5-0 out of 5 stars Who is Iron Man?
My son recently received a T-shirt with Iron Man on it.He had no idea who Iron Man was. When I told him that Iron Man was one of my favorite superheroes as a child, my son could not believe it!It has proven hard for me to find Iron Man videos. This video explains how Iron Man came to be and had a cool adventure in the story line too.Not just my eldest son, whom I bought this for, but all my sons really like this video. It is about 45 minutes. We received it last night and we have watched it twice. We enjoyed it so much that I am now online trying to find more episodes! ... Editorial Review

Animator-director-screenwriter Ralph Bakshi audaciously tries to chronicle the history of 20th-century American popular music, while also placing each period into historical and social context--all in 97 minutes! Its animated, episodic narrative follows four generations of Jewish-American musicians as each painfully seeks fame through changing musical eras. Starting at the turn of the century with a piano-playing immigrant in New York, the film moves swiftly, following his offspring through such movements as Gershwin-era pop, jazz, folk music, '60s psychedelia, and punk--and only pauses for elaborate, energized musical numbers designed to showcase the work of Benny Goodman, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Lou Reed, the Jefferson Airplane, and numerous others. However, these electric set pieces provide brief dynamism in a relatively bleak film filled with hard-luck protagonists suffering through clichéd drug addiction, death, and alienation. While the film's scope is admirably ambitious, and Bakshi's stylized use of rotoscoping (tracing animation from live action) makes for fluid and often eye-popping visuals, his treatment also feels heavy handed and cuts numerous corners. And, when Baskshi ends his epic by mocking punk, and celebrating the future of rock & roll through the music of Bob Seger, one wonders whether or not he a knowledgeable grasp of his topic at all. The DVD version presents the film in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars American Pop
This is a great accomplishment in animation and used to be a rare film to find in print.I'm glad to add it to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best and most underrated rock n roll dvds!
I have seen so many rock magazines out there with its best rock movies list or reviews and for reasons I will never know,American Pop is rarely mentioned. Hello!!! Wake up critics! This is one of the best out there! It is the masterpiece from the artist who brought you The Lord of the rings and Fritz the cat. This is the story of 4 generations of young men trying to make it in the music industry. Taking place in New York during the early 1900's and ending in the late 1970's,each of the first 3 generations don't succeed for one reason or another with the last generation getting his big break giving this classic its happy ending. From the days of Vaudeville to the big band era to the summer of love to the punk era, this movie has it all. But to me,it is not just a rock n roll movie,it is a history book on dvd as well with such historic moments as the mobsters era, both world wars, the beatnik movement, and the drug problems of America, just to name a few. With music from legendary big band, jazz, and rock n roll legends, this dvd is for all age levels, though there might be a scene or two not recommended for the very young music lovers. This dvd may not be around long enough due to slow sales and lack of advertising so I recommend you buy this legendary and underrated animated rock dvd a.s.a.p.! Rock on!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bakshi's best film
This is one of my all time favorite movies.I saw this film back in the 70's right before Star Wars came out and I remember how I loved the characters the most, the hip old wizard, the babe, and the totally cool assassin, a villain turned hero (I never liked elves or fairies, or hobbits either).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bakshi gem
Ralph Bakshi was one of the most innovative minds who saw the potential of animation for adults. His work is always an eclectic blend of fantasy and reality, the bawdy with the profound. In this world of escalating violence and terrorism, Wizards can have many new meanings with a very old message about Peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars I guess most people just don't get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Svankmajer is amazing.
Jan Svankmajer is a very clever animator and director. It seems that most of the negative reviews come from small minded people who are not impressed because his style is very "non-hollywood".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Stunning Visual Treatfor the Curioser and the Curioser
Most live action takes on the timeless, beautifully surreal classic Alice in Wonderland are replete with the unfortunate burden of having live actors zipped up in hokey animal suits. Said actors then act accordingly to fit their silly, hokey suits, in a result that only the most bored of pre-teens will ever find the movie any bit entertaining.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
From the moment the stuffed dead rabbit ripped the nails out of his paws and spit them out I was hooked. This is a hilarious movie. Even more so if it was made for kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forsooth! 'Tis the stuff of Norse Gods
Present-day mythology at its best headlined gy the God of Thunder! The 1st story gor underway in "...Hercules", as Thor got smack-dab in the middle of a love triangle here. Thor loves Nurse Jane Foster, but his father Odin wasn't having it. With help from Zeus, he sent Herc down to Earth to court Jane away from Thor, who got struck by jealousy as Jane planned (why?). Thus, the most powerful fight between the scions of Asgard and Olympus began...for the heart of a mortal woman? Anyway, I was rooting for Ol' Goldilocks to win until Odin took some "advice" from Seidring and made his own son lose by removing half his powers. And wouldn't you know it, Jane came running back to after Thor after all that. Is love strange or what?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A movie for people with taste and style
Cool World is a great movie full of some really great creativity and innovation, and really deserves some credit especially for it's time. In terms of story, acting, and writing, it does okay, however the real shining points of this film are in the animation and more than anything the ideas and production.
1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this film no stars
This is simply the worst animated film I have ever seen in my entire life, there is nothing to warrant even one star. This film is nothing but a mess of wooden characters, bad animation, and a poorly conceived plot. This film could have been good in the right hands, namely Ralph Bakshi's hands. The studio executives changed the entire film without Bakshi's knowledge and the final result was this animated abortion. The film started good at the begining, Frank Harris being sucked into the "Cool World" and eventually a detective there and that's were the qaulity ends. The film goes back and forth between the cartoonist Jack Deebs in the real world, who is given no detail, and the poorly animated and un-funny "Cool World". Then all of sudden at the finale, Jack Deebs is given a massive dose of character development at the very last minute and actaully ends up being the hero. Yes,this is film is actually that sloppy.I think I need to alert the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, they have obviously overlooked "Cool World" as a great form of torture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Spidey
From 1967 an animator named Ralph Baski did the first few entries in this series. More than any other cartoon at the time; with the exception of Hanna Barbera's Fantastic Four cartoon, these cartoons followed the comics more than not.I love the scenes where Spidey swings through New York City.It is primative by today's standards but brings back lots of memories for me because I loved those cartoons. I can only wish that Marvel makes a complete DVD set of this classic.Only thing is I don't believe so because no one is interested. This one was ahead of its time because it tapped into the superhero in all of us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spidey Rules!
Not really being a big fan of cartoons, Spiderman is a rare exception.Even though the animation isn't "Walt Disney" quality, it is still very enjoyable to watch. The only criticism, which has been mentioned before in other reviews, is that the tape is too short. It would have been nice to have 8 episodes on a 2 hr tape instead of just 2 episodes making it only have a runtime of 35 minutes.20th Century did a nice job on the clamshell case and the artwork. Also, offering it in SP mode, and not in EP, like most of the tapes of TV shows seem to be recorded in, was nice too.Even though the tape isn't that long, it's still worth the money to have as a keepsake for fans of Spiderman.

4-0 out of 5 stars The TRUE Spider-man
It has become increasingly rare when a movie or television version of a character of literary descent (particularly of comic book origins) remains even remotely faithful to its source material. This video is a rare exception to that trend. If you are a lover of the Stan Lee/ Steve Ditko comics that established the entire Spider-Man world this is a real treat of a video.Despite some limited animation (it was the sixties remember), this video compilation shows what Spider-man is all about. Watching the origin episode made me wonder why the whole "with great powers comes great responsibility" angle was removed from all the subsequent screenings of this tragic hero.I would like to see some follow-ups to this release. The theme song alone brands it as a classic. My only reservation on this video is its short length, only two episodes. otherwise five stars ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More accurate version of LOTR
This is definently more accurate in terms of the actual book, than Peter Jackson's films. While this may not have the greatest animation and voice acting. It is still good and it was definently a worthy effort. If you are a new fan however this movie may be a little confusing. I suggest you read the books before watching ANY of the movies it will give you a more accurate view of the tale
5-0 out of 5 stars Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings is a Cinematic God send
For all those reviews that say Ralph Bakshi's movie was horrible, keep in mind that they said Peter Jackson's movie is accurate to the books. This is not so, but that is not what i am writing about. Ralph Bakshi made a movie that was so on par with the books that you could read the book as you watch the movie. The rotoscoping was a thing of pure genious, as it mixes up animation styles. Also, many of you said that Rankin Bass' "The Hobbit" was good, what is wrong with you. Why are the orcs no taller than the hobbits, at least Bakshi's has them the correct color and size. Yeah, orcs are black, not green or brown like peter jackson's. The reason that Bakshi could not finish the Lord of the Rings is because he lost the rights to it, so stop all your wining. Remember this, if Bakshi had been allowed to finish The Lord of the Rings, we would not have the monstrosity of Rankin-Bass' Return of the King, come on Frodo of the Nine fingers and the ring of DOOOOOOOM! There is no singing in the return of the king, but there is more than peter jackson's movie which ends at the coronation with the fellowship parted. There was an entire book left out, so complain about his before you complain about a movie made in 1978!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only for fans
For English speakers: if you are not a fan of The Lord of the rings this movie won't fill your expectations. You sure have to know the story. But if your are this movie is a dream comes true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of perversion, the fetish movie to end all fetishes
In his most original (at least from what I've seen), very different from his other films, most disturbing yet most hilarious film, the great magician Jan Svankmajer, animator-surrealist from Prague, makes his modern-day city the setting for the story of six ordinary people with extraordinary fantasies. The film that acknowledges as inspirations Sigmund Freud, Max Ernst, Luis Bunuel (the admitted fetishist himself) and the Marquis De Sade (all of them I am sure would love it) portrays the strange world of hidden fetishes that can be found in the most unexpected places. Three men and three women encounter one another through the day and exchange the knowing glances even though some of them don't even know each other but there is a certain connection and they feel it. They all are "conspirators of pleasure" who spend the most part of the film meticulously, painstakingly and creatively inventing methods, tools and constructions for fulfilling their bizarre fantasies. We will observe chicken suit with the wings made of umbrellas. There is a woman-post worker with a fetish for bread. She rolls up balls of bread and sucks them up her nose through a straw (honestly, not my idea of fun but hey, you should see the look at her face). There are unusual brushes made up of rolling pins, pan lids, and stolen pieces of fur that one man, the detective rubs over his body while his wife, the TV news-person feels neglected and buys some live carp that she strokes and feeds them the bread balls which were delivered by the post worker. The TV lady has no idea that she's been an object of a newsagent- guy's desire. He constructed the machine that consisted of several mechanic arms which can hug, stroke, rub, pull...gently while he watches her on TV and reaches his climax at the same time as she does helped by her carps but I am going to stop right here and only add that "some of our most exciting sexual experiences take place entirely within the minds of other people." (Roger Ebert - not about "Conspirators of Pleasure" but I thought it'd fit perfectly here) 4-0 out of 5 stars A Mailcarrier's Childish Phantasy?
Excellent! What a storyteller! I had only seen Jan's short "Food" before this, and so had a predisposition to see this film in a mirthful light. I agree with the Surrealist classification, in that it reminds me of Bunuel's "L'Age Dor"; long introductory scenes that achieve the necessary mundane boredom to launch the ensuing bizareness. A man kissing a tv and spitting out water; Yeah!

5-0 out of 5 stars Three excellent examples of late-period Svankmajer.
Jan Svankmajer is most famous for his idiosyncratic burrowing of classic Gothic and fairy tales and children's stories, but this collection atttests to the diversity of the animator's oeuvre.'Darkness/Light/Darkness' is typical of more sculptured works like 'Dimensions Of Dialogue', in which human forms are dismantled, scattered, merged and weirdly reconstructed; the physical and tactile becomes abstract in the process, and vice versa.5-0 out of 5 stars Scenes From The Surreal By Jan Svankmajer
For anyone out there interested in stop-motion claymation and in film art in general, this is the movie for you, it is filled with an essence of visceral dark humor, with political undertones. This movie among others of Jan Svankmajer is pure Genius!!!!!

This is some old classic Marvel cartoons with the primative animation. I only wish they would release a complete set with all the episodes. I am sure they are in an archive somewhere. Why is it that Marvel fans are not asking for more of these classic masterpieces of animation.I loved some of the old comics converted into limited animation in this one. The voices are just right. Subby himself was voiced by a prominent actor who I don't remember here. All in all it's a treat for those who forgot these things existed so long ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Classic from Marvel.
Classic artwork and subtle animation help to make this another must have in the Marvel comic lover's collection.Features two episodes from the 1960s series of the title character.Somewhat cheesy, but a lot of fun. 4-0 out of 5 stars First "Lum" movie is a real treat for fans of the TV series
URUSEI YATSURA: ONLY YOU (1983) was the first theatrical movie spun off from the popular animated sci-fi teen comedy TV series, "Urusei Yatsura," based on Rumiko Takahashi's long-running manga about the misadventures of horny high-schooler Ataru and his stormy relationship with his shapely, horned, tiger-skin-bikini'd alien "wife," Lum. It offers a full-blown science fiction setting, complete with the transport of Ataru and all his high school chums to an exotic city on another planet, as the backdrop for an imaginative, funny and, ultimately quite touching romantic farce that sustains its manic pace of comic suspense to the very end. To make a long, eventful story short, Ataru finds himself engaged, inadvertently, to yet another gorgeous alien, the privileged and pampered Lady Elle, and is taken to her planet with Lum and all her friends in hot pursuit. Ataru shows no unwillingness to go, seeing as how this is a golden opportunity to meet a new hot babe-and get away from the clinging Lum. However, after a short-lived idyll with Elle in her palace, Ataru suddenly sees her true colors and is soon praying for Lum & co. to come and prevent the wedding.5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Yes this movie is 19 years old. No one dies. There are no huge anime breasts. There are no giant mecha with extension cords. What dies it have then? Laugh after Laugh after Laugh. Urusei Yatsura is one of the greatest anime series in the history of Japanese animation, and although Only You does not hold up to the next movie Beautiful Dreamer, it is a gem of a film.5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rumiko charm and entertainment!
I'm sure most people know Oshii Mamoru from his sci-fi anime of a lateeighties and nineties such as Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell. However, most fans of his later work don't seem to pay much attention to his earlierwork on the Urusei Yatsura TV series and the first two of its sixsubsequent movies. I suppose the Gibson-esque world of Ghost in the Shellis considered much more interesting by most than the Flash Gordon hamminessof Lum, but if one looks closely they will find just as thoughtfullycrafted work and, in the case of the first movie, an excellent example ofhow a ridiculous idea can be skillfully molded into engaging, light-heartedentertainment.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars quite simply crap
This was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time.It felt like an 80's flick with some BAD animation. For one thing the intro is tremedously long. This movie sucked and you should not waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Breaking of Predictability
Jan Svankmajer's Faust is undoubtedly an aggressively disturbing movie. This in no way detracts from the film, however; indeed, it constitutes perhaps the central thematic point of this cinematographic rendering of the original Faust tale. The disturbing facets of this film seem to represent a modernization of the original's ability to shock and discommode its audience - the tropes of the 16th century, no longer applicable to the modern audience, are here replaced wholesale with more appropriate, more modern shocks and unbalancing depictions. This effect is primarily achieved through the problematization of our relationship to the every-day world and its objects.
5-0 out of 5 stars pure poetry
This is such a wonderfully imaginative blending of various Faust stories, a kind of commentary on Faust as cultural icon. Amazing that such a thing could appear in the late Twentieth Century when few could reference all the references, when even the Faust phenomenon is fading. The use of puppets and stop-motion--the imagery overall-- is exceptional. This is Svankmajer's "Late Quartets" or "Missa Solemnis"--a grand uncompromising statement by a great artist. Recommended to those who have the patience, maturity, and good fortune to be able to appreciate such complex and demanding works of art. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Bakshi's best!
i love this show. ill be so glad when it comes to dvd.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Bakshi's best!
Having first seen "Hey Good Lookin'" at the movies in 1982, the year I was seventeen, I have always considered this a film that connects me directly to my past. I was involved with my first "real" girlfriend at the time, and this is one of the first films that we saw together. That aside, having seen this movie countless times since then I have been struck by it's completeness, and excellence as a film. Bakshi's only film to featured a completely original, and brilliant, yet unreleased, musical soundtrack by Ric Sandler, "Hey Good Lookin'" gives a good look into what it meant to be a guy growing up in 1950's Brooklyn and the role you needed to play in order to get respect, get along with your friends, and what was necessary to get the girl. From the leather motorcycle jackets, the slicked back DA's and the rumbles, Ralph Bakshi gives us a window into which we might look into a past where male / female roles were clearly defined, and a man could still be a man. Oh yeah... and the animation is PHENOMENAL as well. This is one of Bakshi's best!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hey Don't Buy It!
Now, I liked this movie. I watched it religiously while I was in college and really it's not that good in the vein of Bakshi films though it's better than Street Fight which actually made me nauseated but besides the novelty of cussing, perverted toons it's not that spectacular of a film.Me and my college buddies would go around campus quoting the characters from movie like Vinny, Crazy Shapiro and that lady that moons this black dude from the passenger seat window of her boyfriends car.Get this movie if you're into collecting wierd cinema.Otherwise stay far away from it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars sorry for non-japanese speaker fans.
When I watched this movie in 1984.I stayed in the cinema for more than ten hours straight to watch the same movie three or four times that day.(In Japan, once you paid admission you could stay in the cinema until you were physically out of the cinema.)21.5 years and a few movies later, I have never seen any movie that gives me more goosedumps that this movie. And many animation fans over 30 years old and a few greatest animation creators in Japan agree with me, including original Gundams' creator.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
It's hard to describe the effect that first seeing this movie had on me the first time I saw it five years ago, but it's something that's sucks with me at the very least.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still Riding the Turtle's Back.......................
I'm not a huge anime fan, but there was some great imagery here. Scenes linger in your mind, touching on some great memory you know you had but can't remember. You will begin to care abou the characters, and yearn to be part of their "perfect world."Dealing with how to cope with a natural (or unnatural, in this case) calamity is what makes this a survivalist's story: the ability to live and have fun doing it.Whoever made this needs to be acredited with making a modern masterpiece, because the experiance of watching Beautiful Dreamer is inspiring and intense. If you close your eyes you can almost see the broken ruin of Tomobiki high. I could see myself under the big sun above Tomobiki, listening to funky 80's japanese pop while taking in a beefbowl with a smile on my face, waving to Lum and Ataru as they tear up the lake in their Kawasakis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Open a Book and Open a Mind
With enchanting rhyme and whimsical illustrations, Dr. Suess delivers a children's book with lots to consider. The butter side up Yooks and the butter side down Zooks are a parody of the cold war, and the crescendo builds as the trivial evolves into a weapons race, culminating with a stalemate with each side having a "Big Boy Boomeroo".The younger readers will be enchanted by the rhythm of the tale and the lesson that grandpa imparts will be better understood by the older readers.Actually, a wonderful book for all ages.Pair this book with THE LORAX (a once "banned" Suess book!) and you'll have my favorite baby shower gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is wonderful for teaching about getting along with others who are different from you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Butter Battle
The loved author, Dr.Suess tries to illustrate a war between two sides who never quit. The conflict, the side you put your BUTTER ON YOUR BREAD! That is what makes the story wacky and so Dr.Suess. Trying to out do each other, they always are at neck and neck. With big inventions, the two sides come at a standstill, daring each other to make their move. The book relates to how an actual war starts and how it keeps growing as it gets fed violence and non-sensed kinds of unsolved problems. This book was great with all the wacky coined language. I am a Dr.suess fan who enjoys the kind of books he creates. The books show what," The Dr.Suess" is trying to state and explain. Maybe, the world of Dr.Suess, is maybe, our world too. ... Read more
