountain, get cut in the groin, then play basketball, all on a rotten knee.Please.

Grab your garden hose and a top hat because The air up there is finally on DVD! This has got to be one of the best movies I have watched in a long time!At some point in time, you have to get tired of all the synthetic and predictable stuff that hollywood spews and this movie is the break that hollywood needs !The setting is spectacular, done in Kenya and I personally fell in love with Kenyan cheerleading; the maasai dances, the passion and energy of the people are all so refreshingly different !I would recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a fantastic movie ! ... I was never into gymnastics but when I caught this movie on cable, I fell in love with the movie. One of the songs just kept on playing in my head. It was a typical 80's song...a power ballard. It was called Two Hearts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gymmania
If you live for gymnastics, this is for you.Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones put on an awesome performance. The twist and turns of this story is as elegant as the gymnasts themselves.I find myself wanting to get back on the mat over and over again after being deeply absorbed in this exciting film.
